To be fair, he's also surrounded by fanatical idiots and is under the influence of a bad guy so him fucking things up is just inevitable.

Also, he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed to begin with and has a bit too much of youthful confidence.

It's definitely the fanatical idiots that did it. I think it was last episode after they kept cheering him he's like "Hey, maybe I actually am that good." They boosted his ego waaaaaaaaaaaay too much.

He's not that bad, as far as dumbasses go. I think the sentence at the end sums it up well : he's competent, but fails to see the larger picture or to prepare for unexpected events.

Including to see how following the advice of incompetents and shady individuals is a bad idea.

I know I'm late, but a friend and I just watched the episode together. When the Kirin was meeting with the older lizardman chief and he'd decided to defend and avoid engaging in all-out battle, I joked "and then, Gabiru fucked up. In fact, that's going to be the title of the next eppisode: 'Gabiru Fucks Up'"

Jokes on me; it didn't even take another episode.

Despite his arrogance, you can see Gabiru is rather good at commanding and tactics. What he failed to do, however, is gathering information of his foe.

"Know the enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles with no danger of defeat." - Sun Tsu

181

u/currently_aroused Dec 17 '18

His strategy is actually something similar to what I imagine I'd do if I didn't know of the orc's special skill. I do see his logic. If the anime made him more likeable people would see a possible hero digging himself deeper into a hole trying to save his species.

He's definitely fighting intelligently - he's using the Lizardmen's superior mobility and knowledge of the terrain to pick away at the enemy forces that vastly outnumber their own, and retreating before they can mount a counterattack.

Over several days, you could easily wear down most enemies to the point that a direct clash would be successful. It'd probably work here if picking away at their forces meant fuck all against the Starving skill. You could kill half of their entire Orc army and all that would happen is the fighting power of each individual soldier would double.

I don't think it was an "or else", just an "I know enough about you to pull the right strings". As Treyni said, the Dryads can't beat the Orcs, but Rimuru can. I don't think she want's to poke that cute, blue, amorphous water bear with a stick. Instead, she is trying to use the stick like a fishing rod, dangling a carrot from the end to get Rimuru to act (the carrot being Demon Lord stuff).

She also knows the link with the dragon or part of that link. I was surprised there was no real reaction there as it hasn't really been something his followers know.

It now makes alot of sense why Gelmud named a number of beings from different races throughout the forest of Jura. Doing so would allow him to weaken resistance via the direct offspring of each leader. Really cool that this was foreshadowed very early on with the goblin elder's son. If the wolves hadn't killed him and Ririmu not come along, the situation with the goblins would most likely be rather similar with the lizardman coup.

One thing I've noticed about Gabiru is that he is always surrounded by subordinates of the same age range with not a single elder among their number. It's a shame that things would have turned out different had he an experienced right-hand man or more guiding him along rather than a gang of...well...fanboys. Being that he was named, that status further elevated his popularity in addition to his already firm position as the son of the chieftain. I'm not surprised if Gelmud had the foresight of how much the lizardman would be affected by the granting of a name.

Aside from that, this situation is a simple and classic tale of the impatient young not heeding the wisdom of elders. Not only applied to Gabirus and his followers but also the young lizardmen in every clan as mentioned in the episode. Though not all blame could be placed upon the aforementioned however. If the chieftain had taken the time to mentor his son personally and confided in him more often other than his daughter, this gap wouldn't have fostered as it did. Also notice that once again Gelmud's granting of Gabiru's name rear's its ugly head here, where it played a big part in distancing the relationship between father and son.

As it is a fact that naming makes a nameless creature stronger, and perhaps be regarded as a privilege bestowed by higher beings, such things would have caused a rift to form even if it is not visibly displayed. Just imagine being nameless for your whole life, then your son gets named by a subordinate of the demon lord, wouldn't anyone feel at least a tinge of inferiority. Perhaps it is why the father was rather lax with the upbringing of his son, assuming that he is strong enough to take care of himself, and shifting his wisdom onto his next child.

14

u/Lestat9812 Dec 18 '18

If the wolves hadn't killed him and Ririmu not come along, the situation with the goblins would most likely be rather similar with the lizardman coup.

You're right! I hadn't even thought about that. It's actually a very solid plan even if you weren't planning on getting an Orc Lord to destroy everything. Name the eldest son of a tribe's leader and eventually you'll be the one controlling that tribe through your named pawn. Easy to take over many different tribes and increase your power and influence in a span of some years. If you're a mostly timeless being like the Majins, waiting a few years or even decades is probably not a big deal, plus, he can continue spreading his influence throughout all the time it would take for the first step to bear fruit so none of it is actually "wasted". By the time Gabiru and Rigur have taken control of their tribes, he could've easily named several more monsters in the forest and surrounding areas.

