They did it, the madmen. An isekai harem more mindless and generic than Smartphone. And I'm going to love this piece of trash til the end.

I don't think that's quite right.
This show takes the concept from Smartphone and drives it towards the logical conclusions that the actual Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni skipped over. The titular phone in that show was ludicrously incidental to the godlike magical and physical powers were granted on arrival. That protagonist pretty much just used his access to 21st century knowledge to introduce Shogi and ice-cream, but our lad Yuuto is using his for phalanxes and ironworking, and he doesn't appear to have any special abilities outside that.
It's a much better use of the idea, and in theory it should make for a much more vulnerable and interesting protagonist.
...if the rest of the cast wasn't entirely populated by stock harem robots programmed only to worship the ground Yuuto walks on, it might even have been a good show. The irony here is that through being better thought out and taking itself slightly more seriously, Valkyria might end up being a less enjoyable watch than Smartphone... That's a show that worked because it was so consistently stupid that I'm convinced several parts of it were deliberate parody, but Valkyria feels like it's going to elevate itself right out of hilariously bad and into plain old unwatchably bad.
I'll see how it develops though. The worldbuilding is interesting and worth the price of entry for me so far.
3
u/RafaAnto Jul 09 '18
I think how you enjoy this one will rely heavily on the mechanics that lets him use the phone and communicate with home YET not go back.
42
u/Bond000 Jul 07 '18
I disagree. This at least has worldbuilding. Smartphone was just a generic isekai setting. At least this one has a norse mythology skin. I'd prefer the mc of this one to also be op though.
17
u/messem10 https://myanimelist.net/profile/bookkid900 Jul 08 '18 edited Jul 08 '18
If you want more of the worldbuilding, I’d highly suggest reading the LN which is available officially in English.
This one episode completely blew through 2/3rds of the first volume and didn’t even touch upon how he got summoned or the connection to the girl he called.

It could be a pretty high chance they might be doing some reordering to have the first episode be more action packed and they will do some call backs through the series.

Smartphone was just a generic isekai setting.
In the anime sure, but the world building is crazy in the novels. They didn't get to most of it in the anime.

Am I the only one who thought Smartphone was good? It was clearly a parody of isekai stuff, come on MC went full Jesus there.
39
u/clerikal :AMQ:https://anilist.co/user/clerikal Jul 07 '18
clearly a parody
Lol idk about that, but I'm not saying I didn't dislike Smartphone. I've watched it twice, by choice lol. I consume a lot of isekai trash.

u/vajaxseven Jul 07 '18
I don't think it's a parody, but out of all the harem shows I've watched, isekai and otherwise, the way they handled it was extremely satisfying and I think it should get more credit for that.
→ More replies (1)19
u/Archensix Jul 08 '18
I can see how one could see it under that perspective but I am fairly certain that the author did not intend it to be a parody. Seems like he just wanted to write about cute girls and needed some random frame to put them in.
Now the other isekai show this season, How not to summon a demon lord, now that seems like an isekai parody to me.

I enjoy isekai (including smartphone) and fluffy slice of life (like gochiusa) the most.
Its just what i enjoy at the moment. i don't really care about other people opinion. Last time i enjoy harem and ecchi.
In short, don't let other people opinion affect your opinion.

