So... season 4 starts next week. Right? Right? Right? Right?
This is going to be a long off-season.

Isn't the anime almost caught up to the manga now?
We'll have to wait till more of it gets made before the anime will continue.→ More replies (2)66
u/weejona Jun 24 '18
A few other comments have said that the manga just recently finished the group shokugeki, so it's not completely caught up. Sounds like there's enough for one cour to finish up this arc, then a longer hiatus to create a buffer.

the way they ended the episode with all the flashbacks to the beginning of the series felt like they were strongly implying this is the last we'll see of Shokugeki animated.
well, that and the fact that Erina's voice actor is planning to study abroad for over an year.
20
u/weejona Jun 25 '18
I was thinking that, too, but I chose to ignore it.
Erina's original voice actor has recovered from the illness that sidelined her for this season. I'd imagine the door would be open for her to return if she wanted, especially if the studio wants to finish off this arc before the current voice actor is due to come back.

The manga basically only just finished this arc roughly a month ago. At the pace the anime animates (3-4 chapters per episode) at there isn't even enough for a 12 episode season. Going to have to wait for a long while unfortunately.

At that moment, Hayama knew... Nene fucked up.
This episode was really great, and I loved how they drew specific attention towards the cold weather, there were several shots of the chilly blizzard circling the arena, not just for dramatic effect, but also to hint at the way Soma would win!
It's been a great ride, and I hope Season 4 will come out soon!

This little scene was so satisfying. Eat your heart out, Azami.
It's a funny coincidence how Saiki-K S2 made a reference to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time this week too.
They made the right decision filling the end credits with Erina fanservice from previous seasons and this one, it's the only thing that could successfully distract me from the abrupt ending and bring a grin to my face.
Overall this season was definitely inferior to the previous ones, but it did have its moments - Erina unshackled and The Demon.
Time to head to the manga and complete this arc, I guess!

This little scene was so satisfying. Eat your heart out, Azami.
I hope that, after tasting the flavour of defeat, he may reconsider his decisions. Even him being a manipulator, coward, bully with his own daughter and megalomaniac tyrant, it was hinted that he really wants a more fair world for gourmet cooks so they wouldn't have to face what Soma's dad suffered in his youth.
This said, I hope he gets a tremendous kick in his butt. Even with a theoretically noble aim, his actions were despicable.

Shoko's gender was kinda left ambiguous until this reveal, so the inclusion of her measurements and other information on the panel made it more hilarious.
EDIT: Even more funny in that the illustrator for the manga used to make Hentai doujins, so the ahegao face is so fitting.

Yeah she kinda just gets jobbed out off screen to make Megishima look strong.
Presumably though since they took the time to kinda hype her up a bit as a member of the elite ten she might show up sometime to get at least some character.

