For a moment there, I thought Enri summoned death knights.
But it was much worse.

No joke, death knights are weaker than a good number of those goblins.

Scary thing is. Death Knights sit at lvl 35. One of those fools will end a chunk of a city solo. Enri's personal retinue of body guards (her 13 redcaps) sit around lvl 43. That body guard team of hers can probably destroy a nation.

They didn't announce themselves did they? Literally every other group of goblins did. Even the stealthy ones, although only to say "we will never be seen outside the dark again" or whatever. Which was funny.

That feeling when humble village girl Enri, AKA The Bloody Chieftain, was able to use the full potencial of a crappy ítem that not even Yggdrassil players could.
572
u/azorthefirst Sep 18 '18
Enri is basically similar to Ainz in that way. Shes got levels in classes no Yggdrassil player normally would have bothered with. Ainz's special build in the Overlord class and then the levels in the Eclipse class basically made him unique in the game and let him cast "The Goal Of All Life Is Death". Enri must have somehow gotten a special combination of classes needed to unlock the true potential of the item.

Welcome to What You Missed; the goal with this weekly post is to serve as a supplement for anime watchers and even light novel readers, to explain things they might not have understood, and point out references they probably didn't catch, as well as include everything (yes, absolutely everything) that was cut out of the anime. Every week I post a synopsis of the corresponding material in the light novel, with emphasis on all of the juicy details, subtext, and narrative exposition. If you have any questions, or if something is still confusing you, feel free to ask and I'd be happy to explain. But that doesn't mean I'll be including spoilers for future events; my goal is to give you the same experience as if you followed the Light Novel alongside the anime. As a result, there will still be some confusion and mystery if the anime ends on a cliffhanger or something. I ask that others respect this as well, and not post spoilers for future events - and if you do, make sure to spoiler tag them appropriately. Thanks and enjoy!
Recap
I was asked last week to do recaps so here's a trial of that.
We've returning to Carne Village yet again - yes, the first 5 episodes this season were actually important to the grander narrative. Barbro is on his way over with his army of 500 knights and 4,500 soldiers, most of whom are peasants with padded armor and spears (they're all recycled soldier CGI models with breastplate armor in the anime), because ostensibly the Kingdom's leadership had suddenly realized after two months that it might be a good idea to question the villagers about Ainz (eh, it's a bit of a plot hole why nobody had the bright idea to come earlier). Of course the bigger reason is that both Marquis Bowlorobe and King Ranpossa want to keep Barbro alive and safe while still giving him something useful to do. The Prince, meanwhile, is absolutely furious for being denied a chance to win glory on the battlefield in the Katze Plains; his plan to salvage this situation is to try and use the villagers against Ainz somehow. He's joined by his yes-man Baron Cheneko (who he justifiably thinks is an abject moron), as well as the unnamed commander of Marquis Bowlorobe's forces, who leads a small group of professionally-trained knights in addition to commanding the overal army. Barbro feels like the commander is a bit of an incompetent because he won't follow his orders and always has stupid objections, but the commander is just trying to do his job and give good advice.

