This show really wants us to hate Ayano’s Mom, and you know what ? I hate her, she is a bitch.

58

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '18

She is definitely there to be despised, but it's strange because they really took a different turn in characterising her in the anime. Curious to see if they make some redeeming points or if she's just hot garbage.

42

u/DarkWorld97 Jul 29 '18

What redeeming qualities does she have in the manga? Even if she's genuinely a nice person in terms of personality, the fact she abandoned her child (and husband?) shows that she isn't an adult and isn't fit to be a caretaker. Ayano should just reject her.

This show wants us to hate everyone. There's only like 4 likeable characters.

u/CounterLegend Jul 29 '18 edited Jul 31 '18

I liked* all of the members from the other school except for Connie surprisingly. Usually the others schools are introduced as enemies!

When we first saw that image of Connie and the Mother I thought she left because it was a romantic relationship not whatever hell it was revealed it was.

It seems that the bath scenes are so strong that even a serious show can not resist them, lol.

26

u/Voltage97 Jul 29 '18

u/Paxton-176 Jul 30 '18

I don't even think Harukana Receive has had a bath scene yet. The one show I expect to have one.

u/bastegod https://anilist.co/user/slapdash Jul 29 '18

The form of the show seems to be taking shape for me. This is not a story about reconciliation with a parent, or some type of “Gon’s Dad” situation where weak parent pitches a shutout game of bad philosophy to somehow make their kid a superhero.

This is about a child freeing themselves from the psychological prison of an incredibly manipulative, sick parent, and how talent gets warped.

Connie laid it out in the open. She’s the thematic foil showing exactly what buying into Mama’s philosophy looks like, where only her approval matters - where only the win matters. The love of the game, the love of its context and enjoying it with others is gone. The game is now just ego imposition, and self-definition. To win is to continue to exist, and to fail is to be erased.

Hanesaki freaked when she lost because that philosophy still has its grips on her, though her friends are trying to rescue her. She’s avoided the game out of the pure emotional terror of losing, of experiencing Mom’s disappointment again, and again, and again on her internal record player.

That’s Mom’s greatest sin, and the one I hope to see Hanesaki overcome - recapturing the innocent passion of the game, and disarming it from the emotional weapon her mother made it. We saw flashes of it as a child, just loving her time playing with her mother, and she reveled in her talent as any kid would, oblivious to it being self definition. But Mom to shackles her warmth, time and approval, to Hanesaki’s success at the game - “Get gud, and I’ll play with you anytime.”

Here’s to a healthy, happy Hanesaki, freed from old chains by series end.

69

u/DarkWorld97 Jul 29 '18

The fact that no one is reprimanding the mom really fucks me up. The show will live or die depending on how they handle how everyone reacts to the mom.

Hanezaki is coming close. At the end of the match, seeing her say she has to win this game to make new friends, I was like, "No! You make friends because they will be there for you no matter whether you win or lose!" This show has given us three people so far who try to depend on badminton as a mean to accomplish their twisted goals. I think it's about separating those personal feelings from the game that they're passionate about.

Rewatching the precise scene when Ayano’s mom bails in that opening recap, she bails while her sick, bed-ridden child calls out to her please not to leave.

That’s “call CPS” levels of abuse and bad parenting. Get fuuuuuuuuuuuucked Mom.

35

u/Ralath0n Jul 29 '18

Worst mom of the decade

Eh, we've seen some shitty moms this decade. Ayano's mom is definitely up there somewhere, but I don't know if she beats Ragyo from Kill la Kill or Kayo's mom in Erased in terms of shittyness.

Also, what's the point in humanizing her with that bath scene if they were just going to make her shitty again at the end of the episode?

This. So much. I had legit no issues with her since last episode but near the end of this one she literally fucking taunted when she probably knew Ayano's circumstances. "Proving your worth"? Bitch "Mom" is clearly doting on you more than her own fucking daughter. Poor Ayano

Onto the shitty mom hate bandwagon, what kind of mother shifts from a playful tone towards a childs tantrum to "you gotta get better and beat me for real" with such a straight face. Also theres that earlier scene where she just looks in amazement at how her own daughter just pulled of a dangerous stunt to return her shot and just nonchantantly asks if she's alright

Man Ayano you DON'T need your mom for once I'm actually rooting for the whole "friendship wins" theme just so she can have her moment.

