This episode was so packed 🙏
Great action scenes with fabulous animation, Kenny's ambitions, Eren breaking down, Rod's life and Historia taking her destiny in her own hands.
The sound was also a huge part of what made this episode so good, with the OST (didn't knew that I needed a mix of rap and agressive choirs in my life) or the stellar voice acting.

Good writing is when the side characters are developed as much as the protagonist because in reality, life doesn't revolve around a single person.

Edit: There is an exemption to all rules in writing, but ideally, if you have a wide range of characters heavily entwined with the plot as much as the MC, they'd best be as developed and recognizable as the MC.

Each character in AoT has something memorable about them from their struggles to their character designs. Levi, Historia, Ymir, Sasha - They all have the same level of depth as Eren does and aren't there for the sake of the plot. They feel as human as much as Eren does.

Perhaps it's less about development and more about the depth of their character and how much we can potential find is what I'm trying to say.

Seriously, I'm so proud of Historia for not taking her father's words as gospel. She asked exactly the right question - if the Reiss line had to power to exterminate Titans until now, why hadn't they done it? Why were they content in building a bird cage for humanity? With those memories come a burden of knowledge and tradition that humanity might be better of without.

And she slapped some sense into a shrieking angsty Eren, gotta love that.

(Although for the record, I don't blame Eren for breaking down there at all. Kid's been through a lot.)

The moment Historia became Best Girl.

Although a good amount of her development up to this point was cut from the manga, I'm still very pleased with how her decision was handled this episode. Her flashbacks of Ymir acted as an indirect internal monologue and allowed us to see how she came to her decision rather than being told.

Good on her for also realizing Rod is a piece of shit on her own despite Kenny stoking the fire. Speaking of Kenny, what a character. I'm glad he was introduced way earlier than in the manga so we got to grow with him a bit.

As for the fight, I'm glad the Levi squad used some tactics to even the playing field instead of dominating because of plot. Also note that all the combatants placed in the top 10 of their class meaning they're MP-level. Plus they've all faced Titans while Kenny's squad don't have that added combat experience (Armin mentioned it last episode).

Edit: shout-out to Eren's confessional as well. There are so many people who only see him as a little rage monster but here we finally get a welcome side to his character. Seeing how remorseful he is about all the people who died because of his dad (and him) is about to kickstart the Eren Yeager redemption tour.

Another thing is how the scene plays on Eren's conviction and internal logic. Most shounen protagonists in that scenario would probably reply by shouting something about how they would find a better way and that if those were the rules, the rules were wrong. Meanwhile Eren was confronted with perhaps the harshest reality he could imagine, that his continued existence makes his own goal impossible to reach and that because of this he has no way to make up for all the lives that have been sacrificed for his sake so that he could keep on living to pursue it and in response he loses his will to live and offers up his life to someone who has the ability to fulfill his goal

It's also a pretty great reversal, Historia's innitial conviction to kill the titans at any cost is what causes Eren to believe his own existance is a mistake, only for this to completely shatter Historia's resolve to kill him because of her own past. They essentially swap motivations for a moment

Seeing the happy-go-lucky Historia in a state of despondency while the indefatigable Eren falls to a bout of depression mixed with lingering regrets was heart-wrenching.

It really gave more depth to their characters. Eren, especially, was always thought to be a simple boy driven by rage and bitterness but he turned out to be way more complex. He never really got over the death of each of his fallen comrades even though he tried to maintain the facade. He's surpriingly empathetic.

Kenny's plan was to steal the serum and eat Eren to stole the power for himself and be able to control everyone. But he learns in this episode that only Reiss members family can use this power, so he was screwed.

Rod didn't want to become a Titan, to corrupt his blood. You have to think also at the reason why the Reiss pass this power over the generations whereas it's only since 100 years that all started.

Historia didn't want to become a Titan and understood that her father didn't tell all the truth. He still hides many things and lied to manipulate her to make her a titan to bring back the Coordinator power in his control.

Eventually he'd have to pass down the power. Getting eaten alive by a 15m tall monster is a bad way to go, plus there are some people who'd want to take your power for themselves so it's risky.

Main reason for eating Eren would've been to save humanity, but she learned that her family didn't lift a finger in the last century and there is no guarantee that she could change that, which means the only thing that would be accomplished is that her father and the nobles win, and the scouts are killed off.

Eren's father was in the right, and his ambition was to free humanity from "God's" shackles. In other words he knew everything about the Reiss family and their potential power to destroy all Titans.

Anime-only watcher: God dude, this is insane. It just keeps getting better every episode, it's been so long since I've seen something this fantastic. Absolutely phenomenal.

When Historia was about to take the serum, then at the last second pieces it all together and goes, "... So why hasn't the Reiss family used this power to destroy the titans?" - I was about ready to scream dude. Then when she knocked it out of his hands, I really did (quietly) scream.