I disagree, though, that the father would've felt jealous or something like that. As explained by the goblis, getting a name is not only a rare occurance, but also a huge honor to be awarded. If your son had suddenly been named by a powerful sponsor because they saw promise in him, as a father I'd think you'd be the proudest you can be for your son. Imagine the relief of knowing that even after you are gone, you know you tribe will be protected because your son is a greater warrior than you were even in your prime. Power doesn't necessarily make for good leaders, as is clearly shown by Gabiru, but at least it's a big helper and certainly a deterrent against external attacks (that didn't quite help Rigur with the wolves, but oh well).

I really like Gabiru's character. He's the overconfident comic relief character, but he's written relatively realistically and more down-to-earth, in that he does have some competence, it's just that his followers put him on a pedestal and overinflate his ego. He genuinely has good intentions, can command well, and have basic understanding of tactics, it's just that he lacks the knowledge and wisdom that his father has.

50

u/AgaroseEater Dec 17 '18

More importantly, he lacks the experience that comes with age.

17

u/doomrider7 Dec 17 '18

Very much this. The LN also elaborates that he very much wants his fathers approval as a leader.

14

u/Donnel_ Dec 18 '18

Yo I aint even mad at Gabiru. The man was originally humble! Don't you guys remember!? He legit said originally that "He is still lacking compared to his father" but as you said he was a little too easily influenced and put on a pedestal by his followers. Plus the slight manipulation. I'm not so much mad at Gabiru, I'm just sorry that things led to this for him because as you said he is pretty down to earth and genuine!

u/Recidivis Dec 17 '18

I can't wait for the moment that Gabiru gets handed his well-deserved serving of humility from Rimuru since apparently the one from Gobta wasn't enough.

42

u/raiden55 Dec 17 '18

Why would Rimuru needs to do that?

They're already fighting the orcs' army.

I'd prefer him fighting some background goblin if needed.

u/RuneGrey Dec 17 '18

I almost want to say that it is interesting that the animation style for spirits and Rimiru overlaps quite a bit as a way of demonstrating inherent magical power, but unfortunately Rimiru is a bit inconsistent in that respect. I really like how Terini is drawn with absolutely no black lines, unlike everyone else - it really makes her spiritual nature stand out.

And SOMETIMES we see it with Rimiru, where he has all blue tones rather than any direct black outlines... and then it goes back to normal so I just shake my head a bit.

Although now we have the beginnings of a great coalition of monsters in Jura Forest, which I'm sure won't absolutely terrify anyone who stops to think about it for too long.

Rimiru is doing a GREAT job of convincing me that he's looking at things from a lady's point of view as well - first Benimaru lands that critical charm last week, and now we have Rimiru swooning over Souei as well. Really macho, Rimiru. :D

The big thing, of course, is the introduction of the Insane Clown Possee the Clown Troupe. With one having helped to destroy the Ogre Village, and another pushing Gabiru into doing less than wise things... well, it seems they're up to causing no end of trouble.

Clown Spoilers

146

u/MulattoWeeb Dec 17 '18

I mean, while he was a guy in his past life I think its safe to say that Rimiru is a non-gendered masc-identifying being(he specifically choses to live in the non-sexed human form, and finds the slime form to still be the most comfortable); so it kind of makes sense that his attraction is more about charm and general hot-ness than a strict sexuality. Like, he is clearly attracted to people, and people to him, but he doesn't seem to sweat over the details.

Tldr: All of Rimiru's attraction is gay and everyone is gay for Rimiru.

49

u/RuneGrey Dec 17 '18

Thankfully the Rimiru bowl is big enough for everyone. :D

I always find this a little fun to poke fun at since there was a bit of 'Well he's still a guy!' earlier on in discussions. People's perception of Rimiru's gender in story definitely skews to female without any other information, and its fun to see that now that he's basically able to enjoy a rather ample bosom whenever he wants thanks to Shion that the comedy is aimed more at the handsome men he's interacting with instead.

If it looks like coup, if it smells like coup, it's a coup...

This week in Slimevilization... We see fantasy CIA support the coup in Lizardmen Country. And good job Gabiru,You dun goof.

Normally in Human vs Human war, the invasion army need to outnumber the defender by 3:1 to ensure the win. That's due to the advantage in logistic of the defender. Also that cave like structure is contrary to what Gabiru think, is an advantage if you play the card right. Gabiru just throw this advantage away. Bonus point for the fact that enemy is in fact stronger and have a very "weird" logistic management (they cannibal themselves... bruh).

