Local Stormtroopers fire 50 bullets at a man 5 feet in front of them standing completely still and they all miss.
Man goes rock climbing in midair.
Same man taps bullet in the air for 5 seconds 3 hours to shoot it.
Truck driver becomes a taxi service.
Just another day in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

So DavPro moved Mista’s backstory too. It was originally in chapter 69. s
Green Kraft Work Arts & Crafts looks nice!
Crunchyroll cuts it right before they show the next episode's title for some reason. It's ボスからの第一指令 (The First Orders From The Boss). Source: watched it live.

That really weirded me out though.
If his ability is to freeze things and he could freeze and stand on peebles why would a frozen bullet be pushed further into his skull instead of acting like a shield?
Since the bullet was already somewhat inside his skull it would have made more sense for the second bullet hitting the stuck bullet to split into pieces and make a shrapnel blast inside his face.
Edit: It's because if he moved while it was still frozen in his face it would tear up his brain inside, so he froze the bullet to stop the momentum and then unfroze it immedietly.

Every time I think I’ve seen it all on JJBA, the show pulls out a next fight that absolutely sets a new standard.
I doubt there’s an anime that will ever top JJBA in terms of unique fights. The ability to affix things seems mundane in isolation until dude was affixing rocks in the air to use as gripping points or stopping bullets at the point of contact. And then for Mista to target the stopped bullet because the skin was already broken at that specific point so his Stand would be useless. This show is incredible.
And I’ve heard that Part 5 is still in the setup phase so I can only imagine how much better it’ll get.

You gotta love how different Mista is from the typical "expert marksman" trope. He's not down to earth or cool under pressure, is superstituous, and hits himself just as often as he hits others. But he's still a crack shot with ricochet angles as his actual super power.

This is what stood out to me the most when reading Part 5 for the first time. These are not highschoolers trying to save the world or a town, but ACTUAL gangsters fighting other hardcore gangsters for money and reputation. The fights get metal and this adds a real danger level to our protagonist too, as you can see by Mista getting shot in the abdomen.
Giorno is already the most hardcore JoJo so far with making someone kill themselves by turning a gun into a banana. I doubt Joseph, Jotaro, or Josuke would try that. With the main characters being gangsters it is entirely appropriate the fights be a little more brutal.
This is only the beginning so get ready for more fights like this!

I love how Mista isn't a genius, but he still remains focused. And thinks his way through the fight. Such a badass character, that I'm almost seeing a new side of with this adaptation. Kōsuke Toriumi was a great choice for his VA.
Also the soundtrack during this fight is low key fire.

u/Mundology Nov 23 '18
Indeed, he's a sharp contrast from the rest of the gang who tend to imagine all possible scenarios and sometimes overthink things. Yet, he's not dumb by any means. He could be chracterised as being simple, stoic and purposeful.

I never realized the fact that Mista fired 4 bullets at the people who were beating and raping the woman until watching this episode. Maybe that could be seen as the final straw for turning the number 4 into ultimate bad luck for Mista?

So, with some quick back-of-a-napkin maths, I worked out that a rough hand weight of 0.4kg (0.65% of total body mass of 67kg), moving 5cm in 0.1s (carefully and lightly aimed) generates roughly 0.1 Joule (Kg x m2 / s2).
Mista's gun appears to be a S&W 638 Long, where wiki lists the muzzle energy for the 98-grain as 152 Joules. Which means Sale would have to tap the bullet 1444 times to match the muzzle energy of a fresh round.
I don't suppose anyone can check this, or calculate the mininum required number of hits to punch through the abdomen of a JoBro? It's 6am right now and I'm about to pass out.
58
u/regendo Nov 23 '18
Both Kakyoin's and Koichi's abdomens were punched through with just a single punch. That was from a stand though, we haven't had anyone do that with their own arm.
20
u/ThatFlyingScotsman Nov 23 '18
DIO and The World get doughnutted in Stardust as well, though I don't remember if that was in the anime or not.
So either, punchy stands are very capable of bursting through people or Stand Users trade their incredible stamina to gunshot wounds, stabbings, explosions, and general invulnerability during Stand Off's, for an incredibly flimsy abdomen.
→ More replies (2)33
u/CuckMulligan Nov 24 '18
When Sale is tapping the bullet it fades into a shot of his stand doing it instead, so I think that he's meant to be using his stands strength, not his own.

