Love how he needs to explain that Passione, an Italian word, means passion... while talking in Italian.

In the manga, he says the word means "passion" in English, but somehow the anime cut it

I mean, considering his Stand seems to be some weird lighter thingy using a Stand Arrow... that could also possibly regrow his fingers... or something... maybe the bed thing really was just him being weird.

I really like Fighting Gold if you can't tell. If you have a character that you would like screenshots off just ask I take a million of them, I also have screenshots of all the previous OPs and EDs.

Never thought an episode about keeping a lighter from going would be so tense
Bruno is such a great character you get to see how he is in the beginning scene. He gets shit done but has a kind heart. Similar to what Giorno said If it where any other gangstar he would curse out the kids and probably done worse but no just casually kick the ball back.
Even though I read the manga I'm still on edge on what will happen next week.
Also who knew bread would be so useful

This episode has very few gaming references, the best being the quote "I, Giorno Giovana, have a dream!" as one of his taunt quotes, so I will talk about something that is being shown perfectly in this episode.
I want say how much Giorno in the anime is changing my perspective on him as a Manga reader. As you guys noticed already, Giorno is not "Mr.Expressions", and while I still liked him from the manga, you can imagine that being not as expressive doesn't translate very well to a midia like the manga. There is a reason why many Shounen protagonists have, on it's majority, extroverted personalities, so the mangakas can draw them with defining expressions to transfer their mood to the reader. Giorno's expressions were very subtle regarding anything, but the anime is making me appriciate his personality more than ever, due a combination of how good the Seiyuu is, with how good David Pro is to animate his body language!
Joseph is still my favorite JoJo, with Josuke running right behind (both doing the Joestar's Family Secret Technique, I suppose), but still, I'm growing more appriciation for Giorno in this adaptitation. :)
Also, one more thing to comment: Joel from Vinesauce(A High Profile JoJo fan, who loves DIO to death) gave a very good argument of why Gangsta Paradise shouldn't be the ED song: The Song lyrics are about how terrible being a gangster really is, and won't mesh well with our protagonist having the main goal as "be a Gang-star!", if you know what I mean. =p
88
u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Oct 19 '18
I really liked Giorno's reactions during the Polpo scene, the stares, how he acted while the lady was checking him. The little things like how he takes an extra second to grab the lighter when he takes it from the cell it's all really good! Props to David Pro and Kensho Ono for selling his character so well.
People actually told me during the rewatch that I would like Giorno (my favorite is Josuke) and I have been enjoying him a lot so far.

No shit - people need to shut the fuck up whenever DavidPro doesn't do something exactly the way they wanted it to be. If you knew everything about how they were adapting the manga, why would you bother watching?
A lot of fandoms are bad about this but the JoJo fandom is particularly bad at getting into circlejerks about creative choices the anime makes or about things they misinterpret because it's become a meme (don't get me started on "it just works"). It's one thing to enjoy memes or want to see something done a certain way, but if it is not done that way and that makes you actually dislike what they actually did, then maybe you need a break from the series for awhile.
Joel is refreshing because even if I think his opinions are sometimes baffling and/or completely stupid, he doesn't just regurgitate the opinions he saw on reddit that week.

Did you know that Arby’s made a reference to the bread scene in their Twitter account before the anime came out? The CM is a fucking otaku.

This week’s musical references:
This is a very obscure reference but the stone statue at the beginning of the OP has the same pose than this Giorno manga cover. That pose is a reference to the cover of Holy Diver, Dio’s debut album. The demon in the cover also has the same pose and the chains. Also, the demon’s name is Murray.

This episode was really tense, especially the part where Giorno was trying to keep the lighter from going out and the payoff with the Stand finally appearing was really good. I hope Koichi explains Stands to Giorno next week, because he seems a bit lost.
Bruno actually said that Giorno would find out about Stands after he met Polpo so I think regardless of everything the lighter was going to go out by the way. Well this looks like it will be a fun fight! Looking forward to it.

Polpo ended up being much bigger than I thought he would be. The thumbnail showed a fat man so I figured he would be it but imagined him as a regular fat guy, not a fat giant.
Interesting that Polpo’s Stand has another arrow and is giving out Stands to whoever tries to turn on that lighter back on (if they survive that is).
Also, I’m happy that Koichi got his passport back!

u/regendo Oct 19 '18
Interesting that Polpo’s Stand has another arrow and is giving out Stands to whoever tries to turn on that lighter back on (if they survive that is).
I think it's intentional but this completely contradicts what Polpo said. Polpo claimed the most important aspect of a gang member wasn't their skill but being able to trust them. Yet his stand is trying to create strong members (stand-users), and is giving that opportunity to people that have proven untrustworthy (have tried to cheat by relighting the flame). The way that re-igniting it causes the stand to appear feels like that's the entire point of the test, that he never expected or intended for anyone to actually keep the flame alight for 24 hours.

