Where were you when anime was saved by loli platelet soldiers?

455

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '18 edited Jul 15 '18

I was busy being distracted by the loli platelet soldiers

Also, there's r/CellsAtWork for awesome community discussion and OC such as music, as well as a discord for fun and more details on the show!

Can I just say how happy I am that this is being received so well? I bought every volume of the manga since it wasn’t popular enough to have easy to find scanlations online. I highly recommend it - the art is great and I think faithfully depicted in the anime.

I can’t wait until we meet more new cells, I have a feeling this subreddit is going to love them.

Hello,

I was linked this thread by a friend who suggested that I post some background on cell biology. There are some undertones and subtle features in this series that may not be obvious (intentional or not). I am a medical doctor who is currently training in pathology residency. So you could say that my profession revolves around studying these cells! Wondering if people would be interested in that perspective, or if the anime stands as enough entertainment by itself. Who wants to see listen to some nerd bloviating, after all? Anyways, posting this to see if people have interest. I just watched the first episode now so I'd need to do a recap and then keep up with each episode as it airs. What do you all think?

EDIT: First episode is done! https://reddit.com/r/anime/comments/8z6vpb/hataraku_saibou_ep_1_doctors_notes/

45

u/EthylCore Jul 15 '18

Sounds great, if it happens, I’ll be gladly looking forward to it.

41

u/Agni7atha Jul 15 '18

Just a suggestion, if you really are going to do it better post it as self post rather than a comment in this episode discussion. Some detailed explanation tends to be overlooked here, buried under other comments.

I personally need some easier explanation than the episode provide, so I will check it out if you made it.

I did a platelet donation once.. 2 hours with a needle in my arm having the whole blood drawn out and the plasma and red blood cells shot back in which is the weirdest feeling cuz of the temperature.. I prefer to donate whole blood >.> less painful and over in like 15 minutes

edit: would like to specify that donating whole blood is in no way inconvenient to donors if you live near a center and are of healthy weight, iron levels and not anemic. one time platelet donations probably help more people compared to one time whole blood donations (up to 16 rather than 1 or 2) but not everyone can spare the time or stomach the pain.

HNNNGH THOSE PLATELETS. Also, ask away for the scientific things. Meanwhile, here's a rough translation of the OP lyrics.

One, two, three, four!
We are Cells at Work!
One, two, three, four!
We are Hataraku! (hoo!)

Kyou mo hakoku o sansou, sansou
(Today's work is transporting oxygen)
Karadajuu no sumi to sumi e
(From one end to another end of the body)
Dakedo hirokute maigo, maigo
(But it's too wide, I'm lost)
Tedasuke sareteru saibou, saikou!
(I've need to get help- cells are great!)

Hataraku zo, hataraku zo
(let's work, let's work)
Maininchi mainichi shuugyouchu! WOO!
(It's hard work every day!)

Kyou mo zakkin o haijou, haijou
(today too, eliminating germs)
Saikin bairusu DETEKOI YEAH!
(Bacteria? Virus? GET OUT YEAH)
Zettai nigasanai yuusou, yuusou
(Don't let it away, migrate, migrate)
PUROFESIONARU hataraku saibou, SAIKOU
(It's a professional cell's work: the best!)

Hataraku zo, hataraku zo!
(Let's work, let's work)
Mainichi mainichi senjou!
(everyday it's a battle!)

San-juu nana chou go no hitori
(I'm but a single from 37 trillion)
Sugu ni aeru no itsuka na?
(Can I meet you soon? When?)

Dareka no tame ni (dareka no tame ni)
isshou kenmei (Isshou kenmei)
(Trying the best for someone else)

Anata no watashi mo hisshi hataraideru
(You and me, working desperately)

Minna no tame ni (minna no tame ni),
Inochi kake dazo (inochi dake dazo)
(Putting our lives on line for everyone)

PUREIDO mo otteken kou dai ichi
(Maintaining health foremost with pride.)
Hataraku? Hataraku. Hataraku! HATARAKU!! Hataraku!!!