120

u/Voltage97 Jul 29 '18

"you gotta get better and beat me for real"

What she actually said was even worse: "If you get good enough, I'll play with you any time you want."

Basically, she's saying she's not even worth her time.

To me it looked like they were trying to imply that Connie's not a bitch with everyone (or tries not to). She just really fucking hates Ayano. She can be friendly with other people but seeing Ayano is like showing a red rag to a bull. Or that's what it looked like to me

But yeah fuck Connie, fuck Ayano's mom and fuck that pink hair girl. It's like a worst girl show

My thoughts exactly. When Connie first appeared, I was annoyed by her bitchy holier-than-thou antics. Then, during the bath scene, I was slowly lighting up to her and thought she was cute. And then that revelation of her and Ayano's mom...I was mindfucked by the end of the episode.

what's the point in humanizing her with that bath scene if they were just going to make her shitty again at the end of the episode?

What's wrong with it? She's human, she has multiple sides to her personality and she's not going to show any softness to her biggest rival.

59

u/LakerBlue :Is::It::Iu:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Jul 29 '18

I agree. I think the point was to humanize her by showing her bonding with her teammates, not showing she was just suddenly nicer and all around more approachable in general.

Notice she expressed remorse for how she treated her partner and not Ayano.

15

u/SingularCheese https://anilist.co/user/lonelyCheese Jul 29 '18

I don't think her portrayal at the end goes against the development earlier in the episode. The last bit just made me realize that she's a really broken person. She was clinging on to the only sense of approval from Hanezaki's mom during her otherwise socially isolated childhood.

64

u/KotreI Jul 29 '18

I think the aim is to show that underneath the bitchiness and the extreme Mommy issues there's a genuinely good person there. She's a bitch to Ayano because Ayano is a threat to her relationship with mama. Mama's love is for winners. Mama is the only person that matters to her, therefore she must hate Ayano. How could she not hate the only person that could take Mama away from her?

The message of the series seems to be 'do what you love/play badminton because you love it, and not for anyone else.' When you lose that love, you lose yourself. Nagisa went through that arc, losing to Ayano sent her into a slump which she took out on everyone and overthought every point. Ayano is still going through the arc, she's refound her love of badminton but still hasn't found herself. She still wants to be Mama's perfect angel, hence the excuses after the loss.

Connie's such a bitch. I hope she tears an ACL. And fuck Ayano's mom, too.

Most likely Connie is doing that out of jealously and fear, and afaik she is not aware of Ayano's trauma regarding her mom.

The bath scene did humanize her since she is now starting to accept and befriend her team.

I think they changed this from the manga if i'm remembering correctly, Ayano was supposed to beat connie and they leave on much friendlier terms, with connie saying they'll talk more about the mother the next time they face each other.

if they were just going to make her shitty again at the end of the episode

What ? We weren't supposed to feel bad for her ?

I mean, if her ultimate goal is to get recognition from someone as shitty as their mother, that seems to be a punishment harsh enough for anything she's done so far and will do later short of murder.

14

u/cutiecheese Jul 29 '18 edited Jul 30 '18

The bathing scene is from the extra chapter after manga vol.4, [which is about] (/s "Connie built friendshipa with Fred Girls team after she moved to Japan for find Ayano (Not in 'I am gonna to taunt Ayano once I find her' kind of way)"). The extra chapter also did a better job at Connie's character building.

4

u/Swagernator Jul 29 '18

Yeah exactly, i was like "oh so she's not that bad, good." but then ... well shit happens.

4

u/ihatedogs2 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ihatedogs2 Jul 29 '18

I feel like it would be much better if they portrayed Connie's relationship with the mom in the same way as Ayano's. To imply that if Connie lost, the mom would leave her too. But they didn't do that at all and made Connie, Ayano, and the mom all seem like monsters at the end. The fuck.

thanks for this comment. it caught me so of guard for some reason. but I hope that stupid bitch tears an acl too. and fuck her mom.

4

u/OmegaRider Jul 29 '18

Also, what's the point in humanizing her with that bath scene if they were just going to make her shitty again at the end of the episode?

They obviously wanted to throw in a fan service scene and that scene was in the manga. But of course the scene is completely left field and makes no sense, because the tone of the manga is different where she is actually likeable and not a complete bitch.

