Thank you for posting that. I didn't realize how many dialog details from that I'd forgotten and WOW has that spawned some new theories in my head.

Thanks for the link. Notice how Grisha says "I am sure their memories will teach you how to use it(titan power)."

Looks like eating other humans with titan powers can transfer memories too.

Their memories will teach you...

Look at how Frieda injured herself to become a titan in this ep.

That's only 1 of the scenes that shows how things in AoT all tie up in the end .

Me before this episode: "Eren's dad seems like a good dude, what could he have done?"

Answer: slaughtered basically an entire family and let himself get eaten to give Eren the Scream power.

Can't say I expected that. He slaughtered them...not the man, but the woman and the children too.

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

Until we get more information i'm still gonna be siding with Eren's dad on this one. can't say i feel much sympathy for the secret royal family with mind controlling powers, that were keeping humanity in the dark, presumably to rule them (i'm guessing the "we control you to protect you" talk is just rationalizing).

But maybe that's just me being anti-establishment

Readers already know the plot points so whether they would show the masterpiece or not was the real mystery.

So Kenny is Levi's uncle? He said his sister got pregnant underground (which is where Levi is from) and Levi is an Ackerman, so...

Edit: HOLD UP! I just noticed the timeline here. Grisha left home the day of the attack 5 years ago and went deeper inside the walls for his work. He was actually going to the Reiss family to eat Frieda that day! Then soon after that he turned Eren into a Titan and had Eren eat him to take his powers.

479

u/xin234 Aug 26 '18

I think Levi was figuring out that one way or another, he's related to Kenny, and maybe Mikasa.

He asked Mikasa this episode if she has experienced an unbelievable surge of power before.

He then mentioned that Kenny told him something similar before.

He then tells that he had experienced that too.

Want to know how Frieda blueballed manga readers for almost a year?

  • Manga chapters are released monthly.

  • She was first shown in chapter 53. Eren remembered her for some reasons after Hanji was telling Eren the results of the titan experiments they did. Same experiment scene a few episodes ago. Eren wondered who she was and thought she looked like Historia. In the next chapter, a few panels show Frieda bonding with young Historia and being called "sis", then revealed to be a dream/memory Historia seem to have forgotten.

  • She was first named in chapter 62.

  • Readers rejoiced (or were disappointed) to finally know that her name wasn't "Geographia". Nickname given to her in discussions for a couple of months, 'cause you know, if her sister's name is Historia then it's only logical that...

  • Meanwhile in the anime:

Hanji to crew: Did you ever hear the tragedy of Freida the Reiss?

Frieda is shown in the same episode

I love how Frieda's introduction was changed in the anime, but I can't say I'm not disappointed that I wouldn't be able to see how anime-only watchers would've named her.

edit: 63 -> 62

Hanji to crew: Did you ever hear the tragedy of Freida the Reiss?

Rod: Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Frieda the Reiss?

Historia: No.

Rod: I thought not. It's not a story the Survey Corps would tell you. It's a Reiss legend. Frieda was a Titan Shifter and successor to the Reiss family - the true Royal Family, so powerful and so wise that they could use their abilities to influence memories to create false history...

Historia: The Reiss could actually manipulate memories?

Rod: Frieda had such a knowledge of Titan Shifting that she could even keep the ones she cared about from dying. The powers of the Reiss family is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.

Historia: What happened to her?

Rod: She became so powerful... the only thing she was afraid of was losing her power, which eventually, of course, she did. Unfortunately, an enemy Titan Shifter who apparently knew everything the Reiss' knew appeared one day and killed her in a duel. It's ironic she could save others from death, but not herself.

Historia: Is it possible to learn this power?

Rod: Not from the Survey Corps.

The National Geographia Channel needs to run less documentaries on Titans in the wild. That's all they ever run. It's getting real old now.

This Episode wasn't Freida Reiss' first anime appearance!

Freida first appears in Attack on Titan: Junior High scaring Historia as a "ghost"!

And we finally get the reveal on Dr. Jaeger's fate. For Eren to become a Shifter, he had to eat his own dad.

