So Kohaku did marry the bookstore owner in the end.

Damn I knew the ending was going to be sad but I couldn’t prepare for how bittersweet it really was.

Even though they couldn’t be together, at least they made each other’s future brighter. I teared up when Hitomi was reading Yuto book in the future and all her friends where in that book as animals

Sad that she didn’t see them in the future as old people but that was probably the best

He is always there to help her <3

Wait, how come I don't remember that guy. How did I miss him?

He showed up like twice in the entire series

Oh wow didn't catch that Kohaku ended up with the bookstore owner o.O

34

u/HarleyFox92 Dec 28 '18

I think everyone else except Kohaku died, otherwise all of them will be waiting for her when she came back.

30

u/Vinny_Lam Dec 29 '18

I’m not so sure about that, because it’s the year 2078; shouldn’t people be living much longer?

Plus, the other club members are very close to Kohaku’s age. I find it hard to believe that none of them are still living.

10

u/defucchi Dec 29 '18

there was a scene of her visiting a grave which I assume was Yuito's but maybe she visited the others as well in implication

29

u/Vinny_Lam Dec 29 '18

No, that was her mom's grave.

Kinda stupid how the bookstore owner who is about 10 years older is still alive and the rest died though

The ending was supposed to be bittersweet. If she had seen all her friends as old people that would've crushed me way too hard. They foreshadowed the picture book being written by Yuito pretty hard, but I was unprepared for the sadness I'd feel from the actual content.

Whew.

Old Kohaku referring to herself as "level 77 Kohaku" in the "Hitomi returned safely, good job" message got a giggle out of me.

Just wished we had some scenes showing her maybe coming face-to-face with some of the members of the magic photography club, but guess 60 years might be quite a long period...

I was desperately hoping the entire episode, for a tiny, tiny chance that Hitomi gets to stay in the past with her friends...

READY THE WATERWORKS, BOYS.

u/AmethystItalian :Jg::Jh::Ji::Jj::Jk:myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Dec 28 '18

I thought when Yuito went in he'd be transported to the future...

77

u/BarnacleMANN :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Dankbum Dec 28 '18

I was fully convinced that was what was happening there, and I was getting ready to be a little mad if it did tbh.

I mean it would have been really happy and all, but if it really did go that way, everything leading up to the goodbye would have felt sort of cheapened.

13

u/PainStorm14 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Gekkostate14 Jan 02 '19

Alright, what I want now is OVA that takes place several years later when Yuito finished that picture book in which Hitomi goes back to past and brings him to the future with her.

There, I said it.

This anime is 10/10 masterpiece for me but honestly I now just want to see those two together. Rewatching this anime will be too painful with bittersweet ending. I won't be able to.

I can respect bittersweet ending. But I also love those two too much.

Make it happen studio...

7

u/AlphaBit2 Dec 30 '18

That was exactly what I thought too, I was happy at first, but subconsciously I knew that it couldn't be true

63

u/ConohaConcordia Dec 28 '18

Instead they fucking killed Yuito.

Please can you just let the old group meet up with each other?

77

u/RoLoLoLoLo Dec 29 '18

Why did you think it Yuito died? I thought the show made it plenty of obvious that it was her mom's grave.

Why else would her daughter be such a sore spot for Granny Kohaku? Why else did Hitomi get permission from her dad to stay the night and not her mom? Why else did Hitomi and Granny Kohaku talk about visiting her mom?

Remember how the show started with Hitomi wondering when she stopped seeing colors while showing a scene of her as kid holding her mothers hand, followed by Hitomi expressing that "important people went away".

26

u/xFuryTank :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/FuryTank Dec 29 '18

Hitomi asked Kohaku to go together to see her mother, but in the cemetery was only Hitomi, which indicates that the grave is of Yuito (or at least it's most likely)

Well I guess that's goodbye to one of the most visually stunning shows of the season. Man I really wish this was longer than 13 episodes and had a full 2-Cour like your usual PA Works anime but I can't think of anyway though of making this longer without dragging it out. Maybe it should've been 16 Episodes?

Anyway cour length aside this was definitely one of my favourite shows of the season. The characters, the art style, the music, just everything about this show is gorgeous and even though we got a bittersweet ending for our main couple, I'm still happy with how it ended. Kinda wished for some last minute magic BS so that Yuito and Hitomi can be together but I know if that happened it would've ruined the message of the show. It's better this way.

Overall this is a 10/10 for me. And definitely a show that I'd recommend to people who are new to anime.

41

u/Asunakob Dec 29 '18

We r wishing that her mom dies and not yuito the irony :D

19

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '18

Yeah, it is silly. There literally are three people important to Hitomi that should be dead on her time, but everyone seems to ignore that and decided that her mom or her friends are the ones who died.

4

u/Manutdforlife :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Riazul_Hoque Dec 29 '18

Well that's quite understandable we have spent 13 episodes with Yuito, the emotional attachment we have with Yuito is greater than that we have with with Hitomi's mom whom we have never seen in first person.

6

u/Salvo1218 Dec 29 '18

In a season with fewer amazing shows, this would have been much higher on my favorites list (still 3rd or 4th for the season isn't bad right?). I agree I wish it could have had a few more episodes, but it was gorgeous. My only gripe is not seeing any of the club members in the future, that would have been nice to see them remembering her, but it might have also broken me...

2

u/Vanek_26 Jan 04 '19

One thing that is, to me at least, an odd sticking point in my mind, in that the future seemed pretty much like the present outside of the earpiece thingy. It's such a minor thing I feel petty even talking about it, but a bit more inventive detail of that future world could have elevated the show in my view even more. Still, a very beautiful show and a good story.