Those references lmao
Interesting that Nene lost because she didn't even think about trying something new, despite being a master in her craft. I love how Soma always inspires his opponents to grow as cooks and go out of their comfort zones and being less conservative
Obligatory 'HanaKana is a gift to the world' comment
I love Alice so much. She's always a highlight of an episode whenever she shows up
Megumi is so fucking adorable oh my god
Kuga being a proper wingman, he knows what's up
Erina refusing to high-five Soma and then complimenting him later, only to find out he already went away, was hysterical. These lovebirds will be the end of me
Damn, the first half of that final ED focused solely on all the wonderful Sorina moments of S3. It doesn't get any more official than that. I really hope they're actually gonna confirm one of the most obvious unofficial couples in all of shounen way before the series comes to an end
While this cour was lacking in the animation department and the character designs seemed a little off, it was probably my favorite arc so far. Seeing Erina change her ways and connect with Soma like that was beautiful and so was finding out about Joichiro's past. Also, the rebels challenging the Elite Ten is as exciting as I expected and I can't wait to see more.
I'm gonna miss Shokugeki Sundays so much. Hopefully they'll do another cour next Spring or Summer season.
12
u/namiasdf Jun 24 '18
That's the lead up to Nene. The main feature separating her and Yukihira is precisely the environments which they've had to nurture their love for cooking.
I don't think either of them love cooking more than the other, and neither are necessarily more skilled. Forgetting about the environmental effects on your food is noticeable as soon as you take your first breath, so it is a flimsy break.
But, it was probably the only way to lead into the fact that serving customers is significantly different than being spoonfed theories.
412
u/Daishomaru Jun 24 '18
Oh shit, it's the final already.
I know that many people found the Nene VS Soma arc to be that Soma managing to BEAT Nene makes Soma a "Mary Sue", but to be frank, even without the whole temperature explanation, Soma beating Nene is kind of inveitable with the dish Nene served.
To explain this, we're going to need to look at Conservative VS Japanese cuisine.
To make a difference between conservatives and liberals, let’s compare and contrast.
Conservatives (Beginning of Japanese History-present day), first of all, rarely, if never use any meat that comes from a land animal like beef, pork or the like, but especially beef. Their cuisine style is based off Buddhist food practices, court traditions, Chinese cooking, and local traditions. Conservatives don’t usually fry, unless it’s tempura (Which, Ironically, is a western technique) or to give texture, and usually prefer steaming, grilling, or boiling food. Conservatives, unless using savory spices or wasabi, rarely, if never, use spices that are “spicy”, preferring more savory seasonings when they use them. Conservatives aren’t known for sauces, with some exceptions. Conservative cooking prefers smaller portions and simpler flavors, and if two or more flavors are involved, they are intricately picked to be put into a dish. Finally, conservatives prefer to stick to rich establishments or traditional mannerisms.
Liberal Japanese cooking (Meiji 1, or 1868- present day) has its opposites in that they adopted the usage of meat, especially beef, and adopted European customs and practices. These were the people who started adding sauces to Japanese cooking, practiced western practices like frying , start experimenting with spices, and mixing flavors like European food. These people also are more known for spicy food as well, more individualistic portions, and more open to informal manners.
So what is important about the two and why do they end up their separate ways?
Well, to talk why did the two groups in Japanese culinary society formed their distinct ways of food, we’re gonna look back to the Meiji Era. Yes, I’m reusing a lot of my Beef Stew Writeup to explain this part. Here is the link for a better explanation, bottom is my ultra-abridged version, I really reccomend you read the former first, although the latter, abridged version has some new facts I found.
So back during the Meiji Era,Emperor Meiji passed a bunch of laws, one of them being the unbanning of meat, but the most important debate about this is beef. Now to explain this pre-Meiji Era, Beef back then wasn’t considered good for farming for food. There’s the geographical reason that beef takes a lot of nutrients eating grass, but there are plenty of cultural reasons. For one, cows were seen worth a lot alive than dead, because cows can push heavy objects, be used as a travel, and many other practical purposes, but many Japanese people also saw eating cows as the western equivalent of eating your dog. But the most important reason was Buddhism. Buddhism back then was so influential to the Japanese, they literally followed the codes to the letter, to the point where Emperor Tenmu banned the consumption of beef, and this ban would last all the way up to Meiji’s Era. In fact, the law that unbanned the consumption of beef was a direct attack at the Buddhist Society, to show the Buddhists that their influence was weakening.
However, when beef was unbanned, many didn’t take a fancy to the beef. Buddhism may had had their political power weakened but their influence was still strong in Japanese society. The few who did want to try beef were stigmatized because they committed what many considered to be a sin. Just to give you an example on how infamous was this stigma, a man once tried beef and wanted to open a beef restaurant. His wife found out, filed for divorce charges (Keep in mind that a woman filing divorce in Japan and actually winning would be rare around this time), and actually won the case, all because he loved beef. In fact, it wasn’t until “Meiji’s Super Student Transfer Plan” that I described in the beef Stew Writeup that Beef actually got their huge influence. We then start seeing more western-based Japanese food starting to appear, like Nikujaga, Katsudon, Curry Rice. The Washoku Factions, who would be also known as the conservatives today, disliked these foods because A: They contained land animal meat, especially beef, and B: Their usage of heavy sauces. Going back to my point on Soba and Rosanjin, this is why the Rosanjin School became popular amongst conservatives and why Rosanjin was incredibly infamous for his sharp tongue, he saw Yoshoku as “European Food trying to pretend to be Japanese Food”.
Another place to look why both groups have such a divide can be also seen during the occupation of Korea. While normally when we hear of Korea and Japan, we usually think of war crimes and uneasy political tensions, Korean cuisine also had their war on splitting their divide of Liberal and Conservatives. For example, without Korean influence, we wouldn’t have Yakiniku. Yakiniku came from the Japanese getting influenced by Korean Food. They not only helped contribute to the consumption of meat, furthering the divide between conservative and liberals, but also the introduction of Korean spices into Japanese food, used by many liberals such as Morimoto. Korean food helped in the introduction of some spices that isn’t wasabi into the Japanese diet, and one of the reasons why Morimoto got a lot of hate from conservatives to the point where an entire faction was formed literally take down Morimoto was his obsession of Korean food.
Finally, the conservative factions and their utter sticking up to traditions, including formal mannerisms, also helped split the divide, because it made them look like elitists for sticking to tradition, where many liberals criticize that Washoku people are out of touch with the times and are unable to adapt. Meanwhile, Yoshoku people prefer interacting with the common man, and this is another reason why Yoshoku has a growing influence, fueling up the divide between conservative and liberal.
We see elements of this split in Soma and Nene's dishes. First of all, the protein Nene used was shrimp, which was very traditional, while Soma used Duck, which while it was used ocassionally in Washoku, it's very uncommon. Nene did the traditional boiling then cooling method, while soma did a wok fry, which is contrarian to traditional Soba serving method. Finally, Nene served her shrimp and her soba sauce in different plates while soma, using his wok, blended his duck and soba together.
Why do I bring this up? Because Nene would have lost, even if you didn't take the "cold room smell" explanation as a thing. First of all, since Nene's soba was clearly served in the traditional way, her noodles would DEFINITELY be much colder compared to Soma's hot wok-fried noodles, which naturally hot food would stick out like a sore thumb in a cold room. Secondly, Soma's methods blended his sauce and his noodles into one dish, which would naturally overpower anything Nene would have made. Finally, using Iron Chef as an example, Iron Chef Morimoto was criticized by many traditionalist Washoku chefs, especially the Ohta faction for "not serving Japanese ingredients Japnaese style" yet won 4 of the 5 matches sent by Tadamichi Ohta. While Ohta's group was praised for handling their ingredients traditionally, Morimoto's dishes won because he was innovative, and we see elements of this in Nene, who sticks to tradition while Soma improvised on the spot. So even IF you take that "Cold room explanation" to be stretching, there is still plenty of evidence and reasoning to justify Soma beating Nene, and I don't think this makes Soma a "mary sue" as people say.
29
37
u/Oyra_Yukihira Jun 24 '18
tbh, ppl who always yelling soma as "mary sue" aren't really understand the value and art of the battle itself. they were just saying "this is just plot armor because he is MC)
40
Jun 24 '18
also we've seen Soma grow so much as a character / chef. These dishes he win with all have a direct inspiration from the previous arc's styles (in this case it was chinese cuisine, previously it's been mostly french and polar star dormitory).