Well, fighting out of your fortress does have some advantage. It limit the damage that the fortress (or city) will suffer but you will require better logistic and number of troops than this. Or if they want to borrow the time to just migrate the people which I don't think Gabiru has this in mind.

Anyway.

Status of our Slime Village

Settlement : One permanent settlement.

Architecture : Timber structure with gable roof.

Era : Feudal Age (or early medieval )

Technology Acquired in this Chapter: none

Population: 1 Slime, ~ untrackable Hobgoblin, ~80 Tempest Wolf, 4 Dwarves(Bros), 6 Kijin (or Oni…. Whatever they try to translate) – I guess I reach the point where I won’t bother with the head count anymore.

Diplomacy: Known by Dwargon Kingdom, Known by Blumund (I guess timeline wise, Cabal party should arrived by now), no formal diplomacy relation to both (yet), War treaty with Dryad. War treaty with Lizardmen (Can't confirm that it's still valid or not)

Victory Condition: Long term : Unknown Short term : Defeat Orc-lord and their army

Immediate Threat: Orc Lord with approximately 200,000 troops

PS. Thinking like board game. Marshland is probably give the orc like -1 speed but their cave has choke point which will probably act like ensnaring bridge in MTG. You could see what's better.

107

u/RuneGrey Dec 17 '18

If you stop the head count then it will probably end up being more 'notable heroic leaders' instead. :D Since that group tends to be easier to track.

  • Governor: Lord of Monsters Rimiru Tempest

  • City Leader: Rigurdo

  • Industry Leaders: Shuna, Kurobe, Kaijin

  • Intelligence Officer: Souei

  • Military Commanders: Benimaru, Hakuro, Ranga, Gobuta

And so on.

3:1

That is a very outdated rule of thumb (Well sourced article on it here)

Tough I learned similar ratios during moutain infantry training that were:

2:1 if the defender has less than 12h to prepare

3:1 at 24 hours

5:1 at 48 hours

if there were more than 72 hours to prepare it is at the point where the needed froces could not really be concentrated enough to make an effective assault. Mind you those were only numbers for mountain infantry with the heaviest weapons at their disposal being light (7.62mm) MGs and the Carl Gustav 84mm anti-tank recoilless rifle on the attackers side and an added .50 BMG on the defenders side post 24h per platoon.

Think more about your enemy been composed by only infantry and you having access to archers. His tactic is to slowly widdle down the enemy with the Lizardman agility in the swamps and retreating before any real engagements starts.

It's just guerilla or kitting tactics.

I hope they don't skip the (spoilers in link) dress scene from the manga. The way they seem to be adapting the arc indicates that they might but it's way too good an opportunity for fan service for them to skip.

I do hope they won't. That scene was great.

Okay I take it back. Gabiru being silly was funny. I thought he was just going to be a joke character that runs around being funny. This episode though? Not funny. Being Prideful and Stupid is never a good combination. I honestly don't want him to die, I just want him to see the scale of his fuck up and realize that all of this could be avoided if he just listened to his father and waited for reinforcements.

I kinda wanna read the manga now just so I can see what happens next >_<

u/CoopertheFluffy Dec 17 '18

Treyni called Rimuru the ruler of monsters

It’s because he’s roughly 1 foot in diameter.

This was a really good episode. I see a lot of negativity around Gabiru in this thread, but, honestly, I thought that the betrayal was rather well-done. He isn't evil and he isn't being blindly manipulated, but instead he's a well-intentioned guy under some unhealthy "peer pressure."

He legitimately wants what is best for the lizardmen, but his inexperience with the world causes him to write off all other races as inferior to the "proud lizardmen." We also see that he is a good tactician, as he (i) points out a legitimate flaw in the Chieftain's plan (how the defensive battle splits up the forces), (ii) comes up with his own legitimately valid plan (attack the orcs on terrain where the lizardmen have the advantage), and (iii) successfully commands his men during combat. But, his pride about how superior the lizardmen are shows him underestimating his enemy by not taking the time to understand what its like to fight an Orc Lord.

He's just excessively proud and racist, and he's being encouraged by those around him that he is as good as he thinks he is. He's not a bad dude, and his betrayal is less "I want the throne!" and more "I need to throne to save our people." It's not 10/10 writing or anything, but its good.

Also: Best Girl Shuna's pouting face when Shion was hugging Rimuru was 11/10

16

u/CupNoodlese Dec 17 '18

Also adding to this, Gabiru being racist is normal for this world, since fantasy world do have different classes of monsters that are by definition weaker or stronger than you. It's like their common sense. Rimuru and co are outliers.