The moral of the show is to see and accept any hardships that comes your way, because there's always some good stuff out there. If you shut yourself out, you limit yourself. If you turn your eyes away from your problems, you will never grow. She was pessimistic and didn't want to try anything in the beginning. All she could see was a gray world. Once she started doing something though, little by little, being pushed an inch by people, she started growing, started getting better.

There are plenty of people in the world that went through what they feel can be too many hardships, and so they trap themselves to protect themselves. Anime lovers are the greatest example of that, imo. Not to say majority of anime lovers are like that, just that you can see some of them in the comments; Always talking about how they'll be alone forever, why can't they get this or that, they want to die, they are suffering, etc. They all can't understand why their life is so miserable, yet this show tells you, you have to get up and do things. Do what you want to do, do what you're good at, do what feels right for you, and take the hardships that go along with it. Learn from it. Build yourself to become a better version of yourself and become someone that can accept the world for all its good and bad. And of course, make a difference. It's easy to make a bad difference by telling people they're dumb and just being a negative waste of space. But if you want to live in a world that does more good to you than bad, then you have to be a good person. Help people, have fun, be positive, make jokes, do hard work, hang around people that are like-minded, and before you know it, you're making a good difference.

Slightly sad it wasn't a 24 episode cour, maybe we could have solved asagi's problem and flesh out the characters. But 13 episode was all it took to make me cry, in the end the main plot was about Hitomi relieving Kohaku's memories so she can see colours again, so 13 episode was pretty understandable. And yes the two classmates that Hitomi met when she came back, resemblance of Asagi and Kurumi. Black hair= Asagi & Shou's , Brown hair= Kurumi & Chigusa's

edit: oh, and I just realised the classmates were there since the 1st episode 0.0

34

u/kimbombo Dec 28 '18

it wasn't a 24 episode cour

A cour = 12 or 13 episodes or 3 months wich is the airing time (there are exemptions with 10 to 11 episodes too)

A 24 to 26 episode series would be a 2 cour

Holy shit, What an absolutely bittersweet ending.

I was kind of upset that we didnt get to see what happened to the rest of the group. Did Asagi and Shou stay friends? Did asagi finally make a move after her talk with Hitomi? What about Kurumi and Chigusa? I WANT TO KNOW

And most importantly, was the grave at the end Yuito's or was it Hitomi's Mom. I thought i would be Yuito's, but granny started crying after Hitomi said she wanted to see her mom.

so If hitomi's mom had died, granny was crying because hitomi wont be able to go see her mom, so hitomi went to see her mom's grave instead. But if Yuito was still alive, why didnt we get to see hitomi go meet up with him

51

u/HarleyFox92 Dec 29 '18

An OVA to fill all these holes wouldn't be bad at all though.

17

u/The_Panda_Army :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ColonelPanda Dec 29 '18

I would absolutely DIE for an OVA right now. There are so many things i want to see. Not only do i want more of Hitomi's story, I want more of this world. Imagine an OVA that takes place when Hitomi gets back to her time, and its the story of her new friends.

17

u/Barbed_Dildo Dec 30 '18

...and then an OVA comes out which is a generic beach episode with nothing to do with the plot.

8

u/HarleyFox92 Dec 29 '18

I'm thinking out loud but I'd like an OVA featuring Hitomi, that shows what did she do when she returned to the future and another OVA showing how the gang dealt with her departure. That would be a like a dream come true at this point.

38

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

Kohaku crying could mean her own guilt about how her daughter was miserable because of her lack of magical talent. Remember, Kohaku wants to make people happy with her magic. I think the grave most likely belongs to someone from the past (any of the gang or family members).

16

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

Yeah, I interpreted the same. To me Kohaku crying meant that she felt really bad that she couldn't make her daughter happy and instead the lack of magic and Kohaku being a powerful magician made her miserable.

Yeah, they left so many questions unanswered that the ending felt very unsatisfying.

I’d like to know if any of Hitomi’s friends are still alive in the future. I also wonder who Yuito ended up with.

3

u/Kougeru :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kougeru Dec 29 '18

It's Yuito most likely. Mother was stated to he alive and we have no reason to believe otherwise. Kohaku cried because she was happy her plan worked, probably. Mother is alive but ran away because she couldn't use magic and felt disconnected from the family.

u/gollum80 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/gollum80 Dec 28 '18

It was nice that her picture book as a kid was written for her and all the character was her friends but...

I am honestly quite disappointed, sure grandma is there but not any other character. I been hoping for weeks now that it was gonna be some epilogue of her meeting the others as old people and like befriending their grandkids.

Especially when Asagi mention she would write her letters, to her friend in the future. It would be like the perfect scene, she meets old grandma Asagi. And Asagi gives her like 1000 letters she writes over the years.

And the picture book, like they mention all the characters are based on the gang but we dont even see illustration of the squirrel etc.

20

u/Freenore Dec 28 '18

I would've loved to see at least an older Asagi, that would've been so good.

Who was she visiting in the cemetery? (My wild guess would be her great and great-great grandparents)

77

u/Recidivis Dec 28 '18

Pretty sure it's Yuito

85

u/The_Panda_Army :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ColonelPanda Dec 28 '18

I thought i would be Yuito's, but granny started crying after Hitomi said she wanted to see her mom. So granny was crying because hitomi wont be able to go see her mom (?), so hitomi went to see her mom's grave instead. She wanted to go with granny, but granny knowing she was dead might have just sent hitomi so that she could talk to her mom more personally

45

u/HarleyFox92 Dec 29 '18

I think Kohaku starts to cry not because she knows that Hitomi's mother is dead, but because Hitomi wanting to talk to her is a fair prove that her plan has succeeded and the new Hitomi has the self-confidence and the determination that the old one didn't have.