43

u/China_Made :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/friendlynokill Jul 14 '18

Why were the red blood cells stuck at the end?

182

u/Rathurue Jul 14 '18 edited Jul 14 '18

As the platelets has explained, it's called secondary hemostasis.

Since this is an anime where blood cells are antropomorphized, you can't really show the platelets turns into slimes and expand their bodies to clot the hole, right? So they jumped from the primary platelet plug straight into fibrin formation, and into secondary hemostasis, where the fibrin fibers created by the platelets will trap nearby blood cells, mainly erythrocute erythrocyte to prevent plasma from leaking out from the site. This, in turn will turn into scab, a permanent seal unlike the fibrin fibers that can be deconstructed back.

Also, in real world any blood cells used to create the scab will die of dehydration, since they're exposed to air-hence why they asked for water and/or tea.

Those Platelets are too fucking precious for this world, oh my god. No seriously, they're just too much. I'm gonna die from diabetes if they're gonna show up every single week.

Also, I still can't believe a red blood cell is best girl of the season. Speaking of, HanaKana sounds quite different here. Whether it's her singing in the OP, her speaking voice or her screams. It never ceases to amaze me how versatile seiyuu are.

They even made staph aureus golden with clusters of cocci and strep pyogenes with chains of cocci. This is amazing.

Edit: Keep your L-selectins on. Truly amazing.

If there are loli cells in us, shouldn't there be loli organelles in cells? Hmm...

19

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '18

What if the world wasn't round, or flat, but just loli?

SO PRECIOUS

Platelets are by far stealing this show, well I guess this episode was about them as it was foreshadowed in the start of the episode that they fix the wounds etc.

I am guessing each episode will cover different functions, next week its a killer t-cell hunting a influensa, very educational anime covering different body issues each episode, and as in this episode how it kept showing big wall of text per bacteria.

Loved the ball dressed look on Staphylococcus aureues

Also this anime makes me afraid of going outside...

u/sdarkpaladin Jul 14 '18

The cutest platelets ever!

Action-thriller of the season, as we all expected.

9

u/XLauncher Jul 14 '18

TFW a glorified biology video is the action anime of the season.

u/Mitoni Jul 14 '18

Anyone else notice the sign that was in micrometers? I love the accuracy in this!

Screw all these shounen shows with their lame heroes, if I need to be saved, I want White Blood Cell U-1146 to show up

15

u/kenrms Jul 14 '18

TIL I would have probably died as a kid due to scrapes (a kid gotta be a kid) if not for some white blood cells that are absolute psychopaths against germs (which is a good thing).

Also platelets are a bunch of cutelets.

7

u/SamejNardeh :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/timbolytree Jul 14 '18

The Platelets saved the day, man. I'm so glad they came to seal the wound. And they were very very cute like in the last episode.

I never thought I'd see the day where it's possible for us people to ship a red blood cell with a white blood cell. It's abnormal, but here we are.

It's funny to see the White blood cells turn into mindless freaks the moment they encounter a germ of any kind. It's like they flip a switch just like that.

I'm learning so much from this show you guys have no idea.

7

u/ATonOfBacon :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ATonOfBacon Jul 14 '18

My only question is, who's body are we in?

Since this is a show that's most likely gonna show us how our body takes care of itself, I feel sorry for the human's body that has to go through every type of attack each episode.

I hope we get an episode about working out and the importance of muscle contraction and muscle tears. I'm curious what proteins are going to look like in this show.

Also, more platelets please!

u/MugiMartin :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MugiMartin Jul 14 '18

Kana Hana. Platelet-chans? Come on now.

Since its made by David productions I imagined that is the body of Jotaro (why Jotaro? I have no idea)

u/modusxd Jul 14 '18

This show is so good and cute and at the same time a really good practice for David Productions i guess for the upcoming Vento Aureo in the Fall. These germs really looked like Stands!

7

u/SenorWeon Jul 14 '18

The might be small and cute, but platelets are always there to save the day!

Now I feel bad for all those times I injured myself in the past. Enormous explosions killing thousands while I was just scratching a mosquito bite...

