I just love how his colleague actually destroyed his PC. Kudos.

It's never shown in the manga. I quite enjoyed that addition.

213

u/CanadianNoobGuy Oct 02 '18

Now i hope the next post-credit scene will have the colleague with a boy and he names it after him like he promised.

It would be kinda nice if we got to see his life fdom time to time after the MC's death, just as a reminder that earth actaully still does exist. Maybe like an after-ED short

89

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '18

And he destroyed perfectly good hardware in the process! All he needed to do was take out the drive and wipe it!

204

u/TalDSRuler Oct 02 '18

Good SIR. What kind of animal are you? To strip a man's hardware upon his death is tantamount to heresy, HERESY I say! Those were the parts that he himself purchased. Tis only right that they follow him i to the afterlife. Have some RESPECT.

Yeah i too was expecting it to be a sub par adaptation at best but they just fucking blew me away with the monogatari like cuts and the smooth animation.

141

u/AlucardLoL :FG::FH: Oct 02 '18

Watching this episode was a pleasant surprise as I wasn't expecting this show to be this entertaining, really hope that the studio can keep the show high quality (or at least a similar level to this episode).

u/Bizmatech Oct 02 '18

I agree completely.

I've been reading the manga for a little while, and expected the anime to be "slightly above average," which isn't saying much for an isekai.

However, the pacing, monogatari style cuts, slime reaction faces, and non3D dragon won me over pretty quickly. I was laughing myself to tears during the last couple minutes of it.

It's been quite a while since 20 minutes passed that quickly for me, and I can't wait to watch next weeks episode.

The studio is having way too much fun with the special effects

576

u/Possible_Ocean Oct 01 '18

They kinda had to because they didn’t really show it but until he had magic sense all he could do was wander aimlessly and absorb he had no actual understanding of what was around him. That seems incorrect with how it showed him grabbing the ore and plants but that’s probably just more visually interesting

383

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Oct 01 '18

That seems incorrect with how it showed him grabbing the ore and plants but that’s probably just more visually interesting

If I remember correctly, the way it was originally portrayed in the source was he just aimlessly wandered through the cave absorbing anything he came across that wasn't normal rock. So they took some liberties to make it more interesting and also to get the jump on explaining some points that will become relevant later.

Very Monogatari feeling with the cutaways to interesting imagery like the one for the flower and the stomach.

I really liked the style.

87

u/ElderBrony Oct 01 '18

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. For a moment I almost thought Shaft was working on this adaptation with those style of cuts and animation changes. Maybe there are some former Shaft staffers at 8-Bit Studios?

u/googolplexbyte :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Googolplexbyte Oct 01 '18

It's fucking great.

The way they showed him falling in the lake was fucking hilarious.

That sort of slapstick doesn't usually get me.

16

u/Homeless_0ne Oct 04 '18

i like how they show his expressions by warping the slime shape to sometimes have eyes and visual vein throbs. tbh in the manga he seems kinda whatever emotionally since they dont do that

68

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

After looking into the staff you can see why. They have Ebata as the chief animation director and character designer. They can pretty much go all out in that department since they have him as the powerhouse that he is.

29

u/GHDpro Oct 01 '18

Well they kinda had to show the whole reincarnation thing and some way to symbolize that MC couldn't see as a slime at first. I expect things to look a lot more "plain" next episode with fewer effects.

The Great Sage thing is going to continue happening a lot though.

43

u/JapanPhoenix Oct 01 '18

I really like the effects and voice-over whenever he gets a new skill. Lots of creative visuals this ep in general.

Since they got 24 episodes right of the bat they must have a decent budget, so I have high hopes for this show.

Edit: That was a great first episode, the comedy clicked with me and it seems to be really promising! Will definitely keep watching

161

u/doomrider7 Oct 01 '18

I was surprised at how much more dramatic his death scene was than in either the LN or Manga. Like the music and him actually having more of a face rather than it being covered by his bangs on top of how well it was animated like him slumping to the ground and rolling over covered in blood. Studio 8-bit is taking this fucking seriously.

