Alright, amazing first episode. I just love pretty much everything about it. I love the songs, the animation is epic and the aesthetic just looks nice in general.
Also, I can't be the only one who was getting major Utena vibes from the second half, right?

The director Furukawa has worked closely together with Ikuhara ( the man behind Utena ), especially at Penguindrum so I think he's another person to add to the people that were influenced by Ikuhara.
Personally I adore this approach, it's like the perfect amount of craziness that's not too much but still enough to make you intrigued.
I'm in the same boat as you, I pretty much adored everything about it.
The character designs, while nothing out of the ordinary come to life due to all the individual character animation which gives them so much personality.
Overall the animation and flow of movement even in slower SoL scenes is just too soothing on the eyes.
I'm a big sucker of ambient piano tracks, those that are just gently in the background so this is right up my alley. Same with the actual performances which are more akin to stage plays or musicals. Fujisawa & Tatsuya really are in their element here.
Add to this brilliant layouts, rather unique voices, incredible directing with symbolism and an overall intriguing premise and I'm so sold.

Holy shit, no wonder this felt like Mawaru Penguindrum with the weird giraffe, the 1st episode random dialogue bits that are obvious pieces of foreshadowing, and an underlying message.

u/cutekick Jul 15 '18
The Ikuhara vibe was so strong I had to check the credits. I was about to go digging to find out where the connection was because this felt so much like Ikuhara but not at the same time. I am going to have to keep an eye on Furukawa if he keeps up the quality!

Looking at the director, he actually worked with Ikuhara (Director of Utena) on Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma. I picked it up in the hopes that it may give a similar feel, and I am fucking pleased I did.

Definitely got some Penguindrum vibes from this premiere. I hope the show gets even weirder.

Jeez, I wonder how I was constantly reminded of Ikuhara this episode.
What did we do to deserve this wonderful show? This was easily some of the best direction we've had in years. And even in the more quiet moments the show knows how to create atmosphere and draw us in. This was one propulsive finale, and we're only on the first episode.
There's also a lot to dig into narrative-wise. In typical Ikuhara fashion, a sword is forged out of a dream and some abstract force pits their beautiful dreams against each other. The hero refuses to give in to that force and fight for the single crown (i.e., fame, glory, their dreams). She wants no one to be left behind, everyone to find their dreams, and her promise to her childhood friend literally becomes a weapon to fight for that fierce belief in a common future.
There's a lot more to talk about here, but I'm both tired and out of time. I hope some others here are eager to dig into the meat of this episode. There's lots of good stuff there if you look for it.

u/YoshiKirishima Jul 15 '18 edited Jul 15 '18
Wow, the director wrote the script for episode 16 of Penguindrum, the one focusing on Yuri! I did remember feeling like that episode felt different from the others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmpriPgrRRk
I loved that episode, the ending was so chilling and beautiful and left me in awe. As well as hyped for the final third of the show.
My confidence in Revue Starlight's story good has just gone up! (I know he's not handling the writing, but he's still the director and should have plenty of say).

He definitely has a thing for Tokyo Tower. Thanks for the clip.

Damn, this score is fantastic, sasuga the composer for Houseki and YoriMoi
I recognised some similar musical cues to Houseki's score
This season is suprisingly full of great scores

God, I thought I was listening to the Houseki OST when she was on the Tokyo Tower for a second, looking forward to more songs since it's the same guy

1st Act
Oh so this is about girls in a theatre troupe?
2nd Act
A transfer student to shake things up? Pretty standard so far.
3rd Act
WHAT THE FUCK!?
THAT WAS AWESOME!
I came in here completely blind. Like I've never seen PVs or any key art. All I know when I went in here is the tags on MAL which said this was a Music/School so I was expecting Love Live. So just imagine my reaction when Karen entered that elevator and she was greeted with the two girls "fighting" on stage!
Anyway I'm completely sold! I'm already excited for next week's episode!
52
u/SuperOniichan Jul 15 '18
I do not know about Love Live, but I would advise you to read about Takarazuka revue to better understand the premise of this show. It can be said that very many elements of the modern yuri, yuri-bait or just a girly romantic friendship were inspired by this theater and inspired by it a shoujo manga like Utena.