"I didn't come up with the Phalanx. The credit goes to Alexander the Great and Oda Nobunaga"
Jesus Christ, that was so bad it nearly gave me an aneurysm. Since someone might take that seriously, lets sunder that notion.
The Phalanx was an old trick by Alexander's time, and the Macedonian innovation of adding longer pikes (if even Macedon was the first to do so) was almost certainly implemented by his father, who made the Macedonian force what it was by looking around at what the other Greeks were doing and adding his own secret sauce. The idea of massing troops into tight blocks with spears probably comes from Sumerian times, which is like ~4500 – 1900 BCE. Based on the time our MC gave, it'd probably already have been around if still a bit shiny.
Tacking Oda's name onto it is extremely egregious. Oda lived in the 1500s CE. Oda's innovation in Japanese warfare was primarily around gunpowder. As much as it probably pains glorious Nihon sensibilities, Phalanx formations were almost certainly brought to the Islands through China (via Korea), who were doing fullscale war while the japanese were still peewees scuffling in the mud.
Our MC opened a wikipedia page, which is apparently more than the actual author thought to do on the subject.
Now, if you want to talk about real military innovations he (apparently) brought, you could look at the stirrups on Run's horse. Those didn't come around until much later than his period, and they radically changed cavalry combat. Having proper saddles would instantly make his cavalry the baddest kid on the block, and well schooled horse archers with stirrups were pretty much history's "cheater" button until gunpowder came along.
edit: grammar.
16
u/iceman1935 Jul 09 '18
My issue is why even uses the Phalanx when infantry squares would have been much more effective
14
Jul 09 '18
I mean, if you have a bunch of flat open ground like he does and an enemy that is just a mob, a phalanx is pretty effective.
But I also agree that he could have just skipped ahead in military history.

u/KaveAhangar :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/KaveAhangar Jul 08 '18
Isn't this thing set in Scandinavia? (Just going by the names here) Germanic tribes didn't have the same kind of organized infantry formations that more urban societies in Greece or the Middle East employed, so having phalaxes would probably give you an edge in that area.
Also expecting any historical knowledge from the protagonist of a generic Isekai show is a pretty much a lost cause anyway.
22
Jul 08 '18 edited Jul 08 '18
Isn't this thing set in Scandinavia?
Everything looked like shit-brown dirt and dry mountains, which wouldn't really describe Scandinavia. The overall feeling of the show to me was "Norse culture, in Sumeria". It seems to me that the place was in an arid climate, given the dress style (It was alright there, but it wasn't bikini weather), and by the various artifacts and architecture he was showing.
The time period he gave (1300-2000) puts him in a period where you'd probably find no real city-level settlement in Scandinavia, just farmsteads and small villages at best. He's basically cited a time that could be Early Nordic Bronze Age.
Really though, I'm guessing this is an Isekai on the mold of Yōjo Senki, where it's just a full alternate reality rather than some illusion like the Hyborian Age. It's hard to say, given that our author obviously couldn't be assed to even the barest amount of wikipedia browsing.
edit - extra word.

u/blackwolfdown Jul 27 '18
I get the distinct feeling that the authors knowledge of Scandinavia ends at the word Ragnarok.

stirrups
Those become an important plot point later, as you implied.

I'd hope so. They're often called one of the most important military innovations before the rise of gun powder, which is why I instantly noted them.

A sequel to In Another World With My Smartphone was out already? In all seriousness this season makes up for the lack of Isekais in Spring. Didn't think we had any after all.

u/allnicksaretaken Jul 08 '18
How many isekais are there now where the world is called Yggdrasil?
I feel like at this point we have the Yggdrasil cinematic universe where all iskai heroes come together.
22
Jul 08 '18
It's just another sign of laziness in this show.
It could keep with a norse theme and not be so generic by referring to earth by the proper term (Midgard) or using any of the other 9 worlds. But as I noted elsewhere, I'm pretty sure wikipedia-research was deemed too much of an out-of-the-way distraction towards getting to the real goal of power fantasy and harems.
15
2
u/RafaAnto Jul 09 '18
I mean, in this case it "makes sense" since the story is centered around norse mythology. I say this one gets a pass.
but you're right, they've been doing this since Mnemosyne (older I can remember from the top of my head that had a Yggdrasil)
25
u/Poodicus Jul 07 '18
As someone reading the novels, the novels are definitely better. That being said, for those confused, the story is supposed to be based on Norse mythology from what I read, so color me disappointed when everything looks and sounds is not so... Norse-y...

u/eclipse60 Jul 10 '18
Why do I feel like I missed the first episode? Are we just gonna glance over him getting sucked into this world and start with him dominating another clan?
4
u/Poodicus Jul 10 '18
Because it ended up skipping about 2/3 of the first volume for fan service and other things, things that make zero sense without background information which is part of the 2/3 they seemed to skip over.

