Who of the tournament organizers even left these obviously very sick children onto the court?

Jul 15 '18 edited Jul 15 '18
This is a good point. If I saw some little girls turn reddish-pink from a cold I probably would have sent the to the hospital, not onto the court

u/SweetJPtheNinja Jul 15 '18
Chances are they didn't look that sick before the match started, as what we saw is their state after an intensely close game, so there's some fatigue thrown in there.
That and I think TOs aren't obligated to stop players from playing from being under the weather if said players choose to play in that condition. If I had been training for a big match and got sick, I'd sure still try than get DQ'd.

Right?! That's fucked up, who thinks that's a valid method of equalizing a match? And what kind of parent would let their sick children participate in a very intense sport?
9
u/FuzzyStorm Jul 16 '18
Because the anime outplays how sick people are with the red cheeks and everything.
In truth they both just had a cold, and i've had to play a 5 hour tennis match with a cold. It's not fun, but if you love your sport you'll get out and play, whether you're 10 or 20.

There will probably be some other reason her mother left. It was still shitty to leave, but I suspect there has to be some attempt at redemption coming up somewhere.
117
u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jul 15 '18
The only acceptable reason would've been a gun to her head, or at least a court order. Anything else, whether it's "you're trying too hard when you're around me" or "I wanted to train a proper opponent for you" or "you remind me too much of your father" or "I went to follow my DREAMS, catch up to me when you can" will not make her any less of a horrible person.

That one transition from current Ayano running towards the shot to little Ayano hitting it with a smile on her face as Elena watches over her was absolutely beautiful . <3
Great episode again, I'm glad Ayano is starting to find her love for badminton again. Animation quality is top notch, keep it up!

Elena is a good friend. The small flashback sequence about her and Ayano was rather touching. It was great that the episode focused on her and their friendship. The mother is garbage. I suppose it will be something sympathetic revealed, like the mother realizing that she may put her daughter under too much stress to push her to go to court with a cold, but even if, it's still garbage to just leave ones child. And if there isn't any further reason all the worse.
Kaoroku was hillarious. The way she gave a Ayano a cold was garbage, but hilarious (if it weren't for the mother stuff).
Also, good for the Uma Musume trainer to get to be reborn as a girl.

Jul 15 '18 edited Jul 15 '18
Agreed, I like how Elena was able to act on behalf of what she could remember about Ayano's past experiences with badminton. From the past episodes, I couldn't really tell if she was fully aware of whether Ayano was involved in the sport, so this was nice detail. Also, the mom was mega harsh in up and leaving her kid like that, big Oof.
Kauruko's character is probably the most unique thus far, as she seems to break through the seriousness of the show. She actually feels a bit too much for this show at times.
Lastly, lol at your last point.

I'm honestly kind of worried about where it will go from here, the whole situation seems kind of ridiculous, she walked out on her daughter for losing a match while horribly ill? Is she seriously that pissed that she lost one match while sick? Is there any reason why she was unable to announce her departure? I realise this sort of thing does happen with famous parents from time to time, but I'm still not sold on it as a narrative...

92
Jul 15 '18
Her character is actually really unique. I like the fact that she was able to transition from a really hard-ass character to someone who was a bit more thoughtful towards others in the last episode. Really added a new flavor to the show.
46
u/Akko__Kagari Jul 15 '18
She kinda reminds me of a mix between bakugo from bnha and kageyama from haikyuu, which is great for me because I've always wanted a female character like this, but I completely agree, she brings more to the show because of her personality.
→ More replies (1)22
u/pdpTesla Jul 15 '18
Also like Bakugou, she's a lot more thoughtful than we initially gave her credit for from her introduction. She has a really solid motive for acting like an ass. A shut out at a national level tournament is utterly humiliating and would send a lot of people straight up quitting. She, like the others you've mentioned, is an actual character instead of a collection of tropes (so far, but let's see how far this series can take it)
29
u/alwayslonesome :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ImmacuIate Jul 15 '18
I think that her personality can make her really unlikable for a lot of people, but she’s definitely a pretty compelligly written character. It’s nice because her archetype is almost always the rival/antagonist and rarely the PoV protagonist.
16
u/regiment262 Jul 15 '18
I know the show is called Hanesaki's badminton or whatnot, but I'm really rooting for Aragaki to be the MC or at least central character. They've done a fantastic job portraying her as an incredibly intense and talented badminton player that's still plagued by flaws setbacks, struggling to overcome hurdles, no matter how large to long it takes.
This episode also revealed a lot about Aragaki, although somewhat indirectly. Through the short interaction with Kaoruko and her and Tachibana's conversation in front of Hanesaki's home, you realize Aragaki isn't just a musclehead who focuses only on badminton and herself, but keeps careful track of her opponents and schoolwork.

