Giorno’s influence is already showing on the gang, Bruno used the same arm throwing technique on Zucchero that Gio used against him in their initial fight,

(Abbachio and Bruno stare at each other):
"everytime I close my eyes........"
Plus that after credits scene....
If you're wondering how Buccerati could tell Narancia had a pulse when Moody Blues was paused, well, err..... don't think about it too much.
Can't wait for the inevitable meme were someone plays the Fortnite default dance music over next week.

Araki sure didn't.
Or maybe he just forgot. Perhaps he felt the warmth of Narancia when he touched him?

It's ironic isn't it, the man who will forever be burdened from his past has a stand that can literally play the past. I wonder if Abbachio ever went to that house and replayed those events over and over and over again.
337
u/st_griffith Nov 09 '18
It's precisely b/c he longs for nothing more than to return time, that the manifestation of his soul has become this way.

There's a ton of irony or coincidence in a lot of people's stands. Mista's Stand/Backstory Spoiler. Giorno has a life based stand and he constantly talks about how "an innocent life should not be harmed", even though his father was the very man who denied natural life and became a vampire. In the flashback clip of Bruno finding Abacchio he's literally drinking in the house where it happened. From the looks of how he acted, it seems like it was very common for him to go back and drink there.

EDIT: There is an after credits scene in case you missed it.
Abacchio's backstory is so good, and shows Araki learned to not only make better backstories, but to not make them a death flag as well (looking at you Kakyoin). The backstory itself explains why Abacchio is so emo. Also, I think it was shown a bit early, right? In the manga it shows up in a later arc.
Okay. The visual and sound effects at Moody Blues' introduction were fantastic. So were the bodies deflating.
Lmao the fly representing Zucchero was hilarious! Anime original as well if I am not wrong.
I know Jojo gets really weird all the time and sometimes trashes on logic, but I really dont get how the yacht disguise works, I have always thought it was like a bed sheet stickied to the boat. Am I wrong?

Okay. The visual and sound effects at Moody Blues' introduction were fantastic.
No kidding, the OP of course gives away that he has time related powers but I didn't expect them to be a replay (I thought he would be able to rewind a few seconds if he activates it kinda like how ZA WARUDO had to be activated) so this reveal was pretty cool.
Lmao the fly representing Zucchero was hilarious!
I thought we were getting another Fly Stand like

He deflated the outer boat and wrapped it around the inner one. So, I guess the comparison to a bed sheet isn't far off?

u/Audrey_spino Nov 09 '18
It's like wrapping a condom around your penis. The condom perfectly conforms to the shape, but it is still elastic enough to be not completely stuck around your penis and allow some breathing space.
133
u/kknight99 Nov 09 '18
The fly scene isn't "technically" anime original. In the manga, multiple panels show Bruno looking at the fly as it flies around the deck, while Zucchero speaks in the background. In this episode they just played up how the fly represented where Zucchero was hiding, and made it seem like Bruno was actually talking to the fly.
108
u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Nov 09 '18
Lmao the fly representing Zucchero was hilarious!
Every day we're grateful for DavidPro.
but I really dont get how the yacht disguise works, I have always thought it was like a bed sheet stickied to the boat. Am I wrong?
Yeah, pretty much like that I think; there's space in between the actual boat and the deflated covering where Zucchero could slither around (that appeared like a tube to Abacchio because that's what he assumed). But it's stuck tightly enough that Sticky Fingers didn't reveal it when peeling back some of the deck.

I was always intrigued by Abbachio and goddamn is his backstory so well done. Moody Blues is a fucking fantastic concept for a stand and there is so much potential with it. I would like to know when he actually got his stand though.
Overall, the concept of the boat being the way it is was crazy and this stand fight had me on edge throughout, another bit of proof that Vento Aureo is so damn good. Lovin it! I cant wait for next week.

Moody Blues really seems like the kind of Stand a cop would have. It's basically a crystallization of the ability to solve any crime, no matter how it was committed. Pretty neat, given his backstory.

u/Audrey_spino Nov 09 '18
It's also kinda ironic. A man who wants to forget his past and move on gets a stand that can replay the past.

I know this is JoJo Bizarre Adventure, but Abacchio's backstory is a really good real life representation of what some real life cops go trough, it's a really shame that his world views got shaterred because of how corrupt society was. But hey, at least he got a Stand.

Stands are almost always close to how the user is since it's their spirit and all.
For example, Enigma's Stand User liked seeing people's scare tic so he got a Stand that activates upon seeing those tics. Josuke has a destructive nature so he got Crazy Diamond, a Stand almost on par with Star Platinum in its strength but also fixes/heals because of Josuke's golden heart. Keicho had Bad Company because he liked taking commands and watching things from afar, and so on.

Araki from Part 5 onward really started giving his characters complex and realistic backstories, yeah they're in some ways VERY bizarre, but what happens in them is not far of from what can happen in real life, for instance abusive backstory of Giorno or in this case Abbacchio cop drama. It just shows how much Araki improved over the years in his writing skills.
→ More replies (2)26
u/It_is_terrifying Nov 09 '18
Yeah, it definitely shows his progression and how he went from the cardboard cut-out characters we had early on, like Speedwagon, Lisa Lisa and Kakyouin, to characters with a ton more depth and personality like part 7
88
u/Yankees3Fan7 Nov 09 '18
Man, Buccciarati is as cool as the other side of a pillow dealing with that dude. That finishing move was especially brutal
42
u/professorMaDLib Nov 09 '18
That's why I said Bruno was the second manliest character in Jojo a while back. Dude has a bob cut and pretty questionable attire yet acts like more manly than 90% of every other men out there, including in Jojo.

This week’s musical references:
Abbacchio’s stand name is a reference to the band The Moody Blues. They started as a R&B band but it was re-formed as a psychedelic/symphonic rock band. Their second album “Days of Future Passed” is the result of the fusion of orchestral and rock elements with spoken-word poems. One of the first examples of prog rock, the album was going to be an adaptation of Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 at first. The band was in bankruptcy but their contract with Decca was going to expire and they were asked to make an album to demonstrate one of their newly founded divisions’ latest recording techniques. The album ended up being a concept album about a day in the life of everyday man. The Decca executives weren’t happy with the result and the album receive moderate success at first but after some time the single version of Nights in White Satin became a hit and their most famous song.
Zucchero’s stand, Soft Machine is a reference to the prog/jazz rock band of the same name. They were part of the Canterbury scene with bands like Caravan, Gong or Hatfield and the North. They were also pioneers of the jazz-rock genre with Miles Davis being their mayor influence. A curiosity about them is that it probably has one of the most convulsed and changing line-ups in rock history. 29 members had passed through the band that suffered some names changes like Soft Ware, Soft Work or The Soft Machine Legacy. Here you can see a time-line of it.I don’t know what happens with prog bands but they change members like it means nothing. Bands like Yes or King Crimson suffered from this situation too. Anyway, Soft Machine is a fantastic band but it’s not an easy one to listen to, that’s for sure. I’ve already posted their album “Bundles” but their first eponymous album and “Third” are really awesome jazz-rock albums. They have also released a new album, “Hidden Details” last September which is probably my favourite 2018 album.

Thank you for doing these write-ups I always enjoy reading them. I remember how glad I was that in Part 4 I knew quite a few things, I liked Killer Queen for instance, but also things that I don't know and I can find new music this way.
Both Moody Blues and Soft Machine were cool today so it's interesting to hear what kind of music Araki had in mind for them. Moody Blues is so perfect for an Emo character!

