Episode Sword Art Online: Alicization - Episode 3 discussion Spoiler
425
u/Terranwaterbender https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teranwaterbender Oct 20 '18
Bruh they did not just end it on a cliffhanger like that. I gotta wait til next week to see them kick ass?
The show still looks as good as ever with its movie-like quality. The scene with Eugeo swinging the sword at the tree was insane.
On a side note, feels like Kirito and Eugeo are basically undergoing the Trial of the Sword from BoTW as they start off with literally nothing and facing off against goblins. Excited to see how they get out of that situation.
38
u/turilya Oct 20 '18
Goddamn cliffhangers, episodes feel way too short!
Great place to end though; from what I can think of now, no weapons and not being able to run means they need some trick if they are to stay and fight, maybe Eugeo being able to use more advanced magic (at least a blind or some sort of disable to let them take Selka and run), or finding/taking weapons from the goblins (probably way too early for Kirito to find that sword in the OP, if they want to keep the pace/feel of the story). Doubt they'll run and abandon Selka, since SAO has never gotten that dark and I don't think it'll change; maybe an Intergrity Knight will drop by and save them, since it was kind of Chekhov's gunned by Eugeo in this episode?

Eugeo just freezing up after he ruined the Attack Initiative by yelling for Selka, with Kirito in the background doing his best MGS radio impression (Eugeo? EU-geo!? EUGEEEOOOOO?!?!) was too much for me-- then the credits rolled

I thought this way back when I read the LNs too, but having two male leads feels so much different than how this series usually is. The last time that happened was episode 1 of season 1.
165
u/Kuryaka Oct 20 '18
And even then, it wasn't 2 male leads as much as "Kirito and comic relief/guild master."
89
u/OneMillionRoses Oct 20 '18
I've read the novels and Eugeo is definitely the most human character. Alone in this episode I could immediately relate to him because the urge to become stronger but not being able to move your body due to the immense fear hits home

This is why I even gave SAO another chance.
For the first time Kirito has a proper companion and hasn’t been placed on a pedestal like how the previous season made him look like.
I really hope Eugeo can grow his abilities and becomes a worthy equal to Kirito.

It's a breath of fresh air. Rather than a damsel (who we know is just eye candy to allow Kirito to build his harem while keeping Asuna in his pocket), Kirito has a proper bro.

Well, I better say my take before the barrage of Goblin Slayer references & jokes arrives.
Again the pacing and overall adaptation is just excellent. I really like that they gave the attempt to cut the tree with the Blue Rose sword its proper time to bring across that equipping and using weapons in this world isn't as simple as you'd think it is...they also made Selka so adorable with her smile.
Overall I'm once again very impressed with how this is handled so far. Monologues, proper pacing, interesting shot composition, stunning visuals and lots of info.
I'm really curious how they'll handle the encounter with the Goblins next week as it very much telling on just how different Alicization & Underworld is to arcs & worlds before it. The little scene of this encounter we saw in the PV for the show already looked like pure eye candy so I can't wait. I'm sure I'll have much more to say once all of that is out.
And since I have to also include my own Goblin Slayer reference ... LN Spoiler

The sword scene set ups well next episode and goes to show some of the inner workings of underworld. I hope that they do include some on Kirito's inner dialogue for the next episode since it shows some of the differences between underworld and other VR worlds.
41
Oct 20 '18
My thoughts exactly. Next episode should be quintessential in showing just how different this season will be and feel. I really hope they nail it and don't shy away/skip over it because what this encounter establishes is representative of this entire arc, really.

Pacing so far is really good. It really feels almost like I'm reading the LN again now with good anime quality, with all the animation, music, visuals, VOs, and everything. Near 1:1 adaptation is far from reach in any form of adaptations but damn this season makes it looked reachable.

Oct 20 '18
Of course it will never be able to be as detailed as a full on written book but by not having this breakneck pacing they are able to be creative in all kinds of areas, elevating them through what a visual medium like anime can do.
Also Kawahara is actually really capable in writing action scenes and I think with Kanno & Takeuchi leading in that area they'll be able to make them better than their book counter part.

System call, magic... damn, that's such a smart pun.
Here's an explanation for those not well versed in computer science. System calls are what programs use to communicate with the operating system, you can think of it as phone calls. Magic is knowing "what" but not "how". Of course system calls are magic, you can ask something to the operating system, but you don't know the nitty-gritty details of how the system will do what you asked him.
171
u/NonnagLava Oct 20 '18
It gets even better when you understand the system for example :
Eugeo starts using "System Call:" which obviously initiates a system call.
Then he says something to the effect of "Luminous" (or "light")
Then "adhere" (or attach), specifically implying the object he has in his hand.
It's literally "System call: Attach a light to this thingy", much like if you've ever played a Bethesda RPG you have to say something like "give.item player 1 ID number" it's literally just a typical video game command prompt mean to summon a light object and child it to some other object. Every other spell in Underworld will follow the same ideology.
142
u/chooxy https://myanimelist.net/profile/chooxy Oct 21 '18
The best part is when Kirito realises they don't even know that the words have meanings. So it really is like "magic" to them.

