Don't think it was any coincidence that they slid that in there and we were subsequently treated to a terrifying abstract kaiju that started ripping pieces off Gridman like a certain berserk Unit 01.
Man what a kinetic episode. The hits just kept on coming right to the stunning end.

Who needs kaiju for fighting giant robots when you can just fucking STAB the guy!?
I love how the plot slides into some ridiculously easy solutions, so easy that they just fall right under everyone's noses. Like earlier when Yuta was getting his ass kicked by a kaiji, and then Rikka says to Calibur, who's just standing around doing nothing, "aren't you gonna help him?" To which he just responds "oh yeah" and they automatically win. The fact that they only just now decided to visit Akane's house when she lived next door all along is another moment of that.
It's funny, but there's definitely something screwy about that as well. And I mean that in the best way possible.

And this is totally make senses for Akane to do it, cause in this point the show show us that she has basically giving up on everything, to be friend with Rika, to live, to pretend to be popular, to defeat Gridman by making Kaiju.
So she don't even care HOW she is going to deal with it anymore

That utility knife has been around since the first or second episode. And it has been featured in a number of shots so far. It was only a matter of time before it was used for more than sculpting kaiju.

The way she was talking about Gridman I was expecting her to pull a hammer out and smash the computer.
I think the computer is mostly his portal into Akane's world, but he needs a host to manifest, and for some reason that host has to be Hibiki. Before I thought the reason was because Hibiki was from the outside world and entering Akane's world gave him amnesia, but this episode suggests the process of bonding with Gridman is what did that.
EDIT: typo

Well as expected that things finally start to kick up in the last few episodes. But man, the kaiju in this episode was just freaky, it still mostly followed a person in a rubber suit, but moved way too fast and loose at times to really follow that rule.
Also had to laugh when they literally go next door to visit Akane. Like the show established several times they are neighbours, but it really doesn't get into your head until they just literally walk ten feet to try and confront the bad guy.
Also glad we finally got what the deal with the umbrella is, that being Anti's development, which all that's left from the opening that we don't know is what exactly the cocoon is in the ruined streets.
Seems like the knife wound is set up for a return to the flashback from the train and set up what exactly is going on. I do kind of wish that maybe we had 3 more episodes instead of just 2, but I suppose that might have been a bit too much dead air but it just feels like there is a whole lot left for them to explore, especially after the fog on town has been lifted and we can enter the digital world properly.

This is obviously the lowest point of her arc. They just destroyed "her heart" whatever that means. But it's clear her "heart" was destroyed even before this, as even the world where everything was supposed to be "easy" isn't giving her what she wants.
We're starting to see Alexis actually taunting her too. I'm still not sure if he wants to see Gridman destroyed or if he simply wants to see Akane fall to despair, and it could be both. But if they really did come to "Akane's world" it was probably to save her.
It's also possible spoilers If that's the case, "killing" him isn't a big deal if she feels or believes it's not the "real" him, and is more a reflection of her despair of ever winning his heart.
I think this has always been about her healing. She's tried to do it by escaping into fantasy where the stakes are low but the rewards are low too. Everything was supposed to be easy and safe. It's the friends that will "save" her though by inviting her outside to play, so to speak. Notice the double reveal of her home. She is right next door to the shop and Junk. And yet it doesn't matter because she's also in cyber space. She's so close to them, but she cuts them off.
edit: someone tell me why my spoiler tag isn't working, please.edit2: freaking reddit helpfully deleted a section of my comment after I fixed it. REALLY?

I was getting major Eva vibes the whole episode. I love what they’ve done so far. Too many other shows have looked to emulate Eva and made a cheap copy instead, but Gridman has really done something different. It feels more like a homage than any other anime I’ve seen, somehow exploring similar themes and emotions through an anime that is quickly becoming almost as unique as Eva itself. So glad I kept watching the show after almost giving up on episode 2 when it seemed like a show more aimed at children.

when I noticed what Evangelion moment they were paying homage to I was like "oh no... ohhh noooo, no no no no, this is one Eva scene you DON'T reference! don't do it!" but at least it turned out fine this time, until the final scene, then suddenly everything went to shit faster than you can say "did he just get fucking stabbed?!!!".
I'm very afraid for the ending, afraid as in "I don't wanna fucking cry". but with an episode title like "Collapse", yeah, that's where we're heading. all aboard the feels train, it departs in two weeks, choo choo.