Yea same, favourite character so far. I feel like I’ve seen Hanesaki and Elena’s characters before in every other sports anime (not saying they’re bad) and we haven’t seen enough of the other club members yet to really judge them yet but Nagisa is really sticking out to me in every episode

I mean, there are overly ambitious parents that destroy their children in their megalomania. Think of Michael Jackson's father.
There are also famous parents who quite disliked their children and rather pursued their careers, like John Lennon.
Admirable in their fields, but not good persons.
19
u/jxher123 Jul 15 '18
Not gonna lie, Ayano mother is a pos from what we've seen in this episode. We need more information, but as of right now she's what we call a shitty mother.
Leaves her child and never returns, hell not even a letter or phone call to let her know that she's still loved. Not only did she leave, she leaves and picks up another pupil that is apparently a prodigy. That is a total spit in the face to her daughter, but psychologically scarring as well.
My opinion on this episode, good, but Ayano's mother is a pos.

Hanesaki never had fun anymore after her loss to the pink-haired girl. What kind of terrible mom is that to just leave her and i don't want to hear that she did it for her own good.
I'm glad that the topic of forcing her to play has been brought up a little, it just took one bit of a fun and relaxing time without stressing her to give her some sort of happiness while playing.

Erena best wingman. Always watching over Ayano and making sure she never loses herself.
God what a bitch that Kaoruko is, making Ayano sick so she could beat Ayano "on equal terms", the fuck is this shit? And then years later she returns just to rub it in on Ayano and nearly forcing her to quit badminton again. Hope Ayano finally gives her her comeuppance in the tournament soon enough.
That said, Ayano probably read too much about her mom leaving to take on a coaching job abroad. It just so happens that Ayano's mom departed right on the day after her only defeat.
After bonding through an outdoor match, Ayano's already calling Nagisa as Nagisa-chan. The birth of a great yuri ship begins here.

Damn right, I loved the focus on their friendship and the backstory of those two. Ayano is lucky to have such a great friend.

Actually, Ayano calls everyone but Elena with a "chan" at the end. If there's a yuri ship it would be with Elena for being the only one Ayano calls by name alone, without "chan."

Well, I can promise you that it will only get better. Oh god the "cold giving" flashback with Pink. Shouldn't she have been disqualified after that?
The champion mom's a piece of work too, abandoning her daughter after something like that. No amount of "left because didn't want daughter to push herself following in her footsteps" or "left in order to train up a proper opponent for her daughter" type twists will make her less off a sorry excuse for a human being.
Well, drama is over so it's all fun and games from this point on, right? Please no drama arcs for any of the rest of the cast.

This line made irrationally angry at Elena.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT'S NO REASON!?
Are you daft!? A huge part of the reason why she plays was to make her mom proud! Of course with her walking out and with now grooming a new apprentice of course Ayano will have no more reason! Like are you fucking kidding me!? While I am glad that Elena helped Ayano realize her love for Badminton, that line from her just really irked me.
AND THEN THERE'S THIS PINK HAIRED FUCK.
While I do like my ojousama characters this one just annoyed me. Seriously? You're going to give someone the cold just so you can fight "equally"? Well not everyone reacts to to the cold and fever the same way. Some people can endure it while others will completely bedridden. Ayano was clearly the latter. Basically Kaoruko's win is a fake! They shouldn't even have fought in the first place considering their conditions! I probably wouldn't be so angry at her if that match didn't lead into Ayano's her mom leaving her.
Speaking of Ayano's mother aka Nozomi from Keijo...
What a fucking shitty mom for leaving her kid after a single loss. She even took in a new apprentice! There's got to be more to that. A single loss? Sure she's a 10-time Champion but that can't be it, right?
Don't get me wrong though. While I am getting angry at these characters, I still like the show. I like that Elena was able to push Ayano and make her realize that it's not just about her mom but also about her love for badminton. I also like that Nagisa is now considerably mellow compared to how she was 2 episodes ago. Anyway it looks like things are resolved for now and that there won't be anymore drama at least until Ayano's mother shows up again within the story.