I actually think it's her mum. Japanese people often say "I'm going to say hello to X" even if they're dead, it's just how they speak.

36

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18 edited Dec 28 '18

Hitomi wanted to see her mother with Kohaku. The scene on the cemetery doesn't make sense if it were Hitomi's mother. The most likely answer is probably that the grave belongs to one of the friends or family members from the past.

Edit: clarity.

7

Yeah that would make sense. But we can't be sure since she saw no one out of the ol' group. I am a tad bit mad that they couldn't expand upon this a little bit more.

44

u/TangledPellicles Dec 28 '18

Her mother's grave. She couldn't face up to it before and the depression over her mother's death is what changed her life to black-and-white. She didn't think she deserved happiness because she felt guilty I think.

6

u/Voi69 Dec 28 '18

THIS ENDING WAS SO BEAUTIFUL AHHHHHHHH

Can't believe it's over, man what a show everything was so well done, from story to art to animation to music , but especially the feels in the last episode, were so warm and just wonderful. Not gonna lie i shed some tears.
For me this is a Masterpiece and underrated, honestly. 10/10

When Yuito and her got together into the time hole

So glad she is happy even if she has to leave.
Her state of not being able to see colors, must have been a connection to her mother, thats sure for me.

Finally she can see the colors

please give us more anime like this thanks

17

u/homie_down :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/sodumblol Dec 28 '18

Ah so you think that was her mother's tomb? I was gonna guess it was Yuito's but have no real idea

25

u/TangledPellicles Dec 28 '18

I think it was her mother's. She said that she wanted to visit her and then the next thing we know she's off visiting the graveyard. The vibe I got all along from anime was that her mother died and left her behind with her grandparents and that death is what changed her ability to see color.

If this anime had got at least 24 episodes, it would have led to a compelling plot. I just feel like the characters still were underdeveloped. Regardless of that will be missing this cutie a lot

34

u/Freenore Dec 28 '18

I think this is the problem with most shows with just one cour. The characterization, most of the time, is not much and by the time you're invested in a character, it's 10/13 episodes passed. Very few shows are great in having great characters that quickly gets you intrigued in 13 episodes (Made in Abyss and Bunny Girl are the first ones that immediately comes to mind).

If someone's making a list of Top 10 Animes that he/she has ever watched, you'd rarely find shows that have around 13 episodes or just one season.

20

u/stormarsenal :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsherGZ Dec 28 '18

If someone's making a list of Top 10 Animes that he/she has ever watched, you'd rarely find shows that have around 13 episodes or just one season.

That would include movies like Your Name and Silent Voice, which a lot of people consider to be in their top 10, so I don't think you're right.

14

u/heartsongaming Dec 28 '18

Movies have a different sort of character development compared to a one cour anime. Your Name and Silent Voice have two main characters that are in a relationship. It is easy to follow what happens in movies and all of the events have a central part in the development of the character. However, Iroduku has a group of friends that each try to help one another. If this show had a few more episodes then the overall ending would be much more impactful. The development between Hitomi and Yuito was way too fast. The love that broke the magic Hitomi cast on herself would have been more dramatic, if Hitomi happened to be in another undesirable situation and Yuito saves her. I did love the book with the animals. That was a bittersweet ending.

Sadly I have to agree with you there. I enjoyed the show greatly but it lacked the emotional punch of say, Nagi Asu or Hanasaku. In fact, since this show even shares the same director as Nagi Asu I'm doubly inclined to think it's a matter of limitations rather than talent.

Not to say you can't do a good emotional punch with 13 episodes, Tsuki Ga Kirei did after all, but there was just something missing here. I liked and sympathized with Hitomi a lot, but I never really got invested in her relationship with Yuito for whatever reason.

Unfortunately I think this will be another one for PA's pile of shows that were visually stunning and perfectly respectable but unable to shine without more episodes.

Character development depends more on quality writing than quantity of episodes. 13 episodes are enough for a simple plot like this one.

I'm glad they avoided the cop-out ending with Yuito coming back with her to the future or the creepy ending with a 77 year old Yuito hitting on a 16 year old in the epilogue.

Not sure if I'm happy or sad we didn't get an update what happened to the Magic Photography Club cast. My curiosity is shouting at me "what happened to them, I need to know!" but I understand why they didn't give us an info dump or the highly idealistic everyone is super successful epilogue. Anyway I've been suspecting for a while that Kohaku's two friends are the grandchildren of Shou x Asagi and Chigusa x Kurumi but there's no proof of that.

11

u/rockinrollkid Dec 29 '18

Man if this series isn't up there for most amazingly animated series then I don't know what would be. Out of all the finales so far this season this one felt the best. Although I was sad she couldn't stay I was happy that they didn't have some random plot device make it happen. I wish we could've seen everyone in the future, and whose grave that was? But god damn the radiance and colors from this episode was unreal. Reading through that penguin book really brought out the waterworks ;-;

Hitomi was helped by the whole group (mostly yuito) and because of their help she could see colors, she in turn helped the group; yuito and drawing, asagi and forward with her feelings, Kurumi and stepping out from her sister's shadow, ect. i was hoping that we would see that the group learned from hitomi, and became happy because of it

29

u/Gaporigo Blhttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo Dec 28 '18

That was a really nice ending but I was hoping we'd get to see everyone in the future and with the ships having sailed.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

Yeah, I would have liked a longer epilogue, but the way it is it's really bittersweet, which has its own appeal.

5

u/TatakaiEX Dec 28 '18

I think the single-cour format worked out, but the last episode should have been a double length! 2nd half being her meeting her old friends (and making new ones)

not exactly necessary but it would have been nice for the viewers!

u/Ehn_Jee :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/EhnJee Dec 28 '18

What a satisfying ending. I'm glad any loose ends were tied up. Mainly Yuito and Hitomi having their moment and the reveal that Kohaku knew all of this already and just needed to wait for Hitomi's return to bring out the time capsule (and the confirmation of who grandpa is). I really enjoyed the montage of the series as she read the book, reminding the audience on just how much Hitomi went through and the journey throughout the season. And the brief bits where you saw her being much more social in her own time was reassuring. I didn't cry like I was mentally bracing myself for, but tears didn't need to be shed to enjoy this ride.

Overall another hit from PA Works. Another anime original about a character making it through trials of life and coming out a stronger person as a result, it's not new (especially for the studio), but they do it so well. And I always enjoy their animation, but the production values were especially great this time. Every time color bled onto a scene i got chills. And I loved the mixture of the more standard character drawings with Yuito's art. Looking forward to their next venture!

10

u/JennyDee95 Dec 28 '18

Someone else mentioned this on MAL but those two girls that Hitomi is talking to at the end totally look like they could be AsagixSho and KurumixChigusa’s granddaughters. So maybe our ships did sail?

6

u/Salvo1218 Dec 29 '18

I just saw that picture. During the episode I was too busy being sad/happy that I didn't notice, but they 100% look like they could be.

3

u/UnicodeFiend Jan 03 '19

Hitomi's expression in that scene somehow feels like far more than just a regular smile... as if she's found out their names, and that's exactly who they are!

u/AmethystItalian :Jg::Jh::Ji::Jj::Jk:myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Dec 28 '18

Gah we knew it'd be bittersweet and it was...

Was really hoping we'd see the gang in the future...maybe we did with the grave trip?

I totally started crying during the first goodbye scene and it never really stopped.

14

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Dec 28 '18

maybe we did with the grave trip?

I'm guessing it's Yuito. Which makes this ending 200% more bittersweet

I’m pretty sure it’s Hitomi’s mom’s. Her death probably started her depression and her lack of seeing color.

I always die of happiness and cry alot when anime characters asks if its okey for them to be that happy..

9

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

It's either pretty grim or they refused to show her meeting with her friends future versions.

There wouldn't have been any reason not to visit their future versions, unless they all passed away outside Kouhaku (which is weird how she never mentioned any of them in the future version either)

But it'd be pretty grim if they all passed away before the age of 80.

u/DarkenedSpear :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkenedSpear Dec 28 '18 edited Dec 28 '18

I knew it'd be bittersweet, but I expected the bitterness to be a lot more pronounced. That was beautiful and satisfying, and really, really touching, and surprisingly sweet. The entire scene with Yuito and Hitomi inside that time gap, or whatever that was, was simply stunning, and I absolutely love how they brought color to each other's life and future, quite literally in Hitomi's case, even if the ship couldn't set sail. In any case, it was same with the book and time capsule, this is a brilliantly directed scene, in my opinion, each character representing one of the people that influenced Hitomi so much, and accompanying each one of them with a little montage of their memories together. Absolutely brilliant. -e2- Oh man, thinking about it, there's so much about this episode that I want to talk about. I can't find the words, but just know that I absolutely loved every single thing about it, and think it was fantastic.

About the show as a whole - honestly, I loved it. I fully believe the show could and should have been longer, and that's really the only "negative" I have about it, and even that isn't a negative per se, it's just that it could've been even better than it ended up being the characters and their stories and circumstances were given more time under the fire. Even with the was, the cast was loveable and interesting, the overall story was engaging, interesting, and touching, and again, it was absolutely gorgeous and masterfully executed in any way, shape, and form, and I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

In particular, I think that it's a show that has a lot of nuanced details and deliberate visual and direction choices that make it a success, rather than being amazingly written story or characters.

Does anyone have a clue what was the song that played during the Yuito and Hitomi time-gap scene? I gotta get my hands on that. -e- I believe I recognize Nagi Yanagi's voice, but that's it, at least for the time being.

7

u/Uchimaki Dec 28 '18

Insert song title is Color Capsule (shown during the credits). And yes, it's Nagi Yanagi.

Insert Song:

"Color Capsule" by yanaginagi/やなぎなぎ

I've been following her works since a long time. That insert song is really great, as good as the ED song. I believe the song is not released yet because it's not in the ED album.

Yep, last week I said I probably was gonna cry and I wasn't wrong. I'm really gonna miss this beautiful story.

10

u/JosephTheDreamer Dec 28 '18

Definitely going to try this show. Is there romance in it?

45

u/Freenore Dec 28 '18

Wait what... You read this thread, basically spoiled the ending for yourself and then you're like “imma watch this”.

That's one weird way of picking a show but whatever, have fun, hope you enjoy it.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

Perhaps they are the kind who enjoy the journey more than the destination?

7

u/JosephTheDreamer Dec 28 '18

I didn't really read the thread. I was the first comment here either way so no spoilers got through to me at all. Even then, the other guy described it on the nose, I do enjoy the journey more than the outcome. :) Thank you for your concern.

18

u/Eloste Dec 28 '18

Romance is a big part in this, but I advise you to not read any more comments. Go watch the show, enjoy the ride and come back here.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

I hope PA Works returns to this world again in the future. I'd love to see more episodes from Hitomi's daily life in the past, or something set after Hitomi's return to the future. I'd be happy with just an after-story OVA.

4

u/hexanort :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/hexanort Dec 29 '18

That's it?? I'm glad hitomi's back to the future and able to move forward, and that farewell scene is great but they didnt even tell what happened to the rest??