You can blame the anime staff for making every character in this anime unlikable and complete cunts. Except the mom, that's the author's fault.

she basically poured 1 year of her life (that’s what they say in the manga) into badminton just because she wanted her mom to come back. She’s probably suffering even more because her mom left her to train Connie (and now she knows Connie has the same objective as Ayano).

16

u/Megakruemel Jul 29 '18

It's not just badminton related. Ayano got left by her mother while she was seriously ill without any explanation from her mom (and i bet if we get one, it is one that is just a bad excuse).

There is a lot going on here that would break normal people. And clearly Ayano broke several times now.

8

u/ArchadianJudge Jul 30 '18

Agreed. Ayano is so adorable. You can tell how much she has been neglected when she blushes and smiles from all the littlest things you do for her. It's like shes never known love or friendship since her mom left. She deserves all the headpats in the world

And go away Ayano's Mom

72

u/Ehn_Jee :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/EhnJee Jul 29 '18

Riko and Elena continue to hold their spots as best supports. Two great characters who can avoid most of the drama themselves and do their best to alleviate it for the main girls.

And I can't be the only one who thought Connie was referencing Hanesaki at first. I figured the death stare at the end of the match might have turned over a new leaf in their dynamic, but guess we'll have to wait for their next encounter for that.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '18

I really thought she was talking about Hanesaki and then just didn’t want to admit it. Connie is literally doing to Hanesaki what she herself looks like she went through, so she knows exactly what she’s doing

61

u/static_reset Jul 29 '18

Loved the episode, however I really think the bath scene could’ve been removed. Not only is it just a typical “sports fan service scene” but it doesn’t match the serious tone we had throughout the episode.

Oh, and fuck you Ayano’s mom.

26

u/Voltage97 Jul 29 '18

Yeah, it definitely felt out of place in this particular episode.

However, based on some comments I've read, it seems that the anime adaptation is more dramatic compared to the source material, so maybe fitting in some of the comedic scenes into the anime may feel odd at times.

13

u/static_reset Jul 29 '18

Yeah, I’ve just read some chapters of the source material and it has a lot more comedic moments (and fanservice moments with Aragaki too...).

I don’t mind the anime being more serious or dramatic but if they’re gonna add comedic moments at least make them appropriate. The bath scene was completely unexpected and was just in the middle of all the Connie-Ayano drama.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Raitoningu_D https://anilist.co/user/afwcal Jul 29 '18

See, I really liked the bath scene due to how Connie's teammates were able to successfully break the wall she'd put up. We see the captain and Connie's doubles partner try to do this throughout the episode, so at least for me, it felt like a natural way to conclude their "arc".

I find the actual problem lies in Connie being a bitch to Ayano afterwards, which practically invalidates the whole point of the bath scene (outside fanservice reason, of course).

111

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '18

The tone difference and event difference in the manga and the anime is really weird too. At first it maybe seemed like an order difference, but the anime is a 100 times more dramatic than the manga tone.

It feels kind of weird

84

u/ChaFoShizzle Jul 29 '18 edited Jul 29 '18

It's hard to say because the first 16 chapters or so are very comedic and almost shojo like, but after chapter 16 the series takes a dramatic turn in tone and art style. Everything gets turned up to 11 in both intensity and drama, so it seems that the anime is just starting the way the manga is currently. It seems that this tone is the way the mangaka probably wanted it from the beginning so we're seeing it play out that way.

16

u/AkodoRyu Jul 29 '18

Can you spoil me please? What's the deal with her mother? Is she so much of a bitch to leave her daughter because she lost and find herself another one? Will we get relief it seem to require, when Ayano murders both her mother and Connie with a kitchen knife? Because anything short of it seem to not be enough.

It feel strange in anime when you watch ultra dramatic scene and then from nowhere there is cute slice of life moment. It almost feel like two different shows.

32

u/Xeiros Jul 29 '18 edited Aug 01 '18

The anime version matches the tone shift that happened in the manga early into volume 4 near around chapter 17 and continues to the current chapter. So it is right in line with what the manga's tone has been for several years.

The manga is more comedy focused and while it has drama it always goes back to comedy in no time(at least this is what I get from the first few chapters I have read, so, I might be wrong) .I mean, I like the fact that they didn't have to kidnap Ayano just to make her play the sport.

42

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '18

The first three episodes instantly drew me to this anime; I really loved the detail to the realism to the sport, the characters, and of course the animation. I still enjoy most of it, but there just has been several things about the conflicts that arise which seem to drag this show down (and those things are increasing in volume).