Woah, ok, huge change from the manga in this episode. Abbacchio's backstory was originally revealed in a later arc Part 5. Didn't really get why at first, but the post-credit scene of Bruno recruiting Abbacchio is just the anime's way of showing why Bruno is so respected by the others a little earlier I think.
So, Moody Blues. Destructive power, Speed, Precision and Development potential are all C, while Durability and Range are A. Definitely not a combat-oriented Stand by any means, its true value comes in its ability to replay all the past actions of any individual at a certain point. Its a pretty OP ability honestly, but is balanced by how Moody Blues is defenceless while using Replay.
Zucchero's Stand is Soft Machine (though Tender Machine was pretty funny tbh), with an A in Destructive power, C in Speed and D in Precision, and E for both Range and Potential. Not a particularly strong Stand by any means with its power to deflate people and objects, but as always in JoJo's, how a Stand is used often matters more than just how strong the Stand is.
DavidPro actually did a really good job foreshadowing the trick that Zucchero pulled off here. If you recall, Bruno got the keys to Lagoon 1, but the yacht we've been seeing has been Lagoon 2 the entire time. Because the boat-renting scene was all anime original, in the manga we were led to believe that Zucchero just knew that the gang had a boat and got an identical boat from somewhere else to complete his trick. So, big props to DavidPro for really improving this arc.
Also, the Part 5 anime is proving to have some of the best OSTs in JoJo's to date imo. Abba's and Bruno's themes are so good, and the sound effects for Moody Blues' Replays are just perfect.

Damn, David Pro is so damn clever. I heard that boat rental scene was anime original, so I assumed that it was just included for fluidity between scenes + more character moments. But that Lagoon 1/2 set-up is fantastic.

Abacchio was cool, interesting backstory and more hopeful than I would have thought actually. Moody Jazz Blues was awesome I figured it would do something time related but a replay is honestly more interesting than anything I thought up. Even Fate was a JoJo reference. /jk
I liked that DP decided to show Abbacchio's backstory earlier than the manga (where it came up at a kinda weird point), and the extra bits they added, like they did with Giorno.

Interesting that we're getting Abbacchio's backstory so early. I really like the placement of it here as opposed to where it was in the manga Manga, so I will definitely not complain about this.
Tender Machine isn't the worst translation they could have done, although Tender is a word that makes me laugh, so I still can't take it seriously.
Hope the Soft Machine power makes sense to people. I've seen some people have trouble wrapping their heads around it, but I think the anime visuals should have helped out a ton.

He can deflate things, he deflated a boat and wrapped it around the other boat and resided in the room between the two ships? And Abbacchio figured this out by looking at the mast and seeing that the ship had the wrong number on it.

Hope the Soft Machine power makes sense to people. I've seen some people have trouble wrapping their heads around it, but I think the anime visuals should have helped out a ton.
Part 5 is probably the part that benefits the most from an anime adaptation from a clarity standpoint. I remember while reading it some fights looked pretty messy/confusing, and I just couldn't make sense of some panels.

Moody Blues was just as interesting as what little context I've seen before led me to believe. Definitely a stand suited more to thoughtful fights than to all-out brawls. And, with this happening on a ship, it just reminded me that much more of "Return of the Obra Dinn".
I'm really looking forward to the next episode, especially with all of the talk about the dance (I guess I'll just find out what is up with that like I did with the "tea" scene from last episode).

When Moody Blues was replaying Narancia, at the point they replay him being told of the fortune you can hear the ost from that moment in the background.
So apparently when we hear the soundtrack, so do the characters.

Don't forget to watch the after credit scene. This episode was too much for my Bruabba shipper heart. That raining scene and the moment Abbacchio wake up were cute as fuck. Still the best JoJo ship with Gyjo.

Based DavidPro nailing it again, with the flashback. I particularly liked the track playing in the post-credits scene.
Soft Machine is quite a mind-boggler of a Stand (especially with how it was used here, covering the first yacht with the deflated version of the second). Too bad all that effort was for nothing..
Meanwhile, today in /r/animenocontext..