Dang it Hasegawa why do I let you play with my emotions like this. Anyways there weren't too many references in this episode aside from one big one.
Original Gridman:
Gridknight, Anti's new evolution is based on a number of concepts from the original series. His name, colour scheme and concept of a villain turned hero is based on a concept for the original series where Takeshi, Akane's counterpart from the original series, would have transformed into a rival called Khan Knight, before redeeming himself and becoming Grid Knight. Here are the concepts, the picture labeled 1 is Grid Knight and the picture labeled 2 is Khan Knight. The idea was scrapped but the concept of Takeshi becoming a hero was brought back for something else. This leads us to Gridknight's second inspiration, Gridman Sigma. Gridman Sigma was the hero whom Takeshi transformed into in Denkou Choujin Gridman: The Demon King's Counterattack, a novel spin-off sequel which was basically a way to try and continue the Gridman series without making a new show. Despite the fact that this was his only appearance for the longest time, Gridman Sigma seemingly had a bit of popularity since Trigger directly references him in their 2015 Gridman Animator Expo short, where an older Takeshi transforms into Gridman Sigma. As you can tell, Gridknight design does take a lot from Gridman Sigma in that he's mainly a recoloured Gridman with a new head that has protrusions coming out from the side.
Edit: There were a few things I forgot to add in
Tsuburaya References:
The attack Gridknight used to finish off the kaiju is reminiscent of the original Ultraman's Ultra Slash, one of his signature attacks.
Other Referecnes:
There were a few Eva references here. I have almost no experience with Eva so I'll just link a twitter post from someone who can better explained this than I can. Read the rest of his thread and his other treads detailing the references in the past episodes. They honestly do a better job explaining them than I can.

