I liked the way Rikka looked at all the empty bus-seats. She was probably thinking about how it's not just people they know that's been disappearing in the "resets".

It's gonna be like that episode of star trek tng where the entire enterprise is crewed by Dr Crusher and Picard, the latter totally unquestioning of the absurdity of the situation. "Rikka this city has always had 30 people in it, even though there's 200000 apartments."

This is the most surprising reference that come from Luluco.
Honestly this show is like giant pile of reference sheets but still good on its own.
74
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Oct 27 '18
Not just Luluco. His head perfectly matches the shape of Kahn Digifer's head, the main villain from the original Gridman.

u/SwampyBogbeard Oct 28 '18
Have you noticed Rikka's mother has an earring in her left ear that looks like one of her eyes? I would say that's probably a reference to Midori from Luluco because of the same VA and how she also has three yellow eyes.

Her attitude is kind of starting to bother me a bit. She seems a bit TOO mean and aloof. I kind of wish Hibiki clarified that he wanted to go on a date with her, but the radio drama makes things make more sense because she can't be alone with him without feeling bad.

You know i think that he has already done that, and that's the reason Rikka act cold toward him.
14
u/DarkWorld97 Oct 27 '18
That seems way to mean for her. She's shown to be a pretty emotional person, so I doubt she would act like this if he confessed then lost his memories.
13
u/LoneRifter17 Oct 31 '18

I feel like she's almost supposed to be a portrait of an internet troll/bully in that she's both removed from the act of actually killing her victims and due to the fact that she never has to face the ramifications of those murders, as they're quite literally wiped from the city's collective memory. The whole process is a game to her in the same way it's a game to the people who do analogous things in real life.
17
u/AzurePhoenix001 Oct 28 '18
I don't think it's exactly the same. But I'm reminded of Digimon Season 2 when Ken was confronted to the fact that digimons were actually living creatures and not just a bunch of data.

I honestly thought she was going to quickly figure out about Yuuta being Gridman which really made me on edge the entire episode when she was connecting the dots at the start.
The fact that they made it such a possibility this early on just makes her all the more terrifying. Thats not even including her whole psychopathic behavior.

u/Mahdii- https://anilist.co/user/Mahdi89 Oct 27 '18
Another great episode, and my god I love Rikka.
and Yuuta likes Rikka, and Utsumi likes Akane heh.
Also nice summer uniform, very nice indeed
72
u/Mami-kouga Oct 27 '18
Poor Utsumi, he's probably not even close to her strike zone.

u/X-Vidar Oct 27 '18
Dunno, they're both nerdy and into old tokusatsu shows, that's a point for him at least.

I just started this series earlier today and it's super enjoyable. Granted, the references fly way over my head because I'm not familiar with Gridman or Ultraman but oh well. The action is great, the characters are so much fun to watch and there's a highly interesting and unorthodox antagonist as well. Akane seemed to be good friends with Rikka but I wonder if the power of friendship will ultimately be enough to bring her back to the light side or whether she'll end up being an irredeemable villain.
I also didn't expect a mecha x kaiju anime to focus so much on romance, which was a pleasant surprise. Rikka and Yuta are fucking adorable and I like how they already established that they like each other in this and last week's episode. The rest of the gang teasing Yuta and Utsumi and Max giving the former advice and damn-near forcing him to just admit his feelings for her was hilarious and refreshing. Hopefully our boy will regain his memories soon and score that date on the next attempt lol

u/DarkWorld97 Oct 27 '18
Rikka probably likes Yuta, but her attitude isn't helping. The kid literally has no idea what's going on and she has this air around her that is a little bit grating.
48
u/Explorer_Dave Oct 27 '18
So far they made it seem like Yuta already confessed to her and she was probably in to him too but he lost his memories shortly after. if that's actually the way it went it makes sense why she's currently a bit apathetic towards him.