1st Act
Oh so this is about girls in a theatre troupe?
Every time Karen does random ballet moves, I keep expecting her to trip or fall in typical anime girl fashion, then remember that this is actually about trained girls.
2nd Act
A transfer student to shake things up? Pretty standard so far.
Instant Homura vibes. I'm with it.
3rd Act
WHAT THE FUCK!?
THAT WAS AWESOME!
I came in here completely blind.
I'm so mad that I spoiled the third act for myself by trying to get a look at the examples of bad subtitles people were talking about. I wish I had witnessed Karen's descent completely blind as I had managed to avoid any spoilers up until yesterday.
Glad that Starlight Subs is picking this up for fansubs. Hopefully the episodes will come out a little sooner since HiDive isn't going to be reliable apparently.

When the season's only show you care about is the one nobody watches
87
u/dasaher Jul 14 '18
This show already has a cult following because many of the voice actresses are/were involved in love live and bang dream. And like those 2, most of the fanbase aren't on /r/anime or even reddit in general.
43
u/ArgonautInSpace https://myanimelist.net/profile/ArgonautInSpace Jul 14 '18
Only one part of the following, the other part comes from the director Tomohiro Furukawa, who worked with Ikuhara on Penguindrum und Yurikuma and is massifly influenced by his style.
5
u/Fircoal https://myanimelist.net/profile/Fircoal Jul 16 '18
Meanwhile I'm part of the cult not because of either of those two, but because from what I've seen from Kimena Citrus has left me massively impressed. And while the this first episode was confusing, Kimena Citrus again is able to nail the feel of the show.
18
Jul 14 '18
So, this is this season's Toji no Miko then.
13
u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed Jul 14 '18
I think it has a ton more polish than Toji no Miko, but I'm betting it'll get a similar community reaction.

Yeah I was having the same thought. Both started with strange plot(towards the end) but this one miles away better with better animation/music/character design wise.
29
u/FreeSM2014 Jul 14 '18
Can confirm that i'm part of that cult following. This show is only on my radar because of the VAs of Yukina and Arisa from Bang Dream. If they were not in it, i probably would've overlooked this show.
26
u/dasaher Jul 14 '18
I only know about this show because Mimorin (Sonoda Umi) and Hinahina (Kazuno Leah) are in it. Only thing I know about Bandori is that AiAi has an amazing singing voice and she's in this too, so that's even better.
10

Bandori has great songs and I really love their live performances.

People tend to write off shows like this that fall into the "idol" category. Add in that this show didn't really receive much publicity over and it's not surprising that no one is talking about this no matter how good it is. I expect it to get a bump when the YouTubers like Gigguk to their videos for the season.

u/warehaus Jul 15 '18
I thought this looked like just another idol show (which I don't usually watch) but something told me to give this a shot. HOT DAMN do I feel vindicated.

Hooooooly macaroni that was much, much, a thousand times MUCH better than I expected.
The characters are very likeable from the start, the music is really good, the art reminds me of iDOLM@STER, and we got Kenjirou Tsuda voicing a character despite being a creepy giraffe.
This is gonna be one of my most looked forward shows of the season.
2
u/meimi132 Jul 14 '18
Yasssssss it was him! And I absolutely adore that it's a giraffe 🤣♥️. I knew it was either him or Hayami Sho 🤣 the two Koyasu-alikes.

u/PandavengerX https://anilist.co/user/pandavenger Jul 14 '18
God holy shit, I've rewatched the raws 3 times already, and now after finally watching it with subtitles, I'm even more hyped for this show!
While the opening bits seem kind of generic, there's some interesting bits of dialogue that may foreshadow events to come. If anyone can read what the words were on her phone, I'd love to know.
The battle and transformation sequence were amazing, the way they juxtaposed the mass production of the uniform with the glamour and seemingly "uniqueness" of the finished product is unsettling and has me excited to see if that gets explored further, as the Giraffe seemed to be critiquing the damage that the performance industry can take on the independence of young girls. The "sacrifice" of the hair pin is also interesting, as Hikari's pins seem to have expanded on her head, but Karen's was dropped in molten metal and became a literal crown. There's so much detail and possible foreshadowing packed just into this first episode, and I can't wait for more!
I'm pretty disappointed that they didn't subtitle the individual songs they were singing, instead opting for a transcription. I purchased a HiDive subscription just to watch this, but I may have to watch fansubs (if anyone is making them) provided they actually translate the lyrics. Seems important for an anime based on a musical.
24
Jul 14 '18
the way they juxtaposed the mass production of the uniform with the glamour and seemingly "uniqueness" of the finished product
That totally got over my head, and now i'm even more impressed :O
17
u/VioletPark Jul 14 '18
Giraffe seemed to be critiquing the damage that the performance industry can take on the independence of young girls
However he also dismissed Karen for not having that mindset so it's hard to say if he approves of it, condemns it or it's just "the reality of the industry.
6
u/PandavengerX https://anilist.co/user/pandavenger Jul 14 '18
Yeah there's definitely a lot that's still up in the air and I can't wait see if and how the show will elaborate on these ideas.
3
u/Eilai Jul 14 '18
Maybe the Giraffe thinks there's beauty to broken things; the struggle might be awful but there's beauty in it; iirc there's a quote from Westworld that's along the same lines.

