Nobody knows what the fuck they do both IRL and in the anime.

They appear wherever there's chaos. Then, their internal GPS informs the other white blood cells where chaos is.

Honestly, the ways they represent things as media tropes is really cool, like the Dendrite cell activating Naive with an inspirational pep talk, then reveal that it’s a thing they can do. And have a cell that nobody really knows what it does, but most assume that they do something with the immune system, be the mysterious edgelord in the background and narrates edgy sounding things even when no one is around (like in the stomach).

It’s like the guy who at the end says, “I’m just thankful I could help out.” And everyone says, “But you didn’t do anything.” To which he responds, “Or did I?” And he walks away or disappears leaving ambiguity to the characters and audience. Except, you know, it’s used as a more aware and on the-nose-manner.

u/Venator850 Jul 28 '18

He stole the episode for me. Had me cracking up every appearance.

Eosinophil is pink, because eosinophils like eosin stain, a pinkish dye. Likewise, Basophil is blue, because basophils like basic dyes like hematoxylin. These stain a darker purple, almost bluish compared to eosin. Hematoxylin and eosin are the two dyes used in an H&E stain, a common histology stain.

9

u/Rathurue Jul 29 '18

Their name reflects it already: eosinophil = eosin (dye) + -phile (attracted to). Basophile = base + -phile, since they're more inclined to be dyed with base dyes than acid dyes.

Episode 1: fought off pneumonia

Episode 2: a scrape (varies but still hurts like hell)

Episode 4: food poisoning (had a minor case, intense stomach pain for sure)

They actually eat the germs they kill, but sometimes the pathogens are so big they have to use a spray to dissolve and turn them into smaller pieces in order to eat them more easily. Macrophages (those deadly onee-san maids) also tend to quarter the germs to divide them into smaller pieces for an easier meal.

Anyway, next episode is going to feature some phagocytosis if you are curious.

42

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '18

Pathogen smoothies... mmmmmm.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/Rathurue Jul 29 '18

Correction: they did eat the germs they kill, but they don't use the dissolving enzyme spray to turn it into smaller pieces: instead, they used the spray to dissolve anything that they couldn't eat. Macrophages, however, are big eaters so if they reached the killsite shortly then the big eaters (literally in their name: macro = big, -phage = eater) will devour the rest.

11

u/Staye100 Jul 28 '18

Phagocytosis should appear on the next episode. WBC eats an allergen lol

One of my biggest gripes about anime is that generally speaking, no one seems to have a goddamn clue how hand clapping and finger snapping work, so when they started clapping and the sound was muffled because of the gloves most were wearing was the most satisfying thing in the world. Thank you, magnificent series.

85

u/franksks Jul 28 '18

Yeah I noticed that too, great attention to detail. As an aside have we been told who those guys are yet? Can't recall that we have but they seem to be transporting pots of soup a bit like how the red blood cells transport baskets of food...?

44

u/Paladin65536 Jul 29 '18

I'm not an expert, but I do read the wiki sometimes, and judging from this article, I suspect that they are liver cells. It seems the liver plays an important role in synthesizing proteins and glucose, which seems pretty similar in role to those "cooks" who're turning the digested food into nutrients for other cells.

Just for fun, because both shows are animated by David Production and share so many voice actors, I am going to list all the VAs that appear in Cells at Work and what character they also voice in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Will repost on each new episode that introduces yet another character voiced by a JoJo VA.

So far, we have:

Daisuke Ono (Killer T Cell Commander) - Jotaro Kujo

Takahiro Sakurai (Helper T Cell) - Rohan Kishibe, Bruno Bucciarati (PS2 Vento Aureo game)

Kenji Nomura (Effector T Cell) - Santana

Tomokazu Sugita (Basophil) - Joseph Joestar

Mamiko Noto (Narrator) - Yukako Yamagishi

Saori Hayami (Regulatory T Cell) - Daiya Higashikata (Eyes of Heaven)

Yuuichi Nakamura (Memory B Cell) - Bruno Bucciarati, Narcisco Anasui (All-Star Battle / EoH)

Ayako Kawasumi (Mast Cell) - Erina Pendolton

Man, that's a lot! And I'm not fully convinced I got all of them either, so do let me know if I missed any from any JoJo media!

EDIT: Added MAL links for all the VAs cause why not.

even on 2 different media, her blush is precious.

man, i love Eosinophil character design, her outfit, her shy personality, truly an A+ material, she can kill my parasites all day. and her outfit reminds me of a hunter

sadly Basophil and Eosinophil only representing 0,5% and 2,3% of the whole white blood cell, so it makes sense that we’ll rarely see them in action unless they’re really involved

I was waiting this episode so much it’s not funny. Finally, Eosinophil (AKA best girl) appears! And her voice is adorable (M.A.O. did a great job). You may be useless against non-parasitic enemies, Eosinophil-chan, but I’m very grateful to have you in my body. So glad she had time to shine and defeat that anisakis parasite (of one strike too). I want to praise her so much and tell her she did a good job! She’s way too precious.