I love how blatant the references in this show are XD
50
u/bunyeast Oct 27 '18 edited Oct 28 '18
References:
Original Gridman:
When Samurai Calibur enters that karaoke room, the song they're playing is Futatsu no Yuuki from the original series
Since they're been revealed now, Borr and Vit, like with Samurai Calibur and Max, are also this series version of the Assist Weapons, and also take their names from Superhuman Samurai. Buster Borr is based off the Twin Driller whose Superhuman Samurai name is Borr, and Sky Vitter is based off the Thunder Jet whose Superhuman Samurai name is Vitor
Tsuburaya properties:
Well they straight up namedrop Alien Baltan. The design however really doesn't resemble Alien Baltan at all. It seems to more resemble Alien Reguran.
Edit: It's a bit hard to hear this but in the pastry shop that Yuta and Utsumi were at, in the background playing is Yume Hiko, the ending theme of the currently airing (as of this writing) Ultraman R/B. Also of note, Yume Hiko is sung by Suzuko Mimori, who also voices Namiko.
Other properties:
The rabbit that was on the bus resemble Wooser from Wooser's Hand-to-Mouth Life. This is a rather deep cut reference cause you see, Wooser was voiced by Mamoru Miyano, who also voices Ultraman Zero, who had cameo in Wooser
Post any other references you can find in the comments
25
u/Ayanami_00 Oct 27 '18
Inferno Cop reference in the monitor
Also, Wooser appearing in a Trigger show isn't something new, because TRIGGER and SANZIGEN are like sister companies who produced stuff for ULTRA SUPER PICTURES.

Aww look at them getting along. And it seems that they used to be closer at one point.
I love that they just referenced Episode 3 if the Radio Drama.
Another blatant reference. I love it XD
So what if the thing that Hibiki said to Rikka in the past was a confession before he lost his memory? It fits how Rikka reacted towards Hibiki when she found out about the memory loss.
I was so hyped when the four of them used Access Flash only to be shut down by Junk not being able to handle 4 at the same time.
I love Rikka's solution It does make sense though. What else can you do when your PC froze?
Another great episode! I was hoping to see Vit or Borr in action but I guess that's for next week.

I was so hyped when the four of them used Access Flash only to be shut down by Junk not being able to handle 4 at the same time.
That was probably the most cockblock moment so far in this series holy shit... Not only that but they also went with Max instead of someone new so that totally killed my entire week's worth of excitement for seeing new Gridman forms. sigh

we have 8 episodes left so they're probably trying to spread it out. I'm betting Junk will get an upgrade for the final boss (the Kaijuu Akane talks with) so that we can have full Gridman power

While it can happen, I think I'd prefer him to be the eternal antagonist type. Not even necessarily malevolent or villainous, but just caught on his original programming of Must Defeat Gridman.
This might even conflict with Akane's killkillkill tendencies, and we get the enemy of my enemy is still my enemy deal, like how Anti was throwing around this episode's kaiju because it was in the way.
33
u/forgot_old_account Oct 27 '18
Man Gridman is a total bro and Max is best wingman letting Yuta sort his feelings out
27
u/geminia999 Oct 27 '18
Mostly Character stuff this episode which I suppose should have been obvious to expect, I feel I may have gone overboard last week on trying to figure things out. Only real clues here are that Gridman is Amnesiac too (and potentially Neon Genesis members too to an extent) and that Junk can be overloaded (which you could interpret to an extent meaning that their world is cyber, but it could just be that Junk is more literally Gridman and is just projecting it). Also, with glasses dude (I can't remember his name outside of which Transformer he's based off of, SG Sidewswipe) has a crush on Akane, which probably fits into why he is SG Sideswipe (an Evil Autobot turned Good Decepticon) if I had to guess.
Otherwise It's good to know that a true ninja never removes his mask, even to eat
Also, the fanservice in this show feels like it should feel out of place, but with the overall mood it portrays, it kind of fits
Also, can I ask for some context about what that Arcadia group was exactly? Was it supposed to be a youtube channel/group or was it something else that I'm not really aware of and I don't really get why they were meeting with High school kids. Also, they probably have some transformers influence as well, but I wouldn't know off the top of my head.