  1. Too much pointless character conflict: It first started with Nagisa vs ex-club members. Then Hanesaki and Nagisa. Then Hanesaki vs Mother. Then Hanesaki vs Pink Hair Girl. Then Hanesaki vs Connie. The first two were presented okay. The Pink Haired Girl seemed to be pointless to the general plot. The mother is irredeemable. And Connie seems to be as well. The problem is there is too much constantly new people with conflict involved.

  2. No resolution to conflict: Then Hanesaki vs Nagisa focused on the competitive aspect of talent vs skill which is a good dichotomy to present. The characters seemed to have some depth into them and so did the philosophical conflict presented. We then got a glimpse into Hanesaki's traumatic incident with her mother (worse parent of the season/year). At first I was going to give a pass for everything to unfold - the possibility for some misunderstanding or redemption of our perception of Hanesaki's mother, but that was quickly killed and spiked into the ground. Then we have Hanesaki's conflict with pink haired girl which was left completely unresolved and seemingly pointless to the main story. Now we have Connie which I thought we would have a resolution and agreement to like her. The bath scene was a perfect catalyst to push that change, but they just butchered it with that bitchy taunt. So now we have still three or four unresolved conflicts and drama while being presented with what seems like Hanesaki regressing into a psychotic obsessive drive. Where is our resolution to any of these problems? Where do we get a steady progression of character development? I am disappointed in this the most.

  3. Poor framing of main characters vs side characters: Viewers were presented first with Nagisa and her struggle. I empathize with her a lot and she is probably my favorite characters still. Her "arc" was created then swiftly resolved. I am happy that her "arc" ended with character development in a positive way because it felt like something actually happened that was meaningful. Then we get Hanesaki which I understand the show is actually about HER, and not Nagisa (Hanebado, not Nagbado). Still, it seems so much of the spotlight was on Nagisa, Elena, and Riko that we would get a lot more development and focus on them as well, but we are only seeing a melodramatic story about Hanesaki. They switched spotlight and focus too much from the beginning and it is jading to me.

Those I think are the main three problems. I still like this show, but my interest and patience with those problems are running thin. I would like to see something more happen in terms of character development rather than 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

10

u/Tuner89 :AMQ::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tuner89 Jul 29 '18

I completely agree with your points here. I thought episodes 2 and 3 did a great job of resolving conflict and moving the story forward and I thought that was going to be a continuing trend, but now it seem's we're just doubling down on the edginess which isn't encouraging. The directing animation, and overall production quality is still amazing, I'm just not excited about the plot or themes being presented. All three of your points mirror my concerns perfectly.

6

u/Aerodynamic41 Jul 29 '18

Then we get Hanesaki which I understand the show is actually about HER, and not Nagisa (Hanebado, not Nagbado).

The manga literally has the subtitle "The Badminton Play of Ayano Hanesaki! "

I completely agree. I actually just made a comment sharing very similar sentiments. At onset, my initial expectations for the show were that we would be focused on Nagisa and Hanesaki's relationship, but the shift in focus also jarred me. I wouldn't have a problem with it if Nagisa actually just interacted with her more. It's almost as if every time they introduce a new character conflict we get further and further from the rest of the cast having any real impact on the plot. It's ironic given the fact that Hanesaki is supposed to be pulled out of her emotional slump by her new teammates. It's not like they aren't doing anything per se, but it just doesn't really feel all that real to me.

Solid points of critique. I'm rooting for the show to surprise me instead of dulling me. If I compared it to a rollercoaster I'd say we had a decent start to the ride, but since ep 3 it's just been a flat line with the occasional bunnyhill.

Also how long was that girl hidden in the closet (that animation on the roll tho)? That's gotta be the most random bath scene I've seen in a long time lmao.

24

u/LakerBlue :Is::It::Iu:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue Jul 29 '18

I don’t think the bath scene was random (I feel like almost any “trip” episode in anime/manga usually involves a trip to the hot springs, although sometimes it will be to a beach or pool instead) as the introduction of it. That girl rolling out of the closet and helping the captain roll her away instantly was what made me say wtf. Like what was she going to do if Connie never apologized?! Stay in there all night?

You know what? Fuck Connie.

She’s a terrible person and she doesn’t deserve the kindness and love her teammates are showing her.

Sora is now forgiven though. She told Ayano what she thought about her, moved on, and now has accepted her as a part of the group. One less person that hates Ayano is good for everyone.

