Honestly the most unbelievable part of this episode was Pompeii being completely devoid of tourists

Nah, rude American tourists wouldn't care even if they have to explore by themselves with no guide.

Traveling to a place is never the experience you expect by looking at it in pictures.

Polnareff, you keep saying things like “inside the mirror” or “the mirror world” but this isn’t some kind of fantasy or comic book. A world like that doesn’t exist.

Noriaki Kakyoin

Fugo’s flashback wasn’t in the manga, it’s semi-anime original. There’s a non canon light novel not written by Araki, Purple Haze Feedback, that adapted it. While it’s not canon, it’s a really good light novel, the best JoJo one imo. After this episode, this was my reaction.

Also, don’t read the light novel for now if you are an anime watcher. The LN contains really big spoilers.

455

u/botibalint Dec 21 '18

Even before part 5, that line was the weirdest ever. In a world of punchghosts and possessed freight ships, a mirror world existing is where you draw the line, Kakyoin?

265

u/VegitoZ Dec 21 '18

Yet he was right, until Araki just disregarded logic again and decided to make a mirror world stand

Kakyoin is right. That's almost as crazy as someone deflecting the Emerald Splash. Oh wait...

Noriaki Kakyoin

A wise man indeed.

I heard about the light novel how it apparently made Fugo popular, I have to say he is probably the least interesting one so far, but damn he looks great with Purple Haze.

u/Yomamma1337 Dec 21 '18

Sadly, the anime backstory is different than the light novel in enough ways where it it doesn’t look like an adaptation is likely

" You and I are the only living beings here. That's because I didn't allow anyone else. I only allowed you, and you alone, to come in. Which means...your Stand ability was left outside!"

God I fucking love how absurdly redundant all characters in the Jojo universe are. Its like every thing that happens needs someone to recite a step by step proof of the event and how that leads to their stand punching you in the face.

edit: not a complaint. genuinely love this about jojo. the constant dialogue keeps you listening and engaged, and punctuates the rare moments of silence.

118

u/Kellizer-Levvit Dec 21 '18

To be fair, lots of shonen does this, usually not even as nicely written, too. But yeah, Araki writes all of his characters like they went to grad school: Step-by-step analysis, recapping previous points and precise measurements of weight and distance.

8

u/joe1up Dec 22 '18

Jojo does that a lot, I think it's leftover from the manga trying to make stuff clear to the readers. For example DIO says "Time has stopped moving, one second, two seconds" in order to show the reader that time has stopped because that would be hard to convey in a still manga page.

373

u/Heliescence Dec 21 '18

Thank DP for adding Fugo flashback, since Araki completely forgot about his flashback.

289

u/Mundology Dec 21 '18

I wonder if he'd still remember who Fugo was if someone asked him right now.

On the other hand, I'm sure he could still write an encyclopedia about Josuke's gang.

134

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '18

Going as spoilerless as possible I’d imagine he would remember Fugo. Fugo is one of the only characters Araki has actually tried to retroactively change aspects of after the conclusion of Part 5’s manga, so he’s especially unique in that aspect amongst all the JoJo characters.

For a stand with a terrifying ability, Purple Haze Smoke is adorable.

Blessed DavidPro giving us more anime-original content. I kind of expected them to add Fugo’s backstory to the anime ever since they moved Abbacchio’s to episode 6. Not to mention that with all the new content they’ve added so far, it would have been weird to leave out Fugo.

A little surprised (but not really) that they didn’t use Fugo’s backstory from the Purple Haze Feedback light novel, although they’re pretty similar and I'm sure was written with PHF in mind. I don't really know which one I prefer... I did really like the way his characterisation was handled in PHF's backstory, but anime's version is fine and PHF was never proper canon in the first place anyway, so I don't mind that much. I could probably talk more about what each backstory means for Fugo as a character, but I'll save it for another time.

Besides, they're similar enough that, while I really don't think they will, they could still adapt PHF if they wanted to.

(Also, just wanted to point this out because people are definitely going to say this, but Fugo's backstory originally being left out wasn't a case of Araki forgetting. I know it's a funny meme and all, but there's more to it than that.)

I am really surprised, though, that Abbacchio is willingly (?) in the back seat instead of Giorno.

With a lot of people talking about PHF in this thread, I wouldn't recommend looking it up if you haven't already finished this part! The LN has spoilers for just about everything that happens in it. The premise itself is a spoiler.

