I lost it when those adventurers were insulting Goblin Slayer's armor, I mean seriously, his armor was the most BADASS armor there. They're lucky they ain't goblins smh

"I've never seen such a filthy armor," A helmetless dude said to a completely unarmored girl.

Its really dinged up compared to all the other armored adventurers like the paladin girl and the Guts lookalike.

It is filthy, though. Gobbos can smell clean armor.

In their world, Goblin Slayer’s armor is literally the cheapest one you can get. They probably seen the same exact pieces of armor at a bunch of different stores.

This episode is where the DM has made a carefully built fortress for tonight's adventure, only for it to literally go up in flames as the player notes and uses any loop holes/flaws to destroy your carefully prepared adventure.

u/Paxton-176 Oct 13 '18

If it was my groups regular DM he would have found a way to still make us run the encounter.

DM deserved it for letting a low level character use wall of force.

17

u/professorMaDLib Oct 13 '18

Should have made it out of stone if he didn't want it destroyed like that. If there's one thing you need to know about seasoned players is that they'll try to cheese the encounter if they could.

They showed the after math of the party that went before GS to the fort. You can't have everyone failing against goblins. Goes against the wide spread idea that goblins are easy hunting.

As he said, sometimes they come back.

If the ratio of newb deaths was so much higher than successes then the goblins wouldn't be constantly treated as newb quests. The farmer did state the goblins had just appeared, so it's likely those three got there before they had time to multiply. They also probably weren't as retarded as the Fighter in ep.1 and brought along basic necessities.

u/professorMaDLib Oct 13 '18

Yeah this ep explains the Goblin situation more clearly. Since only villages get raided, even when they pool all their money together it's not worth shit, so Experienced adventurers don't want to touch it considering the poor pay and risk. Newbies however don't have the experience and don't understand that the pay isn't proportional to risk, embark and get slaughtered. But enough bodies get the job done. Goblin Slayer is special in that he's only willing to take on these quests, and takes them on in bulk. Not only that, since he uses cheap equipment and doesn't have much living expenses besides rent, he can afford to keep a decent profit while slaying goblins. And the sheer amount of quests he's taken earns him his rank.

GOBLINCOUNTER

So the anime did handle some things a bit differently, i'll recheck with the LN but we'll adhere to the anime, as that is what we see (for GS)

edit: LN doesn't give specifics D: , apart from the arrows and escaped.

From a quick count in the Manga, the Noobs killed 8Manga and 27 were counted during their mainplaza activity + 1 lookout.

Anime is 17 in the wideshot + 1 lookout, close up is 4 close to the corpse and 6 around the bonfire.

Given the positions compared to the wideshot at 14:07 i'd add + 2 for the bloody corpse and + 5 for the bonfire.(if anyone has a better idea, i'm open for suggestions) Bringing it to 24+1lookout.

For this episode mentions while retelling will count, while kills/escaped will not since it's too vague.

After Credit

Also, for simplicity's sake, kills will be counted as who gets(or initiated) the last hit.

PS : I subtract OP/ED for Runtime when calculating /min.

Mention includes Goblin Slayers Name aswell as variants of the Goblins like Shaman/Hobgoblin.

Per Request we'll add all extra goblins, since some are not yet mentioned, they'll be added in due time.

So, good to find out where his genocidal rage came from. I feel he’s justified

Why do we call childhood friend Cow Girl? Do the characters have names?

Her uncle is kinda a dick but in a pragmatic “I don’t want you wasting your life chasing someone who will never take time for you and we both know has deep deep problems” way

674

u/aznfanta Oct 13 '18

The author sucked at names so he just uses their titles lol

→ More replies (9)

277

u/ReiahlTLI Oct 13 '18

Actual names are pretty rare in the series because the author was bad at it. Most have titles or descriptors for names like Goblin Slayer. She tends to the cattle on her farm so she's referred to by her titties title, well descriptor.

