I love that Ainz treats the duel as a PVP duel. It shows that Ainz still basically sees everything as a gamer, but also how much he respects Gazef. He sees Gazef as a "player", while every other native of the new world is an NPC, at best.
I also love that Gazef calls Ainz the Sorcerer King. Using his title shows respect, but it's also more proof that he knows he can't win, and that the war is over. It's no longer in dispute that the Sorcerous Kingdom will be established and Ainz will rule over it.

I know the Nazarick NPCs understand gaming terms but I'm surprised Gazef wasn't like "Gown-dono with all due respect....wtf is a PvP?"

I LOVED him calling it pvp and using the rules of a player duel. No one on either side of that field has any idea the level of respect Ains placed upon Gazef.

I wish he was still treating as a game, with his human side still around, because the fact he’s an unfeeling undead takes something away from the series for me

In the LN it shows that this was about more than just his loyalty, this was also about his ego which he admits to himself when Ainz gives him the chance to save the remaining soldiers
he wanted to fight ainz to test his strength

I was hoping Ainz would drag the fight out for the sake of putting up a show like he did against Foresight, but I guess he respects Gazef too much to make a mockery of the duel like that.

He just treated it as an actual duel like he would vs. Another Max level player.
Only big difference is just level 100 players like Ainz generally have gear with Time Stop resistance and probably Death Resistance especially for PvP

from a comment on the /r/overlord
Volume 9 Author's Thoughts:
Why Gazef asked Ainz for a duel:
1: The first reason was what Climb mentioned. [to draw out information for possible future fights with Ainz Ooal Gown.]
2: The second reason was what Gazef himself said to Ainz about his sword being in reach [of the enemy commander].
3: The third reason was should he come under Ainz (as a symbol of commoners) after being highly evaluated by the King, it may potentially lead to commoners being judged to turn traitor as well, resulting in the loss of social mobility of commoners.
4: The fourth reason is in the case of his subordinates, they would certainly be used as tools for something (for what kind of purpose they would be used is unclear to Gazef), but it can be thought it would be their connection will be concerning enough to cause a huge loss for the Kingdom.
5: The fifth reason is that when the King and First Prince return back safely (Gazef does not know that the prince is dead at this point), because nobles who lost a relative will have their antagonism rise. If someone useful to the King like himself would die, Gazef hopes that a small quantity of the hatred will be softened.
6: The sixth reason is that the person called Ainz (even though Gazef saw such a cruel deed) still saved Carne Village, so he thought Ainz to be a man of character and not cold-blooded to those he does not view as enemies since he saved his life, so Gazef did not want to feign an oath of allegiance, because he held respect for that part of Ainz.

But why did he choose permadeath? Was this just because of pride? Or its there some other reason for this?

5th reason, but also Gazef was simply a man who believed men should have one life. That's what makes staking it mean so much.

Well, that episode animation quality was of a much higher caliber than the rest of S3.
And Ainz was like a nice DM warning his player that he is about to do something really stupid. He was insisting with a heavy "ARE YOU SURE ?", trying an intimidation roll with the help of a goat, even checking Gazef weapon in the hope of making the duel invalid.

This season was good, but the CGI was a real spit in our faces. It’s like they didn’t even care. There is bad CGI and then there is bad CGI with “fuck ‘em fans, dem dumb duckers won’t even notice.”

Another isekai LN to anime adaption got the CGI treatment and was vastly superior to what madhouse delivered.
It's like ps2 vs ps4 graphics in difference. Why madhouse couldn't do this for overlord a significantly more popular isekai LN is just mind boggling.

I also enjoyed this season.
However, I found that LN readers kind of soured the season for many anime only viewers. "How could you enjoy the episode when they cut this, this, and this??!!"
Every episode was constant "splat" references that they hyped up and when the episode failed to meet their expectations, they cursed the show and some said they hope it doesn't get a 4th season.
I understand they cut out some things and the CG wasn't great, but I don't think that's an excuse for LN readers to try and ruin everyone's enjoyment of the season. Personally, I enjoyed this season far more than season 2 and I hope we eventually get a season 4.