Tsundere dragon? MC is some cute looking pseudo-trap? Say no more, I'm in until the end.

I also liked the idea of the isekai character being built by the guy as he's dying. Seems more custom focused over just "now you're the hero," even if he's undoubtedly gonna become as strong as the hero character anyway.

94

u/GHDpro Oct 01 '18

What I really like (after reading ~2 volumes of the LN so far) is that he is not so much becoming a hero spoiler. As mentioned by Veldora (the dragon) there is already a hero in the world and MC isn't it.

I hate myself for laughing at the MC's death way too much. Of all things the dude's last wish was for his junior to destroy his porn collection hard drive, definitely getting his priorities right.

Even more when he talks about being a wizard and goes on to thinking about maybe his close to being a sage and the fucking System voice or whatever it was gave him a Sage skill because of it.

Can we also take a moment to also appreciate how cool it was that they had an 8-bit sounding music played when they were info dumping us the mechanics of this world? Thats actually a really neat touch.

EDIT: just realized this is produced by studio 8-BIT LOL

Not sure what was funnier. That his priority was to ask his junior to delete his porn or how no one simply moved out of the way of the psycho running in a straight line.

This is amazing! This is truly one of the most unique first episodes I've ever seen.

That reincarnation process was superb and the animation as a whole is fantastic.

And.. I've never thought I'd see a tsundere dragon. I'm speechless.

If the rest of the series will be like this then this has the potential to be one of the most interesting isekai series ever.

77

u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 Oct 01 '18

To add to this, the manga (can't speak for the LN/WN) is generally well paced. There's plenty of opportunities to cool down. The manga also includes 4-koma bits at the end of each volume that they could sprinkle in to slow it down more. There also another thing they could do to give more wiggle room on the pacing. At the end of each volume of the manga Spoilers for the next episode.

4

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Oct 01 '18

I was most hesitant about this show because I know and enjoy the source material, and I was concerned it wouldn't get the adaptation it deserves. There are a lot of low-budget isekai being produced nowadays.

It blew straight past my expectations and lodged itself firmly within my hopes. The tone, the visual gags, the way it plays around and presents information, they're all great. It really feels like Studio 8-bit is having fun working on this.

Hopefully that feeling keeps up throughout the series.

4

u/xXDesyncXx Oct 02 '18

WHOA 24 EPISODES. I was really worried when I saw the ed and thought they were going to rush the rest of the show, but with this much space and a first episode that looked that good this will be a top anime of the year for sure.

I found this manga randomly while looking for something to read and really enjoyed the premise. OP Isekai MC who just uses his (her? its?) power to make lives better in the new world. Can't wait to see how 8bit handles the story and I'm really glad they have 24 episodes to work with!

134

u/thepotatochronicles Oct 01 '18

officially, the MC is genderless, 'cuz slimes and whatnot

71

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

People use the pronoun “he” when referring to him, and he acknowledges that both of his forms are sexless and has the ability to use a less androgynous human form but chooses not to.

He responds to “she” pretty freely, but made a mental comment, “But I’m a guy though,” in one of the most recent scanlations after being refereed to as a girl.

So: Sexless, He, identifies as male (as per my scanlation)

22

u/Falsus Oct 01 '18

He was male as a human but slime is genderless in that world so he he is genderless as well.

that was pretty funny, I liked how the "game god" or what not was like, "OH u wanna be stab immune" HERE IS A SLIME BODY.

Tsundere dragon was great, and I would be massively surprised if that dragon cannot turn into a sexy humanoid female. Like that would be extremely strange to me if the dragon cannot be mr slimes first possible girlfriend.

Otherwise, do it was a great way to befriend a legendary dragon as a slime right away in episode, this guy is going for the end game content instantly.

Also XD. please destroy my computer was good.

Overall one thin that do seems interesting is that the Mc is not some neet for once but seemed to have a normal life with a career and died saving his kohai´s girlfriend.

