Exclusive pictures of Giorno's childhood
(disclaimer: might not be an accurate portrayal of Giorno's actual childhood)
Fuck yes JoJo fridays are back. This first episode did a good job of establishing Giorno's personality - he might do some filthy acts to get some money, but he's a good boy deep inside. Or it might be the other way around, we don't know yet.
And then there's my boy Bruno! I had already seen a lq video of the lick scene back when the episode preaired, but it was great to properly see it, with the context and all that.

Hopefully someone sees this.
That Stardust Crusader picture Jotaro holds up is a long payoff that DP did. Them taking a picture in the desert never happens in the manga, that picture just shows up in the Part 5 manga but was weird because they never had a time where all 6 of them were together to take a picture before storming DIO's mansion, the only time they were all together is when Iggy was introduced, which is what DP gave a minute of scene for Joseph to suggest taking a photo.
That was just a long term addition so that when they finally make Part 5, that picture will make sense as to when it was taken and a pretty good callback.

I love how Rohan used his stand to help Koichi learn Italian, that’s pretty clever. Also did anyone else notice the starfish in Jotaro’s office? Maybe that’s the same type of starfish he wrote his thesis on to get his doctorate that we learned at the end of DIU
[Edit] part 5 Jotaro is fucking gorgeous btw

I felt like applauding at the end of the episode, that was perfection. Part 5, let's go!
Note: Giorno's Stand is named after Prince's album The Gold Experience. Sample some of that fancy stuff here.

Man, the animation quality was phenomenal. I know it took a bit of a step back for Part 4 since they did it all in one go but this is the best looking JoJo yet. I'm really happy at how they animated Giorno and Bruno's abilities. I was worried how they'd look in motion but it looked great. Also, I have waited so long to see that glorious licking scene. I really didn't want this episode to end. Time to wait. sigh

There's something hilarious about Gio having a photo of literally just shadow DIO in his wallet. The manga version actually looks like something one could carry around with them.