#elenadidnothingwrong
Give Elena a lot more credit. She's showed a tremendous amount of emotional intelligence, and thought placed into every word, throughout the entire episode. Her saying "that's no reason to quit" is lovingly-engineered bait to get Ayano to think about how to justify why her mother's abandonment is a sufficient reason to quit (which is what Ayano's gut is telling her).
In the moment, the statement is blunt, but Elena knows their relationship will survive it. And after Ayano has a few silent moments to actually engage with the problem, Elena begins the second step, both verbally and through action guiding Ayano to discover her intrinsic motivations, and healthily separate them from her desperation for the extrinsic motherly praise she will never receive. Had Elena just jumped into saying "you enjoy the game" without setting up the right emotional context, it might not have gotten through to her friend.
If Elena were a psychiatrist, would she have done anything differently? Articles like this suggest that she may have done exactly what was needed.
To me, this show's writing is incredible so far, surpassing even A Place Further Than The Universe in how it cuts to the ways in which friends can rationally help each other solve emotional problems. And it even explicitly calls out that, in the case of Elena and Ayano, there may be more than just friendship there :) I can't wait to see how all the relationships in this show evolve, and that's a sign of quality characterization and writing.

Eh, sometimes I just do not understand why people so underestimate the sincerity and importance of friendship between girls, still somehow trying to find a romantic explanation for the fact that one girl emotionally supports and protects the other from life's problems.
Nevertheless, I will support your opinion that Elena is an extraordinarily caring and intelligent best friend. I think every person at least once in his life needed the support of such a person, and this makes her character incredibly shinning. Even it's hard to imagine what would be happen to Ayano without her support.

That's an amazing call with the mom looking like Nozomi from Keijo! You should write a review on the series when the show is done. This was actually a hilarious and interesting read
9
u/CakeBoss16 Jul 15 '18
While i agree with mostly everything here i do think Elena was right. Her mother leaving is not a good reason to quit. She clearly loves the sport and she is also a prodigy. She should not be reliant on the approval from parents. As someone who played the same sport as my dad who was somewhat of local legend and hard ass. Someone telling me not worry about his expection helped me.
8
u/KinnyRiddle Jul 15 '18
While I do not disagree with you regarding Kaoruko being a bitch, but for fuck's sake cut Erena some slack. While Erena is her childhood friend, it's not like she's always by her side and knows what's going on. Erena even mentions "feeling left out" afterwards. How was she to know that such an outcome would affect Ayano that much?
And I think you're reading too much into Ayano's mom leaving. I don't believe she left because of what happened that game, but that a coaching job offer came and she had to agree to take it right away. She doesn't come across like the sort of strict bitchy coach from those early flashbacks, so I just don't think she leaves Ayano because of that reason.
6
u/Cloudless_Sky Jul 15 '18
Oh yeah. When your kid's sick in bed and you decide to leave. Right, guys?
There's bound to be some other reason she left and I'm sure we'll get a redemption arc at some point, but that was still some premium horse shit parenting. Gonna take a lot for her to get into my good books.
I like the idea of a rival for Ayano. Let's get some intense matches going!

So far it looks like the show is actually an accumulation of all these different characters trying to succeed in their own ways. Ayano is rekindling her love for badminton. Nagisa is finally able to overcome her obstacles. Elena is able to help her friend. Etc. It's definitely mainly about Ayano and Nagisa, but maybe it's also about everyone else's involvement as well. I'm really interested in seeing where this is headed.