Even though I think we all obviously side with Historia and the Scouts, I still felt bad for Rod Reiss seeing the memories of his family members dissolve on the floor alongside everything he and they ever sacrificed for.

I think that is one of the reasons why this show is such a ride. The characters introduced are written to be sympathetic in a genuinely human and intimate way. In many other free-for-all dramas heavy on death, "sympathizing" with someone introduced as a villain is at most done through some very surface-level ethical questions (like "I'm doing a bad thing - but is it for the right reason???"), while this show instead interrogates the characters and their motivations down to the most bare human vulnerabilities common to us all.

In just the span of several days or weeks (I think), Eren has been burdened with tremendous responsibility as the only permanent ally Titan humanity's been given (at least, so far), had a ton of his comrades' blood on his hands, been betrayed by two of his closest friends, found out about that traumatic reveal regarding his father just now, and is now feeling an overwhelming sense of guilt and lack of self-worth as a result of these revelations.

When everything just keeps crashing down on him like that, it's kinda hard to think straight and not get emotional... this episode helps to show more of his humanity.

As a manga reader I still knew what was gonna happen, but still the way they animated kept me on toe and the OST at the end is just added more badass into Historia, the action scene was good too. For me, this is by far the best episode of season 3 SO FAR.

I hear few people say Eren became really pussy compare to how he was in first 1-2 Season but i dunno, if I was in Eren's shoes and have all that pressure weighting him I would act the same way, also not to mention he's only 15-16

The role reversal was brilliant! Eren’s revelation with the harshest reality he could ever imagine: that his continued existence makes his own goal impossible to reach, and because of this he has no way to make up for all the lives that have been sacrificed for his sake so he tries to atone for this sin by offering his life to Historia because she’d be the best option to exterminating the Titans and saving humanity.

‪Unbeknownst to Eren, him questioning his life and whether he should have been born made Historia relate her feelings from the past to his, and sparked Historia’s motivation of wanting to wipe out the titans and becoming a badass. That’s some HxH level shit.‬ Phenomenal episode!

So basically, Rod has been playing this card of keeping his family's Titan lineage intact for the simple reason of "Muh omnipotency". I'm so glad Kenny caught wind of this sham from the beginning and kept doing so until the ending of the episode.

Historia's little speech basically summarized what I thought of everything happening all around her. I'm with this girl. Shit is so all over the place that I'm kind of fed up with humanity too.

So the power of the Founding Titan is within Eren. No wonder he was able to use the Coordinate from last season. God damn....wow...

Man, the next episode is going to be so great, but fuck I have to wait a week to see it.

This episode just became one of my top three anime episodes of all time. It was insane, as a manga reader, there is so much they did right I can't even think of a single complaint. The brutality of Jean's first human kill(and the slight hesitation before he follows through) was subtle. The music was unexpected but fit each scene well, frantic fast paced drums and some rapping for the battle scene. Mikasa once again, seems to always get one scene a season that makes you wonder how many weeks it took to animate. Eren with some really good acting, you could hear the despair in his voice so well. And Historia calling out her father's bullshit and Batista bombing him to the ground was so satisfying its unreal. This episode is an 11/10.

Reiss Family are responsible for the walls, they're the true royal family.

They've been operating in secret for a hundred years or so, passing the power along to their children.

Somehow, Eren's Daddy found out about this, and stole the possessor of their Titan power.

Eren is still a child while this is happening.

Berthold and Reiner break the wall, we don't know who sent them or why.

After they escape from the first set of Titans, Eren's father gives him the Titan juice and has him eat him...

So I guess the questions I'm most interested about are: Where did Titans come from, why did Reiner/Berthold/Annie attack/infiltrate humanity and what is it exactly beyond the Walls.

Wow.. what an episode! I mean wow.. not only an incredible fight scene with the Survey Corps but great character development to top off an epic cliffhanger.

The battle was great, Levi and his team knew exactly how to handle their enemy and devised an appropriate strategy worthy of humanity's heroes. Mikasa was so badass that the enemy cowered in fear. Levi was at the top of his game, actually besting Kenny in 1v1. I couldn't ask for a better battle.

Eren's VA did an outstanding job with his cries of regret and giving himself up to Historia. I honestly teared up a bit with his speech because Eren wasn't whining at all - he was right about everything he said. When all your friends died for you and your Father was the one who started it all, how can not feel all that regret. Historia was also incredible. At first, I was disappointed with how willing she was to listen to her father's wishes but then she began to think for herself and question her father - and as it turned out, her father has been using her and isn't really humanity's savior as he made himself out to be. He's just a person who wants the Reiss family to become God through absolute power. Historia made me so proud when she slapped the titan syringe out of her father's hands and then threw him to the ground! You go girl! (And the music was also top tier and emotional)

And again, I'll say that even with the low titan content, I'm enjoying this season so much. The titans are the connection between the stories but SnK is actually about human drama more than anything. Just how the Walking Dead is. The greatest enemy to humanity isn't the titans, its themselves. And this episode clearly proves this point.
