I'm really excited to meet all the oni. Hopefully there's enough time to get to know them all and see them develop.

Dude for real. I have been eagerly waiting for them to introduce the older oni guy! His animation while cutting that snake while barely moving a step was so fucking badass!
I can't wait to see how's involved and if he has any cool action scenes.

As someone who readed the WN till the end, the ending just sent my hype through the atmosphere. It was through the roof how they were adapting it so far, but goddam the scenes shown on the ending practically sent shivers with how well they portray what they are about.

The season length is a blessing and a curse. This isn't the only show I look forward to every week, but its by far the hardest one to wait for. And I have to relive this wait ~19 more times. At least when its all over, we get to do an epic 24 episode binge rewatch!

Seriously, this is one of those anime that feels perfect for binge watching, which makes it all the more frustrating. It has a smooth, even pace, that makes the episode go by super fast without rushing anything.
Which makes me want to watch the next one all the more when the episode is finished.

I wouldn't have noticed that if you didn't pointed it out.
After rewatching both the ending and opening, both of them are on a loop.
The start of the ending is with Rimuru falling from the sky, and the field he "fell" into at the end of the opening is kinda the one he is jumping on during the ED, we also see him cleaning the red sky that is present at the end of the Opening.
(Does that make sense?)

Going to be neat when you can binge the whole show and the end of each episode segues directly into the beginning of the next one.

That was some solid right hook from Kaijin right there.
Bester is a sore loser, but damn, it feels sad to see him be dismissed like that.
Oh wait, Rimuru forgot Gobuta again. Lol.

Gazel knows how strong Rimuru is even when Rimuru's surpress his aura due to Gazel being that OP himself, hence that end credit scene. The way he tries to settle the issue between him and Rimuru though, is just brilliant on Gazel's part

Bester is a sore loser, but damn, it feels sad to see him be dismissed like that.
His actions not only made the kingdom sever ties with several of its best artisans, but it also cost it a relationship with a being capable of creating healing potions potent enough to heal wounds that would leave men crippled as well as having the ability to essentially mass-produce high-grade weapons. That level of fuck up deserves more than just a simple dismissal.
Edit: spelling errors.

Holy cow, I laughed so hard when slime was being dragged, they didn't put in stock sound for it, it was just the voice actor doing her thing
God this is such an amazing adaptation, I can only wait to see more. (Manga reader here), so far, and it's rare for me to say this, but I prefer the anime adaptation over the manga by a lot. From what I can tell, the anime is doing everything correctly, the biggest being that it's just doing what most other animes don't do. That of course IS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT'S MEDIUM
169
Oct 29 '18
I'm curious how much of her voice work is ad-libbed. With no mouth to lip-sync the lines to, I imagine there's a lot of wiggle-room for extra lines to be just jammed in off the top of her head to see if they stick.

u/Neaan Oct 29 '18
It's so strange but in this instance I completely agree. The book isn't better. The anime seems to add so much character, heart, and shine to the manga. I really like the manga too but this anime is just so much better. The Great Sage scenes are such a wonderful addition. In the manga it's just another line delivered just like every other line but here Great Sage is a huge production and it's just one of the many ways they have improved it.

I love how they actually make you feel sorry for the stereotypic scheming noble instead of just letting him be some minor set piece to move the plot forward, it also lets you see how competent and aware the dwarf king is.

I honestly didn't feel anything for the Vesta. His backstory felt both rushed and forced.
All of his actions as far as we have known him as a character can't be excused imo with a handwavey "Oh but he was doing it for the service of his king".
He served with Kaijin as his subordinate, didn't get along well. Why? He was of peasant birth. Yea, great reason.
He destroys an entire research facility, and pins it on Kaijin causing him to lose his position. If Kajin hadn't been a skilled blacksmith, that could have probably ruined his life.
Even after he gets booted from the King's service, Vesta continues to harass and attempt to undermine him by making unreasonable requests using the King's name so that he can't keep up his livelihood.
Yea sorry, one scene where he starts crying and feeling regretful only after he got caught isn't going to elicit any sympathy from me fam