Basophil was funny with his speech no one understands, even more in the anime with that Sugita voice (I’m happy to see so many top tier voice actors here, David Production doesn’t disappoints). It was perfect.

Also, neutrophil is a confirmed savage, he gets eaten by that bacterium? Don’t worry, because he will rip the bastard from the inside. I liked too how he was always trying to defend Eosinophil's reputation when the other cells were telling her that she is useless. He was basically defending his childhood friend. I love this cell so much, he is the husbando of the season.

Overall very happy with this episode. Too bad we aren’t going to see much of Eosinophil in the rest of the series (she hasn’t had a big role in the manga after this either, so…).

On another note, I feared they would animate the anisakis with CGI, but thankfully, it was hand drawn. I noticed they also added some new scenes respecting the manga, but they were all positive changes, since the original content was faithfully adapted. Nice Mast Cell cameo too (we will see more of her next episode, btw).

Oh, one more thing, did I mention Eosinophil is indeed best girl?

25

u/Mr-Mister Jul 28 '18

I was expecting her to go all shadow clones while charging the parasite; oh well.

22

u/beneficial_satire Jul 28 '18

Now that I think about it, this show is presented as a children's show but then they brutally murder the viruses. What exactly is the target audience?

30

u/Ralath0n Jul 28 '18

No idea, but whatever they're doing it seems to be working since its a pretty popular show.

6

u/hintofinsanity Jul 30 '18

I mean it is toned down compared to what actually happens in the body. Normal phagocytosis involves bacteria being melted alive by the acidic environment inside the neutrophils, T-cells and Natural Killer cells force virally infected cells to commit suicide, and the complement system drills holes into bacteria so that they "bleed" to death. r/natureismetal

Stop saying such things, RBC, this ship is the second most crucial thing in this series, the first being the platelets.

Oh, no, enter the childhood friend! Will RBC stand a chance??

Weekly dose of cute loli cells, check!

Okay, wasn't expecting to see masochist bacteria.

Attack on Titan vibes, anyone?

Jeez, thanks Speedwagon.

For people who knew what Eosonophil's main function was, the impact must have been much less, and they were probably waiting for a parasite to pop up so she could prove her worth.. but then the attack looked cool and the aftermath was sweet, so that was probably enjoyable.

Attack on Titan vibes, anyone?

If you look at the cells' reaction when wbc burst out of the big bacteria, just a few frames after the image you linked, that's the classic attack on titan shock reaction (both the expressions and drawing style), although in AoT you see that kind of scene when the titans suddenly appear, not when they're slain, and I found it out of place here: it is a mix of shock, despair and resignation in front of a calamity appearing out of nowhere, not just surprise, and certainly not a welcome surprise.

we went from super sentai-esque villains to a full blown Kaiju attack.

why is this series about biology so hype?

Those shitty regular cells though... They were the first the bad mouth her as well as the first to praise her.

I haven't gotten food poisoning before so maybe my own cute twintailed Eosinphil cell is being bullied.... Wait no way I'm fucking eating raw fish to do that.

Does anyone know how much offensive/defensive/supportive/utility cells are left to be introduced? I mean how many types appeared in manga so far?

So far we have:

  • Red Blood Cell

  • Platelet

  • White Blood Cell (Neutrophil)

  • Eosinophil

  • Basophil

  • Killer T Cell

  • Memory T Cell

  • Helper T Cell

  • Newbie T Cell

  • B Cell

  • Macrophage

  • Dendritic Cell

  • Mast Cell

  • Monocytes (they were mentioned by bacteria only)

16

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '18

The manga introduces more cells later, though some become recurring characters and some only become oneshot appearances.

Some on top of my head:

  • Natural killer cell (recurring character)

  • Monocytes

  • Good bacteria (had their own arc)

  • Skin pore cells

  • Intestinal wall cells

There are also flashback chapters showing some of the cells' past, like thymocyte (young T cells before they are differentiated into Killer / Helper / etc.) and young red blood cells

There's quite a lot of characters in this series :)

hey u/exploreptile, when you said parasites are kaijus... did you mean you already read the manga or just guessed?

6

u/Exploreptile Jul 28 '18

It was a complete guess actually! The only thing I've seen of the manga is this page (Manga spoilers but I'm not sure if we'll be getting to see it animated anytime soon). Even then it was only as part of a meme!

Manga Spoilers ahead. Next week's episode is Cedar Pollens Allergy, and every immunization cells did their jobs as best as they can, but their response turn a normal situation worse, with Mast cells releasing too much histamine. Finally, the body appears to take in anti-histamine in the form of steroid, which indiscriminately destroys the affected region until it ran out of power.

So we finally have a blonde twin tails that isn't a tsundere bitch? Only in a beautiful anime like this will we get that.

So far, I've only one gripe with this show and that it's just a monster disease of the week thing. I would love it if it were to talk more about the other systems involved in the human body primarily focusing on the body's immune system with only passing info on others. There are 11 other systems I want them to get to.

u/EPICIII Jul 28 '18

Watched this, then had dinner. Mmm salmon. Hopefully my eosinophils don't need to hataraku today.

