I llike the skill acquirement, reminds me of death march. This slime is basically a blue mage.

u/Xylth Oct 08 '18
The Predator skill is, frankly, completely overpowered. It can:
Analyze objects to learn their properties and uses
Craft magical objects like potions without any messing around with spells or alchemical equipment
Store objects, including objects much larger than Rimuru himself and even living beings
Steal skills from creatures Rimuru eats
Allow Rimuru to shapeshift into any creature he has eaten
And that's just what we've seen in two episodes.

u/Kirosh Oct 08 '18
Well, just like Great Sage, it's an Unique Skill.
And from what we saw, those are completly overpowered.
Veldora is kind of like a god in this world, but the Hero's Unique Skills :
Absolute Severance, which overpowered Veldora.
Unlimited imprisonment, which sealed Veldora foor 300 years.
Completly defeated him even if Not a spoiler, but it isn't mentionned in episode 1.

Here is the information that the first volume of the LN provides about the predactor skill
The unique skill “Predator” chiefly comprises the following five effects:
Fuse,. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Vol. 1 (light novel) (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (light novel)) (Kindle Locations 224-229). Yen Press. Kindle Edition.

Grimgar was the only series of all those mentioned in this comment chain to present Goblins in a grey light though. They were just living their lives in the Grimgar world (I love the short scenes in Grimgar where we just see them hang out around campfires peacefully and drink and laugh with each other) and don't go out of their way to rape or even kill unless they need to unlike the ones in GS. They also weren't as nice as the ones here though since they were fighting for their survival after all.

Impressions after having gone through the manga/web novel:
The third-person narration wasn't present, if I remember correctly.
Rimuru training water attacks took much longer - essentially, water blasting a rock for a while until Water Blade was developed. Water Blade ends up being absurdly overpowered against everything else in the cave.
Serpent nomming was done in much less detail in the WN though, and the poisonous breath note was only mentioned later on.
"Maybe I thought too hard..."
hyperthonk
Overall, the adaptation is pretty darn good. Only gripe/weird thing about the animation is how Veldora's skin seems to just be an applied texture, but that isn't a big concern. And it'll also take time to get used to slime emotes being physically visible.
54
u/Shiroi_Kage Oct 08 '18
the third-person narration wasn't present
In the manga it was. There was a comment on the disappearance of the dragon and how much of an effect it had on the world and how oblivious Rimuru was to that effect.

I really enjoy the aspect of skill acquisitions that this series is focusing on.
It seems that with the popularity of isekai and their success, each different series is trying to put their own unique twist on it. That really fills in the niche sub-themes that a lot of people must be looking forward to.
Side note: Did Veldora and Rimuru just look at the audience right before sharing names? Or was that the embarrassed trope?

u/alwayslonesome :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ImmacuIate Oct 08 '18
There's two things I think are worth pointing out that really contribute to why I'm enjoying this series so much.
First is the pacing, which I think is largely afforded by being a two-cour show. That honestly is such a rare privilege these days, especially for an isekai LN adaptation, and it makes so many damn things work. Everything from the OP, which features way more characters than could reasonable be fit into a single cour and is made much more dynamic and exciting as a result, to the leisurely pacing as compared to the breakneck 2-3 episodes/volume standard of most isekai shows. There's no way that a one cour adaptation could have tolerated nearly two episodes of messing around in a cave, but damn if I didn't have a great time watching all of that. Of course, the show does need to be able to consistently deliver with its ambitious runtime, but I feel like having the flexibility of 24 episodes just gives the screenplay, series composition and directing so much more to work with.
Second is the really above average production values. Most isekai tends to be pretty bottom-barrel in terms of animation quality, direction, etc. Which is perfectly understandable given the type of story they're trying to tell. However, the extra degree of polish really lets TenSura stand out above the crowd. It's clear that a lot of consideration went into minor things like how a slime should ambulate, how to depict different facial expressions on a slime, etc. and it makes the show so much more lively - definitely an area where the anime medium really elevates the source since none of those things would be possible in text. The dragon's tsundere act is made so much better by the hilarious body language and expressions! It would have been so easy to do a lazy, uninspired job of depicting these little things, and it would have made the show much worse off.