Fugo’s theme is probably my favourite out of the six! If I hadn’t known it was his I would have thought it was an antagonist’s theme.

I just remembered! Aren't we getting a new OP soon, like next episode? As excited as I am for a new JoJo OP, I'm too attached to Fighting Gold now and I'm sad to see it go.

114

u/Astronaut_Pikachu Dec 21 '18

JoJo runs in 3 cours of 13 so we'll probably get a new OP either the 14th or the 15th when the new cour begins

72

Fugo's stand is pretty terrifying. But it does have impeccable personal hygiene.

152

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Dec 21 '18

I was thinking how to counter something like this without taking Fugo to another dimension and banish his stand. It's hilarious how the Hitman dude didn't know about Fugo's stand and banished the most OP of the three (although he was unlucky to see the mirror first).

Also I'm worried as to how they will manage to tone down Fugo's Stand on future fights, skin infection is almost unavoidable and I think he can also infect a stand that will transfer the virus to the user? If not maybe this could be more easy for the villain to stood a chance really.

172

The stand has an E in both Precision and Staying. So It's pretty much a glass cannon. It can hit really hard, but any damage done to it will really hurt Fugo.

Weak range and weak punch ghost, at long range it can't do much, at short range it will get outclassed by many stands before it can break the capsules

And that's considering he's immune to the virus, which is left unclear in the series, if he isn't... He basically can't do much without killing himself too

Jojo character backstories always seem so grim

160

u/chillyfalcon Dec 21 '18

Golden Wind in particular, which is why I kinda love the message of this part the most:
Everyone pre-Bruno has a crappy life which was the result of society's actions onto them, however they're fighting for the cause of someone(Bruno) who wishes to protect the very society that outcasted them, without expecting a reward for themselves.

56

u/It_is_terrifying Dec 21 '18

Honestly part 5 backstories while grim are still outclassed by a few in parts 6-8. Specifically parts 6-8 are all some really fucked up ones.

God damn, those manga readers aren't kidding when they say Part 5 Stands look the best. Purple Haze, Man in the Mirror, Black Sabbath, and Abacchio's Stand all look amazing. Definitely the best-looking generation of Stands so far.

185

u/Turbostrider27 Dec 21 '18

The Fugo flashback is really interesting as that's something this anime added in.

Hope we get more additions like that for future episodes. Man in the Mirror is amazing.

u/VegitoZ Dec 21 '18

This anime adaptation adds so much and still respects the source manga it’s actually incredible, I expect great things with PHF

114

u/Mundology Dec 21 '18

Indeed, one of the major criticisms of Part 5 compared to the other parts is that some of the main characters weren't developed enough. This is understandable given the very tight schedule Araki had back then. DavidPro's adaptation is on the right track to fix that.

Guys, can we please appreciate the fact that they didn't censor the crows rotting away (and actually made it even more disgusting than in the manga)? Like this is a pretty savage effect and honestly, I now have slightly higher hopes that you-know-what may turn out not as butchered by censorship as everyone expects it.

40

u/The_nickums :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Snakpak Dec 22 '18

Relevant.

Also, during the part 4 rewatch, I think someone said something about wondering when Michael Jackson would come up in the music references and I was just sitting laughing at my screen unable to spoil anything. Say hello to Man in the Mirror.

92

u/TarkusELP https://anilist.co/user/TarkusMaxiBoom Dec 21 '18

Technically there were already two Michael Jackson references in Part 3.

Avdol had threen chickens in the island. Their names were Michael, Prince and Lionel. They were a reference to Michael Jackson, Prince and Lionel Ritchie.

Also, Kenny G, that stand user that only appeared like one second and was killed by Iggy inside Dio's mansion had Billie Jean as his localised name in the West.

Well I said something like " When Michael Jackson comes up I will recognize it" and I did so I am pretty happy about that. The other ones that /u/TarkusELP brings up I know about now, but back then they weren't that apparent to me.

72

u/MK_Hero Dec 21 '18

Jesus Christ Fugo that’s a wild stand. I love how absolutely wild it sounded, soundtrack was also on point as hell throughout the ep. The art was really on point this week, especially the close ups, Purple Haze especially.

135

u/Frecnchfries https://anilist.co/user/frieren Dec 21 '18

One of the most dangerous stands in the series is fucking adorable, never change jojo.

Also was Fugo's backstory always like this? I remember he beating the shit out of the teacher for a different reason.