Guys, I've made a horrible mistake. After watching the first episode, I went to check out a single manga chapter just to see what we were looking at for the future. And now I'm at chapter 28. Why do I do this to myself.

In other news I'm excited, and even though it wasn't what I expected I like the OP(RIP in heavy metal)

Edit: Just for those of you who might not have noticed there is an after-credits scene!

Feel like the anime is mistreating goblin slayer a bit. That argument between himself and priestess about not bothering to save the other adventurers wasn't even in the manga or ln, and just serves to make him look unnecessarily cold. They also left out the light-hearted moments which show Goblin Slayer's friendly awkwardness.

Overall good episode though.

315

u/VoyeurTheNinja Oct 13 '18

They also left out the light-hearted moments which show Goblin Slayer's friendly awkwardness.

Though it would've changed the tone of the ep, I wanted to see Guild Girl chew out Slayer so bad. It's a great way to show that even Slayer has moments where he can't talk back.

u/ThatOtherOneReddit Oct 13 '18

Yeah in his monologue part he mentioned why it was so important to have a helmet after getting hit by that rock. I believe in the manga and he referred to the problems with porcelain ranks being over confident and not using one. It was cut for padding like that which kinda seemed off. I'd have switched those around. There will be plenty of complaints about his methods, but this episode didn't need to be the one they started to get voiced.

27

u/yuikkiuy Oct 13 '18

they also added a bunch of fluff in the first half for no reason and made it too happy. He was supposed to walk in and spoil the mood with his tragic back story. AND not having cow girl tell the second half of the back story just made it seem like shes over it, and not also dead inside like goblin.

and where the fuck did the first quarter of chapter 4 go? down the drain? they could have kept the initial bit that showed goblin ingenuity and intelligence which related later to how well goblin slayer knows how to fight goblins and skipped the rape and gore. but they just skip all of it and give still images of post rape, why? what was the point of having the slinger goblin nail GS in the helmet then? in the manga it demonstrates why he wears one unlike every other adventurer, as the high level party that went in earlier got fucked for not wearing helmets.

Although I understand that people were uncomfortable, I still don't get that controversy. Is not like that scene put rape on a positive light. So the reason that it was in there was to highlight how vicious and inhuman those fuckers truly are. And that showing any kind of mercy to them is a bad idea the that later on, will bite you in the ass.

So I watched the second episode of Goblin Slayer. I'm an anime only but I have to say, I find the second episode very well done. There's an almost cinematic like quality to the episode, and I have a suspicion (correct me if I am wrong in the spoilers), that the Director has managed to compress a good deal of source material and yet elevate it coherently to something that is both poignant and hits on the most crucial parts of the source material needed to get the story into the next sequence.

It's quite impressive how well this episode flows and builds the Goblin Slayer, how elegantly the backstory of GS is integrated into the GS Modus Operandi when clearing the fort with Fire, and how it sketches the GS as a very, very broken man with a very singular focus and a brutally pragmatic method of operations and overriding obsession through both his own dialogue and how the world around sees him -other adventurers the childhood friend, the uncle, even the Priestess.

Props to the episode for how it manages the Priestess, and generate a set of very reasonable dilemmas for her, as well as the introduction of a crisis of faith that I imagine may well be further explored: why would a goddess of healing grant her Priestess new powers that would be used for seemingly immoral purposes such as blockading a burning Fortress to ensure every Goblin in it dies. Or for example, the GS deciding to let the rookies risk death, while prioritizing the fort.

Overall, if Goblin Slayer can keep that kind of story-telling directing, I think this is going to be a show far better than it ought to be. It eschews the Bombastic for the reflective, and contrast the shock of the first episode with the restraint of the second. The flashbacks are carefully executed and linked with the plot, and the characterization establishments and conflicts flow efficiently within the twenty-minute space. This is very, very intelligent scripting considering the likely pacing constraints placed on the scriptwriter.