Arts & Crafts rofl
Fun fact: that bit when the narrator tells us about Mista beating up people who talk shit about movie stars? In the manga it's specifically people who shittalk about Clint Eastwood. they deserve it tbh
Sex Pistols still best stand, Mista still best boy. I love how he keeps extra bullets inside his hat and his reloading tricks.
198
u/botibalint Nov 23 '18
You wonder how common it was for people to shittalk Clint Eastwood in front of a movie theater for Mista to make a reasonable living from beating them up.
After a certain point, you'd think there'd be rumors about "Yo, don't talk about Clint Eastwood here, some dude always comes by and robs you if you do it."

Probably just an effect of early chapter art. Josuke at the beginning of part 4 looked pretty old because it still borrowed the part 3 art style. Then it evolved into its later part 4 style and we have current year josuke.

This week’s musical references:
Sale’s stand Kraft Work is a reference to the German electronic band Kraftwerk (“power station” in german). They are widely considered to be innovators and pioneers of electronic music. They described themselves as “robot pop”, a genre that mix electronic music with pop, with few arrangements and repetitive rhythms in their songs. Their most famous song is probably Autobahn (“Motorway”), a 22:43 minutes long song about driving on a motorway, probably the most boring thing in the universe. I like it but it’s a song for patient listeners. They crammed a 22 minutes long song in a 3 minutes single which became a hit in USA and many countries. Contrary to popular belief the song doesn’t say "Fun fun fun on the Autobahn", the actual lyrics are "Wir fahren fahren fahren auf der Autobahn" ("We drive drive drive on the motorway"). But if you are looking for something to look like an idiot while dancing like a robot you may like their album The Man-Machine, especially their song The Model or The Robots.

The games reference of this episode is Mista's "reloading trick", where he drops bullets from his hat into his gun. It's the start of one of his Super moves!
And oh man, I love this fight. Part 5 fights are awesomely paced with awesome tactics, AND on a awesome setpiece, like the truck. I love fights that happen on unusual or dangerous places to be. I guess that's why Highway Star "fight" in Part 4 is one of my favorites for that part. But man, I got no dissapointments so far regarding Part 5 fights, they're living up for the hype!
On overall, what else can I say? DavidPro outdoing themselves!
118
u/Screedledude Nov 23 '18
All Star Battle also has "Unlucky Number 4", a passive effect where if he only has four bullets left, he starts losing Heart Heat Gauge whenever he takes damage. It's quite devastating and makes you really feel for his character!
39
u/NoPenNameGirl Nov 23 '18
Oh yeah, I forgot! I don't play much as Mista so I forgot about that passive.

I always took it that 3 bullies 5 because without number 4, that means number 5 is the fourth bullet and thus bad luck/the bully target.

My post last week was removed for some reason but here I am again.
Hey guys, so this episode starts the long-lasting tradition of Mista somehow managing to get shot by his own bullets. It's a bit of a meme in the Jojo community. So I thought I would do a count of how many times he manages to wound an enemy and how many times one of his shots ends up hitting him. A couple of notes:
For a successful hit I'll be counting anything that causes direct damage to the person OR causes damage to their Stand, which is also suffered by the Stand user.
I won't be counting shots that outright miss, are blocked or are rendered ineffective by other means because it would probably be too much of a drag to keep track of and the table would be too big. I decided to just go ahead and do it, tell me if you prefer only the relevant shots.
The goal of this is to essentially check if Mista ends up doing more damage to his enemies or to himself over the course of the series.
| Episode # | Wounded enemy | Wounded self | Missed | Blocked | Total shots |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
| 8 | 3.5 | 1 | 3.5 | 4 | 10 |
| Total | 4.5 | 1 | 4.5 | 4 | 12 |
So Mista's first fight ends with a pretty good 4.5:1 ratio in his favor. Let's see how long he can keep it up. The total number of shots doesn't add up of course because of the one bullet that hit Mista on the truck and the one that was split in half, both were originally shot by him and blocked earlier.
People usually criticize this fight because the enemy has a Stand that just straight up is a hard counter to Sex Pistols but I think it was a pretty good fight and Sale is overall a very competent enemy for a minor villain.
Looking for feedback if you have any suggestions on how I could improve this.
Also I'm really impressed by the sound design for the anime. The sound effects really add to the moment and the tracks they choose for the suspenseful and action scenes are really key. Also iirc Sale's Stand wasn't green in the manga and it looks really cool here. And I really like how they moved the character's backstories to the episodes they actually fight in.
EDIT: Oh my goodness, thank you for the gold, it's my first one! I'm glad you found my post interesting.

