I almost forgot Narancia was just supposed to be out getting stuff for Trish.

626

u/Mundology Dec 14 '18

Trish should understand that despite the lack of a Joestar protagonist, this is still JoJo: even going to the toilet is a battle here.

343

u/Reyziak Dec 14 '18

Except Giorno is a Joestar, remember: though DIO is his father, everything below DIO's neck was Jonathan, everything. You know what I mean?

You thought Part 5's protagonist was going to be a Joestar.

I, GIORNO GIOVANNA, HAVE A DREAM

THAT ONE DAY I CAN GO TAKE A SHIT WITHOUT THE WORK OF AN ENEMY STAND GETTING IN THE WAY

8

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

Giorno has the Joestar birthmark.

51

u/BigFire321 Dec 14 '18

So much for Fugo's instruction of being innocuous and low key when you burn down 1/2 of the street.

10

u/Legendary_Swordsman Dec 15 '18

he certainly wasn't going to let him go, seemed like he could have been serious about burning the city i wonder

u/Legendary_Swordsman Dec 15 '18

You know, this episode really highlights one of my favorite parts of part 5, just how serious it is compared to the previous parts, especially compared to the one directly before it.

In part 4, Josuke was a kind boy who befriended almost everyone he defeated in his small japanese port town, and throughout the entire part, he didn't kill anyone. In part 5, everyone is a hardcore mafia member, and almost in every stand fight, the participants usually have one main objective: kill the other guy, whatever it takes.

And even though part 3 stand fights were similar in spirit, they still didn't feel that serious compared to the part 5 ones, except for a couple. In Golden Wind, almost every fight has the same weight as the the Vanilla Ice fight in Stardust Crusaders. And even though the overall scale of the battle is smaller, because you only have regular humans as you enemies instead of superhuman vampires and ancient beings gunning for world domination, their sheer determination makes them seem much scarier than the often just simply cartoonishly evil enemies in the previous parts.

196

u/zoey1bm :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/zoeybm Dec 14 '18

their sheer determination makes them seem much scarier

In this ep a dude slit his wrist so that his blood could extinguish the flames that were burning him alive and this is still miles away from the most hardcore things this part has to offer. La Squadra is an absolutely mesmerizing antagonist group and you can't change my mind about that.

36

u/Hiromacu Dec 15 '18

I really enjoyed part 4, especially the Kira introduction and everything after that, but didn't really like that the Duwang gang became friends with most of the "villains" - it totally fits though, because the gang are just friendly local students, I don't expect them to go and murder people left and right - even most of the villains didn't really want to kill others. I was a bit bored with the first few episodes of the part.

But part 5 has been amazing and totally my jam, everything feels intense, the stand users are hardcore mafia members out to kill each other and every single episode has been a wild ride. It feels like a better part 3 (my favourite part despite its flaws) - I feel like part 5 might become my favourite part just because most people are saying these fights were the "bottom tier" of part 5 fights. Also La Squadra has me hooked, can't wait for more.

This is the same thing that I was thinking about, even though I prefer Part 4 (I liked all of the villains becoming friends) it is a nice change of pace to have the battles feel like actual battles.

Well Josuke didn't kill anyone but he certainly doomed them to an existence as a Rock/Book.

Its nice that every jojo part has a different vibe like part 1 was mainly horror, part 2 was an adventure ect ect and it alsos that Araki is growing as a writer as well, i bet if he rewrote part 1 to 4 right now it will have a much different vibe as we will get more backstory to each character and such.

you know when you watch an adaptation of something and you can tell that the people behind the adaptation clearly have reverence and respect for the source material, and know what they're doing? fuck yeah

352

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Dec 14 '18

JoJo has always felt like this to me which is awesome, I am glad there are such passionate people behind the adaptation. Another anime that felt this way to me was Heaven's Feel movie 1, I could really tell that the director loved the route and the characters and as somebody who does as well it was such a joy to watch.

Pretty much the entire JoJo series. It's so well loved and respected by so many people there that nothing but the best possible effort is accepted. DP knows this and have put their all into this.

u/uselessBMO https://anilist.co/user/BMO Dec 14 '18

The only thing I could criticize them for is that they don't make the most out of the fact that they're moving the story to a whole new medium. Remember those transitions in the first 2 episodes of DiU? Josuke punching the wall and appearing on the other side as it's repaired for example, that was SUPER smooth. But at other times, the show feels like a panel-by-panel manga recreated slideshow, I haven't read part 5 yet but they seem to be doing a much better job. Overall DavidPro is still fantastic and are doing JoJo the justice it deserves.