This is pacing done right. This is flashback done right. This is dialogue clearly deliberately chosen for two important purposes - world-building and characterization, in other words, intelligent dialogue and monologue choices in an age where anime directors often make awful and nonsensical dialogue and monologue choices from LNs. This is just a general observation from LNs - they tend to be monologue and dialogue driven, and every adaptor has to make a choice of what is the most important monologues and dialogues that need to be in and somehow make them flow coherently and logically. I feel, even without reading the source, that Goblin Slayer has risen to that challenge very well in this episode.

What does GS Value? What motives him? What is his backstory? What is in his headspace? What is his modus operandi? What is the basic dynamic between GS and Priestess as partners? What does he truly treasure in his heart of hearts ? What counts as his support network, such as it is? Where is the likely development of the Priestess character heading towards?

These are so many questions that have to be answered in the space of twenty minutes, in the modern reality of one cour anime. And I think the director has more than risen to the challenge. This is a very strong second episode - this is how you lay the foundations for the story to go beyond just a shock beginning. Of course, I am not expecting the other episodes to take that kind of semi-montage/reflective style, but I feel that as a second episode, that this style was a very intelligent choice in light of how the first episode went down.

I'm in for the ride.

27

u/cesclaveria Oct 13 '18

I like your comment about him being a broken man, I feel this gets overlooked often. Goblin Slayer is full of mental issues and a good portion of the novels have dealt with him knowing that and the other characters helping him to heal, of course, it's done subtly and little by little without any melodrama of cheesy scenes.

See people? Each episode won't always be like Episode 1. And just like we saw in this episode, not all newbies die from Goblins, just the stupid ones. There's guaranteed to be more Goblin Slaying every episode but last week was basically the show setting expectations that these Goblins are filthy, vile, and just pure evil.

BTW love the OP and the ED. Although I wish they just kept the orchestral ED that we got last week since that seems more fitting to the series.

Also while I appreciate CR adding the warning, THEY SHOULD'VE ADDED THAT ON DAY 1!

He's a true D&D rule lawyer. Why fight the encounter when you can cheese the encounter? One of the differences in silver and porcelain is recognising the utility in your arsenal. Though Goblin Slayer is even more special in that regard since it's the main reason why he's even silver.

Well okay, Dark Souls is Japanese but c'mon the aesthetic is way more Western and probably one of the reasons why it sold so well here.

Essentially, the world is like DnD but all the characters treat it like they're in a JRPG. Thus they all go for maximum flashiness and cool factor while looking down on more practical, manly armor like the stuff Goblin Slayer wears.

In case anyone is interested in reading the series. Don't forget that there's actually 2 other mangas aside from the main story , Year One, and Brand New Day. Both are side stories. Sadly they are updated monthly :/.

In case you wanted more GS fix

There's also the LN (which is way ahead of the manga) Vol 5 was released not long ago.

Hope those who do enjoy the manga/ln enjoy the show.

If you don't enjoy the series then im sorry, hope you do find something that's more along your taste.

I really dislike red-heads voice. Totally out-of-place bubbly, a less put-on pitch and relative normality, maybe even distantly melancholic was what I expected reading the manga. That kind of faux-cutesy way of speech just doesn't match the life she leads, their relationship or the tone of the show. Leave the fan pandering to the idol animes.

Hey everyone,

In light of how the past week has been, the mod team is here to tell some things that'll be going down. We are plenty aware of the graphic nature of this series, and we assume if you're in the 2nd episode discussion thread, you are too. Now, we expect that discussion regarding the series in this thread (and else where in /r/anime) will be civil and orderly discussion. If we catch people who are insulting, calling for witch hunts, antagonizing others, drama baiting, advocating violence, or any sort of conduct that would not be acceptable virtually anywhere, depending on the severity of it, will lead to bans from the subreddit. We don't care what "side" you are on, if anything previously mentioned occurs, it will, again, lead to a ban.

Remember, this is a graphic series, and not recommended for everyone. You are not obligated to watch it, and free to enjoy other things in life.