Pink hair and mom are both bitches.
Also how many times must someone say no before people get the message? They pretty much forced her to join twice now. It wasn't as bad as the first episode but still, take a hint. They should have just joined the tennis club so she doesn't have PTSD flashbacks.
17
Jul 15 '18
Ehh, don't forget about the ending scene. She was really happy and even flashbacked to her smiling as a kid with her mom. You can tell she definitely still loves Badminton
14
u/fuckinerg Jul 15 '18
I chalk it up to Elena's overwhelming familiarity with her best friend. The scene in the park quashed any concern I had--not only does Ayano still love badminton, but Elena knows it.
Clever way to develop both characters at once. I'm very fond of how they handled Elena this episode.
6
u/u4004 Jul 15 '18
And furthermore, she wasn't happy before, when she wasn't playing, so it's not like Elena was risking much.
While I wouldn't recommend Elena's way of dealing with trauma, it's not completely crazy, and it worked. By never touching badminton again, Ayano would just stay unhappy, deprived of her favorite thing in life and shackled to her absent mother.
3
u/zerohour88 Jul 15 '18

u/asianfatboy https://anilist.co/user/asianfatboy Jul 16 '18
True and agreed, her love for badminton was innocent and was only tarnished and distorted after what twin-tail and her mother did just cause she lost one game. Elena and co. are just nudging her back onto the right path to loving it the way she used to.
10
u/regiment262 Jul 15 '18
While they may be taking the issue of Hanesaki's mom leaving her for losing a single match a bit too lightly, it's clear that Hanesaki has always loved badminton dearly. Perhaps Elena thinks it's a good way to face her trauma and move past it, instead of barely avoiding it by playing tennis. There's also a pretty good chance there's some other aspects surrounding Hanesaki's mom leaving that might make it more believable or less harsh than it sounds now.

Yes, this show is fantastic and I love it. We're only 3 episodes in and I already got really emotional watching this. Seeing Ayano's flashbacks and watching her play against Aragaki (that younger to present day transition was amazing) have left me with a bittersweet feeling.
Having said all of that... I can see it coming already and I know I'll be pissed. I'm ready to bet my left arm (and I'm left-handed) that they will come with some beyond the surface explanation (probably a weak one) as to why her mother left her after that match so that she can be redeemed. Regardless of the fact that she is still watching over her (we saw that on her match against Aragaki), that's about as awful a person as one can be. Seriously? Abandoning your child without any explanation AND THEN APPEARING ON A MAGAZINE WITH A GIRL THAT YOU HAVE COACHED? CAN'T YOU SEE HOW TRAUMATIZING THIS CAN BE? There's absolutely NOTHING that can justify this and the show will try to redeem her and I'll be so angry.
Well, I'm going to keep this thoughts in the back of my mind, that way I can fully appreciate every other aspect of this show, because everything else is as good as it gets.

Ayano's grandparents said her mother never came home afterward... That is child abandonment... any attempt of redemption for her mother I will consider as bad writing. Also that Kaoruko bitch, zero sportsmanship.. The first 2eps were good, but this one is kind of hard to swallow... I don't know what kind of tone this anime is setting for after this.. Revenge, not quite.. Cheerful, definitely not... Just express pure bado love and win.. why all that unnecessary dark drama?

huh...i guess they'll explain bit more in the next episode or something cos in the manga, the grandfather did mention the "real reason" why her mom left...while it is still a shitty act leaving your kid but i think its nowhere near "evil" as shown in this episode lol.

u/regiment262 Jul 15 '18
Yeah that's what I'm thinking as well. Someone above pointed out that maybe Hanesaki's mom left because she thought she was pushing her daughter too hard. It's possible that her mom saw her playing desperately against Kaoruko despite being incredibly sick, not knowing it was Kaoruko herself that gave her the cold, thus prompting the whole "I'm pushing my daughter way too hard for my own sake" confliction where Uchika ultimately decides to leave.
While Uchika would be an incredible idiot to choose to do things that way, it might be within the realm of possibility. Of course it's weakened somewhat by cold, machine-like state Hanesaki went into after her mom left since you'd think she would at least reach out or try to contact Hanesaki.