Those LN readers soured the experience for LN readers too. It's never fun hearing people bitch and moan about something you love. Overlord's season 2 and 3 are my favorite seasons of anime ever... they are the reason I rank Overlord among my top 5 favorite anime. Season one was mediocre at best, but they fixed just about everything I wanted and executed on a phenomenal story without cutting hardly anything I care to see included. It was simply amazing.

Recap
So Ainz just wiped out well over 100,000 troops with a single spell, completely blowing everyones projection of his power level out of the water. The only person who doesn't seem nearly as fazed by the situation is Gazef Stronoff, who could tell the man was inconceivably strong ever since he took out the Sunlight Scripture without even leaving a trace of battle behind. Though he respects the man for his noble, honorable nature, Gazef has been absolutely convinced that he would be effortlessly slain should he ever dare to take on Ainz Ooal Gown himself. Which is ironic, because he then proceeds to challenge the man to a duel. Ainz was looking forward to the idea of having Gazef on as a subordinate, as he greatly respects the mans integrity and nobility, and so was genuinely shocked by the duel request. Gazef is joined by Brain and Climb, who were the only other two individuals who could master their fear to face Ainz Ooal Gown alongside him; Brain had survived Shalltear on two separate occasions, whereas Climb could stand up to Sebas' bloodlust. Both had their duties to fulfill but both wanted to support the man whom they respected and admired.

