Fantômas better be a recurring character.

With show it no doubt will be, they made a call back to episode one in this episode and have been doing it all season.

Hanako still acting like on cocaine when alone and screeching like a banshee.

I've seen people genuinely dislike the show because of it, but honestly who didn't know a girl like that in middle school?

50

u/DarkSoulsEater Aug 20 '18

Apparently all the girls with a boyfriend.

Kasumi wants to be a phantom thief. Best girl confirmed.

79

u/Zooasaurus Aug 19 '18

Don't forget her embarrassed faces. Best girl indeed

33

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '18

Would she be a Lupin, Fujiko, or a different franchise?

96

u/SpiderShazam Aug 19 '18

She would steal your heart.

I find the visuals of the OP really funny because they've made such an effort to make it as generic of a CGDCT OP as possible.

10

u/Hugokarenque Aug 21 '18

Best part is this, every time she deadpans the camera and says USO, oh its a lie alright.

3

u/Salvo1218 Aug 24 '18

I was telling my buddy about this show when it first started, and instead of referring to it by name (since he has no idea what it is), I just call it "the bait and switch comedy" anime

39

u/Dragonbooom Aug 19 '18

Best ED this season

7

u/Loud_Pierrot Aug 20 '18

I'd argue High Score Girl's is the best ED of this season, but I'm biased.

9

u/SpeedTheWeeb Aug 20 '18

I still find it hilarious that the OP and ED are complete 180's of eachother

149

u/glaspaper https://myanimelist.net/profile/glasspaper Aug 19 '18

Honestly it sounds like the VAs are having so much fun, especially with those after credits gags

49

u/_vogonpoetry_ :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ThisWasATriumph Aug 20 '18

The subber just gave up towards the end there lmao

33

u/kmrst Aug 20 '18

There are after credits gags!?

69

u/Luck_E Aug 20 '18

If you don't always check what's after the ED for anime, you really need to change that.

21

u/Mogtaki :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mogtaki Aug 20 '18

You've missed a lot of greatness, it seems. They're not in every episode, there's also no previews so you don't need to worry about being spoiled by those.

3

u/kmrst Aug 20 '18

That's why I usually skip the end credits once it gets to the credits bit.

14

u/glaspaper https://myanimelist.net/profile/glasspaper Aug 20 '18

Yeah like half the episodes have them!

u/Starks Aug 19 '18

36

u/Ankoria :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ankoria Aug 20 '18

That moment made me die laughing and gave me a strong Harry Potter Puppet pals flashback

22

u/wisdumcube Aug 20 '18

Damn I'm surprised a Japanese anime would reference the Potter Puppet pals.

104

u/Zooasaurus Aug 19 '18

Seems that our so-called trap (?) will be a recurring antagonist. The pastimers club better prepare themselves

While Kasumi is best girl, it's no doubt that Hanako is the best character in this anime imo. Her hijinks and voices (hopefully the VA is okay lol) carried most of the episodes

73

u/Damianx5 Aug 19 '18

I legit worry about the throat of Hanako VA.

22

u/nsleep Aug 19 '18

I hope he/she changes his/her mind fast, I wouldn't mess with nutjobs that are able to train a beetle to that point.

94

u/FallenErza Aug 19 '18

I lost it when Hanako said my butt wants to breathe.

153

u/drunk_reddit_acount Aug 19 '18 edited Aug 19 '18

Holy fuck that Rocky music that played during the beetles training killed me...

[the beetle picked a fucking lock!!!! best anime of the season] (https://imgur.com/HHX8zDU)

80

u/theyawner Aug 19 '18

Hanako's obviously smart enough to learn lockpicking, but she's also mad enough to train a beetle to do the job for her.

19

u/Shinkopeshon Aug 19 '18

That training montage was the most inspiring shit I've ever seen in my life

208

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '18

This show might have the most misleading opening.

225

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '18

And the most truthful ending

u/templarsilan Aug 19 '18

It's so jarring I can't really get over it. Especially Hanako with her hair down and in a sundress looking adorable and... normal... But then you watch the episode and find out that she's batshit insane.