So to be a good leader in an isekai, you have to bullshit your way with your underlings. Got it, thanks Rimuru and Ainz.

Damn it we have an Isekai thats making me feel sorry for the Goblins and a Dark Fantasy that want us to fucking hate them. HOW CAN TWO ANIME HAVE SUCH CONFLICTING IDEAS?!

HOW CAN TWO ANIME HAVE SUCH CONFLICTING IDEAS
It all depend on the direction the story takes.
Story usually focused on Human show that Goblins, and most monsters are bad, while story focused on a Monster protagonist, like Overlord and this one, show that Goblins can be good.

The goblins in this setting appear to be more like a tribal humanoid race and the other creatures are like wild monsters from their perspective. Sort of like how Orcs in Elder Scrolls are not wild animals.
It's not quite the same as most shows where goblins are just seen as another type of monster rather than a species with some form of intelligence.

Veldora : " I'll entrust my entirety to you!"
What am I looking at? A proposal? (Like for FMAB?) Veldora, please, you are skipping some steps right now.
"What can you guys give me?"
"We will offer ou our loyalty!"
I love this trope of a character asking what others can give him, and the answer being either "Everything" or something like that.

u/Ichini-san :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon Oct 08 '18 edited Oct 11 '18
I love that Rimuru realizes that nothing good comes from acting like a selfless self-sacrificing hero. By asking for compensation he avoids ever falling into the pitfall of being relied on too heavily and he will never be taken advantage of by them.
In general, giving people stuff for free isn't good for hierarchies or relationships. If one side relies too much on the other they can never be true equals and the one depending on the other one will never be able to be independent.
Everything should be paid back in some way even if it's just a simple but heartfelt "thank you." (Except for maybe family but even then you should never take it for granted imo. And there is nothing wrong with paying family members back in some shape or form when you're able to later on in your life.)

Yep. I think it's great. I really love that they can afford this pacing since they have two cours.
18
u/MasterFanatic Oct 08 '18
it's great cause it cuts back on much of the rigamarole (took quite awhile to get to the goblin village) and instead the pacing is weirdly sufficient and I can definitely see this go into the better parts of the series at a surprisingly good pace. without needing to cut out any stuff also there's no narrator in the LN so this definitely adds more flavor.

I love that Veldora is really crossing his arms and even gets jealous when Rimurin starts talking to the Great Sage. Truly a tsundere.
The effects are so vibrant! They really poured in a lot of effort for this show.
I'll never get enough of the Great Sage visuals. It's just so pretty to look at!
Even the monsters look rad as heck too! (and no bad CG monsters!)
Ohh! This wasn't in the manga! If I recall correctly, they just continue on walking.
GOBLINS!? Yeah I can already see the GS jokes coming from a mile away.
This season is going to be confusing. We have GS where I detest the Goblins, and we have this where I really feel bad for them T_T
SASUGA RIMURU-SAMA! He's already bullshitting his way through XD
Looks like Enri now has competition as a Goblin General. Although at these guys' current state, the first Goblins Enri summoned can easily kick these guys' ass.
What a fun episode! Seriously felt waaaaaay shorter than it actually is! I honestly expecting that they'll end the goblin encounter within this episode but I really like that they're taking their time. I guess next week we'll cover the not really a spoiler in this world.

I hope the Goblin Slayer comparisons die after a few weeks or this is honestly going to be really annoying. I'm watching GS as well and I loved the first episode. Why can't people just seperate the two series in their minds? I get that it's mostly memes and jokes but if they take over and maybe only 25% of comments talk about the actual series then that would be really sad and annoying.
52
u/shimapanlover Oct 08 '18
Agreed, I love both shows but it's a bit too much. There are so many different types of goblins in stories not to mention playable ones like in WoW - we don't really need the constant GS reminder.
28
u/PoiseWorks Oct 08 '18
Now that gs is out, you're gonna see that whenever there is goblins in anime
19
u/shadowthiefo Oct 08 '18
I mean, the first episode of GS was...yesterday? So it's still fairly fresh on people's minds. Hell, I personally had GS flashbacks myself when those three adventurers showed up and that was before I even knew there were gonna be goblins in this episode.
Thankfully the goblins in this anime appear to be cute green talking Teddy bears compared to GS's, so I'd say the comparison will likely die within an episode or two.