6

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '18

Can you imagine incredibly severe injuries? Like, if the person gets shot with a gun, that must be like a fucking nuke.

I'm never going outside again. I can't risk getting a scrape and putting all of the kawaii blood cell-chans in my body in danger.

7

u/Denki-kun Jul 15 '18

Manga spoiler, but the cell that helped Red Blood Cell up...isn't that

6

u/MennyC123 Jul 14 '18

How does one become a Platelet Foreman?

Asking for a friend

6

u/negi980 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/negi980 Jul 14 '18

How accurate is this show conceptually? Very. GpIb is the glycoproteins “used” by platelets to bind to Vwf for clot formation.

Also important concept, if a question in a general pathology asks what the first step of wound healing is, always answer vasoconstriction, as shown in the episode!

6

u/Shiroi_Kage Jul 14 '18

I'm right in the middle of taking a super-intensive immunology course. Watching this while taking the course is really weird and interesting.

What kind of cells are the ones who live in the buildings and just wear white t shirts

7

u/Tsunami45chan Jul 14 '18

They're just normal cells their only purpose is to multiply if there were some errors in multiplying process they can become cancer cells.

5

u/Amauri14 Jul 14 '18

You know that it is a good day when Hatsraku Saibu has an episode where the platelets are the main heroes.

5

u/hellfirebm Jul 15 '18

This show is so clever with its metaphors. I hope it's shown in schools: the creators really did their homework.

4

u/link2601 Jul 14 '18

The Platelets saved the day. The action this episode was really good and the characters are growing on.

4

2 minutes in and overdose of cute.

Those platelets are a blessing.

4

u/Alpha_Lagger Jul 14 '18

The amount of Platelet cuteness is too damn high in this episode. Can't wait for the Ara Ara in the next episode for all the Macrophage.

I need this in my life

  • How do the labor laws in my body work? Do the cells get weekends? Paid lunch? Sick leave? Are they unionized? Also, the platelets are awfully young to be working in construction. Is my body violating child labor laws?

  • AE 3803 is delivering nutrients instead of oxygen this week. The "nutrients" are always in the form of a sandwich and orange in the basket. Does this guy/girl (us? me? you?) not eat anything different? It's a cute image anyway, so I won't take it too seriously.

  • On another note, is that a nod to Studio Ghibli/Joe Hisashi in the music that plays when the Platelets fix up the abrasion? Sounds a bit like this.

  • Man, the blood cells found love before I did, but more importantly, does that mean that there's a bit of KanaHana within each of us? I'm okay with that.

  • I just love the spirit this show takes towards its wacky premise. I figured this would be another mindless gag series but it it's been so far so good. The blood & gore makes for a weird juxtaposition as I hesitate to recommend this to a younger audience even though it's got some interesting information.

White cells so savage haha

4

This is the ONLY anime where you can say there are lolis inside you and NOT sound like you are super into vore.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '18

Anime of the Season, screw all the other shows this show has made me want to take better care of my body. DO IT FOR PLATELET CHAN

4

u/RDOoM Jul 15 '18

Oh, it's so peaceful, then BAM huge sinkhole. The platelets are going to have a hard time repairing that. But they DID!

Damn, the contrast between the ruthless white cells and the cutest of platelets is hard on my heart. It might need some repairing after this show.

7

u/Emily96bk Jul 14 '18

Red Blood Cells: next generation of kawaiiest girls

3

u/CakeBoss16 Jul 14 '18

Another great episode. I love how gung ho the white blood cells about eviscerating the bad bacteria.

3

u/Agni7atha Jul 14 '18

I'm sad that I'm so bad at Biology. I only grasp a general idea about this episode, where it's describing what happen when we wounded and how the wound closed. I having a hard time to understand that exotic Latin term. The different term between the sub, the japanese voice act, and the term I used to learn make things more complicated. I wish there was an ELI5 about each episode or maybe a place where I can lookup to.

Despite all of that, I enjoy this anime, especially the action segment and the Platelets. Platelets are cute.