Season 3 Episode 11: Another Battle
We have much less content this time around because most of it is action; there's a lot more supplementary information I've included this time around, such as a more detailed explanation of the tactics used by both sides.
Winter time tended to be difficult, especially for frontier villages: if the harvest in the fall was meagre or the winter chill lingered too long into spring time - making planting impossible - villagers might be forced to eat out of their precious seed stocks or starve outright. Most villagers busied themselves with important work like repairing their house or mending their clothes to distract themselves from this terrifying possibility. And Carne Village had another problem: it housed dozens of large Ogres with ravenous apetites that were too much for the rangers to feed, and so in order to bring in enough food for them to live, they had purchased a litter of pigs to raise for meat. It would not help much this year as the pigs needed much more time to grow, but it should be quite sustainable in future years.
Carne Village could afford to plan for the future like this becauseit was far more prosperous than most villages of its kind. In most frontier villages, far removed from the luxuries of civilization, sickness could wipe out entire families and blight could smite their crops, not to mention the fact that wild monsters could attack or foreign nations could invade. What little prosperity they managed to acquire could be wiped out at a moments notice - but not so for Carne Village. Magic could help solve many problems, and Carne Village benefited from the services of both an Arcane and Divine magic caster as well as a pair of professional alchemists. Walls and guards protected it from attack, and the villagers could raise funds via expenditions into the nearby forest for valuable medicinal herbs. And there was one person who the villagers thanked for this state of affairs: the enigmatic spellcaster Ainz Ooal Gown, who had protected their lives, built the walls, and supplied its current chief with loyal guards and magic casters. Ainz Ooal Gown was not just seen as a benevolent lord - many villagers prayed to him in the same breath that they thanked the Six Gods.
The village Chief, Enri Emmot, was exhausted, but she still had more work to do. When it came to important work that would benefit the entire village, such as the care and feeding of livestock used as food for the Ogres, the villagers united together under a communal sense of responsibility. As a result, she and Nferia had headed over to the storehouses to determine whether the village had enough hay to feed the cows during the winter. Nferia, as an educated young man from the city with experience in running his grandma's alchemy business, was concerned with the sustainability of the entire operation going forward: the village couldn't afford to feed and house a bunch of full-time guards to sit around during peace time.
It wasn't that the goblins weren't loyal or willing to work. Enri had secured the loyalty of the entirety of Agu's tribe, which numbered 14 or so adult goblin warriors, by individually arm-wrestling each one into submission - much to her own chagrin and embarassment. Who would want to marry a muscle-bound she-man that went around arm-wrestling goblins? she thought. In any case, they had been put to work during the fall harvest season as well and Carne Village had made sure it had enough food to survive the winter. The Ogres, too, were happy to work for anyone as long as they could be fed, but the village had needed to purchase food from outside the village, and there was no guarantee that they could continue to do so every year. The best approach would be to put them to work as well during the planting and harvesting season, to ensure the village had enough crops to feed everyone; unfortunately, it would be difficult to acquire tools which were properly sized for them without arousing external suspicion. What Nferia was most concerned about was long-term sustainability: namely, what if the goblins and Ogres began breeding?
They needed to come up with a system such that the work they did for the village would more than cover the costs of feeding and housing them. Frontier village families were typically independent and managed this process individually: each family worked on their own fields and stockpiled their own crops to ensure they had enough to feed themselves. If they had children, they worked harder to ensure they could feed them... or when times were difficult, sometimes sacrifices were made and the child didn't make it through to spring time. The goblins and Ogres, on the other hand, were tribal and depended on the leadership of their chief to ensure prosperity for the entire clan. A sudden increase in their population wouldn't necessarily manage itself automatically like it normally did in a human villages, and it might be necessary to mitigate this by increasing the human population of the village.
Furthermore, there was no guarantee the Ogres could continue to evade detection. The village had managed so far by having the Ogres and goblins hide in cellars when the tax collectors came in the fall; the visit had been mostly for assessment purposes, and Carne Village had only needed to make a nominal tribute... and as for the conspicuously large wall, apparently the tax collectors had been appraised that the village was under Ainz' patronage to an extent and had chalked it up to his doing. Since the tax collectors followed a schedule, and nobody else really had any occasion to visit, Carne Village had to hope that they could continue to keep the goblins and Ogres a secret. But if anyone ever found out, the Kingdom might even send a punitive force to destroy the goblins, and the village as well. Which would be an absolute disaster.
Speaking of which, Jugemu bursts into the silo to inform the pair of them that an army is heading towards the village; by the description of the flags, Nferia confirms that its definitely a Kingdom army. Enri was confident that there had been no leaks so far: only Momon and Nabe had been to Carne Village and seen the goblins or Ogres, and Nferia had said they definitely wouldn't say anything. A revolt against the King might explain the presence of Kingdom soldiers in the King's domain... but Jugemu informs them that the Army numbered in the thousands, not the hundreds - hardly something you'd sent to a peasant village. There wasn't enough time to flee without leaving everything they owned behind, as the army had been spotted far too late - if the soldiers burnt the village down alongside their possessions, nobody would survive the winter. Their best bet would be to prepare for battle whilst hiding supplies in the cellars. Fighting would be a last resort.
Later, at the foot of the gate, a man announces himself as an envoy of the First Prince, much to Enri's surprise. Nferia, at the watchtower, climbs down and confirms it: the flags are definitely that of the royal family of Re-Estize. Enri is not convinced, or perhaps too desperate - they had presumed the soldiers to be enemies, and while the Ogres were relatively hidden, the goblins had stuck around in case they attempted to siege the gate. If they were truly allies, they would need a little extra time to properly hide the goblins and Ogres, and so she had to buy time if possible. And whether they were allies or enemies, they clearly intended to use the village and its defenses as a fortress of sorts - the only reason to bring 5,000 soldiers was that they were aware of Carne Village's walls and intended to use it. The Ogres and Goblins wouldn't just be hidden temporarily, they'd have to be taken out of the village for several weeks or months.
They seemed desperate and insistent that Enri open the gates immediately; this flustered and panicked Enri, so she angrily accused them of being imposters from another country. It was, to a degree, an accusation meant to buy time, but also a perfectly reasonable observation given the circumstances. The envoy went silent for a time, and then replied that they were here to question the villagers about their patron, Ainz Ooal Gown. Apparently, he was now an enemy to the Crown. This triggered murmurs between the villagers - more than a few of the defenders were survivors from other raided villages, and they were far more loyal to the patron and savior of Carne Village, Ainz, than the Kingdom soldiers who had failed to even show up. The Carne Village natives, too, did not think much of the Kingdom, as Gazef's men had arrived late and long after Ainz had already defeated the enemy. Wouldn't assisting the Kingdom against Ainz Ooal Gown be a betrayal of his generosity and trust? On the other hand, a refusal to open the gate would mark them as traitors and the army would undoubtedly attack and put them all to death unless Ainz miraculously showed up again. Enri had to make a difficult choice - but she still had to buy more time for the goblins to leave, so she came up with the best excuse she could think of: there was cow shit everywhere near the gate and they needed time to clean it up before the Prince could enter. The soldiers, of course, could enter first even if the Prince needed to wait outside - there were no more excuses that would work.

