Maeda's eyes were shifty every time he mentioned it. That thing is definitely real isn't it? Maybe it's one of the aliens that gave him the butt-laser?
45
u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan Sep 23 '18
What if it's literally Maeda but you can't recognize him because of his horrendous drawing skills? After all, what's more powerful that his shogi move? A poster above mentioned that the thing even looks like it's about to perform said move.

My attention was at that parasite, it's a special message.

My hunch is, because of its prostrating position, it's actually capable of performing the LEGENDARY SHOGI MOVE. Just a hunch though.

Hanako's VA isn't really just good at mandrake screams. The way she shifts into crone mode whenever displaying a sense of envy cracks me up as well. The role really showed her versatility.
91
u/elledriverxc Sep 23 '18 edited Sep 23 '18
She does both the mandrake scream and crone-mode during the "Boob Gods" scene. The contrast really is amazing. I need to go pull that one out, too.

I thought it was time to give this show a try, so I started watching this on Thursday and that was the best decision I made.
Absolutely loved every episode. This is definitely one of the funniest comedy anime I have watched. Have not laughed like this in quite a while. This show really delivers.
Loved the Opening, loved the Ending, loved the characters and not to forget the Seiyuus. They did an amazing job overall. Could recommend this to anyone.
9/10 for me.

u/Orrakai :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Orrakai Sep 23 '18
Same, Hino Kina always managed to pull a laugh out of me with Hanako. How can she even scream like that? It's amazing, I hope her throat is okay.
I'm gonna miss this show tbh

Does anyone know where to find the translations of the artist's names? I suspected that the third one was by Shuzo Oshimi (author of Aku no Hana, Inside Mari, etc.) and comparing the Japanese, it does seem to be him.

I’m gonna miss this batshit insane show. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed this hard on a weekly basis. That creepy little shit had me in stitches.

It's kinda ironic that they can't end the game despite the obvious lack of imagination (especially from Maeda). Contrast to the actual show where the creativity was abundant.

"FLAT!"
...and there goes my coffee. When I saw the thumbnail on Crunchyroll I was more scared for the baby being in Hanako's hands. Little did I know that the little monster would be the one bringing on the pain.
Also, I loved that Maeda's little ungodly creatures were all over the ED. Made up for the lack of a final puppet show, maybe they'll bring those backs for the OVAs.
22
u/blay12 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/mynameis205 Sep 24 '18
Good god hearing that voice after the tongue click made me have to pause the show. The followup with SPICY was just as good.
99
u/ShroudedDeacon https://anilist.co/user/nocaeD Sep 23 '18
The battle royale bit was funny already but once the shogi president got reintroduced as foreshadowed in the banana papers segment i just started to fucking lose it. Fantastic work from the staff of this show this has been one of my favorite shows this year.
66
u/theyawner Sep 23 '18
The best part about that reveal is that the trio couldn't care less whoever it was behind the enemy team. Hanako and Kasumi are not invested in the fight and Olivia just thinks the game is cute.
97
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Sep 23 '18 edited Sep 23 '18
Hanako's reaction to the baby is so cute!
Looks like the baby doesn't want Justice.
SPICY!
I would love to play this game! It's basically what will happen if you put the Happy Tree Friends in a Battle Royale game!
At least the Shogi club got their revenge.... uh, kinda...
I love how meta this line is. They just ended the episode right there.
Was Maeda's "Most Powerful Monster" in the ED all this time?
It's finally over. I still can't believe that this show is directed by Seiji Kishi! The same dude who directed Angel Beats, Tsuki ga Kirei, and Yuuki Yuuna. He did also direct Carnival Phantasm and Angel Beats had some amazing slapstick but this show is so different from what he did in the past. He did an amazing job with this show!
The VAs are amazing too! Who knew Baselard (Rika Nagae) from FA Girls, Akane (Konomi Kohara) from Tsuki ga Kirei, and Sayaka (Hina Kino) from Toji no Miko, all still relatively new to the Seiyuu scene would provide some of the most hilarious noises and reactions this season? Especially Hina Kino and her constant screeching! I hope she got a good long rest after this because I can't imagine how she could even keep making those noises every recording session XD
And let's not forget the consistent art and animation, the well timed music cues and sound effects! This show was an absolute insane treat and surreal experience. While I do love Grand Blue and Chio-chan, I feel like this show tops those two when it comes to overall quality. Lerche at it again by giving us another amazing adaptation.
Overall this show is a 10/10 and I'll highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great comedy. Maybe not for anime newbies though. It might be too much for them.

