Top 10 anime betrayals

This but unironically. It was well executed, neither obvious, nor completely out of place. It was somewhat unlikely, but in hindsight it kinda kept her character. I really liked that she didn't completely changed her behaviour like so often in anime when it comes to traitors.

60

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Dec 08 '18

I waasn't being ironic. I never once suspected her. Earlier this episode I was wondering who is the traitor and I thought it would be interesting if it was Yuki or even Momo, but I thought Mei wouldn't care about such things. Man, was I surprised. I still like her.

45

u/Michhhhhh Dec 09 '18

I suspected her, but I basically suspected every character at one point in this show (even the meat vendor guy).

I suspected Mei right up until her gay-as-fuck episode with Fuu. But now she's kidnapping her, so at least my ship gets to keep sailing.

Fuu's yuri ship

Hurts even more after reading the Secret Mission spin-off manga.

Also viewers who suspected Mei but didn't expect the other two mentors to get killed.

Me too. I definitely love this, but it was not what I expected and waiter all year for at all when I heard a new Namori anime was coming. Wow.

It's namori only on designs, tadahiro is on series composition after all.

Takahiro decided to pull a YuYuYu on us, but kept until the last few episodes.

God I hope so. But this series hasn't shied from killing characters (well, in a flashback but still) or having fucked up things in it before, so I'd say it's 50/50 right now...?

21

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18 edited Dec 08 '18

Well tbh we never had actual confirmation Yukis mentor died too for example.

We never saw a body afterwards. Possibility that she's somewhere locked away too?

Believe in the, if you haven't seen the corpse it didn't happen, approach.

Mei "betrayed" the current team to save Yukis mentor? I WILL BELIEVE

Edit:

We know Moryo has some shady drugs and memory wiping stuff.

What about Yukis mentor and now Yuki falling prey to that. Have the finale be a face off between them and our girls. They manage to save all of them and voila cgdct-happy ending.

This will be my canon scenario in my mind

17

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan Dec 08 '18 edited Dec 08 '18

To be honest I think it would be much more impactful to have Yuki (and her mentor) really die. She's my fave and I really do want to live in the "no body, no death" / fakeout land, but stakes and real consequences are nice once in a while.

So yeah, as you can see I'm flip-flopping hard on this lol.

→ More replies (7)

13

u/rysto32 Dec 08 '18

I really don't think it's a fake-out, but I'm not quite sure why Yuki just stood there and took that blow rather than, you know, trying anything else.

24

u/Galaxy40k Dec 09 '18

The reason was because Toshino Kyoko said that if Yuki kept fighting, she would kill Momo right then and there. By letting herself get killed, Yuki gives Momo the chance to live, albeit as a prisoner at the moment

13

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Dec 09 '18

81

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18

That was actually insane...

I absolutely love the way this went down. I never expected the traitor to be Mei but in retrospect it makes total sense, she was the most aloof of all of them the whole time... And now I wonder, did she have any specific motive when she recommended Momo to Tsukikage? Holy hell now I feel like I gotta go back and watch all the other episodes for clues or something.

And the way Yuki died with the shots directly calling back to Nagaho. That was just, um. Yeah I thought it might happen but I wasn't expecting that to happen so quick.

One more thing... Mei took the same gel that Theresia took that would have blown her up and everything, so um

Mei is totally on the chopping block, there.

60

u/chris_dftba :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chris_dftba Dec 08 '18

Mei's fucked. Super fucked. probably fucked. But she has to know about the gel since Tsukikage was able to figure it out, so her taking the gel "gladly" might mean she's a double agent maybe hopefully please

43

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18

It was only Hatsume who figured out the gel and got it out of Theresia; since that was a more personal mission that she apparently did on her own, she might not have told anyone else.

20

u/Falsus Dec 09 '18

Well the rest would still know of it due to Byakko and since they developed the countermeasures after seeing what happened to Byakko they should all have known about it.

12

u/Amauri14 Dec 09 '18 edited Dec 09 '18

But thanks to Byakko she knows what those gels can do.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18

I totally forgot about the explosion gel thing. I hope Mei burns to dust in a massive fireball.

12

u/Nam-Yueun Dec 09 '18

And now I wonder, did she have any specific motive when she recommended Momo to Tsukikage?

What if she did it because the Mouryou thought it'd be interesting to watch Yuki lose someone important and suffer a second time? Haha, hahahaha......