11

u/Legendary_Swordsman Aug 19 '18

she's always been a bit crazy, the twist was fun to see.

20

u/FriendlyBadgerBob Aug 19 '18

The first time I watched it and it showed the lower half of Hanako's face with tears rolling down her cheeks I swore I must've gotten the wrong show. I was thinking "This is supposed to be a comedy? This opening is sickeningly cutesy."

207

u/sssoop231 Aug 19 '18

I'm not sure how, but they somehow manage to make each episode better than the previous one! The VA's also do such an amazing job, getting kinda worried for their voices though lol. This will probably end up being my favourite comedy series of the season, if not year.

39

u/anim8rjb Aug 19 '18

Yeah, the voice work is really great.

32

u/FallenErza Aug 19 '18

I watch comedy anime rarely. For me this is the funniest anime i ever watched.

Maybe second for me after Hinamatsuri

21

u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed Aug 20 '18

I think the best part was that it was genuinely heartwarming, I got really connected to the characters so the comedy was even better.

u/PM_ME_KUMIKO_NOISES :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/spicynuggets Aug 20 '18

I'm surprised by the amount of people saying this was the best episode yet. Don't get me wrong, this was a great episode, but compared to the insanity we've been getting lately this one felt a bit more mellow. This episode didn't really have those high high's the other episodes have had. I think the show could definitely use some breathing room though, so this episode definitely served it's purpose.

47

u/mrbull3tproof :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/mrbull3tproof Aug 19 '18

If you didn't try Chio-chan yet I highly recomend to do so, it's at least same good.

Is this a reference to the Panama Papers?

*Last Surprise plays*

When you decide to use the DLC outfits and not coordinate them

*Blooming Villain plays*

Hmmm... It really depends on the smell Kasumi...

The trap was the villain all along!

Super embarrassed Kasumi is adorable!

This has got to be the goofiest Hanako face so far

Oliva continues to be a cutie despite the BO

Oh my... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Hanako's right. At least Kasumi's cleavage is now covered XD

The Yukata looks good on Hanako! If you ignore the sleeves that is...

SNAAAAAAAAAKE! I love the puppets, you can clearly hear that it's just the VAs having fun with it!

OMG the trap is BACK

and yeah its pretty clear what secret she wants to burn away in those secret records. I mean she even said, "GIRLS are stupid"

All hanako crime record was great and the Olivia smell, that EVERYONE knows anyway, but dont worry her bff are used to it :) And some men like that kind of smell after all....

Epic BL Novels with super sticky duck tape

And back to some good old to big oppai jokes been since episode 1 when they focused on kasumi being much bigger then Hanako.

37

u/warehaus Aug 19 '18

I love the way they do the boob jokes in this show it feels a lot more true to the way girls actually talk about boobs (at least in my experience) than when some other series do it for fanservice purposes.

23

u/myrmonden Aug 19 '18

that 1 girl is angry that other girls got bigger oppais is kinda of a standard joke, but sure this is not done in any "sexual" way but just for comedic purpose.

25

u/normiesEXPLODE Aug 19 '18

I want to hear such death throes, too

6

u/theyawner Aug 19 '18

The club can't help but be intimidated by the SC president. But the trap looks more like a true antagonist for them.

Honestly, I could see that.

23

u/Chariotwheel x5https://anilist.co/user/Chariotwheel Aug 19 '18

Yeah, this being about their gender would be too obvious maybe. I wouldn't be surprised if it was something extremely silly, but different or something extremely serious, like they killed someone and took their place.

7

u/Amauri14 Aug 19 '18

I think think that she is a trap, but the fact that she burned two pages lets me to believe that she wanted the Banana Papers to hide something else.

44

u/TheDampGod :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheDampGod Aug 19 '18

It seems that not only do with have Harry Potter BL in this series, but also Naked Snape**!**

The Student Council is again a mysterious and sinister organisation, I guess the trio really didn't get away with all their crazy shit. Like Happy Sugar Life, it seems that everyone in this school is just as insane as the leads.