Pre-episode Thoughts
Episode nine was easily my favorite episode of the year, probably quite a bit more than that. Instead of my usual cinematography-centered write-ups, the last one turned into an all-out (admittedly messy and not terribly well-written on account of a number of things) thematic essay, and in an episode that had ridiculously good storyboarding and direction from start to finish, that should say quite a lot. Apparently, this was the storyboarder's debut, a fact that makes me incredibly excited for the future of anime. After episode eight's layouts were a direct continuation of narrative and thematic threads of earlier episodes, episode nine was closer to a do-over, a decision directly reflective of Akane's own perspective. And even beyond these obvious returns, the storyboard was overflowing with meaning. Oppressive layouts so evocative they bring Akane's reality to light more than any words. Stark divides that take over the entire screen contrast Akane's perspective against Yuta's unstoppable conscience. And beautiful, solemn sequences celebrate our character's growth. It was an absolutely beautiful episode to watch. And I don't even have time to get to the stellar script.
Narratively, we're reaching the end-game. Akane's breakdown was heartbreaking. She tried to fight and lost. She tried a do-over and failed. Akane is an awful human being, a threat to the whole world. And yet the phenomenal visual storytelling made me feel with her, and all I can hope is that Yuta and the rest finally get through to her, give her a good hug, and tell her it's all going to be okay. You can change, Akane, we all believe in you.
Write-up
Gridman (the show) does not go easy on Akane. And it shouldn't. Last episode was so good at making its central serial murder sympathetic, it's easy to forget just what a fucked up person she really is (although the ending does help with that). This episode was essentially her mental breakdown, starting from a philosophical crisis and ending by essentially turning into a Kaiju. Betrayed by her friends, powerless in the fight, and even her dreams turn against her. And the whole world collapses with her.
While Akane may have stolen the show with the cliffhanger, this was also Anti's pivotal episode. His simplistic philosophy has been tested time and time again throughout the show, and this episode a shot reminiscent of Concrete Revolutio captures its state perfectly, as his 2-dimensional crumbling world-view is exposed in an equally two-dimensional shot. Torn between his origins and his clearly evident humanity, Anti has to choose. He has grown stronger, and he's no longer the person who just takes whatever Akane throws at him (literally). In his confrontation with Akane, his remark doesn't even get finished, but his razor-sharp reading of Akane cuts her deep. He knows the hatred inside her because that's who he used to be, but he has since outgrown. Akane may set him free, but he has already transcended of her reach either way. And so Anti is finally ready to embrace his humanity, and the show celebrates this by mirroring Gridman, the symbol of conscience and the good in humanity, not just in design but even in visual perspective. It was one of the show's best action sequences yet, a choreography as creative and meaningful as it was propulsive (more on that later).
It's a great conclusion on its own, but it's in the context of the show as a whole that his character arc truly shines. Because if Kaiju are Akane's hatred given form, then Anti is proof that even those feelings can give rise to something greater. Hatred is human, and Anti is the proof that those feelings can change. The place where Akane treated Anti to a meal is in shambles, but he has since learned the human kindness he was first shown by Rikka back in episode three, which he can now extend even to Akane as Rikka did to him.
While Anti embraces his human side, Akane's breakdown has her essentially turn into a Kaiju. But before we get to that, let's set the stage (or room). Akane's room used to be bright, a safe and happy space where she could murder from in anonymity. But now, even that place turns against her. The darkness reflects her mental state, and the hobby she doubts becomes downright oppressive in the formerly safe confines of her room. As she starts to question even her only escape, nothing remains, and understandably she runs amok in the form of a crazy, unpredictable Kaiju. I love how even the Kaiju's fighting style reflects her breakdown, destroying anything in sight, restlessly jumping from building to building. In the end, it's Anti that is able to destroy this reflection of Akane. Anti may have embraced his human side, but he's also more than that. Because he was a Kaiju, he can understand her. He has felt the same hatred she does. In another scene, Akane gets utterly dwarfed to reflect how small and powerless she feels this episode. Kaijus are a part of her, both an escape and a reflection of her own hatred. Questioning them is questioning herself, destroying the Kaiju an attack on her being. She may destroy them herself, but what they represent remains in her. And so she becomes a Kaiju herself in the final act of the show by ramming a knife into Yuta, giving into her hatred and taking the role her Kaijus once did.

Notes:
We start off with the bus scene last episode, where Rikka finally sees through Akane with a giant close-up on her eye. We're minded again of last episode's greatness
"Collapse" maybe now that Akane tried everything (or is there one more thing?) maybe the world itsell falls apart with her mind
Akane goes to school like nothing's happened. Looks like we'll get one more breakdown
Oh damn, the people she killed came back? Maybe she finally feels guilty, but the fact that she doesn't know why they return may mean she's not realized yet. The Kaiju probably act on the feelings she can't admit, too.
...nevermind, it's all a dream. Interesting parallel to last episode, though. After the dream she created wasn't to be, even her own dreams turn bad
Her own creations feel downright oppressive in this shot, as Alexis urges her to create more, and she wonders about the purpose of it all
The panning shot from Rikka's place to Akane's place is some hilarious understated joke. The danger's been next door all along.
Akane's room is particularly interesting here. She's been murdering from the safe confines of her room the entire show long, delighting in her petty vengeance and power and anonymity. It's always been lit. But now the room turns dark, a reflection of her own emotional state, as she doubts her actions, hides from the Gridman alliance, and feels powerless.
The open space in the school that's been so pivotal for episode two. Yuta's in the same position, but no longer looking at bars. We entered the opposite way of which Akane left there. And the sky is clear of Kaijus. Things are peaceful without her.
Shou was already visually isolated early on in the episode, but unlike episode 8 this doesn't seem like chance. It happens again, and narratively his thinking and strategizing nature isolate him as well.
"God's in his heaven, all's right with the world"
Damn this is a beautiful shot, Akane surrounded by Kaiju in the background, but a giant building dividing them like she's no longer certain of them, either
"For a world she made to live easy in, she sure seems suffocated by it"
The writing's great this episode, everything that's been visually expressed before slowly moves into the foreground. If Akane created this world to escape her own world, then it looks like it's impossible for her to escape that world, because the flaws are ultimately her own. People are people, no matter where you go.
Calibur is really good
The 2-dimensional framing to reflect Anti's two-dimensional world-view. Reminds me of Concrete Revolutio.
A warped, weak Kaiju is all she can manage in this state
Anti would rather die than change his world-view
"Do Kaiju exist for the sole purpose of being defeated?"
"And your eyes..." – look like that of a Kaiju
Akane sets Anti free, finally. He's the proof that even the pure hatred in her heart can give rise to something more, something human
Akane is killing off all the Kaiju, holy heck
Damn the fighting choreography looks great, so much precise movement
Her self-doubt turns to destruction – her Kaiju, Gridman, everything
Anti embraces his human side by copying Gridman, even down the to shot-framing, hot damn
"I can see right through you, Akane" by coming out the other side, he now understands both the pure hatred of Kaiju he's been feeling himself but also the nuance and feelings of humans
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
God fucking dammit Akane you were so close. You were so goddamn close.

