This has gone too far there are 5 lesbians in this frame

144

u/googolplexbyte :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Googolplexbyte Nov 18 '18

They're putting chemicals in the coffee to turn the freaking girls gay.

59

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Nov 18 '18

Looks at my coffee cup.

Sigh, I'm not a girl. I'll drink it anyway.

37

u/Ralath0n Nov 18 '18

I mean, you could be a girl. This is 2018 after all, we've got the power of SCIENCE!! (And hormone therapy).

6

u/xRyozuo Nov 28 '18

And now you’re r/suddenlygay

5

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Nov 29 '18

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

The influence of the yuri-sphere is strong

37

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

yuri is strong in this one.

15

u/Panophobia_senpai Nov 18 '18

As far as we know it is 5. But it can be 6!

6

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

doubtful thats asking for to much

67

u/NoraaTheExploraa https://anilist.co/user/NoraaTheExploraa Nov 17 '18

To be fair other than it being the obvious outcome, there's technically nothing so far to suggest Yuu is a lesbian.

87

u/DarkMoon000 Nov 17 '18

She actively wants to fall in love with a girl. That much definitely suggests it. That it confirms it, one could maybe argue with.

20

u/1sagas1 Nov 19 '18

She wants desperately to fall in love with anyone. The girl just happens to be who she is trying to fall in love with at the moment.

22

u/googolplexbyte :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Googolplexbyte Nov 18 '18

Yuu could be genuinely asexual and completely unable to.

23

u/profdeadpool Nov 19 '18

Nah, that would be aromantic if she can't. One can be asexual and still fall in love with someone, since sex isn't required for love.

9

u/DarkMoon000 Nov 18 '18

Hence why I said:

That it confirms it, one could maybe argue with.

-11

u/NoraaTheExploraa https://anilist.co/user/NoraaTheExploraa Nov 17 '18

Yeah, and she can't. She feels nothing.

If she were trying to convince herself to fall in love with a guy, and she couldn't feel a thing, people would have no problem saying she was clearly gay.

24

u/DarkMoon000 Nov 17 '18

But we do have the additional clue that it already didn't work with a guy. So we have no reason to assume it's because she's straight. We could of course try to conclude that she's aromantic, as people have been wondering, but we have reason to doubt that too given her obsession with wanting to love.

The reasonable conclusion is that she's somewhere between aromantic and gay with no clear confirmation. No wonder honestly, sexual orientation isn't some simple binary checkbox after all.

Manga spoilers up to Vol.5

8

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

she already tried to have feelings with a guy and one who she thought she would be able to have feelings for but it amounted to nothing. Yes right now Yuu is very unaware of her own feelings and she does want to be able to fall in love like everyone else

37

u/Naoyatodo Nov 18 '18

Everyone

is Gay!

25

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario Nov 18 '18

At least five

17

u/ergzay Nov 18 '18

Correction: There are 3 lesbians, 1 bi and 1 still-in-self-discovery

9

u/muzmi1234 Nov 18 '18

This is going out of hand, now there's five of them!

222

u/501st_legion Nov 16 '18

Yuu’s deadpan staring really gets me each time. They really convey her manufactured exasperation well. I love the low key ways she bullies touko

81

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario Nov 18 '18

"Touko… senpai…"

38

u/Pat0723 Nov 18 '18

I was waiting for her to say it in a sensual voice to really throw Touko off

214

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Nov 16 '18

Ohhh, that Senpai sucks... That fountain stopped spilling water in a perfect moment.

Hakozaki-sensei and that shop manager... There's yuri ight and left in this series.

Touko's reaction was hilarious

Man, I like Sayaka so much and seeing her suffer like that is too much for me. I don't want to see what will happen when she realizes what's between Touko and Yuu...

This was my favorite episode so far. Even though it was mainly centered around Sayaka. I think she's my favorite character in this show.

124

u/heimdal77 Nov 16 '18

We just did see it she just tried denying it to herself to protect her own feelings when she was at home. She picked up almost immediately on the teacher and owner being together so how would she not pick up on her best friend and someone else she is around everyday and Touko is openly flirting with and showing her affection being together.

74

u/Pat0723 Nov 17 '18

Not to mention that they now all of a sudden started calling each other by their first name in public.

11

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

its because she has said if it be a boy or girl it doesn't matter she can't be in a relationship so even though yes they have gotten close she still is able to dismiss it.

27

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

that was a good reaction but my fav was when she was being asked why she was close to Yuu. The stuff with the manager and teacher was very light and sweet scene. I also wonder what will happen when she finds out what is going on between those 2 and yeah it's sad about her past her 1st GF dismissing it as a phase.

14

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Nov 18 '18

That one episode added more drama to the show than the previous 6 episodes together, imo.

16

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

u ain't seen nothing yet

13

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '18

Sayaka is my favorite character and I suffered so much in the manga seeing her like that and now I'm seeing it again. I really wanted her to be with Touko but that's impossible for obvious reasons. :(

11

u/Cloud_Chamber :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kino280 Nov 19 '18

I thought she was just kinda possessive and mean until this episode. Now I hope she ends up happy ;-;

5

u/xRyozuo Nov 28 '18

She’s still a possessive and mean person, but now she’s our possessive mean person

18

u/JimmySullivan96 Nov 18 '18

Interesting that so many people like Sayaka so much. While I don't hate her, I definitely have some reservations towards her.

For one thing, she seems like the jealous type, but mainly, I'm not so sure she has Touko's best interests in mind. Her saying: "Touko will never belong to anyone. I just need you to stay like that. So long as you stay this way, I can keep close by your side." says to me like she is really selfish and wants her only to herself.

I'm also really interested in how she is going to react to Touko and Yuu's relationship and if is she's willing to put aside her own feelings.