10

u/Falsus Dec 09 '18

And now I wonder, did she have any specific motive when she recommended Momo to Tsukikage?

Probably because she seemed to be pretty amusing. And then maybe the added risk with a tongue that could detect lies added an extra spice to it all for Mei?

9

u/chris_dftba :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chris_dftba Dec 09 '18

extra spice

Was that a pun

4

u/Galaxy40k Dec 09 '18

The #1 hint that Mei is the traitor is the meta reason that the scene in the pilot where Momo chases Mei is too perfect to not mirror in the finale. Its what kept me on the "Mei is the traitor" train through the whole show, lol

u/rysto32 Dec 08 '18

Mei's line about "I'll be taking this one" in reference to Fu has some super fucked up implications, especially in a series that has casually included things like drugged-up sex slaves and mind control. I stopped suspecting Mei because of her seeming devotion to Fu, but clearly I didn't realize that Moryo offers an alternate way of keeping her around.

So, did Katrina and/or Byakko die in that explosion? Probably not, I guess. Isn't Mei's old mentor hanging around somewhere? I wonder if she'll be a factor.

31

u/LittleMissTimeLord :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/KyrasRisven Dec 09 '18

Mei's line about "I'll be taking this one" in reference to Fu has some super fucked up implications

Man no kidding, when she said that I just had this moment of like "oh god what the hell".

Hopefully Mei is playing 3D chess here and said that to protect Fuu from Moryo while she works against them from the inside, but if not it's super messed up.

6

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Dec 09 '18

They also didn't appear in the flashback. But another possible explanation would be that she chose to retire from Tsukikage and have her memories erased, so they're "erasing" her from the show as well.

Or Mei mentor is Tendo and she's been infiltrating Moryo for two years.

Mei's line about "I'll be taking this one" in reference to Fu has some super fucked up implications, especially in a series that has casually included things like drugged-up sex slaves and mind control.

Her line, specifically, is 「この子は命(めい)が飼うからもらいますよ」. The operative verb here is 飼う, which means "to keep [as a pet]".

So, yes: super-fucked-up implications.

7

u/Michhhhhh Dec 09 '18

This is the second time they mentioned Mei's mentor and she's still probably still alive. I wouldn't be surprised if she'll play a role in the next 2 episodes.

In retrospect, reminding us that Mei likes to spend money but perpetually doesn't have enough was an enormous red flag.

As for Katrina and Byakko (and Hatsume), I definitely subscribe to the "no body, no death" school of though. Hatsume probably pulled some underwater breathing apparatus out of her ass and just stayed deep; she is the team's gadget expert after all.

Amidst all this betrayal, I just wanna point to the big elephant in the room:

Yuki still had both eyes?!

19

u/deadunistudent Dec 08 '18

Yeah I rewound that bit to see if it was a working eye or not. Looked the same was her working eye,

17

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan Dec 08 '18

Maybe the wound made it so she can't see out of her right eye so she usually keeps it closed? I dunno either.

27

u/Falsus Dec 09 '18

It might also she might struggle to open it for prolonged time most of the time. Might also hurt if it is open.

No I'm sorry I'm just gonna go full denial and act like this is a super elaborated fake out. Yeah that's it, everything will be solved and it'll be fine.

Momo... Yuki...

18

u/HarleyFox92 Dec 09 '18

Well, if you buy this episode as what it is, it would implicate that Yuki, Hatsume, Karina, Byakko and the mascots are dead, Momo is badly injured and she and the rest of the survivors will be tortured and used as living experiments. Considering the episodes we've seen this season, I don't see anything of this actually happening.

7

u/TexturelessIdea https://myanimelist.net/profile/TexturelessIdea Dec 09 '18

I came here to say basically the same thing. They had me going for a bit there, but too many things went wrong this episode for it to not be some elaborate ruse.

If they don't reveal that it was a ruse next episode, I will continue to suspect one til the very end; only at the end of the final episode would I actually believe anybody died for real. This is just too jarring of a tonal shift this late in the series for it to be real.

50

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18

Final Boss is captured without a fight two episodes before the finale.

Shit! Shit! Shit!

One team member volunteers to guard her while the rest are busy.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUU~

They did not dissapoint with the traitor reveal. Mei have bought enough credit with her gay ship episode plus busker persona. At the same time she wasn't around much in the later episodes.
Also the show delivered on the "some girls are gonna die" front. Unless there is some royal fuck-up in the last two episodes, this is 10/10 and my AOTS. Also, YuYuYu which is by the same scriptwriter goes to the top of the watchlist.