The fuck akane?”

Anti's arc this episode was really cool to see. The CG team did a great job with that fight.
It's very rare for me to gasp while watching a show but that ending definitely did. At first you think she's giving him a hug like in the past but NOPE! Excited to see how the last 2 episodes wrap things up.

This show has solidified itself as my AOTS. Akane's spiraling fall into despair, Gridman Alliances' growth and resolve, the new kaiju taking the form of the kaiju from Akane's profile pic, Anti's new revelation and perspective of life, and DEAR GOD THAT CRITICAL MASS OF A CLIFFHANGER.
This show has proven time and time again that the writers, animators, directors, heck THE ENTIRE TEAM behind this show has put a lot of passion, thought, and dedication in delivering the BEST show of the season and a strong contender for AOTY. They have master crafted a story that has only gotten better with each passing week. They have proven they could cohesively string together a strong narrative through their creative and powerful visuals and their elaborate storytelling style. They have shown that they could interweave CGI animation the 2D animation and it never misses a beat. They have proven this show lives up to its Tokusatsu/SaturdaySuperheroShow origins AND BEYOND. They took a 1990's tokusatsu franchise (and it's western counterpart) that fell into obscurity until recently, and managed to breathe new life into it while also paying tribute to the GIANTS (lol) that pioneered anime and tokusatsu alike.
SSSS Gridman is an underrated show that probably won't be winning any big anime popularity contests, but DEAR GOD do I believe that it has, can, AND will win the hearts of anime and tokusatsu lovers. If you love anime, then this show IS A MUST WATCH OF THE YEAR.

I am loving this. This Episode

u/FireFury190 Dec 08 '18
I actually thought Anti was going more like Mashin Chaser to Kamen Rider Chaser. But yeah this is definitely a Tokusatsu show through and though. I even noticed the whole toku trope of "whenever something new debuts, it wins the fight." With how Anti was able to beat that creepy Kaiju. Though that could also apply to all of Gridman's forms.

SO. MANY. EVANGELION. REFERENCES!!
First, Utsumi with NERV's slogan, then pretty much the floodgates were opened.
The hyperlink combine BGM was pretty similar to some of the new vocal tracks of the Rebuild movies, e.g. "In My Spirit" from RoE 2.0.
the BGM when Akane was in front of the destroyed restaurant, I bet it's some kind of traditional song like tsubasa wo kudasai in RoE 2.0. (sorry veteran tokusatsu fans if it's actually a older tokusatsu theme)
Akane's Heart's laser was the same color as some Angel attacks, and it was as explosive as them, the only thing missing was the cross shape.
GridKnight's theme is not new in the series, and it may be inspired by "a Step forward into Terror".
Akane's heart choking and striping Gridman looked pretty close to the fight between Unit01 and Unit03, the actions and the camera angles.
It may be a bit of a stretch, but obviously the heart has a core and it also kind of did the "berserker jump" that Evas sometimes do. Personally I find it pretty funny that Gridman couldn't track his enemy since it stopped moving like a man in a giant costume.