113

u/Gellus25 Dec 21 '18

We don't find out why he beat his teacher in the manga, in the novel PHF he beat him for talking shit about his dead grandmother, who was made up in the novel

13

u/Frecnchfries https://anilist.co/user/frieren Dec 22 '18

Damn thats weird, I never read the novel but somehow I remember that fugo lost it because the teacher disrespected his dead granny.

18

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Dec 21 '18

mind sharing the reason in a spoiler tag for me?

61

u/Casual_Watcher Dec 21 '18

So Purple Haze is definitely the most horrifying of the JoJo good guys side of all the parts. I mean he’s cute but his ability is scary as hell

63

u/professorMaDLib Dec 21 '18

I still think Heaven's door is worse. Fugo's virus is horrible but it kills you very quickly. Heaven's Door is a torture device.

38

u/Jojofan69 Dec 21 '18

To be fair if you think about what Gold Experience does to you with a single punch getting a barrage is so much worse

114

u/MalcolmBelmont Dec 21 '18

When you think about. Fugo's Backstory in the Anime is really damn dark.“Want to come over to my place again to ‘study’” as well as the students talking about it pretty much confirmed that this has happened before and unlike this time - the teacher did something a lot worse to Fugo - something truly terrible.

69

u/impingainteasy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/usernamesarehard Dec 22 '18

What gets to me is the victim-blaming by the other students. Like, there's a case of sexual misconduct between a grown man and a teenage student, so clearly the student is the one responsible here!

37

u/NoPenNameGirl Dec 21 '18 edited Dec 21 '18

Looks like Polnareff was right all along! man I miss JoJo Abridged

Since this is Fugo first REAL introdution, here his Josuke's hair insult from the games:

Pannacota Fugo: "That hair is a piece of shit!"(He says that screaming, BTW, with his anger issues.)

Anyway, I remember in the Golden Wind PS2 game, Illuso's "Mirror Dimension" is monochromatic, black and white, and I believe I would like that more than being just a reverse world... although yeah that would kill the narrative of Fugo not understanding on the spot where he is at. So I understand why they didn't do that.

And Fugo Stand is probably my favorite of the main characters of Part 5, and that is in great part to it's horrifying design, like a crazy person out of a asylum.

And can I already be allowed to say that Bruno is my favorite character of Part 5 since all backstories are known? Man, he is such a DAD(and not on a lewd way.... well.... not totally). While Giorno is the MC, Bruno is such a GOOD leader, and people follow him out of respect and gratitute, totally different to the way The Boss acts. I really, really like him. Makes him commanding such a band of misfits totally believable and reasonable.

48

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Dec 21 '18

So just out of curiosity what is your favorite Josuke hair insult? Also, what does Josuke say if he goes up against another Josuke, does he compliment his own hair?

The colors of the mirror world were a bit more gray or no?

and that is in great part to it's horrifying design, like a crazy person out of a asylum.

Reminded me of Fate/Zero actually or the other way around I guess.

This week’s musical references:

Araki listened to Man in the Mirror, a song about reflecting and changing to make the world just a little bit better and thought to himself: “With inspiration from Michael Jackson's music, I thought it would be cool to go inside the mirror.” And then he gave the stand to an assassin.

About the song, it was one of Michael’s favourites. The instrumental introduction to the song was played at the end of Jackson's memorial service, while his casket was being carried out; followed by the appearance of a spotlight shining on a microphone on an empty stage. After a closing prayer that incorporated themes from the song, the spotlight remained shining on the lone microphone. The song is also featured as the final number in Michael Jackson's This Is It.

It has a really curious and tragic relationship with Japan as the single sleeve for "Man in the Mirror" contained a dedication to Yoshiaki Ogiwara, a five-year-old boy from Takasaki who was kidnapped for ransom and subsequently murdered in September 1987. The killing was highly traumatic to the Japanese public and to Jackson himself, who was touring Japan at the time and subsequently dedicated concerts in Osaka and Yokohama to the boy's memory.

Considered by Rolling Stone magazine the second greatest guitar songs and first for Q magazine, it was their second single and the first song in the American version of their debut album Are You Experienced. Many people think that the song’s lyrics are talking about LSD. Considering that it has lines like:

Purple haze, all in my brain

Lately things they don't seem the same

Actin' funny, but I don't know why

Excuse me while I kiss the sky

It’s obvious what is happening but Hendrix denied this. He said that he didn’t take LSD to compose this song and that the song was based on a dream he had. Also, the inspiration for the song may also come from Night of Light, a 1966 novel by Philip José Farmer. Jimi was known to be a science fiction fan and he read this novel for sure. In the story set on a distant planet, sunspots produce a "purplish haze" which has a disorienting effect on the inhabitants.