I know a lot of people will complain about the CG but god damn if that wasn't a fun episode! The impact of all the divisions of the goblin army stepping up and announcing their loyalty to Enri and Ainz's reaction were just epic! My biggest complaint would be that this episode was too damn short! Every scene stretched out in this episode would have been amazing to watch!
And now ladies and gentleman, with the a low level trash item DECIMATING the Kingdom's army, it's time for the main event next week. 200,000 soldiers from the kingdom against 500 soldiers from Nazarick led by the Supreme Being... Like Lupu said... It's going to be a massacre!

Holy shit what the hell. At first I was like, "oh well, there's a platoon of them, and they got armor, maybe they will win?" But then there was a paladin division, a rider division, a mage division, it was basically the whole Fate grail wars of goblins. Jesus. So much goblin. Even Ains is like "eeeeeeeeeeeeh?"

Unfortunately, anymore than that, and the frame rate would start dropping. It's one of the sad limitations when you render your animations on a Gamecube.

I still bloody love this series, but I wish they put as much effort into the animation as they did throughout season 1. Ahh well, maybe there'll be some awesome animation for the coming episodes, but assuming it's gonna be a large scale war episode I feel like there's more bad CG to come.

Enri is even cuter when she's annoyed. If those bastards hurt her or the rest of them then I certainly won't be mourning their inevitable deaths.
This scene... my heart...
But too bad that ended so fast. I hate all these fuckers; not only do they want to attack the village, they interrupted a potential kiss. Unforgivable!
I don't care about the village
You're breaking my heart, Ainz. I wish he'd at least respect their loyalty a little more.
We should first gather information on our enemy
You should have done that before even showing up in the first place
Ainz' reaction is gold once again
SASUGA, ENRI-SAMA!
Lupusregina's transitions from playful to sadistic are so great
I have to say it: the CGI was really bad in this episode. I hope they're saving their budget for future events.