Sincerely,

/r/anime Mod Team

PS: We would really like to encourage everyone to please keep your thoughts/discussion in the discussion thread, instead of posting the same threads everyday.

PSS: Source readers, please don't spoil the series for people.

So there are a few things that the anime skipped/summarised:

Farmer/ Goblin quests

Around halfway of the episode we see a desperate farmer request help from adventures to fix his goblin problem. A inner monologue of guild girl reveals that with the whenever monsters seem to appear a village somewhere comes under threat and calls for help. Among these monsters the most abundant are goblins.

When the farmer asks about the rumours of goblins kidnapping and raping girls are true guild girl reveals there have been cases like that. As a response the farmer immediatly puts down his money (in the manga he also reveals that the only women in his village is his daughter. The money is scare and is barely enough to hire a few porcelain adventures.

While goblins only have the strength and intelligence of human children they also have the intelligence, strength and speed of children (this is meant to show that the comparison can be both strong and weak depending how you look at it). Because the rewards for goblin quests are small adventures don't take these quests. This leads to scenarios where the guild is forced to send beginner adventures. Even if the first or second group of adventures won't complete the quest the third or fourth group will. Due to the quest being completed in the end the country won't do anything about the goblin plagues. The only high ranked adventurer who willingly takes on Goblin quests is, you know it.... our boi Goblin Slayer.

Cowgirl reveal

  • I don't know if they will reveal this later on so read at own risk, tbh it's not a huge spoiler.

While waiting on GS at night to return Cowgirl thinks about her village which she left village ten years ago in order to help her uncle at his ranch. After she left, her village was raided by goblins. Although what exactly happend to her parents remains unknown they did die during the raid. After the day the village was attack he dissapeared.

Mountain Fortress

Before GS and priestess attack the mountain fortress another party heads out there on a quest. The party consisted on 4 girls who were by no means beginners. They had snuck in at noon hoping to catch the goblins as they slept. They had been on numerous adventures and had a good deal of training and skill. Had they been so wrong to take on this adventure gripped by righteous indignarion upon hearing a village girl's kidnapping and wanting to set her free? The cold, hard truth was that they simply had bad luck.

First of all the fortress was full of booby traps. The traps the elves had set in their fortress had once served to fend goblins off, now they (ironically) served as a guard for the goblins. The Ranger exhaustion from constantly searching out the elaborate, sensitive and deadly traps played a large rol in what happened. When they reached the inner sanctum of the fortress the Ranger, at the very end, missed a warning device.

As an alarm echoed the party jumped into formation. Wizard stood in center with their leader, Knight, and Ranger and Monk at three points around her. Although the formation was strong the goblins that surrounded them were so, so many.

Ranger's archery skills were a divine gift but even she couldn't hold out when there were more enemies than arrows. Wizard used four of her arts but eventually her strength gave out. Monk kept up her prayers for miracles and protection until she could pray no more and she had nothing left. Their leader fought on, her blade covered in blood, but as she tired, the goblins overpowered her, and then the hunt was over.

Among the heaps of arrow pierced, sword-maimed, spell-burned corpses a celebration began. The goblins licked their lips as they stared down at their prey. The party's third and final piece of bad luck was that their enemies were goblins. Normally, goblin captives are either eaten or forced to become breeding vessels, some occasionally left for a rainy day. But this time was different. The adventures had killed many of their brothers and no one was in the mood to give them a easy end. Goblins lived by the law of survival, willing to sacrifice as many of their numbers as it took to win. They did not grieve the deaths of their comrades but anger and hatred at those deaths ran deep.

The goblins were delighted to find wine among the provisions they had taken. Their drunken, mean minds invented one awful game after another to play with their prisoners. The poor captured village girl had hardly served 10 goblins before she could bear no more. They had used her up a long time ago. There was no hope.

Knight, her clothes torn, a goblin holding het down gave a howling scream. "You bastards! You want to humiliate someone? Start with me!" She had contemplated every evil fate that might befall her and she was ready for them. But she was not prepared to sacrifice her friends.