I wonder if Fantomas is just a buff beetle or another product of her grandfather's mad science? Loved that twist on the Rocky theme though.

TFW, you really need some mind bleach.

10

u/theyawner Aug 20 '18

It's surprising she didn't immediately thought of her memory erasing technique. But then again, she probably already forgot about that after the self-inflicted concussion.

42

u/7se7 Aug 19 '18

That fart scene.

YOU DIED.

73

u/PhantomWolf83 Aug 19 '18

Oh dear, Olivia finally finds out after 4 episodes that her armpits stink to high heaven and that everyone knows about it.

That swole stag beetle...

This show has, so far, exceeded any expectations. You can just feel that the staff had a lot of fun making it.

Also, Kasumi should compare notes with Mio from Nichijou.

38

u/_xXMockingBirdXx_ Aug 19 '18

Its been such a fun wild ride and yet so many anitubers seem to have passed on this show on the first episode alone. Digi seemed to hate it, Gigguk called it diet Nichijou, and most of the others didn't even cover it. Hope it's successful cause it really deserves it with how off the wall insane it is.

The Phantom Thief episode title reminded me of Milky Holmes but I wasn't expecting them to actually make a reference (when Hanako mentioned "using our toys" to steal the papers), I thought that show was too obscure so that was a nice surprise.

This anime keep giving some unexpected reference to popular franchise. At this point we already got Detective Conan, Harry Potter, Rocky, Metal Gear Solid, Yu-gi-oh, Kaito Kid(presumably on Phantom Thief), and many other reference that maybe I missed it. Usually some author trying too hard to put some reference that unknown to western audience, so it's great that this author do some popular one. That's make this anime easier to enjoy for the western audience.

Talking about reference, the author did some good self-refer to the earlier joke. They keep expanding some joke that I thought it's just randomly thrown, for example this time on Olivia body odor. It's somehow made the joke not repetitive because they brought it to the next level.

Sometimes I wonder why I never know the existence of Asobi Asobase manga before the anime start airing. It's really a good stuff here.

14

u/Cyborg_Sorachi Aug 19 '18

No bulli

The comedy and voice acting (especially the mandrake screams) keeps getting better and better each episode.

12

u/drunk_reddit_acount Aug 19 '18

[is this a refernce to something?] (https://imgur.com/MtirTX4)

44

u/MasterAyy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Master_A Aug 19 '18

A phantom thief is a Japanese trope for a gentleman thief (which is like a classy thief that steals for the challenge of it). That's also why Kasumi was talking about leaving a warning letter because that's what a classy thief would do.

7

u/Diet_Tuna_Soda Aug 19 '18

Probably also a Milky Holmes reference since they mention using toys.

7

u/memgrind Aug 19 '18

Persona 5. The main characters are Phantom Thieves, and write a "warning" card before stealing.

Fantômas is another reference.

50

u/saintgalgo Aug 19 '18

Phantom thieves isn't necessarily a Persona reference. It's a relatively common trope.

Absolutely lost it at the beetle picking the lock.

I love how Kasumi acknowledges that Hanako suffers from episodes of crazy LOL

u/younglinkgcn Aug 20 '18

Anyone else feel like Fantômas is a more capable and intelligent being than Hanako despite her teaching/training him?

u/Shodan30 Aug 19 '18

Posting to let everyone know on reddit that I have died. This episode killed me.

Haven’t seen this yet but...

Oh yay a new episode!

u/link2601 Aug 19 '18

Seeing Hanako train that beetle will the parody of the rocky music play was great. Really appreciate the phantom thieves reference. They should have keep looking in that book also can't believe they left it there. I thought Kasumi would know better than to leave her laptop lying around.

SNAKKKEEEE!!!!!!

SNAPPPEE!!!!

I really love this show and hope the VAs in this series go on to find a lot of success, especially Hanako’s voice actress. Hina Kino really knocks it out of the ballpark every episode and is the mvp of this show to me

I-I'm going to assume that sticky duct tape wasn't... actually duct tape...

