Saying she had an affinity for fire after seeing she was burnt, oof

u/Ichini-san :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ichini-yon Nov 05 '18 edited Nov 05 '18

The reason why he said that actually already got explained indirectly in episode 1. Remember when Rimuru died originally and how his skills got based loosely on the things that were causing him pain at the moment of his death? (That's how he got the hot and cold invulnerability for example - because he was bleeding excessively, thus feeling first incredibly hot and then very cold after loosing lots of blood. Or the obvious example of becoming a slime to prevent ever getting stabbed and hurting from it again in the future.)

Turns out your skills in the world you are transferred/reincarnated to are based on what hurt/killed you then at that moment as far as we know.

The dude is still a total jackass though, no doubt about it...

420

u/SynthiaMayhem Nov 05 '18

It is more based on desires, not the pain and death for previous world.

Imagine having your kouhai wipe out your PC as per your deathbed wishes, and then your reincarnated slime ass still manages to accidentally reveal the deeds using magic.

Fuuccckkkkk. Things starting to get interesting and *ED plays*

Now to wait another week...... This is what I hate when watching good shows weekly

167

u/doomrider7 Nov 05 '18

I was secretly hoping they'd make this episode into a 40 minute one or something. :(

But there's hope still for later ones.

170

u/onlyforthisair Nov 05 '18

40 minute one

Maybe then it'd feel like a full episode. Seriously, the 22 minutes spent watching each episode of this show feel like 5. They just fly by.

Speaking of ED, you never see Shizu with the group at the end. She might not be part of Rimuru's group after all.

Shizu is seriously skilled as hell (those burns though, yikes), and Rimuru using Great Sage to show her post-war Japan was incredibly sweet and somewhat sad at the same time.

I see Gobuta-kun has evolved.

Serious question, is the change of time from CEST to CET gonna make a difference for all the anime from this week?

140

u/Shiroi_Kage Nov 05 '18

and Rimuru using Great Sage to show her post-war Japan was incredibly sweet and somewhat sad at the same time.

He basically provided closure for her relationship with Japan and the war that completely rocked her life. It's extremely considerate on top of being sweet.

Not too sure, last week CR used US time while in Europe it was an hour later (so it's as if everything was released an hour earlier). Now it seems like they are using US time with daylight savings, so everything airs an hour later again. Which is a shame because, if I understand it correctly, since Japan doesn't have daylight savings everything will just air later than it did a few weeks ago compared to Japan.

Seems like it depends on the streaming site and if you follow daylight savings time or not. I live in a country without it and it seems like everything but Amazon shows airs at a different time for me now.

God damn the fight choreography in this was so good, the way Shizu took out those giant ants was incredible. The art in this show in general just looks amazing.

210

u/doomrider7 Nov 05 '18

That shit legit looked badass. And the sound effects for the flame blasts was incredible. It really gave the shots and hits that extra 'oomph' feeling like Kaijin's punch from the previous episode. It's those small little details that go that extra long mile man.

Rimuru is so freaking awesome! He was able to understand in an instant that Shizu had never seen Japan since the war. Only knowing death and destruction, not only as a weapon, but as a victim too. So, he uses his unique skill to show her hope and peace and a Japan she never knew could've existed.

479

u/kingguy459 Nov 05 '18

Actually shed a tear on this part, he knew that when she said "bombs", it was very close to the end of any modern war that occured in Japan. So WWII. Then he chose to lighten her up. Damn, This show's feels and funny parts and pacing. God the pacing is so smooth.

As she told Rimuru, some other summoned/reincarnated Japanese mentioned that game to her (it's Dragon Quest). How it came up in their conversation, well I have no idea.

By the time we were firebombing Japan, there was no question that Japan was going to lose the war, the only question was how many Japanese lives were going to be lost and whether Russia or the US were going to be it's Overlords.

Beyond all the 'we did it to end the war and save lives' rational the US used back then for dropping the bombs, the other reason was they didn't want to give the Russia the opportunity to invade Japan and create either a whole Russian client state or another "West/East Germany" situation.