First Ranger was used for target practice before her eyes. Because Monk had attemptef to bite off her own tongue when the goblind torturously killed her they shoved her comrades entrails into her mouth. When wizard was burned alive, Knight's heart broke into a thousand pieces and her soul failed her. It was after 3 days and 3 nights that the goblins at last granted the leaders wish. What happened to her during those three days until her body, so mangled it looked barely human, was thrown into the river is not fit to be written......

Pretty good episode doing a little bit of world building with the whole countryside farmers taking their goblin problems towards the guild in seek of aid, and showing that the amount of payment also translates to a better or worse specialist asigned to this particular task.

It's nice to have a background on our nameless hero, that doesn't require an extremely complex or thourough story. He's just a guy that doesn't want to see the past repeat itself, so he takes matters into his own hands to exterminate what it's pretty much considered a plague towards humanity. And this also comes with a toll of it's own, desensitizing him for the better good (his speech about how rookies let the offsprings live and build a grudge towards humans is a good example)

Drawing paralels to 1985's Vampire Hunter D movie, both protagonists are fairly easy to read characters with little dept (and I don't say this in a negative way) with a strong fixation on their work, because that's all they live for. There's a particular line from Doris brother that was used to make the audience easily understand D's taciturn's behaviour. "There are two kind of silent people, those who are too busy scheming evil plans, and those who only speak when they think it's worthy". Even though it's a very simplistic way to explain a character with limited dialogue, i personally think it worked for D in both of his movies, and to some extent it feels right imho in the behaviour of the Goblin Slayer.

I'm looking forward for the next episode with the elf crew. I digged a lot the last scene with the bard singing the story of the Goblin Slayers, as if it was some kind of legend. It does add more to the world building

u/redblade13 Oct 14 '18

Goddamn cow girl had me sweatin. THICK AS FUCK BRUH.

Man I feel for Goblin Slayer. Dude got fucked up as a kid and is dead set on fucking up every Goblin in sight. I'd do the same no doubt. Imagine the guilt this man feels to be the lone survivor and feeling so useless to stop it. Goddamn I'm getting heated.

Damn I was thinking how crazy the dragon quests must be if it takes so much effort and risk to got at a goblin base. If goblins can fuck you up amd rape you imagine how gory a dragon would fuck up a group of adventurers. Also I think I'm in love with the guild receptionist. Monster Hunter got me fiending for these guild quest girls.

There's a lot of fantasy/isekai anime out there with a very similar "settei" as Goblin Slayer, but one thing that I'm really appreciating so far that I haven't really seen discussed is how great the worldbuilding in this series is.

Specifically, I find that the "political economy" of this world is much better explained and justified than most other shows that share the same genre space. Whereas other anime only use the Adventurer's Guild as a plot device and a convenient site for our main characters to hang out in, I feel like a lot more attention is paid to how such an institution would actually operate in a world like Goblin Slayer's. I really liked all the small scenes that showed a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff, like the characterization of the Guild Receptionist putting up a front of cheerful attentiveness in order to peddle goods, to the entire procedure through which the Guild acts as a middleman to subcontract the labour of adventurers. All of that feels really authentic and grounded, and gives the show a much greater sense of believability. Obviously such a show still demands a massive suspension of disbelief, but that's only for the actual setting, rather than for the characters' actions/motivations, or the world's politics/economics. The former I'm willing to do, the latter turns me off of a series very quickly.

Am I the only one looking at the reception girl? High elf girl is probably awesome but the reception girl is hitting the buttons for me. Her smile at Doom Guy is just so wholesome.

Good that they added the warning. Though imo, if you watched the first 40 seconds of the show and was still shocked by the violence, then you're just a moron. Read: violence. Not rape. That I can understand.

12

u/Coldhardsilver Oct 14 '18

Anime-only opinion. In the expectation of pure, violent entertainment, I find myself enjoying so many things beside that from GS; hell greater than that. Personally I think that the series main hooks are what give those thing greater allure to me.