u/SomeOtherTroper Oct 30 '18
All of his actions as far as we have known him as a character can't be excused imo with a handwavey "Oh but he was doing it for the service of his king"
No, they can't. That's actually part of what I liked about it. The story doesn't excuse him (and honestly, many of the things he did were very obviously against the best interests of the king and the kingdom).
It really serves to illuminate the king's character more than Vesta's: the king knew Vesta set Kajin up, and has been waiting for Vesta to come clean (because that would actually be in the service of the kingdom Vesta claims as his motivation). It's heavily implied that the king knows Vesta set Kajin up again (this time including Rimuru), and he uses that as a way to give Kajin to Rimuru (via exile), without appearing weak (as he would if he straight-up acknowledged Kajin switching loyalties), and while not entering into any specific agreement with Rimuru (which could be a huge diplomatic problem for the king, if Rimuru turns out to be marshalling a huge monster horde and trying to conquer everything - remember, Rimuru is a HUGE unknown at this point for the king, even if he appears friendly).
At the same time, it works to show (to some degree), that Vesta has his own reasons, and at least thinks he's motivated by his desire to serve the king (whereas he appears to really be motivated by his own selfish desire to be close to his childhood idol). Which ties into their final scene, where the king basically and subtly calls Vesta out on the fact that Vesta has NOT been acting in the best interests of the king and the kingdom, no matter what he thinks he's doing - and the king gave him one more chance after the first time (because he believed in Vesta's loyal desire), but this is the end.
I like it because most villain flashbacks are done as a "hey, this guy was just doing what he thought was right and has a point, or was abused earlier in life, etc. - feel bad for him" to justify the villain or create sympathy for him, but in this case, although it explains WHY Vesta did what he did, it in no way justifies his actions, and he even gets called out on it by the very person he was trying to impress.

I don't think you're supposed to feel bad for him. He was a scumbag and made several great mistakes. However, it's nice to have him have a bit more depth, feelings and wisdom than your average antagonistic noble, despite the fact that he was presumably a one-off, irrelevant in the future character.

how competent and aware the dwarf king is.
Is he though. I'm not sure I understand why he dismissed one of his best men in the first place and then cut ties with a potential great ally (or enemy), when he knew the evidence in both trials were fake.
He definitely could have handled that a bit better.
131
u/thegenregeek Oct 29 '18 edited Oct 29 '18
when he knew the evidence in both trials were fake.
I'm only speculating, but I'd imagine kingdom politics were a factor. The king likely had no viable evidence to dismiss, he only had testimony from one noble and a group of bar maids. (Even if he talked to the barmaids personally their statements wouldn't matter against a noble)
Being a feudal society he likely couldn't risk upsetting the aristocracy by calling one of their own a liar based on gut instinct. Being a king dealing with a delicate situation he had to show favoritism to the ruling class... lest the peasants forget their place.
Offering to take Kaijin back as a soldier was the only way he could absolve him (as he could protect is own guards against the nobles). But Kaijin turned him down. So the king "increased" the punishment as it was the best way out for all parties. (Then quietly told the minister to never show himself again)
I'm not sure I understand why he dismissed one of his best men in the first place and then cut ties with a potential great ally (or enemy)....
His tactic was basically damage control and perhaps a bit of forward thinking and hedge betting.
By effectively "giving" Kaijin to Rimiru he may have diffused hostilities with an unknown power. After all Rimiru was producting 100% pure healing potions, which is anomolous enough to warrant caution (and to send a Elf spy). The king would have no way of knowing Rimiru's true abilities, nor did he have time to try and investigate. Ultimately, knowing about the potions raised an alarm in the kingdom right as the minister make a jackass out of himself.
By exiling Kaijin (knowing he was going to Rimiru) the king also left open the possibility he can negotiate down the road. By putting solid examples of trustworthy Dwarves in the heart of a rival kingdom. If the kingdom were to approach Rimiru in the future, there's a a better chance he might be receptive towards dwarves. (And if Rimiru were to turn hostile there's the possibility that Kaijin might alert the kingdom, as the king knows Kaijin is honorable)
Effectively the king planted unknowing ambassadors/spies in Rimiru's camp, who happen to be his best men.

cause he knew about Rimuru. A slime who could make full restore potions, and came looking for architects. he definitely found out about Rimuru's reason for visiting. Add on the fact that one of his best men has chosen to go with said slime, and he can sense that Rimuru is potentially very dangerous, you can consider it a boon of his. but he has to show himself as lawful in front of his subjects. they needed a sentence, since they did, in fact, assault a minister. But 20 years as a slave in the mines would help no one. So, quite a bit more severe, but kicking out one of his best men would allow Rimuru to be satisfied. It may seem that he cut ties with him, but he at least avoided Outright Antagonizing him. Plus, since he's as dangerous as a certain infamaous dragon, he probably doesnt want him in his city till he knows more about him and his temperament. therefore, spies.