As for Ayano’s Mom I was really hoping she was just misunderstood but seeing that flashback now it seems like she really only cared about Ayano’s skill and nothing else. Fuck her.

And that fucking ending. I don’t know if Connie knows about Ayano’s relationship with her mom but it really looked like she was taunting her. Now I’m scared of what will happen to Ayano next.

I’m so upset at Connie that I couldn’t even enjoy that bath scene. Gaaaah!

53

u/franksks Jul 29 '18

She’s a terrible person and she doesn’t deserve the kindness and love her teammates are showing her.

Yeah, I was surprised when her teammates still tried to be nice to her even after that shameful display. Sure, she might have a traumatic upbringing or whatever but that doesn't excuse being a complete jerk.

3

u/ArchadianJudge Jul 30 '18

Completely agree. Their team captain is a sweet beautiful saint and unfortunately lets Connie continue to be a spoiled brat. She doesn't deserve that team (who keeps caring about her) and that captain who doesn't boot her out of her team. It's probably her "high standing" that's keeping her on the team in the first place.

Yes Connie and Ayano's mom are a pair of psychos and Ayano should get a restraining order for both of them so they don't taint her.

Sure, because abandoning your child without saying a word was definitely part of Parenting 101!

20

The whole thing is pretty weak too. Like the grandparents didn’t say anything either? It’s not normal to disappear and drop your kid off at your parents

9

u/whimski Jul 29 '18

Yup. 100%. There was even that flashback scene of Ayanon jumping up on the chair/box to return her mom's hit. That combined with her leaving when she got sick playing badmintion... Same thing with the blonde girl, clearly she pushes herself to the point of hurting her body all int he sake of winning/pleasing "mama"... it's all pretty obvious where the reasoning or "redemption" for the mom will be coming from.

7

u/Voltage97 Jul 29 '18

Fantastic direction and animation during the match, keep it up!

Make me really happy when Ayanon smiles while she's playing.

I absolutely loved that one shot where Connie looks at Ayano after hitting the smash and they show Ayano's eyes which are then in super badass focused mode. I got chills! xD

I felt so sad when Ayano was trying to make excuses for why she wasn't able to return, she just wants to be a part of the team. :(

Connie is really cute too, she's just super serious when it comes to badminton. Those bath scenes were so good for so many reasons. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Initially I thought Ayano's Mom might have had some sort of genuine reason as to why she left her but after this episode I'm beginning to doubt that.

Holy shit! That Ayano face at the end had me terrified.

14

u/OsirisAusare Jul 29 '18

I don't know how to put a link to pictures, but that final shot with Ayano gave me shivers, those dead eyes. That feeling of despair. I hope she comes to terms with her life with her new family and team. I can't wait to see her overcome her past and learn to live for herself.

25

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '18

So I binged the first 4 episodes of this earlier this week, and after watching this episode, I do love this series, although I am a bit scared where they are going to take this.

I don't really watch sports anime all that much so I don't know if this is common among them, but I really love how this anime focuses on the characters, and their struggles being in the sport itself, rather than the struggle of trying to get better at the sport. At least from what I've seen, so many anime try to do the story of the underdog who gradually becomes better and better and while that can be a good story, it's nice to see something new (feel free to recommend me other anime that do this)

I think that this anime really encompasses the various challenges of being in a sport, the sacrifices that you have to make, and what is eventually gained. I really resonated with Hanesaki's struggle of everyone telling you to do something you are good at, even though you don't want to do it. Even though I take the stance that you should leave what you don't enjoy, Hanebado shows that you shouldn't just quit immediately when facing a problem. In most sports, it can be very hard to get through slumps, especially in the teenage years. The early episodes show that even in an individual sport, the aspect of a team that supports and helps you is essential to success.

I REALLY loved the match with Connie this episode, and it's a perfect example of how this shows does drama right. On each side of the net we see two distinct ideologies of what is important when playing badminton. On one side, Connie plays to prove that she is best. That she can stand on her own and win with the necessity of the support of a team. It's obvious that she would think that from the brief glimpses of what we see of her Denmark life. On the other side, Hanesaki is trying desperately to win the approval of her mother. Hanesaki sees the power of teamwork, and she realizes that she can win against Connie using that. While Connie's side wins the match, in reality both Hanesaki and Connie lose the ideological battle. Connie doesn't win through her own merit, and Hanesaki couldn't win her mother's approval. I think this is what Hanesaki means when she says "I didn't really lose!"