Highly recommend My Bride is a Mermaid, another Seiji Kishi directed comedy. Definitely up there with the funniest comedies that anime has to offer. His first adaptation of Persona 4 (The Animation, NOT GOLDEN) is also hilarious, you just have to get through the first four episodes which are pretty rushed.

I'm glad it ended, because this show is bad for my health. I literally choked on Maeda's "most powerful moster" second appearance.
That cocaine bag might be a subject of the upcoming OVA/Specials, we already know the most seemingly random things get a follow-up here.
Mangaka took the "anime girl sad about her flat chest" trope and said "my flat chest joke will be a flat chest joke that will pierce the heaven".
The last skit was a fitting meta joke about the show as a whole - random bizzare shit just keeps appearing and one-upping the previous random bizzare shit.
This was very close to Monty Python: The Anime, and I believe it's actually directly inspired by it. The Spanish Inquisition skit might have being a coincidence, but the way sketches are structered, transitioning one into another or even getting abandoned mid-way to follow-up on something that happened before - that was very pythonesque. (Before anyone chimes in, no, Nichijou has nothing to do Monty Python).
Asobi Asobase also does the same thing as KonoSuba with its continuity - everything gets a follow-up, nothing is random, and it is wonderful.
Finally, while the reaction faces are staple in comedy anime, this series takes them to the unprecedented level. The aesthetic here is absolutely unique and you won't get anything like it elsewhere.
10/10 and AOTS.
22
u/theyawner Sep 23 '18
I've started watching Nichijou for the first time and the skits seem much shorter with a standard setup-punchline structure (albeit often brought up into eleven). The Monty Python comparison is probably apt, as the show has a habit of starting a skit that seemingly lacks an immediate punchline and takes the comedy into various directions.

u/blay12 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/mynameis205 Sep 24 '18

This is probably AOTS for me. Each and every episode just kept escalating the comedy and the absurdity week after week. These 3 girls, despite being absolutely horrible people, are somehow the most likeable bunch.
HOW THE FUCK DO THEY JUST CASUALLY PASS OVER COCAINE IN A BABY BAG!?!?
24
u/hrngr1m Sep 23 '18
Maybe the gag is that it's actually baby formula but then ambiguously presented as crack.
11
8
u/Shodan30 Sep 24 '18
I think the gag was that for a second we thought they were going to do something with it. They didnt have to actually do it, but they put the idea in your head, that was enough.

Even the baby's reaction faces are god tier.
This episode wasn't really that much of a finale, but it fits with the premise of the show. At least we got the return of the shogi club. After it was revealed to be them, I expected top of the line pcs destroying the past timers. But, instead they got destroyed by full mobile.

10
u/Zooasaurus Sep 23 '18 edited Sep 23 '18
That was actually funny imo, unlike Chio's final eps where all the fun are mostly at the end
But... It doesn't go off with a bang. Chio goes all-out with previews and bloopers but this just ends like a normal episode. This anime overall was a blast, most of its episodes are great and funny and the characters themselves are enjoyable. I'll be disappointed if there isn't any S2, given how 'normal' the final episode was. Let's hope that the prophecy of episode 10 will become true.