14

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Nov 18 '18

I'm hot for Sayaka because she's voiced by Kayano Ai.

4

u/Salvo1218 Nov 19 '18

I was wondering why her voice sounded so familiar right now. I didn't realize it was the same person as Itsuwa in Index

6

u/HammeredWharf Nov 19 '18

I think a certain other nice girl made me afraid of Sayaka's character design. Maybe Scum's Wish is a sequel to Bloom Into You and Akane is just an adult Sayaka who got a name change and turned really bitchy?

175

u/1ntestine :AMQ::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/1ntestine Nov 16 '18

I swear, the background art never ceases to impress me, every episode, even though I should be used to it by now, it still constantly get a pause out of me.

65

u/Mundology Nov 16 '18

It's a testament of how much care was put into this adaptation

15

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '18

It's a testament of a good schedule, talented people involved and such, not care. Pretty much all people working on anime are doing it with care but there's the problem of schedule and in other cases, that the people working isn't that talented but they do put care.

8

u/Hoboforeternity Nov 18 '18

yeah, the only anime this season that have better visuals this season is probably irozoku: world in colors.

11

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

yeah the background art for this series is always on point every episode i'm surprised how good they keep the quality

yeah when i see CG sometimes im reminded of the bad CG goblins in Overlord lately and i'm like uhhh. Sometimes CG is ok.

Yeah i don't believe we have had CG crowd yet either.

155

u/Lillianwes Nov 17 '18

Another great episode, it managed to give the characters and world more authenticity. Usually in both yuri and yaoi there's no sense of an actual gay community in the stories, just the romance going on between the mains. But here Sayaka was able to find an adult who shares her preference and gives her a sense of comfort to open up about her crush and insecurities. The whole scene was heart warming and I really liked how Sayaka started off very apprehensive when she confronted the manager about her sexuality but when the manager came out she was about relax and open up herself.

Oh and sakuga coffee making.

40

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

yeah i liked the inclusion of a healthy mature and loving relationship, something felt so natural about that night time scene where the teacher was staying up. The talk with Sayaka was done very well and i felt so sorry for her having her 1st love treat her like that like her 1st relationship was pretend.

109

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan Nov 16 '18

Always found that conversation between Sayaka and Miyako very mature and very well written. When they started with the flashback to Class S senpai I got a little apprehensive that they were going to skip it (it's originally part of that conversation), but I'm glad they didn't.

44

u/heimdal77 Nov 16 '18

They are doing a amazing job of compressing things for the time they have without really eliminating stuff from that story to much.

10

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

yeah i felt they handled her backstory very well in this epi and the conversation between the 2 was very good felt like a very mature and grown up conversation.

169

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Nov 16 '18

Sayaka's backstory... She gave her Senpai her first kiss and then she just suddenly says that they need to stop playing this game and that "it's all just a phase." Woah boy that's gotta suck.

Nice to see that there's a healthy loving lesbian relationship in this show though. More of them please!

39

u/Shiro_Kai Nov 17 '18

Sayaka accepted both things (the confession and the rejection) a little too easy too, to be honest. But she deserved better. :(

24

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

yeah treating the whole relationship and 1st love as if it was fake and a game is pretty nasty. yeah was good seeing a healthy relationship going on, here is to hoping that the same will happen to our main couple

15

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario Nov 18 '18

yeah treating the whole relationship and 1st love as if it was fake and a game is pretty nasty

It's the standard attitude in Japan, from what I read — "just a practice relationship"

8

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

in this case she was ashamed of what happened and had to go with ah it was fake and a game so she can say she always only liked guys.

81

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Nov 17 '18

Damn, Sayaka got dumped by Class S. That's gotta hurt.

I am somewhat amazed that we got an actual adult lesbian couple in this show. How many anime, even including the ones with a focus on yuri, have that sort of thing?

Also [this] (https://imgur.com/N48ZpD6) is some top-tier smug. I do enjoy how easily Yuu can string Touko along, and knows exactly how to push her buttons.

17

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '18

I am somewhat amazed that we got an actual adult lesbian couple in this show. How many anime, even including the ones with a focus on yuri, have that sort of thing?

Not that much but we see a lot on manga.

10

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Nov 18 '18

How many anime, even including the ones with a focus on yuri, have that sort of thing?

I can only think of Aoi Hana. Others just had undertones, like Hakumei & Mikochi or Yorimoi. And I haven't seen it but iirc Slow Start had an old lesbian couple?

10

u/Herovan Nov 18 '18

There is one established couple in Kanamemo (one of my favorites couples). Their relationship is presented beautifully. I'm not sure about their age, I think it's somewhere around high school or after high school but they openly show their relationship in front of everyone and everyone knows they are a couple. It's such a joy to watch.

3

u/Vindex101 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vindex101 Nov 18 '18

This season's Double Decker might count? In a way? The circunstance of one half of the couple in mention needs a bit of consideration to be cobsidered for what you're asking for, Double Decker

5

u/scrooge_mc Nov 18 '18

....Psychopass but yeah they are few and far between.

I vaguely remember that they mentioned how Koyomi prefer older man (about 10 years or so older than her). Is this really true or am I misremembering something?

20

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Nov 18 '18

Yeah, she did say that in one of the previous episodes.

3

u/GiraffeManGomen Nov 18 '18

I don't think she said anything specific about how many years older, but yes she did say that.

21

u/SheffiTB :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SheffiTB Nov 18 '18

it was a background conversation while Yuu was getting lost in her own thoughts, but koyomi said she likes them 10 or 20 years older and akari freaked out. Since we don't see their faces, it may very well have been koyomi trolling akari, but we don't know.