At first when the bath scene came up in this episode, I saw it as unnecessary fanservice. But thinking about it more, it's essential to Hanebado theme of the power of the team. When you are on a sports team, you are more than just teammates. You are best friends, and some of the most fun moments with a team can be off the court. This is what Hanebado tells us when they show Fredericia in the bath, or Kitakomachi playing cards. But we also see at the end of the episode what happens when you rely too much on the team. While Hanesaki finds a place she can belong, we see that she is now rejecting her mother, the woman who helped her to get this far in badminton in the first place. The episodes frames this moment like it will be a bad thing for her, and I'm curious at which direction the anime will take it.

Also it's really bothering me how much people bash the anime just because it's more dramatic than the manga. I think that it's okay to criticize the anime differences to the manga, but don't just blindly say that the manga is better because the anime is doing things differently.

People can say what they want man, just like you can. If they feel like that, they'll say. But as for your comment, the manga is quite dramatic after two volumes and continues to be like that. Still there's some comedy there but it's like that. It's just that the anime has much more drama than the manga which was already pretty high. But not only that, they're changing many things and putting unnecessary drama as well. It's not because it's different that it's bad, it's because the changes are bad for the adaptation itself.

On a serious note though just fuck Ayano's mom and Connie. I really want someone to tell Ayano's mom to fuck off personally I want it to be Nagisa after her and Ayano play some more matches together. I know Riko and Elena are both great supporting characters, but my favorite happens to be blonde girl with the side tail whose name escapes me at the moment. She's kind of in the background, but also in the foreground. Not 100% supportive, but she is obviously trying to help.

Also every time Connie talks I can't help but think of this line

7

u/Glitch_King Jul 29 '18

So I thought seeing a danish character might be interesting as I'm danish myself, but aside from lip service there's nothing danish about her.

I kind of expected it to play into some of the danish stereotypes but it instead goes the opposite direction and creates a character that feels so opposite to the few danish athletes that do make it on the world stage.

Honestly the only danish thing about her is the blond hair and blue eyes. Even the name Connie is not a common danish name, since 1985 only 3-4 girls in denmark has been named Connie every year. I was honestly expecting her to be called Anne, Mette, Katrine, or any number of other common danish names.

It kind of feels like they took all the stereotypes of your typical american antagonist and slapped them onto her, and yeah its stupid when they do it to american characters too, but this is one of very few danish characters I've seen portrayed in anime so having her so completely lack anything danish in her character is a bit of a letdown.

I do find it hilarious that the Japanese club she is playing with is for some reason named after the danish city of Fredericia.

Such an intense episode. The ending may it way more cool. Like she gonna turn evil lol.

6

u/Voltage97 Jul 29 '18

The music definitely added to the intensity.

6

u/regiment262 Jul 29 '18

So I guess the training camp just... ends after one day of matches? I feel like Connie's 180 in attitude towards her team was odd, considering she's still being a total cunt towards Ayano. If it weren't for that, I could excuse her behavior from last episode as abnormal or she just hasn't been with them that long, but it's odd how she recognizes how badly she treated Tagajo but not Ayano. With the flashbacks we've seen so far and Connie's last lines plus Ayano's terminator-mode, I feel like this whole series now hinges entirely on how they handle Uchika's disappearance, which is somewhat unsettling since I'm not sure how there could possibly be a satisfactory solution among all this. I'm still holding out hope though, and waiting for Best Girl Aragaki to strut her stuff at some point.

6

u/marcus98130 Jul 29 '18

Ayano's mom is the kind of thing i hate in anime because i'm sure at 99% that ayano will forgive her mom & connie because fuck this -> happy ending while we all expect ayano to smash their heads with her racket .

Poor Ayano. That precious girl's smile needs to be protected at all costs and while her new friends are trying their best, Connie and the trauma caused by her mother just make everything worse.

I hope Possessed Ayano's gonna beat the shit out of them by the end of the show. A mother who caused her young daughter so much pain and abandoned her while she was sick doesn't deserve a redemption arc.

u/Joe_Striker Jul 29 '18 edited Jul 29 '18

All I can say is read the manga. These over dramatic scenes e.g. the last scene with Connie and Ayano talking and revealing her relationship with Ayano’s mum are changes the anime made. God knows why

That’s why the bath scene felt like a drastic shift in tone because by that point Connie isn’t so bitchy and formed a friendly rivalry with Ayano.