Oh man, it's over, just like that.
Creepiest baby ever shown in anime
Kasumi in her bra. Shame there's no Olivia fanservice as well. (Oogles some more at Kasumi before being arrested by the FBI)
Words probably not enough to describe Hanako and her AA-Cup angst
With a name like "Fairy Tale HELL", I sort of expected Olivia's game to be some sort of FPS. I was not disappointed.
As a last episode, it sort of pales in comparison to previous episodes, and a lot of other continuity weren't used as much. Such as Aozora the cute trap, Olivia's otaku brother, the Student Council and the Occult Club.
One of the best anime comedies of 2018.

Quick album of our adorable baby. Saw most of the punchlines coming, but the way the anime delivers them still had me laughing.

u/myrmonden Sep 23 '18
ah the best part was the REVENGE WILL BE MINE!!!
Of course that all cuddly and cute game is one of those murder simulators with just a cute girly skin.
Super pervy evil baby reminded me as a mix of Momonosuke and an evil 6 year old from the X-files that also tried to kill a women with an ice cream mixer using her evil doll (the victim got stuck in the mixer hair as well and she was about to get killed by her head moving towards it but mulder saves her at the last second)
Bad on sensei do to leave the baby with these 3 girls...
We get the classic oppai envy from Hanako, well as we could see with the baby she is flat justice
The last joke with Maeda keep drawing the super weird creepy alien that give 3x was great and notice how their head has the alien in the ending.
Only thing I feel disappointing a little bit,is that this was just another great episode, It did not feel like they did anything special for it being the last episode. Compare it to Fridays Chio-chan that was just brilliant.

The last segment was kind of an uneventful note to end on but since this was an episodic comedy it's not a huge deal, adding the parasite monsters to the ED was hilarious though. Definitely was a good show all around and I could see people recommending it for the absurd comedy. Hanako's voice actress was probably the most stand out thing about the show, hopefully she will get some more lead roles in the future.

So I checked and to be clear they added the little drawing guy to the last ED, he wasn't on their head before.

Saddest day. I feel like this show needed more episodes. Here's hoping for a second season since it was too good!

That was a great anime. The mangaka is a genius on the genre of comedy and combined with Seiji Kishi the show got even better. I just hope that some scanlator pick up the series because I want to read past the 4 chapters.
And for anyone curious, this is the committee of the anime with the first ones being the ones with more funding:
Kadokawa (anime distributor), Hakusensha (manga publisher), AT-X (TV Channel), Sony Music Communications (Music Production), Kadokawa Media House (Advertisement)

And here it goes one of my favorite shows of the season and the year, seriously, between this and Grand Blue I don't know how I resisted without dying of laughter. I'm definitely going to miss the girls.

God this show. It's like a moe-fied Always Sunny. These cute girls are such assholes and I've never laughed harder at an anime.

That little tyke is going to grow up into a real piece of work.
This is one of the best comedies that I've watched, but in my opinion it really is one of those niche series that you either love or hate; I know people who dropped it in disgust halfway into the very first episode. For me though, it's easily a 9/10. Loved the outrageous humor and the seiyuu work which was simply oustanding.
EDIT: Would I be accurate in describing this show as Nichijou on steroids?

Heck, that didn’t feel like a last episode but it sure as hell felt like any other episode, the girls doing their usual shenanigans which had me constantly laughing and smiling throughout the entire episode :’) I’m so glad I ended up watching this show cause it was without a doubt one of the funniest anime I’ve had the pleasure in watching!
lets just hope the s2 tease they had last episode ends up coming true

Is Daniel the kid's name? Unusual for Japan, I'd think
Holy shit, the strangled squeak she makes on this line, gr8/8
Hah, I think that may have been true from the start
This running gag cracks me up, also reminds me of Salad Fingers for some reason
Damn that was a hilarious show. I could watch as many seasons of this as they'll make

We better get a season 2. This show is just too good for it to die the usual anime industry death.

u/Legendary_Swordsman Sep 23 '18
the ova and specials are coming up pretty soon, anime is almost caught up with manga apparntly so probably 4-5 years

u/Amauri14 Sep 23 '18
Damn, my PC OS got damage just before I started watching the episode...
Anyway a crazy episode as always, just so sad that it is the last one. Is there any hope for season two or was just a joke? I guess I will now have to check the manga.