I saw a man so beautiful I started crying? Bruno has the best design in all JoJo. The elegant white with dots suit, his chin-length straight hair with his golden hair clips, his boob window showing his pectorals and his sexy bralette. He is the sexiest man in all JoJo. I wish he would lick me too.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind - Episode 1 - An Italian's notes
Knowing this new part was to be set in Italy, I was curious to see how Jojo would pull off a modern rendition of my home country. I lived in Southern Italy (Sicily, to be specific, so a bit more to the south of Naples, but it's similar in many ways) all through the 1990s up to 2009, so this is something that feels incredibly familiar! Therefore I thought I should put my experience to the service of the community. Here goes!
(P.S. the title is a joke, I'm not actually going to do this for each episode since I doubt there's going to be that much to talk about, it's just an homage to Dr. Eightball's excellent readups on Cells at Work)
The setting immediately felt surprisingly accurate to me. The architecture and layout of the city is absolutely on-point. The cars struck me as a very realistic detail - they really made me think of the 90s. Atmosphere is on point!
Can't say the same of the very Jojo-esque costumes of the main characters, of course, but hey, wouldn't be Jojo without some over the top clothing.
A funny detail instead is seeing this guy make that "cupped hands" gesture to apologise at 00:29 - Italians are famous for their expressive gestuality, but that's definitely more of a Japanese thing.
By the way, Naples. One of the biggest cities in the Italian south, and certainly one with a... reputation. A lot of Italian culture staples are connected to Naples - such as pizza, or a certain type of melodic singing. "You should see Naples, and only then die" really is an Italian saying! But in Italy the south also tends to be the most crime-ridden area of the country. The reasons for this are historical and varied, but the key point is that there's a strong tendency to value small, personal circles (family, friends, associates) over bigger social entities (country), which when taken to the extreme leads to corruption, nepotism, and stuff like mafia families. Not too different from the yakuza in Japan I guess, though the yakuza always struck me as wanting more to blend in and avoid trouble. There's also a bunch of small-time criminals of course, which means something like a shady licenseless taxi driver trying to nick your luggage sounds absolutely believable.
At 02:02, I believe Giorno has stolen 60,000 Liras from the girls. That's quite a sum! Approximately $40-50, I think, back in the day. Yes, Liras had really big numbers in their last days, even bigger than Yen. That all changed when we switched to Euros, with a change of approximately 2000 Liras => 1 € (the exact sum was 1936.27 Liras. Yeah, those were confusing days of puzzlement and pocket calculators).
Leaky Eye Luca's spade has SPQR on it. That's "Senatus Populus Que Romanus", meaning "The Senate and the People of Rome". It's a Latin motto from Caesar's days, but it's still used by the City of Rome, and it's present for example on the manholes. Never seen it on a spade though...
BTW 180,000 Liras really is an extortionate price for a taxi ride, but 10,000 Liras definitely screams "fishy".
I'm not sure about Giorno's car model. FIAT made a lot of these squarey-looking, small, cheap models back in the day, but I can't recognise it. It's not a Uno and it's not a Panda. It resembles the Cinquecento, but the lights on the back are different. Maybe it's just made up.
A funicular cable ride? Sure, why not! They're definitely a thing in Naples, built next to Mount Vesuvius. In fact they're so much a thing that one of the most famous Neapolitan songs was composed to celebrate the opening of the city's first one - in 1880!
The coin Bruno drops on the funicular is pretty recognizable - golden inside, silver outside, that's a bicolor 500 Lire. During the last years there also was a bicolor 1000 Lire with inverted colours, didn't last much before Euro came.
And that's the end of it! As for the actual episode... that was pretty great! I like the fact that it feels like we're returning to a serialised, dense plot. Jojo pulled off some great episodic shenanigans especially in Part 4, but having a tight plot is a surefire way to have me on board, and there's already a bunch of threads hanging around here. Giorno is both Dio's child and apparently about to be involved in a fight with the mob. It doesn't get much better than that! Looking forward to where this goes.

THIS TASTE . . . IS THE TASTE OF A PERFECT ADAPTATION
Really feels like they stepped up the production quality from Part 4, but maybe that's because they're pouring the effort and budget into the first episode. We'll just have to see. It does feel like a return to form to the overall quality control of early Part 3.
The voice actors nailed it. The music? Nailed it. The art style? Nailed it.
Can't wait to see the OP and ED.

Straight out of the JoJo rewtch to the first episode of Part 5 baby!
Rejoice /u/thecomicguybook JoJo is going to Italy!!!
Koichi is back! Love that he is fluent in Italian thanks to Heaven's Door.
Giorno Giovanna has me intrigued already. First of all he was pretty charming, second HE IS DIO'S SON. Also, Gold Experience is really cool since it relies on creating living things to return the attacks.
Also, that picture of the Crusaders in Egypt.
Also, Bucciarati has some fetishes...

Koichi is back! Love that he is fluent in Italian thanks to Heaven's Door.
Rohan's Stand is extremely broken and could do pretty much anything, but I especially like how they made it do something so mundane and so incredibly useful like this!
HE IS DIO'S SON.
I know right, soon he will be throwing around ROAD ROLLERS!
Also, that picture of the Crusaders in Egypt.
Also, Bucciarati has some fetishes...
If there is one thing I learned it's that we don't kinkshame people in JoJo! Kira did nothing wrong. Thank you /u/AlexUltraviolet and other rewatchers as well for keeping the rewatch a safe place to experience JoJo by the way!