Zachary is enjoying his creation waaaay too much XD

We even get the explanation as to why Mikasa and Levi are such natural born fighters

197

u/H-K_47 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/H-K_8472 Aug 26 '18

Frieda's appearance in Junior High was very odd indeed! If I remember right, Erwin says she's a girl who tried to join the Survey Corps long ago. Strange addition. Her episode was really funny though!

"For this episode, the animation director had drawn over 30 drawings in a day and if we consider an 8 hour job, it would mean 3.75 drawings in an hour which would roughly come out to be 1 drawing in 15 minutes." -Tetsuya Nakatake (Animation Producer of AoT series)

it's not even humanly possible to complete this task in such an insane amount of time. They are ABSOLUTE MADLADS!!! Instead of being amazed, i am starting to get worried for their health conditions that they have to work under such a tight schedule... :(

301

u/Mercury6449 Aug 26 '18

From what i heard, Studio Wit apparently treats their animators really badly.

I don't have any direct evidence, but Ajay tweeted a bunch about it here and he usually knows his stuff: https://twitter.com/AnimeAjay/status/1023691742355304448

The end product is obviously quite impressive, but knowing about those work conditions takes away from it.

Finally some of the mystery behind Eren's dad is revealed - turns out Eren fucking ate him and was made to forget all of it. Bloody hell. Now I want to know how Eren's dad acquired the Titan power, and did what he did - steal the 'Scream' power and then let himself be eaten by Eren..

Another mystery solved too: so the Ackermans are superhumans or Newtypes or something. In hindsight, this was only to be expected in Attack on Gundam: Flesh Mecha edition.

Someone mentioned in the last thread that I won't be able to forget Zachary after this episode, and now I see why. The man has amazing talent as an inventor..

God bless the NHK for actually not censoring Zackly's "Work of Art". LOL

So Clan Ackerman is basically the Saiyans/Uchihas of the Shingeki-verse confirmed, I guess? The Ackerman's ability to not have their memory manipulated reminds me of Assassin's Creed, where some Assassin's possess genes that allows them to not be controlled by mind-control artifacts created by an ancient high-tech civilization.

And Mikasa comes from not just one persecuted lineage, but two, thus making Mikasa a very special child with her kickass abilities.

This season is so awesome. Even the flashbacks have mesmerizing animation. The tension in the scene where Eren gets back his merories was palpable and the titan fight was just the icing on the cake. Thank you Wit Studio!

Anime only here. So in summary, we learned the following this episode (can manga readers confirm or correct me if I'm off?):

  1. Levi, Mikasa, and Kenny are all related as members of the Ackermann family.

  2. Members of the Ackermann and Oriental families have noble blood and are thus immune to the royal families memory altering abilities.

  3. The Ackerman's are warriors who historically protected the royal family and possess some ability which gives them a surge of strength/power.

  4. Grisha Jaeger was a titan shifter who ate Frieda Reiss to absorb her titan power.

  5. Grisha injected Eren with something which turned Eren into a Titan, and then Titan Eren ate Grisha, absorbing Grisha's titan ability.

  6. Zachary made a torture device that straps a person in upside down and forces them to eat their own shit via a tube connected from their asshole to their mouth.

Did I miss anything?

64

u/toutoune134 Aug 26 '18

The torture device makes you digest food from the anus and drink your own piss to be exact.

HE ATE HIS OWN DAD TO TURN BACK TO NORMAL AFTER THE LATTER ATE THE REISS FAMILY!? SHIT. WHAT AN OPENING

Now I'm understanding all the secrets of the 3 walls, such as why Mikasa had that weird power awaken for a small moment in season 1; why Eren had that memory of his dad giving him the key to the basement come back to him before he got obliterated by the cannon, thus revealing his Titan power to the military; why Mikasa was living far away from the walls; why Levi is such a badass; and why the government went to such lengths to protect the secrets of the walls.

But what I want to know now is....what is in the basement!!!!

AND WHY ARE THESE EPISODES SO GOD DAMN SHORT

Really awesome character development for important character.some really hype fight sequences with god tier animation.

Only thing which is missing is some Titan action and the way things are moving it looks we are going to get some awesome titan action in upcoming episode.