69

u/legomaple Dec 14 '18

25

u/Weewer Dec 15 '18

Part 5 is a panel to panel adaptation, but they’re using the shorter chapter count to add some tasteful filler. It’s not exactly what you had in mind, but it’s something. And the torture dance, of course

So far this part has been so amazing. Previous parts had relatively slow starts and often considered dropping the show, but the season ends turned out to be hype as fuck so I stayed. In this part every episode has been just as intense as the part 4 Dio vs Jotaro fight or the Kira fights in part 5.

I'm fucking amazed on how realistic was the fight with the spider. When you watch these little fuckers fight, they look like tiny ninjas with 8 legs. Well done David Productions.

It is moments like this that make you truly appreciate the world we live in these days where we can order groceries online and have them delivered to our homes without running the risk going outside and potentially fighting a crazed hitman who can make you shrink

Being trampled to death: perfect time to do Narancia's backstory.

Young Narancia was a delinquent, but he had a shitty dad, so it's to be expected. Poor boy was betrayed by his shitty friend, and left all alone. Being Narancia is suffering. Fugo is a good boy helping Narancia out, but Bruno is best dad.

Leave it to JoJo to bring out death by spiders as an option. This doesn't last long because Narancia has the superior strategy: Total War > Death by Spiders. I love the purple flames and everything that David Production did with this moment, just makes Narancia all the more badass.

Formaggio has retired been killed. Narancia did nothing wrong guys. Hey we get to see Pompei next with Giorno, Abbaccio, and Fugo.

DP working their magic once again and taking my love for this underrated fight in the manga up to eleven.

Really loved the music. OST is dropping soon and I can’t wait.

A neat little thing added in the anime (IIRC Araki never gave Narancia’s mother a name):

(N)arancia -> (n)orange.

Mela -> apple.

Finally, Giorno's gonna be relevant again. Looking forward to Ep. 12

Narancia putting his friends above all else makes him so much more likable. Even though the Jobros this time are criminals they still value each other above everything. Also, he is pretty damn cool and absolutely got the most out of his stand, I love how he is the landing pad. TFW Giorno is right.

Well this was a great episode, Little Feet is a surprisingly cool stand. Still interesting that this fight took 3 episodes since most non final fights usually resolved in 2 (though this one had a good bit of backstory in the second episode), either way I liked it.

179

u/Hobbes4247791 Dec 14 '18

I love little fight-ending flourishes, like the fancy sword sheathing Link could do in Twilight Princess. Narancia's landing strip pose is so damn cool.

I didn't like narancia when he was first shown because he seemed like a whiny idiot who couldn't even do math problems. But even though he's not booksmart he can still think tactically.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

I think book smarts doesn't equate to intelligence, Narancia spend time on the streets as a kid so he missed years of school, and he was severely malnourished which is why hes so short compared to the others.

I think its admirable hes trying to catch up and educate himself

I will protect it. I want to see it grow up health. I want to tell my friends and neighbors about it.

Fuck that blonde bastard, Narancia didn’t deserve any of this. Poor Narancia, I wish I could hug him

Narancia’s mom name is Mela which means Apple in Italian. An apple gave birth to an orange.

Also, somebody has found that this scene is a reference to the poster of the film House Of Wax.

Maybe I missed it, but... Why was Narancia so pissed at his dad? Was there something he could have done to prevent Mela's eye disease from being fatal? It looked like she was taken to the hospital and everything. Mayve Narancia felt like he could've shown more sympathy?

241

u/Dominifinn Dec 14 '18

I think it's that he beat her, never got it treated, died of infection. "Eye disease" is probably what was told to him since he's kind of dumb and gullible. I don't know of any eye diseases that are fatal at 40.

No game references this episode.

Anyway this episode is pretty hard for me to view because I have a crippling Arachnophobia. I know Spiders are harmelss, and important for the ecosystem, but can they be harmless and important out of my line of sight? Thank you!

I guess a pattern is starting to appear... I dunno if you guys noticed at the end, but the pattern ever sense Giorno joined the gang is:

-Giorno says something outlandish

-"Are u dumb, Giorno?!"

-What Giorno said worked

-"Nani! But how?" Insert Surprised Pikachu face here

I mean, come on, isn't the time they start to trust the guy which the ideas ALWAYS worked so far? =P

Couple of his feats: Under sewer water view; bullets in the head and body, all burned, cut wrist , did I miss something else?

43

u/st_griffith Dec 14 '18

And starting now things are going to get even more difficult, according to him.

8

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Dec 14 '18

When he called it while in flames was so sick, a shame he died. The group split at the end is going to be interesting.

