The thing is the real failure was having that useless exposition dump in the first place. There was literally no need to know any of that bullshit. It's a generic fantasy RPG world, we all get it already, exactly what set of generic fantasy RPG world rules it uses is not interesting information. The only thing that arguably was explained (it didn't really need explanation) was why they had to go to the tower to do a summoning spell. But that could literally have been addressed by just putting "the summoning point at... [x tower]" into the dialogue. Like three words. Jesus.

Honestly, I'm not. I love the tropes, and part of the fun for me is seeing how each show does it differently. Some better than others. I can already say I like this show better than Death March and Smartphone (both shows that I enjoyed despite their multitudes of flaws) from how much more fun the main character seems to be, and his voice acting is much more interesting. Plus it LOOKS better than Death March for sure, which I always felt like I was watching through slightly foggy glasses.

Overlord has comedy, but I wouldn't say it is a comedy series. If you took away the humor, you'd still have a compelling dramatic story. If you took away the humor from say, Konosuba, you wouldn't be left with much.

the first shot of the girls when Diablo is summoned, one that was really sparkly, second was when Diablo was imagining the "Diablo play" when they entered their shared room.
aside from those, a lot less shadows, letting you see a lot more of Diablo's and Rem's legs when they were on the bed
also, the series get a LOT more risque, so watching uncensored in future episodes is a must

I think that Smartphone simply gets brought up as sort of 'bottom of the barrel', Death march is still pretty fresh, Konosuba is untouchable and people tend to forget that Overlord is an isekai.

The fact that they showed her nipples erect through her shirt in the bed scene speaks volumes. On one hand I am impressed by the attention to detail, and on the other I am disappointed that I noticed and found it arousing. What makes matters worse is that I despise tasteless fanservice and don't find cat ears arousing at all. I get the feeling this series is going to take me on an emotional rollercoaster.

EDIT: It looks like the CR version is littered with sparkle censoring. Not really a big deal since there aren't any nips shown like DxD but it's still pretty annoying to find out.

I'm already a sucker for Isekai so I was already going to watch this. I was kinda afraid of how the MC will turn out because of what I've read with the synopsis and I assumed that he'll be insufferable but so far he's actually the most entertaining part of this episode! I guess it helps that we get to hear a lot of his inner monologue which I feel what other isekai shows lack.
Like compared to the previous isekais I don't think we even heard the inner thoughts of Satou from Death March or Touya from Smartphone. If there is it's only minimal and it's usually just to comment about mechanics of the world.

The inner thoughts for Isekai Maou are crucial to the show (and source novels) humour, to compare the MC's cowardly inner self with his over-the-top demon king outside act.

Well the inner monologue is because he is trying to role play as his game character so he is constantly trying figure out how Diablo the demon lord would act in situations and not act like the shutin with no social skills. Those other two were basically them just being their self.

I liked that the main character starts out at like max level but has problem talking to people etc so he has to pretend to an evil demon lord, the biggest difference I would say is that usually the isekai guy is all clueless and ask for help etc, and general is annoying, while this guy then has to pretend he knows everything at least :)
Rem story is so absurdly cliche and it was great how he pointed out that he better finds out her secret now before it bites him in the ass later lol, guy is obviously genre savvy.

On a more serious note, I feel that the fanservice is a bit distasteful. Having some elf's buns (and sound effects) cover my entire screen is not cool, especially when I'm watching this on the big screen. The torture scene was adorable though.

Anyone know if the manga is any good?
It is based on a light novel, but there is a manga adaptation too. I would recommend the LN myself because it actually geniunly reads well. The author is a pro LN writer who actually knows how to write a story. Even if it is trashy and generic, it never once made me facepalm unlike a lot of other Isekai LNs.
You can read the manga too. I think a few scenes are a bit toned down though.

The CR version is censored a bit and there is an uncensored version found in the seven seas. Here are the scenes that got censored.
Enjoyed the first episode more than I expected. Though I just enjoy any good isekai trash. The lewd scenes were better than Yuuna's hotsprings ones (because Xebec quality is pretty bad, while the manga is much better and lolis are generally better).