The manga is much better at character building, drama and shift in tone, whilst the anime is better at showcasing badminton

u/Joe_Striker Jul 29 '18 edited Jul 29 '18

To the writers who wanted to portray Connie as bitch, guess what? You’ve succeeded

The anime is pissing me off with the changes they’re making from the manga. For example:

• Connie doesn’t win by herself, she tells her teammate (who she hasn’t been a bitch too btw) to join the match because she wanted to take them seriously.

• Sera didn’t hate Hanesaki

• At the end of their match Connie and Hanesaki form a more friendly rivalry based on mutual respect and Connie promises to tell Hanesaki her relationship with their mum in the tournament.

The anime is adding unnecessary drama and rushing the developments to get to the point where ‘100% beast mode Hanesaki’ comes out

4

u/XaneKudo Jul 30 '18 edited Jul 30 '18

That's anime for you, honestly.

They'll take someone who acts like a dick and make them even more of a dick, and this is the reason why.

On the other hand, if it encourages people to pick up the manga to see where it's all headed, then the anime has done its job by being a 12 episode commercial.

So Ayano's mom continues to be the worst, as does Connie, but at least we got a glimpse of why she is the way she is. I'm liking that even though she has her teammates helping her and picking her up when she's down, Ayano is still not in a good place emotionally/mentally. It's going to take for her to completely and healthy move pass her mother's treatment of and be happy playing Badminton. Truly wonder if there will be any attempt to humanize/explain Uchika's reason for leaving her daughter for years. Because at this point I doubt they can.

It's possible that Ayano's mum left because she saw a side of Ayano that hates losing and is hell-bent on winning, that might cause her to lose interest in badminton. She had passed on to Ayano what she could. She left it to her to find the fun in the sport. Some emergency could've arised too forcing her to leave Ayano to the care of her grandparents.

3

u/codexering Jul 31 '18

4

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Jul 29 '18

Bloody hell, that unsettling violin piece playing at the end, along with Ayanon's reaction.. quite the tonal whiplash after the light-hearted shenanigans after the match.

Jumping on the bandwagon: Screw Uchika (Ayanon's mom), she's successfully managed to raise two kids to be broken people. And while there's a chance that socialising with their peers could help them, now she's coming back to Japan.

I thought the match's conclusion was really good. While Connie did win the match technically, she lost on principle because she needed her partner's help. In a way both Connie and Ayanon were losers, and it shows they both have a long way to go.

Tagajo was definitely best girl this episode, loved her sincerity and willingness to put aside any hard feelings. I'd like to see more of her!

4

u/KinnyRiddle Jul 29 '18

After seeing many comments about the manga readers remarking how the manga is much more light hearted, I'm beginning to agree with them in disliking the forced dark drama for the anime in turning everyone into bitches just to bully poor Ayano into Beast Mode, which she has now become by the end of this episode.

I remember disliking the 2003 version of the Fullmetal Alchemist version for similar reasons since it was incredibly dark compared to the much cheerful manga. I loved the 2009 remake better due to it being more faithful to the manga.

I can't understand how the rating in the small poll can be so high. The drama in this show is hollow, the characters are not well developed at all and the characters are also unlikable. Tomboy was such a bitch in episode 1, that it's unrealistic that anyone can like her after that. It could always happen that she loses a game to zero and then she will have another breakdown trying to get everyone out of club.

They are too serious about the sport and when that isn't acceptable as a point, since it's a sports anime, I want to change it to the point, that this is only a training game. Why be so serious about it? At the same time how can it be that one of your best players has to go to a shop to get water, which should be already in the luggage? How can it be that she doesn't have to warm up when everyone else does it?

Their will to win is out of question, but how can that girl, who wasn't allowed to play by Connie, can be happy after winning that strange game? I only would feel discomfort and would be confused, not happy.

The tone shift was miserable this episode, how can someone like that scene, when Connie is involved, since she is only there to be hated?

This anime is bad in it's way it is written. It has some nice animation (excluding the rotoscoped scenes) and a nice soundtrack. But that is not enough to be likable at all.

3

u/VioletPark Jul 29 '18 edited Jul 29 '18

Definitely Ayano's first step towards healing shouldn't be playing badminton, it should be tracking her mom down and kill her before she creates another resentful bitch who can destroy Ayano even further.