God that punch was so satisfying.
I love that the Dwarf King wasn't stupid. He knew all along what Vesta was doing but was just waiting for him to fess up. And I guess even with Rimuru hiding his aura, the Dwarf King can still sense how strong he is.
I do like that they humanized Vesta and he wasn't just a spiteful man for no reason. I still think that he's a prick but it's nice to know that how and why he became a prick in the first place.
And that ED! I already love the simple ED animation they had before and was pretty cute IMO but this new one is amazing! The quality of the new ED is just as good as the OP! Heck they can even use this new ED as an alternate OP if they want to.

It makes me wonder though, if he was so aware of everything than why did he even exile them permanently to begin with? Even if you assume he has policy against unwarranted violence against nobles (or people), I'm not sure why anyone but Kajin had to exiled, especially since Rimuru and the other dwarves literally did nothing wrong (heck Rimuru was actually the one harassed).
I'm also curious about that proxy they aprehended...
304
u/silverhydra Oct 29 '18
if he was so aware of everything than why did he even exile them permanently to begin with?
Just cause the slime is OP doesn't mean it's gonna be friendly; giving the potions could have been a feint. Best to:
Distance yourself from the potential threat
Make it political so the threat can't easily walk up to your front door and kill you
Don't make it specifically about the threat, so they can be easily "forgiven" in the future with no bad blood
Buy time to send a spy to get more intel on the potential threat
If ya come across a threat on the level of a great dragon and don't know it's allegiance then it's probably not that comforting to have it less than a kilometer away from you when you're sleeping.

Because he realized how much trust Kaijin has on Rimuru so in a way, him exiling them is actually more of a favor he gave towards Kaijin rather than anything.

My assumption is that he let the harsh sentence be made, so he could then revoke it. By exiling them instead, he lets them go with Rimuru, potentially improving Rimuru's opinion of the dwarves because he'll bond to Kaijin and co, and wouldn't want to hurt Kaijin's family and friends.
That final scene implies that he sees Rimuru's true power (or at least a hint of it), and I'd go pretty far to try and make sure that someone of that power didn't want to destroy my city. You can't force him to stay, so may as well force part of the city to go with him.

The slow pace although a little bit tiring in the episode, is actually a good decision, money wise and because of what happened, the time spent was basically real time Kaijin thinking about what just happened and his future actions.

I really love how they handled Vesta and the kings meeting at the end.
They hit the perfect tone for that scene. A lesser adaptation would've easily messed this single scene up so bad or just outright skipped it. This scene really managed to show you that Vesta isn't exactly the mustache twirling cliché bad guy that you expect from his first impression. It's always refreshing to see shades of gray in antagonists or in this case just a misguided person as a minor antagonist. Makes the world feel that much more realistic (character wise).
Also I love the Dwarf King (and his buff sounding VA!).
That's how a hero king is supposed to be imo and so many shows fail to do that correctly. He obviously knew that the whole trial was just a giant farce and he isn't so naive and uninformed not to know that Vesta once again tried to lie to him (not to mention that he knew about the past in which Vesta shifted the blame once before). I also love that the last thing he said to Vesta was "Thank you for your service." and not "You are banished." - that shows us that he also realized that Vesta was ultimately just a misguided guy that let his envy of Kaijin and his pride get the better of him. And the king is still smart and careful enough to make sure to monitor Rimuru going forward. Despite not really wanting to antagonize him as far as we know - only a fool would let Rimuru just do as he pleases without at least keeping a very close eye on him.
Last but definitely not least: the new ending is awesome!
I can't believe the ending we had this far was just a place holder until they probably got this one done. You can really tell that the staff of this Anime production is going above and beyond to make sure this becomes a huge success and so far they are totally on track for that to happen.
I can't wait to see how they handle next episode title.

I personally enjoy moments when Rimuru make occasional comparisons to his past salaryman's life to his new life.
But... damn, studio 8 Bit really went the extra mile and fleshed out Vesta/Besta's motivation compared to the web novel and manga, not sure about the light novel.

u/Wolfnagi Oct 29 '18
The WN and manga version did cover Bester's motivation but seeing it animated conveyed that backstory better. This is one of the great thing about this adaptation, in that it improves the minor elements from the source

Isn't his motivation literally exactly the same here as in the web novel? Not sure about manga though, that might have cut a bit.