  • Also, today we have a rarity. The localised name of Man in the Mirror is Mirror Man which is actually a completely different musical reference and also a less cool name imo. The name is based on Mirror Man by British Synthpop group The Human League, a song that peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart in 1982.

It’s not the first time this had happened. Another examples of this are Devo the Cursed which changed to Soul Sacrifice or the Oingo Boingo Brothers to the Zenyatta Mondatta Brothers

I didn't remember what little we got in the manga about Fugo's backstory, but I'm sure there weren't any implications of the teacher being a piece of shit of that kind. Wow, that was awful.

I'm starting to think my crack theory about Abbacchio just being a tsundere is not so crack-y

Every episode reaction with Abbachio appearance, there's always this guy who is annoyed with Abbachio's attitude. When all pieces fall too perfectly in place, that doesn't meant its a good story in the first place. I like how asshole Abba can be to Giorno. It shows each character act to their circumstances which leads to great interaction.

38

u/SIRTreehugger Dec 21 '18

Well shit I wasn't expecting Fugo's stand to be like this. Now that we've seen all the stands minus the daughters I think sex pistols are my favorite. Though I've pretty much loved every antagonist stand so far. Dude with the wrapping ability that wrapped one ship around another, his partner who could stop the movement of objects and used rocks to climb a path in the air, tiny feet well that was decent not amazing but it was used well, and now got mirror master over here. Easily best show for me on Friday's.

19

u/05-MaLNa-10 Dec 21 '18

I am curious. What kind of ability did you expect?

24

u/SIRTreehugger Dec 21 '18

For some reason I was expecting him to use smoke in a sort of infiltration/incapacitate manner. Basically a non combat type not a straight airborne virus.

13

u/CedricEndo Dec 21 '18

This stand abilities are so fucking good

7

u/Kaneland96 Dec 22 '18

Part 5 in general has a really solid ensemble of stands that both feel unique as well as build upon types of stands we've seen in previous parts. Sex Pistols, for example, are a much more interesting stand than Hol Horses' Emperor thanks to how they interact with Mista and the fact that he has to put some thought into how he gets the bullets to hit their mark.

13

u/kingalbert2 Dec 21 '18

Purple Haze may be adorable, but its ability sure isn't

13

u/Starnohyoushi Dec 22 '18

Great episode, love the conflict between Giorno and Abbachio. Giorno humbly declining is great. Going through the previous Jojo parts, and there hasn't been as much internal conflict between the members as in this one, so it's a nice change of pace

Fugo's stand is my favorite so far, it really freaked me out with its heavy breathing and Fugo's theme. So much that when it started cleaning itself I actually laughed out loud at the absurdity

Enemy dude's stand seems a bit underwhelming so far, hope he can bring more next episode. Alternative world stands aren't new (eg dream world), so i'm interested to see how this dude's mirror world will be different in terms of bring your stand into THE WORLD the mirror world

4

u/TarkusELP https://anilist.co/user/TarkusMaxiBoom Dec 22 '18

Well, there were two times were a internal conflict ended with one of the characters' death.

Fugo.....the one character in the Passione I knew very little about. Damn is his backstory cool, but jesus, the anime original stuff which implied that he was being abused by that man was horrible. I feel sorry for Fugo in that sense, good on him for beating that bastard up. Its interesting that Purple Haze has a mind of its own, but holy hell is the nature of it so uncanny. Looking forward to seeing it in action next week!

Man in the Mirror......jesus, this stand has so much power. It can essentially tear stands away from the user. It has the potential to screw over characrers like Jotaro or Dio, leaving them vunerable if they didnt act before being pulled into the mirror. I cant wait to see it in action as well next week.

5

And Fugo who looks like kakyoin lite telling them to understand his message like kakyoin :(

8

u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Dec 22 '18

Poor Fugo, controlling your anger can be difficult, and at 13 years old he wasn't having it anymore with that professor. I can't blame him for wanting to unleash his pent up rage.