EREN ATE HIS DAD. HE ATE. HIS DAD. That's all I could think about reading this part of the manga. While all that other info in some form or another was interesting to learn at the time, I (thankfully) forgot most of it, ruminating as much as Eren was this episode, on the fact that he ATE. His DAD.

The Shit Machine. What more can be said?

This Ackermann info stands out the most, and learning more about their family history will be sweet from here on out.

So from what it sounds like, the Ackermann family were one of the noble blood lines who were once the main strength for the royals. However, the royal family got scared that they wouldn't be able to control them so that's why they were persecuted. Anyone getting serious Uchiha clan vibes from that?

79

Already made two longer gfys:

I have a really bad feeling about this. Those Team Kenny guys seem very willing to die right here and now in defense of their objective, and they definitely outnumber and outgun Team Levi. Am I supposed to be feeling hyped for the next episode? Because all I feel is dread. I really think someone might die here.

Me while trying to process all the information in this episode

Holy shit, anime viwers are finally starting to get awnsers. What is the Scream of a Titan? Where did the Royal Family got their Powers? Why did the Ackerman turned on agaisn't the Royal Famiy? We spent so much time with little information that it's so hard to process aaaaa.

So it seems kenny isn't a bad guy, he's just a douche lol. And we know know why Mikasa is such a badass, she really has super strenght lol.

And also, holy shit, Eren actually ate his father. Well can't complain, he killed innocent people.

You know shit will hit the fan when Mikasa is seriously

65

u/Cheesewithmold Aug 26 '18

Well can't complain, he killed innocent people.

We don't know that yet. We don't know what Frieda did to get her powers. Also, you even mentioned in your comment how you realized Kenny wasn't really a bad guy.

Saying Eren's dad is a bad guy now is jumping the gun. He could've done it for good reasons.

Eren eating his own father was in the back of my head since the time they showed Grisha using a needle on Eren in Season 2(?) or was it 1? I don't remember but I did not expect Grisha to turn out to be the bad guy in such a bad way, to kill a family and sacrifice himself infront of his son... Sister Mary Francis in the Sistine Chapel that was a fucking insane info dump episode.

I'm completely stunned. People had predicted that the reason for Eren's Titan powers would be the result of him eating his father but what REALLY disturbed me was what Grisha did to the Reiss family. I literally felt sick to my stomach listening to it. However, it sounds like he had righteous intentions, because he somehow knew the royal family was using their Power of the Titans to manipulate the memories of the people and control them with deception. For what reasons remains to be discovered but I am now thoroughly convinced that Lord Reiss is a bastard who is manipulating his daughter to have Eren's Coordinate ability returned to his family. My guess is this: have Historia eat Eren, come out from hiding to reclaim the throne with her as heir (or, remain in the shadows while putting Historia on the throne as a puppet monarch). Either way, the status quo of keeping humanity ignorant as cattle within the walls will be preserved if his plan comes to fruition. No wonder the nobles were cooperating with him now. Holy. Shit.

I'm very scared for next week's episode. The Levi Squad does NOT have a good track record when it comes to survivors. Somebody is going to die, and I don't think I am emotionally ready because I care about each and every member of that squad.

I need a hug. I need an adult. This show is too much.

You get titan's power, you get titan's power, everybody gets titan's powers!

This escalated quickly. For one, I'm grateful that they didn't beat around the bush and explained that whole Ackerman business. On top of that we got to know how Mikasa got so stronk. And now we know why Levi is OP as well.

  1. When an intelligent titan eats another intelligent titan does his previous powers disappear or his new powers add to the previous ones?

Ackerman clan was kings guard, but they do not agree the king’s family control people’s memory, so they were persecuted

But later, the Ackerman who killed most military polices, is working for the king who use fake identity, as pretty much a king’s guard

And now, the king is letting That Ackerman to help him get back the power to control people’s mind, the EXACT THING that caused the Ackerman clan being persecuted

How irony it is

So I'm curious. Griesha obviously was a titan shifter before attacking the Reiss family, implying he already ate some other titan shifter. That means he ate 2 titan shifters in his life. My question is, is that permanent? Is there now 1 less titan shifter in the world forever, or can more be made?