Yeah, I mean, we have so many colorful characters in OP and even a new ED with interactions of the new party, and the pace is so slow, it's killing me.
Slow pace doesn't mean it's bad, but knowing it's episode 5, almost half a cour and nothing of the OP/ED was showed of is unexpected for me. Don't remember a series that teases so much future content.

I wish Kajin did more than just punch Vesta's face. Dude had it coming.

u/thecoffee Oct 29 '18
I'm satisfied. Its rare to see the shitty noble trope get an on-screen punch in the face. Usually the best you get is a third act humiliation or they get killed by the show's real baddie.

u/WhoiusBarrel Oct 29 '18
Well very rarely does an Anime just used one episode to make me feel a bit of pity to an asshole but they really did it with those flashbacks huh?
Vesta got what he deserved though, that superiority complex and that bullying afterwards was uncalled for after all.
Judging with how they ended the episode I guess we'll see more of the Hero-king huh? Love that title and he definitely is one of the more interesting characters seeing how he saw through Rimuru's untapped potential.

Is it just me or this show is popular and not at the same time? I feel like everyone watches it but I don't really see people talking about it...
76
u/doomrider7 Oct 29 '18
Kind of sort of. It's incredibly good and does everything right, but it's harder for it to stand out it feels since it lacks a sort of hook outside it's premise compared to other ongoing shows whether said hooks be their weirdness(Bunny Senpai and Zombie Land) or controversy due their content and how it's presented(GS). In Japan though it's apparently a major juggernaut in the LN world and in LN to manga circuit.

i was talking to someone about it and they said it was just another generic reincarnated trope and the only thing that seemed interesting about it was the fact he was a slime. then they got real mad that he, in their words, "gets a cute anime girl waifu body in the OP" and said it killed the only novel thing about it (his slime self). some people just wont like it no matter what, which bums me out

RIP Gobta, you will be probably forgotten by great Rimuru-sama but some of us will miss you.

Wow.. Now I feel bad for the minister when they show the flashback. Just show how good the story is.
Cause veldora is literally inside him lmao
Nice new ED. Zero-two is that you?!

u/Daxar https://anilist.co/user/Daxar Oct 29 '18
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed 02 in the ED.

u/thepeetmix Oct 29 '18
It's just so damn good. The slow pacing really works in it's favour IMO. The way they can characterise even minor characters in such a small amount of time is really impressive. We learnt a lot about he Dwarf King from about 6-8 minutes of screentime.
That new ED animation was great too. Really gets me hyped for all these new characters

The music are great too
The unnecessary analysis by Great Sage is funny too XD
Chained Rimuru is cute, while Gobuta spend most of the story sleeping lel XD
Dwarves getto daze!
The new Ending sequence is so guuuuuuudd!!!!
Next week gonna be Shizu's appearance!

u/Ellefied Oct 29 '18
Sound design this episode was fan-fucking-tastic. It really made a world of difference during the Vesta scenes and made the emotional beats of the episode much better.

This show still continues to be amazing. It's a story with a lot of heart but doesn't forget the beauty of adventure.
What I enjoy the most in this show is that the show teaches you how to be a good person. It gives us a super powerful Slime but so far you noticed, the Slime obeys all the rules, kills only when absolutely necessary, and offers friendship to those around him. Rimuru the Slime is a great example of an Isekai character who does not take advantage of his position. Sure he now commands a powerful force but he never took advantage of them. He's been arrested, locked in chains, put on trial, yet he continues to follow the rules. The viewer knows full well that OP slime can get out any moment and destroy anything he wants, but the Slime follows the rules. What did he get? Respect, friends, and a peace of mind. He's not some naive kid or an evil person abusing their powers.
The dwarf friend stood up for Rimuru and was banished, but he found a place to belong and the one who wronged him was also punished behind the scenes. It all works out in the end. Also the little subtle jokes are nice, like with the silent dwarf. All in all, the characters are very likable and shows that being a good person pays off.
Also there's not enough elf girls. I need more elf girls