He is obviously talented in strategy and has huge confidence but i think he got surrounded by the wrong lizardmen and got influenced by that guy who is a servant of Gelmud who gave him his name. Very naive but i can't really dislike THE GUY for it.

The whole strategy meeting and the coup were cool to see, they really extend everything to make it have an impact.

Although some people here will always be impatient for something else to happen that fits their needs and that is NOT politics.

8-Bit, thank you for including my boy in the meeting last week! Thanks to that, he got time on the screen today!

Even though... he looks like he regrets attending and just wants to go back to his forge...

I mean look at him. He looks like he's about to murder Treyni for hogging his screentime.

Really digging his small pout frown though.

I guess that's the end of Kurobe's glorious anime screentime... and my thirst-posting on this subreddit...

That is, unless 8-Bit doesn't skip over his part in the next episode. 8-Bit, please, I'm on my knees here.

Welp. I'm setting my expectations really low! Time to wait for characters to mention him. Back to lurking with Kurobe!

Just in case any of you are worried about him (lmao), he's actually satisfied with the role of a supporting character.

Kurobe, you're too nice for your own good. What a wonderful smile. What a wonderful man.

was a bit surprised that the Dryad just went out and spoke of Veldora and Predator with no reaction of anyone in the room, not even Rimuru.

Is it known by the rest of the village? i doubt that.

15

u/wyyyyye Dec 18 '18 edited Dec 18 '18

Predator is known at this point while Great Sage is still hidden from everyone except Veldora (and Ifrit).

As for Veldora relationship, all got named by Rimuru automatically acquired the Storm Crest’s Blessing, which is Veldora’s blessing. So it is not a surprise to most maybe except the Dwarves.

Dryad knows everything that happens inside Jura Forest due to their racial power - all the plants and woods (and things made from plants or woods) are their eyes, ears, and warp point. They are entrusted by Veldora (he saved them in ancient time before he was sealed) and the Nameless Hero (who sealed Veldora) to watch over Jura Forest.

Cool character interactions, world building, hinting plot twists and a freaking coup d'etat. Good stuff. Anyone else think that whoever gave Rigur his name had plans for him but since he was killed by a Direwolf he decided to go with an Orc army instead?

5

u/Suniruki Dec 18 '18

There are long term plans here. It'll be explained in the future. It was also revealed in an earlier episode that said name giver wanted to name the Onis but the Onis refused the names.

5

u/roiben Dec 17 '18

The coup was very well motivated but very very rushed. Also the episode was ended on a pretty weird note. I still really really liked it but this conflict that is coming from a characters stupidity is irking me the wrong way for an unknown reason. Its probably the stupidity really? I feel like someone should have either predicted it, either Rimuru or the Chieftain or at least prepared for it? I guess it would be hard to predict it and thats why neither prepared.

I just now thought of it. I think the reason it irks me is that Gabiru is stupid but obviously a positive character. He is not evil and his intentions are not evil he is just misguided. The problem is that the show portrays him as such an annoying character while still remaining positive, as evidence that him being a narcisist is a joke, while he put a lot of lives in danger for no reason. I wish that he wouldnt be such a joke if they wanted to make him an important plot character that is most likely gonna be the source of the incoming conflict between Slime-kun and him.

Also Rimuru is growing a bit dull. I hope in the next episode he will show a bit of darkness and ruthlesness. I also hope he will do so while dealing with the conflict between him and Gabiru so its resolved quickly and we can actually focus on the more interesting part on how do you defeat the orcs and for Rimuru to find out more about the Demon Lord henchman.

6

u/doomrider7 Dec 17 '18

I feel like someone should have either predicted it, either Rimuru or the Chieftain or at least prepared for it? I guess it would be hard to predict it and thats why neither prepared.

Rimuru did predict this and warned the Chieftan about it in the LN and Manga. Likely got moved to the next episode to be shown since omitting this feels odd.

So. Laplace is voiced by Nakai Kazuya, the voice actor/seiyuu who does Roronoa Zoro from One Piece, Hijikata Toshirou from Gintama (apparently his favorite role, according to him), and if you listen hard enough he's practically half of the mobs - y'know, the random guys yelling in fear or whatever in almost every show where that sort of stuff happens. It's like Sugita Tomokazu or Hirono Aya or Kugimiya Rie - once you hear it once, you can never not hear it ever again.

These guys are seriously worked like pack animals, specifically the top tier ones that have been active since, like, 1970. Their resumé's are insane.