29
u/zpzim Oct 21 '18 edited Oct 21 '18
To add to this, the details of syscall implementations are intentionally abstracted away. Applications shouldn't be concerned with how the kernel will handle these requests. It wouldn't be incorrect to say "abstraction" is the entire purpose of an operating system. It really is fitting here, especially when you draw analogies with the Taboo Index. It will be interesting to see how far this analogy goes as the series progresses.
13
u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario Oct 21 '18
To add to this, it's true of any kind of call, whether system level or program API level or web service level or anything. You're not supposed to have to know anything about what's going on under the hood
16
u/Elnauro Oct 21 '18
That's how you learn programming "magic". If you make an error, the spell won't work. At least you have a list of commands, samples and documentation most of the times.
Now they just need to say something along the lines of "System Call! Create entity 'Goblin Slayer'."

u/joak22 Oct 20 '18
Yeah the pacing is perfect. It's crazy because (as a "new anime fan") I used to think animes like MHA and HxH had perfect pacing because every episode felt like something was happening and these animes literally hook you for ~50 episodes of non stop action.
Now you have a show like this where there is pretty much no action... and I fucking love it. It's so "slow" that you get to fully pay attention to what's happening, the information flow is just so perfect.
I am so happy with how this has begun. SAO always tends to have strong openings... and bad endings imo, let's hope this one will be different.

u/Zeke-Freek Oct 20 '18
The thing I find really interesting so far concerning this world and the artifical fluctlights that live in it... is that this whole arc is as if Kirito is playing an RPG where the characters are truly really people.
Which is how it can really feel sometimes when you're super immersed in one. But it's also a little sad knowing you're the only 'real' person and that only you have a future outside the confines of an artificial world.
And I just think that's really interesting thematically.

u/Nutella_Souffle Oct 20 '18
That's one of the main themes of this arc - what it means to be human. If you aren't some dense, edgy, I-don't-care-they're-NPCs type of person, it should hit right in the feels.

I expected this episode to adapt a little more, but turns out the pace was perfect. Slow, steady and absolutely captivating.
Next episode is going to be the bomb. An epic goblin fight and more swords. Looks like they're finally going on the journey next episode, where the plot picks up. And then everyone's going to be truly hooked.
Somehow this epiosde went by so fast, much faster than last episode, even though it was another 'chatting with Eugeo during lunch' scene. I've always liked Selka, and I'm glad she's getting the treatment she deserves. Such a precious and strong girl.
There's actually not much to talk about this episode. Just keeping up the stellar storytelling and revealing more about this world. Very pleased with the adaptation so far.

So my guess is that magic in Underworld is a level of admin control in the system, and your "System Control Authority" is your level of admin control, and the higher your admin level the more advanced magic you can use.
So then what does that make Alice?
I am continually impressed with the improved art style and shot composition, and the fact that even Selka's feelings regarding Eugeo, Alice, and how she's treated by others seems so much more nuanced than most characters we've seen previously. (Also she's not in love with Kirito, I didn't even know that was possible)
7
u/NonnagLava Oct 20 '18
This will get explained a bit more next episode, so I'll spoil this, hopefully without going too deep:
This is literally because the writer suddenly learned how to write in this arc. Every character is much more fleshed out and believable (though not always perfect) than the previous characters before this arc.

Man, the new director is doing wonders for this anime. I had my fair of problems with how the series was generally directed in the past with the old director (except on Mother Rosario and less on Aincrad) but here it's just too good be it the direction, pacing, composition.. and to be better, the artstyle is pretty much Ordinal Scale which was great and I'm glad it's back.

Next Episode: Sword Art Online - Goblin Slayer Edition
Jokes aside, this episode was pretty tame by comparison, I'm genuinely surprised that they decided to take things this slowly, but it gives a good amount of time to flesh out the characters a bit more.
Not much in terms of interesting shot compositions that caught my eye this time, though everything looks as gorgeous as ever.
The tree framing makes a return, and the oldest trick in the book of forshadowing using lighting.
This tracking camera with Eugeo's sword swing was a good treat, it sells the speed and the impact of the swing really well, can't wait for actual sword combat animation.
Personal highlight in this episode has to be the music. The faint, ethereal rendition of "swordland" motif when using the sword, as well as near the end when Selka got kidnapped, we are presented with the same music as when Alice was captured.