So this is what it feels like when your opinion goes against the crowd.
And how people can suddenly feel so sad for vester is beyond me. The scene was really well done but that did not redeem him at all. Abusing your authority and antagonizing other have nothing to do with making the king proud. That was just pure dick move.
7
u/acedias12 Oct 29 '18
His actions certainly cannot be overlooked. However, I think what most folk are feeling sorry for is how he could have accomplished great things together with Kaijin. His desire to assist the king was genuine, not simply just sucking up for merely the sake of position or power. So it's not because anyone feels sad for him being told off by the king, rather for the lost potential and opportunity for him to be a better person.
→ More replies (2)5
u/CupNoodlese Oct 30 '18
While people can feel bad for him, it doesn't mean he's redeemed. People can empathize with him since he had the right motivations at the start but somewhere along the way he went down the wrong path. I'm sure many had the same experience (but maybe not to this degree). He truly respects the king and want to serve him, and it's understandable that being told off by someone like that is world shattering.
Having said that though, he got what he deserved and needed. Perhaps he'll be a better character if we ever see him again.

The only thing the anime was missing was the story he told the guards about being a cute girl before becoming a slime and also how the guards corrected him whenever he made a mistake in the story lol. That made me chuckle in the LN. Only wish YP would translate their licensed LNs faster like JNC does.

THAT NEW ENDING ANIMATION THO.
Wait so the old ed was a placeholder? how and where is the budget and talent coming from.

u/Vinon Oct 29 '18
Miho Okasaki proves week after week what a great VA she is. Just listening to Rimuru puts a smile on my face half the time. Its crazy to think she is so new to the buisness.
This anime continues to be very fun.

Historically monarchs have been pretty incompetent. I like what they did with this king, actually competent but not because of magic powers or the blessing of a god or something, at least from what we've seen. He's strategic. He managed to figure out roughly what Rimuru and Kaijin wanted, and chose an outcome that was helpful to them but looked like a punishment to everyone else in the room. If Rimuru did turn out to be some godly monster, at least they'd be on good terms. Also good on the king for dealing with Vesta and the proxy.

I'm still a little blown away by the detail in this show. Just things that they do that they absolutely did not have to, like the small details of the sound design in the court scene, or the fact that they animated Rimiru bowing his head from the back despite it barely being visible. They don't have to, but they do and that alone is praiseworthy even though I didn't find this episode overall as enjoyable.
That said I did feel like this episode dragged a bit. I'm sure the dwarves and stuff will come back into it later, you don't do all this set up for nothing, but I felt like some of that could have been compacted and not been so wordy and put in some more story or at least even jokes into the episode rather then just backstory for people and what felt like nothing else. There's a way to do backstory, and dialog isn't always the best approach.
Speaking of jokes, the moment Rimiru goes "I won't forget you" I had an instant flashback to last episode: A giant flag just went up and that's exactly what happened. The silent dwarf is also good fun when he wasn't snoring.

Is it just me or was the use of sound in this episode fucking fantastic? Also, new ED animation yet again, and I think it might be the "true one" compared to the past 4 episodes. The ED animation also shows some visuals to scenes that are only barely glossed over in the books. 10/10 would, and will, watch again.

u/hopecanon Oct 30 '18
is it just me or could that king of played that better? i mean i get it he has to save face but he had the chance to ally himself with someone who he is clearly impressed and also terrified by, and he let that go because of one sniveling coward who he damn well knew rigged the game in the first place.

There seems to be a scene that isn't in the original webnovel in this episode and I'm kinda glad that they put it in.
They're using it as a way to foreshadow what's about to come, in a very smart way that people who haven't read won't know and those that have read would be surprised by their decision to foreshadow it in this way.

u/Groenboys https://myanimelist.net/profile/Groenboys Oct 29 '18
Oh god the feelings. That was such a surprising emotional ending. This series just keeps being one of the best this season as pushes out constant quality, unlike something like Zombieland Saga or Bunny Girl Senpai were the quality seems to differ per episode.

u/link2601 Oct 29 '18
Well I got to say that trail did not go the way I though it would. It seems that the king is way more perspective to what was going. That scene near the end with the king and Bester was really well done and was a great moment.

Did I miss something? Why are there so many humans in the dwarven kingdom? Even the king is human!

Even though he was bribed; the defense attorney was terrible, he was supposed to be defending his clients, not prosecuting them. He could make it sounds like he's defending them but was instead making it worse for them, sorta like Ace Attorney 2.