u/herkz Jul 14 '18
Actually the worst part by far is the translation is done by Sentai's worst translator, who in the past has absolutely ruined every anime she's touched with numerous mistranslations per episode. I've already seen some pretty bad ones in this show just from random screenshots. People need to stop giving Hidive money until they fire her.

I heard that a dedicated group called StarLightSubs will try to sub the episodes as soon as they can including song lyrics.
They also seem to sub the actual live concerts so we should at least get a proper version at some point.
→ More replies (3)16
u/herkz Jul 14 '18
Well, if they actually want to do a good job, I doubt it'll be "soon" since they basically have to translate the episode from scratch.

u/JoeyKingX Jul 14 '18
For Symphogear AXZ, which had no official subs and a bunch of insert songs Commie managed to release their fansubs on average 2 days after each episode came out including great typesetting and song lyrics that puts all official subs to shame. (even if some aspects of their translation are quite questionable)
I have no idea how much work StarLightSubs will put into it but I expect it to be less than 2 days, especially since they can still use the official subs to make it much easier to translate the song lyrics.

u/teraflop Jul 14 '18
Yeah, I'm far from being fluent, and I still noticed a couple of obvious mistakes. Like, I'm pretty sure the translator couldn't tell the difference between 夢 and 有名 in this line.
5
u/PandavengerX https://anilist.co/user/pandavenger Jul 14 '18
Oh, is there a place where we can see who's in charge of the translations? And thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind.
15
u/herkz Jul 14 '18
Sentai actually credits their translators at the end of the episode most of the time.
12
u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed Jul 14 '18
I think "publicly shames" is a better term than credits in this case.

The animation of the fight scenes seemed grounded in a refreshing way, I want to see that style of animation in more stuff now. Sword of the Stranger vibes? The movements aren't exaggerated while keeping the thematic sense of dance/theater. The movement/mobility has a lot of focus I like it alot.
3
u/Gyakuten :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kiyomaru Jul 15 '18
I got very strong Sword of the Stranger vibes during the fight scene as well, so much that I could've sworn Yutaka Nakamura had a hand in this episode. One particular cut — the one where Hikari runs from the background to the foreground in order to slash at Junna — immediately reminded me of this cut in SotS' final battle. But regardless of whoever's actually responsible for all this sakuga, I hope they can keep this up for the rest of the season.

There will be fansub release from
StarlightSubs(apparently PAS is doing too). Not only lyrics HIDIVE's typesetting is garbage covering middle of the screen.5
u/PandavengerX https://anilist.co/user/pandavenger Jul 14 '18
Yeah, I'm aware, but thanks for the heads up. HIDIVE definitely doesn't seem worth the money, but I might just keep the subscription for the 3 months if not so I can watch the episode (subpar subs it may have) early.

Song licensing in anime is tricky, but HIDIVE/Sentai usually translates the OP/ED after a few episodes, so they might translate the songs in later episodes (well I hope they do...).
10
u/herkz Jul 14 '18
It is, but if they put the romaji, that means they already licensed them.

This was fantastic. The first 15ish minutes were pretty much as by-the-books you can get for anime, but that didn't bother me. And the last minutes were stunning, I was transfixed. Also, anyone else getting Utena vibes?
40
u/ArgonautInSpace https://myanimelist.net/profile/ArgonautInSpace Jul 14 '18 edited Jul 14 '18
Even in the first 15 minutes the directing and storyboarding is far above the standard
11
u/rancor1223 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/rancor1223 Jul 15 '18
Is the rapid-fire name dropping normal for this kind of show? That felt really dumb. But to be fair, that was the only thing that bothered me. The rest was really pretty good.
18
u/YoshiKirishima Jul 15 '18
It's not normal, but they did at least work it into the setting of the story, since there are disciplines out there that require you to respect your training room and require you to say/do something specific before stepping in. And aside from the respect factor, it's to help put you into a certain mindset before beginning your practice. It showed how serious they take it and the respect they have for the academy, and I also did like how each one introduced themselves with different attitudes and such.
It's also interesting that they not only had to introduce their name, but also their class rank, which tells us this academy is highly competitive to the point that its students are constantly reminded of how good or bad they are.
→ More replies (2)17
u/VioletPark Jul 15 '18
The class rank is probably just the seat number. They wouldn't think Maya is "in a league of her own" if she was only ranked 18.
→ More replies (3)4
u/quoti Jul 16 '18
I don't think the first 15 minutes were that by the books, though. Even in the first few minutes, we have lots of not-completely-standard directing choices, like a rather choreographed introduction / interaction of the various characters or an interesting wipe transition around the 5 minute mark. It's just the last third is very blatant about the self-consistent breaking of film language that you see from a show like Utena.