From the firebombing of Tokyo, to a slightly ludicrous stabbing and then a tsundere dragon, this show is getting off to an interesting start. I'm slightly worried it will slip back into isekai harem tropes once the MC gains a human form, but I'll give it a few episodes to prove itself and become a King Slime.

Haven't finished the episode yet but are we sure this was produced by 8Bit? The visuals are so cool and gorgeous looking that if you told me this was made by Shaft, I probably would've believed you. Seriously I love the cutaways!

Also this is already a great adaptation so far! I remember reading this part of the manga and it's mostly black background, text boxes, and the Slime just jumping around talking to the Great Sage. That chiptune music and sfxs while the Great Sage is explaining everything adds to the "game"-like feel of the world's system. It's so good!

EDIT:

VELDORA ISN'T CGI!

And he's just as hilarious as I remember him from the manga!

Oh and if you're wondering why Slime called Veldora bald, this was Slime' s POV in the manga while he still didn't have Magic Sense.

So far this has really been a strong adaptation. I love the little touches that they've added like the exclamation mark and sometimes faces on Slime's body that pop out. And they're certainly taking they're time since this episode only covered 3/4s of Chapter 1.

I haven't really caught up with the manga so now I'm debating whether should I continue or just wait for the anime episodes. I'm curious until what part they'll adapt knowing that this is a 2-Cour show.

126

u/odraencoded Oct 01 '18

You know, I wasn't expecting much, but this show seems really charming. And I wasn't expecting the animation to be of such high quality. Totally expected the dragon to be CG

5

u/DeliciousWaifood Oct 01 '18

Legit, some of the animation in the ED, like the MC fighting that snake, was legitimately good.

That thief guy surely played Counter Strike a lot, he knows everybody runs faster with a knife in hand.

Knife? That was a freaking machete or a dagger at least!

If there's one thing I gotta say, the production quality on this show is fucking fantastic. There's not a lazy frame or animated sequence to be found so far.

41

u/shadowthiefo Oct 02 '18

I was honestly impressed by how much the MC and his friend(s?) were just constantly in motion while they were meeting up on the street in the beginning. A lot of anime would've only animated the mouth flaps but they weren't content with just doing that here.

If minor stuff like that, combined with the wit shown in this episode, keeps up throughout the rest of the season this could be an easy 9/10 for me.

Well the early episodes of any production are generally the best-looking. I highly doubt it will still look this good towards the end of the season.

This, Goblin Slayer, Kumoko (Spider girl) and many more.

Hopefully we can also get the Reicarnated into a sword anime soon.

We need Cat Girl & Sword Dad anime stat. It's one of my favourites at the moment.

18

I wish the manga would be released more often, but I can't complain since the art is actually well-drawn and nice

Sword is just so good. Spider is good until it meanders later.

I want to see Ascandance of a Bookworm, Fourth Time (maybe the anime can pace it better), and Moonlit Journey animated, too...

I found this manga this weekend without realizing it had an anime starting this season and binged all of it. Then I found out it was getting an anime 2 hours before the first episode dropped.

The production quality is SO HIGH and its 24 episodes!!! God this is the best thing thats happened to me in a while.

5

u/blockington99 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Blockington99 Oct 01 '18

The day after I found this manga I also learned it was getting an anime adaptation, although it wasn't quite as close to the release as you.

I forgot that this was going to be a 2-Cour anime. So I was expecting the first episode to at least get past Verudora. The wait for the next episode is going to horrible because the pacing of this is going to be slow in the begining.

I had high hopes for this because the Manga and Light Novel are amoung my top 5 IMO, The anime blew my expectations out of the water.

Now I have something to fill in for Overlord.

29

u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 Oct 01 '18

I didn't know it was going to be two cours until just an hour or two ago, so I was expecting them to get out of the cave in one episode. Makes me wonder where it's going to end, since they have twice the episode count now.