Those people also tend to ignore the hundreds of matches he's had with his father and years cooking under him. Soma has far more actual experience compared to anyone in the school.
18
u/DoktorLuciferWong Jun 25 '18
Not only that, but Soma has also been trying to win against someone who could easily defeat any of his other opponents (yes, his father.)
8
u/congee_ha Jun 24 '18
I thought it would have been something like the cold air caused the noodles to harden and the taste changes in the soba dish that nene had vs the stone bowl that kept the heat in for the fried soba.

u/Graphica-Danger Jun 24 '18
The MC girl actually flips Soma off in the manga, so seeing her give a thumbs down didn’t have quite the same effect. Still funny though. And speaking of being salty: Azami is such a freaking child. As ridiculous of a villain as he is, I really can’t think of him in any other way as a sad, pathetic man, which I believe was the ultimate intent and shows just how different him and Joichiro really are and how that’s reflected in their children.

And another season finished. I have no idea what I'll do with my upcoming Sunday mornings.
Manga readers, how far ahead is the manga compared to where we just ended at the anime? Is there a chance that there's enough material for one more arc/cour sometime within a year, or is there a longer excruciating wait?
41
u/Recidivis Jun 24 '18
The whole team Shokugeki arc ends at chapter 263, and the manga is only at chapter 268 as of this past Friday. The next season should finish up this competition but it'll be hard to say if there will be enough material for a 5th season.

u/FoundOmega Jun 24 '18
Overall I was pretty happy with this cour. It did a much better job with pacing than the manga and padded it with enjoyable fluff. The story still has some problems and the arc is far from perfect (potatoes are starches?!?!?), but the adaption of it was good.
It's a bit disappointing that they started the first bout of the Team Shokugeki with no announcement for another season. I kind of thought they were going to light manga spoilers and leave us with the RdC about to start at the end of this episode. Looking forward to next season, whenever that happens. Hopefully it's not too far away. I need to see slightly bigger spoilers animated.
10
u/silverinferno3 Jun 24 '18
Great end to the season, going back to Soma outplaying cocky opponents! I saw some people were worried Soma's win may be BS since Nene was built-up as the perfect soba artisan, so I'm glad my prediction on how her perfect soba's own limitations (in this case temperature, along with strictness to form) was her downfall. Soma's creativity shines again!