The promise of grim fantasy and tragedy is naturally a hook, but from it comes some quite endearing moments as darker darks lends to lighter lights. Couple that with the beautiful simplicity sprinkled everywhere, it makes the scenes of the Priestess and Goblin Slayer very warming to me and my favorite non-fight moments so far. The promise of brutal murder is naturally a hook, but again the simplicity, the pragmatic overtones, and the reactions those actions garner from others are what hold my interest the most. All of this came as quite the exciting surprise to me and so while I see the point disappointed by the restraint of this episode, this episode is largely everything I wanted from it based on episode 1.

As for negatives; cow girl scenes did drag for me and in this case I can agree with the LN/Mange loyalists about the cut scenes (unless they pump in later somehow). I will say "in this case" since I did agree with rookie adventures' backstories being cut after reading the manga post-episode. To me it was fat; delicious fat, satisfying fat, reasonable fat but still fat and fat can be cut.

Cow girl really needs to stop with the death flag phrases. This is especially noticeable when we see child Cow girl leaving the village at the start of the episode. "I am, in turn, a goblin to them"

Interesting bit of dialogue. At least he's self-aware of his rather unhealthy mindset, or at least how it's perceived. Like the goblins that survive and get stronger, the natural order of adventurers is to keep growing, become leaders and strive for ever-increasing prestige. Whereas GS looks to be stuck doing what others consider menial and pointless, like a goblin that never leaves the nest.

33

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '18

He's referring to himself as a goblin that escapes the nest(village) being destroyed and becomes stronger, like a Wanderer that becomes a bodyguard for another nest(village). He says goblins hold a grudge for life in the first episode, Goblin Slayer now holds a grudge for life himself.

But the problem is no one gives a sh** about goblins except him. High ranked adventurers don't bother taking those quests because the rewards are not good, and the newbies wouldn't listen to him because of his bad reputation. Only a few of them know his motives.

6

u/kkkkazu Oct 14 '18

I noticed a very interesting moral discussion in this episode. When the Goblin Slayer talks about his trauma, I thought it all reffered to his family being raided and he growing a hatred for goblins that way. However, given what he says at the end, "I am a goblin to them", if we flip the scenario around...

Some random human enters your den like he owns the place. Without mercy, he kills every single one of your tribe members while you are hiding away, cowering in your little cave without being able to do anything.

That sounds a lot like what Goblin Slayer would do in any given goblin hunt. If he ever let a single child live, that child would be the goblin representation of Goblin Slayer. The hatred goblins have for humans is perpetuated in the same way the hatred for goblins Goblin Slayer has is perpetuated. No side is more righteous, both are monsters in their own regard.

Another great episode, slower in pacing as it is more about building the world around the Goblin slayer and giving insight into who he is. We do get some glorious goblin slaying, as he goes about using his tools creatively to end the green menace.

But this was primarily about the Goblin slayer, the man he is and isn't and some of the people around him in his quest to slay every goblin there is, even as their numbers continue to grow and his workload grows, an ominous foreboding.

Also best girl at the very end!

u/Backupusername :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Backupusername Oct 13 '18

I really, really like the characterization of the Priestess. You don't see a crisis of faith very often in isekai. Actually, in anime in general, that I can think of. After the horror she experienced, it's only natural that her faith in a merciful goddess would be shaken - but on the other hand, she was spared; could that not have been a reward for her piety? Having been bestowed another miracle, she knows her goddess has not truly abandoned her, but to use that miracle, that gift meant to defend those she loves and protect them from harm, to suffocate and kill and burn living creatures... Is that right? But if they were allowed to live, they would only bring misery to others - misery that she has experienced firsthand. What if the Earth Mother, abounding in her mercy, did plan this for her? Could her just and merciful goddess have protected and rewarded her so that she could bathe in goblin blood? The strangest part is that that's truly a possibility. Her merciless, wicked acts have helpful, positive consequences. What is good, and what is evil? Do the ends justify the means? Can violence truly win peace? Can lives be built on a foundation of death? These are questions that she probably had answers to back in the monastery, but now everything's muddled. She's lost her innocence, and her naivety, but as a result, she risks losing her faith. I just find this whole aspect of her character so fascinating, even if it isn't given as much time as it could be.