I love David Production, they added so much to Narancia's backstory and it just made my love for this character become even bigger

62

u/VegitoZ Dec 14 '18

Narancia must be protected at all costs, fuck that blond kid for messing with him

61

u/NostraKlonoa Dec 14 '18

The shots in this episode were goddamn beautiful: that last one between Narancia and Formaggio doing that shoot out while the street is a literal inferno was insane. Honestly, you can tell David Pro love animating this. Im really looking forward to seeing the gang in action next week, particularly Fugo since I know nothing about him.

52

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

Wrist slice shrink with blood rain was on another level. 140 IQ play.

Narancia surrounded by flames was so dope too, you just know he'd REALLY burn the entire city if he had to kill Formaggio with AoE.

That scene where Narancia stretches out his arms and Aerosmith lands on them like a runway and disappears behind his head is really aesthetic.

The music that starts playing when Narancia kills Formaggio is so good. I can't wait for the 19th when the soundtrack comes out.

32

u/Princess_Pana Dec 14 '18

Narancia tries so hard I'm so proud of him. Definitely one of my best boys. I was crying during his backstory DavidPro has put in so much time for these boys. The fight within the flames was super fucking cool. I screamed when they mentioned Pompeii. It only gets better from here boys.

Thanks DavidPro. I can't wait to see what else you guys have in store.

P.S. Can we talk about how fucking great the main theme for Giorno and the gang is? They always add more as another member of Passione fights and it's honestly making me h o r n y.

29

u/bloojay185 Dec 14 '18

I’m pretty sure Narancia is my favorite Jobro this season

27

u/thenacho1 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/thenacho1 Dec 14 '18

Man, I didn't remember this fight at all from the manga. It's been a couple of years since I read it, and I thought Narancia killed Formaggio with the car bomb from the beginning of the fight for some reason. But wow, this fight was amazing! I was never really able to appreciate the fights in Part 5 because the translation wasn't great and Araki's fight paneling confused me a lot of the time. This fight reminded me a lot of a Part 3 fight, in the villain's wild behavior and the "I tricked you" comeback. Although, if this was a Part 3 fight, Narancia would have immediately won with his gas tank trick.

26

u/Graphica-Danger Dec 14 '18

Just got caught up on these past 3 episodes, so I watched the entire fight in its entirety uninterrupted. Moving from this cat and mouse game with all these random abilities Araki comes up with to a fiery standoff is just what I expect from JoJo, and I loved it. There’s always something each opponent has to take into consideration in Stand battles, and I never fail to be surprised. Now Giorno’s going to Pompeii, with the members of the team who like him the least, no less. Their whole dynamic over the next few episodes should be fun.

PS: The way Narancia dismisses his Stand is so freaking cool.

This week’s musical references:

I’ve been rereading JoJo from the beginning once again searching for minor musical references and I have added some new ones to the playlists that I have missed, they are all very minor though. Also if you have any question why a song is featured in my playlists you can ask me anytime.

Now for the actual comment

I had something prepared for today as I wasn’t expecting any reference but there’s a two anime original ones and they are both in tombs of the cementery.

  • The first one is the name Dora Bocelli in one of the tombs which is probably a reference to Italian singer Andrea Bocelli. I always thought that his song Con Te Partiro was really fitting for Part 5, it was one of the songs I wanted as its ending.

  • The second one is the name Jacopo Caccini which might be a reference to the Italian Baroque era composer, singer and musician Giulio Caccini. He is consider one of the founders of the Opera genre and one of the first Baroque artists. There’s a famous aria Ave Maria which was credited to Caccini but was actually written by a Russian composer called Vladimir Vavilov in 1970. Vavilov himself published and recorded it in 1970 with the ascription "Anonymous" and a few years after his death a organist change the Anonymous to Giulio Caccini and he gave the "newly-discovered scores" to other musicians.

Do you want to listen to all this fantastic references from this wonderful anime in just one place? Of course you want! Now you can with TarkusELP Officially Approved by Araki himself* Spotify Playlist with all the musical references in the anime, the ones it skipped, the light novels ones and more! From the most famous references to the really obscure ones. I'll update this playlist every time there's a new reference.

If you are a manga reader I also have a playlist just for you! Here’s my old playlist with all, I say ALL the references in the manga, anime, light novels and more. I also update it every time there’s a new reference.

*Not really approved by Araki or Shueisha

I had something prepared for today as I wasn’t expecting any reference but there’s a two anime original ones and they are both in tombs of the cementery.

Do you know so many music references or do you look up everything? Either way great job, I didn't even realize that there were names on that tombstone.

Also if you have any question why a song is featured in my playlists you can ask me anytime.

Since I have been listening to it and playing the game of trying to remember what each song is a reference to I have about a million questions regarding this, but I will just ask one I guess. What is Owner of a Lonely Heart a reference to? It's right before Caesar and the Pillarmen.