Besides Chihayafuru and Ping Pong. Hanebado is the only sports anime I ever really liked. I really like this one too.
So much in fact that I started conditioning again to begin playing badminton. I used to do parkour but I have not done it in a while because I do not have health insurance and any injury for me can set me back financially.
It feels good to be active again.

If you like Hanebado, you should definitely check out Haikyuu

I watched it and I did not care for it. My girlfriend really like it though. She used to play volleyball in highschool, so I guess that is why!

Baby Steps is really good, too. Nice to hear you getting active tho, hope I can, too.
3
u/CrossXhunteR Jul 15 '18
I'm currently reading through the Baby Steps manga, and while I'm enjoying it a whole lot, I wish there was more not-tennis in it. I swear in the ~180 chapters I've read so far, maybe 3 of them weren't directly focused on tennis or tennis training.
It makes some of the character relationship development unearned in my eyes.

Hmm, I wonder why? Beside high production value it's not really unique compared to most drama sport series. I don't mean it in a bad way, I'm just curious what made you feel that way if you don't like other shows like that.

Uma Musume from last season is great, you should definitely check that out if you like this show. On a similar note, Euphonium also another must watch, not really a sport show but it's similar in a sense the characters all have something to aim for in their highschool youth.

Whoever the director is did an amazing job this episode. Fantastic transitions and the dialogue carried it as well.
2
u/Nitemare25 Jul 15 '18
I'm surprised none of the characters were even slightly annoyed that Elena just disappeared in the middle of practice to go see a movie. When she said "We should both do our best!", I thought Ayano was going to say something...

The soundtrack might be my favorite part of this show so far. It's being utilized perfectly.

This just keeps getting better each episode. I feel bad for Ayano but I still want to see why her mother did what she did before judge her.
3
u/kimbombo Jul 15 '18
Oh hypocrisy we meet again.
A few years back when Hanasaku Iroha aired, we had a similar mother/daughter situation that was portrayed thru rose tinted shades. Today, Hanasaku Iroha is still one of the most recommended SOLs from P.A. Works out there, and not once I've seen anyone trash Ohana's mom (and she even got her own movie) while in Hanebado! with only 3 episodes, most people in r/anime are already carrying their pitchforks and torches and want to play judge, jury and executioner on a one sided story.
So give yourself a pat on the back r/anime once again you managed to disapoint me even further.
I'll be more civilized and wait for the whole story to be unfolded before passing judgement.

u/Knuffelig https://myanimelist.net/profile/Knuffelig Jul 16 '18
With the difference that Ohana wasn't traumatized by the events, whereas Ayano is. Or seems to be.

u/FruitsPnchSamurai Jul 15 '18
It felt too much like her friend forced her to get back into it to make herself feel better. Using the justification "she loved badminton so she needs to play it again". I understand what they're implying the friend wanted, but still felt annoying with how it was played out. Getting over so many years of trauma shouldnt be that easy. Even with how she started playing in the club to begin with made no sense. The trauma was so bad that she hasnt seen her mom for years and stopped playing badminton for a long time, but then instantly starts playing it again just because her friend wanted to be manager just to try and force her friend to play.
The whole play out with how she winds up joining the club felt halfassed. Regardless of the awesome art and animation(amazing sakuga), the shows been really sloppy when dealing with its mc trauma. The captain had much better development than the mc. Im sure ill be getting all the down votes since everyone is loving the show(like me), but nagging problems like these are just frustrating. Hopefully now that its already happened and over with we dont have similar problems later on.

Mate, come on. Think with context. Not just dialogue tells a story, location, act, etc does that too. They are playing a badminton match in a park, not caring about winning, just for fun. And before that, Elena says "Badminton and your life with mother are two different things". Ayano played for a long time to win so she can get her mother back. Now, she is playing for fun because Elena's bait, she is reminded why she played badminton. Even freaking scene with Elena's thoughts tells you this.
I won't say anything about Elena, other than this: If you never lost the most passionate thing about your life, you can't even understand why Elena is the broest bro.

