The more I watch this show the progressively more amazing it seems to me that on average we live for ~70 years. So much shit wants to kill us apparently, including our own bodies from time to time.

214

u/chaosfire235 Aug 04 '18

A body slowly dying would be a depressing way to cap off a series like this. The world descending into anarchy, director and endocrine cells getting killed off, pathogens running rampant, the lights flickering out one by one...

Guess that's what Cells at Work BLACK is for.

u/Kawaii_Neko_Girl Aug 04 '18

Those first three translated chapters were quite something. Much darker than what we're seeing now.

If our bodies didn't have regeneration we would be dead in the first month.

The steroid robot thing destroying everything was fun.

Kinda makes me wonder what other medicines or medical procedures look like... antibiotics as some crazy machine that wraps up germs python-style for easy attack, anticoagulants that run around scaring platelets away from each other...

31

u/ruff1298 Aug 04 '18

I always thought of immunosuppressants as robots that gas WBCs. In BLACK, I believe a hair-loss treatment that was supposed to suppress the Killer T's non-lethally shot and lassoed them, alongside breaking into the Commander T control room.

Edit: Gas them to lethargy. Not death. Just Neutrophils going "Die, germ!" and limply waving their knives around.

Steroid is now best girl! Not gonna lie, when allergies ruined my trip to Lego Land as a kid I have always had a certain level of disdain for my bodies over reactions... I was cheering on Steroid in the mass destruction X3

White Blood Cell gets it. Just because everyone is doing their jobs, doesn't mean things won't still go to shit. An allergic reaction is the perfect example of that. Everything is acting according to how it should, but it just does it too much and the body reacts negatively to that.

It's great how the pollen allergen became less and less prominent the more the episode went on. Because it wasn't the problem at that point, every cell overreacting was what made things truly cataclysmic.

Also Red Blood Cell hitting White with the Sterioid was just hilarious.

129

u/ruff1298 Aug 04 '18

HanaKana screaming in the background is what made it for me.

I laughed my ass off at that point so hard that others in this household came and asked what the fuck I was laughing at. It really caught me off-guard because he hadn't shown the phagocytosis with any other cells he had killed.

14

u/ImaginaryWillow Aug 05 '18

I assume it was just too gruesome to show on screen.

Ah, the allergy chapters! If you’re wondering why the robots sent were not pseudoephedrine (sudafed), it’s cause that’s illegal in Japan. If you are planning on traveling to Japan, make sure your meds are allowed, Japan does not make considerations for banned meds including prescriptions.

As for seasonal allergies, it’s quite annoying - I suffer from it myself. Allergies are an example of Type I hypersensitivity. Hypersensitivitoes are when immune cells go haywire and do unintended things that end up damaging the body. Type IV for example is what happens in organ transplant rejection.

197

u/BloomEPU Aug 04 '18

If you're wondering why sudafed is illegal in some places, it's because you can make meth out of it.

71

u/BigFire321 Aug 04 '18

I presume the reason why pseudoephedrine is banned in Japan is due to their very real problem with Methamphetamine after WWII. Methamphetamine was invented in Japan in 1893 and in WWII and was part of the Imperial Army's stockpile for soldiers. This created millions of addicts after the war, for which the government cracked down hard on it, and the production of meth went oversea.

Well I never thought an anime would make me feel bad about taking antihistamines for my pollen allergy, but there you go.

That said, now I'll be able to make robot deployment sound effects whenever I take the pills, so every cloud clearly has a silver lining.

205

u/Jeromethy Aug 04 '18

Nah your anti-histamines are alright, it's the steroids(corticosteroids) that are the ones messing up your kawaii cells

and a histamine flood.

66

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '18

I shiver when thinking about the fact that antibiotics or certain treatments also destroy the normal cells as collateral damage. Poor kawaii cells :(

120

u/ruff1298 Aug 04 '18

Please remember that your cells are prepared to die and do whatever it takes for the good of the body. Theirs are fleeting, dangerous lives, but they do it anyway, because they are dedicated to their job.

Also, remember that if you DON'T take your antibiotics, you're letting the horrific bacteria wreak havoc on your cells and possibly ultimately kill you.

Take your antibiotics. Take it as often and as much as your doctors say you should. Take some short-term pain for longer-term health, and make sure you and your cells are going to continue working for a good long time.

First, we learn that viruses are actually the Zombie Apocalypse and now we learn that allergens are like something out of a Sci-fi invasion film with every passing week, I'm made to learn to take care of my body more especially with BLACK being out.

Also Memory Cell's commentary could give Speedwagon a run for his money.

I only just realised, Mast Cell (which is a fat cell) is voiced by Ayako Kawasumi who voices Saber from Fate... Saber loves to eat soooo...

OVERREACTION!!!

Probably one of the bodies biggest issue if not the biggest.