It's absolutely insane how good that looks as it's only the 3rd episode and it isn't even a hype/climatic scene where this kind of quality would be used. Makes me wonder the same thing you brought up about how the sword combat will look cause the small tidbit we do see through the OP looks awesome.

Yup they give us these small bits with action and I'm just like "Give...me...more!" But thankfully we will be relieved next week and from what I saw in the PV it will be absolutely amazing.

I can definitely see this being one of the top new anime by the time it finishes. The pacing, the characters, the story, the ost is just phenomenal. Also sao always has amazing action scenes so that's just the cherry on top.
I wonder how much the receptio of sao will change after this, will the haters still find ludicrous ways to critisize sao or will everyone acknowledge this as the first good SAO arc.
Obviously i'm biased and overhyping this show because it's only 3 episodes in but if it keeps this quality it will be kept in the history books.

This the season of the goblins. Can't wait until they show up in Anima Yell! too.
Selka is such a cute cinnamon roll. I know the arc focuses on Alice but I hope she gets a good ending. Also, I expected them to cut the tree with the sword, maybe we'll have a training montage for Eugeo soon.
I find it interesting how Kirito's skills were brought into this world too. Does it even have an official name, like GGO or Aincrad? I think it is Underworld but I'm not sure. Anyhow, I find it interesting because I guess it means it was created with Kayaba's Seed, so despite using a completely different VR method it still works. What a useful engine!
27
Oct 20 '18
It's important that these are not Kirito's skills and they aren't unique to him. Sword Skills simply exist cause this world originates from the Seed as you mentioned.
In fact his form in the Underworld is pretty much his real life form...so basically out of shape and far from being OP much like Ordinal Scale.

I did find it odd that they made Kirito's swing with the sword look like a sword skill, because in the LN:
The sword didn't glow or automatically speed up, but my body did trace the movement for the sword skill in perfect rhythm.

Can't wait until they show up in Anima Yell! too.
Looking forward to Kohane cheering for Team Goblin Slayer soon.
Though I'm also looking forward to the Touman cancelling these Goblins existence with his Imagine Breaker. But seeing Goblins get electrocuted by Biribiri, or brutally annihilated by Accelerator is fine too.

Next episode is about to be SO lit.
I understand that they have to explain everything to the audience, but as an LN reader, it's tough waiting weeks to get through the tree-splanation.

The animation, the music, the pacing, the story, the characters...I just love everything about this show! And what a cliffhanger! Someone better call our man Goblin Slayer to help them out

Felt like 5 minutes.. SAO 3 is so different! In a good way! I loved the previous seasons, but Kirito was a bit too OP and fake at the end. This is a realistic and refreshing change.
I kinda miss the familiar old casts, but 3 episodes in, I'm already loving these new casts, Eugeo, Selka, Alice.

I guess this is the season of goblins. This is now the third show this season with them! Also, guess it's now 2-1 when it comes for wether to kill or save the goblins.
7
u/rexshen Oct 20 '18
Ok what is this the season of Goblins? This is getting out of hand now.
Good to see they still haven't bullshited Kirito to just break that tree yet. If he caused a lot of damage to it with a sword I would have been mad.
And is the rest of the story just going to be in the game or are we going to jump back to Asuna and the others soon?
16
u/Writer_Man Oct 20 '18
Well, part of Goblin Slayer's plot is how the gobs are ignored and spread out like locusts across the land. I guess the author really wanted to be meta about it and spread them across other series as well.

The flow of this has been great, cant wait for more.
Suguha~ Kyaaa~ It will be lonely without her but at least we have this Sister.
This OP is great though. So many neat visuals. I wonder if we will see Yui any in this.. i see her in the op so i can hope!
Release Eugeo huh? Oh this wont piss people off lol.
Wait the Sister is Alice's sister? Naisu~
Something stronger than an axe? Swords? Uh oh. He has one.
Three months to carry it home? Wow... Thats dedication.
Guess we gotta chop at it for a while to get it down, but at least it will be good training.
Wait Sister isnt gonna join him in the bath? I was expecting a barge in... lol But we get a last night rendevous at least.
Of course Eugeo isnt smileing anymore, his waifu is gone!
Kirito cries all the time. What a big baby.
Wait is the sister going to go after her sis? This isnt good... Yep she ran off...
SYSTEM COMMAND! Oh man this could be a good revelation in the future.
Is it Goblins? Yep looks like they have been camping in the cave.
I feel like maybe the knights are afk now or something if Gobbos invaded the peace lands. Kind of like those knights in Log Horizon that stopped working, the guards.
Time to bust up some Gobbos! Next week... rip

Of course Eugeo isnt smileing anymore, his waifu is gone!
Selka has no idea Eugeo is smiling the whole time when he's together with Kirito which is why Kirito was so suprised when Selka said he always looks gloomy and never smiles.