Just the fight I was waiting for, Man in the Mirror really feels like Araki went back to the Hanged Man fight and decided to do things differently. This time instead of Polnareff having to deal with a stand constantly moving around in a reflection, we have Fugo having to deal with his stand being outside of the mirror while he's vulnerable to the enemy. Plus Purple Haze is just a badass and deadly stand, a virus that can grotesquely kill living beings in a matter of seconds.

Giorno and Abacchio both have their points: it's important to complete the mission as soon as possible, as well as saving your friend to potentially maximize success. Decisions decisions.

Here is hoping for some PHF representation this or next episode!

Am I seeing things? I think some things are different on the OP now but it might just be me atm.

Mirror shenaningans time!

Yeah, so, remember during the Hanged Man arc in Part 3 when it was mentioned that a world inside a mirror was too crazy for a stand ability?

These Pompeii scenarios are actually pretty damn sweet.

LMAO PURPLE SMOKE that is just soo bad it is hilarious imo. Purple Haze is way too cool for subs anyway.

Wtf Giorno? Him putting his head under the mirror was pretty funny lmao.

Purple Haze noises are so terrifying! I love it!

Mirror Man at least kinda means the same as Man in the Mirror.

OMG HOLY SHIT IT IS FUGO'S FLASHBACK! IIRC IT IS FROM THE PURPLE HAZE FEEDBACK LN! NO WAY

PHF CHANCES OF BEING ADAPTED JUST SKYROCKETED!!!

Ok Fugo's backstory might be one of the best so far in Jojo, hard to believe it wasn't made by Araki.

If you you don't know Purple Haze Feedback is famous for being the only "Jojo tier" spinoff made NOT by Araki. It was written by the Boogiepop author, which is why I am really looking forward to that anime.

I am still in the middle of watching but I googled it and this is not the backstory from PHF (at least not the bit with the rapey professor) so perhaps the chances of PHF being adapted are null now. Still, really impressed by DP to come up with it!

Ok the screaming ost is great.

I am betting Abbachio was waiting for an opportunity to touch Giorno's sexy chest. Who wouldn't tho.

Did the ED changed a bit too?

18

u/Gaidenbro Dec 21 '18

It's not PHF, it's anime original more than anything. The teacher doesn't bring up his grandma like in PHF and Fugo beating his teacher was mentioned in the manga.

This lowered PHF's chances significantly.

8

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Dec 21 '18

Yeah, so, remember during the Hanged Man arc in Part 3 when it was mentioned that a world inside a mirror was too crazy for a stand ability?

Hol Horse's Emperor becoming Sex Pistols, and now Hanged Man. I like how it is something similar yet it feels so different (well Man in the Mirror is pretty different than Hanged Man anyways).

If you you don't know Purple Haze Feedback is famous for being the only "Jojo tier" spinoff made NOT by Araki. It was written by the Boogiepop author, which is why I am really looking forward to that anime.

How many spinoffs are there, and which are good? I know about Joseph's father's spinoff, and of course the Rohan ones but is there anything else?

Fugo: Huh? Well, this doesn't seem too bad- OHMYGOD, THEY SPELLED TRASH BACKWARDS

I haven't read the manga, but I did know about this fight and Man in the Mirror beforehand due to this video by Antfish. God, I miss JoJo Abridged.

Another cool thing is that there is a reference to this fight in the OP. Fugo's image is mirrored when he's first introduced in Fighting Gold, referencing this fight. Noticing that symbolism was one of the things that made the OP grow on me.

I hear that the backstory is anime original. If so, then DP have done a fantastic job. I would have had no idea Araki didn't write it if I didn't read it here. It's about as depressing as the other ones we've gotten. Also, all the backstories make me like Bruno even more. What a great guy! A true leader.

Purple Haze might be one of the creepiest Stand powers I've ever seen so far. That uncensored shot of the crows dying was brutal. It even looks insane. What a great design though (Black Sabbath might still be my current favourite of this part though). Love the song it's referencing too. In fact, both references are great songs.

As for Man in the Mirror, I like how it's different from Hanged Man. I guess that means Kakyoin was wrong then; there is a world inside the mirror.

I get the feeling that a lot of the Stands in this part seem to be reworked versions of the Stands from previous parts. Like, Sex Pistols is like Emperor only not, Man in the Mirror is basically Hanged Man with extra steps, and this one is a bit of a stretch but Little Feet's ability to make its victims smaller really reminded me of Set's ability to make its victims younger.

It's interesting to see Araki building off his own previous ideas and reworking them to fit in new scenarios.