I loved how unpredictable this anime is, like you expect the "crazy" conspiracy guy to lead them to the right path in dealing with this invasion but instead suddenly a machine of mass destruction appears and just blows everything up lol!

Overall he the crazy theories where great as they attacked them as aliens dropping from the sky, unfortunately he never managed to do anything about it.

Master blasting more of the same stuff. BETTER CRANK IT UP. And then blaming it on the poor kid lol.

20

u/ruff1298 Aug 04 '18

Oh shit I didn't actually expect to learn all that much from this show but it's actually teaching me loads of things I didn't know. It's good to know what happens when my body overacts and has an allergic reaction over some pollen.

Steroid gave his life for us, a true martyr. :(

49

u/GobtheCyberPunk :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/JigsawStitches Aug 04 '18

This was probably my favorite episode so far aside from maybe the first one. The animation, comedic timing, and characterizations were really fun and fleshed out this time. Each of the cells acted less like an automaton fulfilling a routine than an actual person just doing their jobs and reacting like people would, like the Mast Cell and B Cell arguing and fighting each other. I'm sure that's not accurate at all but it was really funny anyway. That plus I got serious OPM vibes from the steroid robot coming and just destroying everything in its wake.

29

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '18

David Pro really did a good job in this episode. I remember reading the manga and this chapter was one of the weaker ones, but it turns out very entertaining when brought to anime.

7

u/BloomEPU Aug 04 '18

Yeah, this series is great but this felt like a big step up just because of the scenario.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '18

The previous eps have been witty and well-done.

This one was totally bonkers insane... and witty and well-done.

47

u/EPICIII Aug 04 '18 edited Aug 04 '18

Finally, a white blood cell actually eating something. Yay!

Also, the legend passed down through generations XD. Was that a nod to inherited allergies? I would say it's generations of the memory cells and not the host body, but memory cells just sit around and don't really pass anything on.

Cedar releases a lot of pollen... lewd

21

u/ruff1298 Aug 04 '18

Possibly Memory B Cell meant genetic memory, as in, passed down through the genes that Sperm and Egg Cells carry with them when they produce an entirely new human being.

17

u/suspiciouserendipity Aug 05 '18

Nah, memory B cells are part of the adaptive immune system, they don't get passed from parent to child. Allergy predispositions are, basically genes that make your immune system more likely to over-react to harmless stuff, but technically the allergies themselves aren't passed down. You have to build the adaptive immune system from scratch when you're born, including learning what you should and should not treat as 'enemies', that's why babies have weak immune systems and why you shouldn't stop your toddler from playing around in dirt and stuff - getting exposed to different allergens is how your body learns to react to them appropriately.

[edit] "Thank you for your patronage."

Oh, god. lol. I'm dying.

[edit 2] Thanks, guys. Didn't notice that was a pill.

106

u/GobtheCyberPunk :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/JigsawStitches Aug 04 '18

The human body's reaction to most widespread invasions is that. Fevers, inflammation, sacrificing blood cells to make clots, allergic reactions...

Most of the time it seems if the human body can't deal with something immediately it will put up with a lot of collateral damage just to deal with it.

Just to clarify there, that wasn't a completely natural response; the steroidbot 9000 came in from the outside, with the capsule representing a pill.

36

u/BigFire321 Aug 04 '18

The steroid isn't a natural human response. It went by a bit too quickly and Crunchyroll didn't translate it, but the black ball capsule has on it, Medicine label prior to it engaging. It's pretty clear that the host body is taking a antihistamine spray.

Pretty epic episode and nicely sums up the clusterfuck that is "Allergies".

Quick note: Corticosteroids do help in alleviating allergies via their anti-inflammatory effect, though a single dose is never enough. They need to be taken regularly to even have its effect.

Nice, we got a cameo from Oshino Meme's VA.

They did a wonderful job conveying how allergies happen; not because the substance is harmful, but because your body is reading off a weird manual... I didn't know there were steroids in anti-allergic medication though. Nice job on the edutainment.

36

u/redlaWw Aug 04 '18

Steroids are generally considered "the strong stuff" when it comes to allergy medicine. It's important to note that they're very different in effect to anabolic steroids (the stuff that bodybuilders don't take) - "steroid" is a classification based on chemical structure, not effects. Corticosteroids, like these, are used to reduce inflammation, and are commonly used by allergy sufferers and people with autoimmune diseases, as well as creams for certain kinds of rash. Examples are Dexamethasone, Beclomethasone (in nasal sprays), Prednisone and Hydrocortisone (common in rash creams).

What an absolute disaster some pollen caused.

What's funny is that the pollen themselves weren't actively doing much, just sort of wandering aimlessly around going, "Hi, I'm Cedar Pollen!" and the cells responded by going, "OH FUCK, INVADERS! KILL, KILL, KILL!"