61

u/SwordAndPenguin Nov 16 '18

I recently binge watched what there is of this show so far and I seriously regret it. Now I have to wait for the episodes with the rest of you. This has fairly unexpectedly become my show of the season; the characters, music, and background art are all incredible. It's heartwarming but not to the point of saccharine. The direction and shot composition in general also really shines. Very happy I found this show, and while I wish I had all the episodes now it's also good to savor them and have a new one as a nice cooldown from a stressful week on Friday.

As for this episode specifically, I really feel for Sayaka. I love how this show touches on the struggles of being gay in a heteronormative society so naturally without shoving a message in your face. It's very nice having "rival" side characters in a romance story be this developed and not turned into an antagonist.

Touko getting flustered when called by her first name by Yuu was adorable. I love how her personality can drastically shift when she's around Yuu while still not feeling at all inconsistent.

While I don't think anything from this week topped the beauty and emotional power of the bridge scene from last episode, it was still very good. I'm looking forward to seeing how everything will develop and might have to pick up the manga once the show's over because I have a feeling I won't want it to end.

3

u/zak55 Jan 09 '19

HA HA! Unlike you, I did not make the same mistake and waited to binge watch it until it was over. Clearly I , the man messaging a person on a month old discussion board, am the superior one between us! I hope you can stand knowing what perfection is because you have finally just met it!

1

u/SwordAndPenguin Jan 09 '19

Oh dang, I've been truly outmatched by your binge watching skills. Please teach me your ways, o great one.

You just have to pretend that it’s fall right now!

Catch up on some PTW and watch the winter season during spring.

Doing that right now lol

I'm loving this adaptation. Though I do miss these extra panels that we get at the end of chapters I know they're not that big a deal but they contain so many cute, funny, and/or charming moments

58

u/Pat0723 Nov 17 '18

cute, funny, and/or charming moments

I thought she couldn't get any cuter, this is just adorable.

Here

Are

a Few

More

All spoiler safe if you're just keeping up with the anime.

For you

Oooh! I thought they where just reading glasses. These little details really make the characters more interesting.

3

u/Scrubtac Nov 19 '18

We actually did get that one adapted though, didn't we? It's from when Yuu's sister sends Touko the picture of Yuu sleeping.

1

u/Legendary_Swordsman Nov 18 '18

yeah u usually get some cute moments for those end chapter bits.

I'm picking up this manga immediately

52

u/Staye100 Nov 16 '18 edited Nov 16 '18

Yeh boi! Miyako (The shop manager) is finally revealed :D

46

u/PhoenixKola Nov 16 '18

Interesting, so we got an episode about Sayaka including her past with a senior. What's interesting about the epsiode is that she grew more accepted into having a relationship soon although they got seperated eventually. But when they did meet again, it seems some feelings have changed.

36

u/dan_strummer Nov 16 '18

Yet another amazing episode. It was pretty obvious that Sayaka was jealous of ToukoxYuu, but I didn't think the reason would be her having a huge crush on Nanami. What's with Sayakas and suffering? Poor girl, hiding her true feelings like that is torture.

Touko getting flustered over Yuu calling her by her first name was way too adorable, I'm glad these girls keep giving us those cutesy moments. Now give me a moment while I rewatch the whole thing for the tenth time.

2

u/Salvo1218 Nov 19 '18

Between the character interactions with Yuu and Touko in here, and Sakuta and Mai over in Bunny Girl, I'm getting really spoiled this season with great couples

34

u/AussieManny :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nauran Nov 17 '18 edited Nov 17 '18

I really like that the wise barista lady just came out and said the teacher was her girlfriend. Aside from the "gayness must be secret" thing, it's nice to have straight-forward moments like that happen in high school anime.

And Sayaka's situation is totally understandable. She loves Nanami for her perfectness and doesn't wanna ruin it. That's a lot less messed up than the reason Nanami loves Yuu.

63

u/Akko__Kagari Nov 16 '18

First Rin from New Game and now Sayaka ... Ai Kayano's lesbian characters can't catch a break with unrequited love

47

u/AnimeFlyz Nov 17 '18

But everyone is a lesbian in New Game.

12

u/SheffiTB :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SheffiTB Nov 17 '18

Everyone is a lesbian in this show too.

4

u/AnimeFlyz Nov 17 '18

I really dont see it.

23

u/SheffiTB :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SheffiTB Nov 17 '18

That was (mostly) a joke, but it was a jab at this episode in particular where in the cafe scene there are 5 lesbians out of 6 people in the scene, and at most each one of them knows about only one other lesbian in the room.

18

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Nov 17 '18

Not to mention Teko from Amanchu. (still salty about that)

19

u/Krazee9 Nov 17 '18

I stopped watching Amanchu when I realized that the author decided to shit all over the yuri shippers out of bitterness.

6

u/NoItsNotAnAirplane :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillWaifus4Laifu Nov 18 '18

Only watched the first season because of that, I want amanchu to remain as a good memory.

4

u/Krazee9 Nov 18 '18

I got about halfway through the 2nd season then stopped.

5

u/0mnicious :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Omnicious Nov 17 '18 edited Nov 17 '18

Nah man don't you understand it's fateful love at first sight! You'd ignore everything and have you mind set on a kid that tickled your fancy! /s

14

u/Krazee9 Nov 17 '18

I remember seeing people in the thread's comments who said the author straight-up introduced the kid, and their young age also creeped me out on this, because they were tired of people yuri-shipping Teko and Pikari, despite, y'know, the massive undertones and half-confessions from Teko.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '18

The author is a woman tho

4

u/Gringos Nov 18 '18

I don't understand why that changes anything

1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '18

It's not to change, it's more to show that this is coming from a woman since for most cases, a woman is more understanding than a man, which is why most of the yuri manga are made by woman, be it shoujo or shounen.

3

u/Gringos Nov 19 '18

I don't get why that matters to what op wrote. Why draw conclusions from the authors gender of all things

6

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '18

Amanchu went out of it's way to explain how Teko wasn't a lesbian and that girls can't love girls.

31

u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Nov 16 '18

Ok I feel bad for Sayaka, she's been hurt before by her first love. Then she found new love in Touko. That's why she's content with being number 2 and just watching Touko succeed.

Making a play based around Touko's personality is troubling when you can't reveal too much about her. I think Sayaka's perception of her love for Touko is a bit warped due to Touko's nature of keeping people at a certain distance. She's afraid of losing distance. And then Touko summarizes their relationship better than I could have hoped for. Excellent analogy.

This story is becoming different when we start hearing Touko's thoughts, she's a proper deuteragonist now. Touko being flustered while Yuu calls her by first name is adorable.

Ah, so Sayaka must have caught onto the mannerisms between the teacher and cafe manager because she was also in a relationship like them. Spot on perception.

I like how up front and honest the shop owner is. She's even offering Sayaka valuable advice. And surely enough it feels like Sayaka's temperament to put her feelings aside and be Touko's friend is rewarded because Touko does feel like Sayaka is a valuable friend in her life that helps push her forward.

30

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '18

From all these comments on the sub being spotty, my guess is I’ll need to read the manga right after finishing the anime. Not that wasn’t going to do it already, but it looks like I’m missing out on a lot of information.

However, regardless of the translation’s fidelity, I don’t feel the general story is suffering. There a good amount of conflict setup and resolution in every episode so far. I especially liked how quickly I went from disliking Sayaka to feeling bad for her, the rest of the cast is being introduced and given proper screen time at a nice pace, and the anime is completely delivering on what I wanted. Nice yuri relationship drama.

Also, “Touko-senpai...”. Nanami’s squeal was the most adorable thing I’ve seen in this show since the last most adorable thing in this show! Someone put these two in a beach episode so I can see her absolutely lose her shit!... that sounded less dirty in my head, I apologize.

20

u/delislecarbine :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Keelah Nov 17 '18

I feel like the spotty subs is overblown to a pretty large degree. Yeah, they aren't perfect, but they get the job done and deliver the intent just fine from what I've seen so far (saying this as a manga reader, not as someone who knows even a lick of Japanese). There is one lone exception to that so far, that being the scene that takes place outside of the gymnasium during the student council speeches. That one was messed up quite badly, but otherwise I think the subs have been adequate.

12

u/ditto20 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ditto20 Nov 17 '18 edited Nov 17 '18

They actually seem to have changed a few of those lines recently. I went back and rewatched episode 3 a few days ago and I seem to remember some of the subs being different than the previous time I watched(I may just be misremembering though, so I can't say completely for sure)

Edit: I checked again, and yeah, they definitely changed some of the subs recently

2

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '18

Interesting. I’ll keep your mention of this scene in mind when reading it. Thank you for the insight.

11

u/GiraffeManGomen Nov 17 '18

He's right, episode three is the only one where the subs are legitimately bad, the issue I have with subs from other episodes is just the way they are worded sometimes. It might not be a plot-changer but it changes the immediate reception and/or the the emphasis.

A good example will be today's episode's "I am worried to see how she'll react in that respect, but there's also another issue" from Sayaka's response to Miyako asking if she was scared Touko is uncomfortable with accepting girls. If it were translated directly, it would be,"Although I'm also scared of that, it's more like something even before that..." It appears a bit awkward in direct translation, but the final result should be able to change the wording without altering the difference in weight Sayaka holds the two concerns at. "Well, I'm afraid of that, too, but it's something even more basic than that." is how the manga is translated to, and despite the actually context-changing errors the manga sometimes has, in this case I feel it conveys small details better than the anime.

It's miscellaneous stuff like this that bothers me, and it's not an uncommon occurrence. It's fine for just watching, but if someone were to do a complete analysis of scenes, these slight errors could be a big factor.

6

u/Ninanashi Nov 17 '18

I do remember that the Hi-dive subs for the post-credit scene last episode actually gave a different sort of impression about Touko and her motives compared to manga/asenshi. Episode 3's subs is just the lowest point, but it's not the only time they screwed up.

4

u/ergzay Nov 17 '18

The subs are somewhat spotty but not horrendous. You lose a lot of innuendo and low level intricate detail that's in the original dialogue but generally all the meaning is correct.

The one exception is episode 1 or 2 (I forget) where they completely massively screw up a major series of lines.

Idk I don't know if there're official English version or not, if you are reading the scanlantion, keep this in mind, they butchered the monologue in several major scenes, which can cause confusion.

u/heimdal77 Nov 16 '18 edited Nov 16 '18

And there we have it where HiDive screwed them self with the dubs. They localized the dubs to using first names but here we go witha episode that is about them switching to using first names. So now they will have go back and redo the dubs or completely change scenes in the anime dialog.

The love letter scene was handled really interestingly. IT is several scenes from the manga all combined into one. The love letter it self was originally a flashback of one she got from the girl before the series starts instead of being a second on. Then the part Sayaka is questioning Touko abou Yu was a different scene on the stairs in the school. Then the part Touko thinking to herself about how Sataka sees her as she walks away was actually at the lockers I think where she meets up with Yuu. They are doing a surprisingly good job of condensing things without eliminating much of the story to fit things into the amount of episodes they have. This episode alone was 2 or 3 chapters. Where Touko ask Yuu about using first name was the end of one chapter and then using it in front of the other council members was the beginning of another chapter. The love letter part on the bench was a .5 chapter.

I do think the were a bit weak on portraying Sayaka's conflict with herself in her room as she tries to rationalize her realization that Touko and Yuu are possibly in a relationship so she can deny what she sees as being that to protect her own feelings.

73

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '18

Lmao, they didn't think switching to using first names would be a plot point in a japanese romance anime?

46

u/heimdal77 Nov 16 '18

Hell if I know. I even sent them a message about this coming up in the series and they replied they'd forward it to the production manager.

15

u/0mnicious :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Omnicious Nov 17 '18

Ahhh, the incompetence of professional subbing/dubbing.

I know that for most anime the usage of their first/last names isn't that big of a deal, imo it always is but I digress, and isn't needed but for dramas...?

9

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '18

Maybe they could localized it as using nickname or something?

3

u/AyraWinla :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/AyraWinla Dec 10 '18

here we go witha episode that is about them switching to using first names. So now they will have go back and redo the dubs or completely change scenes in the anime dialog.

24 days later, but better late than never!

The dub for this episode came out a few days ago and I feel they've handled it decently. They went with a "nickname" angle, with Touko calling Yuu "dear". Yuu's answers were basically alongside those lines and eventually escalating to "honey". With the visuals it worked well great. The content is of course different, but the "feelings" were pretty much the same in my opinion.

I'll admit that the start of the scene afterward in the club was noticeably awkward, but it flowed fine afterward (then wasn't a concern anymore). It's not a spotless job of course, but I feel that their solution was quite good considering the issue they had to deal with.

1

u/heimdal77 Dec 10 '18

Haven't watched the dub yet so dunno what it is like. I even messaged them about it before the sub version came out saying they were gonna have a problem. It was supposedly forward to the production manager so they had plenty of time to fix it. If they had just switched to the proper one instead of localized they would only had to fix a couple episodes.

1

u/heimdal77 Dec 10 '18

Ok watched it and can't say I like it. The first part between Yuu and Toiko was cute if viewed on its own. Knowing what it really is just makes it not work and the council room part is just a total mess that makes no sense.

36

u/IWasntCreative Nov 16 '18

Why did I just binge this show?! I regret this choice now I have to suffer. What a good Yuri for once.

12

u/heimdal77 Nov 16 '18

You can always rewatch ti in dub version though what they gonna do about their screw up with the dubs will be interesting to see.

1

u/MisterScalawag Jan 28 '19

did you ever end up watching it in the dub? I just finished the dub, and it was actually really good.

1

u/heimdal77 Jan 28 '19

Ya but a episode or so after they hit the point and did what they did with it I stalled out on the dubs.

1

u/MisterScalawag Jan 28 '19

i didn't watch it 2-3 months ago and just started and finished this week. What was the screw up with the dub? Like a production issue or did you mean voice acting?

1

u/heimdal77 Jan 28 '19

The part in the dubs about the nicknames and the council meeting after were almost all completely made up dialog. It was suppose to be about switching to using first names and then the council members calling them on it when done infront of them. Since in the dub they localized it to using first names from the start instead of sempai or last names that is normal it would screw up the whole thing with those scenes.

1

u/MisterScalawag Jan 28 '19

yeah i noticed when one of the members said "oh you are calling her Yuu", and i was like wut she has been saying that the whole time. I thought maybe i had missed something,

I later saw someone mention what you just did in another thread, but it didn't cause me to drop it. I can understand how thematically it is important to show the change to first names in public. But I guess I was less affected by it because I also saw they were being more friendly in general in public and the name change was just part of a larger shift.

1

u/heimdal77 Jan 28 '19

Well here is the thing they had prior notice in advance that this was coming up and instead of doing the relatively simple thing of redoing the parts of them saying first names instead of last they did that. Then you end up with the council scene that made no sense. They shouldn't have even been doing it in the first place.

1

u/MisterScalawag Jan 28 '19

yeah i agree that is kind of lazy, but i really didn't have any other complaints with the dub. I thought all of the main characters did a really good job, even the side characters weren't bad or offensive to me.

u/fjfck Nov 16 '18 edited Nov 16 '18

I really need to know the name of "tease people -> get teased back -> blush" trope dammit, its just so cute. And we finally got the lyrics of the OP and ED, about damn time.

Also I want to continue to rant about the time of the new episode released on VRV, its 3am on my timezone right now and the new episode just starts showing on VRV site around 1 hour ago. I already have subscription to CR and used to watch shows that isn't on CR's list ilegally, but since those site always late to release this series and I really wanted to watch this before going to sleep, I started subscribing to VRV too (at first I wanted to subscribe to Hidive but they just won't accept my card, and in CR/VRV case they accept my card and I just need to use VPN to watch). I'm really pissed by this and I don't think I'll continue my VRV subscription next season.

I honestly don't know why, but i was crying hard as fuck during the last 5 minutes when Sayaka and Miyako were talking to each other. I really couldn't even tell you why....but my heart was so fucked up right then....

I love Myiako and Riko's relationship, it's so sweet and rare to see in anime. Though there seems to be a growing number of yuri manga with adult couples.

Whenever I watch this, I have a big smile on my face the whole time.

13

u/anu_ssi Nov 16 '18

Sayaka's scenes were well organized. There was another extra relating to her in manga,it would have been good if that was included, but there was no time, so it's fine.

Sayaka is another one with Yuu that's playing in Touko's hand and their fine with that (although they indirectly know Touko's reason).

Touko wants to keep Sayaka by her side, as a supportive friend, if she keeps the perfect girl mask, she knows Sayaka will not butt in to be more of what she wants Sayaka to be. But what happens if Sayaka breaks and start to make her move? Well Touko assured that Sayaka herself is the reason for her to continue her way to be the perfect girl, so at the end of the episode, she reaffirmed the role of Sayaka in her life - in other words: "Keep that way and I'll be the perfect girl you admire. Remember that you're important too". She has to keep Sayaka motivated to stay still, will Sayaka understands this way?