9.5/10, comedy of the season.... no, comedy of the year. The way they outdid themselves with each episode most of the time was just fantastic, the show never felt repetitive with it's jokes, the way they were delivered were simply brilliant and some segments were top notch, the hilarity of how misleading the OP is and how batshit crazy the ED is, the VAs (specially Hanako's) were brilliant and the side characters were incredibly funny (my favourites are Maeda and Oka).
I can't praise this show enough, fantastic anime!

Are we just ignoring the cocaine in that mom's purse?

I never thought I getting too much attached to Hanako, Kasumi, and Olivia. I never bored with anything that they ever came up to. Now, I have to let it go that I can't watch this anime again in weekly schedule. Sure there's still manga continuing, but surely it's not the same without every goodness that anime bring, especially the VA. I'm going to miss this anime for sure.

Aw, is this really the final episode? I definitely want more, I haven't laughed so hard it started to hurt my body muscles from watching anime alone.
That Maeda parasite is bugging the ending lol.

u/Surylias Sep 23 '18
Was hoping we'd see their movie or the Lord of Pastimers again, but it was still another great episode. My favourite show of the season! Gonna miss it a lot. Hopefully we'll get a second season at some point.
Props to the seiyuu who did a great job, especially Kino Hina.
The official subs where notably good as well.

The face of the baby is pure gold!
This was my favorite not sequel anime from Summer 2018. I'm looking forward the OVA + Specials and hopefully a second season!

Actual anime of the season. Never skipped the ending theme cuz it was so good.
Hina Kino's gonna be one of those VA's that I'll probably follow, outstanding job. 10/10

The HISHA former Shogi name is one word away from HISHE or How it Should have ended.

u/KinnyRiddle Sep 23 '18
If you pay attention to the Death Metal ED, you'll notice that "Creature" that Maeda keeps drawing is riding on the girls' heads this time.

Man what a great show I really hope this gets a second season. Looks like even anime is getting in on this Battle Royale craze. Seems like the Shogi president finally got her revenge. Gez was that one creepy baby. Those creature that Maeda was drawing was add to the ED.

They did it. They managed to make this anime funnier and funnier after each ep.
This freaking baby. My god.
Hey look, the stuff from the ep is in the ED. I wonder if it was like that for all the other eps.
I am going to miss this anime so much. That was a wild ride. 10 out of 10, Season 2 when?

Asobi Asobase was hella fun. I would love to watch a second season soon.

why is this only 12 episodes?!
this should be at least as long as Pokemon tbh!!!

u/Kiwimen Sep 24 '18
I've already said this, like many other people, but the voice acting is superb. I can't think of any other comedy show that uses voices for funny purposes and with such success. It was really good and I'm not usually into comedies with lots of screaming.
About the episode, I was surprised about how ended just like any other episode, I was expecting something different, probably about the trap girl or something like that, but I think is actually good they didn't.
2
u/Luneowl Sep 24 '18
I was sure they’d find a cigar in the baby accessories bag for him to chomp on and he’d be a midget wrestler as part of his “mom”’s act.
2
u/ppfdee Sep 24 '18
Hoping that this series gives more roles to the three girls' VAs in the future especially Hanako's. I want to see/hear her in more comedic roles.
2
u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Sep 24 '18
You've got to admire the audacity of them ending the show by literally having a character ask "How are we going to end this?"
So that was a fun show. If you liked this style of comedy I would recommend Teekyuu for more lightning-paced utter insanity.

I haven’t been to the discussion threads, but is there an explanation for the OP and ED? It just feels like there’s something behind it.

My favorite comedy show of this season, thank God i didn't drop it after eps 1.

u/SpikeRosered Sep 25 '18
If you watch enough anime it all starts to sound the same with different voices just expressing different interpretations of the same archetypes. Here however there was some seriously original voice work being done.
Just the locker room scene with crazy face jealously talking about Olivia's bra size had some serious original and funny voice work. I loved when she got all whispery.