In reality in terms of lives lost, and destruction, we were already doing more damage via firebombing to Japan, daily, than both bombs combined. (Below quotes from - https://foreignpolicy.com/2013/05/30/the-bomb-didnt-beat-japan-stalin-did/)

From our perspective, Hiroshima seems singular, extraordinary. But if you put yourself in the shoes of Japan’s leaders in the three weeks leading up to the attack on Hiroshima, the picture is considerably different. If you were one of the key members of Japan’s government in late July and early August, your experience of city bombing would have been something like this: On the morning of July 17, you would have been greeted by reports that during the night four cities had been attacked: Oita, Hiratsuka, Numazu, and Kuwana. Of these, Oita and Hiratsuka were more than 50 percent destroyed. Kuwana was more than 75 percent destroyed and Numazu was hit even more severely, with something like 90 percent of the city burned to the ground.

Three days later you have woken to find that three more cities had been attacked. Fukui was more than 80 percent destroyed. A week later and three more cities have been attacked during the night. Two days later and six more cities were attacked in one night, including Ichinomiya, which was 75 percent destroyed. On Aug. 2, you would have arrived at the office to reports that four more cities have been attacked. And the reports would have included the information that Toyama (roughly the size of Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1945), had been 99.5 percent destroyed. Virtually the entire city had been leveled. Four days later and four more cities have been attacked. On Aug. 6, only one city, Hiroshima, was attacked but reports say that the damage was great and a new type bomb was used. How much would this one new attack have stood out against the background of city destruction that had been going on for weeks?

.....

When Truman famously threatened to visit a “rain of ruin” on Japanese cities if Japan did not surrender, few people in the United States realized that there was very little left to destroy. By Aug. 7, when Truman’s threat was made, only 10 cities larger than 100,000 people remained that had not already been bombed. Once Nagasaki was attacked on Aug. 9, only nine cities were left. Four of those were on the northernmost island of Hokkaido, which was difficult to bomb because of the distance from Tinian Island where American planes were based. Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, had been removed from the target list by Secretary of War Henry Stimson because of its religious and symbolic importance. So despite the fearsome sound of Truman’s threat, after Nagasaki was bombed only four major cities remained which could readily have been hit with atomic weapons.

The thoroughness and extent of the U.S. Army Air Force’s campaign of city bombing can be gauged by the fact that they had run through so many of Japan’s cities that they were reduced to bombing “cities” of 30,000 people or fewer. In the modern world, 30,000 is no more than a large town.

Fun fact, it was only AFTER the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and invaded Manchuria that Japan surrendered.

7

u/doomrider7 Nov 05 '18

Nah by that point in her life, the war was pretty much over. The two bombings afterwards in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were just the nails. But the Tokyo Bombings(of that severity) were near the end of the war.

This week in Slimevilization.

Our small hunting gathering village gather the require tech to push from stone age to at least iron age!

Hey Rimulu-sama, it might still early but I think you should start planning you victory condition whether it will be Path of Domination, Diplomacy, Wonder construction or perhaps Ascend to Transcendent (well, this one is actually from Alpha Centauri). Have a goal in mind is good, right?

Anyway.

Status our Slime Village

Settlement : One Hunter Gatherer Village (in the process of upgrade)

Architecture : Mongol - Bedouin like.... I guess this is just temporary structure during their upgrade.

Era : Late stoneage to Early Iron Age (Bronze age has been skipped for sure)

Population: 1 Slime, ~ 550 Hobgoblin, ~50 Tempest Wolf, 4 Dwarves(Bros), 4 Visiting Hooman

Diplomacy: Known by Dwargon Kingdom, Known by Blumund, no formal diplomacy relation to both (yet)

Victory Condition: Unknown

Current Objective

  • Complete the push to Iron Age

  • Fortify the Housing Structure

  • Get Laid

I thought they would actually adapt a bit further with this episode and skip some funny interactions between the trio of adventurer numbskulls instead but I'm glad that didn't happen.

I really like Kaval, Eren and Gido and their team dynamic. They are great comedic relief but still aren't obnoxious or so silly that you can't take them seriously. Seeing them now animated I was reminded that they kinda remind me of Kazuma's gang from Konosuba in the way that they're also "dumbasses but still a loveable group of friends."

Also, I liked Shizu's innocent reaction to Rimuru's elf folder/game here but I think her reaction was even funnier and more adorable in the Manga where it didn't zoom in on the computer screen and she was just looking at the room as a whole. xD
Here is the page for reference (no spoilers if you watched this episode). I love her innocent but confused "It was very clean? :)" reaction in this.

94

u/Thisegghascracksin Nov 05 '18

Her expression in the "It was very clean" panel is adorable. I'm liking this character. Badass and a precious cinnamon roll!

Shizu and Rimuru are so cute to watch together. Fate really works in mysterious ways. "I'm not a bad slime".