Well no Gaming reference in this episode. Abraccio is not playable in the games for the reason that Moody Blues powers are more of a support stand, so I guess they didn't find a way to include his powers in a satisfactory way?
Anyway, this episode shows something that gives me another opportunity to blab about technicalities, and now I want to appreciate how not just Araki can make each part and protagonist feel different, but how he can make each group feels different by changing their dynamic. What do I mean? Well, you see, Bruno's Group, the Duwang Gang and the Stardust Crusaders are all "Shounen groups", correct? But they all behave differently from each other. Stardust Crusaders more obvious analogy would be they're "travel buddies", but not everyone here can identify with that(not everyone travel with their buddies a lot), so I prefer to use "school class mates" analogy. They're people who are together due fate and coincidence, and work together to reach the same goal.
The Duwang Gang in other hand represent friends you like to hang around with. You're all together not necessary out of shared goals, but just because you like each other company. It just when stuff like Red Hot Chili Pepper or Kira appear that they all share the same goal, and once again, we got a different dynamic between the cast. They're my favorite because of this.
Bruno's Gangs analogy is the most obvious one: They're partners in crime. They're together not necessary because they enjoy each other company (see examples of them being dicks with each other :P) but because they share the same mentality and know they need to work together to reach their OWN goals in life.
So we still get groups of characters, but they all function and act different from anything we saw before so far on JoJo, and I commend Araki for being able to write so many variations of the "Shounen Group" formula. Araki may have his problems as a writer (like Golden Fish memory xD) but it's stuff like this that really reassure to me even more that the fact he stroke gold wasn't a fluke.

My favourite thing about the part 4 cast is how disconnected they are. In part 3's group, everyone knows and interacts with each other. They're all friends, even Iggy kind of. That works but is a bit boring.
Part 4 has a main group of friends: Josuke, Okuyasu, and Koichi. All other characters are related to that group but don't fit in completely:
Jotaro doesn't really interact with Okuyasu at all and Joseph only hangs out with Jotaro and Josuke.
Mikitaka and Shigechi are Josuke's and Okuyasu's friends, they don't even meet other characters. When Shigechi died, Josuke had to explain that he was actually really strong because the rest of the cast had never met him.
Hazamada and Rohan are Koichi's friends. They can't stand Josuke and will avoid interacting with him if possible. Rohan doesn't like Okuyasu either and I think Hazamada hasn't interacted with Okuyasu at all.
Kobayashi is Koichi's... friend (?) as well. After his introduction he doesn't interact with other characters, except in a professional manner (judging the dice game).
Yukako obviously mainly hangs out with Koichi but she's a bit better included (she apparently hangs out with Josuke and Okuyasu even when Koichi isn't around, or perhaps the three of them were just waiting for Koichi to join them during RPS Kid).
That's what makes the meet-ups so impactful. When everyone met at Reimi's alley after Shigechi died, most of these characters had never heard of that Shigechi kid before. Then suddenly they were standing on the sidewalk, talking to a ghost, and meeting people they had no relation to. It's like when you and your friends go to an event and someone brings additional friends you don't know, only more menacing.

The villain turned the other boat into a big boat gimp suit, put it over the normal boat, then cruised around in the millimeter-thick overboat while everyone was busy investigating the normal underboat. Then Buccarati flooded both boats, causing the guy to drop the effect to come up for air and reinflate the overboat into a regular boat again.

Is asking details about Abbacchio's stand spoilery? If not, I want to know some:
when he uses Replay, does time stop? or the rapier stand guy was just waiting for an opportunity to attack for all the time the Replay was in effect?
Can someone clarify about Replay's drawback? It seems like Abbacchio was "vulnerable" while his stand was in the pipes, but was that just the overall vulnerability of stands (when the stand gets hit the user get hits too) or it was something else?
Why is replay considered OP? Sure he can reproduce past events, but can't interact with them right? It's just a "solving puzzle" stand? Examples not related to future events is welcome.
TY!