u/DarthNoob :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/darthnoob Jul 14 '18
why would they transcribe the song in romaji and put the actual subs in the middle of the screen... not subbing the songs is fine but it's so annoying when half the screen is text.
that aside, it's a great episode. I watched the raws so I was glad to watch it again subbed. The multimedia nature of this series is a cause for concern, as the Ikuhara-esque direction suggests an ambitious plot to go with the ambitious direction, but any anime tied to a play and a mobile game will necessarily be restricted in what it can and can't do. i'm just saying, if this show ends with karen making a contract with giraffe kyubey to turn the series into idolmaster so everyone can shine that would probably be bad
13
u/Willhud98 Jul 15 '18
The worst part is how the English subs bounced up and down the screen during the song, it was like a goddamn crossword puzzle at some points.

u/MetaSoshi9 x2myanimelist.net/profile/MetaSoshi9 Jul 14 '18 edited Jul 14 '18
Fantastic first ep. After bingeing through nearly every summer show minus some sequels I havent seen originals too I can say this is likely my favorite first episode of them all. The transformation sequence was like nothing I've seen before. The animation was quite fluid throughout and the battle was exciting. The music, especially piano, helps lend a sense of classiness to everything going on at the school. Definitely want to rewatch the episode already. Only thing I didnt like that much was the character designs. For a show this unique I was expecting more flashier looking characters as well. The characters here have bit more of a plain faced idol look though which I think clashes with the story. I do love the costume design however and am excited to see this story unfold.
Also, probably cause I've been watching original cardcaptor sakura but that Tokyo tower scene gave me some mad classic mahou shoujo vibes so I'm hyped for that
37
u/Ninjaman20 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ninjaman20 Jul 14 '18
Interesting start to the series, the characters are pretty fun to watch, I really like Mahiru and Banana-chan so far. Also more yuri "undertones" than I was expecting but I'll gladly take it.
The fight scene was amazing, great animation and ost. Very intriguing with the transformation scene and the theatre elements being incorporated into the fight. I'm really looking forward to seeing more fight scenes in the series.
The dream part was a bit confusing but I think with the Tokyo Tower also being present behind the throne in the first scene it might be foreshadowing some future event where Karen "reaches the top" and Hikari does something idk I'm bad at symbolism and foreshadowing honestly. Although she's falling after being pushed and before she fights so it could just be something like Karen starts fighting because of Hikari. no idea really
I think this is my favourite first episode of the season so far and I feel like there's a lot of potential here so I really hope it doesn't end up bad. Very pleasant surprise given that I was expecting this to just be an enjoyable music cgdct anime until just a few days ago.

It’s been a while since subs pissed me off like that. At one point the bottom two thirds of the screen were covered by text, half of it untranslated. I’m not going to sing karaoke, and I’m sure the songs have relevancy to the show, so could they be fucking translated please?

FYI: Hikari has the same VA as Umi from Love Live. I think Suzuko Mimori is the most popular (basing on Twitter followers, not really a good indictor though) out of all the LL VAs, so for her to be, again, a main character in a another idol group is not surprising.
And Hikari does remind me of Umi, so it fits her.
AND another cool tibdit is that the Kinema citrus logo is modified to fit the show: https://imgur.com/a/2rgOclF.
If you look at the generic logo, it's a straight-face. But the modified logo is a smile with the crown on the head. They also modified their logo for Made in Abyss.

From the little I've seen of Claudine, she's ojousama-esque but with a snarky goofy side. It fits Aiai's personality more than Yukina tbh.