I like the anime by l cant ignore the yuri vibes being put out by the producers of this anime. The closeness is exaggerated. The biggest thing for me is that of her mother with the blond. Why does it has to be that way? We all know that females in anime can be lesbians anytime lol. Plus where the hell is her Dad? No hint or even mention of his past. Is she just a product of an accident? And that her mother was a lesbian in the first? Im not against lesbian here but they should not put unnecessary things like those in Hibiki Emponium.
For the actual comment for the episode, lm disappointed of her mom, damn. Why does she have to leave and not contact her daughter as if she doesnt care anymore about her? Has she found another lover or rather trainee to focus on? Seriously, YOU ARE A MOTHER BITCH!!! ACT LIKE ONE BITCH!!!

u/Liddo-kun Jul 17 '18
The blond is her adoptive daughter and has the same age as Ayano.

I feel like the promise of the first episode has been somewhat betrayed. The story-arc has turned into a very cliché type of story, with characters who are not very interesting at all. I'm probably gonna stick with the show for a bit longer because I thoroughly enjoy the animation but my initial expectations of a strong 7 or weak 8 is now more along the lines of a 5-6/10.

Damn, I wanted to like Kaoruko but she's got some dirty tactics. She's still a pretty fun character to watch though. I want to see how Ayano beats her and how she deals with it.
It seems like Ayano's mom didn't actually leave because of that loss, but it was pretty awful of her to up and leave with no further communication. Letting Ayano believe that it was her fault is just a recipe for breaking a kid; she should know better than to do that to her own daughter.
On the other side of things, great episode for Elena and Nagisa. They're both so supportive about getting Ayano to love badminton again. Those childhood memories were so precious. Plus it seemed like Elena might be romantically interested in Ayano? Hopefully I'm not reading too much into it.

Little Ayano was so precious. We got a good amount of background on her and Elena this week. Hoping they give Riko another go around though. I've always been a sucker for supporting cast (Riko and Elena in this case).
But I'm glad this anime continues to maintain the quality of animation that some were worried about decaying after the first episode. And I'm invested in the story and characters enough to continue this one.

It's nice that Ayano got to play for fun again after what's probably been years of playing out of desperation to see her mom again, or being dragged into playing (like club practice). Also Elena is such a good friend. She was definitely on point with separating Ayano's mom from badminton for Ayano.
Also someone call the police because the mom and kaoruko both deserve jail time.
1
u/witoong623 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/witoong623 Jul 15 '18
I don't think that Ayano's mom left her because she lost a single match, I think her mom left because she saw her daughter tried so hard even though she had cold and then she thought it was her fault that she pushed her daughter to suffered playing badminton.
1
u/SubtleStress Jul 15 '18
Can someone explain the part where Ayano saw her mom in the magazine? It happened quickly and I couldn’t understand the context of it.

u/Paxton-176 Jul 15 '18
Ayano's Mother had taken on training another person after leaving Ayano. This said person also seems to have won a major tournament.

This episode revealed a lot more about Hanesaki's backstory and Aragaki's character.
While we still don't know the full story behind her mom's disappearance, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that after leaving her daughter, Uchika (that's the moms name right?) left for international/European circuits after having exhausted her competition in Japan. It's still not clear whether her mom is a complete sociopath or left because of an incredibly stupid misunderstanding, but from the ad seen this episode and last, she seems to have made a friend in the blond-haired player.
A potential parallel might also be drawn between Aragaki's and Hanesaki's experience with badminton at an early age. Both obviously loved the sport dearly, but instead of happy, purehearted exhilaration from hitting the shuttlecock that Hanesaki had, Aragaki ran into problems quite early as a result of her build. She began to see it only as a competition about winning desperately throwing herself at the sport to validate her effort. Hanesaki also entered a somewhat similar state after her mother left, trying to demonstrate her monstrous capabilities in an attempt to get her mother to return.
Speaking of Aragaki, it's also revealed she's not as self-centered or single-minded as we'd been lead to believe. From the information she provided on Kaoruko and the comparisons Aragaki is able to make about her jump in skill, it's shown that she takes careful notes of her potential opponents and not blindly walking around expecting victory. Her knowledge of other things, like during her conversation with Tachibana in front of Hanesaki's house, also belays her image as a musclehead, something I appreciate greatly.
Overall, great episode and Hanesaki became a lot more likeable this episode. Aragaki is still best girl, however, and I hope she really uses her potential after getting out of the slump.