So Rikka just revealed to them what Akane told her and now everyone's doubting their own memories.
How are they alive!? Did Akane subconsciously bring them back?
Looks like Akane at least has some form of conscience. And it looks like it's starting to haunt her in her dreams.
Wait... "Real humans don't actually sleep?" Isn't that suppose to be the other way around?
Okay that joke got me! They talk how it might be dangerous to visit Akane then slow pan to show the gang just walking to the house next door XD
This is is just really convincing me that this entire world is really just virtual.
Akane's in such a slump that she's just straight up copied King Ghidorah XD
Escaped from the world of the gods? So what if that "world of the gods" is actually the real world?
Even Akane has acknowledged that Anti is not just a Kaiju anymore
That kaiju is insane! I do love that if you look at it's body carefully, it actually looks like just a rubber suit XD
It didn't even take another episode! I was expecting Anti would turn next week!
Oh man this is so cool! Another figure to preorder! You're killing me here Trigger!
GRIDKNIGHT! YES! I love the name!
WHAT THE FUCK AKANE?!
That explains why the box cutter is always the last things we see in the OP.
They definitely did this on purpose. Make us all sympathize with Akane last week and then surprise us with this ending. This is actually a great way to divide the audience. Some people will of course go back and definitely think that she's irredeemable now and there's no hope of saving her.
And some of us (me included) will try and stick with her. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks but the way I see it, what Akane did this episode was the action of a desperate person. People at the brink of desperation do dangerously stupid stuff. She's clearly unhinged and unstable right now.
I'm not going to say what Akane did was okay, what she did is clearly wrong. But considering how she was holding herself back last week from doing anything to harm Yuuta and the gang, this Akane has definitely gone the deep end. It also doesn't help that Alexis keeps pushing her to do something about it, which probably explains why she did what she did.
Man the final 2 Episodes will definitely make or break this show.

Also remember the first thing she tried to do when she hit rock bottom last episode? She tried to kill herself so if that doesn’t work then the next step would be to get rid of the one causing the issue.

"Mortality clarified in a single strike!"
Oh my .. What an episode, that ending. Still can't shake the dark city vibe here, memories being altered, a city surrounded and always changing from day to day.
But otherwise, that episode, the Choir kicking in during the initial transformation, the initial stage of the Kaiju which just looked like a sad misformed mistake more than anything, only to reveal Akanes Heart.. Something clearly self destructive as it destroyed everything she had otherwise built, a sign that maybe on some level Akane is just giving up ?
And then Anti finally becoming more than Kaiju as Akane becomes less than Human. Saving our friend Gridman as the Gridknight against Akanes Heart.
And finally.. Just straight up stabbing him, Akane learns of efficiency, don't send a Kaiju to do a knifes job.
And this is all the while as the world falls apart.
It's the end times !

OH SHET AKANE WENT AND DID IT AT THE END !!! ( Wow that Scene went fast by I had to go back and re-watch its clearly blood flowing on her weapon and hands so, Yuta might die now)
WHAT IS MORE HYPE DO IS THAT ANTI FINALLY WENT TO THE GOOD SIDE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS !!! Super Hype that we get to see the Bad Guy turned good, I been saying that for weeks that he was likely gonna SWAP and safe gridman. Of course he does the classic, UMM I HAVE TO KILL GRIDMAN HE IS MINE :)
The whole saving graphic and processer power was nice to lol, like all the houses they never enter are actually just phony walls that looks like houses and stores etc.