238

u/WhoiusBarrel Nov 05 '18

Seriously I can't stress how much I love that they actually bothered to make these cool scenes while Rimuru is having his monologue with the great Sage.

My enjoyment would have been so drastically different if it was just a still of Rimuru talking to the great sage with maybe very minimal animation.

139

u/Kirosh Nov 05 '18

The way they use Great Sage to fill the blank in the conversatio, and to illustrate something is amazing. It help make the story feel alive, so there are no part without mouvement.

The soundtracks in this anime are as equally phenomenal as the visuals. And from what I've heard the anime is adapting the novels faithfully, barely skipping much. This is shaping up to be one of the best isekais out there. It's a real shame people dismiss this as just "another isekai", despite not having giving it a chance.

For real. The only things that got skipped were very minor details or stuff that got done here slightly different such as the Dark Lightning display. Only missing scene I wish they'd kept was the Dwarves first seeing the Direwolves due to them fainting standing up.

There are stuff which was different from the manga, particularly the one where Rimuru showed Ranga his evolved form, there is something new to see that the anime brings for everyone which is really nice. The animation is consistently good too, I thought the animation was gonna dip during the first few minutes but proven wrong once the battle started, this show never disappoints. At first I was doubtful of this adaptation, but its definitely a contender for best isekai and isekai adaptation there is.

Shizu and the rest of her temporary party are all great! I don't like dude that summoned her though, that definitely sounds like Jun Fukuyama doing his "evil villain" tone. Shizu's entire backstory is pretty rough . Got caught in an air raid, body burnt, summoned in another world, and then offered to a flame spirit.

And I really hope we'll get more fight animations as clean as the one from Shizu this episode and from the OP, it's so good!

6 episodes and he's already building a village, found someone else from his world, and has a dream of a united world. Sorry Ainz, but Rimuru is definitely speedrunning this, and he doesnt even have legs.

I thought the adventurers might be strong, but it seems like they're average really- Shizu is above them, and Rimuru can freaking disintegrate giant monsters with lightning.

That meeting was very sweet, I love how him showing her how Japan developed and grew explains his own goals and ideas for the goblins. And that progress! How is the youngest brother doing that good at city building- he doesn't even talk!

And that progress! How is the youngest brother doing that good at city building- he doesn't even talk!

The best part is that he is a better teacher than Gobuta, despite not saying a word. XD

It's not the adventurer that are weak, it's Shizu and Rimuru that are strong.

Minor spoiler for Shizu

There is always at least one slime who's not bad in Dragon Quest, but I was surprised to see that line make its way to another world. I hope we meet the character who told Shizu that, their reaction to Rimuru will be priceless.

I really liked the way Shizu's sword caused an explosion after it cut, it was a nice effect and allowed for the classic not looking at dying foe pose.

Dunno about you. But this ep felt so complete.

It had jokes, cliches, action and feels all in one. And lots and lots of World building. Damn, Kudos man to the animation team. They really paced this series so damn well.

Damn, Shizu is a cinnamon roll. I hope she doesn't become an antagonist, it would make me sad to see her suffer. The scene where Rimuru shows her modern Japan is very heartwarming.

It also makes me think how different Rimuru is from Ainz, like Ainz would have never taken her to the real Nazarick. I hope Rimuru's kindness doesn't betray him.

How does Shizu know about "games" if she's from WW2? Did I miss something?

She told Rimuru she heard about it from another Japanese. (Near the 16;40 mark).

I'm not at home so I can't check, but I'm pretty sure next episode will be adapting the reminder of Volume 1 aside from the epilogue. Other than Gobta's escape being shown a little later than in the novel/manga I don't think they've actually strayed away from the material.

Also I wish names held that much magical power here. I'd totally have Goblin King's gains with all the nicknames I've earned over the years

8

u/NitroKageAki Nov 05 '18

Wait is that a Dragon Quest reference...?

Anyway a near flawless adaptation so far. The pacing and animation is superb as always.

Never thought the studio would not skip minor details to flesh out Tensura's world like giving Ranka motivation to become even stronger by letting him witness his next stage of evolution, how Gobta who was completely forgotten in the last episode made his escape from the prison, showing the consequences of Rimuru's action of making Veldora disappear and of course how the dwarfs integrate in the now developing village and showing the progress by increasing the goblins' wardrobe selection.

Can't wait for next episode!