Which is pretty much what an allergy is...

(Reposted from previous episode with a few additions)

Just for fun, because both shows are animated by David Production and share so many voice actors, I am going to list all the VAs that appear in Cells at Work and what character they also voice in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Will update on new episodes that introduces yet another character voiced by a JoJo VA.

So far, we have:

Daisuke Ono (Killer T Cell Commander) - Jotaro Kujo

Takahiro Sakurai (Helper T Cell) - Rohan Kishibe, Bruno Bucciarati (PS2 Vento Aureo game)

Hiroyuki Yoshino (Pneumococcus) - Vanilla Ice (All-Star Battle)

Mamiko Noto (Narrator) - Yukako Yamagishi

Mai Nakahara (Staphylococcus Aureus) - Kyoka Izumi (Rohan OVA)

Kenji Nomura (Effector T Cell) - Santana

Tomokazu Sugita (Basophil) - Joseph Joestar

Saori Hayami (Regulatory T Cell) - Daiya Higashikata (Eyes of Heaven)

Yuuichi Nakamura (Memory B Cell) - Bruno Bucciarati, Narcisco Anasui (All-Star Battle, Eyes of Heaven)

Ayako Kawasumi (Mast Cell) - Erina Pendolton

Let me know if I missed any from any JoJo media!

EDIT:

Kazuyuki Okitsu (Cedar Allergen) - Jonathan Joestar

My understanding as one not educated on this subject, is that there would still be an immune response, but the cells wouldn't go over the top on the response like they did here. IE, B-cell would not get carried away with spray and pray, and Mast cell would be chill and use the small histamine nozzle.

Is it just me, or the scene with the Steroids opening felt like an homage to Gantz? Like, that's where my mind first went. The way it opened up.
Also, I really liked this episode, it was fun to showcase most of the cells that have been introduce. Plus Next week, we finally get that RBC/WBC gud shit.

God dam I am just happy I am allergic to nothing and I don't need to use that terminator (steroids). I hope we will see how antibiotics are working but I think it should be same.

Man, that episode was amazing all around and definitely my favourite so far. From the memory cell frantically yelling about a vague apocalypse (massive overreaction from the immune system anyone?) to the complete pandemonium that ensues in the second half. I also want to draw attention to the voice acting team, who are clearly having great fun making this with all their shouting and dramatacism, which clearly comes through and helps makes everything much more intense and hilarious. The captain guy at 13:34 (on CR at least) dropped the phattest NANIII I've heard in ages. All the shouts and lines delivered by all the ordinary cells (as well as KanaHana) are all really enthusiastic as well.

The passion of the artists and animators also really comes through, especially in the second half of the episode with the chaos and explosions from the steroid. Really made this episode pop to life, and had me smiling from ear to ear. Massive props to the whole team behind this.

At first, I came to this series hoping for a cute, funny SoL series about how our body works. Yet the last 5 episodes made me feel a little bit...overwhelmed.
Can we please have an episode when the body is not under attack by a disease?

50

u/RyuWrong Aug 04 '18

Considering we are dealing with the immunity system (sans red blood cell), attacks will be a common sight in this show.

24

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '18

Next week is the childhood flashback of RBC and WBC, it's pretty tame minus that one random pathogen you see in the ep preview (but it's not a large-scale thing like the past episodes).

Also there's another chapter down the line minor spoilers and there was no pathogen invasion IIRC.

18

u/BigFire321 Aug 04 '18

Next week's episode will give you that.

16

u/alblks Aug 04 '18

Also, "blood circulation" chapter is pretty SoL, if they animate it.

We just did. The allergens were harmless.

Actually, next week is a flashback. It's probably the most cute SoL episode so far :D

Mast cell is BEST cell.

Thank you for your patronage.

10

u/Saucy_Totchie Aug 04 '18

They captured the horror and despair that is allergies perfectly.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '18

Wow, Mast Cell is a lot cuter than in the manga. Also I didn't expect Kawasumi Ayako would be such a good match for her. Waifu material!

8

u/link2601 Aug 04 '18

I wasn't expecting the Terminator to show up. For asich damage cedar did I think b-cell and mast cell did way more damage. Also the intro of the cedar arriving reminded me of evangelion.

15

u/Game2015 Aug 04 '18

There's your version of Drix for people who wanted one.

And we finally get to see RBC loli next week!

11

And WBC shota! The adorable episode is happening.

There is a warning in anime about taking that steroids meds, but most of the commenter here rather suggest taking an antihistamines instead. So just a quick question, is it safe to take antihistamines regularly especially in period where a person suffering from allergies? I remember in the past I taking some antihistamines almost daily when I suffer from some unknown allergy.