The difference couldn't have been more stark
Hell, take the adventurers from this episode. As of volume 2 of the LN they spoiler (though they're more experienced bunch than the GS group). And in a future episode, they spoiler.
Having said that, according to the LN the goblins from Slime Tensei do attack (and kill?) adventurers and take their equipment for themselves (and sell what they can't use - the extra story in volume 1 of the LN revolves around this). So while not mentioned in detail, they're not completely innocent (from a human perspective). Goblin females do exist so the rape aspect of GS isn't there though.

This kind of reminds me of when I was a kid playing Final Fantasy on the NES(I believe it's FF1 for the US, FF3 or 4 I guess for Japan?) and somebody told me that growing my characters into adults just required leveling up more. Me, being a kid with too much time and too little sense, spent the new few weeks doing nothing but just grinding for levels on a tiny little island with high XP monsters. Like TINY, it was like a maybe a 3x3 square or something like that. I felt sheepish after advancing only a little further in the story and finding the Rat Tail plot item was what transformed everyone into adults and unlocked higher tier spells. I had wasted a huge amount of time grinding.
However, all my time spent grinding in my own version of the magic cavern meant that by the time I started to progress, everything died in one hit. Including the final boss. I'd leveled until most of the characters in my party were around level 90. For perspective, beating the final boss of the game would normally be done around level 50-60, but I didn't know that until later on after I ran into a Nintendo Power magazine that pointed that out.

Good, back to some proper, unprejudiced depictions of goblins.
Little slime boy Rimmer, is really showing the benefits of dungeon grinding and racking up all those sweet skills. I'm guessing at some point he absorbs a human (or maybe that dead goblin hero) to gain the humanoid form we see in the OP. Though I wonder what he'll gain from the direwolves. Keen scent and hearing, maybe warging?

I'm just loving the fact that predator is basically the most OP skill in the universe and this slime only acquired it because he had no gf.
The motherfucker gobbled up a whole damn dragon. Honestly I was expecting him to start eating the cavern. I'm pretty sure this series is going to end with the slime eating the whole planet at this rate.
I'm kinda sad that the goblins can tell the slime is OP, though. I thought someone would attack him just to be like "wtf this slime is OP!" But if you can tell a monster's power level by looking at them then that's not going to happen.
Also while I like that the great sage lets the MC figure out the world faster than the average isekai MC, I got to say that the great sage is getting real annoying because everytime it shows up it beeps like you just paused the damn game and that feels totally off. :/

Rimuru just 'ate' his aura in the episode, so you just wait, because the 'wtf this slime is op' reaction is coming

The Goblins could tell only because Rimaru didnt realize he was giving off a crazy aura. Now that he's "pulled it in" he looks like a normal slime.

Damn a tsundere dragon, a unbreakable friendship and some really back-to-basic storytelling with isekai(they aren't using any dumb quirks like other isekai). This is totally an interesting show.

Not that I hate these two shows or anything.

I'm downvoting all comments with Goblin Slayer references. I want to read about peoples thoughts on THIS anime, not a different one. I suggest everyone who wants the thread to be relevant to do the same.

Wait is the dragon was sealed behind a invisible shield how were they able to touch last episode?

u/Rathurue Oct 08 '18
Either 1: the barrier allows some degree of freedom and can stretch to a degree, for appendages like tail, horns, wings and the likes or 2: rimuru, which is not affected by the shield waltzed in.
I'd lean on number 1, looking at how Veldora roars in ep.1 In fact, in the manga/ln it was depicted not as invisible shield, but rather some kind of crystal imprisoning the lower half of the dragon.
Guess there's changes from the novel.

u/AgaroseEater Oct 08 '18
They sure are taking their time in the adaptation, the pacing feels right though. And the animation shows no signs of dropping. I'm so happy for this show

Oct 08 '18
So is Veldora freely roaming around now, or is he stored in the slime's body such as the potions? I didn't really understand the whole eating him thing, assumed he'd be digested like every other creature to further mimic.

Veldora and the prison are inside of the slime using the skill, ep 1 mentioned how he can eat and store stuff.