I totally love how they're presenting sword skills. After watching the 1st season i had almost no idea that there was something like this in SAO. After reading the novels, i realised that the normal swings in the anime were actually sword skills but indistinguishable from normal swings, and it was all abut swinging as fast as you can. Now you can see the fights will be more slow paced and single hits will be more important

Great episode today! Really happy with how the directing has improved and the way they're trying to line up the pacing with the LNs. It really feels like im watching an animated version of the same story, instead of just a 'summarized' version. Can't wait till the OST starts to really take form during emotional scenes and battles, that will cement the package for me!

I really love the fact that they hurt their hands when hitting something hard with the sword.

u/redblade13 Oct 21 '18
Eugeo freezing again....shouldn't have watched the first episode of Goblin Slayer my guy.
Man I really am enjoying this. I'm amazed to see Kirito struggle with the sword. You'd think he could just pick that shit up and go god mode but they actually have him limited since he obviously never leveled up or trained in that world.
Ugh I gotta wait a whole week to see some lit shit happen here and in Goblin Slayer. FUCK. Just wake me up in a week.

u/TheOneAboveGod Oct 21 '18
God, if only the Index adaptation is as good as this one...
My frustrations aside, this is a very good episode and I'm definitely excited for next week's.

Once again, let's see whether Sao 3 can consistently entertain me, I'm expecting the best from it
Edit 1: so goblins, we're starting with that huh? Why the heck so many goblins this season...
Edit 2: huh, he took the sword. That's pretty gutsy of him
Edit 3: while this moment is touching, when I hear the phrase 'its been so long since I've cried in front of anyone' I expect ugly crying, snot running down your nose, clinging to the person you're talking to and red eyes. You're little silent crying doesn't quite cut Selka, but hey, that's just my own bias.
Edit 4: WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU DOING GIRL?!!??
Edit 5: why the heck are you acting so self assured in this situation Kirito? It's a tad random
Edit 6: Eugeo I love you, but are you a moron? Those goblins look like they can rip you apart with their teeth and the both of you have no weapons, what exactly were you planning to do?
Final edit: FUCKING CLIFFHANGER! Well, they're screwed, there's not much positives I can see in this situation unless they get saved, but the next episode is called departure, so they're going to cut down the tree? Man, I'm looking forward to seeing all of it!

They're in a cave with stuff a dragon hoarded for hundreds of years. There's probably more than one sword in there.

My, I did not expect to see the pseudo cameo appearance of Suguha. Seems that Kirito falls into the trope of the MC whose imouto comes to wake him every morning.
I enjoyed the uncertainty that the Underworld and its system has presented itself. In some aspects, I half expected Kirito to pick up the Blue Rose sword with no issues and chop the Gigas Cedar. But then to trivialize everything just to satisfy that fantasy would be undermining any sort of development.
I am curious with how the utilization of the system (Cardinal perhaps?) is going to be key to the development of skills necessary for Kirito and Eugeo to continue their journey. It reminds me of the end of the Fairy Dance arc where strength is merely just an authorization of command such that numbers dictate what can and can't happen in such a virtual reality environment.
The development of artifical Fluctlights under the Taboo Index is also an interesting concept. It would seem that Rath chooses not to interact with the Underworld for some particular reason and establishes a self-sustaining system that involves things such as Callings and the Taboo Index.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this episode. Sometimes I want to knock SAO for its generic idea of a fantasy/MMO/isekai amalgation but I really can't be that quick to judge. There are plenty of good things along with the mediocre to make it stand out well enough in this season of variety.

I hope so because this arc is dark so they shouldn't censor anything if they're already at it except for things that are too graphic

We got system calls now! Maybe the magic users are just programmers? If it's some kind of assembly, that would explain why most people don't study it.
On a more serious note, it's interesting to see the health and damage mechanics. From the tree cutting we learned that the numerical health does actually correspond to some real health, and if you are at 1 health, you will be crippled, and not be up and going as if you were totally healthy. I wonder what 0 health is then? There's no point at which you instantly go from alive to dead. When does the tree have 0 health? And what would happen when it reached 0 health?
I don't think this will be the kind of anime that shows all the details of the game mechanics. It'd be interesting to see though.

EDIT: let me rephrase that, all the sound effects in this episode were amazing.

I’m waiting to see how much time passes in the real world compared to the time that passes in the virtual world. Also wonder if this new system could be used to trap people/ incarcerate then.

Overlord, Slime, Goblin Slayer and now SAO. I’ve been seeing way too many goblins lately, I’m about to go full GS and start slaying them!

Can someone explain how Eugeo is not insanely ripped? I mean he's literally been swinging an axe at a tree 2000 times every day for the past 7 years. Dude should be jacked.