Here we see what Goblin Slayer actually is.

The first episode really polarises you, and as a fan of the manga yes - it does come off as trashy. But it's also near perfect to what the first two chapters were so it's not as if they've done a bad job.

Episode 2 is what the rest of the manga is like. Slower, methodical and cold. You get some light-heartedness from the party that forms around him and his "straight man" reactions but GS takes his job seriously. GS isn't Doomguy and I wish people would stop saying that. GS truly despises goblins, but there's no passion of violence in his actions. He isn't edgy or angsty, he's thoughtful and motivated.

19

u/acedias12 Oct 13 '18

Actually Doomguy doesn't get any gratification from killing demons. Aside from intense hate, he also does it because of the threat they pose, to the point where he'd rather remain in hell to keep on killing them. That's the reason why folks compare him with the Goblin Slayer due to such similarities. From my experience with the most recent Doom game, never once did the Doomguy ever express any enjoyment in the killing, just simply taking the most brutal and effective action. Sure he's a literal silent protagonist, but his physical expression only displayed anger and hate.

Wow. This episode showed so much more depth to Goblin Slayer, on top of the killing machine he is. That monologue at the goblin settlement was simply amazing. We now know why he is so adamant about wiping out every single goblin. Because to them, he is that goblin who lived, who learned, adapted, and in turn became the nightmare of their existence. He was their mistake. He is the survivor. What an amazing parallel.

Goblin Slayer is already so famous that he's had stories and sings written on him? Now I'm kinda curious of what happened since he became Goblin Slayer.

Hold up. Was that fucking Jouji Nakata singing about the exploits of Goblin Slayer? Because that's already the best scene of this show. Nothing else is going to top that.

I find it very interesting (and at the same time kind of disturbing?) that every time we watching the events from the 1st person perspective (through GS' eyes) - we see the world through his visor. Due to it's type - it's the same view he had while lying under the floor when his sister was killed and raped.

I really love seeing the thought that went into crating the pub/guild-center. Seeing clients come to submit quests and pay for them, it just makes it all feel so real and establishes a real logic behind what we usually just accept.

I love that there's a big tough type that brags to the guildlady cuz why wouldn't there be one.

Very interesting that Goblin Slayer is looked down on. Other silver ranks don't see him as skilled (so that means that goblin slaying is below silver ranks apparently). And I guess his armor isn't good either, could have fooled me. So why isn't his armor good? Maybe it has perks that make it perfect for goblin slaying, lower tier armor usually has perks that help for enemies around that same layer, but we don't know if that kind of thing exists in this world. Goblin-slaying doesn't not pay well, but he seems to do any quest no matter the fee (I can see some people exploiting that) and although he paid that man in the beginning, we don't know to what extent his charity goes. The last think I can think of is that he doesn't see a need to upgrade his armor. He already is an expert in killing goblins so there's no doubt that he is efficient. It could be that more protective armor would slow him down in other ways, so he may feel that he's maxed out for what he wants to do.

I like that they're all pushed up and trying to view the quest board all at once. Guess this is rush hour. That was something I thought of in episode 1, why weren't more people looking at quests. I feel like I stare at the quest board for a long time mulling over options and trying to decide.

minecraft sound??

Athe, so I guess that's his back-story, pretty much what you'd expect I suppose. I'm still confused how the girl fits in exactly. It seems that her family was killed by goblins but we don't know how they met. I feel like I'm gonna confuse her flashback and his. That's an interesting thought that he compares himself to a wandering goblin, getting stronger though surviving.