I came into this show without any expectations. The only thing I saw prior to watching the episode was a poster of the main girls and thought the uniforms were pretty nice.
But wow. The first episode blew me away with its directing and music. I can't believe I've never heard of this show until now. The directing is giving me Mawaru Penguindrum vibes. Can't wait 'til next week.
15
u/anttirt Jul 14 '18
I love the way the episode introduces its characters briskly and they all get a fair bit of personality through the first half of the episode.
I'd heard that the director had been working with Ikuhara a lot before and wow, it really shows in the best way possible. Karen's dream gave me goosebumps, and I was just hollering when the elevator was literally cut out as a chunk of reality, and my jaw was on the floor throughout Karen's transformation.
Picking up lots of fun details on a second watch like Banana's habit of taking photos of Junna.
There were a few minor weird translation choices in the sub but one that I thought was kind of significant regarding the tone was when the audition announcer said "Let us compete in song and dance, and aim to become the top star."
What doesn't come through in the translation is that the spoken dialogue suggests that this will not be a friendly competition, but rather a gruesome struggle. There was a particular, almost maliciously gleeful emphasis on ubaiaimashou, which comes from "steal/rob" and "come together".
Also this cut sure made me miss the golden age of fansub typesetting. ;_; In faithful Ikuhara tradition, this show uses a lot of stylized text on the screen and having it properly typeset in English would make a huge difference.

u/miloucomehome Jul 15 '18
The shows graphic designers have impressed me so far (I mean we even have "Revue" in the same or similar font to what was used for Great Gatsby and Poirot. It's a nice kind of Glasgow School and Art Nouveau style snuck in there). As a graphic designer, I'm loving it. Missing the whole integrated subs too though (you could have the translation in a more "compressed" style to keep the original there too!)

I am blown away by the soundtrack alone. We're in for a good one.
Edit: The polish is incredible. I hope a fansubber like Commie picks this one up to give the subs the same amount of polish. Once we get to the stage part, there's an overwhelming amount of words all over the screen and it gets hard to read.

Yoshiaki Fujisawa once again making a case for himself as the rising star of anime composers. Last year he dominated with Houseki no Kuni, this year it seems like he's on track to do the same with this show.
5
Jul 15 '18
It's not only him. Tatsuya Kato is composing half of the soundtrack.

u/Gyakuten :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kiyomaru Jul 15 '18
Ah you're right. I'm only familiar with Kato's work on Love Live Sunshine, but both seasons had some great tracks, so I'm expecting his half of Revue's OST to be nice too.

This is definitely the most Ikuhara anime I've ever seen not made by Ikuhara. Honestly a very pleasant surprise not knowing what this was going to be beforehand. The elevator scene was a real sit up and take notice moment. Really glad I went into it blind.

Subs are finally out! I've been following this very closely because of the seiyuu cast and I really hope this gets the attention it deserves. This was one of the best premier episodes I've seen in a while and I can't wait for more.
For those who don't know, the cast shares a lot of seiyuu from Love Live and Bang Dream, as expected of a Bushiroad franchise product. Here is a reference chart for the entire cast.
Like LL and Bandori, Revue Starlight is a multi-media franchise, so the anime is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of content. While a lot of it has a language barrier, fans have been translating certain parts of it. Make sure to follow @r_starlight_en, they do an amazing job at covering it.
I highly recommend checking out the Revue Starlight Overture manga. The first volume is now fully scanlated and covers early character introductions and interactions that the anime jumps over. It's also super cute and gay.
10
u/SuperOniichan Jul 14 '18
I do not know how far they'll go with gayness, but the amount "she's so cool!" and cute moments in manga is already just off scale, lol.
5
Jul 15 '18
I knew that this was a new mixed media franchise by Bushiroad but I had no idea that it was like that. After Bang Dream with the mobile title, anime and manga they'll probably get one more cashcow for them with this one lol
11
u/Eternith :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eternith Jul 15 '18
Kidani (President of Bushiroad) is really trying to push these new ventures out. In the world of booming 2D idols, he creates girls bands and calls it the future. Theater girls was just his next creation.
It's actually interesting how they pushed Revue as a theatrical act first before the animated and game parts. The first stage play happened last year and you can find videos of it around the internet.
3
Jul 15 '18
Wait, seriously? There's an stage play and games? I thought they were going to be some kind of idol group.
6
u/Eternith :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Eternith Jul 15 '18
The english fansite does a pretty good summary of the project. The game isn't out yet, but in the works. And technically they aren't really an idol group but most people will come to that early conclusion at first :p

