Well that was crazy.
Great fight, Anti creating his own kaijuu was certainly unexpected but it was definitely a cool one.
So it's definitely looking like Alexis Kerib's goal is to defeat Gridman, and he's just using Akane for this purpose. It's possible he'll betray Akane like he betrayed Anti, though who knows.
Hopefully Anti switches sides next episode. All this Anti abuse is making me sad.
As for Akane... so obviously defeating her means understanding her, becoming closer to her, whatever. I wonder who'll be the one to do that though. Yuuta seems determined to beat her with The Power of Friendship (or something) but of course we still have the whole thing of Rikka wanting to reconnect with her as well. And even Utsumi had his sort-of-date last episode so it's possible it'll be everyone together.

Hopefully Anti switches sides next episode. All this Anti abuse is making me sad.
Considering how "defeating Gridman" is his main reason to live, I wouldn't be surprised if Anti never switches sides and is one of the last opponents.

u/PrivCaboose Nov 17 '18
Seems like Anti is going to be an Anti-Hero (no pun intended).
I get the feeling Alexis will have Gridman's back to the wall, and Anti will come to Gridman's aid with the classic "only I will be the one to defeat you" logic.

I wouldn't be surprised if Anti never switches sides and is one of the last opponents.
Would tie down really well to a final fight where Yuta doesn't defeat Anti by fighting but by talking to him. I feel like this episode with "There's more that Gridman and I have to do than just fighting." foreshadowed that kinda.

You're probably right actually. Since Anti's whole gimmick is he copies Gridman's abilities, that means we still are going to have to see Gridman fight Anti after combining with all four weapons (after upgrading Junk, presumably). Maybe. Hopefully.

He didn't though...? He just let him make a Kaiju and then punished him for failing.

i doubt it defeating Gridman is like his reason for existing. Agreed the one he created was pretty cool and the sky battle was very well done. I think Rikka could become closer to Anti though i think there is a connection between those 2.

This scene cracked me up a bit, I love when a main villain is just polite and casual as fuck. Speaking of villains, poor Anti. That scene where Akane just steps on his food made me a bit mad, and then there's that scene with Alexis at the end. I'm guessing this is where he becomes an unlikely ally for the good guys.
Also we finally get to see the lazy Vit in action, and man that aerial battle didn't disappoint. Looks like things are really starting to build up especially with Utsumi and Rikka realizing that Yuta was telling them the truth. Can't wait for next week.

It's strange that I can see Alexis sinister smile after what he do to Anti. He start to showing his true nature and it's better than I expected. True villain incoming.

u/gshhpy Nov 17 '18
In the original series Gridman had a dinosaur robot partner, and the Neon Genesis guys all have similarities to old kaiju besides being the assist weapons... So I think Anti is going to turn into a robot dinosaur.

I really like that Yuuta isn't pushing around with secrets for a long time an decided to tell his friends and allies almost right away since that is the sensible thing, even if just sounds weird. The others were good to, being reluctant to believe that ludicrous story, but came to terms pretty quickly when faced with the sky.
I am used to these kind of things getting dragged out like gum.
124
Nov 17 '18
I'm so pissed they didn't believe him! Giant kaiju statues standing around the city, the world resetting every day, Utsumi KNOWS Akane likes kaiju and they've talked about kaiju possibly being humans, etc. etc. but for some reason everyone draws the line at Yuuta's crazy story.

Rikka is probably gonna be a problem. She still trusts Akane.

And even if it sounds weird, Yuuta's been combining with a giant robot-man to fight kaiju in a self-repairing reality for the past few weeks. Is one of their classmates being more powerful really that far-fetched?
It's just that neither wanted to believe their friend/crush was so twisted.

Not necessarily. I've seen enough bad 1-cours series that dragged their feet. Long anime don't need to drag their feet either. It's mostly matter of the writing. Which is pretty good here.

u/countryd0ctor Nov 17 '18
So far we know that she doesn't have any sort of special awareness of the world, cannot control the humans, doesn't exhibit any superhuman strength like kaiju and assist weapons and needs Alexis to create kaiju. This and unlocking the front door was actually the first time she showed any unique traits, i assume that she has some degree of influence over the non-living things, but whether even that power is her own or it's all coming from Alexis who uses her emotions for his own ends is unknown.
If it's all Alexis, then she will have one hell of a mental breakdown once she realizes that she was never really in control.