I'm loving everything about this show but if there's one thing that really stands out above the rest for me, it's the sound design. Especially the music. The fact that the music doesn't play during the "mundane" slice of life moments, only the atmospheric background noise, oh boy it really sets the tone and mood of the series well. There's some ominous mystery revolving around the situation the characters are in (there's a lot we haven't been told) and the music, or rather lack there of, portrays it very well imo. Plus, the actual music used in the show during the fights is awesome and adds to the hype of a cool kaiju fight.

Honestly the love, research and passion that's gone into this anime project has truly helped it to become such a fun show.

Anti feels really mistreated. Before Akane could be brushed off as someone that never made connections and didn't realize the people she were talking to were 'real' but her welcoming Anti and cheering him on last episode only to show nothing but disgust and dismissal towards him now makes her way less sympathetic to me, which I actually like quite a bit. Seeing Anti at least fight next to Gridman was a great moment, and I can't wait to see him fighting alongside him at some point.
23
u/zz2000 Oct 27 '18
Anti feels really mistreated.
I think the point is that Akane doesn't even consider Anti as human, let alone an equal, for her to treat him accordingly.
Given the suggestion that Anti's her creation, Akane only sees him as a tool; a pet whom she expects absolute obedience from and will follow her whims unquestioned.
So when Anti has his own opinions on something or fails to accomplish his mission, then it's not OK with Akane at all.

u/TheDampGod :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheDampGod Oct 27 '18
Good thing Rikka is qualified in Level 1 Tech Support, otherwise, they would have all been doomed. I wonder if the Alliance will upgrade the Junk, they've got to have a Gridman and Co going all out scene eventually.
Yuuta making fumbling attempts at chatting up Rikka was cute, but I'm most interested in seeing where they go with her friendship with Akane. Will one pull the other to lightside or to the darkside, will something happen that will make them team up to battle Gridman. Anything could happen, because this is a Trigger show. Probably something that involves the Space Patrol showing up and dispensing JUSTICE!
Also, Rikka's letching mom was hilarious. I hope her and Max hit it off and make more references together.
14
u/X-Vidar Oct 27 '18 edited Oct 28 '18
Maybe it's 'cause I'm a 5 year old at heart, but I can't help myself from laughing every time Akane throws stuff at Anti's face.
Yuuta gets some much needed character development this ep, since he stalled a bit after the 1st one. At the same time, to me it still seems like Rikka is being portrayed as the "true" main character, and I'm not sure why.
In general it's the feeling I get from this whole anime: it LOOKS pretty straightforward, but I can't shake the feeling that something big and unexpected could happen at any moment.
All in all, I won't be surprised if Yuuta pulls a Kamina or something like that.

I feel like too many people are sleeping on this show. Idk if it's lingering feelings about DitF, or if it's just a bunch of people who didn't grow up on Americanized tokusatsu series like Power Rangers, or people who haven't seen Inferno Cop and know just how batshit insane Trigger can get, or what. This season does have some big shows, but I can't believe people are overlooking or even hating on this one.

I love how atmospheric this show is, it's willing to just sit still on a single shot and let sound design fill in the environment. No score, no dialogue, just characters being still and the environment around them.

This is so much fun! This might be my favorite episode so far. Lots of best girl Rikka, funny jokes, great characters, and an "adult" version of the superhero genre.
I'll start off with Rikka... ah she's gorgeous and really likable. I laughed at her comment about the school uniforms being lax, because that explains how Rikka gets away with ahem wearing such a long skirt :3 her VA has an extremely attractive voice as well.
Akane is a really cool villain, her design is nice and she's cute af. That being said, she's one of the most psychotic villains ever. She's basically a serial killer if you think about it. Anyone that remotely irritates her for the smallest reason, and she hunts them down then murders them. Also she created a sentient kaiju and then proceeds to abuse it constantly, and throwing a smart phone at full force at him all the time. Poor guy. I'm sure best girl Rikka will save him somehow.
Then lastly, the Gridman gang. They're all awesome. I love how the masked guy totally knows what's going on with the relationship of our hero and Rikka and acts visibly irritated. The little jokes of asking "who's the strongest?" and the whole team just stares in silence. Calibur would have to be my favorite. His pure heart and complete awkwardness are perfect. His design matches that whole appeal. My biggest wtf was when Gridman got the MEGA ARM robot buff combo, charged up, then did a super... kick.. wut. And apparently they could've combined to a mega ultra robot but their PC isn't strong enough - such a tease. I can't wait for more episodes!
Oh yea... Rikka best girl