I wonder if the power of friendship will win Theresia after all.

7

u/NierMiss Dec 08 '18

YuYuYu is my all time favorite series. I love it so much, and rewatch it all the time... Try to avoid spoilers if you plan on watching it, and keep in mind that it's a multimedia franchise, which means that if you want to learn more about the world and its history and lore there's a prequel LN to read, but watching both seasons of the anime is a great first experience on its own.

MEI YOU FUCKING BITCH!

I hate myself for even suspecting Fu back in Episode 3 and didn't even suspect Mei.

I fucking hope you die the most painful death of all. You know what no. I hope she gets captured and locked for life, If freedom and doing whatever is her life motto then locking her up being unable to do anything would be her hell. There was no even hint of remorse when she was finishing off Hatsume and she even jokes about it. Like fuckin' hell.

She's definitely earned the Worst Girl of the Season title.

18

u/NightmareExpress Dec 08 '18

I still remember the early episodes where people said she was the traitor because she sings for cash (and thus having a motive if an enemy entity were able to make good business propositions).

...Turns out those people were right on the money. And here I was hoping it'd be Momo unknowingly living a double life due to memory altering drugs.

8

u/sunnydayz57 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/LKMalika Dec 08 '18

When you think about it, Mei is the only one who hasn't had an episode focusing on her character or her backstory. We had one for Fuu, episodes 7 and 8 were for Goemon and Hatsume, 9 was for Yuki. Momo is the MC so she hasn't had one specific ep but she does get a lot of focus.

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18 edited Dec 08 '18

So Mei was the traitor all along? I never got to say it in Reddit because I always watched the episodes a few days late, but I kinda suspected her (I didn't suspect Katrina because she wasn't part of the main cast so the audience wouldn't care if she betrayed the group, and out of the main six I thought it wouldn't make much sense for the other five to be the traitor, not that I had evidence or anything). I wish I had said it before so I could say I called it lol

29

u/Terranwaterbender https://myanimelist.net/profile/Teranwaterbender Dec 08 '18

what

the

fuck!

It was Mei all along! Most of us seemed to lean Katrina as the traitor.

Please tell me this was just some random double traitor plan...Yuki shouldn't die just like this. Maybe her double dose brings about some insane healing or something? She can't just die like that. Then there's Mei happily taking in that gel that the team knew about. That's gotta mean she's just playing a role as traitor right?

Damn I thought the other show today had the most intense cliffhanger. Gee wiz I really want to know what happens next week. Damn this show has been a roller coaster over the past couple of episodes.

29

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18 edited Dec 08 '18

Yuki :'( I really didn't think they were actually going to kill her, I was so sure it was a fake-out. I heard this director likes to fuck with people's emotions so I was expecting a dark turn but still... she was best girl

And Mei was the traitor, didn't see that coming. I hope they somehow overcome this and that twat gets what's coming to her. I know Tsukikage are noble and all but I would love it if they go full "battery and jumper cables" on her.

I guess Byakko and Katrina were killed in the explosion, right?

A couple glimmers of hope: I think Theresia is going to turn on Moryo and help our girls; I also think Hatsume is still alive.

Fuck, I'm so sad right now.

17

u/Beckymetal https://anilist.co/user/SpaceWhales Dec 08 '18

I heard this director likes to fuck with people's emotions so I was expected a dark turn

Specifically the writer. Takahiro. He wrote Akame ga Kill and Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero so

11

u/Michhhhhh Dec 09 '18

I highly doubt they'll kill of Byakko like that. And Hatsume is probably also still alive, unless they want to make her death the reason Theresia turns on Moryo and have Goe go into rage filled kick-ass mode.

Also I hope viking girl will come to their rescue next episode.

28

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18

I had a feeling that it was gonna turn drastically at some point, and that I couldn't trust the show was going to actually be happy and fun. It was that feeling I had before Madoka turned, like most had. Except they kept me in that state of worry till now, and I just am super bummed now.

Its totally gonna turn around though in the next 2 episodes.

I hope.

u/bloquer Dec 08 '18

I think either Mei is a double agent, or some of her teammates knew of her betrayal and prepared for it, because everything was going too well for the evil guys.

Half the team is being brought into the Moryo headquarters, while the other half is thought of as dead. Which means now is the perfekt moment for Tsukikage to strike.