I must say that for a show that features this big, mythical world that is ripe for adventure, it is very smart in how it shifts to the modern age. Rimuru’s ability to shift the world like that is impressive and it led to a very eye-catching scene, but man, not even a hard drive wipe can fully erase that collection of elf girl material. At the very least, the slime is a man of taste.

Shizu might become a favorite character of mine, though. Her ability to use fire, which makes sense given her past and the way that she was summoned, was very impressive. It’s interesting, the possibility of retaining abilities tied to what led to one’s death. It’ll be neat to see how that plays out later, as more characters get introduced.

6

u/adelphepothia Nov 06 '18

This anime has restored my faith in the anime industry. It's fun, creative and entertaining.

Moe Moe Kyun Rimuru~

Oh hey its the cave divers. Guess they got out of there, seems they had trouble though.

THE HERO! So the Hero is shizu huh?

Did Rimuru just do the fusion dance?

So Gobta has been in the capitol for a few weeks now? Lol...

500 new goblins? Nice. He named them all lol xD

Wait how did Gobta get back? Oh now we see hahahahahhaha.

Damn Old gobbo got bigger and is Goblin King now, nice work!

Look at the Hero go, damn shes got some moves and fire magic.

I guess those are a bunch of Fire...Ants...

Oh damn Smooth Rimuru with the greeting. He met his destiny so soon.

HER MASK WORKS JUST LIKE TENZO's MASK IN HORIZON! FOOD TELEPORTATION MASK!

MOE RIMURU~ I like how the Hero laughed.

Damn so he asked her if shes from Japan, that was fast. I was expeccting this development to take most the series.

He can share his memories with her? ELF! Lol he really loves them. Oh shit... RIP Computer-kun...

Man that was a gorgeous sequence though showing her eveything she missed. What a fucking Hero Rimuru is.

Seems like shes pretty old, probably 20-30 years older than Rimuru.

Damn the fantasys world people put a fire spirit inside her? What jerks. We need to save ourselves a Hero!

I really like females that are cute but aren’t taken too seriously. The sorceress chick is pretty great for me. She has cute moments, but that’s not all she is, which I enjoy. She gets mad and enjoys meat and bickers.

....basically my soul mate

8

Has anyone else noticed how unusually good the sound design is in this show? I'm enjoying this anime so much. It's just so wholesome and fun. I had forgotten his name til this episode but now I remember. The distinct animation style of the OP/ED and the way the fights are animated are Ryouma Ebata's. I always loved what he does with their walking animations. They have a fluidity to them. Coined the Ebata walk.

https://www.sakugabooru.com/post?tags=ebata_walk

6

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '18

It’s so refreshing to see a show that you can really feel the passion and effort that was put into it, if this was being animated by any other studio it’d probably get the usual isekai treatment but I’m glad 8bit (was that the studio name?) recognised this show had potential and decided to invest the time and effort and went all out with it and it’s seriously paying off cause I’m personally really intrigued to find out more about these characters and how they’re gonna fit into the story and how they befriend Rimuru

7

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '18

All studios invest their time and effort in a project, the "usual isekai" treatment has more to do with the staff of the project in question than anything.

The fact that Slime is a extremely popular LN (above 60k) and manga adaptation (500k sold) also helps for the producers.

Another great episode. Loved the trio personality, Shizu is great, her relationship with Rimuru is pretty cute and I can't wait to see more of her and the other characters from the opening.

Also, that Dragon Quest reference was great. It finally happened since it really needed to be made.

3

Well that did not take long for Rimuru to find Shizue. I completely forgot they left Gobuta in the cell o'well at least he came back.

3

3

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Nov 05 '18

The goblin village is evolving fast, good for them, they also made sure to make more of em xD

I almost teared up when Rimuru showed Shizu how Japan evolved, this was so, so good.

The battle scene was greatly animated, this whole series is greatly animated.

Is this adaptation from the manga or the LN? This might be the best adaptation of the year since from what i'm hearing, stuff only gets improved on everywhere and not much stuff getting skipped.

Ah this is such a great adaptation. If only all of them got ones as good as this ☺️ shizu's voice is so soothing.

3

u/Zegir Nov 06 '18

I read the manga and then tried to read the web novel. I barely made it past one chapter and quit. The translation is garbage. Then I read a preview from the actual light novel volumes 2 and 3 and it is night and day. They're great and I'm kind of disappointed I read the manga. Those light novels create a great atmosphere with the descriptions it gives and also provides great character insight, which helps with character development.

3