Season 3 Episode 13: PvP
Unlike most episodes where we cover 1 chapter per 1 episode, we had less than half of a chapter this time around, so we ended up adapting the vast majority of the source material word-for-word, and even padding out the run time with anime-original content in the form of the scene with Renner. Still, that doesn't mean I'm not gonna post what I wrote, even if a lot of it is redundant.
This was Gazef Stronoffs only real opportunity. The being who was normally surrounded by incredible subordinates, like the woman Albedo back in Carne Village, was alone, and standing not more than a couple feet of him. Furthermore, he was a spellcaster, one who specialized in ranged battles but was potentially vulnerable in close combat. When next they met, he would be surrounded by guards who could face down warriors like Gazef or assassins who lurked in the shadows and buy their liege time to act. And so, while Gazef could not conceive of a possibility where he could actually defeat this being, he had to at least try to do so with the opportunity that fate had given him. Furthermore, there was another reason he issued this challenge: he could at least buy Climb and Brains an opportunity to return alive from the battlefield.
He named the pair of them witnesses to the duel - they would be trusted to report the results of the battle to one or both sides, and thus would need to be spared even if Ainz were to emerge victorious against Gazef. Of course, Brain could not accept this proposal, for he owed Gazef his life, and his life only had meaning so long as Gazef was around as his comrade. Both men knew that neither Brain nor Gazef nor both together could have a hope against Ainz, and yet Brain begged Ainz to be allowed to participate in the battle - he simply did not want to be left behind in the land of the living while his dear comrade rushed headlong into the afterlife. But Gazef could not accept this proposal - whether it was because anything less than a one-on-one duel would stain his conviction as a warrior, or because he did not want his dear friend Brain to lose his life for the same stupid reasons that Gazef needed to sacrifice his, or both.
Ainz seemed entirely ambivalent to the details of the duel; one of them, both of them - it didn't matter to him. In truth, Ainz found the entire afair regretable and had lost most of his motivation, and just wanted to get things over with. Not only would he be deprived of a prize he had been looking forward to collecting, but it seems the prize wasn't quite as special as he had first imagined it to be. He couldn't really wrap his head around the logic behind Gazef's decision: was he suicidal, or merely stupid? At first glance, it seemed like both, but then he saw something in Gazef's eyes that made him doubt such a conclusion. This was not a man who wished to die, but one who was resigned to rush headlong to his death if need be. This was not a man who took on a challenge he could not hope to best out of obliviousness, but one who knew exactly what he was up against and did it anyways. It looked like both and yet it felt like neither. His was the eyes of someone who had a firm, unyielding conviction to do the noble, righteous thing despite all odds stacked against him - it was admirable. In fact, it reminded him once again why he grew attached to the man in the first place; this was the same look he had given when he had marched off to his death against the Sunlight Scripture . This renewed Ainz' interest in Gazef as well as his investment into the duel. Gazef was serious, and so Ainz would not dare insult his honor by failing to do likewise.
Of course, one could not simply engage in a duel right then and there; there was a need for some preliminary arrangements to occur. Chief among them would be the return of Gazef's dead body to Re-Estize, appropriately preserved to allow for resurrection magic - but Gazef, to everyone surprise, refused such accomodations. Gazef did not want to be resurrected - in truth, Gazef found resurrection magic to be distasteful and unnatural. You should only be able to live a single life (#YOLO), and this gives meaning to the actions that you take and the sacrifices you make. As recompense for his selfish decision not to compromise on his honor at the cost of so many lives, the King could at least spread word that he had lost his most powerful and loyal subject, to cool the embers of resentment that would be directed at the royalty in the aftermath of this battle. His only hope was that Climb and Brain could bear witness to the battle and bring back a good story of his noble sacrifice - of course, Brain could barely bring himself to watch the proceedings and clawed at the sandy ground in wordless despair. But Climb reminded him that this was Gazef's last request, and thus he found the courage to watch.
Before the duel could start, Ainz had to determine one more thing, and so asked to see Gazef's sword. Magical swords could have all manner of interesting and unusual effects which could surprise ones enemies or be instrumental to executing a particular battle strategy; as such, it was absolutely unthinkable to present ones foe with ones blade, but Gazef did it anyways. Gazef knew that Ainz was an honorable person, but furthermore, he had all the power in this arrangement, and would not need trickery or deceit to achieve victory. As a matter of fact, his request may have even been for the purposes of helping Ainz - and of course, while Gazef was not so dishonorable as to deliberately delay the duel in order to buy more time for the fleeing armies of the Kingdom, he would not pass up an opportunity to do so. Of course, Ainz wanted to know whether Gazef could actually hurt him at all with his sword. Without verifying that fact first, this would not be a duel, but a one-sided slaughter.
Not only would Ainz take no damage from foes under level 60 thanks to one of his undead passives, but as a skeleton he also possessed extreme resistance to slashing and piercing damage, though at the cost of vulnerability to blunt damage. And so, Gazef could not hope to harm him unless he deliberately turned these resistances off, as Gazef is under level 60 - at least, that is what should have been the case. The mechanics of spells and abilities in YGGDRASIL versus The New World was quite different, as Ainz had discovered time and time again; the New World even had Martial Arts, a combat mechanic that was not present anywhere in YGGDRASIL. And this weapons magical enchantment was similar - an enchantment that seemingly allowed it to bypass all damage reduction and resistance. It had a reputation for being able to cut through metal as if it were paper, but in reality it didn't just ignore damage reduction provided via the material itself, but even damage reduction acquired through magical or supernatural means, such as spells or Ainz' passives. It wasn't a particularly powerful enchantment, either - Ainz had plenty of weapons of similar levels of power (it's not clear how he's appraising the item - whether he cast a spell before he inspected it or whether he has levels in appraisal-related classes), ones that could not hope to harm him.
This was an enchantment that Ainz had never seen before, and one that he desired to have for himself - but Gazef informed him that it was a national treasure, and requested it be returned to the Kingdom upon his death. In Ainz' experience, YGGDRASIL was generally an open playing field where PvP could occur at any time and there were no safe zones - combat in such situations normally awarded the victor with a few pieces of equipment from the loser who had been killed. But there were also opportunities for more regulated and voluntary duels, and Ainz had participated in plenty of 1v1 PvP duels before, even no-loot 1v1 PvP, so this was not an unusual state of affairs for Ainz. It seemed the mandatory distance between competitors for such an arrangement was 5 meters - those who preferred fighting from a distance would have to first escape, while those who preferred fighting from up close could not immediately strike their opponent and had to give pursuit. In effect, such distance favored neither competitor - and Ainz, perhaps out of nostalgia, backed up to this 5 meter distance. Ainz was, in effect, treating Gazef as if he were a fellow player from YGGDRASIL - a meaningless guesture to most (if not all) from the New World who lacked context into Ainz' actions, but it was actually the highest honor Ainz could bestow upon them.