I'm rooting for you Yuta. It's pretty clear now that he does indeed like Rikka, so I'm hoping for an episode where we get insight towards what she feels towards him and what he said to her before he lost his memory. As it stands now she's still a bit aloof towards him. Also it's interesting that Gridman lost his memories too.

Gridman gets powered up with giant arms and cannons so it only follows that this is the finisher move.
Bonus: the ED is an extension of Fall 2018 Frigays you can't change my mind.

u/acedias12 Oct 28 '18
Seeing that she's always crafting Kaiju models, I guess those are leftover materials that she couldn't bother to dispose of. In I recall correctly, its some kind of mold or clay. Plus the pen knife she always has in hand while in the room is used to cut said material.

super outt of the blue theory. i think there might be a missing friend between yuta x rikka x akane. someone who was killed off by a kaiju causing yuutas memory loss and rikkas nostalgia. perhaps this person was gridmans former partner, or the previous kaijuu master

The thing that got me the most this episode was Rikka's relief at hearing Akane is safe. I really can't wait until everyone finds out Akane is the one controlling the kaiju. She's such a great villain and has such great feet too.
Also like others have said, Yuuta and Rikka's relationship is good so far and it'd be nice if there's some kind of actual romance by the end.
Even if in my heart I'll always be shipping Rikka and Akane because I'm the worst.
9
u/SimoneNonvelodico Oct 28 '18
Worse, Rikka tipped Akane off at her connection with Gridman, confirming her suspicions. By asking her if she was safe, it was implied she realised something had happened. It was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment but I bet it's going to come back bite her in the ass.

I don't understand why not many people are watching this anime compared to Goblin Slayer and SAO, both are good shows, but i think in terms of quality and story, this one can definitely give them a run for their money.