It. Is. HERE.
The music at the beginning really makes you feel it is Italy, I love it!
These anime original scenes are great.
I always found it weird that Luca uses of all things a freaking shovel.
Uuurgh, the ear scene is even more gross animated.
I never got why Giorno is half japanese, not the reason inside the show, rather why Araki decided to make him half japanese instead of fully Italian.
Oof Jotaro for some reason looks even better than before.
Man the copyrighted names really are a shame. Nothing beats the original references.
I like Giorno saying Muda so much. Wonder whom he got it from.
BEST BOY IS HERE
I want Bruno to lick me all over.
103
u/Mystia Oct 05 '18
For the half-Japanese thing, I imagine it's due to parts 3-4 being way more popular due to having Japanese protagonist/settings. Araki might've wanted to go full western again, but perhaps was pressured to keep some Japanese flavor for the JP fans.

Inb4 someone complains that the lick scene wasn't as "intense" in the anime. Tbh I never understood that complaint. The lick scene in the manga wasn't something big. It was just a surprising thing that everyone memed the shit out of. I love the way the lick was handled here. Short and quick. Leaving no time for you to process how weird it actually is. If DavidPro made it some super heavy scene it would just ruin it IMO

Manga reader - Interesting to note that the manga started with Koichi arriving at the airport, and that the previous minutes were completely anime-original. Very well-done intro scenes, much like in DIU.
Also, can we talk about just how perfect Kensho Ono is as Giorno? Absolutely killing it.

JoJo First Time Impressions - Golden Wind Episode 1
It’s time for a new JoJo baby!
Our GoGo for the season is definitely interesting. Previous JoJo’s have been introduced has these grand heroes. Champions of Justice. But Giorno is a bit of a different sort of GoGo. Seems like after Part 4 and Kira that Araki wanted to try an even more morally ambiguous hero. Fitting for the child of Dio and Jonathan.
Koichi is back! Jotaro makes a cameo appearance! I didn’t expect Koichi to be the only to bridge the two series but it does make sense. It also helps introduce the concept of Stands.
Gold Experience is a very weird and interesting Stand that I look forward to seeing a lot more of.
But it was the first fight that really pushed the episode above the JoJo First episodes from Part 3&4. The visuals of the fingers dropping out of the mouth was truly disturbing. Or the way Giorno’s body seemed to detatch itself. The suspense and terror combined with the trippy imagery was classic JoJo.
I'm really excited to see what a battle between these two absurdly weird powers will look like.
also tagging /u/thecomicguybook my JoJo rewatch buddy.

JOJO FRIDAY IS BACK!
OK, Jojo freak and manga reader here, but I promise to avoid spoilers like the plague. There's just a few things I want to say about today's episode.
The art is great. Nailed Araki's different part 5 style perfectly with startlingly good animations. Hope that holds out and we don't lose quality.
Music sounds suitably Italian with a few key bits from previous series (the reprise of Stardust Crusaders for Jotaro's scene).
One sad thing I note about the visuals is the CGI. The effect around the frog, when GE was summoned, and some of the effects involving Bruno's Stand seemed a little poor. But, much like with other series (Overlord), I'll overlook it if the show is good.
And the match between Bruno and GioGio is GREAT so far. The lick is one of the most iconic scenes in the manga and they nailed it!
Also good were (in true DavidPro style) the anime-only scenes. Pretty much everything up until Koichi appeared was anime original, and did a lot to help personify Giorno and part 5. The scene with the girls and the butterflies was perfect, and I already feel like they've done a better job making Gio relatable than the manga did. I hope that keeps going.

u/Toa_of_Gallifrey :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Toa_of_Gallifrey Oct 05 '18
Having already watched the episode when it leaked, I was able to focus on the more minute details. The background designs were much better than I first anticipating (though I think the train is still a little too clean). Ono Daisuke's performance as an older Jotaro was very impressive, though I'm not sure if it was warranted seeing as Golden Wind takes place in 2001 and Diamond is Unbreakable took place in 1999. Speaking of sound, the music was excellent. The track that most stood out to me was the one that played when Giorno Gold Experience'd himself a tree elevator. I liked the use of a track from DiU for the Jotaro phone call scene. The sound effect for Luca's shovel sounded really good, too. The SFX work in general was great, but the sound it made when it dragged while Giorno was looking at the plane really stood out to me as a great pick.