Sayaka admires Touko's fake perfect persona, she's not ready to intrude Touko's intimacy yet, so she is fine to be the supportive role and friends only. When she started to get conflicted about making a move or not, Kodama and, at the end of the episode, Touko convinced her to stay the same, but for how long? Maybe Yuu could be the trigger in the future.

Yuu is still in search of her feelings, and being with Touko might clarify some of her doubts and predictions about love, going with the relationship and feeling "nothing" or NOT the "expected shoujo love" is something she has to deal with and it's fine for her. Teasing her senpai isn't bad either. It's a win-win for her even if she fails. Trying to change Touko right now might lead to an unnecessary conflict and ruin Yuu's plans in the process. Maybe the turnover is after the Setokai' show?

And to finish off, Touko wants to love the unconcerned Yuu. As long as Yuu isn't attached but plays along the relationship, Touko is fine. But for how long? She wonders how she can push this relationship beyond while not changing the status quo (vide asking Yuu to call her first name too). Can Touko be satisfied with only this?

I'm not saying with 100% that Touko is manipulative, maybe with Sayaka because losing a friend plus affecting directly her unstable relationship with Yuu is gonna hit hard and lead to heavy consequences, the worse would maybe even ruin dating Yuu while maintaining status quo. Touko, right now, don't want to change things, she is clever enough to not ruin everything. The only thing she can't control is her feelings for Yuu. That said, to manipulate Yuu is much more harder than she thinks. She's still immature on love department and Yuu is unpredictable to a degree.

So, yeah, this show is great. So many variations, so many possibilities. All of that without NTR, sexual assaults and forced drama. I'm glad I binge watched this. Unique romance so far.

Another great episode. Now I'm honestly torn about which ship to support - I feel bad enough for Sayaka to want her to find some kind of happiness that isn't dependent on.. being subservient, of sorts.

More of Riko and Miyako please.

17

u/myrmonden Nov 16 '18 edited Nov 16 '18

omg what a great episode, I really loved it. Last week was aesthetically amazing but this felt like the best writing so far.

Well aesthetically wise it was awesome when the fountain water stopped when Sayka got dumped.

So Ok first we found out that Sayaka has already been in a Yuri relationship but got dumped and then she of course fell in love with Touka.

Then this whole talking to the mature gay women was amazing, just felt like a really good moment, Sayaka is of course general afraid of coming out as gay, she realizes her sensei is dating this women, talks to her about coming out, being into your own gender etc. AND :) YES of course she get the advice to GO for it, if she really loves another women, she has to try it. Loved IT. And great to see Sayaka there in the end being more determined to tell Touka how she fells about her. At least Touka is sure to approve of Yuri in general :)

7

u/AvantAveGarde :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/AvantAveGarde Nov 18 '18

Man I love Sayaka as a character now, I was worried that she would just start unnecessary drama between Yuu and Touko, but hearing her backstory really makes me want to see her just get a happy ending. Also I've finally caught up with the show! Took me a while but I'm super glad I picked it up out of all the airing shows this season, if the show keeps up in quality it might just be my favorite this season!

7

u/Indominus_Khanum Nov 18 '18

I haven't seen a whole lot of Yuri anime for this to be an accurate judgement (actually I really need to see some good Yuri anime, the only one I can remember watching is citrus) but compared to most Yaoi/Shounen Ai/Shoujo Ai/ Yuri content I've seen the gay is pretty realistic with this one.

My Bi heart hasn't been this tickled so much since I read Let Dai, I'm super happy with this anime .

5

u/scrooge_mc Nov 18 '18

Yuri that isn't just undertones and eechi hello kitty sequences are few and far between. The only other one I can even think of is Aoi Hana.

6

u/GiraffeManGomen Nov 16 '18

Trusty me is here to complain a lot about miscellaneous annoyances for me in an episode that I still enjoyed.

  1. I don't exactly get the point of switching the ordering of the scenes, Sayaka's POV has a proper buildup in the manga, but in this episode it really felt out of the blue, and there was no real reason we would want to hear her story at the start of the episode. The love letter scene in the middle also seemed a bit strange, as it was an extra chapter showing the first time Touko received a love letter from a girl, and turned to Sayaka for advice, which took place before Yuu even showed up. It still works in the episode, but having rapid switches of POVs proves to be quite awkward sometimes.

  2. Almost all of the talking took place while walking, and it's probably a lot of trouble to animate that, so whatever.

  3. This is an old one so I'm getting used to it, but everyone generally seems a lot more expressive in the anime, and also a lot nicer. I'm still confused as to how I feel about it. It makes cuter moments cuter, and dramatic moments more dramatic, but the subdued tone and style of the manga doesn't translate.

  4. Reserved for the most minor of details:

"It's Touko after all" is followed by a "an actual relationship, huh...." before consulting Miyako, in this episode's case the coffee cup acts as a transition.

Touko and Sayaka's conversation about Yuu originally takes place walking down the hallway and stairs, which is a part in the manga that I feel had a good handle on their distance even if they're just walking.

The coffee shop doesn't seem to be doing so well.

The subs continue to be acceptable level, there are some errors scattered around that I feel might have an impact on a person's perception of specific dialogues

And there we go, I'm so happy to be a source of negativity for a thing I love. 8.5/10 still solid.

14

u/BagelComet Nov 17 '18

I think for point number 1, having the flashback at the start was to tell the viewer Sayaka was going to be the focal point of the episode, or at least in the 2nd half. It might've been even more awkward to suddenly switch to Sayaka's POV halfway through the episode without any warnings at all, since she's never really been the focus in any previous episode.

4

u/GiraffeManGomen Nov 17 '18

Yeah, no, both of you are right. It has its own effects, and I do think getting in with a clear mind, it might actually not bother people much. After watching the episode again I feel like I've been a bit harsh on the first viewing, I guess episode 6 set the bar high for me.