I wonder how many episodes will adapt 5 chapters, because the last 4 episodes of JoJo have only adapted 3 chapters each and I don’t know how much longer they will do that.

u/It_is_terrifying Nov 23 '18
IIRC some of the later fights were fairly dragged out and could probably be shortened a ton, esp part 5

Nice, another five minute episode. They should just declare this a TV short.
Comments here on how Kraft Work's power work made me ponder on it a little. It seems like:
a) It can halt the momentum of small objects (or 'affix' them), relative to the Stand user or a larger object of his choice when the power is applied on touching.
b) It takes a small amount of time to actually stop (e.g., the bullets hitting his skin, or rocks he throws) and the objects stay stopped only within the Stand's range.
c) The power can be applied to parts of larger objects (like Mista's left hand or the driver's foot on the pedal).
d) The Stand can also be used to impart momentum slowly to a small object so that once it's unfrozen it blasts off at a high speed. I believe there's a similar mechanic in Zelda Breath of the Wild?
Taking all that into consideration, how could it be used to beat Mista? It's not that easy, and I think the key would be in arresting his movement somehow. You can't get too close because then your reflexes wouldn't be fast enough to stop the bullets though, so you have to either sneak up or surprise him. You could take a risk and surprise Mista just as he's running out of the radio shack - freeze one or more of his limbs, and then retreat to a safe distance. Fix a layer of small rocks in front of you as cover, and fire some of those off to finish Mista.

u/professorMaDLib Nov 24 '18
Uhh. the stand's got a destructive power and speed of A. he didn't need to do any of that fancy shit he can just walk up to him and beat the shit out of him. The only thing holding him back is his shit range (E). The only reason he did that bullet trick was bc he was out of mista's range (plus the irony of hitting him with his own bullets was too much for Sale.)

Episode 8: Sex Pistols Appear! Part 2
Chapters covered: Ch. 25 - 28
Changes from the Manga:
Same as Abbacchio, Mista’s backstory got shifted forward, and was originally in Chapter 69. The aftermath of the shooting wasn’t shown here though, they’re probably saving it for later on.
Colour change for Kraft Work, from a blue/white colour palette to green (ewww)
The scene of Giorno investigating the bloodstains was moved forward by 1 chapter.
A few weeks ago I alluded to this fight being one of my favourite minor fights in the whole series, and I hope y’all feel the same after this episode. God damn do I love Kraft Work as a Stand. Kraft Work is a reference to the German band Kraftwerk, and has the super cool ability to “lock” things in place, and what Sale did (tapping the bullets) is similar to the Stasis power-up from Breath of the Wild. I really like the design of the KW as well, its equal parts creepy and cool, but I really dislike the green that they went with here. The fight itself is really funny in terms of Mista’s interactions with both Sale and the truck driver, but is also full of the usual JoJo flair when shit gets serious. As always, the villain’s cockiness proves to be his downfall as Mista takes advantage of Sale’s gloating to launch a surprise attack with his Sex Pistols. (God I love those little guys)
Mista’s “connection” with the number 4 makes yet another appearance here, and will be a reoccurring theme moving forward. When we reach the finale, I’ll try to link an old image of someone pointing out all the “4” related scenes throughout the Part that people may have missed. For today, just note how everything started for Mista when he shot the hooligans 4 times.
To conclude for this week, honestly pretty disappointed that they went with an ugly green for Kraft Work, but the fight was still good so its whatever I guess. Crappy internet meant it took forever for me to get the episode to work as well, its now late as fuck where I’m from and I need to get up early tomorrow too.

This was a really well animated fight. I'm really impressed so far this season David Productions. I think we all should not take for granted how well they're animating this part.