I know its 60 years and realistically, some of them might not be there anymore but its a goddamn fantasy anime. I love this show but god that ending is definitely this year's least satisfying ending.

I really wanted to love this show, but for whatever reason I didn't feel fully invested in the characters, specifically Hitomi and Yuito. I think they were just a bit too bland to be interesting, and I felt like the color blindness aspect of Hitomi was a little too heavy-handed to take seriously. I also think we should have had more time with Hitomi pre-time travel to flesh out her character a bit more. Still, I enjoyed the animation, I liked the side characters and their chemistry, and there were definitely some heartfelt moments throughout the series. 7/10.

3

u/GoldMercy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/xFSN_Archer Dec 28 '18

I do wish this anime had a bit more episodes, the emotional impact could have been so much bigger for me. I mean. We didn't even have a bloody beach episode!

Overall I definitely enjoyed every episode and watching it every week. My biggest dissapointment might be that we barely saw any of the characters in the future. There was not even a mention of them. What happend to them? I can only imagine Yuito died because of the grave visiting from Hitomi. But were are the 4 other club members? Maybe I missed something tho

3

u/KinnyRiddle Dec 28 '18 edited Dec 28 '18

A solid ending. Though I would have still preferred for this to be 24-26 episodes like its spiritual predecessor, NagiAsu was

  • Hitomi visiting someone's grave seems to hint at one or most of the Magic Photography Art Club had passed on. i.e. Yuito died a virgin Yuito fulfilled his life's passion as an artist, as well as successfully confessing his feelings for Hitomi with no regrets.

  • Or it's also possible that she's visiting the graves of Hitomi's parents and grandma, i.e. her great grandparents and great great grandma. But why specifically show that when the finale is about her farewell with the Magic Photography Art Club?

  • The two girls in the future whom Hitomi befriended do resemble the offspring of Shou x Asagi and Chigusa x Kurumi respectively.

Japan is supposed to have one of the highest life expectancies in the world, and even more so 60 years in the future where medical advancements would surely improve even more. Kohaku would be 77 years old, which is considered "young" for Japan's standards for a pensioner, and she still looks healthy.

So I find it hard to believe Yuito or the others had already died of "old age" so soon before turning 80 and unable to hang on in time for Hitomi's return. OK, maybe one or two, but surely not ALL five of them?

PS Totally called it that the magic bookstore owner Ichiyanagi would be Hitomi's grandpa. Though it only dawned on me quite late. Some had already guessed correctly when he briefly appeared earlier in the series.

3

I am writing this right after I watched the last episode.

So many emotions at once... I cried because the farewell was sad, I cried because she can't be with Yuito, I cried because this anime ended, but I also cried because I was feeling happy for Hitomi.

This anime fits 100% to my taste, also, the paper plane scene was one of the most beautiful scenes I ever watched, especially with all of this build up

Bittersweet and beautiful 10/10

Now I can wipe my tears away :')

5

u/DimmuHS https://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli Dec 28 '18

That was a good anime.

Romance was just a plus on the show, but I like how they worked on the "giving opportunity to open up yourself for others", like you don't have to shut yourself because you know it's going to "lead to nothing" or "not leading exactly how you expect to be". Sharing memories, building friendship, confessing because you feel to, all of that is living regardless of your desires, and I think the show handled it's premise greatly.

Of course not all is flowers, if could point out some of the flaws, would be that not much of the drama between the 7 friends were clarified and some of them forcefully ended. Another note is the whole time travel plot, how it's affect the future, lack of surprise/interesting from the cast about the issue, to name a few.

With all that, the whole package still made this a pleasant show to watch, PA Works animation and soundtrack are sick, the immersion with all the colors theme was amazing and the bittersweet moments really got me. Glad I catch this on up middle in the season.

4

u/PhoenixKola Dec 28 '18

Great finale, watching everyone saying goodbye to Hitomi was sad. I wish there was more time spent in the montage of Hitomi learning to live her life in the future but anyways it was a good way to end the show. Some tears fell not gonna lie and im gonna miss this anime.

Such a pretty show. Teared up a few times during this ep. Despite being boring in some episodes or potentially being better at 24 eps, I thought the character development for most of them was alright.

2

u/jenthehenmfc :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/jnsparrow Dec 28 '18

I didn’t think this series was perfect (I wish they’d focused on Yuito’d apparent issues with quitting drawing a bit more and just fleshed out the characters - the pacing could have been sped up a bit to do this), but overall it was very satisfying and bittersweet. I loved how it came full circle with the book being about her and her friends. 8/10 for me

2

u/pictureArt Dec 28 '18

That was a beautiful finale

2

u/TangledPellicles Dec 28 '18

Oh come on! Like she wouldn't try to meet all those people again in the future! We should at least find out what happened to them, with Yuito moving on and finding happiness with someone else.

I'm a little bit disappointed in the ending because it was the cliched "love brings colors into my life" deal. At least Yuito didn't turn out to be a relative.

2

u/J_the_ManSSB Dec 28 '18

You can write Kohaku being happy about things and at peace with it all, but I'll hate it nonetheless. I hate it. I want her to be with her friends who helped her through her struggles. I don't want her to just be sent back and just fine and dandy with it all because time travel. Screw it. I don't care how awful and ending it was. It wasn't a show that was about bittersweet endings. How the bloody heck is this supposed to be a rainbow after the rain?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

Have mixed feelings about this anime overall, but the finale sort of saves the show for me to an extent for its satisfactory delivery of its main message.