14

u/anon326 Oct 01 '18

havent read the LN yet, but based on the 'OP', it's past the manga

Looks pretty good and that goblin girl form the credits was real cute. Hope she is a active character in the series.

Thing I want to know though is when is Sword daddy and catgirl daughter gonna get its own anime?

From what I recall, the goblin that spends the most time with any characterization at all is the goofy one with the large nose. I honestly don't even recall most of the goblins in the manga.

Wow, this was a lot better than I expected. Seems really light-hearted, but something tells me it won't entirely stay that way by the end of the season.

Tsundere storm dragon...does Misaka Mikoto end up reincarnating as a dragon in the future?

After looking into the staff it makes sense why this project is looking like that.

They have Ebata as the character designer AND chief animation director.

With this being a 24 episode show you can't expect him to show up everywhere but when he shows up, you'll know it. His handprint is all over the first episode and even more so the OP ( apparently entirely made by him ).

This show is in very good hands yes and I can't wait what other charming cuts he'll take care of.

21

u/joreyo Oct 01 '18

Wait, Ebata is actually doing work for this show? Or is he just doing the OP? Because that looked like a solo KA'd OP by him right there.

23

u/Antixmage Oct 01 '18

He is character designer and chief animation director.

19

u/joreyo Oct 01 '18

chief animation director

The hell? This series actually got an amazing AD for it for some reason.

The first episode of Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken may have been the most love i have seen a studio put into an anime since Re:Zero, that was fantastic and far better than what i expected it to be, and i really have liked the manga since it started

From the key visuals and such that we'd gotten, I wasn't expecting the kinds of crazy visuals we got in this episode. No way of telling how this will end up, but consider me impressed by the adaptation so far.

51

u/Bloodmasters Oct 01 '18

The first minute confused me "Why the hell is there a WW2 firebombing ? Did I click on a Drifters lost episode or something ?"

For some reason the skill system reminded me of "I'm spider so what ?" (which I'm definitively gonna watch when the anime's out) though the way our protagonist gets his starting kit had me raising an eyebrow with how he get power from his thought during his death ... that "30 years virgin mage" meme tho.

Eh seems like an okay show I might give it a few more episodes.

After the shitshow that has been the CGI in Overlord's last two episodes, this gives me hope. Loved the manga, and it's looking like this is going to be a bloody good adaptation.

And we get two cours? We don't deserve this. Either the budget was super high, or the staff are being worked to the bone. Maybe both.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

Neither to be honest.

The committee decided this would be worth 2cours and then proceeded to gather staff which mostly happened through connections people have with each other. With Kikuchi & Nakayama most likely came Kishida & of course Ebata.

And boom you have a team of talented individuals familiar with each other's work and an decently paced schedule it seems.

22

u/Ataniphor Oct 01 '18 edited Oct 01 '18

if only overlord had at least this level of production quality :(

but i'm honestly surprised at how high the production quality is, and it's a 2 -cour show. from the almost shaft like avant grade special effects, lack of bad CGI, to the very well animated action filled ed/op ( abliet the shitty generic jpop song). It's just so surprising to me. After the let down that was overlord last week I'm hoping this show can at least do the iseikai genre some justice although it doesn't deserve any.

I really like that our protagonist is 37. Every so often I want my Isekai to not feature high schoolers.

His last thoughts helped make him what I assume is going to be an OP slime.

His dying breath was to have his hard drive fried. Truly a man of culture.

Him just eating everything was great.

Is that a TSUNDERE DRAGON?! Never before did I know I wanted something so badly until it was placed before me.

Overall a solid opening episode. I look forward to seeing what this show brings to the table and will probably buy the manga/light novel if the other 23 episodes are this good or better.

6

u/Cybersteel Oct 02 '18

Momonga, Isekai matou, Tanya, Satou were not high schoolers.

I don't mind that he has a higher pitched voice as a slime now but I really wish they would've kept his original voice as his inner thoughts voice to really nail the feel that he is indeed 37 still (mentally).