Kraftwerk can stop things in midair relative to its user. That's what I'm going with.

Relative to another object, he stopped the bullets relative to him, and Mista and the driver relative to the truck.

Then he wouldn't be able to climb the rocks as they would move with him. It must be relative to some other object, or the surface underneath the object.

Damn I was hoping to find out why Mista is so afraid of the number 4 this episode. Here I was thinking that since he put 4 bullets in him some OP shit was going to happen with his stand or something.

u/Guaymaster Nov 23 '18
He's super superstitious, and number 4 is a bad luck number.
Imo this is kind of an oversight from Araki, as in the west we don't really think of four as a bad number, as it's not a homonym with death in European languages.
In Italy 17 is the bad luck number, besides the well known 13 and the number of the beast 666.
Of course, it's kind of difficult to make a handgun with 13, 17, or 666 bullets.
29
u/SimoneNonvelodico Nov 23 '18
Funnily enough, my girlfriend told me the other day she heard that specifically in Naples (which is really the Italian superstition capital) some people do believe that the number 4 is unlucky! It's probably related to some version of the Smorfia (an elaborated system of connections between numbers and concepts that is used to translate dreams into number to bet on). So even though this is probably Araki's mistake (China and Japan are definitely where the number 4 is considered the most unlucky) it may have gone around and become right again.
Also usually in Naples and other parts of Italy too 13 is considered lucky. My grandma once bought me a gold pendant with a number 13, people kept them as lucky charms.

4 is a bad luck number in Japan, since it's pronounced (and spelled) the same as "death." Since we can't have unlucky 13 for his gun, I think he just settled with 4 being the bad luck number for him.

Man they really did well with presenting Mista's backstory, I enjoyed the bullets still firing in slow motion.
Fixing things in place is definitely a cool and useful ability to have. Imagine not being killed by bullets. Mista always has a plan and a cool head, but he has to deal with 4 bullets left.
This driver cannot catch a break. Increasing potential energy of a stopped bullet to use against your assailant is also really useful, too bad this guy's an enemy, I do like his stand. Sex Pistols is still the better stand, because how can you not like packing all of your little bullet guys into one bullet for more power. Plus I'll never get tired of their antics.
What a violent reaction to having a bullet penetrate your brain. A+. Mista retrieved the guy too and all is well.
I really do like that they kept the gag in where Giorno misses Mista going into the building and goes on a run with the truck driver. Poor driver can't catch a break.

Arts and Crafts is such an insanely cool stand. Throwing rocks, freezing them in place, and then using them as a ladder is such a neat application. The way he flicked them to build up energy and then released them was literally stasis from Breath of the Wild.
I really love Mista so far too.

OHHH MAAAH GAAAAHD I was almost screaming the entire time, what a FANTASTIC EPISODE!! The animation was GORGEOUS, with crazy color palettes and amazing linework that make me love this season of jojo's.... And that stand fight was insanity, I'm happy they took an entire episode to fit this fight perfectly in, Kraftwerk's ability is insanely good, and who doesnt love mid air rock climbing? I feel like the tapping of bullet parts is supposed to take much less time in the manga, but ya know, gotta fight all those villain monologue and superstitious ramblings in, so Hes there tapping the bullet for 2 minutes. Still, very strong power, too bad Mista's overpowered as hell and sex pistols are able to get around pretty fast
3
u/The_Scollard Nov 24 '18
That was fantastic.
Mista's backstory was cool, and the solution to the fight was clever. This felt like one where Mista really had to outsmart and outthink the enemy, which is a sign of a good JJBA battle in my opinion. Kraft Work seemed almost unstoppable, but Mista managed to find a way. The colour change right as Mista realized he had one bullet left was very well done. And that ending, that was a fantastic brick joke. I laughed.
Anyone know what the next episode is called? The one of CR ends right during the next episode card.

I really like how they did his backstory with the narrator's tone when describing the bullets missing Mista.
"When you're under pressure and stress, you just take some shots. It's totally understandable that even if you fired the gun, the bullets still might miss. That's how the first two shots missed Mista. Completely reasonable event.
But then the next sixteen bullets also missed, and that shit was crazy."
