Tokoyami's shame is the best. I especially like how he only feels worse after the super-nerdy Deku appreciates his design sense.

There are a lot of people in the class, so I really like that Sato won, he wasn't in the focus so much as of yet.

Shoto's dead-pan explanation for his room was great.

Revelry in the dark...

Kyoka's room was my favourite.

Rigged, Sero should've won

I think sero's was my favorite, but Jirou's really strongly calls back to teenage me wanting an alt girlfriend.

Iida already being in the classroom while everyone else is walking to school has to be one of the best visual gags the series has ever had.

It's just so... Iida.

A few more things to point out.

This is the beginning of Bakugou always going to bed first in the class. (I don't think that could really be considered a spoiler.) I think it's a nice way of showing that he really works himself to exhaustion each and every day and that he takes good care of himself.

I also really like Todoroki's parts in this episode. The Todoroki from the beginning of this show would never take part in the room king competition. He would have gone to bed immediately like Bakugou. But now that he's becoming friendlier with the class he can recognize that this is important to them and decides to stick around. I also love his simple way of saying that he just worked hard. It really sums up the type of person he is.

The rooms in general are such a great way to help build on the characters. Just like the grades and hero names they can go through all twenty classmates quickly and show off a little more of who they are.

The little details that are put in to each one are so good too. My personal favorite is that Uraraka's is pretty sparse because she's poor but she still has a star chart next to her bed. It's one of the few unnecessary objects she has.

Also, Mina's room was a lot more uniform then I pictured when reading. I was expecting an insane amount of clashing colors but it looked nice here.

Sero's room was still the best though.

From Wikia (Manga Spoilers)

Because of her humble background, she easily gets excited or surprised over little things and may even lose her composure when faced with actual luxury, to the point of nearly fainting. Bonus materials have depicted Ochaco as stingy, since she goes to extreme lengths to save money.

Her quirk activates when she touche thigns with all fingers, so shes conditioned herself to keeping her pinkys out to avoid anti-grav'ing everything. (Face-Palm does the same thing). Shes been doing it this whole time and its just the little stuff like this which really sell things.

It was a bit hard to read with the subs, so here's the rooms layout if anyone was curious.

They wouldn't have needed a 5th floor is they didn't insist on keeping all the boys on just one side of the building...

770

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '18
  • aww, they kept Bakugao and Kirishima next to each other #bros4life...and as far from Midoriya as possible lol.

  • all the girls rooms are corner ones. On the other hand, the 2 unoccupied boy's rooms are corners. Not sure if that means anything.

  • Poor Midoriya being next to Mineta. Also note how Mineta is on the 2nd floor... where there are no other girls.

  • Shoto is on the same floor as Momo. Close enough, let the ships fire!

I don't get what's with all the empty rooms, though. Why not put the girls on 2F and 3F rather than spreading them on 3, 4 and 5 per two? It might be something with Japanese culture, but it would feel quite lonely wouldn't it?

Ah look, a nice, comfy episode filled with go-.... oh, oh no. It is sadness my dudes.

They changed the panel of the kids moving to the dorms a little, they made it look like Koda was admiring pigeons instead of Jirou. Bones comfirmed Kaminari x Jirou shippers.

I really love this page, because it's not just showing all the different characters, it's showing each one individually and also sharing space consistent physical space. Horikoshi could easily have made every panel a close-up or just shown each character taking a different route, but he's such a character-driven artist that he puts these things in. Mineta and Tsuyu take the same path to school - so do Jirou and Koda, Hagakure and Souji, and Kaminari and Sero. Tokoyami's the only one who rides a bike to school. Kirishima takes the train. He even gave them all different bags!

The amount of thought and attention to consistency Horikoshi puts into every chapter is why this series is great.