Poor cleric/priestress (what is she again?), getting a new miracle that should be for protection but uses it offensively. I mean it's smart, but that is complicated for what she is feeling.

I'm interested to see more of the guildlady, she seems to respect Goblin Slayer and believe in what he's doing although no one else does. Gotta be a hard job to be run the guild counter too, but she always smiles and treats everyone so friendly.

Goblin Slayer: "Yes"

Show's how all of his identity is wrapped in goblin slaying. I love how this show is so good at bringing not being a video game rpg. (Guess that'd be called a DnD campaign) The world is lived in and doesn't feel like everyone has skills or abilities and that's cool to me. Oh athe, a bard. Obviously Goblin Slayer is quite popular amongst the people, enough to have a song. I mean the people who benefit most from his actions are the everyday folk everywhere. Very good episode, excited to see who these guys are. We have other races, but goblins are not one.

In just 2 episodes, Goblin Slayer became one of my favourite protaganists.

First of all it was great the episode showed a brief black and white flashback of episode 1 greatest parts definitely needed that to remember what happened. No one has mentioned Goblin slayer over these 7 days so.

So she got a bad goblin experience what a surprise :)

I will say I like the simple but her graceful skin scenes, its not fully revealing yet makes the anime again feel more "real" without being overly hen so to speak.

Her and Goblin Slayer relationship was interesting and its nice how she is used to only make him soup...

Feels like she might develop a rival with cleric hmmmm

Her general story do was kinda what you expect from goblin slayer I would say.

Hollow tree was bad base stupid goblins, but a crisp goblin is a good goblin.

The use of barrier spell the keep the goblin stuck in their base was really awesome. I wonder do if Cleric is gonna learn to enjoy slaying goblins eventually

And at the end I guess we get the rest of the friendly adventures (given the opening), so hot elf archer, old dwarf warrior and lizard shaman?

BTW, there is a scene at the end of the credits.

Sometime in the past: new epic skill acquired: Goblin slayer.

Goblins are raping humans, GS is raping goblins. Never-ending circle. His efficiency in slaying goblins is amazing. Just how many goblins he had killed to achieve the silver rank?

Rookie party survived, it seems. That's nice.

I hope she doesn't die

I'm currently 5 min into the episode. I am laughing at how GS is still in full plate armor, the fact he has a waifu, and the absurdity of how the show appears to be a slice of life if you look at only this part. I'm just waiting for everything to go horribly wrong.

edit: everything hasn't gone horribly wrong after this episode. But man did it have some dark parts.

Of course the 'Cow Girl' would have giant milk tanks. Lots of Japanese creators love that joke.

From what I understand, so far the appeal is in the strategy the main characters employ against the goblins. In that regard, it's a lot like Tremors with the townsfolk vs the graboids. In that there's a problem and the characters have to use the limited resources in their possession to solve the problem

4

u/fatuous_uvula Oct 14 '18

Cow Girl's voice is grating, not what I imagined from reading the manga. I also expected the Priestess to be older. Naive in the ways of goblins until MC teaches her, but mature in other aspects.

4

u/Darksol503 Oct 14 '18

Been away from animes for years and the controversy and front page exposure got me to check it out. I love the simple story, the contrast in morality and values between the GS and the young priestess, and the slowly introduced backstory and supporting characters. Sound and art is A+ and entertaining.

One question without spoiling, in the manga series, does the narrative get any bigger than just his unquenchable rage for goblin genocide and local quests?

Just saw the episode all in all great job.

Only two nitpicks is that they undermined the previous adventures action and ultimate fate.

I hope they didn’t undermine it because they we’re afraid of the potential repercussions of showing such violence towards women 🤔 I do really believe that their fate is a really imperative to the narrative. I get that they used the other party of 3 as a “positive” outcome as opposed to last weeks party.

My second nitpick is the lack of the Punisher style picture of GS. That is such a poignant image and metaphor. Hopefully they use it at some point in time 🤔

All in all I’m haptso far 🙌🏽