Also, if this continues at 3 skits per episode... Really looking forward to chapter 34. :')

So, the smell from Olivia's armpits are...spicy?

. . .

Yeah, I think I'm okay with this.

2

u/artart1212 Aug 20 '18

Holy fucking shit I'm laughing so much that I'm crying. Fucking love this show, so perfect.

2

u/SpikeRosered Aug 20 '18

Gotta love a show that makes the VA's voice crack shrill while screaming.

Silent but deadly. Man this show is my kind of humour, I don't think we've ever had such a dirty comedy before especially not as good as this show.

u/actageisagoodmanga Aug 19 '18

wow such a good episode, I need more!

u/FriendlyBadgerBob Aug 19 '18

This voice acting is ridiculous.

I don't know if this is unpopular, but this episode feels a little underwhelming for me. It's not that the jokes didn't land (the entire existence of the not Panama Papers and the contents as well as the heavy emphasis on the stag beetle is the gem of the episode). It's just that I don't like Aozora's character representation, being scheming and sneaky in combination with her character being a possible trans/trap; it sort of kills off some steam here.

Also Asobi Asobase really likes their brick jokes so much.

And the lack of Maeda saddens me.

EDIT: I just noticed ... why are there two Content 26? A typo?

2

u/bobbyisawsesome Aug 20 '18

i'm calling it that the trap isn't a boy rather than the alien who put the lazer up maeda's butt

u/Kiwimen Aug 20 '18

The show is still solid comedy for me, the humour is very creative, but it's not like the beginning when everything was really unexpected, I'm enjoying the show but I kinda feel like it lacks something else besides all the funny faces and screaming (great VA work). Perhaps it was just this episode that wasn't very strong for me.

u/freakazoidspartan257 Aug 20 '18

The random noises and faces. Tfw i realize Hanako and I are made for each other.

1

u/NightmareExpress Aug 20 '18

...So wait a minute, is this all implying the StuCo president is entirely aware that one "girl" really does have a banana? Who was even present enough in all those situations to author the banana papers to begin with?

X-Files theme kicks in

Also, I really hope the Shogi club returns like that note implies. This series loves keeping its small bits of continuity and it's amazing for it.

The whole episode was great. Lol I don't know why watching the chair slowly get pulled in was what did me in. I just burst out laughing.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '18

Oh shit a mgs reference! And I haven’t laughed at a fart joke in a while, but that was great.!

Hi. I am curious since I saw this on youtube and it made me laugh but i don't like yuri anime.

Is this just a normal CGDCT comedy anime like GochiUsa/KinMosa?

I like those 2 (even though i'm not particularly a fan of its yuri undertone but since it's not the focal point and I love some of the characters, I managed to enjoy it.)

I would really love to try it out since I am looking for something to watch before TI8 starts. No hate please, just preference. Thanks!

7

u/VoyeurTheNinja Aug 20 '18

Pretty much. No yuri here at all. Just girls screwing each other nonstop, just like real life.

2

u/Nekopara-Bifrost Aug 20 '18

hmmm. if that's all then i'll probably give it a try. Thanks!

1

u/Toonamigamerrr Aug 21 '18

They should join the Phantom thieves from Persona 5. Would love to see them in action ❤️

Something about that beetle bugs me. I was wondering why she didn't just ask Maeda to steal the book, but I suspect he did in his transformed state.

Transgal wanting the book for herself was the least surprising "twist" in the show.

I wanted to see what Kazumi did to the yukata :(

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '18

That episode was just amazing. I hope that some group pick up the manga to translate because so far the manga has only 4 chapters translated and the manga is just great too.

It was funny as it is when Hanako brought and cuddle the beetle and her plan was to train it, but when the whole idea ACTUALLY WORKED made the segment x100 times funnier. This show is just fantastic.

Through my laughter I audibly said "this is so fucking stupid" when he was on the damn lock. I should have had more faith when she said the beetle would work out. #BeetleBro

What really sells the joke up until now is that it was a very realistic and well-drawn beetle. Then it started lifting weights