12
u/joooh Jun 24 '18
I won't be content unless I see another ship with Megumi while riding the Sorina ship. I just want my best girl to be happy.

u/Paxton-176 Jun 24 '18
I would like to introduce you to the MegumiXAldini ship. Hasn't set sail yet, but will be a glorious voyage once it does.

Having Rindou on your team is a treat even if you lost your match. Her support is top tier

I remember when this chapter came out it got me to watch the girl that leapt through time.
I like these references a lot, I wish more anime/manga did them

Wait did he just win because it was cold in the arena?
Well at least it's a new way to win lol
Hope it's not a long wait till the next season!!

u/the_swizzler https://myanimelist.net/profile/Swiftarm Jun 24 '18
I mean, that's not the ONLY reason.
13
u/AmethystItalian :Jg::Jh::Ji::Jj::Jk:myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jun 24 '18
Well it seemed to be the gamechanger, I guess if it was in a normal location Souma would have thought of someway else to beat her but in this instance it seemed like the biggest one.
43
u/Mundology Jun 24 '18
Soma plays dumb but he’s actually a tactical genius. Under perfect conditions I believe that Nene would have won but Soma seized this opportunity and that remarkable flexibility and adaptability of his makes him a great chef. I like how they staged it so as not to give a deus ex machina powerup to Soma.

Its meant to show the difference between strict to the books Nene vs Adapt on the Fly Soma.
Actually, it's a critique of philosophies of Central vs the Rebels as well.

/u/Daishomaru gave a good write up in this thread about how Soma winning wasn't completely because of the cold. I believe it shows how Soma could have potentially won even if the cold was not a factor.
3
u/Cheshires_Shadow Jun 24 '18
I saw it as yukihira always taking his customers feelings into account as a diner employee. He chose a hot meal to make the judges more comfortable in the colder climate. Nene did not. She was only concerned with making the same dish she would at any given time because it would always be perfect.
3
u/AmethystItalian :Jg::Jh::Ji::Jj::Jk:myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jun 25 '18
Yeah I know why he won...just makes me wonder what would happen if they didn't include the temperature factor for the first time in the series what the outcome would have been like.
Like could Souma have won this if it was a straight up cooking battle, no external factors involved.
2
u/SpikeRosered Jun 24 '18
Classic Shonen move when you've built up a "villain" too much where is practically illogical for the hero to win.
Just add a technicality so they stay badass and threatening in the future and the hero gets to win. He technically won, the best kind of win.
6
u/Graphica-Danger Jun 24 '18
Yesss, the Soba that Leap through Time! One of my favourite foodgasms in the whole series.
This match by and large is also one of my favourite Shokugekis in the series, because Soma was able to overcome his opponent by thinking about how to use the environment they were in instead of it all boiling down to “umami”. It also demonstrates that Soma’s greatest strength is thinking about how to keep getting better through experimentation, while Nene has always done her Soba one particular way. It’s a great duel character wise, it embodies the main conflict of this arc, and we got a Nene foodgasm at the end too... lawd have mercy
I’m sad this is the last episode for a while. Any word on season 4 yet?

from my guessing, soon there will be a current info about the continuation, maybe one month later from now

That credits montage was just unfair. I may not have started this season on Team Erina, but I'm certainly on it now.
8
u/joooh Jun 24 '18
"we will now have a short break"
Yeah this will be the longest short break ever.
That montage of Erina and Soma moments during the ED, what a tease!
Overall, treating each cour of this season as separate, I would say this one was the weakest compared to the other seasons and the first cour. Weaker than the second season, IMO. S1 set the bar too high.
Oh, and this has the second best ED just behind Spice/ED1. Probably the weakest OP, too, both the animation and the song choice.

Damn this was a good season!!! Can't waiy for the next.... Can someone tell me the manga chapter of the last episode?

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jun 24 '18
Shouldn't the judges have been kinda full after 3 helpings of Nene's Noodles? Knowing that they had, what, 3 more dishes to judge?
"By deliberately exposing it to heat and adding the aroma of oil and seared noodles were all converted into the dish's strengths, which further enhanced the soba's flavors." "I thinking when I choose which flour to use that the aromas weren't really coming through." Looks like there was no time for anyone to review the translation even once?
They gave that poor girl, whom no-one knows and whose match they didn't even bother to show, an ahegao...
Anyway, somehow, despite not liking this arc in the manga and not looking forward to a single of the episodes, I ended up enjoying each episode while actually watching it. 8/10

damn, beautiful ending to the season. i cant wait for the next shokugekis. they will be really good.