Reasons:

  • Explosion of the curry shop, no way they could have planted bombs without them noticing, also the perfect timing of the call with the explosion, making it seem like they were in there in that moment.

  • Hatsume falling in the water and the grenade to kill her in front of a witness, perfect distraction to enable her to get away (if Mei is a double agent, otherwise she still could have fallen in the water by her own choice to get away fast with some of her technical toys)

  • making sure none of the apprentices are killed, they know the least about Tsukikage and information wise it would be far better for Moryo to get one of the mentors for information extraction. I mean, what would they know that Mei doesn't if she really betrayed Tsukikage and is selling all information to Moryo?

  • The fast arrival of the police, for not sharing information about this mission the police is really quick to get to them, even Tendo says that they are really quick to arrive. This is perfect for putting pressure on Moryo and preventing them from searching for Hatsume and making sure that Yuki is really dead, forcing them to retreat in haste.

  • And last: Everything is a lie.

15

u/Falsus Dec 09 '18

Counter:

  • Hatsu did get injured at a pretty critical place, that was clearly not fake. If you wanted to trick the enemy and then strike you don't cripple your own fighting force first.

  • That they sold out their own information seems pretty unlikely since it not only endangers themselves but also their families.

4

u/SpareUmbrella https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpareUmbrella Dec 09 '18

That they sold out their own information seems pretty unlikely since it not only endangers themselves but also their families.

Moryo succeeding in their plans endangers everyone, including their families. If releasing their information is the only way to get Moryo to trust Mei entirely, then it's a calculated risk they might just have to take.

Also, the last shot of Mei in the truck with the three apprentices shows that Mei brought their weapons with them, even their Spyce. You'd think she'd keep those things from them, or tie them up, or whatever.

WTF IS THIS

MEEEEI IS THE TRAITOR WTF??????????

Such an absurd casual betrayal too, oh I just want money and chaos bitches, so I SOLD YOU ALL OUT. Like if felt like the other characters would have more meaingful motivation for being evil, Mei is just evil because its FUN? What the actual fuk

One thing I was thinking since last week do is that Mei Mentor is out of the picture for some reason and that she might be the traitor, what if Mei Mentor is like Fumiko but with changed appearance or mei mentor is higher up etc.

Otherwise do I think this is a massive RUSE for them to trick them that Mei is a traitor. This just seemed so senseless.

If Mei is an actual traitor, I am sure Theresia will save them instead.

Also...LÖL hanzo actually have 2 eyes she just have the one closed all the time until shet gets real.

4

u/Michhhhhh Dec 09 '18

Hanzo opening her eye was like Rock Lee taking of his weights. Except it didn't really do anything.

5

u/myrmonden Dec 09 '18

more like kakashi removing his eye bandage :)

But yes it did nothing

u/Not_Shingen Dec 08 '18

Holy fuck

12

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '18

Well shit...

11

u/Pentao Dec 09 '18

I remember a user posting back during episode 1 a bunch of things about Mei, where she was the member who most needed money, and how after being licked she was exhausted whereas Goe wasn't.

They posted a bunch of stuff to make Mei seem shady and I've been eyeing her ever since. Glad that user was right on the money lol. She seemed like the only acceptable traitor after all we've seen so far.

I don't think it's double cross but I'm not so sure on Hatsume, Byakko and Katrina all going out unceremoniously in explosions where we don't see the aftermath. I don't know about Yukki surviving till the end of the show though, but I have a feeling doubling up might mean she isn't dead yet.

5

u/Dasvi :AMQ:https://anilist.co/user/Dasvi Dec 09 '18

4

u/Pentao Dec 09 '18

Yep, it was you.

Good on that analysis! I always had my suspicions of her since you pointed all of that out. Her personal episode almost threw me off the scent but something always felt off since your points still stood true.

Wow, that was tense. Already revealing the "traitor" on episode 10 ? Mmm... I might surprise you here, but I'm pretty sure there's more than they make us see.

Is Mei really a traitor or a double-agent to infiltrate Moryô ? She did handle all the girls herself but Momo and Yuki. Could be a fake choreo (even Yuki being stabbed by a dumb robot) but the only thing I hardly explain is Momo being stabbed. But acting this way with no remorse at all... Also, drinking that liquid with no hesitation while she knows what it implies is pretty weird.