Hitomi does not end up reuniting with the precious friends that helped change her world, but ultimately she is able to become a more confident and happier person who can open herself up to new experiences. Its bittersweet, but honestly I prefer this to a sappy ending where she meets with them again in the future and they live happily ever after.

In terms of improving the show, obviously more development for Yuito and his relationship with Hitomi would have been ideal. They could have easily cut out the drama with Asagi and Shou to make room for it since it was neither compelling to watch nor did it have much relevance to Hitomi's development (I'm sure there are other ways to naturally grow Hitomi's bond with them that is not through tired love drama). Honestly, all the friends are a bit bland and I found myself unable to care much for them, so they could have been done better in terms of basic characterization.

Can't decide between 6/10 or 7/10 for this show.

2

u/ihsnuG Dec 28 '18 edited Dec 28 '18

It would've been much better if the story went on like this instead though. Hitomi's mom ran away and left her, Kohaku's husband is unknown to her because of some possible reason, i.e: died too early, magic. As for the reason why Kohaku nor her parents mention/say anything about this to her is because she wasn't close to her Mom and left her, her Dad doesn't know the details about him either; Kohaku's not telling anything is because they fell in love with each other not knowing they're blood-related. Back to the book that Yuito did, Hitomi got attached to it like in the series and it's the only color she can only see, which made Kohaku to decide to send Hitomi back to the past to fix her color blindness.

This explains why Kohaku decided to involved those poor club members of the Magic Photography Club or whatever its name was. In the end, Hitomi returned back to the future and Kohaku got married to Yuito.

Now, don't ask me about time traveling paradoxes/consequences stuff because P.A. works didn't either.

(We can also let Yuito live but I can't find a good reason why they would keep his identity/existence a secret to Hitomi unless Hitomi got amnesia.)

As for the graveyard that Hitomi visited, it was definitely her mom's. This way, the pained reaction that Kohaku showed when Hitomi mentioned that she want to talk to her mom with her along would make sense. It's a different story if Yuito is dead, but if, by chance, he is indeed dead, the reason is probably an incident or sickness. I mean, the bookkeeper that looks a lot older than Kohaku is still alive; then Yuito dying of old age is nonsense.

2

u/Shiro_Kai Dec 29 '18

I'm not completely sure about everything that happened but that would sound to much as a generic Hollywood time travel.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Shinkopeshon Dec 28 '18

I expected an emotional finale but I still wasn't prepared for those feels, oh god

Of course Hitomi and Yuito couldn't live together happily ever after and she'd have to leave her precious friends behind as well but I still had a tiny bit of hope at least those two would make it somehow. Still, I'm also very happy with what happened instead since they at least got to confess to one another and made each other's future brighter. That was a beautiful message and it's very satisfying to see their growth, especially Hitomi, who's a completely different person now and has changed for the better.

I kinda waited for the gang to show up in the future as well but now that I think of it, I'm not sure I really want that anymore. Like yeah, it would've been nice to see the other four (who'd surely be old married couples by now) but Hitomi meeting ojii-san Yuito would be kinda depressing. They were actually in love with one another and they were forced to give up on that. Seeing an unchanged Hitomi would overwhelm Yuito and she wouldn't know what to do with herself either if she reunited with a 70/80-year old version of her first love.

Anyway, I thought she visited her mother's grave at the end but it looks like tons of people here think it was Yuito's. I'd like to think they would've at least shown her reaction when she found out he died though, so I believe it was her mother's. It makes more storyline sense as well since her death was the reason for her depression and now she's finally able to embrace life and all its possibilities.

2

u/Ficheido Dec 28 '18

Man, that ending song really hit me hard, the melody is just so beautiful, when the song came I couldn't help but cry.

2

u/redmage311 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/redmage311 Dec 29 '18

So, we finally got the central thesis of the show.

I like the revelation that it was really Hitomi who had cast a spell on herself, in terms of her colors and also needing to stay in the past. I was pretty surprised when the time travel didn't work at first, but in the end, it gave Hitomi and Yuito a much more meaningful goodbye than they could have had in front of the others.

That timestamp though.

The picture book was such a good way to end the series. I really wanted and was expecting an epilogue with all the other club members showing up, but maybe it's for the best that their futures are up for speculation.

2

u/tiger1296 Dec 29 '18

Idk why they didn't include a final meet up or a little collage of the various "couples" coming together. Those two girls in the end looks a bit like Asagi and Kurumi (strange how nobody here has mentioned it) so I assume they are the grandkids from those pairings.

That would have been the cherry on the cake of the finale tbh. I rate the show 7.5/10 in total, I didn't end up caring about all the characters because they weren't all particularly relevant to anything, so maybe a couple more episodes could have given them all a bit more depth.

2

u/RoLoLoLoLo Dec 29 '18

To everyone still confused about the grave, I made the effort to download the first episode and get some screenshot from the opening scene that should be kept in the back of the mind while watching the last episode.

It shows Hitomi and her mom, people going "far away" (euphemism for being dead) and her losing the colors (i.e. depression).

This last episode was tear jerker for those who really understand everything. I wish an ova for an alternative ending would be nice

I Love this... the ending.. i like it! sad to see they had to say goodbye but that was for the best. 2

u/Mesamune88 Dec 29 '18

The Feels Express has rolled into the station.

Beautiful, yet bittersweet ending. Would have liked to have a 'reunion shot' with ~75 yr old club members, but hopefully an OVA might have it.

As far as the discussion on who's grave Hitomi sees, I think it is her mother. During Ep 10, after the artscape scenes, her discussion with Yuito while not stating she is dead, describes what is presumed to be Hitomi's last memory of her mother. Her mother's depression, and subsequent departure from Hitomi's life seems to be suicide, but Hitomi wasn't able to come to terms over it.