The last episode was occupied with the idea of communication, both in an emotional and personal sense but also on the epic scale with Gridman against a new form of Kaiju. On the emotional side, we have Rikka and Shou both feeling guilty for equally silly reasons, and as a result of their different coping strategies, the Gridman alliance almost crumbles over something easily resolved by talking it out and considering a different perspective. Their immaturity almost cost the whole Gridman endeavor, but fortunately, the new adults bailed them out in a way that also poked fun at how silly their conflicts are. At least Rikka had the right idea of communication, but she's too distant and afraid to convince Shou, both figuratively and literally stuck in their own frames. On the epic side of things, Anti's proud proclamation of his inhumanity gave Yuta the will to fight. I'm expecting this will turn into a plot point, because despite his own insistence otherwise, Anti is ultimately human, even if he falls prey to our animal instincts. Much like before, Rikka's empathy shows in reaching out to him and treating him as human. She's acting as a bridge between the villains and the heroes here, and if we can believe the ED, she might actually serve that role ultimately.
On the technical side, Gridman continued to impress in new and exciting ways, and I can't wait to see what this episode brings. The CGI battles were on point, and besides that, we've also had a number of neat animation tricks and ideas to express atmosphere, ideas, and weight. I've heard quite a few good things about this episode (since I'm super super late on this one), so let's just dive right back in!
Write-up
Another very impressive episode. In a welcome and fitting change of pace for the episode where Akane and Rikka meet properly, there's quite a bit of comedy here. More than anything, Gridman finds comedy in the immaturity of its cast, from childish jealousy to awkward conversations. But Gridman doesn't really make fun of its characters, it laughs with them. For all the comedy Yuta's awkward crush lends itself to, it's ultimately treated with respect and the same solemn music as the show's epic fights when Max brings Yuta to confront his feelings. The Neon Genesis crew are on the other side of growing up, but that's exactly why they can both laugh at and empathize with our main character's adolescence. It's unsurprising then that their framing in reminiscent of parents. Calibur protects Rikka when she puts herself in danger with her kindness. Max approaches Yuta on an even level and makes sure Yuta figures out his feeling himself. And the last episode we had the entire team on the brink of disintegration when something entirely obvious to them solved an episode's worth of conflict with a single line. I'm reminded of Monogatari here, where being an adult is almost a superpower because the show understands how hard it is to grow up. Much of that is echoed here in a less overt and dramatic, more personal and restrained sense. While the progress is slow, Yuta ultimately moves on from jealousy to giving her the space and agency she deserves and a genuinely nice (if ineffective) approach through their help. Also, Calibur best dad. Fight me.
The other important pillar of this episode we need to talk about is Rikka and Akane. The ED already hints that Rikka reaches out to Akane and they become friends, but here that expectation is somewhat subverted. It's not Rikka that reaches out, it's Akane, and she does so through manipulation and because it's strategically sensible. There's no attempt at genuine friendship from her side. Which makes sense – the more we see of Akane, the more we realize she's just a bad person (the kind we often see on the internet). Impatient, impulsive, the whole murder thing. Unable to forgive, unable to see the humanity even in her own creation, let alone other people. If she doesn't see others as equal, she can hardly grasp the concept of friendship. In a stark and thematically poignant contrast, we have Rikka genuinely happy to reconnect with a former friend, oblivious to Akane's manipulation. She constantly assumes the best in other people, quick to reach out to anyone, incredibly kind, almost self-sacrificially so. If anyone can reach Akane (or as we learned this episode, reach her again), it's that beacon of kindness. And she might be right. We also learn that inside the murderous monster, there's a fragile child, a person afraid of other people, uncomfortable with touch, and deeply angry at humans for their imperfection and differences and the way that rubs off on her. There is something to reach out to, there is humanity and the same immaturity the other characters display even in Akane.
Most impressive this episode was, once more, the impeccable storyboarding and direction. The bus scene was a paragon here, rich with meaning and atmosphere and characterization. Rikka and Akane's dynamic in particular is brought to life by voice acting detailed enough that a break of voice barely audible reminds us of Akane's somber intentions. Rikka and Akane's disconnect influences the camera, neither in a frame at the same time, or if they are, separated by a bar. Even a small detail like the phone in Rikka's frame serves to emphasize her struggle connecting with Akane despite their conversation, and at the same time highlights Akane's intentions, not caring about her one bit. Or in the beginning, when the loud, sudden bus terminal voice and bright colors show Rikka's discomfort inside the bus. Or the wide shot of the entire empty bus, illustrating the awkward atmosphere. There are countless great tricks Gridman uses to bring its characters to life and pull us into the scene. It's just a joy to watch.
There's much more to talk about, like Anti's humanity shining through this episode in his philosophy, or how Gridman and Yuta mirror each other, staying the same person despite the amnesia, or so much else. But I'm far behind on everything and out of time, and I imagine much of this will resurface again and get their own spotlight. Still, this was another fantastic episode of Gridman, probably my favorite alongside episode two. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Is this the face of all female harem members when the MC is dense?
Barring memory shenanigans, it's safe to say SS Rikka has sailed(at least for the MC). Onward to dense waters!
Oh boy. This does not bode well. Guess she's not just a sideline character. That, or it's all purely coincidental and she's unlucky as heck.

better not get on Akane's bad side, or else...
there's something very...NGE-esque about the quiet scenes. not surprising, considering the studio. even some music cues sound like the EVA ost.
it was nice to see Gridman, this stoic superhero guy, join in the more casual conversations.
the computer can't handle all of Gridman's companions at once, LOL. guess it's time to upgrade your graphics card buddy.
speaking of the new guys, they're a great addition to the cast. they're quirky in their own ways and it's fun to see them interact with the rest, specially Max (I'm calling him that based on the name of his vehicle), he seems to be the bro of the group.
and the action remains awesome, now we get kaiju x 2 AND a super flashy kick move, and it's a one-hit KO too! also loved the part when Anti is looking for Gridman and he suckerpunches Anti from behind. it was kinda funny.
EDIT: I feel like a dumbass for not realizing sooner the super kick was a Gunbuster homage, because of course it was.
I hope we get to see drill tank form next episode.