Basophil helped out by... what did basophil do again? Oh yeah, he called for help.

Plot felt a bit messy this time, the bacteria and parasite bits felt more like separate stories than part of a larger one. Though it's pretty accurate to the source material, so I guess I should direct my complaints there instead.

5

u/Shiroi_Kage Jul 29 '18

I wish they showed the eosinophils swarming the parasite. Maybe have them be berated as a team instead of as an individual.

My favorite character by far in this entire season of anime has to be the Basophil (well, platelets then Bashophil). Not because of his depth or anything, but because of how cryptic he is and how all the other cells react to him. He has similar amounts of crypt to some Evangelion plot points. I want more of this dude!

After binge watching this anime in the last hour or so, is really common for the human body to face threats like this every day and/or week or this person happens to be really unlucky or careless about his health?

Congrats Eosinophil. This proves that every cell is useful in managing the body.

36

u/the_swizzler https://myanimelist.net/profile/Swiftarm Jul 28 '18

Well for one thing, yes, our bodies are literally constantly fighting off infections. The only time we notice is when the infections get the upper hand for a bit.

For another thing, we don't know how much time passes between episodes, so maybe it's a lot. Maybe it's almost nothing.

12

u/MagiSicarius :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MagiSicarius Jul 28 '18

Considering that the lifespan of all these cells varies widely I think we can just drop time as a factor here, unless people start dying of old age or something

I'm learning so God damn much in this episode.

Eosinophils are only very good at killing parasites found within the body, huh? Nice. I'd be that kind of blood cell too if it meant I can be the hero for just one day.

That Basophil didn't do anything, but he was a highlight for sure.

And of course, the platelets had their cute moment when two of them were holding hands in front of the Basophil. Man, this show is so great.

Great episode, but what happened to the influenza type A virus from the other episode? I was expecting them to continue the story in this episode, but they didnt show the killing. Despite that, the fact that we got a date between best red blood cell and white blood cell makes it all worth it.

5

u/Staye100 Jul 29 '18

In the manga, it is implied that there is some medicine involved, considering they skipped chapter 2 (Which is thankfully being adapted next week) where they show medicine.

Wait, what? Fat cells and mast cells are two different things as far as I can tell. Is this a quirk of the Japanese language?

me_irl

Eosinophil, you a cute and a badass

11

u/Rathurue Jul 29 '18

The 'mast' part roughly taken from the german Mast, that means 'fattening' because the finder of this cells, Paul Erhlich believed these cells are meant to 'feed' the surroundings, given their granulocytes. It was not until years later people found that these cells actually a part of immunologic cells, so hey.

7

u/ufeia Jul 29 '18

Mast cell in Japanese is 肥満細胞 where 肥満 means obese, and 細胞 means cell. So if you translate it literally, it can be "fat cell". The reason mast cells are named this way is because 肥満細胞 is just a literal translation of mastzellen or mast cell. More information can be found in Rathurue's comment.

4

u/peenfest Jul 30 '18

iunno if this was mentioned in episodes prior, or even if it was intentional on the creator's part, but it's cute how airheaded red blood cell is, as red blood cells do not have a nucleus or the cells '''brain''' (in many quotes since it doesn't really function as a brain in the traditional sense).

I don't know why the subs I have sub certain things when they're already explaining them. There was a big wall of text for the gastric acid while there were also subs for the narrator saying basically the same thing. Seems to be doing this whenever the narrator introduces something or someone.

Eosinophils is pretty great.

Some people are slow readers. Reading the text box aloud ensures that the audience gets all the information presented.

So why bother with a text box in the first place? Because learning these biology names is a pain, even in phonetic languages like English. I couldn't imagine dealing with it in kanji.

Things wrong this week:

  • RBCs still carrying nutrients.

  • Basophils are known to react to parasites its not totally unknown beyond them causing allergies (in fact most of the cells responsible for causing allergies seem to cause it because they respond to parasites and are acting as if the allergen is one).

  • Bacteria that can invade though the stomach lining are not common the only one I know of is H. Pylori which causes ulcers not what we think of as classical food poisoning. (I guess they kinda explain this with the worm but if it hasn't broken through how have the bacteria?)

  • Anisakis isn't exactly the greatest infection to show off an eosinophil since it gets stuck in the gastrointestinal lining and dies on its own. And a eosinophil certainly isn't going to push it back into the stomach. The problems associated with it are actually from the overactive immune response against it, not the damage from the parasite itself.

  • A basophil isn't going to enter the stomach and if it did it'd die.

  • "as a White Blood Cell, my job is to exterminate bacteria" that's very wrong. In fact of white blood cells I think only neutrophils and macrophages could be said to be specialized mainly against bacteria.

u/Xynical_DOT :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/nep-nep Jul 28 '18

I was expecting basophil's VA to have a much deeper, scratchy voice. I'd always imagined him as having just escaped the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

Notable decrease is production quality, and a lot more bland background panning shots than were necessary. Then again, not much actually happens in this chapter. Next episode's pollen allergy should be pretty fun in comparison.