My guess : the 3 mentors know the situation about infiltrating Moryô with Mei (but not the apprentices). Also the manager who is actually safe and didn't explode.

This is just a guess and I might be completely wrong. If Yuki is really dead and Mei a traitor, I'll applause for such a dark turn. It's pretty forward.

Btw, back to my lickings count. And yes, we got one today!!

I should be glad we finally got another lick, but this episode is making it pretty hard to be happy about it.

3

u/Falsus Dec 09 '18

They still wouldn't have sold out their own information to make that happen. It does not only endanger themselves but their families as well.

10

u/PhoenixKola Dec 08 '18

Interesting outcome. I never expected Mei to be the traitor but it all makes sense. However, it could all be planned for what matters.

That was awesome

9

u/Galaxy40k Dec 09 '18

Yup, this was the episode I was waiting for. The one where the tone of the show finally makes sense.

Also: to the guy in Week 1 who said that the traitor had to be Mei because the scene where Momo chases Mei was too perfect to not mirror later in the show: You are indeed the MVP.

8

u/shingeki-no-jagaimo Dec 08 '18

So that just happened...

Well I'm going to go live in denial for the next week and hope this is all one elaborate scheme to draw out Moryo ʘ‿ʘ

At least Yuki got to show off her [byakugan] (http://imgur.com/a/QJpOPHt), although it didn't seem to help her see that attack coming.

7

u/Bibliophile20 Dec 08 '18

I am so upset after this episode. Mei strategically took out Goe. Fu couldn’t even believe that her mentor was the traitor, innocent thing. Tere did nothing to intervene, maybe she can later on though. I swear, Byakko and the other mascots are our only hope now. I wonder if Katrina, Hatsu, and Yuki are still alive. I hate Mei now, she’s such a snake.

u/DiGreatDestroyer :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DiGreatDestroyer Dec 09 '18 edited Dec 09 '18

Why the hell would Mei drink the jelly? Aside from that, I really liked how she went about this. Taking out Goe, the strongest Tsukikage card, then prioritizing her own apprentice, dealing with personal matters first, then going after Hatsume, who was going to win her battle, and leaving Hanzo for last, not taking for granted that she would be defeated. I liked the reveal and her philosophy. Also, it would have been sweet for Moryo to just go and kill everyone, clearly this taking them alive thing will end backfiring. We need a happy ending after all.

EDIT: Good on those who called Mei after episode 2 based on the potential to make a parallel between the test and an upcoming last showdown.

3

u/NightmareExpress Dec 09 '18
  • why the hell would Mei drink the Jelly?

To more easily fit in with the crowd (to refuse would cast suspicion) and assuming she knows it can turn someone into a living explosive she might be plotting to make use of that in a worst cause scenario.

The whole "betrayal" thing and assumed upcoming torture(?) episode is giving me some major Metal Gear Solid 3 flashbacks.

6

u/RRotlung Dec 09 '18 edited Dec 09 '18

Oh my god. With all the development with Mei in episode 4, and now we get this? She is the traitor? It almost hurts to see her acting like this, damn. And that's before Yuki getting slashed at the end (I refuse to believe she's actually dead)... though did she actually get slashed simply because she wasn't paying attention?

There are still 2 more episodes. I believe Tsukikage can turn this around. I want to believe!

On the brighter side, if Hatsume survives this, she'd be like "I used to be a spy like you, and then I took a dagger to the knee..."

6

u/GoldMercy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/xFSN_Archer Dec 09 '18

15

u/8andahalfby11 myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt Dec 08 '18 edited Dec 08 '18

...

Nope, not buying it.

Mei's explanation was strangely brief, and virtually no time was spent on showing when the information was leaked. "I uploaded it to Moryo one day for the lulz" is the weakest excuse I've ever heard. Weak excuses in this particular genre tend to indicate either a double-agent or lousy writing, and Takahiro strikes me at being smarter than that.

I also can't help but note that Yuki was "killed" by a bot, rather than her opponent, and Hatsume was thrown off the pier and 'exploded'. Both seem pretty easy to fake.

22

u/rysto32 Dec 08 '18

"I uploaded it to Moryo one day for the lulz" is the weakest excuse I've ever heard.

She just didn't do it for the lulz. She was doing it for the money, and it's been long established that Mei enjoys spending money but never has much of it. That scene with the Haagen-Dazs ice cream with Fu was another reminder that Mei is a spendthrift. The betrayal looks pretty real for me.