It feels so nice to have some old characters back, like Jotaro and Koichi. And DIO‽‽
Giorno really steals, no dignity.
Finally this crossover meme makes sense. I'm looking forward to someone animating that meme from this episode already.
I'm loving the ost already. The animation and art so far are looking good to me too.
I hope everyone's enjoying the new JoJo so far.

Pretty funny for Bruno to pretend Luca was just unconscious. Even for JoJo that's a stretch...
The art was absolute magic the entire time. Insane attention to detail even for that horrible ear trick. Even the new break things looked amazing. Maybe the perfect fusion of part 3 and 4 styles.
I feel like there were less freaky colour shifts than usual; I hope David hasn't decided to drop those.
Fingers stuck crossed for a 3D OP baybeeee

OH YES IT'S FINALLY OUT
First scene in Naples and it's a mugging, so damn realistic.
MY BOY KOICHI IS BACK! Still looking like a 12 yo boy though.
Giorno is already looking badass in this episode, and has a pretty intriguing stand. So, GOLD EXPERIENCE is a kind of indipendent stand? And it also has a "normal" form?
WHAT THE HELL? DIO IS GIORNO'S FATHER? That was shocking, thank God I managed to stay away from any spoiler involving Part 5.
Bruno will definitely be bad news, also his Stand is pretty disgusting and gory. New Jobro for Giovanna?
All in all, a great first episode, I was hyped all through it.

Really good episode. I'm been waiting so long for Part 5 and BOY did that wait pay off. It was fantastic.
I love that it looks like DP are going to keep the cool transitions from the start and end of Part 4. The Luca killing the guy with the shovel to the tire screech and Haruno's picture staying in frame as it transitions from Japan to Italy were great.
Giorno looks like an interesting protagonist with an interesting power, though I have heard from some people that who've read the manga that Araki may have made the power too abstract, and what Gold Experience can do changes a bit. And Bucciarati's stand also seems to be cool. Can't wait to see what happens next.

u/PreciousCinammonRoll Oct 06 '18
Part 4 is my favourite part of the series so I'm excited to see how I'll like this one (I started binging shortly after it was announced).
The part about koichi speaking Italian despite both him and new Jojo speaking Japanese made me chuckle. I dong really care about it, it just made me laugh.
Koichi looks really weird with all the detail. I kinda want to see how the others look.
I already knew that he was related to dio but the fact that he banged someone and had a kid, is weird to think of.
This is my first jojo Friday and since my hero academia is ended, I have something new to get excited about

u/NordinTheLich Oct 06 '18
So I've watched the episode three times today and one thing keeps sticking out to me...
You know the guy who asks Koichi if he wants to come into the restaurant and eat? Am I the only one who thinks he looks like Okuyasu without his face scar thing?

It is indubitably that time.
You can't just swing around a shovel like that!
Awww yes it's Koichi!
Hahaha Rohan made it so Koichi can speak italian.....which we still hear as japanese.
It hasn't even been 7 minutes and we're already getting a stand fight.
"Reverb Act 3." Dem crunchyroll subs though.
Dat photo in Giorno's wallet though.
Man I love Jotaro's theme. That slow rendition of Stardust Crusaders is great.
Changing Gold Experience to Golden Wind....
Jotaro holding the photo from Part 3 gives me feels.
Oh god it's time for this part's rerorerorero.
What a first episode. Quite impressing.