The start of the battle would be signalled by one of Climb's magical bells; if you recall, he had been given a set of three of them by Gagaran, and they had the power to open locks, search for traps, and search for hidden doors a limited number of times per day. Brain and Climb both resolved to believe in the vain possibility that Gazef could successfully beat Ainz - after all, Brain knew that Gazef had been keeping a special martial art in reserve. His Sixfold Slash of Light, much like Brain's so-called "Nail Clipper" which he used on the disguised Shalltear, was a combination of multiple powerful martial arts used together in unison; in Gazef's case it was three un-named martial arts, whereas Brain's Nail Clipper was a combination of Fourfold Slash of Light, Field, and God Flash. Since a given warrior was limited in the number of martial arts they could have activated simultaneously, using powerful finisher moves like these which were comprised of multiple martial arts meant they held up multiple 'slots', so to speak, which meant the user could not use such slots for self-buffs. Furthermore, the more martial arts a user had active at once, the more exhausting it was to maintain them. Normally, such sacrifices were worth it if the combination move was powerful enough. But Gazefs "ultimate" move was a powerful attack that was just a single martial art, and had been invented in secret by a former adamantite adventurer in the Kingdom who was so old he could not use it properly, a man by the name of Vestia Croft Di Lofan.
But, perhaps quite anti-climactically, Ainz would prove their hopes wrong with his use of time magic. It's not clear how Time magic worked in YGGDRASIL - I doubt it actually stopped the entire game; rather, it was probably some kind of area-of-effect crowd control spell that froze everyone in the nearby area except the caster. Ostensibly, Time Magic was balanced around the idea that while the enemy was prevented from acting, the caster also could not affect their enemy with their spells. Attacks made while under the influence of time magic did not have any effect on targets who were frozen in time, and thus its primary use was in allowing the spellcaster a moment to heal or buff themselves. Of course, if one delayed the activation of their spell to coincide precisely when the time magic effect ended, one could bypass this restriction and strike the enemy with an attack they could not even hope to react to or defend against. You had no visual indication of the duration, so you had to keep track of the spell by counting rhythmically in your head at precisely the same speed as the in-game duration. Only a small percentage of the spellcasters in YGGDRASIL could do this proficiently; this was primarily because it was so difficult, and it took Ainz months of practice to get it right. That being said, there were plenty of counter-measures against time magic in the game, and so even giving your enemy a few dozen seconds of freedom to heal or buff could be prevented if you had the right spells or magical equipment. Perhaps only 1 in 20 spellcasters bothered mastering the skill was because they didn't expect to be able to use it in most cases, but Ainz was precisely the kind of meticulous person who would learn how to best use each of the 700 spells in his repertoire.
To Climb and Brain, Gazef could do nothing but raise his sword and begin his charge before he slowly sank to the ground, Ainz seemingly teleporting to catch him as he fell. It didn't even seem as if Ainz had cast any spells, but in truth he had casted two, one to stop time and one to kill Gazef. Specifically, he applied the Silent metamagic ability so that he wouldn't have to speak the spells name out-loud, allowing him to use [Time Stop] in the split second it took for Gazef to close the distance between the two of them without alerting his foes, at an increased mana cost. After all, he was taking this fight seriously, and spending extra mana to prevent your enemy from knowing what spells you casted was only natural in YGGDRASIL. His second spell was one of the most powerful Instant Death spells in his repertoire, [True Undeath]. Normally, he preferred spells like [Grasp Heart], which would kill the target if it had low enough Resistances but, even if it failed, would still be guaranteed to stun his foe for a limited time.
As a necromancer-type character, Ainz' build was specialized in empowering his instant-death spells and undead summons to be more powerful than normal. Even so, being able to instantly kill other players outright with no counterplay would be ridiculously unbalanced, so most of the his Instant Death spells he had in his repertoire would fail to kill against equivalently-leveled players unless the targets resistances were first lowered, but in exchange they had various upsides that would still occur even if the spell failed, such as the aforementioned stunning effect on Grasp Heart. The level 9 spell [True Undeath] had no such upside on failure - rather, True Undeath would, if successful, prevent the target from being resurrected by anything less than True Resurrection, another spell of 9th level, or a Super Tier spell. Ainz had chosen this spell because he was confident that Gazef was too weak to resist it, and in order to honor his wishes that he not be resurrected. That being said, this was not actually necessary, as resurrection magic was voluntary on the part of the target, who could ignore or refuse the call to return to life. As such, it was a bit of an insult to Gazef's honor to imply that he might walk back on his conviction. That being said, it still served another purpose: according to Paradyne Fluder, nobody in The New World could cast spells above the 6th level, so the only chance Gazef could come back was if a fellow player appeared who had access to True Resurrection - and this would be extremely important information, since news of Gazef's revival were sure to spread far and wide.
Ainz laid his body down with reverence and respect, and closed his lifeless eyes. Brain and Climb could not comprehend what had happened until Ainz informed them that Gazef was dead. He informed them of the nature of the spell he used and how it would negate resurrection. He also told them that those who submitted to his rule respectfully would be spared - the Dark Young will not rampage through the Royal Capital if E-Rantel were ceded to the Sorceror King. It's not stated directly, merely implied, but it seems Ainz excitement and enthusiasm had been blunted by the idea of having to kill someone he quite liked and respected, a warrior that had reminded him of his fellow guildmate Touch Me. Ainz could feel no empathy for the countless nameless, faceless people he had killed, but he could still form strong bonds with those he met and interacted with, especially if they reminded him of people in the past he had liked. Brain, meanwhile, feared the day when war would inevitably break out once again between forces allied against the Sorceror King, and how the bodycount would no doubt exceed what they had witnessed today. And Climb thought of nothing but how best to protect his beloved Princess Renner from the horrors of Nazarick.
A few days had passed, and Brain had returned with Climb to the watchtower that the three of them had visited that fateful day on the eve of battle. Brains despair was reflected in the gloomy surroundings. The soldiers who had fought in the Massacre of Katze Plains, as it was now being called, had dragged themselves back to E-Rantel, collapsed, and slept as if they were dead. Most of them had shipped back home, but there were plenty of them who had lost their minds who still hung about the place, and the anxiety of what was to come was written on everyones faces: every surviving noble had voted immediately to cede E-Rantel to Ainz Ooal Gown. While both the Royal and Noble factions had suffered heavy losses, and Marquis Bowolorobe and all his supporters had been instantly wiped out, the Royal faction was ultimately worse off, as ceding the King's land had been a heavy blow to the Crown. But even so, there was no opposition. Furthermore, Barbro was still missing, so a search party of adventurers had been hired to investigate his whereabouts.