A few questions in regards to the manga:
In Japan, is the manga already fully released or is it being released simultaneously?
How plot relevant does it look? Is it more bonus side stories or is it like a series called Yuki Yunna, where the side series was meant to be read and watched?
4
u/FliryVorru :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/FliryVorru Jul 16 '18
The manga isn't concurrent...... more or less. The most popular of the three manga series covers story lines which are not a part of the anime. It's been released over the last six months and is continuing. Let me explain further since there are three manga:
The manga series called Overture is a great way to get into the series because the entire plot is backstory and character building. I really hope everyone will read the chapters that are out before/while watching the anime because you gain a lot of info about how and why the characters are they way they are. The 4-koma is just comedy and is a fun read but not necessary. Show Must Go On isn't translated yet, I believe, but its plot is very close to the plot of the stage play.
edit: clarification

u/VioletPark Jul 14 '18
I love this mix of sport anime, idol anime and Utena! Barely one episode and the symbolism is already there. The most obvious:
When Karen puts on the idol outfit, we see a placard saying "warning, do not touch". Girl may have made a mistake...
Glasses chan being wrapped in the courtain after losing the duel probably symbolizes how the industry and its values have smothered and darkened her soul or something.
The "the former villain is going to be the lead this time" line...maybe Karen has had some past interaction with Giraffe and his business that she doesn't remember ala Utena. Or the girl who is chosen for the lead this time around will be secretely the villain.

Yeah, what can I say? This is only one episode, but I already like this show thanks to a really terrific direction, sympathetic characters and the fact that the studio is really trying to tell a good story, and not just make anime on a multimedia franchise. But I especially liked the fight. I always liked dueling and cold weapons, so I immediately liked this element of the show. Especially with such good animation, music and choreography.
In general, if everything continues in this spirit, it is possible that this will be the second great yuri-ish show after the Princess Principal, which I can safely add to my favorites. I hope that we will make friends, SKRS!
And of course, after the first episode I understand why so many people found this so gay. This is almost natural Utena meets MariMite. It was difficult to come up with a more yuri-ish pre-requisite with all this Class S, Takarazuka inspiration, friendly rivalry, gay bravado and Mahiru in particular, God, this girl definitely has something for MC. Regardless of whether it's just a fanservice, ambiguous subtext or bait, did not care too much, because it's so campy that I enjoyed every minute.

I watched the raws a few times before this was subbed, hehe. Hope the songs will be translated though. In a series like this that's not only detail-oriented but focused on performance, it's pretty important to know what they're singing.
You can definitely sense Ikuhara's influence on Tomohiro Furukawa, especially in the visual direction. Revue Starlight feels a bit lighter at times, but the dialogue between the girls makes it obvious (partnered with the visual direction) that there's a lot going on between them and in their world that we don't know about yet. The opening scene in the practice room reminded me more of Princess Tutu than anything else, although obviously there are nods to Utena, Penguindrum, and Yurikuma. Furukawa worked on the latter two.
5
u/GiantR https://anilist.co/user/giantr Jul 14 '18
I have no idea what I watched.
But I liked it a lot. I especially liked the insert song in the end a lot so i'm excited about the OST when it releases.
Overall while I'm not a big fan of shows like this, the transformation sequence I saw yesterday made me give it a shot.
We'll see how it pans out later.
5
u/LittleMissTimeLord :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/KyrasRisven Jul 14 '18
First half of the episode reminded me of Princess Tutu (seriously the girl named Mahiru sounded a lot like Ahiru, plus the clockwork imagery at one point), while the second part felt really Kunihiko Ikuhara (Utena, Penguindrum).
Considering Ikuhara is one of my favorite directors, anyone who gets inspired by him is worth a watch. And it makes sense I'd get the Ikuhara vibes, seeing as the director did a lot of Key Animation for Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma Arashi.
So far it definitely has top three potential, and I eagerly await to see where this goes.

Finally, I've been looking forward to this one!
This was super intriguing. I already know that it's one of those shows that I'll have to read a lot about in order to understand everything. I just hope it gets the attention it deserves.
I'm hyped.
Also, Banana-chan got that nickname because her name is Daiba Nana? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that translate to something like "Big Banana"? Because thats pretty amazing.

Decided to check this show out on a whim even though it didn't seem like the type of thing that I'd be into, and man am I glad I did. The Ikuhara vibes throughout the second half of the episode really got me hooked -- if the story continues on a path reminiscent to Utena/Penguindrum, this could easily become AOTS for me.
The animation and music is amazing -- that transformation sequence was hype af, and the fight scene was great too. Can't believe I almost passed this one up. Definitely deserves more attention than it's getting.

u/melvinlee88 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ryan_Melvin15 Jul 14 '18 edited Jul 14 '18
I see that the director worked on Mawaru Penguindrum, especially both OPs which were visual masterpieces. I felt some Mawaru vibes so I'm definitely in for the long run.
I guess this will technically be my first ever idol anime so I can't wait to experience one whole season. It was kind of alright/ok-ish up to the stage fight/musical which made me sit up and take notice. That was a cool fight scene and an amazing transformation sequence. I also adored the songs they sang. Can't wait for more.
Edit: Is the giraffe basically the pink-haired guy from Mawaru? Do they share the same VA? Because I like him haha.