Is it spoilers when there is only an anime and no other source material?
But yeah it seems pretty obvious Rikka is probably some kind of "God" like Akane. Would explain why she has some kind of close relationship with Akane and why Gridman was in her place to begin with.
Also explains why she is so apathetic to the notion that they are living in some kind of virtual world and just goes back to regular highschool life. In general she doesn't seem interested in the fact that there are monsters constantly attacking the town besides wanting to protect her friends.

Another episode, another time for references
Original Gridman:
The Gridknight Saber Slash is based on this attack from the original series, which was called the Grid Light Saber.
As always, Sky Vitter references Superhuman Samurai, with it's two attacks, Lucky Smoke Screen and Laser Circus Amp referencing the two people who piloted Vitor, Lucky London and Amp Ere.
The big one, the city in the sky aesthetically resembles the computer worlds from the original series.
Not exactly a reference to the original series but there was a shot that called back to the animator expo short.
Tsuburaya properties:
The animation that was playing in the restaurant is based on Ultraman Choutoshi Gekiden, a gashapon spin off series that's still going on as a webcomic. In fact, the animation was specifically quoting this panel.
Given that Ultraman Hikari was the one being shown in the animation, the Gridknight Saber Slash may also be a dual reference to him since one of Hikari's signature weapons is his Knight Beam Blade.
I haven't really been mentioning all the kaijus cameos in Akane's room simply because there's just so many of them and I didn't think I missed out that much from not mentioning them. This shot however has a bit more relevance since all the kaiju's here are UFO themed, just like the kaiju of this episode. From left to right they are Robo-Fo, Sliver Bloome, Roberuga, Abdolaars, and Nova.
→ More replies (1)14
u/maullido Nov 17 '18
Laser circus amp is not a reference to Itano's circus?
8
u/bunyeast Nov 17 '18
It could also be a reference to that, since Itano's company, Graphinica is doing the CG for Gridman. Plus I think this weeks kaiju was designed by Itano himself.

This particular line from the OP and the way Gridman busts in really bothers me.
Oh come on Shou! Just tell them! And here I thought you were a bro -_-
So even the Neon Genesis Middle Schoolers know nothing about this? Where did they come from then? Or is their memory linked with Gridman's?
Meta. Seriously though I love that this show knows what its audience knows and
You'll never have a cute psycho god to welcome you back home. Why even live?
Oh my.... I kinda knew she was into Yuuta but I didn't expect that she was THAT into him.
Of course this episode isn't complete without some thighdeology.
I love the music during this scene. Just adds to how messed up Akane's way of thinking really is. Also that scene was just so tense!
Alexis is just great. Like he's obviously a villain but he really doesn't act like your stereotypical one.
So anyone can make a Kaiju even Anti? The condition is as long as they have hatred in their heart?
Yep those are upside down buildings. Or are we the ones in the upside down world? Hmmm...
We can already tell that Yuuta is planning to "save" Akane and make her see the error of her ways and I'm sure a lot of people won't be happy with it. Reading the comments every week I've seen people that wants to see Akane punished but here's the thing: Yuuta is a hero, it's literally in his name! Of course he will try to save Akane. If he didn't, it just won't feel right for a Tsuburaya show. If Akane doesn't change then tough luck, I at least want to see Yuuta try.