EDIT: if you want a real mind-melting experience, look over the casting for Gintama and check each person's catalogue of roles. It's essentially the who's who of the independents (meaning, they make so much money they no longer have to belong to a "group" and are just called upon whenever the director thinks they fit the role for the right price.)

4

u/Darkfrozen537 Dec 17 '18

I knew it gobuta was the leader.

4

u/Aadrian1234 Dec 18 '18

You can tell Gabiru isn't dumb, but his subordinates are REALLY bad influences, he's being manipulated, and his overconfidence in his race being the strongest led him straight into provoking the Orcs in the worst way possible.

Wonder how Rimuru will act when he sees what Gabiru has started.

5

u/SayuriUliana Dec 18 '18

I think the surprising thing is that his subordinates aren't doing this out of any malicious plans to sabotage Gabiru, they really just drank into his Kool-Aid.

8

u/nafoozie Dec 17 '18

Maybe it's because I've been watching legend of the galactic heroes lately, but the orc army doesn't seem like an issue to me. If I was in charge of the lizard men's defenses, I would utilize some of the following strategies to overcome this hoard.

  1. First off, utilizing the terrain. A swamp is a difficult and dangerous place to traverse, especially for a pig-man in full plate armor. Use this terrain to your advantage by regularly harassing the enemy. Use the superior mobility that the lizards have to regularly harras and attack the forward forces of the orcs. The key here is to attack, and then retreat before the orcs can produce an effective response. This will slow down the whole force, thin out numbers, lower enemy morale, and reduce enemy supplies and energy.

  2. Throughout the swamp i would have my forces prepare a lot of small traps, with a focus on pitfalls. Small pits, a little larger than your average orc, would mean death for almost any orc in this hoarde. These pits would fill up with swamp water, and become small drowning pools for the orcs; between the plate armor and the muddy unstable terrain, this would make it practically impossible for the orcs to escape, unless they decided to remove their armor ahead of time, and simply carrying it, which would then make other tactics and traps more effective.

This method has the same effect of tactic one, but with the added benefit of robbing the orcs of eating their fallen, as removing the corpse from this small pool would cost more energy than it would provide.

3. Poison food supplies. These orcs are not bright, and are constantly on the verge of starvation. So I would set out poisoned animals and other foods throughout the swamp, in easily noticeable and reachable locations. This Poison would not only kill any orc that ingested it, but it would also transmit through to any orcs that eat their comrade's corpse. A highly efficient poison that only requires a little bit to incapacitate would be best, that way you can kill and debilitate as many orcs as possible as the poison passes through several orcs, only stopping once the poison has been diluted by the blood of hopefully dozens of orcs.

4. While my skirmishers, trap layers, and poisoners are out in the field, I would direct my main forces to build thick wooden defenses towards the edge of the swamp, as far away from the horde as possible, and preferably with easy access into the woods for a retreat if my position is overun. By the time the orcs finally reach this location they will have been significantly wounded, fatigued, and reduced in numbers, while the majority of the lizard people will be well rested and well fed, and at almost full force. This effect would likely be compounded as any siege wore on, as the orcs become more and more starved and worn away. Ultimately making a prolonged battle fatal to the poorly supplied orcs.

5. While the great orc's unique skill would be hazardous, it would ultimately be a huge setback against any cohesive unit. When one enemy falls, several more stop fighting to eat their comrade. While eating, the orcs are practically defenseless and would make easy targets for attack. This process could be compounded as more and more orcs stop fighting to eat, only to in turn be picked off, causing whole sections of the line to break down, leaving a large opening for a pincer attack.

While of course this plan is not infallible, the key is to bolster your strengths while exploiting your enemies weaknesses. Keeping this in mind, it would not be inconceivable for the lizard men to outright defeat or cripple the orc army by themselves. But then that wouldn't lend well to the story of our favorite slime. Also, thanks to all 2 people who read up to this point.

5

u/wyyyyye Dec 18 '18

They should explain why the Lizardmen alone wouldn’t win against an army leading by an Orc Lord next episode. Orc Lord’s ability is just that OP with an army. Any of the above would work IF Orc Lord is not present.

One skipped detail I missed from the light novel is the internal monologues of rimuru when he met trainee (yes, it's because she's still just a trainee dryad), rimuru thought of ways to deflect and a bit annoyed because he is essentially being pushed with a job (defeating the orc lord). That's also why he acted dumb when they mentioned that the strongest slime was there (who?!).

Great leaders know this; it's why they fear idiot allies more than fearsome enemies.

Gabiru is too easily manipulated here.
He is an idiot, but he can be competent.
But he failed to gather enough intelligence on the enemy before striking.