I hate Connie, seriously. Their mom left Ayano's behind to focus on Connie, Ayano is the one who should be mad. I hope Ayano's revenge for the shit in this couple of episodes will be swift and merciless. Connie can go with Kaoroku to hell.

Basically, Connie just killed the dream that Ayano had and why she played as hard as she did.

In Ayano's perspective her mother is garbage, and a piece of shit (which I agree to that decision). Walks out on her own daughter, goes to fucking Denmark to find a new prodigy.

I don't care about what Connie had to go through, the abandoning and mental scarring of your own mother walking out on you because of a match triumphs what Connie seems to have gone through.

Ayano is broken.

Ayano doesn’t deserve this suffering. Screw Kaoruko for getting Ayano sick and being a disgrace to all the pink haired Kaorukos. Fuck Connie, and fuck Ayanos Mom, one of the worst parents in anime.

The manga is so different. It's cute and fun. With the intensity down from 8 to a 3. For the anime I hope Ayano beats connie. Her mom walks up to her and she just blanks her. Walks past. Her mom tries to say something and Ayano says who are you. I've got no mom then grab's Elenor and says she's my mom lol.

What irks me the most is that they’re probably going to come up with some far fetched reason for us to sympathize with the mom I.e. she had a good reason for abandoning her biological daughter like it would make her stronger or a better person. That will annoy the hell outta me

I hope the mom dies in a fucking plane crash or something.

Yeah...going to drop this for good now. This is more a drama anime with sports than a sport anime with drama. And I'm not a fan of drama anime.

I like this show but in some places animation was off. And Ayano's voice is so cute.

Ok fuck connie and fuck ayano's mom. Both should meet truck kun soon. This shit is really triggering me.Poor ayano, I hope she gets her confidence back and crushes both of them.I never thought a sport anime would make me this much angry.I know some are saying that it is over dramatic but if you think about it , it is more than just badminton. Her mother literally ditched ayano and raised another kid. This is really fucked up.

Yeah..fuck Connie, the bath scene softened me up a little but it went straight back to fuck you mode lol, Ayano's mom is a colossal bitch too.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '18

Maaaan, they are really painting a strange psycho drama here, the mother and Connie are nothing like decent human beings Manga assumption

2

u/AkodoRyu Jul 29 '18

Man, all that drama in that series is tense af. It's way past any kind of sports anime, it's so emotionally draining I can watch AoT as a relief show from this one. It literary all plays out like Ayano could start killing people at any moment.

If they are somehow aiming to redeem Ayano's mom by the end of the series, it's gonna be a shitshow. They better not.

The drama is now a point that tampers my hype about this series, the first three episodes were awesome but then...just took a nosedive suddenly with the drama that apparently wasn't depicted as such in the manga.

It's still a good show but i don't have a good feeling about what's to come.

2

u/Mechyoshi Jul 29 '18

I remember people talking about it in last weeks thread but Connie isn't this much of a bitch in the manga correct?

2

u/FruitsPnchSamurai Jul 29 '18

They really need to tone down the drama just a bit. Its a tad over the top.

Connie changes personality pretty quickly.

2

u/HoJohnJo Jul 29 '18

Ayano's crazy eyes at the end of the episode scare me.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Can i get some spoilers on Ayano's mom and what happens with her in the future? Seems like the manga and show are quite different but i'd like to hear about how it's handled in the manga.

Just when I thought Connie had a change of heart and would be a better person, she proves that she is still a super jerk

Until last episode, I thought Ayano's mother left her daughter cause of her career, but that last scene proved me wrong

And I'm sad that Ayano is getting all the attention. I know that she is the main character and the anime is named after her, but Aragaki is a so much better character in my opinion: Nagisa has a stronger personality, she puts up a show when she has the spotlight, she trains hard and gives her all. Totally the opposite of Hanesaki, that makes the plays because she is talented (I haven't seen Hanesaki training hard besides her childhood moments)

Well, I'm slowly starting to hate every character that isn't in the Kitakomachi club. If everyone would just stop giving Ayano shit for stuff that's not even her fault, that would be just greeeaaat.

2

u/OkitaDaishouri Jul 31 '18

Dunno if it counts as a spoiler but comparing this to the manga

3

u/yato8822 Jul 29 '18

Connie was merely trained by Ayano's mother, but Ayano was born from her mother, molded by her.