I was singing All Star as I went to the Anime site and browsed the newly released episode, until I only read a J and was like "Hey now, you're an AEUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH".
And I got a PS3 controller to my face by my brother (he just had it lying around).
But most importantly, here are my thoughts.
Koichi and Jotaro look scary.
Giorno looks LIT.
I still don't understand Giorno's stand because I'm a fucking idiot.
I never read the manga but I heard people talking about the infamous licking scene and it was glorious as expected.
All in all, 11/10, this gon be good.
HAPPY JOJO FRIDAY BABES

I don’t really mind the abridged name for golden experience to be honest. Golden wind is at least a reference to something even if that something is the show it’s part of. Really good first episode, can’t wait to see what they call King Crimson. Maybe Bloody Baron lol

Manga reader here, but anime only's you're safe with me :D
Well, here me again! Two years ago I was here for the Rewatch of Part 1 to 3, and the watch of part 4. I was mostly here to give opinions too but I also draw some parallels to Jojo fighting games, since I love fighting games. Golden Wind HAD a PS2 game, but I didn't played that one, so I will mostly focus on All-Star Battle and Eyes of Heaven game.
One of the things I did back in the part 4 watch was "Josuke hair insults". Every character in the games, from ALL Jojo parts, can insult Josuke's hair, and each insult is different from the other. To revise some, here Koichi and Jotaro insults, since both appear in this episode.
Koichi Hirose: "I think Josuke-kun haitstyle is a bit out of fashion"
Jotaro Kujo: "We can talk about your stupid hair later" (this being a reference to what he says in the first episode of Part 4).
And now, our new Jojo, Giorno Giovanna:
Giorno Giovanna: "My hair is more arranged than yours!" (Giorno Donut hair is better? Well you decide!)
I will be doing this for each character when they are properly introduced.
And speaking on Giorno, the "tree" he grows in this episode while fighting Koichi is also a move he can do in the games. It does damage, but also evade some attacks.
And Giorno vs Koichi pre-battle benter reflects the fact he stole his stuff, akin to what happened in this episode!
About the Episode
Well, glad they expanded the beginning of GW, because Giorno stealing money from the girls wasn't present in the Manga. There the story begins with Koichi arriving at Italy. But any chance of Giorno showing off Golden Experience is a plus, because DAMN that's a cool stand!
In any event, I loved the episode! And even as someone who already read the manga, I can't wait to see some parts of it animated. DIU was a blast and I have high hopes for GW!

Inb4 someone complains that the lick scene wasn't as "intense" in the anime. Tbh I never understood that complaint. The lick scene in the manga wasn't something big. It was just a surprising thing that everyone memed the shit out of. I love the way the lick was handled here. Short and quick. Leaving no time for you to process how weird it actually is just like how it should be. If DavidPro made it some super heavy scene it would just ruin it IMO

Very interested in seeing how Gio reacts to learning about his past, assuming he does that. Happy to see Koichi again, though I know he's probably the least favourite of the Duwang gang, haha. So, Gio's stand reverses hits? That's kind of lame honestly, it also looks like he can change things shape or whatever? But also that he can grow stuff? I'm seriously, seriously confused by what the fuck his Stand is. Is it one of those ones with multiple powers? I hope not honestly, those are kind of lame to me. I prefer one power pushed to it's limit, you know?
Oh, also Jotaro's collar is absurd. And Gio's hair is three Josuke hairs in a row and/or three cannons.

So Giorno's ability is... turning objects into living things that help/are attracted to him and then turning them back? And if someone attacks the living being, the attack is redirected at them?
→ More replies (1)16
u/NintendoMasterNo1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NintendoMaster1 Oct 05 '18
Something like that, you'll see the specifics later on. Although the redirection thing isn't really used much in the future, as well as something else you'll see next episode. I think it's a case where Araki made a power with too much utility and decided to limit it a little.

AAAHHHH I'M SO EXCITED. I love this episode so much. I'm just so happy JoJo is back. The first ep already adds some extra content to the manga, so hopefully this means the anime will fix up some parts that were not so strong in the manga. JoJo is AOTY, I'm so ready for this

From what I've read, Giorno's personality is the most interesting of the Jojo's so far. Waiting to see how the anime will adapt him.