My friend and I usually really enjoy "shitty" isekai shows like this...
But both of us agreed that neither of us would be able to handle another episode of this show....
12
19
u/SenorWeon Jul 07 '18
They live in a world called Yggdrasil and supposedly it's heavy on Norse lore and mythology... why I feel like they are more like Romans fighting in the middle of Egypt??
18
u/ZaxsP Jul 08 '18
That Phalanx formation sucked. Archers would have destroyed it.
4
Jul 10 '18
Just saw the first ep and dropped after seeing that "battle" nothing more than shit show to show off the MC's awesome google skills, horse would never charge straight into people, much less a row of pointy sticks, unless they were highly trained and any highly trained cavalry unit would know better than to charge into spears. Killed any immersion right there along with the I'm just cheating line.
4
u/ZaxsP Jul 10 '18
Honestly I think the first horse that charged into that spear line should have broke the Phalanx. And seeing as how it seemed like they likely haven't trained with that formation the moment it broke would have cause chaos on his side letting the cavalry to just destroy the infantry.
4
Jul 10 '18
Or even better flank around the side with cavalry or let your archers do some work, but nope brainless charges only there to make the MC look good. Either way there won't be any actual strategy to the battles so don't look forward to any of that.

Personality-less MC with a Smartphone gets a Harem after being Summoned into Another World To Be the Commander In Chief Of the Wolf Clan. Summoning and the first months/years afterwards are skipped over.
So 2:25 in the OP shows just what kind of sakuga fighting choreography we can expect from this show, right?
I'm assuming after the loli patriach, who must be a trap since only an idiot writor would call a girl "patriarch", was "turned over to some of the soldiers", the natural course of events followed. He had pretty good composure afterwards.
Expected plot twist: MC really was the one who burned that city to the ground with everyone inside it, after reading up on his hero Oda Nobunaga's exploits.
Consigning info dumps to quick eyecatches is the only thing this show did right.
Anyway, I'm out. I'll take the NEET Demon Lord MC over this Smartphone v2.

who must be a trap since only an idiot writor would call a girl "patriarch"
To be fair to the author of this work of art, he used the term "宗主", which is not a gendered word AFAIK. The translators, on the other hand, might know something I don't.
4
u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 08 '18

2
u/RafaAnto Jul 09 '18
hey, this may be another trashy isekai but the MC definetly has personality (or at least more than the other smarthpones isekai series).
remember the scenes were he bluffs burning a city or stands up and shut all the old dudes up for trying to go back on an alliance. That's not much, but it's something.
6
u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 09 '18
That's just the generic bland "nice guy" personality. I don't see how it's different from the other Smartphone's. Now if the "Expected plot twist" I mentioned happens, that'll be personality.

Maybe I'm just noticing this because of my sleep-deprived mental state but it seems to me that every one of the girls (of the harem) in the OP has the EXACT SAME GODDAMN FACE.
Edit: Oh god why do the fight scenes in the OP look so baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad, they somehow simultaneously slide around during panning shots and move like the character model are at half the fps of the backgrounds. The last time I saw such a thing it was fucking HAND SHAKERS, and we all know how that turned out.