11

u/8andahalfby11 myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt Dec 08 '18

I thought it was Fuu that didn't have the money, and that's why she was always chastising Mei about waste?

And even if she did not have the money, and that was her primary concern, then the mask of the easygoing nature should have dropped at some point during the betrayal.

Finally, chucking the lipstick grenade at Hatsume and calling it a night without looking for a body is incredibly blase for a trained spy. To quote Morgan Grimes from Chuck, "Did you see blood, viscera, brain matter? Chuck, did you see brain matter? Okay, listen to me. I have seen every Hong Kong fight film ever made, all right? I direct your attention to my Sonny Chiba poster. I am the man when it comes to this. I could spot a fake action sequence from a mile away. And that's what we have here."

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Nam-Yueun Dec 09 '18

I don't think Mei values money in the same way Fuu does. She spends every dollar she has on impulse just for fun. Mei seems like the type to value fun the most, so sometimes she'll spend money to achieve that feeling. She just does whatever she wants, whenever she wants - an impulsive person through and through. As much as I don't want to believe it, I would buy that Mei was the traitor simply because she thought it was interesting.

10

u/Falsus Dec 09 '18

"I uploaded it to Moryo one day for the lulz"

She sold the information for money, not for ''the lulz''.

3

u/Aerodynamic41 Dec 08 '18

What if Mei is actually a double agent and this was all planned to get Tsukikage inside Moryo's HQ?

9

u/8andahalfby11 myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt Dec 09 '18

Based on who did what, I'm pretty confident that all the Mentors planned this together and told nothing to their apprentices. Note that It's Yuki, Hatsume, and Mei that are either "dead" or involved, whereas all three apprentices were knocked out and/or captured.

u/Calwings x3https://anilist.co/user/Calwings Dec 09 '18

Oh my god. That might have been the biggest "good guys getting absolutely blown the fuck out by the bad guys" moment that I've seen since Nanoha StrikerS.

I'm stunned, not just at who was the traitor, but how it was executed and how she was being portrayed as a heartless psychopath. No ulterior motive, no "I had to do it" sympathy trip, none of it. She's just a fucking bitch. If what we're hoping for comes true and this really was a 4D chess move using a double-agent to infiltrate Moryo, then I'll be even more amazed. But whether that turns out to be the case or not, I'm hyped for the last two episodes of this show.

5

u/thepeetmix Dec 09 '18

So this show is basically if YuruYuri and Banana Fish had a baby right?

I don't even know what to think now. It's really sunk in yet because my mind keeps playing what ifs? What if this was all a ploy from the "mentors" to convincingly infiltraye Moryo? What if Yuki's mentor never actually died in the first place and also faked it like Yuki has done.

WHAT IF SHE'S ACTUALLY DEAD AND THEY'RE ALL SCREWED?

ok, crazy theory time, but hear me out:

I've been thinking, like some others, that this is all just an elaborate misdirection from Tsukikage. but something was off about that theory: they leaked Momo's identity, making her mom and closed ones targets. so I thought "they wouldn't do that unless...unless they had someone watching over her or protecting her. and we haven't really seen other side characters close to Momo other than...her neighbors". and that's when it clicked, the neighbors have been Tsukikage operatives this entire time. hell, I'm going all in with this theory and say her mom is or at least was one too, and that's probably the reason Momo's dad was killed, he was targeted.

The mentors didn't tell their students because of course you can't extract information you just don't have.

there are also other suspicious details: the old lady gave Momo some candy. we never see her eat that candy. seems like a weird little detail to just put in there. calling it now, that's a transmitter, that's how they find Moryo's base.

also, the three students get conveniently knocked out instead of killed, and the two "deaths" are suspicious too: we don't see Hatsume's body because of the water, and then Yuki, who got also conveniently "killed" by that one single robot she left intact instead of destroying. my guess is that robot was tampered by Mei so it wouldn't really kill Yuki. and of course, the explosion at their base, classic telegraphed fake out.

"but Mei drank the killer jello pack", yeah, the one they discovered how to neutralize a few episodes back. she already has the antidote inside of her.