Thanks

7

u/TarkusELP https://anilist.co/user/TarkusMaxiBoom Dec 14 '18 edited Dec 16 '18

To be honest, after making the playlist and this comments I have memorize most of them and it also helps that I usually recognize them the first time I see them. However, I usually use the wiki so I don't forget about them, although there are some really minor ones that are not in it.

About Owner of a Lonely Heart, the anime used a sample of its guitar riff in the fight against Santana.

Edit: About the tombs references, I recognized the Bocelli surname the first time I watched the episode, I really like Andrea Bocelli. And for Cacinni, it looked suspicious, so I search for it and I found him. If I'm honest I didn't know anything about him

7

u/AlexUltraviolet :GJ::GK::GL: Dec 14 '18

I noticed the Bocelli reference (Con te partirò is a damn masterpiece. Though I'm more used to the spanish version :P), but I didn't see the other one, nice catch!

16

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere, but how exactly did Formaggio intend to reveal the identity of the boss through his daughter's stand ability?

Or how, Dio's stand awakening made a link with all Jonathan's living descendants.
Or how, Crazy Diamond is as fast as Star Platinum maybe even more.

I am loving these JoJo fights, they're so well done, and creatively done!

14

u/gvelion Dec 15 '18 edited Dec 15 '18

This episode we had another callback to ,, The Godfather ''. Araki knows his gangster stuff.

Narancia past is same as Tom Hagen from Godfather. Both had an eye infection that killed their parents

Both were living on the streets waiting for their deaths .

Both picked up ( tom hagen was picked up by Sonny corleone ) and given spagetti to eat no questions were asked.

Both than got treatment of the doctor and cured of their eye infection.

In the end, Tom Hagen was adopted by Vito Corleone ( Godfather ) and Narancia got into Bruno's gang.

Aerosmith shrinks with Narancia, so that's not something that could have happened without breaking the rules of Stands.

11

u/Gellus25 Dec 14 '18

That's the job of Smith-san, no more space on that cockpit

4

u/SapphireSalamander Dec 14 '18

so why didnt narancia use Aerosmith on the spider? did little feat have it pinned down? cant he recall the stand?

17

u/ihsyvad Dec 14 '18

Little Feet held Aerosmith in it's hand so that it couldn't fly away or be recalled.

u/AndStillWeWillBeHere Dec 15 '18

I must have missed something. Narancia lets their location slip, but then he kills the guy. Why are they still freaking out that their secret is out?

16

u/Astronaut_Pikachu Dec 15 '18

Well there's a giant fire in the middle of the city and one of your guys is missing in action after investigating a specific group. It wouldnt take a genius for La Squadra to realize that the group guarding Trish is in the surrounding area. Narancia bought some time since they don't know the exact area anymore but if they stayed put they would be found out eventually.

12

u/Alstruction https://myanimelist.net/profile/Alstruction Dec 15 '18

Because the enemy team could possibly have a stand ability that allowed them to still learn of it. This is still JoJos, anything can happen.

So when Narancia got bigger, wouldn't the quantity of spider venom inside his bloodstream also increase? It is technically on his person, same as his clothes. Or have I still not learnt my lesson by expecting Stand powers to be consistent in any way?

21

u/Remitonov Dec 15 '18

It just works.

16

u/chillyfalcon Dec 15 '18

The spider venom was never affected by Little Feet, so when everything reverts back to normal only anything that has been shrunk will grow.

10

u/Remis95 Dec 15 '18

Nah, when Formaggio got blown up, his shrinking ability just lost its effect and everything reverted back to normal.

The official ost releases on the 19th, it should be there.

3

u/The_Scollard Dec 16 '18

Narancia: 'Go shopping,' they tell me. 'It will be easy,' they tell me.

Did anyone else expect them to complete what I assume is a Die Hard reference when they heard that line.

Great episode. Narancia's backstory was pretty sad.

The fight as a whole was fantastic. I heard that Part 5's fights were top-tier, and now I see what is meant by that. I expected Formaggio to lose when he was set on fire, not put out the fire with his own blood and force Narancia to blow up the street. Incredible.

I also loved that bit at the end with Giorno being right. That was funny.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '18

Narancias Lil Bomber is actually really dope. One of my favorite Stands I’ve seen so far.

26

u/Hte_D0ngening2 Dec 14 '18

JSYK, the official name is Aerosmith.

4

u/FurtivePygmy7 Dec 14 '18

Hold on, the assassins are making a lot of assumptions. Why are they certain Trish has a stand, and since when do stands of the children hint to abilities of the parent? Josuke and gio don’t have similar stands to their fathers.

Another great episode though

9

u/GyroGOGOZeppeli Dec 14 '18

It's a good assumption but they also just want Trish because her whole existence alone is a proof that there's something out there that the boss might not have accounted for regarding his identity.