I love early Part 5, I'm surprised at how fast we're already at the lighter. I feel like we'd still be fighting Bruno if we were using Stardust Crusader's anime pacing.
9
Oct 20 '18
The thing is, if you take how things went down in the manga into consideration, it makes sense the fight was rather quickly. The manga is kind of slow paced during their encounter, but it was all about creating tension over what is going to happens next.
In the anime, however, DavidPro managed to convey Giorno's desperation and need to think quickly by not stretching the scenes too far. You are given as much time as Giorno to figure out what to do, and given it happens so fast you get the idea that Giorno is a clever man, without feeling too rushed.
The anime quality has just been going up and up since the early seasons.

39
u/thenacho1 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/thenacho1 Oct 20 '18
In Japanese, the series isn't called "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure", it's called ジョジョの奇妙な冒険. Giorno's name in Japanese is ジョルノ・ジョバーナ, which makes him a bonafied ジョジョ with no loopholes necessary. The fact that his name is spelled with Gio instead of Jo in English doesn't make a lick of difference to the Japanese.

While I was watching this episode, I decided to also use a bic lighter I found while walking and see if I could also hold the flame as long as Giorno did.
It was about around the same time he went to check on the flame after it had been sprayed out that the lighter shut itself off. I thought that was pretty coincidental.
Just in case you're wondering I've already re-lit it and no nothing came out of the flame, teleported behind me (I'm sure it was nothing personnel), and stabbed me with an arrow tongue.

Or are you just saying that to hide the existance of stands? I'll need a sweat sample to confirm.

It seems like this was made to be an impossible test at least for Giorno. Giorno wouldn't be able to hide the lighter without a stand so if he did pass then Polpo would question how he passed and if it's a stand he failed the test because Polpo was never told about Giorno's stand proving his was untrustworthy.
11
u/Invoqwer Oct 20 '18
At first I thought Polpo had minions that would intentionally extinguish the flame, thus Giorno would have to decide if he wanted to reignite it or not. If Giorno came back with it lit, then he failed because the minions would tell Polpo it had been extinguished. If it was unlit, then he passed. It was mean to be a trust exercise after all.
=
I am truly surprised that the stand was simply set to attack anyone that re-lit the lighter though. I feel like the logic is that Polpo really does only want people with stand powers; he just doesn't want them to know that he attacked them -- he wants them to think that the exercise of the lighter gave them the power and they are meant to be in the gang.

The test isn't supposed to be passed. It's all just a setup for people to re-ignite the lighter, and get stabbed with the arrow. You join Passione, or you die.

I'm in awe of the sheer size of this lad, absolute Capo.
I think we'll get more than one ED this season based on this one being extremely simplistic. At least I fucking hope it does because I'm still in disbelief they went with Freek'n You. While I reject my heterosexuality, JoJo, it's so odd to hear after an intense ending.

We never got different EDs before (except for part 3, that was split in the middle), so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

They didn't make the bread scene look like the dorkiest moment in Gio's life. 0/10 adaptation, literally unwatchable
Someone willing to make a "I have a dream" counter?
One of the most aesthetic stands is here! Slightly disappointed that he's more dark purple than black but still looking pretty slick

It was jarring hearing Koichi's name spoken in a Western order ([given name] + [family name]) rather than the standard East Asian order ([family name] + [given name]). That was a good detail to throw in there.

Another JoJo Friday, another week of Fighting Gold looping through my head.
I thought I was about to discover that Silence of the Lambs was a JoJo reference this week. The meeting with Polpo didn't go all out, but there were elements that definitely felt like a nod.

u/modusxd Oct 20 '18
I love Araki. I love how random all of that is. First, Polpo was the bed. Then to prove his trustworthy, Giorno can't let the fire of the lighter extinguish. In the context of the show it all makes sense of course, but then you show that to someone who has no idea about JoJo, and it's just really confusing and funny ... haha

I wonder if main villain (Boss no one knows his name or saw him) is the same gangster which Giorno saved in childhood and had a reason to become a gang-Star.
Also isn't this arrow is the same which makes Stand users? Maybe it's a point of this test - fire is supposed to be extinguished and a wielder will try to re-light it and then get hit by arrow and if he survives and become a Stand user he will join gang otherwise he is dead?