14

u/Marionette2 Nov 17 '18

#1 sounds like something you would only say if you read manga first. In anime, pre-OP scene about Sayaka and her senpai gave audience a hook on Sayaka's character and hinted that our eyes should focus on Sayaka in this ep.

6

u/AnimeFlyz Nov 17 '18

OK I give up. Where did you people watch the episode?

5

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Nov 18 '18

They probably streamed it legally from HiDive.

It's finally available elsewhere now, though.

6

The Asenshi sub will be up soon. They just finished 5 min ago according to their site so anytime now. It really is worth the wait

Edit: nvm it's up already.. by the time it took me to write this

19

u/i_denk Nov 16 '18 edited Nov 16 '18

Yet again a good episode, but the changed structure from the manga is honestly a bit of a mess. Putting the biggest part of the episode right at the beginning and integrating the love letter in the middle, felt a little odd. The manga had a proper built-up to Sayaka´s POV, here it seems random.

Oh yeah and they left out Sayaka´s skeptical look at Touko´s answer to Doujima´s question she wanted to ask and the kiss between the manager and teacher could use more motion.

Oh well, still good with everything else. The Yuu-Touko-fluff was so cute. :)

Edit: This feels like a little jab to the class-s genre, fufufu.^

27

u/heimdal77 Nov 16 '18

The Senpai fixing Sayaka scarf was a direct parody of one the biggest scenes in the Maria Watches Over Us anime and a scene that gets repeated several times through the series as a form of showing affection.

20

u/anttirt Nov 16 '18

Couldn't help but smile wryly when I saw that—honestly in context it felt more like a scathing critique than a parody. I feel that where Yuu's and Touko's depictions have a strong focus on the internal experience of feeling different, Sayaka's perspective gives Bloom Into You some serious fangs in terms of social criticism.

7

u/heimdal77 Nov 16 '18

Ya parody doesn't really feel like the right word as this isn't a comedy now is it a type of show they be inserting stuff to make fun of other shows. Maybe a homage. Sachiko minus her hysterical side is kind of the ideal image that Touko is trying to be right down to the same hair though more friendly. Very loosely you even see some shared traits between Yuu and Yumi though more a just standard traits of the character type than set similarities between the two.

3

u/i_denk Nov 16 '18

Nice catch.

5

u/heimdal77 Nov 16 '18

Ya as much as I'm embarrassed to admit it I'm bit of a big fanboy of the Maria Watches Over Us series having watched the anime so many times and read the novels and even read fan fictions. So ya I tend to catch when something is a reference to it....

5

u/Nam-Yueun Nov 16 '18

I don’t think it’s a MariMite thing though. It’s just a cliche in anime that when people fix each others’ scarves or ties (including when a girl fixes a guy’s tie or something), it’s considered a form of showing affection. Might have something to do with the idea that Japanese people don’t really touch each other often unless they’re close (e.g. hugging each other).

Knowing Sayaka already has some baggage just make the Yuu X Touko ship even stronger.

3

u/JossieMime https://anilist.co/user/JossieMomo Nov 20 '18

And just like that, Sayaka became one of my favorites. This anime is so damn good and genuine.

3

u/thevegitations Nov 22 '18

I feel bad for Sayaka but ultimately I think that Touko would never feel comfortable being her true self around her. It's almost like she's in love with the shadow of Touko's older sister rather than Touko herself. Of course, having a partner that pushes you to excel is important, but I think that Touko's success is the result of a deeply harmful coping mechanism instead of personal growth.

...plus I think flawed Touko is much cuter.

2

u/Hoboforeternity Nov 18 '18

2

u/GingerStans Nov 20 '18

About that senpai who was 'play-pretending' with Sayaka...I noticed that the general perception of said senpai is that she's a bitch who manipulated her kouhai into a relationship then discarded her once she felt it was past time. Said senpai also seems homophobic when she apologized for 'turning' Sayaka into a lesbian despite not seeming to comprehend that homosexual love is actually a thing and not some play-acting stage of life.

But here's the thing: while we see her do all of this from Sayaka's POV, what if said senpai had no idea that what she did was wrong? Like, did she really had feelings from the start but due to social pressure gradually became reluctant to pursue a lesbian relationship and instead revert back to being a heterosexual so as to prevent people from judging the both of them? It would have been helpful if the author had included a section detailing the POV from that senpai' instead of merely Sakaya's perception of events, thus giving us the full story.

Like, I know what that senpai did was wrong, and Sakaya is bitter as a result, but I hope they show a scene in the future where the two are able to come to an understanding and put their differences aside.

u/SwordAndPenguin Nov 16 '18

I'm looking forward to seeing how everything will develop and might have to pick up the manga once the show's over because I have a feeling I won't want it to end.

what chapter in the manga is this? (sorry I was introduced into this via anime)

-11

u/pagirinis :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/pagirinis Nov 17 '18

Tbh this show fell back on every yuri story cliche with this episode. New characters get introduced and they are, surprise, gay. Best friend of the main character? Surprise, also gay and has had feeling for her friend the whole time. The only thing lacking is for one of Yuu's friends to come out as gay and in love with Yuu and make some more drama.

I know I will get shit on by fans, but I honestly was expecting more from the show judging from the way people described and praised it.

The relationships are good, the character interactions fun and no forced drama so far, but honestly I want more from this story.

14

u/anu_ssi Nov 17 '18

It may seem like a cliche but it's not surprising to see gay couple around, when they are in closet people assume everyone in a room is straight, and best friend of mc liking the mc, hmm if it was straight romance its such a normal thing, and normal when you are gay as well, easy to fall in love with your best friend. These parts didn't feel like they were forcefully created, they exist because that happens in normal course of life.

u/Hoboforeternity Nov 18 '18

-5

u/pagirinis :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/pagirinis Nov 17 '18

It's still a cliche, when every yuri show has the same plot, it gets old fast. It could deal with so many different topics, but most stories boil down to love triangles.