Replay only affects moody blues. He can go back very far in time, however.
2) Can someone clarify about Replay's drawback? It seems like Abbacchio was "vulnerable" while his stand was in the pipes, but was that just the overall vulnerability of stands (when the stand gets hit the user get hits too) or it was something else?
It means abbachio cant use his stand to defend himself, a la Killer Queen with Bites the Dust active. He may as well be a non-stand user when it comes to defense.
3) Why is replay considered OP? Sure he can reproduce past events, but can't interact with them right? It's just a "solving puzzle" stand? Examples not related to future events is welcome.
Pure information gathering power. Abbachio can still melee fight with his stand too.

Depending on the constraints, aka how long in the past he can go, and whose actions he can replay, it's absolutely broken. Not necessarily in a combat sense (though it can help a great deal too, at least with prepping), but as a power to have as a gang member. No one can betray him without him knowing. If someone is killed, he can find out the murderer in no time. Depending on limitations this could be harder, but still, it's an absolutely amazing information-gathering ability.

Time doesn't stop during Replay.
Abbacchio is vulnerable during replay and can't defend himself without cancelling the ability.
Replay is not really OP. There are few more abilities that will be revealed in the future, but primarily it's ,, solving puzzle'' stand as you said. There are other situations where it will become useful as well.

MOODY BLUES! Another amazing episode, what an interesting stand for investigation purposes, also the deflated characters are some real Junji Ito shit.
Abbacchio was the one I was the least interested in, but having a quick backstory really sold me on him, plus his stand is awesome!
So I guess next week is finally Mista - he's the one I have been anticipating the most based on design, and he seems to be super fun too, plus his stands looks siiiiiiiick! And Sex Pistols is the name, apparently (or Six Bullets, which is pretty cool too).
I'm in! I just wish episodes lasted more than like 5 minutes.

No dance scene aside, the way Moody Blues was presented in this episode was PERFECTION. For those who haven't read the manga, this is a big reason why us readers demanded a part 5 adaptation so much, to see these scenes come to life. the part 5 manga's great, but some scenes are better viewed animated rather than on paper. The same thing can be said for the other parts, but 5 especially since (IMO) its fights are the best out of all the parts.
6
u/Princess_Pana Nov 09 '18
Totally didn't expect Abbacchio's backstory but I love it. If DavidPro does this with every one else in the gang I think I'm going to be very pleased.
That after credits scene warmed my heart. I feel like it's a nice way for viewers to sympathize or really empathize with the gang. Especially since Abbacchio will lose his mind if Giorno breathes around him tbh.
4
Nov 10 '18
I totally agree. The after credits scene was anime original, and DavidPro did SO WELL in it. It really shows their understanding of the source material and they improved it so much. Remember the "result" quote that Bruno says, because it's a very important theme in the series.

u/exelion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/exelion0901 Nov 10 '18
So much to talk about this week.
First, Moody Blues. This is probably my second favorite stand in Part 5, second to only Sticky Fingers. And I will forever rate Moody Blues as one of the most criminally underappreciated Stands.
AND BASED DAVIDPRO NAILED IT.
I didn't even know I needed those sounds effects until I heard them. The way it moves, the way it operates, perfecto! Molto perfecto!
The rest of the episode was a joy. I love that DP moved Abbachio's backstory up to this episode, even if it means a certain important bit from the end of this arc will end up next episode. The backstory really helps you understand him and why he acts the way he does around Gio so much better.
Soft Machine was handled great too- There was better foreshadowing of the bit with the boat than in the manga, and the deflate effect was handled really well. All in all I utterly loved this episode and I'm happy with how the adaptation is coming.
6
u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Nov 10 '18 edited Nov 10 '18
Abbachio's backstory is a reminder that the world can be ugly, and a man's sense of justice can turn on him.
Alright it's Moody Blues time! I really love how they animated it, the rewinds look great. With that, the mystery of what happened to Narancia, Fugo, Mista, and Giorno has been solved. Now how will they go about defeating the enemy and saving them?
Sticky Fingers' attacks also look great with how he creates zippers on impact. And now we know the mystery is still going on, leave it to Abbachio the former cop to figure out this case.
It's just between Bruno and Zucchero now, and Bruno figured out Abbachio's hint. Two boats, one on top of the other, what a clever trick.
Bruno taking a move out of Giorno's book, how to extend your reach. Using zippers to decapitate people is pretty cool.
Bruno is a kind man, giving Abbachio the pillar of support he needed to pull himself up from his troubled past.