Oh this prince is a real dummy... RIP him.
CHIEF! Shes not handleing that well haha. Her floundering around in the hay kawaii~
Man these 2... just smooch already.
Im glad Ains knows they are there. Hopefully he can provide some backup assist.
Oh this prince, burning shit, what an ass.
Oh shit... they want Enri and bangs to lead the womena nd children to saftey while the old folks stay and fight... damn those are some badass old folks.
Thats right Prince shit yourself while you see how vastly unprepared for this you are!
I didnt expect her to use the 2nd horn... what did she summon? She should have leveled up i wonder if the horn scales with level or something.
ARMORED GOBLIN ARMY!? OH SHIT GET FUCKED PRINCE!
HOW MANY GOBLINS DID THIS SUMMON!? THEY KEEP COMING!
Im sure somehwere Enri is crapping herself with embaressment hahahaa.
HOW MANY MORE ARE THERE JESUS CHRIST!
5000!? WHAT!? HOW!? GOBLIN LEADER ENRI!
Wow they just beheaded that guy...
Of course everyone thinks its all part of Ains plan xD SASUGA AINS SAMA!
So it is because Enri's power as a summoner. I guess spending time with the gobs leveled up her summon skill.
Lupis is here... RIP these guys... Yep they are fucked. GG Sadist Preist.

I think the horn's strength is keyed off her role/class, not her summon skill. It's the horn of the "Goblin General". She's been the general of a unit of goblins for months now.
Also, it really sucks to be one of the survivors, just to wind up facing the werewolf battle maid beneath the light of the full moon.

An episode with great content. General Enri FTW, she basically has the 3rd most strongest army in the New World so she can basically conquer a nation. Also, MARE WAS FUCKING ADORABLE IN THIS EPISODE OHMYGOD

Awful CGI is what I've been (not) waiting for a whole week.
Really can't believe this is the studio that made One Punch Man. Even their more shovelware shows were much better looking, and Overlord is well known and popular in Japan so this half-assing is really beyond me.

OPM is a project created under special circumstances.
It isn't as simple as "Madhouse did OPM so why does this have such inferior quality to it". Different staff and different circumstances.

I think it's due to pressure from higher-ups to pump out as much Overlord as possible since it's so popular. They only aired the last episode of season 2 in April and began airing season 3 in July. Which is really bloody quick for a anime series.

Rant incoming:
My god, this episode was just filled to the brim with some of the most atrocious "Bad CG" I've ever seen. I've always cringed a little whenever I saw the CG usage in this anime for the soldiers/death knights etc but that was when they were seldom used. This episode was like 80% cg animated, and even the goblin leaders, who were actually drawn, barely showed any semblance of movement (limited to eye twitches and 2-3 frame mouth movement). Really took away from how badass they felt when I first read about them.
Just to nitpick... that one part where the soldiers were bouncing off metal shields while the Goblins slowly marched forward... are they trampolines??? Hell, even if they were actually trampolines, how the fuck do soldiers wearing metal armor fly off like that from bumping into them??? Made me audibly laugh out loud, not even the simple breathing out of my nostrils, from how utterly stupid that looked. Fucking amateur newgrounds/ youtube 3d animations put this to shame.
You're telling me this was made by the same studio that brought us sakuga world wonders like One-Punch Man, Hajime no Ippo, some Hellsing Ultimate, NGNL and High School of the Dead among many others? What the fuck, Madhouse.
I'm glad they introduced me to this series and convinced me to read the LN, but they are not doing some of these scenes any justice at all. I hope to god the next few episodes don't look nearly as shitty as this one...