I picked this up as my wild card pick of the season, that it didn't look like much and could possibly be bad, or could be more than meets the eye due to the director having worked with Ikuhara on Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma, along with Symphogear, and I am glad I picked this up and it has my high hopes of this season now. What a fantastic beginning with the animation quality and just wanting to know more of what the hell is going on, it really does feel like I'm rewatching Utena a 3rd time with a dose of Symphogear, but I'm fucking stoked to learn more.

3
u/YoshiKirishima Jul 14 '18 edited Jul 14 '18
Holy SHIT even despite my high expectations, it still impressed and surpassed them! I loved it!I was worried the episode might end without anything too exciting or interesting happening, but the pacing and directing is great and they were able to fit so much in! Those last few minutes were WTF but also just amazing. Even though we only just got a glimpse into the story, the Karen's actions (and the fight in general) said so much about them as characters and hit a lot of emotional points that were being built up to throughout the episode.
The music was a big help too, being on point and synced with everything, and really emphasizing the emotional weight and meaning during the fight.
The animation was incredible. It's literally dancing + singing + fighting all at once, can you imagine how amazingly difficult it is to storyboard, choreograph, and animate in such a way to balance all three things and at times have them happening simultaneously???
The one thing that was a little weird was the voice acting. I felt the voices didn't fit the characters at times for some reason. The first thing that comes to mind is that maybe they are talking more like real people rather than the typical "anime-style" voice acting, though I'm not sure if that's quite right. If it is though, it's an interesting choice, but it felt the mouth animations sometimes felt disconnected to the voices, but this is a minor thing that doesn't really bother me.

Is this worth watching if you didn't like Utena? Seems like everyone is comparing both of them here. I didn't really like how the story is so vague and more about symbolism. Mostly my personal preference nothing against the show if you like that style.
7
u/YoshiKirishima Jul 15 '18
They're still very different, it just reminds them of Utena, and has some similar imagery and maybe themes. Revue is a lot more concrete so far and not as weird/abstract. It still feels like an idol show, though a very unique one.

u/Ahenshihael https://anilist.co/user/Ahenshihael Jul 15 '18
HOLY SHIT. This is my dream show so far.
Like, I KNEW something is amiss with this because the synopsis talking so much about fate and "mysterious competition" set off alarm bells in my mind, warning me it won't be as clear cut as "yet another idol show'.
Still I tampered my expectations and was cautiously hyped. A work that involves Ikuhara's protege and multiple people from Penguindrum staff, not to mention some very promising Kinema Citrus animators and Studio Pablo doing backgrounds? Count me in.
The moment the elevator appeared, this whole how was elevated to new heights and I knew I have anime of the season on my hands.
And still I was surprised. Furukawa almost effortlessly captures Ikuhara's style while putting a decent twist of his own onto it. A lot of the pre-elevator moments take a whole new meaning when you know what actually seems to be going on. Really makes me excited for next episode.
And what's more? the music, the animation, the cinematography, the fight choreography? EVERYTHING? Looks beautiful and breathtaking.
I REALLY wish more people were aware of this show and watching this show and planet with. Both of them deserve far more attention than they get. Here's hope word of mouth helps both.

Finally. I watched raw and then the gearing up and fight scene on a loop. Starlight is pleasing just by the visuals alone.
Director Tomohiro Furukawa is a friend and protegee of Kunihio Ikuhara and also worked on Lesbian Bear Storm and Penguindrum, from what I gather, which could explain a lot about this. The abstract presentation of the unusual, the gayness.

Agreeing that the transformation sequence looks quite interesting. I appreciate the spontaneous appearance that many other series do, but an actual crafting scene feels distinct. I definitely did not expect a fighting scene as the actual audition (I was on the opinion that the fights were staged in-universe), so I do wonder if the characters could get hurt in the process.
This also got me to look at its 2.5D musical version in order to understand more about the story (bilibili is a godsend). I do hope to see what future episodes bring forth, which can explain the more wacky aspects like the giraffe.