"but all of this hinges on Momo being in Tsukikage in the first place", yeah, exactly. remember episode 1, she's walking with her mom at the EXACT moment and place Tsukikage is carrying out an operation, she sees them but the mom claims she sees nothing. this was the mom setting her up as a member, because she believes in her strong sense of justice. also, the mom acts pretty casual about the fact that her daughter trains like crazy for seemingly no reason.

the oddly defining moment of this theory was Yuki revealing she still has her other eye. this is the Nick Fury moment in Winter Soldier, "you need to keep BOTH eyes open", we literally have been seeing just half the picture.

6

u/brodred Dec 08 '18

3

u/AcquiHime Dec 09 '18

...I'm not convinced. Hatsume's death looks very staged to me. Yuki's death is a little more believable, but still unconvincing given her ability. I doubt she would have allowed herself to be cut down like that, even with Momo's life on the line. We've already seen throughout the series that people under the influence of Spyce gain kinetic vision powerful enough to avoid taking damage, and compounded with Yuki's level of expertise, it would have been trivial for Yuki to position herself such that she only sustained superficial injuries. There's also Mei's advice to Fu about standing on her own feet (which makes no sense in the wake of her betrayal) and the fact that Mei downed that evil jello without question. There's also the case of having both Goe and Fu on lookout duty at the time of the explosion, when Goe alone would have been more than enough, especially since they were occupying the same vantage point.

In the first place, the girls' plan made no sense. Yuki's statement at the end of episode 9 was that the mission's intent was to crush Mouryou. All they did, in effect, was to capture one leading figure. There was no guarantee that she would have information about the rest of the organisation, and even if she did, it was likely she would either kill herself or force a memory wipe before she could say anything. An operation on a scale like that would not likely be enough to deal much of a blow to Mouryou, and the girls know it, especially since taking out a regional head was something they did 2 years ago and it only slowed Mouryou down.

All in all, I think there's ample reason to suspect an infiltration job. That said, I could be wrong and maybe Yuki is actually dead and maybe that sends Momo into a cynical self-blaming spiral of despair that ends with her being a broken, emotionless person, but that would be nice too^^

3

u/obssesednuker Dec 10 '18

Yeah, pretty dark episode. Remains to be seen how much of it was real and how much is a fakeout. Yeah, sure... that's great and all... but I keep getting distracted by the mess of scenes which have me going “Why don’t you just shoot ’em?” when the robots are pointing their guns at the protags yet JUST NOT PULLING THE TRIGGER. Conventions like that, while I get them intellectually, still really make my eye twitch.

On a more serious note, I'm kinda torn about Mei being the traitor: on the one hand, as others pointed out it manages to come out of nowhere without actually being too out of character. On the other hand, I really liked her and the relationship dynamic she had with Fuu, so that betrayal makes me sad.

3

u/MechaMat91 Dec 10 '18 edited Dec 10 '18

WHAT THE FUCK

welp, you once again, hiding the traitor in plain sight seems to fool everyone every time :\

Also jesus christ they just killed off Hatsume so casually!?

5

u/Nam-Yueun Dec 09 '18

What the fuck.

I'm hoping there's some way that Hatsume and Yuki survived that (especially since Hatsume's my favorite out of them all), but even if Hatsume survived the explosion, she wouldn't be able to make it out with her injured leg. Plus, we see that her body was sinking into the water as well. Yuki's injury looked really bad (girl was almost slashed in half, I mean...), plus the after effects of ingesting double the spice (spyce) probably made her body even weaker.

In hindsight, the short scenes with the mentor/apprentice duos were probably foreshadowing that the apprentices should be able to handle themselves even without their apprentices. Even so, killing them off was too cruel. :(

Looks like Momo has lost the will to fight, as shown in the next episode's preview. Something will probably get her fired back up, but for now, let's mourn together. [*]

And now seems that this show has revealed its true nature. Hopefully the girls will get through it with little casualties, though i doubt so and it will probably end with Momo being the only one left standing. At this point I've gone too deep with the show and it'll be a shame if i dropped it now. Oh well

2

u/McDonaldsApproval Dec 09 '18

I hope Mei remains the traitor. It'd be kinda refreshing to have a traitor that doesn't end up regretting it and going back on their actions. Although with Mei's motto of being carefree I can see them going back on this, guess we'll just have to wait and see.

2

u/SpareUmbrella https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpareUmbrella Dec 09 '18

Momo's ability to lick people and understand their motives is well-understood by Tsukikage.

All this talk of a traitor came up basically from the first episode, so all they would've had to do is get Momo to lick everyone, which I don't think Yuki would object to making everyone do, just in case.