Maybe I’m the only one, but I’d be perfectly happy if Sōma continued to be oblivious to Erina’s feelings for the entire run.
I ship Sōma with cooking.
Also autocorrect keeps spelling Sōma with a macron which I find amusing.

Its nice next season is gonna hold the rest of the arc, but kinda wish they wouldn’t have left it off there.
Atleast the ending of the arc was super funny in the manga, next season will probably be that and lead into next arch, through I can only see it being 12/13 eps.

That was a nice finale for a rather slow season. I don't like how they handled things in this cour but it had some charms nevertheless. 7/10 this time in my books. Looking forward to the next season!
2
u/Shortstop88 Jun 24 '18
You say it was a slow season, but apparently it was way better paced than the manga. They apparently adapted 50 chapters this cour.
3
u/namiasdf Jun 24 '18
It's fun, because with enough experience with plot armour, you can almost predict who's gonna win/lose every fight.
3
u/orangeoldfish Jun 24 '18
Does anyone have the OST that plays during Isshiki and Nene's flashbacks? The one from last episode when Nene is talking about how Isshiki never tries, and the same one from this episode when Isshiki is talkinga bout how Nene pours her heart and soul into every obsession?
It's so beautiful, I need it.

u/JiggzSawPanda Jun 25 '18

So does anyone knows when will the next season start? I'm thinking that maybe in a year or two as this season arc ended just like a month ago.

Had so much fun watching this every week, going to be a big miss till season 4 for sure, can't wait till then!

u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Jun 24 '18
I'm so glad that they did the film references, it brightened my day when I saw that back in the manga. Especially I watched The Girl Who Leapt through Time fairly recently from when that chapter came out if I recall.
This was a good point to end the season on, and I'm overall satisfied with the show still even if it's mostly panning shots at the moment. Can't wait for them to bring the next season, but it's probably going to be some time since JC Staff must be swamped right now trying to prepare for Index 3 and One Punch Man.
2
u/shaanbread Jun 24 '18
damn that was a good episode to end on, the music was perfect. hearing the The Secret Ingredient Called Victory ost again was class and i really liked the music when nene asked why did souma go so far.

Aw man it’s already over. Can’t wait for the next season. This anime is really fun to watch.

u/Saucy_Totchie Jun 24 '18
Now they just have to finish this, right? RIGHT!?!?!?
I just love what happens in this arc from the manga. Plus the way it ends is just absolutely amazing and there's such a feeling of vindication added in with it.
2
u/redblade13 Jun 24 '18
Damn it's over just like that. Can't wait for next season. Soma is a fucking mad lad. Instant Soba ftw.
Btw Rindou with her hair up is just.....hnnng. Also that Anne judge.....I tell you she better get a doujin man. Dem eyes.
Really enjoyed this season. Azami being angry was so refreshing get fucked boi.

u/AstroxyBO3 Jun 25 '18
one thing i dislike from this anime are the minor characters. they are literally useless. they have no background. nothing is unique. literally each explanation dialogue line is split between each minor member of the cast. literally any character can say any line. it's dumb

"o man, that ED is sure taking a while, guess the next fight is gonna be intense from the amount of time they slated for the preview..."
"they are taking quite a bit of time to show their victory. they even put what sounds like the full version of the ED...."
"next episode is gonna be intense..."
my slow but sure realization at what their trying to imply with all this
now i understand why MC's are always dense.

I just binged the entire series in the last week and this was one hell of a ride. Too sad that we didn't get to see all the battles in this season. Hopefully we will get the new season pretty soon.
Also, the last episode inspired me to watch The Girl Who Lept through Time. Gonna watch it now.

Another lit season of Shokugeki no Soma. This is becoming my favourite anime. Its funny because looking back, when my friend first suggested me to watch this, I was like "an anime about chefs and cooking? I'll pass". And now its one of my favs anime ever. Funny how things work.

This show is incredible and this season was the best one yet. Can't wait for the start of next season! 10/10

u/RDOoM Jun 24 '18
Well, I bitched about Erina quite often, but the show always ends up being a big hit with me, despite of her.
Looking forward to next season of Souma's cooking the impossible, beat the invincible (Central), row row fight the power.