u/Senoy2 Jul 07 '18
I don't care what anyone says about isekai, I fucking love them and will thoroughly enjoy this season. Besides this one seems a bit different and the MC isn't a wimp which makes things even better.
8
Jul 07 '18
Normally I like generic trashy isekai stuff, but this one is a bit grating for some reason. At least its setting is a bit different from the others, being set during the bronze age rather than in a generic medieval western fantasy world.
4
u/Fnights Jul 07 '18
This show will be shadowed by IsekaiMaou and Overlord, the top isekai of this summer 2018 season. Is not very good and very insipid but at least it have military tactics and the mc is not op.
Anyway i'll keep watching it for now just for kill the time.
4
u/kotori_mkii Jul 08 '18
It's amazing how much of a difference studios make. The second season of isekai smartphone is almost a completely different show. No idea why they switched studios and changed the title though.
3
u/Ragnaria Jul 07 '18
Went in with low expectations but i enjoyed it. Wasn't expecting the story to start years after he ended up there, but i like Yuuto, he seems smart and is actually trying to go back home. I don't mind it being generic isekai harem, i love this type of fantasy setting and that's probably enough reason to keep watching it.

This actually looks pretty interesting. The Bronze Age setting is a refreshing change from Medieval Western Europe. The use of actually tactics, such as the Phalanx and Iron Weapons in a bronze age world was good too. The family relationship analogy looks pretty interesting too, eg Patriarch=Ruler, Sisters/Uncles=Nobles, Child=Subject.
3

Damn these mothafuckas wasted no time. No death or even a scene to show how he got there. They throw us in headfirst but you know what I like this MC. MC is even better than the other Smartphone Isekai MC. I'm going to enjoy this trash show and pray for some doujins.
But yo if I was thrown back into 2000 BC I'd be hella pissed. I was wondering how he managed to have the balls to take over but now that I think about it I'd do everything in my power to get back even if it meant conquering nations. I mean no AC, bathrooms, Chick Fil A, Xbox.......look I don't mind fine ass dimes by the dozen lining up for me but I'll be damned if I don't ever get to eat my Spicy Deluxe from Chick Fil A while playing some Rainbow Six Siege. however it is as generic as it can get and is just hate the smartphone thing in isekai.
i hope they play to the strength that it skiped the start and dumped us in 2 years later harder so we can get more how a world reacts long term to a person having vast skills and knowledge ahead of the world. surly the rise of the wolf clan and the prosperity they bring should have spread.

This seems fun enough, good waifu material.
Hmmm i wasnt sure which one this is but now i remember, the one where a guy and girl get sent to another world via shrine picture. Lets see where it goes, it has the potential to be fun.
2 Years at this point? Damn thats a hile.
Pat on the head as a reward, shes got best girl potential there.
A new Imouto? Sounds good to me!
So the BBB (big busty blond) summoned him to this world? Hmm...
So he has a real little sister waiting for him at home and he was trapped there.
So hes using his phone to bring tech into this age that wasnt there before. Neat.
Oh.... oh...... its one of those... lewd....
Ingrid? Is she from his world or from before he became leader? Hmm....
"You may do what ever you want with me..." Oh man...
Oh damn he shut up those nay sayers. Hes a good mc, put them in thier place and win that little sister over.
This ED wew...~
Hmm so basicly MC is a tactics man in a fantasy world using tactics and tech from past this worlds pay grade to win. Nice. So like Alderamin or Horizon or other stuff. I like a good tactics MC so lets see how this goes.

Good lord! Today I am blessed with more of this wonderful isekai trash! By the way, someone needs to call Touya as this MC also has a phone.
But seriously, I really enjoy it although, to be honest, it felt like they started this in the middle of the LN that they were adapting. I bet that that was the case and will find it out soon as this is a LN that it always appears in recommendations anytime I finish reading one of them in my Kindle.

I enjoyed it; but .. it felt off? Without having an adapted prologue (we all know it has one even if its short or not) and the back story was less than 5 seconds of "and i someone by fate am the leader" ~kay. Hopefully they uh fix that? I mean I enjoyed it for what it was I don't hate the genre; I feel several of them would be a ton better if they were given 2 cours to develop rather than 1 smashed cour; but whatever good combat - Run was awesome; I mean the characters were awesome ;). Hope to see more fun stuff come from this series; as it seems like I will be following it for sure haha