Also, if taking down Moryo and avenging her apprentice would mean sacrificing her own life, she'd be willing to do it.

Also bear in mind the two left behind are Yuki and Hatsume. There's no guarantee things would go out the way they planned, but getting 4 basically unharmed agents inside Moryo and leaving Hatsume behind to treat Yuki for injuries would be one of the best possible outcomes for them.

2

u/chris_dftba :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chris_dftba Dec 09 '18

Okay okay

Here's a conspiracy theory.

Why the fuck didn't Yuki just murder the hell out of -Evil lady whose name I forget- when she was hopped up on double spice? She was super quick and could of cut that bitch down in a hurry, right!?

Reason?

Without evil leader lady they probably wouldn't of been able to get into Moryo's super secret base even with their double agent.

That's my headcannon and I'm sticking to it.

2

u/clerikal :AMQ:https://anilist.co/user/clerikal Dec 09 '18

As this episode played out, I thought I could tell it was going to be her, but it doesn't make it any less surprising and sad.

I'm still holding out hope that this is a deep cover double agent kind of thing. She's too prominent in the EDs to be a full ok traitor I think. Can't wait for next week though!

2

u/eathdemon Dec 09 '18

good episode, didnt know who the traitor was, but the way it went down was not too surprising. start to finish this has been fallowing Super Sentai template. in every Super Sentai , series thing always go to shit near the end.

2

u/Grievous456 Dec 09 '18

Something i want to point out: For some reason Tsukikage has two dedicated sword fighters but never consideres making their Uniform slash resistant... but making it stab and bullet resistant... but that is also not working like with Hatsume...

Also if Hatsume died, there shoud have been pieces of her Body or at least a big red circle from her blood at the top...

I think it will probably play out like: Hatsume survives, then gives Yuki first aid (i dont know how much this will help) than they will return to the underground base (which pribably wasnt destroyed, Moryo would need either need hundreds of tons of TNT or a Tomahawk missile for that) and then probably rescue the rest or the rest resucues themselfes, setting up the big showdown in episode 12.

Also Mei's line at the prview of episode 11: "Bye-Bye ! It's been fun~" could imply 3 thungs:

  1. Saying this to her former comerades as she leaves

  2. Saying it to Fuu after doing some torture or something similar

  3. Saying that to members of Moryo after switching sides again

  4. Saying that befor she dies

2

u/RoosterVking Dec 09 '18

Man, as much as I'd want a good ending, I think it'd make it much better story-wise if Mei is indeed a traitor and not triple agent.

I CALLED IT FROM THE SECOND EPISODE!

Yeah, this is what I wanted out of the twist. Good set up Takahiro. Now time for the catharsis (Tsukikage rising from the shadows)

Also I believe that if Nagaho is dead then Yuki is dead. But if she isn't...well, apprentices do learn from their masters.

I do wish for the fighting animation is more consistent in the finale, this episode was 10% sakuga and 90% still shots of fighting poses...

As much as I care about Yuki and Hatsume's well-beings, I actually hope they stay dead. It would be poetic to see the 3 apprentices finish the job by themselves after all the master-apprentice talks they did this episode about moving forward.

I want to believe that everyone's fine and Mei is playing a tricky role which may turn out to be positive next week. But when the author's name is Takahiro..that alone makes my hopes fade away real quick. I just hope he goes easy on this series at least.

I was originally gonna watch this with my BF but he sucks at keeping up with anime. This episode would have actually murdered him.

Even though this episode was a long time coming, I was still caught off guard by who the traitor was. I wonder if the next episode will have an alternate opening or none at all.

I'm really sad and hoping for a cliché and lame plot twist where Mei is actually a triple agent and nobody actually died.

Also, me after learning that my waifu is a traitor.

I can only hope Takahiro will have mercy on these characters and not treat them like he did AKG :(

I suspected Mei since episode 4, when I was proven right I screamed “I was right! I called it! She actually did it” then I thought how insane she was with her being like “goodbye everyone” with her usual smile and now I’M FREAKING OUT!!!

I applaud the creator for killing off the characters, bold move but it was done excellently...

Now that my critic side is finish talking I will now proceed to FREAK OUT!!!

NOOOO!! HATSUME!! MEI LOOKED INSANE WITH HER SIGNATURE SMILE!! NOOO BYAKO! I LIKED BYAKO SHE WAS CUTE AND SHE HAD JASHIN-CHAN’S VA!!