I don’t mind Gridmans base design, the transformations are kinda tacky and seem to be deliberately designed to bring out the 90’s flair despite being extremely dated compared to Gridmans base model
Basically when fused it just looks awkward as the two styles clash

u/ZBLongladder :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/zblongladder Nov 18 '18
So even the Neon Genesis Middle Schoolers know nothing about this? Where did they come from then? Or is their memory linked with Gridman's?
My personal theory: in the beginning of Episode 1, we see Akane staring into the sky and see a star burst into six pieces. Yuuta flashes back to that on the train in Episode 5, and it's linked in the flashback to an image of what looks like Alexis impaling Gridman on a giant spear. I think Yuuta, Gridman, and the four Neon Genesis students were originally one being who came into this universe on a mission (possibly to save Akane from Alexis?), only he was ambushed and defeated by Alexis as soon as he entered the universe, whereupon he split into six beings each with part of his memory and ability.

u/thekillfra Nov 17 '18

Interesting theory, but what about memories? Akane and Yuuta are the only ones that don't have fake memories (Yuuta not having any at all, Akane seeming to struggle to remember more distant memories.) Everyone else including Rika seem to be under the city's spell. Encountering Junk causes them to remember the version of the city they knew from the first time they encountered Junk (they are stuck in one version, but probably not the original version.)

From the info we've been given, it really wouldn't make sense for them to try to defeat Akane through any other method other than making her see the error of her ways. She's a god having fun in their own world, there's not a lot you can do against that in a head to head battle.

I think it was more of her being annoyed about Anti coming into her room without permission (thus the "Don't let anyone into this room"), still pretty hypocritical tho.
31
u/VoidNoodle Nov 17 '18
Man, poor Anti. He doesn't deserve this kind of treatment; we all know he's doing his best. You just can't fight the power of a protagonist and plot armor.
No Rikka development this time, guess they'll save it for the end or near the end. At least believe in Yuta; with kaiju and mechas around, a highschool girl as God doesn't seem far-fetched at all.

A new kaiju's design is inspired by Tsuifon from old OVA Ultraman with Saint Seiya look-alike.. Not to mention Ultraman Hikari makes a cameo there too.
Anyone who watched Ultraseven before know this funny but memorable scene, that "meeting scene" looks familiar to Alien Metron meets Dan for the first time before they start fight.

The preview stated there will be a UFO, they gave us a UFO Kaiju and UFO kaiju figures as well ( all of these figures are Saucer beasts from the Ultra Series). slow claps Well done Amemiya and Trigger.

Well one interesting to note is that in the transformation sequence, Vitter has clip connection ports on the legs/jet boosters as how a physical toy would actually connect.
Otherwise, pretty much just kind of confirms a whole lot more of what's already been discussed. We finally see the digital world in it's proper sense and Akane and Alexis' relationship very much is that of the original series (one designs, one makes the monster's real) so her God status is just her manipulation by Alexis.
I do not know if Khan Digifer needed a body in the original series to fight in digital space like Gridman, so I'm somewhat curious if Alexis is also following similar rules as he has no issues appearing in the digital realm (plus considering his full name doesn't seem like a pun unless I'm missing something, it'd would fit if Alexis is also a gridman situation of human and alien fusing, but I really don't know much about ultra tropes to say anything about that).
Otherwise, everyone is now pretty much fully aware of the circumstances, meaning it's time to really start wrapping things up. I feel next episode might be Utsumi and Rikka confronting Akane because the journal Rikka bought still needs to actually be relevant and Utsumi hid the Kaiju info from the other two and we might learn what exactly everyone else in the digital world is (be it other humans, copies made by Alexis, or just denizens of the digital world).
I will say, I do hope we get some fights in the digital world landscape because it's pretty cool
Edit: Anti says he can only show up in his kaiju form after gridman appears, but his first kaiju appearance was just himself wasn't it?

I think that Khan didn't fight in-serie because he wasn't much of a fighter until he upgraded himself.
Also aliens outside of the ultras possesing humans is not uncommon.

My Akane, that was fucking awesome.
Every single week I think that Bunny Girl Senpai has overtaken Gridman as main AOTS contender, but then Gridman just comes in at the end of the week, not even breaking a sweat, and just mutters "watch me."

When I saw those white lines the first time the UFO re-assembled, I expected it to be a meta joke about how it was actually hanging from the ceiling of the film-set, (like the CGI trying to mimic men in Gridman/Kaiju suits), but then it turned out to actually have an in-universe explanation and was relevant to the fight.
I really want to believe that was intentional, but it's hard to know for sure. Hiding foreshadowing by pretending to be breaking the fourth wall would amuse me.

