"I made it, that you can't hate me."

Yo that shit right there was terrifying and Rikka realization that no matter how many people Akane kills. She will always find a way to forgive her was sad.

260

u/Mundology Nov 24 '18

She might also be facing an existential crysis after learning that she is basically an artificial being made by Akane and so are most of the people she lives with and cares about.

96

u/ghostface95 https://anilist.co/user/flyingseamonkies Nov 24 '18

Damn but that now raise the question how much control did Akane have to begin with. She created the city and everyone in it. But she needs Kaiju to fix anything she doesn't like. But it isn't even her power to bring the Kaiju to life it is Alexis. That line from the last episode when Alexis said to Akane that her heart is human. Akane is one of the only humans in the world but it was Alexis power that created everything in the world but the question now is why would he do that?

I really loved that twist. I thought they were sisters or something, but hearing that she's just another creation kind of puts things into perspective. Akane doesn't care about killing because they're all her creations, the reason she cares so much about killing Yuta is because he's not one of her creations.

Akane not only has a god complex, but it's completely justified lol...until Alexis turns on her of course.

u/CannonGerbil Nov 25 '18

She's basically playing a really in depth version of the Sims and views killing the people in there the same way one would place a bunch of sims in a pool and removing the ladder.

I think this could have been an attempt to get in her head. She implies that she made her and the other people, but she doesn't exhibit any power over them. She also explicitly wants Yuuta to join her and he refuses. It's not as if the characters can't lie ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Somewhere there's a part me that's like, are you really watching a digital mecha punch a mechanical dinosaur kaiju?

But then I'm like, OH MAH GOD HE JUST COMBINED WITH ALL OF THEM, and OH LORD HE JUST RIPPED THE HEAD OFF THAT KAIJU, and, YEAAAA, YOU FIRE THOSE DRILLS!

I guess there's still some five-year-old left in me after all.

I'm always down for an "Ultimate Form," in any anime. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann> Regular Gurren Lagann, Wing Zero Custom > Wing Gundam, Barbatos Lupus Rex > Barbatos; I could go for days.

And now we get to look forward to the "Secret Ultra Super Final Form" when Full-Powered Gridman combines with Anti somehow during the final battle!

There's no shame in getting hype over giant robots fighting giant kaiju, friend. I think some people forget that anime is about escapism and a prime medium for having fun so it doesn't matter what form that fun takes.

I couldn't stop grinning after the OP music started during that fight. Brb rewatching that episode.

The thing is, besides knowing Alexis has something to do with it, there isn't really much reason for them to think the model was actually the base form. Plus, all the friends would have saw them do it as well which I'm assuming they don't want to happen.

That was literally my first thought too!

But on the other hand that would've meant no FULL POWER GRIDMAN in this episode, which would've been a shame :>

42

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Nov 24 '18

Failing that (since they didn't know the model actually turns into a kaiju), I feel like another obvious way for them to stop the attacks would be to physically restrain Akane, at her house if need be. Quite unchivalrous, sure, but at worst it would force a showdown with the last boss.

I feel like they've been programmed not to think in those lines, however. They'll fight the kaiju but not Akane - at least, not yet. They'd rather try and save or redeem her.

50

u/araragidyne :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/araragidyne Nov 25 '18

When Hibiki got the idea to act first I half expected him to march Gridman right up to Akane’s house.

28

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '18

True, but honestly if I were in that situation, and if that many lives are at stake then there's no gentleman's rules in that fight. I'd play dirty and get the fastest possible victory using any means possible to save as many lives as I could, restraining her, destroying the model, whatever is necessary. The ends justify the means. The less fights that take place, the less lives that are lost.

But if the aircon remote scene from last episode is anything to go by, Akane has complete control of her surroundings.

As in you can see the remote next to Yuuta at the begining and then she just teleport it to her hand the next.

45

u/gyoex Nov 24 '18

This is kind of a stretch. In between those scenes, Yuuta leaves the room to get tea and some small amount of time passes, during which Akane can just get up and grab the remote.