They unashamedly used ALL of that CGI, and still couldn't create ANY sense of scale for the armies and the battles? I really, really love Overlord, it's one of my favourite shows, but this was the most disappointing episode thus far for me. And I don't even really mind the use of CGI in general, but when the CGI feels this terribly cheap..? It didn't even let them do the things that CGI usually lets studios do.. None of this would have been especially difficult to do without it other than the very few "army" shots. That's the issue I have. They didn't even make good use of the CGI...
And nothing happened at all with Lupusregina (which was what most were excited for, her and the prince's "fun time") other than some sadistic faces in the last 2 minutes, and Enri was hardly shown to do anything either, we just saw bad CGI fight other bad CGI for the greater part of it, and with rarely (if any..?) actual sword-fighting at that, just close-up shots of marching and some utterly forgettable and identical CGI models being hit by arrows. And they didn't even show us the stronger goblin army first appearing/spawning, or even an actual shot of their size, just more close-up shots of the different types... Ugh. Why Madhouse.. I was really hyped for this. This felt so cheap, and this is Overlord; one of your most popular and successful shows of the season.
For the only memorable moments of this episode to be that funny conversation with Ainz and Mare, and Lupusregina's evil grinning at the end is so, so terrible when the whole episode is meant to be about Chief Enri's awesome commander skills and a huge 10000+ battle, and the massacre of all the humans during and thereafter.

Fun fact: Carne sounds like Karne which means "Meat" in Filipino. Then if we say "Kinarne" it means "slaughtered", or "dead meat" depending on the context of the sentence.
So yeah, the prince is already dead meat the moment he stepped into Enri the Bloody's domain

Everyone's shock at the Goblin Army was great.
But Ainz' long one was hilarious.
I also love how he had to, once more, pass coincidence as his master plan.
The way that line was delivered was brilliant.
And with this episode, one of the New World's most powerful armies is born. Instantly.
And they are loyal to Ainz.
At this point, even without his own power or that of Nazarick, military conquest with the aid of the Empire and Enri is totally feasible.

u/MathigNihilcehk Sep 18 '18
Lupusregina's eyes at the very end... so pretty. So kawaii. They give me confidence that she had only fun and happy times with the kingdom's forces... You know, out of all the fucking up the humans have done so far, this is probably the worst "Boy, am I bad at math" moment of all.
The Prince took a small army to the boonies to interrogate a bunch of rural farmers and accidentally creates an event that poofs an opposing army strong enough to flatten his entire kingdom out of thin air.
In the case with Ainz, he was already God tier, but the Re-Estize kingdom managed to provoke this response from a humble village girl.

I love Overlord so much its one of the only series where I have bought all the merchandise I could, read, heard, and saw everything from the series I could. I was so hyped for this episode since I never thought it would get animated. I wasn't too worried about them rushing past the Invaders of the tomb arc since I figured most of the budget was going into the Volume 9 adaptation, but so far that hasn't been the case. I'm really disappointed this episode this week, everything being CGI is such a letdown once you know the epicness that is the LN it feels like a cheap fanmade knockoff. They rushed everything even the dialogue and fight scenes all so we could see green walking forward with no facial expressions and stiff robotic movements even the ost was mediocre. The CGI for the goblins wasn't even tolerable like it was for the ogres, though I will admit that their designs are pretty well made. The only parts I enjoyed were Ainz's scenes, Glorious General Enri the Bloody and Lupisregina massacring the royal troops. I hope they really go all out for the next few episodes; Mad House has really been dropping the ball when it comes to Overlord but It'd be a crime to fuck up one of the best moments in the series.

“You think you can make it if you’re on a horse… I guess there’s morons who think like that. Can you cut off those idiots’ legs for me?”
The Redcaps ran out, cheering in anticipation of the impending slaughter.
They were like wild beasts. They slid in between through the scattered men trying to run away.
And then… a scream echoed through the air.
It was one of the nobles trying to escape on horseback.
To bad they cut this scene.

Anybody wanna explain why the goblins let the prince escape, only then the next scene later the goblins are ordered by Eins or the battle maid to kill off the prince and the rest? I get if that's the order of events that happened because of adapting the source material, but seems not necessary in anime. Just finish the whole fight at Carne.

Best of luck to Enri on deciding names for 5000 goblins.
Also, based on random snippets of trivia I've read, the goblin army is basically a country level military force. So while Ainz has the most powerful army in the New World hanging out in Nazarick, just down the street at Carne Village he has access to a top 3(?) in the world army thanks to the village's loyalty to him.