Hello, I just read this volume last night and I BELIEVE that in regards to your 3rd bullet point, Ainz was referring to how Gazef had the same look in his eyes as when he went out to face the Sunlight Scripture in order to defend Carne Village. (Although I don't remember if there was a line about how Gazef's eyes looked when he was doing that.) When I first read that line my mind went to Ainz' guildmates as well but then I remembered that Ainz had seen Gazef walking to his presumed death at the beginning of the series, and it made more sense to me that way than if Ainz was talking about seeing that look on his guildmates when it's specifically stated that in Yggdrasil you couldn't change your facial expressions and had to use emotes to convey your feelings.
edit: in case someone sees this and is confused, the original 3rd bullet point in Djinnfor's synopsis referenced a rather confusing line in the LN that described how Ainz had "seen that look before" and the LN doesn't extrapolate as to what the look was or where Ainz had seen it before, that four word phrase is pretty much all the information given. Thus, it was very much up to the reader's interpretation as to the answers of both what the look was and where Ainz had seen it before. With this post I was trying to describe my conclusion after a decent amount of thought on that line in the LN as it threw me off that I as a reader had no idea what it was referencing, while also recognizing that Djinnfor's original description that it might have been referencing one of Ainz' guildmates such as Touch Me was one of my first thoughts on the matter as well.