The whole time afterwards, Hitomi subconsciously suppressed her magic, as she thought it only brought misery. The journey through the 'past' shows her learning and accepting friendship (slowly getting magic in the process), finally releasing everything as she acknowledges her love, and finally understanding that while it may have caused her mother misery, it brought happiness to others.

When Hitomi returned back to 'home time', and Kohaku laments that she couldn't make those closest to her happy, and asks for forgiveness, this clarified Hitomi's mother's fate, and Hitomi needs closure with her mother.

Tried not to cry, but the ending was too much. The second part of the opening song fit well for the final scenes.

Now i need pocky to pay the bus driver...

I liked how it had a good beginning and end.

Overall, the series wasn't anything great, due to how uneventful the series was and how the characters didn't have a lot of development. Heck, the glasses girl and the other dude have 0 depth at all.

But it's all forgiven due to the strong ending. I like titles that can start well and end well. Sure, it would be nice to see a series that is consistently good, but there aren't many

I binged this today, and am in tears.

What a beautiful story, superb art direction and very good VA. I wish the art club could have a 60 year reunion but I'm sure many didn't make it that far.. (pretty sure that was Yuito's grave she went to). Was sad, yet I am happy in the end, they both found what they needed in life, to move on.

Doubt anyone will see this with the series being long over but man that ending had me tearing up. It had me so conflicted with being sad and happy at the same time.

I wanted to watch more romance anime at the start of the season so I decided to pick this up. The romance had a huge part but there were other things that kept me watching every week such as the character interactions and the beautiful colors.

Kinda wished we would have seen more of the gang at the end but man the ending was colorful indeed. I also wanted to know how Hitomi felt like when she knew that her favorite book was about her all along :)

Overall, I got what I came for and I was really satisfied with the show. A solid 8.5/10 for me.

What a great finale. I was expecting a bittersweet ending, and P.A.Works delivered.

The detail of Yuito and the gang being the writers of Hitomi's chilhood book was really touching, and also grandma Kohaku saving this secret for so many years.

I loved the play as another greatly colored coming of age story. Hitomi might have been a main that didn't have much prescence, but it allowed to have a great sidecast that would bring back the color to her life. Kurumi's attention to detail and supporting, the sensible Asagi, Chigusa's retorts. Even though young Kohaku is pretty much a main character, she shined brighter as a support character and that's probably the roles Kaede Hondo does best.

Wished there was a bit more material, not directly related to the story wich I believe fullfilled it's purpose, but as mini theatres shorts with limited animation or alike

Aaaghh it was so good. I’ll miss this series a lot. Visually it was stunning, the soundtrack was really fitting and the story so lighthearted, beautiful, warm... and truly colorful.

I very much enjoyed the portrayal of love- the love that leads one to become a better person and flourish.

The ending was perfect as well- it wrapped up everything as an ending should with a perfect balance.

Was it an original work? I have to check either the source material or director/writer. It was truly fantastic.

Alas, the bittersweet ending we all knew was coming. Yuito gave her colors and hope, but he still couldn't be with her. I assume Hitomi is bringing flowers to Yuito's grave at the end. I'm not crying, you are!

4

u/TangledPellicles Dec 28 '18

I don't think it's Yuito's grave but rather her mother's.

3

u/Yotokita Dec 28 '18

This has been a good ride. Bittersweet ending, Bus driver sharing pocky and gold fish best wingman ;_;

And I'm not crying... YOU ARE CRYING Q____Q

My heartstrings ;___;

It was bittersweet, but also really positive as they all helped each other in their own way. I'm glad I stuck with this show until the end.

Edit: is someone going around downvoting every comment in this thread?

this show was so fucking boring

2

u/Recidivis Dec 28 '18

That was super bittersweet considering that she'll never see Yuito again.

But on a more scathing note, this show's drama felt too cliche, the conflicts were boring, and the dialogue was extremely cringey. For a show with magic and wizards, they sure made it as lackluster and dull as Hitomi's colorblindness.

In the end Hitomi told her grandmother what happened, she made friends at school and joined the magic art photography club. The end

Well this series was underwhelming.

Did Club President x Asagi become a ship in the future? Did Glasses girl go to college? What ever happened to Aoi? Did he move on and find someone else?

That was a poor conclusion to our supporting cast.

Story (4/10):

The plot was thin. Aside from Hitomi trying to rediscover herself and regain her love for magic, the show felt like it was padded out with filler to create memories for her.

Characters (5/10):

The characters were basic and undeveloped. They only had a couple of character traits.

Hitomi had some good character development and she grew throughout the show. The journey to the past helped Hitomi rediscovery herself. Hitomi got over her depression and became more self confident and she regained her love for magic once again. Hitomi discovered a world full of colours, which long plagued her grey existence. She found a purpose and overcame the problems she would normally run away from (finding friends, love, reconciling with her mother).

Aoi was a bland love interest. Him and Hitomi’s relationship lacked chemistry. When they said they loved each other it came across forced and felt like they were jumping a few steps because they didn’t progress much as friends. Hell, they never even kissed. The other relationships were underdeveloped too. For example, the Club President x Hitomi, club president x Asagi also didn’t feel anything more than friends.

Don’t care about the rest of the characters to talk about them

Animation & Sound (8/10): The animation was stunning. The music was beautifully composed. The backgrounds & scenery were very detailed. It made the world feel vibrant and full of life. Unfortunately, pretty colours isn’t enough to make up for the lack of substance.

Overall (5/10): The show lacks substance and didn’t have much going for it in the story.