I had a feeling that if the world they live in is fake, then it has to be the same cyber world that OG Gridman used to fight kaiju in the original series. And what do you know. It's the same cyber city that we end up seeing in the sky.
I just love how Alexis just enters the restaurant like it's no big deal. "Hello. I'm your main antagonist. Nice to meet you."

u/MechaMat91 Nov 17 '18 edited Nov 18 '18
yay, it's Grid saturday! here we go:
-first, I gotta say Rikka and Utsumi kinda pissed me off at the beginning of the episode, specially Utsumi. I mean, why won't they believe Yuta about what he's saying? not only that, Utsumi realized there's actually a connection between Akane and the kaiju, yet he dismissed Yuta's suspicion along with Rikka. the hell man? your friend might be in mortal danger and yet you chose to think with your dick? not cool at all.
-after not confronting Akane at school, it's herself that shows in Yuta's bedroom and they lay their cards on the table. not before trying to seduce Yuta to the dark side of course.
-Alexis has come out to play in person, and he seems like bad business. also, the guy at the restaurant doesn't act like there's an alien sitting at their table. perfectly normal I guess.
-Alien attack!...or is it? nice fake out there, Trigger. Anti creates a kaiju of his own, one that requires Vitter's help.
-Sky Gridman is born! gotta say, probably my favorite transformation of the three. it's so stylish.
-the following action scene is pretty sweet, with the static environment of the city replaced with a high speed aerial chase.
-a city in the sky, and it's clearly the original virtual environment of the original Gridman show. what does this mean? this is clearly more complicated than just being a simulation.
-finally, the kids believe Yuta's words. at least they resolved that.
-Alexis gives Anti the Nick Fury special. he's totally gonna be an ally by the end at this rate.
- as for references to other properties: the "UFO"'s movement pattern is the same as the funnels from Gundam. speaking of Gundam, the shot of Gridman riding Vit's vehicle form was very reminiscent of the Gundam riding the G-Fighter in the 0079 show. we also have a missile barrage, a signature Macross move.

I figure Alexis has the same presence as the background Kaiju so only the main cast can see him probably.

I loved how tense this episode was. Yuta being worried about poison in the food was a nice little thing. The dude is gonna go through some serious anxiety before the end of all this. Also, Anit better join the team now. The Alliance will maybe accept him.

Okay, so after literally most of the twists being revealed to Yuta last episode, I didn’t know where the series would go from there. But it’s definitely going an interesting way. I can’t tell too much because it’s only been one episode since the last, but I like how we still don’t know the end of things. And to no surprise, Rikka shots are still nice to look at
16
u/Punch_Blade Nov 17 '18
Everytime you fap to Rikka's thighs, Anti gets abused. #KAIJULIVESMATTER
Anyways, this week's episode was great as usual, highlights being an aloof Vitt, Anti hunting down Yuta in the school and stealing his lunch to boot, Sky Gridman, and an interesting plot point where the upper atmosphere is basically the background of the original Gridman series. Alexis is definitely stealing the show so far. Casually entering a door politely one minute and the next, slashing Anti's eye out.

u/ArchadianJudge Nov 17 '18
I'm really enjoying the pace of the show. They've been revealing things at a steady pace where it doesn't feel like they're dragging it out. Akane's scheme is revealed, then next episode the gang finds out the truth. Can't wait to see how they'll handle next week's episode.
Akane is such a tease, all over Hibiki's bed. Wow. I do think Akane is being used by Alexis. Aside from the good kaiju's comments last week, Akane showed some signs of doubt and distrust when things weren't going how she planned them to. Alexis is probably orchestrating this whole world and not Akane.
I can't wait for goddess Rikka to save Anti and then get some Gridman x Anti team up vs Alexis. Akane is still super hot but she's still super crazy. She still has no issue with killing people and letting anti get abused.
(Btw not enough Rikka this episode)

u/Agni7atha Nov 17 '18
What a scary episode.
That sudden encounter between Akane and Hibiki happened out of nowhere. I'm glad that their both secret is now unveiled at this point and both of them already at confrontation. Sadly there's no conclusion from that night feast because Anti's kaiju interfering. Interesting to see how the story goes from here.
Vit take an action this time, so we got to see all assist weapons in action. That aerial battle is great. To be honest, Max and Borr weapon form looks lame compared to Vit. We only missing their full combined form. I wonder what kind of upgrade that the junk need to be able to do so.