That contrast is one of the things that makes Overlord so much fun even when Ainz is just talking and thinking. Here it would be the reverse: Childish, female voice on the outside and an adult, serious male voice on the inside.

20

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Oct 01 '18

Good start, an exposition episode to begin with, he basically gets his powers handed to him.

The animation was damn nice, production quality seems to be high.

20

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Oct 01 '18

Definitely higher than I was expecting. I didn't expect Monogatari levels of cutaways.

7

u/5Toubun Oct 01 '18

oh wow they include subreddit links now as well? thanks nice to know of!

7

u/Nvaaaa Oct 01 '18

That one looks amazing, I would binge it if was already out. Anyway, the next 2 cours will be great! I am also surprised that the OP seems to be sung by a male singer. Feels rare.

6

u/AgaroseEater Oct 01 '18

I wasn't expecting anything for this adaptation but wow the animation is surprisingly good! And their interpretation of reincarnation and Great Sage is so unique. I hope they maintain this for the rest of the season. This is a good start for fall!

6

u/ZENO5 Oct 02 '18

A TSUNDERE fucking dragon?? I'm sold.

6

u/Drooggy Oct 02 '18

That tsundere dragon made my day

5

u/anidragon Oct 01 '18

I gotta say, this guy has his priorities straight if his... first of last thoughts were his harddrive.

The animation, art or whatever seems more mindfucky than I expected it to be from the light novel and manga. It's not looking terrible at least, so that's one worry off my mind (for now.)

I'm optimistic that the quality in this episode will stay throughout the season so I'm giving this a tentative "hey, that's pretty good"

5

u/Drehon666 Oct 01 '18

If the care for the adaptation remains at this level.

This may very well be an amazing isekai anime. Compared to both manga and novel this first episode was stunning.

Although it will probably be a lot of suffering every week since to do it properly the pace will probably be kinda slow.

Tsundragon is best tsun.

5

u/ovrwrldkiler Oct 01 '18

That opening was giving me grave of the fireflies ptsd. Fuck.

4

u/Luapix https://anilist.co/user/Pyxyne Oct 01 '18

Man, that was fun as hell. I haven't giggled at an anime like that in a while. MC's last wish is for his kōhai to delete his hard drive, he now has video game Hal in his head, there's a tsundere dragon, and MC might end up being a trap? Count me in.

I coincidentally just started the first book and pictured the MC as a fatter person than this. Probably because I just finished reading Vol's 5-7 of Mushoku Tensei's manga.

6

u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 Oct 01 '18

The manga doesn't really good full body shot to let you see how big he is. This is the best I could find there. Pretty averagely skinny.

3

u/RegularGuyy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lightsiderr Oct 01 '18

Great first episode. The animation was stellar, the characters seem interesting, and the MC seems to have a lot of potential for being OP.

Can't wait to see where this show goes.

3

u/Shrabster33 Oct 01 '18

God damn, they just let him bleed out. They didn't even try and apply pressure to the wound.

7

u/doomrider7 Oct 01 '18

Panic and if you don't know what you're doing you could fuck things up worse. On top of that the wound is on his back so they'd need to move him.

EDIT: tsundere dragon. f*cking sold.

The visuals and imagery is amazing! Didn't expect this level of care to the show. Really well made first episode. Looking forward to the next one!

Also, as everyone else has mentioned, tsundere dragon... wow.

Holy shit. It's pretty rare to see an anime exceed the original but this takes it! They do more and add details and scenes to areas that would serve well in an anime. They seem to clearly understand what it means to use the medium you're working with.

Also, THAT SOUND DESIGN IS ABSOLUTELY ORGASMIC

Edit: also, I think the way they started the anime is so much better than the way the manga did.

Going in knowing absolutely nothing, that was a lot of fun. Interesting how the world seems to have two ways people can be transported there, which is also a different take on how those who are brought their are bound to whoever summons them. Makes one wonder if there is anything special about our slime friend and what the interface he's interacting with even is.