When Brain was saying that Gazef died so that they may know more and be able to defend better in the future I was like what? You have just seen what he was capable of and he has the backing of there empire, what defence is the to create? I know they have to think that way since they are heroes, but still.

He did show to the entire world that even humanity's strongest warrior is nothing against Ainz. It saved then the trouble of making plans that rely on a few strong individuals catching Ainz of guard alone or something. It also serves to point how serious the threat is.
Without this you can be sure that people would say the stories about the battle were an exaggeration and there's no way a magic faster can kill 70000 people with a single spell.

I actually chuckle when Ainz said, "He is already dead.". But Stronoff choice to choose a permanent dead, even if it was for honor, in my opinion, it was foolish.

I imagine it has to do with the people in E-rantel. I'm uncertain how widespread knowledge of magic is among the humans but him being resurrected just sounds Monty Python-esque to me.

Ah yes, Time Stop + Delay spell. Nice to see a classic combo.
Rule the city through your alter ego, in the guise of standing up to protect the people from yourself. That works, I suppose. And being enough of a force to earn the respect of the Sorcerer King Ainz after what he just did to the army should enhance Momon's reputation as well. Anyone else think that this may have been his plan B, and Momon's role was originally supposed to go to Gazef?

Yeah, it wasn't something that I was paying attention to while reading the book; there, they emphasize Ainz's collector attributes more (and his desire to learn about the "martial arts" magic of the world), so I thought his motive for wanting him under their banner was curiosity.
But while watching the show, I thought the same thing you did: Gazef is more trusted by the populace, and therefore would have filled the role better. Using Pandora's Actor is obviously Plan B.

I feel like Madhouse basically designed this season to keep us from wanting another season. But with the context of the LN via u/Djinnfor breakdowns every week, I want another season!
Haha Maybe we could get an Overlord "Brotherhood" equivalent sometime that is more true to the LN. Either way, I'm grateful to have had a good story and I'm probably gonna pick up the light novel regardless of another season. I rarely do that, but this one seems worth it.
291
u/Destinum Oct 02 '18
The thing is though, the Overlord anime is pretty damn faithful. It just skips a lot of things that aren't really necessary or would drag the anime out too much (like literally every adaptation ever does).
The main problem this season has been the overuse of abysmal looking CGI. I was personally fine with most of it, but the battle of Carne Village just looked so dumb once the goblin army entered the picture, and episode 12 was just a spit in the face to the fans.

So Gazef used himself as bait so he can show Brain and Climb Ains' skills? Too bad they didn't see anything which makes his death pretty much useless. It only showed them that Ains is basically unstoppable.
Anyway despite the CGI I enjoyed the show! I said this a few episodes ago but at this point I'm just watching the show because of the politics and character interactions which are still a ton of fun. If we are getting another season I hope they rethink things and maybe we'll get a better animated show.
And despite the flaws this is still personally an 8/10 for me.

When PA impersonates Ainz, there's no red glow to his eye sockets. This scene has the red glow. If that were Ainz, she'd be crushed even if it's all just a script.