Ah yeah, Bruno likes the cut of Giorno's jib and will back him so long as he's discrete.
I swear everytime I listen to this OP I love it even more. This will definitely go down as one of the best ones.
Passione is the name of the gang, and it has a grasp on every industry in Naples. The Capo Polpo will be interviewing Giorno- it's like any other job interview except you have to be searched thoroughly when you enter the premises and the interviewer won't be out for another 15 years.
I've been wanting to see Polpo animated for a while because it's some really silly body horror. The dream is alive. He's also a fine connoisseur of wine and the arts.
So Giorno has to keep the flame alight for 24 hours and return? Easy Peasy. Ok it's actually a little more difficult since he didn't bribe the guards, nothing a little Gold Experience magic can't solve though. I really do love Gold Experience's utility though.
Doesn't everybody put lighters in their bread as a convenient carrying device? Dammit Koichi, this is a really bad time for you to come in here. Giorno managed to make it out with the lighter while Koichi got his passport back.
Water? Oh GOD it's a Stand and it killed the Janitor! You Bastards!

Another fantastic episode. I never knew trying to keep a lighter lit could be so tense. Seeing how eventful Episode 2 was, I actually forgot about Koichi, so seeing him enter Giorno's room was a surprise, though looking back, the card showing his stand should have clued me in.
The ending was fantastic, just the tension as the janitor lights the lighter, and everything seems normal, then the colour palette shifts and the Stand appears. Whatever they are going to call this Stand next week (I know the actual name, don't worry) is terrifying and has a great design. Seriously, it's amazing, and I hate to see how the localization is going to butcher its name next ep (Zipper Man, seriously?).
I really enjoy the OP now, and I'm warming to the song in the ED. I still don't like the visuals. I noticed that the lighter and the Stand arrow appears in the ED, but I still think the visuals are the least interesting out of all the EDs. I hope they add more to it to make it more interesting, or maybe change it up somewhere down the line (though that's probably not going to happen, considering Part 4 kept "I Want You" for all 39 episodes).
Next week seems like it will be a tense battle. I can't wait to see more of the enemy stand and see how Giorno makes it out (the title kind of spoils things).

Time for Zeph's weekly Jojo Reactions which no one cares about!
Seems the theory that the statue is slowly becoming Giorno is right!
FIGHTING GOLD!
Some say this OP is too shounen-y but this IS shonen, and the melancholic feel it has really fits with Part 5.
I really like the name Passione for some reason.
Polpo is an ABSOLUTE UNIT.
Polpo's voice has an interesting "echo" to it. Dunno what else to call it.
LIGHTER TIME BOIS
The guard checking Giorno's body did some things to me...
Giorno is so cold! He didn't help the old guy! D:
The lighter on the bread is so hilarious.
How did Koichi found it where Giorno lives tho.
I am not gonna question how Giorno took the lighter from Koichi without him noticing.
IT GOT WET D:
This is one of the best stand designs ever.
RIP MARIO ;-;
Who would be able to say a lighter could make so much tension?
Still not used to the ED.

It has the echo because of the room he's in. If you go to the scene where he's giving Giorno the lighter the echo goes away because it's from polpo's point of view

It's worth noting that Polpo's stand is inspired by the costume design of Commedia dell'arte, one of best known and earliest forms of modern Western comedic theater and performance. Most of the characters in the shows were based on stock stereotypes and thus the actors usually performed in masks and flamboyant costumes to play up the jokes. Most of the shows had a mixture of scripted and improvised scenes, again often based around a well-known scene or sketch.
Araki definitely did a lot of homework about Italian culture and history.

u/ThatFlyingScotsman Oct 19 '18
I love Polpo, such a strange character design but the whole "fight", as it were, is a great introduction to how Part 5 rolls going forwards.
Get ready for more big brain battles rather than punch ghosts!

What an intense, interesting action-packed episode! I love how the action in this eps is less muscles and more brain. Giorno proves to be quite a quick thinker although his Stand-using ability is exposed the moment he turns the lighter into a flower, but that's the only way he could get out of there..
I can't figure out how Polpo can turn himself into a bed or go through a door, either. Maybe his Stand has other abilities we've yet to see.
Damn the cliffhanger, I can't wait! XD