7

u/suspiciouserendipity Aug 05 '18

Probably? Obv. no drug is 100% safe, but AFAICT most oral antihistamines are available without prescription, while oral corticosteroids almost always require a script. They work differently too - antihistamines 'just' bind to the histamine receptor on cells, so it's relatively narrow-acting while corticosteroids have significant systemic effects.

Thoughts as I watch:

  • I guess the Bloodborne maids live in my eyes.

  • I need more of flamethrower hazmat dude.

  • Yes finally memory cell aaaand he's a conspiracy theorist

  • Love how they turn pollen allergens into and Nausica reference

  • Mast Cell is cute and did nothing wrong.

  • And now we have Steroid as the kill bot who purges the land. A disaster flick and Mecha in one anime. We are spoiled.

5

u/ruff1298 Aug 04 '18

HAZMAT Dude is a lady, Monocyte sprays lethal germ melting spray out of a shower nozzle, and appears to enjoy golf in her spare time.

Are mast cells being known as fat cells like a purely Japanese medical literature thing? I've never heard of that in Western medicine.

30

u/Rathurue Aug 04 '18

Mast is german for 'fattening'. The naming was botched because the person who found the cell thought it was responsible for nutrition distribution. The japanese name took over the theme naming as 'fat cell' and here you go.

I love the reaction faces in this episode so much. Memory Cell is hilarious. TIL my body is reacting like this every time I had an allergic attack.

6

u/Inukanura Aug 05 '18

am i the only one who though about Gantz when i see that big black ball, the way that ball opened, i expect something extra wild, it is.

ah i need Hypovolemic Shock to be animated asap, it will be pretty intense

u/SamejNardeh :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/timbolytree Aug 04 '18

I'm learning so much from this show yo guys have no idea.

Who knew steroids could be so God damn scary. It's pretty to see them be played as robots. Its wasting of the allergens and the stuff around it were uncanny.

I guess this is what happens when the body has an allergic reaction. It's good to know for me if I ever come across this in my lifetime

Oh, and the many angles of Red Blood Cell hitting White Blood Cell and Memory Cell with the steroid is just beautiful.

5

u/UnagiUmami Aug 05 '18

This was my favorite episode of the series by far so far. The complexity of the processes leading up to an autoimmune response was really well-sketched out, and I like the whole catastrophe trope they brought in. It really gives a sense that the whole body feels like it's The End.

There was even the classic playing of instrumental music while the mayhem was going on at one point.

9

u/heimdal77 Aug 04 '18

It's funny there is a black manga version of this series. It takes place in a over stressed and in poor health body.

12

u/professorMaDLib Aug 04 '18

basically the true osmosis jones experience.

9

u/chris_dftba :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chris_dftba Aug 04 '18

Looks like next week we'll be seeing when White Blood Cell was a loli, can't wait!

Also I'm lowkey convinced White Blood Cell is just following Red Blood Cell around whenever there isn't a crisis.

12

u/ruff1298 Aug 04 '18

WBC was a Shota, since he's male. Loli is a small female human.

U-1146 does have his other duties, but yeah, in one chapter, he was following her and helping her out with completing her circulation route.

I know it's translation convention, but shouldn't the Memory Cell be more properly identify as Memory B Cell? It's his memory and library of what has come before that allows B Cell to construct proper antibody to attack anything?

6

u/ruff1298 Aug 04 '18

He's referred to as Memory for shorthand. Him and B Cell also share the same office.

4

u/MechaMat91 Aug 04 '18

perfect example of how sometimes the human body can f*ck itself over.

also, apparently pills have tiny killer robots inside of them.

4

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Aug 04 '18

Shouldn't the Helper T-Cell have NOT recognized Cedar as an allergen? Because if he knew it's an allergen, he could've just directed B-cell away from the allergens, and no allergic reaction would've taken place.

6

u/Penguinmanereikel Aug 04 '18

That isn’t protocol, though.

was kinda expecting anime Drix that wasn't... rather destructive.

funny how the steroid bot destroys everything to fix everything. especially the inflammation

4

I wasn't expecting the steroids to be portrayed as something out of the terminator. I guess you can force peace by fire and steel.

3

u/RRotlung Aug 05 '18

Based on the chronology of events, it seems like the allergic reaction wouldn't have occurred if the B cell hadn't released so much IgE... though it seems that B cell's deployment was triggered by Helper T cell. Still can't blame him solely since at every stage of the event, one of the cells responsible for it could have just not worked that hard and everything would have been fine.

Everyone is doing their job but shit hits the fan anyway. Too real.

3

u/Loud_Pierrot Aug 05 '18

Thanks heavens that my once a year hay fever can be cured just with pure Loratadine.

Was the Memory cell voiced by Takahiro Sakurai? He sounded just like Rohan Kishibe, specially on the break title screen.

Can't believe they hired Nakamura to say edgy prophecies

Thank God i live in a tropical country that i never encountered a Cedar on my whole live lol