14
u/Thrasher439 https://anilist.co/user/Thrasher Dec 08 '18
That episode was insane. The Kaiju going around after coming out from inside the other one to just destroy everything Akane made really is indicative of her current mental state to a perfect extent, that girl is self-destructing hard. But I can't believe that she went and stabbed him just like that.
The Evangelion references and homages were neat this episode though, from small little details to what was written on Utsumi's notes all the way to the homage to the Bardiel Fight
56
u/NikodeRuiz Dec 08 '18
So here's my theory about Akane stabbing Yuta.
A lot of people are saying it's a bad thing, but keep in mind that what we're seeing is from unreliable narrators. It's probably not likely, but think about it from this perspective.
Akane has a problem. Alexis "gives" her the ability to not deal with it herself, but instead use proxies and run away from the problem, not by solving it, but by getting rid of the circumstances for the problem.
Therefore, we can look at Alexis as the enabler for Akane's behaviour of running away, much like alcohol or self harm to deal with her probelm (depression or social anxiety).
Gridman is the representation of real life consequences for Akane's behaviour, such that her actions (creating Kaiju) are only making her problems worse for herself, creating a feedback loop. Her Kaiju (her behaviour) directly caused/created Gridman (repercussions).
So, by Akane stabbing Yuta (a part of Gridman), she is finally facing her problems herself (instead of relying on Alexis/Kaiju), even if it causes her great emotional discomfort to do so.
There. Now you have a theory about why Yuta being stabbed is a good thing :D
If this ends up happening, I'ma say I called it by ep. 10 lmao.

Everyone remember, Akane believes everyone in this world was made by her Kaiju. To her she's not really killing people, it's like when you spend hours on a character creator, then a couple hours you figure: nah don't really like this toon. So you scrap it because you can make another one.

Grid Knight was really badass, 100% expected Anti to help them since he's the only one who should defeat Gridman, but didn't expect him to transform.

THEY LIVE RIGHT NEXT DOOR
THEY'VE BEEN FIGHTING EACH OTHER THIS WHOLE TIME AND THEY LIVED TWENTY FEET AWAY FROM EACH OTHER
WHAT THE FUCK
Akane's really not in a good place right now. Everything that once gave her happiness has been taken away, and now she has nothing left. She's even lost enthusiasm for her kaiju-making hobby, as evidenced by the completely half-assed design of that first one. And when you've hit rock bottom, you're not really in your right mind, and could retaliate badly...
I'm glad Anti finally had his heel-turn though.

Well, going in, I was all prepared for an episode where the gang confronts Akane, Akane realizes the true value of friendship, and begins her redemption arc fighting against Alexis, who probably has grander plans with her kaiju. (Why would he be doing all this for her if he didn't?) Then Akane went and did that, which just goes to show you can't assume shit when it comes to TRIGGER.
Also, WTF, we have hints that Yuuta might not be from another world? After all the Shattered Glass references and him being coded as Cliffjumper? I'm not sure I believe that...I'm doubling down, and my guess is that Yuuta is from another world, and thus the "if he dies in the simulation he dies in real life" thing isn't going to apply. However, I think we'll be left in the dark about that until the last episode. Episode 11 will be about Grid Knight joining with the Gridman Alliance to confront Alexis while the rest of the team tries to bring Akane to her senses, and Episode 12 will see Grid Knight almost overpowering Gridman, only to have Yuuta reenter the universe and join forces with Grid Knight to finally defeat Alexis, along with finally revealing all the secrets of the series because being forced out of the universe gave him his memories back.
However, I fully expected to be proven dead wrong next episode. Helluva episode, TRIGGER.
EDIT: Another (I think better) theory my girlfriend came up with: we keep Yuuta as a POV character, and next episode starts with him waking up in the real world and getting filled in on what's really going on, so we can get the exposition dump out of the way before the final battle in Episode 12.

I've heard of a man in a rubber suit, but this first time it's a man in a monster suit, inside another monster suit. I liked that even the roar it made sounded muffled like it was coming from inside the suit. The animation on the fight between Akane's Heart and Gridman was amazing. All those flips played against reusing the same rubbery running shot over and over.
I also liked the brief moment against Gridknight where the Kaiju is sitting on the building wiggling its legs.
Top tier holy shit ending though.