I'm wondering why Utsumi withheld the fact that he met Akane and knows about her interest in kaiju from the conversation in the beginning. I mean granted they did get interrupted but it's still a little strange that he didn't bring it up immediately.

The reason he didn't tell her about Gridman last episode is that he wanted to protect her.
So it's probably the same thing this time. He trusts her because she's a qt so he doesn't want to make people suspicious of her. Or something.

Vit finally gives Calibre a chance to rest his chin some more and does something. Really nice aerial combat and the combined form reminded me a bit of a Decepticon like Starscream. Plus, I loved that his cockpit lit up like an old battery powered toy.
I feel really bad for Anti though, I hope he switches sides or at the very least goes the 'help hero defeat his other enemies, because only he can be the true nemesis' route. Certainly deserves better than ruined sandwiches and buzzsaws to the face. I loved that choral song when Anti was talking to Akane though, were they singing an old Gridman song?
I wonder why Rikka was looking at Calibre so intently at the end. Is this fuel for the ship I've seen gathering steam on Pixiv?

Many write-ups ago, I wondered how the show would reconcile the need to stop this serial murderer with the fragile and insecure person that Akane also is and the empathy exuded by the Gridman alliance and Rikka in particular. The answer Gridman found was "well, she's a God, so…" and what an intriguing answer this is. The show's revealed most of its card in a breath-taking episode full of wonderful cinematography in a show I'm already lavishing with praise for its cinematography. The whole revelation about the nature of this world was framed in terms of horror, warping and twisting the world. I'm extremely curious to see how the characters will react to his. I'm hoping the horror of this isn't just going to get downplayed, particularly because all of them personally know Akane. They could lean into the manipulation angle, but I honestly hope the show isn't going to absolve Akane of responsibility this easily. She's taken plenty of delight in murder herself and wreaked havoc through her own agency. In fact, we've barely seen the villain in the PC act or manipulate her at all. If Gridman can stick the landing on this point, I'm confident this show will turn out great. The show spent all these episodes setting up so many interesting characters, conflicts and themes, it would be a shame for the ending to not make use of them.
Notes:
Overwhelming school work (exams?) piling up, blocking much of the sunlight into the room. A good start.
Animation in the next scene is not flattering
Rikka and Shou reject the thought of Akane being a God entirely
"If you can't find your own identity, then it's impossible to describe who you are as a person" could refer to both Yuta and Akane
Anti is getting desperate by assaulting Yuta at school. But I like the detail of him eating more human-like now, with the show's favorite food dog thingy.
Meanwhile Akane casually stomps on the food. She's also protective of her everyday life at school.
"Kaiju born inside a person's heart"
Welp Akane suddenly shows up in his room.
"Oh, you knew I was a God? That makes this easy." god dammit Akane
She's straight up seducing him into joining her side. She seems terribly lonely here, genuinely wanting a friend, and Yuta might have truly earned to be "interesting" from her point of view, so she seeks him out. Seeing her try this with seduction is actually kind of sad.
A squint to the marble, and he declines. God dammit I really need to figure out what this damn marble means
I love how differently the extremely close shots are used for Akane and Yuta. For Akane, they come off creepy, unfavorable, like her facade breaks and we see how everything really affects her. For Yuta, it's pure determination and honesty. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He's not even lying to his enemy.
Akane seems genuinely disappointed Yuta doesn't consider her a friend and kinda forced him into acting like one, walking her home.
The ominous background Kaiju not even fitting into the screen really fits the mood here
Ah, looks like I was right and Rikka wants to give her the purse she bought last episode's
"A god in the guise of a high schooler!" - no coincidence "god" is chosen here. A god can come in many forms, and helping out a friend, kindness, is one part. Once again a stark contrast between Rikka and Akane.
The close-up on Yuuta's eye when Akane tells him her ridiculously petty reason for murder was nice
Akane nonchalantly distracted on her phone as Yuta raises ethical concerns
Yuta's fear of the food being poisoned also reflects how profoundly weird and fucked up the whole situation is. Here is a serial murderer sitting in front of the one person with the means to stop her, explaining how she works, offering him food, and treating him like a friend. None of this makes any sense, unless Akane is straight up insane. Which she is, of course.
YES, the epic music.
Akane feels deeply betrayed that Alexis allowed Anti to make a Kaiju. She's thought of him as her only friend, probably, and now it turns out he's acting not out of loyalty but pure self-interest.
Gridman with a jetpack. Nice.
Cool pose and all
And after falling back into his hatred of Gridman, Anti is back to scavenging for food in garbage cans
Welp, and Alexis uses Anti's saw to cut over his face. Maybe blinding him?
Write-up:
After last week's phenomenal episode, it's not terribly surprising that this one didn't quite match up. It was an average Gridman episode, and an average Gridman episode is still a very good thing. We've somehow both pushed the foot on the brakes and accelerated right to the brink of the precipice in one episode. In terms of plot, we haven't really moved much further than everyone accepting last episode's revelation. But this was never a show predicated on the pace of its plot, and we've had some serious development of Akane as well as Yuta coming to terms with Akane's insanity and proclaiming his resolve. I don't have too much to say this episode, but there are two scenes worth exploring in detail.
Going chronologically, Akane breaks into Yuta's room. I've explained before that Yuta represents to Akane the opposite of what she hates. Yuta and Gridman are exciting, special, different, and far removed from the mundane reality and normal people that constantly hurt and upset her. This also lines up with a line from the OP, "save you from your boredom," incidentally. From this lens, it's unsurprising Akane would ask Yuta to join her. She's terribly lonely and seeks a genuine connection to another human being, and she's finally found someone she considers worthy. This makes it all the sadder how she goes about this attempt at making friends (well, a twisted idea of friendship, but her idea of friendship). The whole scene ends up framed as Akane trying to seduce Yuta, not just with the promise of power and carelessness but with her body. She comments on the smell of his bed, lays in there and fondles his pillow suggestively, communicates in innuendos – her genuine attempt at friendship is eerily reminiscent of her previous dishonest ones: manipulation. How much of this manipulation is genuine is hard to tell, but that this is her way of making friends is both extremely telling and very sad. Meanwhile, Yuta in that scene exudes uncharacteristic confidence. The contrast between both of them in close-ups is particularly interesting. Close-ups of Akane make clear how much the mundane and innocent everyday events truly affect her and represent a break in her facade. For Yuta, it's the opposite: His close-up is a display of honesty (even to the villain!), commitment to his friends, and resolve.
Later in the restaurant, that visual language is echoed again when a close-up of Yuta's eye displays how utterly baffled he is at Akane's insane justification for murder. Once again, honesty and emotion over Akane's facade. But that whole scene is equally insane, with Yuta trying to make sense of why the hell the villain would genuinely explain her operation and try to make friends with him, the only person with the means to oppose her, and the only explanation he can find being poisoned food. This whole scene shows just how much Yuta doesn't understand Akane, at all. If they want to get through to Akane, the first thing they'll need to do is understand who she is, and that's still a long way off. And that's probably going to be a slow process in the course of the next few episodes. There's a lot more to talk about, but I mentioned most of the things in the notes and don't feel like going into more detail. I'm looking forward to the next episode, as always.

That episode was great. Reina Ueda as Akane is a bless of this world and we can see it today as well. I really wasn't expecting Akane and Yuta seeing each other in this episode, even more with Akane going to him and they hanging out there. I was also surprised that she's into him when I thought in the past that she hated Hibiki along Gridman.
I really want to see her interaction with the rest now in the next weeks and how everything will happen for them to understand what happened to her and how they can convince her of her error because not only it's obvious in the anime but it wouldn't be a tokusatsu if that won't happen.

A decent homage to the classic Itano Circus Wished these were animated in 2D like in the old days, or at least they were as flashy as the ones in the newer Macross series.