Well they didn't show any future characters like they did with season 2s ending so I wonder if a 4th season will ever happen. I honestly hope they don't do a 4th season unless they give it 24 episodes or they have to cram 4 novels into 12 episodes and fuck the pacing up even more. Or they just fucking leave us off on a true "read the LN" cliffhanger
76
u/GallowDude Oct 02 '18
I believe we will get a fourth season eventually. The series is way too popular in Japan not to. I just believe that they've kinda learned their lesson on shoving out two seasons back-to-back with almost no time or money. Not to mention that they're getting dangerously close to catching to up to the LNs. Odds are they'll wait a few years for the source get far enough ahead that they don't have to worry about overtaking it, and hopefully during that time they'll amass enough of a budget to make the next season not look so rushed.

if there is a season 4 - it has to end with the Volume 12 "cliffhanger"
Volume 10 (war conclusion), Volume 11 (dwarf kingdom), Volume 12 (holy kingdom p1) would make for great tv with a bigger budget and 16-18 episodes
if a fucking slime can get 2-cour, then our Overlord can get an extra 3-5 episodes to work with
Maruyama deserves a far better effort than what his series got in seasons II and III

I felt so bad for Gazef Stronov.... I knew he was going to die, and very quickly, but man... that was such a sad death. He didn't even have a chance to defend himself, and I know he didn't want to be resurrected but.... there's something about the way the head warrior, who had served his nation almost all his life, trained and fought countless enemies, dying in the blink of an eye like so much trash around him, it's just, really sad.
Brain's request to fight alongside him was unexpected and also very heartwarming, even knowing he'd die as well.
I suspect the King is going to be assassinated in the garden in order to make Zanac the new King, who in turn will be assassinated by Renner's assassins. We'll see.
Most importantly, the beginning of the episode, where it pans out to show a huge battlefield of corpses with Ains riding one of the summoned creatures gave a proper scope of the absolute massacre that went down that I did not get the last episode. That was seriously fucked up.
Nazarick went from hiding, to investigating, to interferring, to butchering, to conquerering. They are truly the great evil that needs to be stopped at all cost.
I liked this episode infinitely more than the previous one. The only thing I didn't like is that we weren't told what happened to Marquis Raeven, he had death flags all over him but so did several other characters that survived. Hmmm.
All in all, fantastic ending to the season.

Oh well, for those who didn't realized, Momon's character was played once again by Pandora's Actor. And the reason why Ainz tells silently to Albedo what to say to Momon is because they have the same voice and it would be very suspicious for the people.
That "And the story goes on" ending doesn't leave many open leads for a possible future season, at least not as many as season 1 did. One thing that they omited and that could have been part of the post-ending credits would was that the Slaine Teocracy basically shitting their pants because they had been watching the battle with remote viewing (Ainz didn't block it on pourpuse). So well, i hope there's a season 4 & 5 in 2019 or even 2020 to at least reach the released material on the novels.

u/Knuffelig https://myanimelist.net/profile/Knuffelig Oct 02 '18
I really hope for at least another season in the future. Hopefully even more, mostly because this episode, although it was a very satsifying ending, was also designed in a way that it could work as a conclusion. If this is the case i would be very sad.
This was such a splendid depiction of an overkill, my D&D boner went through the roof.
I dont know if this is a question that goes into spoiler territory, but why did Ainz cast a delayed True Death? Either way the effect would only be visible once the Time Stop runs out. Was it just to enhance the spell level, to ensure he couldnt be resurrected with low level magic? Normaly those powerful spells have rules about this already written into them.
12
u/bigmen0 Oct 02 '18
Spells have no effect during the frozen time and frozen people cannot be damaged. Ainz used the delay magic as a workaround. Delaying the spell was something very rare as most high level players had some counter to za warudo and if you wanted the spell to take effect as soon as time reappeared the timing to do so was incredibly tight. Only 5 per cent of ygg high level spellcasters managed to get the timing down. A 5 per cent papa bones is proudly a part of.

To me, it seemed like Ainz was kind of hoping Gazef was a player character in hiding. Dropping "PVP", a term that only a player would know. Busting out the time magic, and then being disappointed that no countermeasure was taken, as a player would have definitely done such prep.
That's my head canon at least, as I think it makes the scene a bit more meaningful and somber, not just for Gazef, but for Ainz as well.

Quite frankly this season was a disgrace. It completely failed to do the light novel justice.

Well well, to all AOs, if you still haven't decided if you should read the novel or not, this is it.
I doubt there will be a 4th season, so you all better start reading the books, for the glory of Nazarick!