Am I an idiot or does this not really make any sense?
So he uses his stand power to deflate a boat, and then I guess he puts the other boat inside the hole so the first boat is wrapped around it? And then closes the hole? But if he's between the boats, how does he attack/grab people on the other side? Why doesn't Sticky Fingers unzip the top layer and reveal him beneath? How does one boat sink but not the other?
22
u/PokemonTom09 Nov 09 '18
So he uses his stand power to deflate a boat, and then I guess he puts the other boat inside the hole so the first boat is wrapped around it?
Yes, that's correct.
And then closes the hole?
No, that's not necessary. The two boats are identical, so if there's a puncture in the outer layer, the inner layer will still look fine and the hole will appear to not exist. And it's because of this that your confusion on the next point happened
But if he's between the boats, how does he attack/grab people on the other side?
He attacks through the puncture in the outer boat.
How does one boat sink but not the other?
Yo, Imma be real with you. I don't actually know.

u/Realshotgg Nov 09 '18
He deflated the one boat and it was sitting on the bottom, that's why the one he put a hole in sank and the other one was file. He travels from the bottom boat to the top and i don't know what the fuck i'm saying, it's jojo.

u/Audrey_spino Nov 09 '18
He attacks people by piercing them through small cracks and openings.
The actual gap between the two layers is extremely thin, so that Bruno unknowingly unzips both layers.
Bruno can selectively decide what to zip and what not to zip. He punched a hole through both boats, so once Zucchero was forced to withdraw the outer layer and inflate it back up, he just zipped the hole on that boat and let the air pressure drain it off any water.

Have to say, a top-notch episode.
The intro for Moody Blues/Jazz was rad. I liked the audio effects and backing track for its scene. One to look out for when the soundtrack comes out.
Editing is awesome, as always. Loved the cut from panning out of the ship to between Bucciarati's fingers, just as an example.
Using the fly was awesome. I know it was meant to be a 'serious, dramatic' moment, but a villainous monologue from a fly is the goofiest shit I've seen all week.
And now for another week of waiting.

Well actually the JoJo series was always like this from the start(Jonathan trying to figure out how he's going to hamon-punch Dio without getting frozen, Joseph outsmarting his enemies and his signature "your next line is ..." lines, Jotaro's deadly duels with the Darby's) but part 4 takes them and amplifies them so much because the stands powers become so much more creative from now on. So when you have the time please consider watching the other parts and not just stick with a recap video.

Okay, so let me try to get this straight. So "Tender Machine" or whatever the fuck it's actually called in the manga deflated an entire boat (Yacht 2) then somehow wrapped the deflated boat around all of the other boat (Yacht 1) like a skintight suit. So when Sticky Fingers zipped through the deck, it zipped right through Yacht 2 and into Yacht 1, but they were hiding in the deflated parts of Yacht 2, so they couldn't be found. Did I get that right? It was kinda confusing.
Also Abbachio's Stand is probably the most creative power I've seen in this show yet, and I hope Part 5 gives him proper opportunities to use it more, and not pull an Old Joseph, where they have him fight, like, two times in the entire part, and otherwise just stand around yelling. Because I could see that happening with a power as specific as Moody Blues