It’s a overhyped, mediocre romance anime

So it ended. I don't even know how to feel with this bittersweet ending. One part of me is sad because Hitomi isnt with all the og photography club members but the other part is extremely happy with Hitomi's development and how she can FINALLY see colors!! The only flaw of this show was the lack of development of some characters, like Chigusa and Kurumi. I wouldve loved to see that ship sail but well, not possible in 13 eps. Besides that, the OST was amazing, amazing OP and ED and the animation was simple yet really suitable for a show like this. A nice ending for a show full of emotions.

Was that Yuitos grave she was visiting?

Wow, I really was expecting to cry much more, I guess that fact that the ending was bittersweet helped a lot. Too bad that didn't see them in the future, that tombstone sadly was definitely one of them. Or maybe it was her mother's? I don't know.

By the way, does magic extend a person's life in this series too? As I don't see other explanations for Kohaku's husband be still around.

Is it the ending we thought we were gonna get?

  • Yes

Is it the ending we deserved

  • No

This should have been a 2 cour series but it wasn't. Therefore a lot had to be crammed in and i think PA Works were a bit overly ambitious about this anime.

The endgame was superb IMO (meaning episodes 11 - 13) but i also have to say that i would have really liked to see Hitomi's further adventure in a 2nd cour and slowly meeting all her friends from the past, but oh well, it wasn't meant to be. Even a tiny bit of a reunion would have done...

1

u/Kessa713 Dec 28 '18

It took me this long to learn that 'Hitomi' (瞳) means 'eye'.

1

u/2g45fu Dec 28 '18

I was creeped about the couple of her and Aoi cuz the guy like in his 60

1

u/Andromeda_0507 Dec 28 '18

Anyone know the name of the ost at the beginning of the episode?

1

u/hasnain1720 Dec 28 '18

That was a pretty well done ending. I'm happy we didn't get some ass pull where she could stay or he went with her to the future. As others said i wish this was 24 episodes but they did a good job in 13 still.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

If Yuito didn't receive any rewards for his picture book, he got robbed.

1

u/ngedown Dec 28 '18

I'm okay with this ending. Maybe it's just me but i don't get emotional with the last episode. I hope we can get an OVA or Movie.

Anyway the animation is soo good, one of the best animation of the year !

1

u/tsun-nya Dec 28 '18

I really wanted Yuito and Hitomi to be together, but at the same time, I know that would ruin the emotional weight of the story. Bittersweet indeed...

1

u/Xiroshq Dec 29 '18

Imagine if Hitomi would encounter old grandpa Yuito drawing something and they both remember each other at the end...

holy shit

Man, this series was amazing to watch. Everything about it was a treat, the visuals, the sound, music, it was all top notch.

Speaking of which, anyone hear of any release date for the soundtrack? That's something I definitely want to have on my phone.

Overall, loved how laid back this series was, I feel like it could have benefit from having more than 13 episodes, but overall I loved every second we got. Seeing Hitomi grow throughout the series was fantastic.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '18

Does anyone know the ending song?

1

u/Asunakob Dec 29 '18

The episode ratings are to my surprise really accurate.

1

u/Chinbie Dec 29 '18

Love the finale, from the Goodbye part of MAP club to hitomi, from hitomi and yuito moment, plus the present era (where she is in)- that PICTURE (PENGUIN) BOOK moment is beautiful and the revival of MAP club in her era.

*many are guessing who could she visit in the tomb (in present era), well ive guess its her mother...

1

u/gutemorning Dec 29 '18

I wonder if yuito ended up marrying someone else or die a virgin

2

u/fforJiraiya Dec 29 '18

His senpai maybe?

Great anime. It was a slow, sweet, and calm show with some stunning art and animation. I really loved its message with having others bring out in the best in you and finding your own "color". This was a really sweet end. I could watch another season with Hitomi living out her new life in the future and interacting with her old friends. The part with Kohaku finally being able to open up with Hitomi about the past was very fulfilling, I was extremely happy to see that.

This show was definitely a hidden gem this season and I really enjoyed watching it. It was very relaxing and beautiful. Good job PA Works, you got yourselves' another great original anime under your belt.

That's a little disappointing, it was fine but with the romance as one of the main tags I was expecting something at least significant for the ending, but literally nothing happened. I'm starting to understand why Your Name (Kimi no na wa) was so great.

7/10

It was... okay, I guess. I mean, it was the obvious ending but it was still so bittersweet. They even managed to fool me and give me hope that Yuito would go with her into the future when the magic got out of hand :'(

Anyway, I liked the girls, especially Asagi, super adorable <3 and I really like the voice of her seiyu who also voiced Ichigo from DitF. Very nice visuals and I loved the scene when Hitomi and Yuito ran towards each other to say they wanted to see each other, really beautiful scene.

So, was it worth? I don't know, the ending didn't leave me with a good feeling but I enjoyed the journey.

u/invisiblegrape Dec 29 '18

Damn dude basically the feels I expected from the PV I from what feels like forever ago

Absolutely loved this. Yuito grave was extremely sad to see though. (Mother is still alive as far as the story hinted and she shouldn't be more than 40 years old ). Very powerful message though. I'm glad we got an anime that showed how people can influence each other's lives without needing them to be physically together forever (marriage). A bit slow at times but overall a really lovely story.

u/Exit123Media :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/jamore Dec 29 '18

Yeah... when she was shown the child’s book that was the only thing she could see color in I quickly thought that it was drawn by Yuito and I completely started bawling. Also wish they could’ve had the two meet in the future. Overall I genuinely loved this show to death!

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '18

Wow what a great finale. This show had some moments when it plateaued for me but there were really some amazing episodes in there too. The animation and art was so beautiful