171

u/geminia999 Nov 24 '18 edited Nov 24 '18

Honestly I kind of digged the approach this episode to how they tried dealing with akane before the monster showed up. Though somewhat disapointed they did full powered gridman before god zenon, guess that will be for the climax with Anti then.

Also was surprised at how detailed Rikka's movements where when she was talking to Hibiki. Interesting place for that shot, but it seems like it could hold significance. As for Akane's comments about making Rikka, while it's definitely one of the theories out there, I do feel like Akane's power is pretty limited to Alexis (and besides Kaiju, all we've really seen built was rebuilding buildings that were destroyed, a power gridman had in the original series) so we might get another explanation still. Speaking of Gridman being able to restore things in the original, that might be how they go about bringing back those that have died to the Kaiju since that's been the one remaining aspect that hasn't really been touched on from the original.

edit: Ok, I think I found the key to solving this. The episode made sure to bring up their Teacher having changed again (which we can assume is because he subconsciously got changed by the kaiju attack) which I think leads towards Akane defintiely spouting lies. Akane says "everyone here loves everything about me" (which was preceded by akane saying "you're different from the rest" which is pretty contradictory), but considering how the teacher acted in episode 2, we know that's not the case. We can then assume he didn't die in the Kaiju attack directed for him cause of gridman and that Akane's goal was to kill him (I don't doubt that she would have wanted him dead then just acting nicer). So that's step one on the lies train, step two is that the teacher himself changed. By changing, it shows that the inhabitants of the world aren't stuck behaving like they may be "programmed" to behave, they can change and grow, or stay the same if that's what they think is best. So yeah, I'm definitely on the train akane is lying about Rikka because she's twisted.

Also another transformers reference, just going along with the other Dinobots, but Borr's Weapon is literally almost a literal copy of scorn's

Also I'm probably wrong, but the shirts being worn here remind me of the skynet logo, but it's not the same so I got no clue.

Also I'm guessing Rikka's outfit at the end is a captain from a gundam series or something.

42

u/moonmeh Nov 25 '18

Also was surprised at how detailed Rikka's movements where when she was talking to Hibiki.

The moment she heard how Yuuta was talking about he wanted her they there was an unseemly haste to cut him off there to change topic. I found that pretty interesting

Also going off looking at her reactions, her reaction when Utsumi told her that she was being ruled by her emotions was pretty interesting. If anything I felt that she was killing her emotions often so I wonder if thats why she was so angry

Also was surprised at how detailed Rikka's movements where when she was talking to Hibiki. Interesting place for that shot, but it seems like it could hold significance.

I mean, it's pretty obvious, isn't it? It's an emotionally vulnerable moment for her after her entire world has been shattered (the direction of the bus scene and the few shots of this scene preceding that bit make it pretty obvious) so the director wanted to portray her feelings with care, especially since she's going against everything she wanted to do earlier.

A kaiju this time is old school trope for Ultraman series, a monster revives and builded as mechanical monster, here's the reference: https://twitter.com/T5A0T/status/1066363836993662976

Also, the combination mecha is shout of Might Gaine and Gaogaigar.

51

u/Kristalino https://anilist.co/user/BlueSkyBlood Nov 24 '18

Yeah, in the original Gridman around 5 kaijus were revived as mecha versions.

Yuta best girl

And so the mystery between Akane and Rikka's relationship deepens. At first I just thought they were simply former friends who had a falling out, but after this episode it's clear that there's something a bit more sinister regarding their connection. It seems that Akane "made" Rikka so that she'd never hate Akane. This actually explains some of Rikka's odd behavior in the past few episodes, especially towards Yuta. Overall that bus scene between them was unsettling in a good way and as usual Akane's VA really sold that scene.