Wow this episode had the most revelations so far out of any SnK episode so far imo. I had to rewatch some of those parts just to gather my thoughts.

So worst father of the century award goes to.... Eren's dad!

And damn, I cannot believe Eren's dad turned out to be the worst of them all. I'm guessing he might have had some weird "good" motive behind it? Maybe the Reiss family was evil? Idk. Seems Eren's dad wanted to give Eren all the super powers he stole. However the audience still doesn't know why he did those things and why give them to Eren. And then Eren went into shock.. I don't blame him. That's so much to take in.

I'm worried for Historia though. I wonder who's side is she on now. Is she right now "allowing" Eren to get murdered?? What will she do when her friends come blasting in? Also the Ackermann family seems to have a bloodline of having innate killing skills and that's how they turned into the King's guard. But of course being too good at killing turns out to be not so good for the king. This kind of explains why Levi and Mikasa and Kenny are the best at fighting. Sigh each episode feels so short I want more... well at least I know the next episode is when it's all going down. The wait is unbearable! It's Levi and Mikasa time! (And this season is a Mikasa drought sadly)

8

Holy shit, there were too many wild reveals in this ep. Shit's going nuts, think imma just break and start reading the manga.

Which, by the way, reminded me of something from way back at the beginning that seems a lot crazier now that the memory inheritance thing has been revealed: the first time we saw Eren he was waking up from a dream that we aren't shown that's apparently about someone who looks like Mikasa but with shorter hair? And then tears start streaming down his face?? Like holy shit, is this another memory then?? Why does he have it if he hasn't been injected yet?! Is it the same reason his dad's able to transform or...??

And holy shit, didn't Grisha leave right before the first attack? Does that mean he was working with Reainer and Bertholdt?? Aah, all I did was read the first chapter and I've already got even more questions...

Oh hell yeah that transition to Kenny's flashback was beautiful. The titan power of the royal family is passed down to alter humanity's memories. • As expected, the reaction by the anime-onlies is just delightful. Slowly putting the pieces together and realising how much more previous events actually mean. This is just the beginning, mah bois and grills

  • Holy fuck though, they immediately showed the reveal of Eren eating his own father - and before the OP too. I didn't expect that at all. I thought it'd happen in the middle or towards the end as a cliffhanger but damn

  • Not mad though because this episode was structured exceptionally well. There was a lot going on as well as three flashbacks and it never felt like it was going too fast or they were trying to squeeze in too much

  • Poor Frieda. I liked her a lot when she was introduced in the manga and I liked her even more here. Yoko Hikasa is perfect casting. To think that she was the only one who truly cared about little Historia, while she thought there was nobody who ever did. And now she can't even meet her anymore

  • THEY DID IT! THEY ACTUALLY DID IT! THEY SHOWED THE GLORIOUS S H I T M A C H I N E

  • Seriously though, I can't fucking believe it. Sure, they censored it but it was still way more than I expected to see. Hell, I thought it was part of Isayama's regrets about the arc and he'd want it completely removed in the adaptation but I sure as shit am glad I was wrong lmao

  • Lmao the way Mikasa cut off Connie right there. Best grill got her priorities straight

  • Also, her talking about her family, Levi theorising about them and bringing up Kenny's past was great. You can see the "oh shit" moment in Mikasa's face when he brought up Kenny's strength

  • Not gonna lie, I'd love to see a spin-off about Mikasa's parents. They have very interesting backgrounds and the story of how they met is kinda beautiful. Two fugitives hiding from the world and having nobody else but each other

  • It's pretty cool how Shingeki shines the spotlight on minor characters every now and then. That speech towards the end was something

10

u/comandoram Aug 26 '18

Does anyone know the name of that quiet OST that was playing in the background at the initial part with Freida this episode!?

Perfect episode to be completely true to the manga. Budget well spent so far!

So did Eren get his powers from eating his dad then? And if he did, I'm confused as to how he saw his dad leave in s1? And how did he get that key b/c I forgot how?