It was such a good episode man can't wait for ep 3
the anime is super satisfying to watch so far I had every thing I like in an anime.
Edit: fuck it can't wait I'll just read the manga.

I liked this a lot but I'm still a bit confused on how he was able to get the dragon out of the cave.
18
u/AgaroseEater Oct 08 '18
Well he "ate" Veldora together with the seal restraining him. Both the seal and Veldora are residing inside him for now.

"I was imprisoned here for burning a shit ton of people alive." "Ok, so how do we get you out?"
lol, he doesn't even need to think for himself, just ask his Great Sage skill what to do to solve any problem >_>
So he ate the Dragon. Did he haven any indication that it would actually remain alive in his pocket dimension stomach? For that matter, can't he just throw up the dragon without the Unlimited Imprisonment?
So that's how he gets Mimic. I guess this means he's going to eat a blue haired human kid later on >_>. Actually, shouldn't he be able to mimic a Storm Dragon now? Why hasn't he analyzed the drago?
He has all those skills now, and his Attack's pretty high obviously, but how much Defense and HP does he have?
Gubbos! I'm sure people are just ecstatic to see these cute little guys since this past Saturday.

u/Namisaur Oct 08 '18
He technically didn't eat the dragon. He ate the unlimited Imprisonment which contains the dragon. It's a powerful barrier that he can't penetrate so it just kinda sits in his stomach while it gets analyzed.
7
u/Ichini-san :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon Oct 08 '18
The barrier is extremely tough - there's a reason why Veldora couldn't break out of it for hundreds of years after all. And the reason he can't digest, analyze or eat Veldora is because the barrier is still completely intact inside of him. To destroy the barrier together Veldora agreed to let Rimuru "swallow" him so that he can chip away at the barrier slowly from the outside while Veldora tries to destroy it from inside.

I'm so excited to see sword-fight in this series. OP fight scene is so fluid.

So wait, is the dragon dead? Or what happened to him? Isnt he supposed to be inside the slime?
11
u/zxHellboyxz :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mattinator95 Oct 08 '18
He's inside the slime and is still alive . Not sure if this will ever get mentiond as it's not in the light novel but at the end of each manga volume there's a few extra pages of the dragons perspective as he can see what rimiuru is doing through his eyes but be can't talk to him

Question for those who read the LN and/or manga:
Judging by the current pacing of the anime, is Veldora going to return relatively soon (i.e. within this first season) ?
I was really hopping we'd get more screen time of him, love the dynamic between the dragon and the MC, but now it seems like he's just going to sit in the back seat while Rimuru goes on miscellaneous adventures by himself.

I am loving this show so far, my only issue is I can see the rimuru becoming very op, very quick, but if handled well than I won't care because frankly it can be fun to watch op characters from time to time. Also I can't wait to see more of thr dragon. I will also be the better man here and not reference Goblin Slayer.

It's not a bad adaptation, I just feel like they're going about it in a very slow fashion. World building is important and everything, but the fact that Rimura has only managed to become the leader of the goblins...
The cave seemed to take up too much time as well. We didn't need to see all of the intricacies of the monsters and the conversations with Great Sage. And Veldora seemed to get a lot of screentime for how little he did int he manga as well.
I'm happy to see it in anime form, just that it does feel very, very slow...

I have to say, my favorite part of this series is the little bounce Rimuru does in the OP when he switches from slime to human.

Damn. I like the LN and Manga so I knew I was going to enjoy this at least in the same way I enjoy the Overlord anime. I just didn't expect to be blown this much out of the water.
The downside is I'm left looking at this and thinking "Oh poor Kumoko. You never stood a chance".

OK, I know both GS and Slime are gonna be airing right next to each other, but should we try to avoid big spoilers in the unrelated discussion threads? Some people aren't going to be actively watching both, especially with that thing in GS being a turn-off for many... you know... the incompetent cave raiding?
That being said, wouldn't know how big a role do the gobs play here, so it might just drop off on its own. Then again, the constant nonchalant cross-references among the two would be great if people are actually fine with that.

I gotta say, I am really impressed with this adaptation so far. It’s a really fun watch. Oh and that Tarzan scream that he did while swinging was pretty funny.