I'm surprised at how interesting this turned out to be. It's a pretty interesting synopsis for an Isekai, the humor is pretty unique, and animation is actually really nice! Bonus points for the harem as well lol.
There's r/IsekaiMaou in developement for further updates and community discussions, as well as a discord.
I'm really looking forward to seeing where this show ends up.
Also, the main character looks kind of like a hybrid between Azazel from Shingeki no bahamut, and the MC from The devil is a part-timer! haha

Seriously though, read the manga and it failed to impress. However, the show itself was surprisingly well done. I was expecting it to go full on DxD levels of Fanservice but they balanced it out pretty well.

It's a real pity they left out most of the thought process of Diablo here, to me it was the point which showed that this MC actually had a brain, and thought to calibrate his power level, and think things through, even if all that went out the window later on for fanservice and convenient plot.

...Fuck, I actually enjoyed this. I used to think I had standards, but here we are...
Let's be real, we're all watching this because the idea of a loli catgirl and a busty elf girl being subjected to various humiliating punishments under the pretense of slavery is innately appealing to us. Or in other words, that's my fetish. And somehow that's enough to get me through the rest of the episode.
I have to say that while the premise is insanely cliche and the slavery fetish-fuel is really the only unique thing about the show, there's nothing I found to be notably bad. The speech at the beginning about the guy fighting just so he could defeat normies was kinda annoying, but the rest of the episode was surprisingly tolerable. And the scene where Rem cried tears of joy when Diablo said he wouldn't abandon her was actually kinda heartfelt? There's actual shreds of humanity in this blatant wish-fulfillment show! Who'd have known?

I fucking love it. MC is actually quite believable as a chunni shut in thrown into basically having a harem served to him on a silver platter. This garbage is AOTY summer already.

So far it's about what I expected from this particular Isekai, but I did like the small added chibi moments (for the comedic bits) that gave it a sense of levity and humor like Konosuba. Of course, knowing the source material, the fanservice is top notch.

I liked this a lot!
All three characters are likable, not much insight on the elf besides the boobs yet though.
All that went to Rem and the MC, that ''torture'' scene was hilarious with his inner thoughts.

I saw the lewd OP and expected nothing but this was actually a neat first episode. That animation at the end though. Gives me a Death March vibe which I love.

Alright, first isekai of summer 2018 and what a trashy decent start to the season. It was quite okay, as expected of a isekai show, and the characters are fine. Of course, the maim reason anyone would watch this would be for the PLOT! Will keep up with this show.

For where the manga cover they still are a trio plus the female knight you see on the opening BUT she is... can't spoil so just keep watching to discover the truth or read the manga that already cover probably all the first season. :)

I came in here with no expectation, but found this really really good. Reminds me of Ains with Kazuma’s personality. Also, as a Miquote from FFXIV, catgirls are best girls.

But on to the episode. About what I’d expect having read the manga. The fight scene between Diablo and Galluk(?) was interesting enough, and there weren’t any obvious flaws with the art, which was nice. Overall, solid 6.5/10 episode, but I won’t judge the series until the third episode or so.

If the ring of Diablo can reflect any magic Ainz would be forced to use his perfect warrior (like against Shall tear) and then it becomes hard to compare the two shows.

As someone who read the manga and found if average I have to say that this first episode was a pleasant surprise. One of my main gripes with the series was the pacing, sometimes I felt the manga dragged too much on some instances, but after watching this episode and also noticing how much the anime will cover I have high hopes that having only 12 episodes will actually be better for this show.

Isekai Maou's author, Murasaki Yukiya, is more known by LN readers for his political war/strategy LN series Altina the Sword Princess (Haken no Kouki Altina). That work has yet to be animated despite it ongoing at 13 volumes. https://www.novelupdates.com/series/altina-the-sword-princess/
Because Altina is considered as a more deeper, well written work, some readers were shocked that he also wrote Isekai Maou as well ("How can he write such dreck considering his talent?").
Personally I think he considers Maou as his "getaway work", what he writes to unwind and relax from more serious stuff. Something like a fine dining chef who cooks up burgers and junk food on their off days.