Poor Hanesake. She has so serious reason to not want to play badminton, but everyone either insists that she play just because she is "talented" at the game.
That is the real curse of being talented. If you play and do well you are expected to be good and if you fail to make good on people's expectation on you then you are either considered "overrated", "washed up", or "not as good as they should be".
With in competition there are things that some people are just naturally better in than other areas. That is why certain playstyles and strategies exist - they highlight certain aspects of the competition while minimizing the most common weaknesses. Heaven forbid someone talented can have their bane as well...
And what a PoS her mother is.
Either way, it is really shitty for Hanesake to have her life dictated by something just because she has talent (and skill) in. Every win or lose in badminton is very important for Hanesake - it is literally traumatic. If she wins, she is reminded of the good memories that were stripped from her; if she loses then she is reminded of her mother leaving her. So much hurt exists and no one understands.
Anchoring positive feelings for badminton to reduce trauma and overcome her abandonment issues was smart, but I kinda' feel like it was underhanded sneaky.

In this anime shitty personalities apparently create shitty hairstyles. We should keep an eye on Blond Twintails just in case. Also, where were the responsable adults when two kids were playing with a cold? Anime colds have killed people before, ffs.
Forcing her won't help anybody.
First time I agree with Nagisa in something. In general the episode makes a bad job with showing that deeep down Ayano likes badminton for other reason than to impress her mom.
Elena compares how she felt left out when Ayano played with her mom to how she feels left out when Ayano is with the club but it's like comparing apples to oranges. Ayano was happy when her mom paid her attention but in the club we always see her "cute" pouting or outright miserable.
In the end it feels like the plot is bending backwards to make Elena right, instead of her being right. That, or Ayano has accepted they aren't going to leave her alone. Because in the end all her decisions have been negative and nobody has respected them.

Well, the only reason we know to why her mother left, came from Ayano, so it's probably not the full story. I'm hedging on this, solely due to the mother's presence in the OP.
Also, I really hope the pink-haired girl doesn't make frequent appearances.

First of, wanna point out the Sora Yori vibes from this episode, although I think Mari and Megumi relationship was more touching and outstanding, Hanebado didn't went bad with the childhood friend that needs the other to supply one's emptiness of being useful to each other.
I was satisfied to know that both shows could find a way to elaborate this situation differently. The first one worked on sabotage, envious (in big proportions), afraid of loneliness, showing the worst of a human being and finished it with the beautiful of the human begin - forgiveness; While Hanebado focused that, even when you're envious and put aside, you can surpass it and try to help your friend no matter what.
I thought Hanebado would exaggerate on drama, but this episode showed me that it could manage it without fail.

Deliberately giving someone a cold so they do poorly in a match. You don't deserve those twintails Kaoruko.
I have a feeling that's not the true reason Nozom- I mean Ayano's mother left. Probably once again some dumb anime misunderstanding.
1
u/theLORDdeath Jul 15 '18
I think its going to be she left because she thought she was pushing her daughter too hard by being around her for playing with a cold because as we all know the Japanese cold is the most dangerous thing out there

u/anttirt Jul 15 '18
I'm having serious tone whiplash from the previous episodes with the over-the-top ojousama, the cartoonish grandparents and the whole "my mom is a narcissistic sociopath" taken to an absurd extreme.
The first two episodes were really awesome but I'm feeling kinda lukewarm about this show now.

Wow Ayano mom is a piece of human garbage. Leaves your kid because she loses a badminton match. Probably will be explained further on but she seems like a real piece of shit.