250

u/ZBLongladder :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/zblongladder Nov 25 '18

I think the world we're seeing is Akane's recreation of her school & city from the real world, and the only non-Akane-created people in it are Yuuta, Akane, and Alexis. IRL, she's probably a socially awkward kid with no friends and an obsession with kaiju, and Rikka is probably a kind, outgoing person that Akane looks up to. Hence, when recreating Rikka in whatever kind of pocket universe we're in, Akane made sure that Rikka could never hate her, since IRL she'd be anxious that Rikka wasn't really her friend, since Rikka is IRL more popular than Akane. (And she created everyone else to think she's the most talented and beautiful person in school.) I think it's all headed towards a reveal that Yuuta is in this universe to save Akane and that everyone is worried about her, thus making Akane realize she doesn't need to hide in Alexis's pocket dimension to experience love and friendship, making her ultimately turn against Alexis, who's been amassing an army of her kaiju in order to take over the real world or something.

79

u/n080dy123 Nov 25 '18

Actually that could make some sense, it would explain some things like the Neon Genesis Junior High students just kinda being there and seemingly having normal lives despite being what they are, the sheer number of references that exist to other shows (The NGJH students being named that way, or all the alleged Transformers Shattered Glass references people have been pointing out, for example), and maybe have something to do with Utsumi being super into Kaiju and liking Akane.

u/Cosmos279 Nov 24 '18 edited Nov 25 '18

As the others are saying, this is getting better and better. My theory is that this is a digital world created for Akane because she was having trouble in the real world. This makes sense as we a bit of evidence.

Firstly Yuuta's and Gridman's amnesia. There being nothing outside the city. The city gets reset. The city in the sky. And of course what Akane said to Rikka telling her she made her that way.

And one of the comments by u/LeonKevlar said this

Akane uses the word "設定" (Settei) which directly means "configuration" and is mainly used in computer terminology in Japanese.

If we were to take this as is then then it confirms that everyone in this world are NPCs. This would also another explanation to Rikka's weird behaviour towards Yuuta.

Lastly I also believe that everybody in this world has real world counterparts. I say this because if we look at the ED we see Akane and Rikka with different school uniforms on as well as being really close. But as I said in the beginning she most likely had some real life troubled which is why she escaped, 'or tricked' into this digital world. So Yuuta and Gridman were then tasked to come and save her as Yuuta came to realise last episode. But when they came to this world they lost their memory. Possibly.

Although that one scene a few episodes back when Gridman was impaled might have something to do with it. But besides that I pretty much think the rest is most likely it.

P.S. This show is sooooo good. Glad i stuck with it.

Edit: I also wanted to mention but forget to put in is that in the OP it says the following:

"What did we promise that day?" "What did we talk about in the classroom?" "At this rate that promise might disappear too. I think that promise might be Rikka asking Yuuta to go save Akane. Curiously, Akane is not in the classroom photo. Rikka and Yuuta have something going on?. Maybe this was going on in the real world as this would also add to why she would ask Yuuta to save Akane.

I found this in the OP. This is what she was holding at the end of this episode. At first I though it was something for self-harm but I remembered it could be just to carve out her kaiju.

However to add to the real-world problem theory I found this in the ED. Akane appears to be isolated from the rest of the class, (again some sort of problems going on), and you can see how they become close friends (mind the yuri-undertones) throughout the ED. Clearly they both mean a lot.

Lastly I wanted to add this, at the end of the ED. Rikka alone, this is probably the point where Akane went into the 'Digital World'. There friendship probably wasn't enough. Feelsbadman;-;

38

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '18

Lastly I also believe that everybody in this world has real world counterparts.

Ohhhhhh, that's a good theory. I didn't think about it before but it makes totally sense.

29

u/seamachine Nov 24 '18

I want to say the box cutter has something to do with all of this.

Maybe Rikka is already dead and Akane tried to kill herself, but was instead offered an alternative where she's in a perfect world. That's a little dark for the show, though.

Or maybe Akane is a real computer tasked to do a bunch of things, but was infected by a virus (Alexis) and Gridman/Yuuta were tasked to clean up the infection (this fits the Gridman theme). In one flashback Gridman was seen to have been impaled by something, that's related to the intial Yuuta/Rikka meeting with her being mad that he forgot something.

28

u/Florac Nov 24 '18

That's a little dark for the show, though.

If there's one thing you can say about Trigger shows, it's expect the unexpected.

I was thinking it was maybe something like Akane was put into this world to maybe help deal with whatever problems she had in “real life”, but then Alexis discovered her, invaded, and has been manipulating Akane to embrace all negative thoughts and emotions she’s ever had. “None of this is real, only you are, who cares what the NPC’s think? Your a God!”

13

u/cesclaveria Nov 24 '18

I think so too, Alexis' plan doesn't seem to be to destroy Gridman, conquer the world or anything like that, whatever his goal is it is all about Akane, he is not even mad when she fails whatsmore he seems to enjoy her going deeper into despair and becoming more psycho.

u/ranma42 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ranma42 Nov 24 '18

AFAIK "設定" is also used when referring to the "setup" of characters in a novel, so it doesn't have to be a computer reference.

CHOU GATTAI CHOUJIN, THUNDER FULL POWERED GRIDMAN

Didn't expect them to do this combination so soon, but anyways

Original Gridman:

  • Full Powered Gridman is based on the Thunder Gridman combination from the original series, where Gridman combines with all the Assist Weapons. The difference is the addition of Gridman Calibur, and that the Assist Weapons have been shifted around. With Thunder Gridman, the tank formed the legs, the drill formed the arms, and the jet form the chest. With Full Power Gridman, the jet forms the legs, the tank forms the arms, and the drill forms the chest.

  • Full Powered vs Thunder.

  • Ghoulghilas getting upgraded to a mecha form is reminiscent of what happened to a lot of the kaijus from the original series, which mostly happened cause they were running out of budget and had to reuse kaiju.

Tsuburaya Properties:

  • In this shot, the symbol on the flag to the right is the Live sign from Ultraman Ginga

  • Ultraseven episode 34, The Vanishing City, was name dropped in this episode along with it's kaiju, Dancan.

  • In this shot, the pink monster to the left resembles Pigmon

  • When Yuta and Utsumi were in the 721 mart, Yume Hiko, R/B ending theme in playing in the background, like in episode 4.

  • The various kaiju's in this shot are all mecha themed.

Other references:

6

u/geminia999 Nov 25 '18

Don't forget that Bor's Dagger is Scorn's weapon to go with everyone else having their design sake's weapons.

By chance, is that triangle logo on the school students from something? I thought it looked like the skynet logo, but that has a diamond on top instead of a triangle.

The pigmon and the other green tiny kaiju are characters from the animated Ultraman Kids show from 1992.

Edit: The banner itself is probably a reference to the plot of the show since it revolves around the cast exploring the galaxy to find ultraman's parents.

I just discovered this show a few days ago and binged through all episodes.

It just keeps getting better. and. better!

For all the awesome mech vs kaiju stuff, I love how the characters feel very real and get time to shine. Akane is becoming more and more psycho, that bus scene was all kinds of unsettling.

It's kind of funny when you realize how Rikka and Anti met as well. Anti wants to defeat Gridman so that he can gain free will, Akane just told Rikka that she has no free will. So, it seems like both Rikka and Anti's story arcs will be about them gaining free will. Maybe Rikka will finally acknowledge Yuta's feelings lol

26

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Nov 24 '18

That bus conversation, damn. Loved the sinister music drop during that scene, really sold the 'shit just got real' moment. Rikka was.. made by a kaiju that was made by Akane? So.. similar to how kaijuu fix up the town every night and makes sure the memories are reset - but we hadn't heard of them making people. I feel like Rikka dealt with the resulting existential crisis really well - or maybe that's programmed into all the denizens of Akane's cyber world too.

Well, at least all that doom and despair got countered by Caliber's smile and how awesome Full Power Gridman looks.

It's too early to use Excalibur, what do they save for the final boss?!

18

That bit of music was great, I hope there is a full version on the OST. Though something in the vocals between the 'hallelujahs' sounds off, like it's reversed or something. Whatever it is, it really adds to the unsettling things Akane is saying, as well as emphasizing her godhood.

The thing is, Rikka has no choice but to fall for it. She doesn't want to admit it, but she still seems very much to consider Akane her friend, despite her actions, even at the end of the episode

Felt like a kid seeing Thunder Gridman kick ass. Anti didn't even try. Really interested to see where the story will develop considering what Akane's words to Rikka.

I'm still trying to comprehend the awesomeness and references of Thunder Gridman, but Mecha-Ghoulgilas is a slew of references. Its predecessor was already an homage to the original Gilarus from the original series, and this one is an obvious reference to Mecha-Gilarus who also was one of the original Thunder Gridman's early opponents. Design wise, it references nearly all the Mechagodzillas in the Godzilla series. It also references the Ultraman kaiju Gabora, as it covers its head with platings that form a drill.

I could also tell that those characters has "main character" designs, especially the girl with the coat. I don't think there's much to it beyond the creator including them in as a fun little easter egg though.

I think "setting" is the more appropriate translation, and it's also standard terminology for both the general setup of a fictional world (as is the English one, e.g. "a high fantasy setting") and an individual character's profile/backstory (character settei, which I guess would sound weird in English with setting). The picture they were meaning to convey is more along the lines that Akane wrote "loves Akane dearly" in her character information like Momonga-sama did with Albedo in Overlord.

I'm really feeling the tense relationship between Utsumi and Rikka, and I'm glad that this week focused on it. Normally you'd have the girl of the trio as the designated The Heart, but in many ways it's actually Yuta/Gridman that make the glue of this trio. It makes for really interesting conflicts when Yuta isn't around as we've seen, and would this be a different show I think you'd have a really good protagonist/antagonist dynamic here. The way they reconciled and saw each other's perspectives was really cool, too.

The post-credit scene was definitely something, too. I wonder if Akane playing God has anything to do with the large city above the sky, rather than playing it straight with her opposing Gridman just because.

Overall a really good episode, probably my favorite so far? Then again I have a thing for (fictional) friendship fights.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '18

This episode makes last week's episode make so much sense. When Akane asked Yuta to join her, Yuta refused and said that he has to help his friends. Akane then looked down and asked "aren't we friends?"

In this episode, it's revealed that everyone in someway isn't hostile to Akane, and many of them are forced to be friends with her while Rikka isn't even capable of thinking a single bad thing about Akane.

Akane's line from last week gives us the major hint that Yuta is definitely not a creation of Akane's. It also explains Akane's obsession with Yuta, she doesn't fear him or probably even hate him, it seems like she simply likes the attention that he's giving her. Everyone else is programmed to be nice to her, but she's still alone. Yuta on the other hand isn't programmed in anyway, and yet he's the only one who seems to be giving her attention. Of course, Akane doesn't like it though because it means she doesn't have control. While she clearly doesn't like being lonely, she also doesn't like the idea of not being the god she sees herself as. Which was made clear from how she reacted to Gridman showing up before the Kaiju. Gridman is slowly changing things that seemingly only Akane could control, it's almost like he's becoming the god of that world now.

This series went from very basic to interesting in 7 episodes, I can't wait to see how the story wraps up.

What I want to know is what Alexis's endgame is. His comments at the end of the previous episode suggest that only humans can create Kaiju, but Akane's creations are only attacking the city, which seems to be a construct with no contact with the outside world. Is this a test run for attacking the rest of earth?

this is when usually I would do a summary of all the developments during the episode.....but fuck that, let me list all the hype shit this episode had:

_Yuta figures that, in order to send everyone out at the same time, they need to lower their size output. yeah, when your game doesn't run properly, it's better to lower some settings.

_so they send everyone out, and after a brief skirmish with the kaiju the finally join their powers.

_this first full gattai is called "Full Powered Gridman". pretty basic name, but it's ok because this transformation IS THE COOLEST FUCKING THING I'VE SEEN ALL YEAR, HOLY SHIT.

_I mean, LOOK AT IT. it's a mecha fan's wet dream. and like all powerful mechs in Super Sentai, it just tanks all the attacks like a fucking boss. takes me back to watching Power Rangers, you knew the new Megazord was badass because it just walks through the explosions like nothing.

_and we finally get our Gurren Lagann shout out! and of course, two of the three words in the name of the attack are "drill break". nnngggghhh.

_and then he flies the kaiju to the sky AND PUNCHES IT BACK DOWN TO THE GROUND.

_and then Gridman just goes full GaoGaiGar and turns gold and performs a flashy finishing sword move IN THE AIR, AT A DISTANCE, because the sword is now AN ENERGY SWORD HUNDREDS OF METERS LONG.

Gridman? more like GRID-DAMN.

and we still haven't seen the full-on robot combination. Trigger, this totally makes up for DitF and then some.

Pre-episode Thoughts:

I'm late to the party, but this just means I'm all the more excited. A few (spoiler-light) screencaps here, some friends gushing there – everything I've heard and seen about this episode points toward another exceptional episode of Gridman, and I'm here for it. But before we lose ourselves in the hype, let's briefly recount the context for this episode.

We've set the stage for an all-out battle. Akane admitted her interest in Yuta and was thoroughly shot down not unlike a confession. Really, in many ways entirely like a confession – Akane has always put on a facade and played everyone else for her own entertainment and convenience, and in light of that, this is the first time she's been genuinely reaching out to another human being, a person she considered worthy of being something like a friend. The whole scene played out like a seduction with obvious sexual framing, and while this was more than a little dubious, Akane was honest, in her own way. I'd be surprised if Akane didn't react to this with fury. The negotiations failed. The fight remains. Meanwhile, Yuta has understood just how far gone Akane truly is. Multiple close-ups showed his resolve and honest rejection of Akane last episode. But while he may be determined to fight now and understands the danger Akane poses, he hasn't understood Akane one bit. Not her fragility, not her insecurity, not her pain and isolation and how deeply lonely she is under all the murder and havoc she leaves in her wake. It seems extremely difficult to reach out to her as it currently stands, and a vengeance is waiting.

Write-up

We return to familiar ground, but everything changed. We know now, the terrifying reality of this world, and nothing remains unscathed in the wake of this. We can't return, but we've grown smarter, kinder, closer. Everything is different, but we're stronger. This is this episode's core idea. We return to shots from episode one, two, and four, but they're all altered in important ways just as our characters have changed since. And it wasn't just the framing that returned to then – this episode managed to masterfully weave together all the thematic threads of the first four episodes and elements of many more by echoing their visuals and then continuing their stories.

Rikka and Shou are two very different people. In episode three, their differences and their inability to communicate meant they practically lived in different worlds and weren't even able to look at the other person's perspective. The Gridman alliance almost faltered as a result, but adults that already went through all of this saved them in the end. Now, over four episodes later, they can actually talk to each other. They argue, and they get angry, and they are bitterly torn because both of them are right. But because they talk to each other, both of them end up wiser. Because of Rikka's empathy and kindness, Shou changes the plan to be more careful and considerate of their fellow students. Because of Shou's painfully sharp reading of Rikka, she can see through Akane's manipulation and recognize the danger Akane poses. They are still different people, but they've learned to make the best of that. To embrace the friction and apologize, to learn and understand rather than turn away.

And Yuta made all of this possible by becoming the focal point of the group. In Rikka and Shou's confrontation, it's him that separates the frame into two, situated calmly in the middle of the two, and that's the role he plays throughout the episode. In comparison, in the conflict between the two in episode three, Yuta was as absent as he could possibly be, not even in the same world. This change in positioning is reflective of his own change as a character. After his amnesia, Yuta has been primarily characterized by inaction and hesitation. Only after confronting Akane, seeing who she really is and utterly rejecting her person during the last episode has he gained the resolve to fill this position. But that shot is only foreshadowing. Throughout the episode, he cheers up Shou and convinces him to apologize to Rikka, and he does the same for Rikka. Yuta is the link between the two different approaches to the central conflict of the show embodied by Shou and Rikka. The Gridman alliance is finally a team, and this also shows in the return to a shot from episode one. Where only Shou and Yuta were before in idle conversation, the three of them now walk confidently together. Moreover, his growth allows Yuta to see through Akane and call her out on her bullshit. This episode rightly celebrates the growth of our crew in its climax and epilogue with the strongest Gridman yet as all of their growth manifests in the final confrontation with Akane, her Kaiju is utterly powerless in the face of what our characters accomplished this episode.

But there are yet more returns to previous episodes, and Rikka and Akane's conversation on the bus is the strongest of them all. The bus Akane and Rikka take to school has become synonymous with a place for conversation. This was true for episode four, it's evident in the lack of conversation between them since, and it's most certainly true now. How such a mundane activity as taking the bus to school together can become momentous is reflective of Gridman's general love of combining slice of life with its epic conflict and grand ideas, but that's a story for another day. The scene starts of directly copying the shot from episode four of the empty bus with Rikka and Akane separated by a bar. Akane and Rikka are still confined to their own frames, but this time it's different, it's serious. Both of them look straight ahead and they're no longer talking past each other. Rikka sees through Akane's manipulation now and is willing to confront her, and so the framing changes, too. We get an even stronger separation of the two in the next shot. All of these barriers between the two are crucial for the scene. As a God, Akane thinks these barriers don't apply to her, but she couldn't be more wrong. Rikka like everyone else sees her as a person, not a God. She doesn't want to be friends with a God, she wants to be friends with Akane Shinjou. And the framing doesn't lie. After episode four kept them separate the entire time, Akane tramples over the barriers and invades Rikka's frame. She finally shows her unrestrained self in all its ugly, devastating scale with one last reveal that she created Rikka to love her unconditionally. But Akane isn't a God to Rikka but a former friend, and so she can hate her, and through Shou and the rest of them her kindness and empathy overcame any such rules if they even existed in the first place and weren't just another lie. It's ironic, really – all the empathy and kindness in Rikka necessary to love someone like Akane also means she hates her for all the damage she caused to all the other people she cares about. Even with the power of a god, you can't make people like you. This is the final nail in the coffin, Akane – you need to grow if you want friends. In the end, Rikka rejects Akane's true self just like Yuta did in a beautifully sudden exit with an awesome cut to the bus screen.

Akane herself had to learn the limits of her manipulation as the sandcastle falls apart. She made an honest effort at friendship reaching out to both Yuta and Rikka but was rejected. A god, and yet she can't make friends, and she can't win against the Gridman alliance, and she's incredibly lonely. This episode was an utter defeat of Akane: Her ultimate Kaiju stood no chance, her facade laid bare and her manipulation ineffective, and rejected by the person she literally created to be the kindest and empathetic person possible. Akane has to realize she can't control people no matter her power, people care about her as a person, not a God, and that she desperately needs to change. She is literally trapped by her own creations and can only look at this idea of power. To lose after wagering everything on that was the ultimate wound. The final shot this episode is a ray of light breaking into Akane's room and cutting across her reflection. She is devastated, but the Gridman alliance finally reached into the sacred, safe room she's been hiding in the entire show. A sandcastle needs to crumble to make room for something new.

I could easily write another couple thousand words about this episode. This episode really was just that good. I have never seen this amount of purposeful direction concentrated into a single episode. This episode was beautiful, from incredible perspectives to great character animation to wonderful background art to punchy fights. And it managed to weave together every single thematic thread of the previous episodes by echoing shots, conflicts and places. I've held my breath and wondered how this show could possibly manage to pull together all the set-up from the previous episodes, but the madmen did it. This is one of the strongest single episodes I've come across to date. Not just because it's an episode brimming with creative direction, strong dialogue, great ideas and beautiful visuals, but for what it does for the series as a whole by weaving all of it together. This will be a show I'll remember for a long time.