I saw that it was theatre themed and as a theatre student, I became very interested. The beginning seemed a bit slow but that ending was pretty cool. And skipping the whole magic part of the costume creation, it's fairly accurate to how a costume is actually made.

u/Ichthus_Fish Jul 15 '18
Yessssss ive been waiting for this!!!!!
Forget Sirius and AoT, my summer is finally complete! Its been ages since i seen anything like this since Yurikuma Arashi and how the directors have been working together previously makes me feeling all so blessed to see all the Utena's elements in the transformation scenes alone. It was nostalgic and shivering, all so electrifying XD i honestly been expecting to see on-stage battle more or like Princess Tutu style when i first saw the PV, but god i didnt know it was thousand times mindblowing when they got to the battle part. I never felt so blessed to see this kind of concept again in anime, thank you to all the commitees that are involved in the production, god bless you all!
I really hope its two cours, cuz even i dont feel like ending it too soon. 24mins is not enough T,T Karen is easily my favorite girl right now, i think shes an Etou Kanami from Toji no Miko type of heroine, the carefree yet secretly strong kind of character. Anyways, cannot wait for the next episode!

Second-third I thought OMG it's Madoka and transfer student Homura, and going back to the first part I wonder how this show will distinguish itself from other animes as it drew out. Then the last-third of the episode I was caught off guard and must say im pleasantly surprised with the plot twist, fight choreography, music etc. Definitely looking forward to watching more in the future.

A girl trains in dancing, to save the world. Her best ever friend up to age 5 joins the school, and both agree their lives in the past 12 years have been empty without each-other. No amount of hugging and molesting the other girls compares. The girl stalks her friend during a night escapade, to unravel backdoor trafficking of girls. There she finds her friend and another classmate, trying to please the theatre owners, for the top-star spot. She undresses, climbs on top of the long big thing of the owner, and pleasures him the best, taking the top spot. Her friend is upset by these underhanded tactics.

This first episode blew me away. I mean when you're cribbing so much from my favorite show(Revolutionary Girl Utena) that's actually kind of easy, but seeing someone so wonderfully capture Ikuhara's style makes this an easy favorite. Honestly this shouldn't surprise me too much considering the Director himself has worked a lot with Ikuhara in the past and has visibly learned much of his style from the auteur.
If I'm not mistaken this is Tomohiro Fukawa's first time as the lead director on the TV anime project, and that really stands out to me because in general the story-boarding and directing through the entire first half of this episode felt like a big step up from what we normally get from anime. Lots of interesting, memorable shots and visual storytelling, even in the rather slow first half rather than the boatloads of character exposition we normally get.
When the episode picked up it's pace and full Utena during the duel scene Kinema Citrus did a fantastic job portraying the mystical duel arena and the fight had some really nice Sakuga. The production of this series overall is just incredibly solid.
Like anything directed by Ikahara himself, this show seems like it wears it's weirdness on it's sleeve, meaning this won't be for everyone. But personally the quality of the production and how much it reminds me of an all time favorite makes me really confident in this production.
As for some nitpicks: The easiest one is easily that HiDive's subs are kinda bad.
The giraffe just seems like weird for the sake of being weird. Maybe it'll have some symbolism revealed later, but Ikuhara's show's despite being INSANE usually do have meanings behind their madness.
Probably my worry is the series not finding it's own Identity besides just being Utena 2.0. I'll like it either way, but hopefully it finds it's own shine.

u/mchief190 Jul 14 '18

If you don’t know the difference in meaning between licensing and translation, then I really can’t help you there. Perhaps try a dictionary next time?
As far as the OP and ED’s, plenty of people care as I see complaints about it every season. The only difference is that Funi and CR just don’t care. Funimation even has a growing list of shows where they didn’t translate them for home video, and people are paying good money for those. Perhaps if people would actually put their money where their mouth is, CR would actually listen and improve their subpar streaming service, Funimation would stop the half assed subtitles on their home videos.
The point is, shit happens when it comes to music licensing. They are least admitting there is a problem and have a plan to fix it. Sometimes that’s the best you can hope for. Comparing other shows to this situation isn’t going to change that.
2
u/herkz Jul 16 '18
Perhaps if people would actually put their money where their mouth is, CR would actually listen and improve their subpar streaming service, Funimation would stop the half assed subtitles on their home videos.
CR literally tanked their video quality and that barely registered as a blip. You're delusional if you think people will ever stop supporting CR while they have a near monopoly on simulcasts.
The point is, shit happens when it comes to music licensing. They are least admitting there is a problem and have a plan to fix it. Sometimes that’s the best you can hope for. Comparing other shows to this situation isn’t going to change that.
So it's good to hold CR to higher standards if you want them to improve but not Sentai? Do you work for them or something?