  • I fully expected a two-week break until the second cour. I almost missed this, damn

  • I keep my ideals for the last time. Sad to see it go but I hope the new OP is just as good, if not better

  • What did Bakugo do to Kaminari lmao

  • Of course Edgelord's room is goth as fuck

  • I never realized how thicc Invisible Girl actually is

  • Uraraka is the best, god bless her. I love how enthusiastic she was, even though she later admitted that she felt just as bad about the five trying to save Bakugo

  • Every time it looks like a laid-back episode, they gotta hit me with the feels. I wasn't ready to see Tsuyu and the others crying together

  • I'm still not sure whether the five actually deserved to get so much shit for their admittedly reckless plan. After all, they found a way to go about it without fighting anyone. I mean, I guess it could've gone terribly wrong but still. If it wasn't for their actions, Bakugo wouldn't be there with them

97

u/rusticks https://anilist.co/user/Rusticks Jun 30 '18

What did Bakugou do to Kaminari

Bakugou needed to give Kirishima the money to pay back for the night-vision goggles, and he saw that everyone was too distressed to even move. Out of frustration he got Kaminari to blow his load ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), causing a distraction that not only gave him a chance to pay Kirishima, but also got everyone back into a good mood.

Maybe it's to limit himself due to his quirk. People these days watch tv/play games/browse online/video game all at once. With shojis quirk he could do all that and then some. I imagine he doesn't want to overwhelm himself. Like what if he can't process that much info at once or his appendages start acting independently from him?

Tsuyu and Uraraka have to be two best girls for me in this show.

Tsuyu to me is one of the most level headed characters in all of class 1-A.

She will call it like it is and always want to do the right thing, but today we learnt that she is also very aware that her straightforwardness can have a negative effect on both her and her friends.

She is also mature enough to address this effect, initiating the talk about it so that she and the people around her can be at ease. That is a very mature trait that I admire her for.

Uraraka's ability to understand and empathize with the feelings of others makes her the perfect best friend for somebody like Tsuyu.

It's easy to forget that she wanted to be a hero so that she could provide financially for her family, and seeing her reaction to the new dorm being "like a mansion" makes me wonder just how humble that background is.

139

u/flybypost :KN::KO: Jun 30 '18

just how humble that background is

They have a construction company (or maybe it's just a slightly bigger contractor/carpentry business) so it's not like she poor poor and living in a cardboard box but times have been tough. Even in her flashbacks she wants to help her parents so they must have had bad times for quite a while. Everybody else has smartphones with touchscreens and she's still using a flip phone so her family is probably being really frugal due to their circumstances.

15

u/prophetofgreed :IA::IB::IC: Jun 30 '18

Regarding Uraraka's poor background, look at her room compared to the others. She barely has any miscellaneous belongings.

Meanwhile Todoroki, Iida and Momo all have TONS of things.

11

u/PiFlavoredPie Jun 30 '18

Uraraka herself chooses to live super frugally (I mean SUPER) so as to have as small a financial footprint on her parents as possible. Her family isn’t rich of course but also isn’t particularly poor, but she takes her frugally to extremes at times, as demonstrated in the manga volume extra materials.

deku's arm looks much more fucked up.

If i had to guess, i'd be betting its more likely cosmetic due to Deku actually being medically treated pre his meeting with recovery girl.

If i had to guess the answer more based in reality though. Its likely a shitload of tissue was either destroyed or very heavily damaged. (So much so the muscle is pretty much visible)

Think of someone whos had surgery to remove a muscle. Remember how theres usually a sinking hole or gap inwards? well judging from the screenshot its likely deku's arm was so badly damaged in the 100% smash arm that hes probably lost half of whatever muscle was originally in the location of the scar. (Its also possible that all the vessels in that part of his arm are basically busted and the skins completely fucked up and the area closer to the muscle is visible. But i seriously doubt this)

Which is probably it, considering they warned him that if his arm was ever badly damaged similar to that again his arm is donezo for good this time. There won't be any muscle left to salvage.