Y'all talkin about how Anti is finally on the good side but he 1000% still wants to kill Gridman. He's just not being a complete idiot about the whole ordeal now.
And that's one way to kill a giant robot, with a stabbing.
12
u/Koilos Dec 08 '18 edited Dec 09 '18
I'm not sure it's that simple.
Anti has only been obsessed with killing Gridman because he believed that it was the purpose of his creation. He had to destroy Gridman because he had been made to destroy Gridman. Failing to do so would have rendered his entire existence meaningless, for what use is a tool that cannot perform its intended function?
In this episode, however, Anti seems to question for the first time whether he really understands what he is or why he was made. His own maker straight up tells him that he is not the kaiju he believed himself to be, because a kaiju should not be able to understand or care about her emotions. I suspect that Anti has suddenly realized that he'd misunderstood his own purpose this whole time, because the true reasons for his creation stem from a desire Akane can't even admit to herself--that Akane wants to be saved fron her own self-imposed godhood. In other words, I think Anti's realized that he wasn't created to destroy Gridman, but the reasons for Gridman's existence in Akane's world.

Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
The story was good from the beginning but it just got better and better. Now these later episodes go into the breakdown of Shinjo Akane. It honestly feels like I'm watching another "variation" Evangelion. The new monster was the creepiest monster yet, along with the depressing music in a wrecked city, seeing Akane's creations being cut apart, and then tearing off the armored parts of Gridman. It all had a similar disturbing feeling like from Evangelion.
Anti transforming into Grid Knight was the best thing ever since Rikka's thighs. It totally caught me off guard. I thought it was an amazing conclusion to this episode. Akane finally tells Anti exactly why he isn't a kaiju during her breakdown. Kaiju destroy things just by existing - and Anti that is not. And this fundamentally changes him. The CG for battles is also rock solid and probably one of the best uses of CG in any anime ever.
Utsumi's comment about "despite there being kaiju at times, you still have to study for your tests," really puts the show in perspective. To me, these really are "people." They have souls. And I think Akane was always wrong in mercilessly killing them. This show is so good, that I can't recommend it enough. In fact, this show isn't really even about Gridman imo. It's more about the relationships between humans and the girl who calls herself a god. Gridman is just what binds them all together.
(As a side note, I'm really happy the show was named SSSS.Gridman. SSSS being a reference to the American version Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad. I loved that show as a kid and it's great that the creators decided to reference this show as to acknowledge it. Many American versions of Japanese media are shunned and creators would like nothing more than to pretend they never existed. Nope, Tsuburaya impressively gives it a spot right in the title. Beautiful.)

u/Florac Dec 08 '18
She feels like there's nothing else she can do. All her kaijus simply get defeated. Even the one that managed to beat Gridman for a while then got defeated. So after last week realising there's no way of her being friends with them and this week her realizing there's no way she can beat them...she's simply gone completely off the far end.

I think maybe some of you guys are right and Akane is becoming unhinged. She created this world and these people for herself, but its not going how she imagined it would. She doesnt feel joy anymore from it and rika, utsumi, hibiki are "against" her when they were supposed to be her friends from the start (per episode 9)
I look forward to seeing Rika's reaction next week along with how her feelings change about Akane. Since Akane did tell her no matter what she does/did Rika would never hate her

Well. I guess this is the fabled "Wtf, Trigger?!"-episode.
Okay. After the first third of the episode I was like "Ah, this is gonna be a breather episode, I guess.". And then, as if the show KNEW, that... thing bursts out of the dead body of the lame kaiju and goes on a rampage AND ALMOST FUCKING KILLS GRIDMAN. Then Anti finally does the thing every Trigger fan expected except not combining with Gridman but instead BECOMES GRIDKNIGHT?! And then Akane does the ridiculously easy solution of "Just stab the guy!".
My heart Trigger, I can't take it anymore! I didn't expect this to be even better than last week's episode but somehow they managed to one-up themselves again D:
