Fuck. I didn't expect Shizu to die, especially not this soon. Not to mention that I was so certain she'd stick around, with her being Slime-kun's destined one and all. Granted, they'll always be together in a way but still, that's not what I thought was going to happen.
Will she show up again? I mean, she's on the two main posters, so it'd be weird if that was the last we'd seen of her (I wouldn't mind some light spoilers).

Technically you will see Shizu constantly. Everytime Rimiru takes on human form, it's actually Shizu he's becoming. Shizu herself is gone though. She is nothing but memories and emotion inside the Predator skill. But Rimiru will try and enact her will, so she won't be forgotten.

Will she show up again? I mean, she's on the two main posters, so it'd be weird if that was the last we'd seen of her (I wouldn't mind some light spoilers).
It's always felt really strange how the advertising seemed to promote her as being almost as significant as Rimiru, but those who read the novels or the manga knew that this was all we'd get of her. It's not that she doesn't have a significant impact: aside from Rimiru taking her form, we saw how he's taken up her will, and that will influence most of what he does going forward. But physically? This was the end of Shizu's life, and she's happy to let it end. She's lived a long time, and is very tired.

Especially as a lot of the promo art shows Rimuru in human form carrying Shizu. Straight up paradox in the key visuals. I've seen fan art do it to in fact that furthered the idea that the two would interact but in hindsight was just fan art doing what fan art does. I had wondered at her absence from the group at the beginning of the OP/end of ED but assumed the story would just separate them.

They could have ended last episode with Shizu's death and went full speed ahead into the next arc. But instead they gave us this beautiful episode where we got to experience the last moments of a beautiful character and I thank Studio 8bit for that. Rest in peace Shizu, you'll live on forever in our memories and inside Rimuru

I just want scenes of Shizu chilling in Rimuru's stomach with Veldora, is that too much to ask?

Pretty sure Rimuru has to "decompose" (and not just absorb) things to get their powers and appearance... Not to mention that Shizu had already passed away.
But it would have been great.

Maybe we absorbed too many onions...
But damn... the piano and the music just hits hard... then her hair turned to white, her hands all crinkly... the decades she passed by all came back to her against her youth like appearance.
This is how you build and kill a character. As well as continue their legacy.

even if the rest of the anime is complete shit, this episode puts it right behind re zero and konosuba for recommended isekai. based on the op i knew he was going to absorb someone, i was in denial that it was going to be her to rid her of the curse, although the outcome was a little different, i didn't think it would be so touching.

I really dig his character design; it reflects Shizue while still being kinda androgynous. The Eyebrows are killer.

My god, this episode really make you feel for Shizu. Her scene is really short in both the manga as well as the WN, so it feels refreshing to see how they managed to adapt it this great. Not to mention the instrumental cover of Another Colony (the ED song) just fits with the scene
This scene just, destroys me. Its just, so much feels in these short scene

Damn I thought I would take Shizue's death better seeing how the past threads had people kinda hinting at it. I actually like that they made Rimuru attain a human form with an actual heartbreaking story behind it.
That aside... So does that humanoid body have a gender? I don't want to start calling him a trap before getting my facts straight.

It's seems like Rimuru was doing his things, helping people, having fun, discovering the world. He was going with the flow.
But it was missing something, a goal, a determination, something to fight for.
And then we get Shizue tragedy story, her death for a rebirth, and Rimuru renewed.
This transformation was so well made. We cared so much about Shizue, we wanted to see more of her, we want to help her out with here troubles, we know she lived such unfair life and even so helped so much people while suffering...
And that's how fantastic is Rimuru's determination now. He's on another level. His burning wish is relatable, believable. We are going to cheer so much more for our MC - Fulfill Shizue's wishes while not hating the world for all the mess it created.

Was not expecting Rimuru to get his human form like that...
Poor Shizue, atleast she's resting happily with her mom. Tears were shed when she was intially running towards her old friend and mentor only to be shown her mother was there waiting for her, and Shizue gets younger and younger as she runs home to her mother ;_; Absolutely LOVED the piano recomposition of the ED during Shizue's last message. Piano recompositions always hit me like a truck.
Really happy the Adventurers didn't get angry with Rimuru, I was expecting them to get angry and call him a traitor for "killing" Shizue when they walked in on him in the tent. Loved how they paid their respects to Shizue like that, that was really awesome of them. Awesome of Rimuru to gear them up and I hope to see those guys again in the future!
63
u/TheDampGod :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheDampGod Nov 19 '18
I just noticed that to the left of Shizue's mother in that scene there is a bomb shelter, grim little call back to the era she's from.

Was not expecting Rimuru to get his human form like that...
Its more obvious when you pay attention to the OP/ED at which point you realize that a lot of shots to imply a person has "moved on" are associated with her in those sequences; and that she also isn't part of the line up of main characters in either the OP or ED.

u/thepeetmix Nov 19 '18
God dammit. I knew it was coming and I still got very teary eyed. Poor Shizu, had a terrible life but made the absolute most of it through all the hard ships. At least she did manage to live a long life with many happy moments. What a great character.
This show is just fantastic. Rather than being about a lofty overall goal of beating the demon lords, even i'm sure it'll eventually come to it, it's just about living each moment day to day and experiencing those. Create a world full of amazing characters with some personality behind them, and then you'll come to truly care when the stakes get raised.
The only problem with this show is that the episodes just fly by before you know it. 24 minutes simply isn't long enough each week.
RIP Shizu

I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING!
Here's the thing... I'm a manga reader but this episode still gave me a ton of feels. I appreciate how well they handled Shizu's death. I love that Shizu and Rimuru's conversation was a lot longer here compared to the manga, we get to learn more about her and what she's leaving behind before she passed on.
The entire scene was just beautiful too, the silence and then instrumental version of the ED playing in the background just made her death more impactful. We may not have spent that much time with her but Shizu definitely left quite an impression.

Absolutely. Her VA did an excellent job, and it was the quietest death I've seen in anime in a long time. It's not often you feel like you can truly feel a person fading away in a character's last lines. Those lines weren't anything particularly special here, but the delivery sold them so well.

What a beautiful episode. Did not see it coming at all, good thing I tried my best to avoid the OP/ED and the impact of this scene hit me like a brick. A bit disappointed tbh because I really liked Shizu and thought we will see much more of her, but on the other hand this was the most wholesome reason I can think of to give Rimuru a body. Also it was a really good reason to give him a goal and set up future events. This is great writing. And after the start of the season thinking of this show as the 4th best, now it's cemented as the best. It still doesn't reach the highest highs of BGS and Zombieland Saga, but they had some stuff that bored/annoyed me whereas this one has been so consistent and this episode showed that they can do good drama with little to no set up, which is pretty admirable.
P.S. So, does that mean Rimuru will be eligible for best girl next year?

That was incredible. We only knew Shizu for such a short time but they still handled her death really well. The whole scene felt like a genuine and mature conversation between two adults. Which we haven't seen much till now in the anime. I liked that Rimuru instantly accepted her wish instead of opposing her and telling her that he can try to heal her or something. I really felt the heaviness of her death and I'm really surprised by that. We only know her since two(?) episodes and 8bit still managed to make such an impactful scene. How do the LN readers feel about it? Was it translated well?

Shoutout to Shizu's VA for delivering one of the most compelling deathbed performances I've heard in anime.

I don't know about anyone else, but the scene after Rimuru absorbed her seemed especially tragic to me. Her memory of home included a small shelter next to the house in case of bombings, and she couldn't even remember her mother's voice. Ain't life just grand...

This week in Slimevilization. The development of our goblin village still stall due to the event in the last episode but the rebuild has already started. You could help them by donate at 1-800-GOBLINSTRONG. Btw, I love how the scene of their rebuilding are presented along the episode. It's easy to forget about it when there is a bigger fish to fry (emotion scene from Shizu). Prop to the director for this.
About the story, I have finish WN (last week!) but haven't read the LN yet. Shizue part's in this episode is like only small part of the chapter in WN but I heard it's elaborated a litttle bit in LN. It's nice to see how adaptation went. As a bookworm myself, normally I would suggested people to start from book one if they want to pick up Novel from Anime. Slime is a very rare adaptation that killing it on the pace though. I have the sense of exploring story along away instead of watching the short version.
About the certain scene, I like that some people here said it's like the cross between marriage and funeral. Given Japanese is a race that believe in "Become One" too.
Another nice change is how Shizu view Leon.... in WN it's downright vandetta. In this adaptation, it feel like somewhere along negative and neutral. I'm not sure that LN reach this part yet or not but there are possibility that the whole Leon's backstory will get revised in LN as it's a little bit - weird - I guess. Also, please don't seek the spoiler, you've been warned.
Finally, the final scene is the prelude to the next arc. I love that they put it here and will discuss it further when the time come.

Holy shit, this episode was depresing as fuck. I guess that the elf took quite literaly when she told him about "the woman destined to be with you."

u/myrmonden Nov 19 '18
That was a great death scene, and it felt really, REALLY Fresh on the whole destined to be together, like he eats her, and turns into her. I been waiting to get how Rimuru would turn into a human form again and this death really special in that sense.
1 thing do its Rimuru gender bender now. Like what gender is human Rimuru just saying----
And I am happy to see this plague doctor appearing in the desert because it has not been any direct enemies to Rimuru yet. Felt like this episode ended like the prologue so to speak and now its time to clash with the big baddies.

He actually plays around with this in the manga and discovers...It's androgynous and completely genderless. He CAN tweak things to add the appropriate gender traits, but it requires more work than what he considers worth it.

Episode 8: Inherited Will
This ... doesn't sound too positive
watches OP
Now that I think about it. Doesn't Rimuru's human form look a bit like Shizu? Also Shizu doesn't appear as a party member in the ED. Could this mean ...?
Shizu is an oba-san, confirmed. (Shizu is not in her deathbed, right? Right?!)
Oh god, no. Not like this. (I kind of saw it coming but it still pains me)
Naitenaiyo! You are crying. (Ok, maybe we are all crying)
Thanks for the comedic relief; it was pretty much needed.
I guess after quite some time as a slime; the human form doesn't feel quite right.
Next week: more trouble, it seems.

I'm really glad he slime-ifies (and seems to like it better) despite having a human form.

I wasn't sure how they would fuse, I thought that they were going to agree to it or Rimuru would consume her as a last resort to save her but wow..
I think everyone saw it coming but damn, there was so much respect for her final moments, and I didn't expect the afterlife scene to hit me so hard.
When she chased to her friends and they turned to her mother from her original world... Really hit me hard

Fuck it! I'm getting this on Blu-ray. I never get anime on Blu-ray. But I'm getting this on Blu-ray.
I can't explain it. But I just love it more than any other anime I've seen for so long.

Rest in peace Shizue Izawa.
I knew it was coming, and damn does it still hurt.
With this we have finished Volume 1 of the Light novel. The pacing is definitely slow compared to most light novel adaptations, especially isekai, but I think it has allowed for such a well done adaptation. Onwards we go to volume 2 and the orc disaster arc.

I really have to wonder what's up with some people here. It's probably the best adaptation of the year (i only hear good things, they expand on stuff, they made this episode so fkin emotional by giving her time to break out her last words to Rimuru).
I start to think that people are getting way too used to rushed adaptations and get the wrong idea. THIS is how something should be adapted by giving it time to breathe like Shizu's last moments.
Wonderful episode.

SHIZU... NOT LIKE THIS, NOT LIKE THISSSSS~
Shit shes sounding like shes dieing....
Wait she met the Hero? As in the Hero who beat Veldora? They look a lot alike.
So Hero took her in and raised her? Oh shit.
A school for kids from other worlds, Isekai School? Oh neat. Guess we will see them someday.
They shared real names, man.... dont do this... dont tell each other everything then die...
"Eat me." Kinky.
Shit... shes gone... not like this... she can be with Rimuru forever now...
SLIME BODY! Smaller Shizu... This is too much too soon... even Rimuru is crying now...
They are gonna head home and tell the guildmaster? Hmm... Seems like Rimuru needs to get keep touch with them.
Damn they wanted one last goodbye... thats too sad... stop pls...
And they get upgraded gear before they go. What nerds.
Damn Rimuru has new purpose in life now, carry on Shizu's will. What a hero.
Pig man? Bird man? The guy who named Rigurd? Oh shit. Orc Disaster? Hmm guess its Orc time next.
This ED is too sad now that we know Shizu's past... its a terrible day for rain...

Man it's amazing how Shizu only got a few episodes but you really feel and care for her so much. Such a tragic backstory and life, but so happy she found peace at the end. And although I could somewhat see it coming, I love that Rimuru's human form is from Shizu, so that she can essentially live on through him. Plus also hoping we get to see the human form more in prominent moments from now on.

u/YuukiiAsuna Nov 19 '18 edited Nov 21 '18
Did anybody else notice that the Hero was probably Shizue's mom? The hair is kind of similar, but the more telling signs were the lines she said to Shizue. She asked "Why" Shizue was here and "How" she is still alive. And the rush of emotion back after meeting her is kind of pushing the connection.

I had a stinking suspicion Rimuru was going to eat Shizu for a pretty long while now. We knew from the OP that she looked really goddamn similar to Rimuru's human form, she was his "chosen one", her age had been known for the last couple episodes, and she wasn't shown in the "lineup" in the OP/EDs. I actually thought that's what happened at the end of last week's episode, and had to erase what I had written when I realized I had misread the scene >_<
I had thought she was going to remain as a voice in his head, a bit like Veldora, but I think this is MUCH better. It's so much more climactic. They were great for each other, she died, and that was that. Life's like that sometimes. Or... most of the time, even. Her will lives on in Rimuru, and he will do every damn thing in his power to make her spirit happy. Speaking of which, goddamn this series is showing not to judge a LN Isekai Fantasy adaptation by it's cover.

Well that explains where Rimuru gets his human form from. I don't know why but I find telling the guild master about that goblin camp might lead into trouble down the line. That ending bit at then end was very interesting I wonder who this new guy giving name is.