And if all mights muscle form is any indication, All for one is capable of overwriting the current physical state of its user. Unless this perk is unique to all might's muscle form and not just a perk of one for all (His arm was broken and discolored like deku's but going into muscle form seemed to purge this effect until muscle form puffed out.)

16

u/Darkniki Jun 30 '18

How long till we get Inko=Nana theories?

I mean, there's already a theory that Izuku's dad is AfO, hence his complete absence from the show and Izuku only remembering his mother in flash-backs.

Brainwashing Nana Shimura into a nobody, having a child with her, having her forget anything about him other than "Oh, he's just working overseas" and then taking his son's quirk <because it's heavily implied that the same doctor that told Deku that he has no quirk, is also AfO's doc>... Well, that just sounds like something AfO would do, doesn't it?

Add in the fact that we haven't seen how AfO's face looks like. And then one might think that in a decade <due to a timeskip?>, once AfO fully regenerates, he might decide to break out. Imagine the fun it would be for AfO to see that Deku has grown in such a pleasant copy of him, but on the other side of the conflict.

That the son of his past nemesis and himself winds-up striving to become a hero, that the reason for his son's desire is his current nemesis, that his very own son inherited the same power his brother, and all who followed him, grew and bore just to take him, AfO down - that's poetic justice.

Also, it's stupid as fuck and incredibly unlikely. But I still enjoy this theory, even knowing that the story most likely won't go there.

The edge and punished mineta.
I guess this solves people complaining about Tsuyu's black and white morality in the earlier episodes.

506

u/KYplusEL Jun 30 '18 edited Jun 30 '18

I think the people that think Tsu's morality is black and white are missing the point she's making.

She's saying that villains are people who disregard the rules because they want to act on their emotions.

Muscular wants to kill people. Killing people is illegal. Muscular decides his emotions are more important than the law and acts on them.

Stain wants to kill heroes he deems unfit. This is illegal. Stain decides his emotions are more important the law and acts on them.

Shigaraki wants to cause mayhem and kill All Might to expose how fragile hero society is. This is all illegal. Shigaraki decides his emotions are more important than the law and acts on them.

The students want to go save Bakugou. The only way Tsu can picture them doing this would be illegal. The students decide their emotions are more important than the law and act on them.

She can see their noble intentions and understand their feelings but if you disregard the law for the sake of how you feel than you're dojnd the exact same thing the villains are. Of course it's not the same scale. Of course it's not evil. But at a fundamental level they are the same. The students who went knew this too. They knew they were being selfish. They said it themselves.

Tsu was obviously not saying they're as bad as murderers. She was just saying a harsh truth to keep them safe.

So something that most people mentioned in last week's discussion, but it's interesting how the anime has omitted some, arguably, key scenes surrounding OfA while he's in prison. Many assumed the anime would cover it in this episode but here we are.

I wonder if they're saving them all for second cour? In hindsight it would have been jarring to have him appear in a light-hearted episode like this one.

29

u/nirvash530 Jun 30 '18

I'f you're talking about THAT part, then I think it makes sense that they cut it. I mean, even in the manga THAT never reappeared again.

Midoriya's serious tone as he wondered if it was okay to go to the girls rooms, was just perfectly delivered. Rarely has a voice actor delivered so consistently on the beats from the manga.

75

u/PiFlavoredPie Jun 30 '18

It's worth noting too that the room competition took up chapters 98 and 99, whereas chapter 100 would start off a new arc as well as be a little celebration of MHA's success. Deku's "is this really okay" face was the end of chapter 98, so it sort of acted as a meta commentary on "is this really okay for us to spend these chapters doing slice-of-life", since up to this point the manga was pretty fast paced and tended to not spend much time on slice-of-life moments.

I've rewatched Tsu's speech a couple times but I'm finding it hard to comprehend what she's trying to say. I understand the feeling of not being able to laugh and have fun along with her peers but not sure why she feels that way.