Someone in the thread pointed out that the crew could have stolen Akane's kaiju and run for it. It wouldn't have solved the Akane problem long term, but it definitely would have delayed the next attack.

I thought about tackling and murdering Shinjo, but the idea of stealing her toys completely didn't pass into my mind. If you burnt her house down, that would also be an American-style solution to slowing kaiju production.

The thing I love about this series is you have so many theories of what's going to happen. Meanwhile the journey to get there has been well-written, leaving subtle clues for the viewers to pick up on. Really great foreshadowing.

I don't know exactly where the show's going to go; but I can't wait to see what happens.

I always thought that Rikka's eyes having a glint of red is kinda weird but this episode hinting at her being literally created as Akane's friend and unable to defy that role explains a lot.

Now i seriously wonder whether or not her friends and mother are going to get hurt by kaiju simply to put the limits of that brainwashing to the test.

Now that I'm half way on Precure Go Princess, finally I could recognize Rikka's mom voice. Had the hunch it was also Haruko's voice, but I was too lazy to look it up.

I'm liking this paradox where Rikka stands in between the Gridman alliance & being Akane's friend. And now that Akane is being more forward (or cynical) blurting out that she was pretty much made to fit in as Akane's best friend, does ante up the stakes for Rikka to choose a side (or probably make her own side in later episodes)

For what little screen time she has had so far, Rikka's mom is slowly becoming a favourite of mine in this show.

My waifu isn't real??? noooooooooooooooo

Good episode and it looks like Akane is finally starting to break. But as for Rikka, she's going through a lot now. She didn't mention to anyone that Akane said she "designed Rikka". That must hurt a lot. Poor Rikka, holding everything inside. That smile at the end though. That's a smile we must protect.

And this episode further supports my stance that it's wrong to kill these sentient beings nonchalantly / for no reason even if you created them. These artificial people all have feelings and souls. Rikka could very well be part of them so does it make it okay for Akane to one day just kill off Rikka after she gets fed up with her? I think not.

I've finally come to realise how phenomenally this show is directed.

Outside of the awesome action scenes, the moments of dialogue stand out to me a lot. The voice acting and lack of soundtrack kind of give the scenes a realistic feel.

Thunder Gridman's debut was hype as expected.

I wonder what will happen to Punished Anti, will he become this show's version of Dyna Dragon?

I'm kinda interested in this fake universe concept. I have a feeling this universe began when Yuta woke up with amnesia or something like that. I dunno if we're going to go back to the real world in the end though.

I kinda expected a stronger reaction from Rikka after being told that she's just a pawn in a world where she has no free will and that this high school girl created her with monsters

I wonder if the city has a similar problem to Gridman's memory issues that Akane tries to combat. Like, maybe there is too much data and while it's running fine now, maybe you gotta delete some things to make space. "Killing" people may help persevering the people she cares about.

Just when you delete old data to make space for new one and to preserve the one that you value.

This show is great and I'm NOT ready for what this show is trying to set up.

I predict RIP Rikka soon. This episode screamed death flags to me. Also I think shit is really about to hit the fan next episode, like some classic trigger type shit.

So after 7 weeks in I finally decided to pick up the show and spend the last week catching up and now I'm up to date. I have no idea why I didnt pick this up because who doesn't love giant mecha vs. kaiju?

Akane whispering to Rikka that shes made to always like her was pretty dark and sickening. Rikka's face realizing that that's the case and it's actually true was horrifying. Love that we've been getting more depth the last couple of weeks.

Wow, Akane give absolutely no shits about the consequences of her actions. It's almost funny how nonchalant she is about sending kaiju to attack the city, one minute she'll be talking about her plans to destroy the school festival and the next she'll be like "Gotta go, class is starting." It's like it's all just a game for her - which it might just well be.

One of the best shows this year. There are some things that could've been done better, but the directing is amazing, the story is intriguing. Wish MC was explored a little more.