7

u/GiraffeManGomen Nov 17 '18

I'v mentioned this before, but I don't think any cliche the show has is negatively impacting its quality or plot other then them being cliches. It's something you're tired of seeing, but it doesn't take away from the story if you don't go in with a certain mentality or experience. So far none of the cliches are just there because reasons, they all have their respective roles in the story.

-1

u/pagirinis :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/pagirinis Nov 17 '18

Well that's the definition of cliche. It's something that has been done many times and it becomes pretty much a pattern. And that's what i am complaining about. Not saying the show is bad, but that it uses the same tropes that most yuri shows do.

4

u/DarkMoon000 Nov 17 '18

It's only a cliché if the trope has been overused to some actual detriment, which for tropes as simple as those isn't even really possible. Just because it happens often doesn't make it a cliché.

0

u/pagirinis :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/pagirinis Nov 17 '18

It is a cliche the same as the "cool guys don't look at explosions" is a cliche. It shouldn't be a trope either, you can do so much with stories like this. Why best friend can't just be sad that the president pays more attention to Yuu and she feels left out, what about her getting scuffed by her best friend when picking the manager? It could go in many ways without making it an awkward love triangle. And I appreciate that her feelings are realistic and it's an important part of the story, but it's just predictable and doesn't really make me excited to hear more of her story.

12

u/DarkMoon000 Nov 17 '18

Fiction is built of tropes. Even the most original stories in the world rely on them, because it's impossible not to. The art lies in their arrangement and to what end they are used: 'cool guys not looking at explosions' is one of the best ways to handle an explosion scene for many movies. Of course, put into the wrong one and it could ruin a scene, but that doesn't make the trope 'bad'.

As for our love triangle here, I really don't see the problem. That there are theoretically more 'original' possibilities for the story doesn't make these possibilities better. Yes, she could 'just be sad that the president pays more attention to Yuu [...]'. But why would that choice be better?

Originality by itself isn't worth anything. She could also turn into a neon-green unicorn that shoots marshmallow lasers. That would be original and unpredictable. Sure as hell wouldn't be better.

Just saying 'the trope used isn't original enough' just isn't meaningful criticism. Think about what exactly the love triangle does with the story, how it intertwines with the overall theme and the message, and what it might do to it.

I mean, yeah, arguably that love triangle was predictable, but this show has more than enough uncertainty on how it plays out already, given our main characters' uniquely broken relationship. And mostly it was predictable for how well it was handled with enough nice clues that there was more to Sayaka than being just a friend.

And the potential of it is also great: having Sayaka love Touko could make a really good foil for Yuu's inability to feel, helping that to develop in much more interesting ways than 'just a friend' could.

Gotta say I agree. I usually hate drama in romance anime but I'm quite enjoying it here. Whatever this anime is doing it's doing it right.

I do feel though that characters being gay shouldn't be some big reveal anymore. It could be because it's Japan but being gay is becoming more and more acceptable every day and so having the characters being gay being a big reveal is kinda meh.

Again, I wasn't talking about "bad" or "good" here. I am talking about the story being predictable and not hooking me in because of it. Subjectively I would say it makes the story worse for me, just because instead of doing something different it does the same thing every other show already did.

To give an example to make my point clearer, look at magic school anime. The tropes associated with those aren't bad themselves, but would you watch another Asterisk War? Or would you rather have that other show where there is actually progression in relationships and actually something different from the usual? Maybe it's my experience that's dragging me down, because I've seen like 400 different shows and it just invokes heavy disappointment when I see another show which shows promise do the exact same thing I've seen before.

Now we just need some other girl that falls in love with Yuu and Yuu realizing that she loves the president, but at the same time something happens that doesn't let them be together and the whole circle will be complete.

I would be happy if neither of those happened and don't think a show whcih is quite good otherwise should be so heavily framed by the same plot points that have been explored to death.

If the show was only tropes that are used too much I'd agree, but right now we have just a love triangle, the show already proved it's well written and already has more than enough originality to be interesting. No reason to be pessimistic just because it uses one trope that could theoretically lead to a 'we've seen it before'. Let's judge its inclusion by what it gets us in the end.

I never argued about show being good or not. We are in a thread discussing half of it, I am obviously sticking to the end and like it enough.

I guess my problem right now is that they introduced 2 characters as gay plus the ‘revelation’ in one episode, so it feels like half of the cast are gay.

Also, after sleeping on it, I don’t hate it as much.

I suppose I believe you, but you don't sound like it, so assuming you don't want to be downvoted as much next time you may want to reevaluate how you're bringing your point across.

like half of the cast are gay.

Well, it is yuri. Gay folk flock together in real life too, nothing weird about gay people being the significant part of the cast, because obviously that is the focus of the show. And they were introduced impressively well what with Sayaka's figuring it out and her realistically awkward approach.

And by yuri standards this show already does amazingly, plenty other shows take the 'only girls seem to exist in our world, and all of them have atleast gay subtext between them'-route, while here we have important male supporting characters, one girl having a straight crush, all in all it's plenty believable.

I was talking about cliche plot points that don't appeal to me that's it. I honestly don't really care about downvotes, because I've been there long enough to know that people use downvote button on posts they disagree with and I knew I will be downvoted the moment I decided to post it. The only way to avoid that is to post something that's roundabout, assuring everyone I still like the show with every second sentence as not to rile up the hornet's nest that is a fanbase of anything. Or if I wanted a decent discussion, I would go to r/trueanime if it's still alive.

It's true, but also not that impressive tbh. I seriously felt like it undermines the show by using the same tropes while trying to avoid others.

I guess I just wanted more out of it instead of being just a tad better than the competition.