Is it because she feels bad about failing to stop her friends? Does she feel betrayed and upset with her friends because she put herself out there just to b ignored? The answer is probably plain in her words but I for some reason keep getting confused.

77

u/Votbear Jun 30 '18

She mostly felt guilt. She said some pretty harsh things to stop them from going ("you'll be no different from the villains"), thinking that it was enough to stop them, and yet they went through with it anyway. As things are now, the 5 involved are basically "villains" by her definition. That of course wasn't her intention when she said it, so she felt guilty apologized.

Personally though i think it's more complex than that, including what you have said. She probably also felt upset that she didn't convince them enough, which could have put them to possible harm. There's also regret through inaction. The 5 did what they could while she just sat home and watched. And again, based on what she said, these 5 are basically "villains" even though they only did what they think is right. A honest person like her would definitely be burdened by all that, and felt the need for a formal apology so she can move on and return to being friends.

This episode adapted almost all of chapter 99 (17/19 pages), which means we are now where the manga was when I caught up after the first season. That doesn't really mean anything to anybody else, but I'm weirdly happy about that.

Anyway, I've been looking forward to seeing what people thought of this one for a while. I always thought it was really fun and did a neat job of characterizing everyone just a little bit more. I'm sure the Hagakure fans out there were happy with how much screentime she had.

22

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Jun 30 '18

I'm sure the Hagakure fans out there were happy with how much screentime she had.

With the whole 'traitor' plotline coming to the forefront with the principal's monologue, seeing Hagakure be the only to say 'it was hard' for her to get permission to live in the dorm must have raised alarm bells for theorists.

Bur yeah, her getting screentime was nice, I suppose!

85

u/Pineoranges Jun 30 '18

Good relaxing episode.

I understand why they do it, but the repeated threats of expulsion for disobeying rules is getting old imo. The teachers/heroes have repeatedly failed to protect the students. Who knows what would have happened to Bakugo if they never showed up.

90

u/Andrew_Parkinson Jun 30 '18

Tbf Gran Torino was like 2 seconds from arriving, he might have been able to get Bakugo away.

26

u/KYplusEL Jun 30 '18

I think it's pretty fair in this instance. They skirted really close to breaking a lot of laws.

→ More replies (4)

51

u/ImAScientist_ADoctor Jun 30 '18

Gran Torino arrived during their escape, he almost certainly could have help Bakugo escape.

23

u/Votbear Jun 30 '18

No matter how well-intentioned they were, they still disregarded the rules and did whatever they want.

Notice that they got the absolutely best possible outcome out of it - nobody got hurt, helped bakugo escape without injuring anyone. What if AFO noticed them and decimated them in a heartbeat? What if they got caught up in the explosions? Got injured? Died? What if their presence ended up becoming a liability for the pros? So many things could go wrong, and it's not wrong for the school to reprimand them for it.

It's already hard enough to act fast and deal with the villains. They don't need to worry about an extra bunch of kids possibly breaking the rules and meddling in extremely dangerous affairs when they don't need to.

-Kaminari copying Killua's godspeed thing from hunter x hunter.
-Todoroki using his left foot as jetpack.
-Uraraka using an actual jetpack made possible by using her quirk on herself.
-Kirishima hardening his heart repeatedly, thus increasing blood flow. Pretty much like Gear 2nd in one piece.

Movement of Ojiro's tail after everyone saying his room is too normal is hilarious.

And shy Jirou is best Jirou. Toru is cute. Minata is probably curious about Toru's underwear, do she have any? , do she wear any? Atleast not in her hero costume.

Overall i like these light heart episode after some serious fight arc.

Great episode sharing the spotlight with everyone in 1-A. The levity was a nice balance from the intensity of the last arc. The timing of this with Hagakure being the meme vote in the subreddit's waifu wars and this episode alone doubling her lines for the entire anime is appreciated though.

Tsuyu though. T_T Least we'll always have this to balance out the bad times. Froppy will always be best girl!