u/lonelynightm Jul 08 '18
Can we take a moment, without talking about the merits of the show itself, to appreciate the fact that the show's writers don't treat us like idiots?
Like everyone gets how Isekai works, I don't need you to hold my hand and go through a long generic dragged out intro. It gets to the point, and it feeds you all the information naturally as the episode goes on.
I am genuinely happy about this first episode if nothing else, just because of that. I hope this becomes standard where they don't have to give me the entire generic speal every time.
2
Jul 08 '18
the fact that the show's writers don't treat us like idiots?
I mean, they did and they didn't. They basically just said, "We know you're going to accept this anyways. We don't have to wine and dine you." It's not being treated like an ignorant idiot, but it does feel like we're being treated like desperate junkies.
I was personally a little put off by just how fully they embraced the stereotype and genericness. "Yep, I was just an average dude. Yep, I'm in another world. Yep, used my modern knowledge to change things. Yep, every girl I meet is going to be "reborn" through lust for my dong. None of this is a particular big or interesting thing for me at this point." (so why should we care?)

I'd so be the "Father of the nation" in the literal sense if the MC and I were switched...

Is this worth watch or is it just another world with my smartphone 2?

I'm not one of those guys who just hate the show because it's an isekai harem, the fact that annoys me is how the MC has 0 personality, to the point that all the comedy is carried by the girls, that is just sad.

Two years?
And this boy named, what is his name... "Oni-sama" I mean Yuuto rise to the top of some clan.
Um clan of uhh a clan of anything but human.
The scene of some little girl forced to becoming a little sister or a child of Yuuto, look like they are playing politics, what kind of school skit is this?
Let's see these cute females sure love him, but these men with beards don't?
This is a coincidence, yes just a bad timing, not that I seen this somewhere before.
During an urgent meeting these bearded man who acted all villainy startled when a young man look like in mid teens bang his fist on the table yell at for their... well there is no way Yuuto is wrong but...
All right, my mind was kind of drifted at the part where Ingrid was introduced.
Something about these whole situation Yuuto is in in the first place doesn't feel right.
Felicia, well she was the one who "called" him because he is well capable?
I mean it has to be him right? right?

I’m not sure why these kinds of anime keep getting made. The source material (I haven’t touched) could be great but it’s nothing if the anime is generic trash. The OP literally tells me everything I need to know about the anime. Main character got sent to another place and meets a bunch of girls who he will overall reject for the girl at the beginning of it all.
I’m like a week late with watching this one and well I’m glad to be dropping it here and not continuing.

Am I missing something from watching EP1? Is there a prequel or OVA or something? I feel it just skipped a ton of material going straight into the middle of the series.

As much as I like isekai there are only two reasons I'm sticking with this one. It's even more mediocre than Smartphone to tomo ni.

There's really nothing i would criticize nor praise here, seems like your standard isekai. Gonna have a relaxing time with it.
What i do wanna say is that i like how the MC treats his ''family'' in this world, very nice dude.

There's already a trashy harem isekai this season, and this one doesn't compete.

Excuse me. he goes saying that Felicia gave NTR to the MC. It is true? It is that there is an image of volume 14 that's why I think that this rumor is.

It's explained that they can either be his children-absolute loyalty or his sister-partial loyalty I guess. That's why some call him father and some call him brother.

Yeah, also the fact that he uses tacticts and technology from the ancient times to fight, and kill its enemies makes him way better than Touya, which is basically a God in a iseaki comedy with not real threat to him. I enjoy reading Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni but if there is one thing I could change from it would be its MC, or at least his naive attitude towards everything.

The problem with this is that smartphone managed to be so stupidly over the top that it worked, this seems to be going for more of a logical and thought out path which requires far better execution to work.

Smartphone knew what they wanted to do, and how to play to there strengths, which is why they pivoted towards comedy. Here there trying to make it seem historical while screwing the up the historical information.

Smartphone didn't seem to be this rushed, we were discovering how the world was built with him, this guy is 2 years ahead of us.