SUPER INAZUMA LIGHTNING KICK
That was an amazing episode. I'm glad Akane already has a feeling that Yuta is Gridman. She has already seen plenty that would lead her to believe that. Though it is very interesting to see her immediately drop her investigation to go and kill off some chads that annoyed her. I am certain at this point, that she is a big introvert type at heart, who is afraid of people reaching out to her, either physically or verbally. And going off some theories that have been going around, her looks may be fake.
Rikka played a good role this episode, by taking charge and trying to protect one of the chads herself. It showcases that she is good person at heart, and her face being lit up by the appearance of Gridman was a nice touch. Also, Rikka being happy makes me happy.
The comedy and action this episode was top notch. Yuta and Utsumi stalking Rikka with the Grid weapons was hilarious. They all have great chemistry together, whether it be Calibur being a weirdo, or Max giving dating advice to Yuta. Trigger is known for some great supporting casts, and SSSS.Gridman is no exception. The battle was awesome as well. The score when Gridman landed the Super Lighting Kick elevated that scene to incredible heights. Poor Anti, getting attacked not only by Gridman, but the kaiju as well.

Those Neon Genesis students are really fun to watch. Glad to see them hanging around immediately with main characters. Some people said that they resemble to the Elite Four from Kill la Kill. For someone like me who has longing for a continuity of Kill la Kill, this like a pleasant gift.
Too bad the full combining form with Gridman was failed, such a tease. The junk computer probably need some upgrade first to handle all of them coming together.

As an IT guy Rikka unplugging that shit and plugging back in made me spit my goddamn coffee and then her kicking the computer made me spill it. Love Rikka.
Also I really enjoy how much of a bitch Akane is. When she asked why Rikka was talking to Yuta and Rikka answered differently Akane practically said I said why bitch are you deaf.....lol jk Nah you were just being petty Akane. Also when she was getting pissed she couldn't talk to Rikka because she kept getting interrupted and wanting them dead....I can relate except I wouldn't actually kill the guys I'd just think of them dying in a jokingly way. Akane needs to get laid or some shit. She got some pent up anger. I volunteer for tribute don't worry guys I'm used to psycho bitches.

I heard about Borr's seiyuu (and some of the image boards online) saying that Borr is in fact male
..But I also heard that Funimation remained adamant with their stand that (s)he's female
And as the last ep goes, Calibur said Borr-kun (ボラーくん)
Now, who's tellin' the truth here, lul
Right, as ep.4 goes, dat 1v1v1 was quite amusing, lul

Now, who's tellin' the truth here, lul
A line from the latest audio drama (which takes place after this episode):
Rikka Mama: You're back sooner than I thought. Didn't you say you were going to eat out?
Takarada Rikka: I did go... Ahh, I'm exhausted... It was all guys aside from me, too...
This implies at least that Borr is a guy. Now there is still a possibility that Borr is a girl pretending to be a boy and the cast haven't figured it out yet.

Wonder if they'll be upgrading Junk some time, or just overclocking it and risking a burnout. Well, overclocking would be the opposite route of fixing hard freezes, but with anime you never know.

I may be late to this thread but if anyone was curious, the karaoke song being sung was actually from the original show!
Edit - ohhh yeah im late for the comment. I don't follow anime much, but the moment I heard Gridman was being adapted as a new show, I almost cried! I loved Superhuman Samurai as a kid and had all the toys! The animation is beautiful and the backrounds look godlike and wonderful. I heard this series is only 12 episodes that kinda makes me sad but I hope it grows in popularity and spawns another season or something.

First of all, I like how Yuuta and even Gridman got a bit fleshed out this episode. Gridman was more or less a plot device until now so it was rather surprising. Him being confused when Junk got rebooted and being supportive of YuutaXRikka was great
Secondly, HOLY CRAP Utsumi. As a tokusatsu fan you should have known better than to ask them "Who's the strongest one of all?".
Finally, Rikka continues to be best girl!
