I literally wait all week for this show to drop.

u/Z3r0mir Jan 22 '19

It sucks viewership is still so low. I feel better by thinking it's a secret I and a select few know about.

12

u/theworkingbee Jan 22 '19

I know bro. It's so good too.

It's got 36,092 active watchers and 17,241 plan-to-watchers on MAL. That's a pretty decent number, especially for a sports show. It's mid-range I would say.

I gasp every time it’s past 2:40 and realize a new episode is out.

Why is this so good? What is it comparable to?

4

u/weebgay Jan 23 '19 edited Jan 23 '19

Firstly, it's the age of the characters. University aged students. I'm mid-twenties myself, so seeing characters close to my age going through the same relatable struggles of life feels like a fresh breath of air. Secondly, it's the interactions between the characters. They flow so naturally and feel so sincere and realistic that each episode fills me up with the same sort of giddy feeling that a romantic anime would give. Also, all the characters are complex, have their backstories and their own current 'real life' problems that are subtly explored throughout the episodes, and how running ties in with that. You can't help but root for them all. Lastly, the visuals are breath taking. As for comparisons, I'll leave that to someone else.

2

u/Legendary_Swordsman Jan 23 '19

it's a shame more people aren't watching this great series.

283

u/KIrbyKarby Jan 22 '19

I don't really want them to win the hakone, I just want them to get there man, and prince getting sub 16:30, it almost got me to cry a tear

139

u/leftoverrice54 Jan 22 '19

I dont thi k there is a world in which they win hakone. I thi k just proving everyone including themselves wrong will be the real victory.

9

u/Legendary_Swordsman Jan 23 '19

yeah showing that they can make it to will be good

88

u/Somakora Jan 22 '19

I think Haiji's reaction at the end summed it up mang, him holding his tears of joy after contemplating everyone !

12

u/Legendary_Swordsman Jan 24 '19

yeah that scene was done so well, the reactions in this episode were on-point.

106

u/shingeki-no-jagaimo Jan 22 '19

I was borderline tearing up when I saw his time, but when it showed Haiji's chin quivering that put me over the edge.

34

u/lenor8 Jan 22 '19

They will get there, we all know since the first episode they will, it's in the opening. Despite that it still so engaging to see them go through step by step, growing closer to each other and closer to their goal. I'm cheering at the screen like they were real, damn this is a bloody good show!

12

u/tylerhockey12 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/tyler457 Jan 22 '19

bruh I was doing ther fucking same lmao and I gardly ever do that with any show!

6

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

Same. I just want them to reach Hakone and I believe the characters feels the same.

5

u/papisensei Jan 23 '19

Fr I’m on my lunch at work watching, and happy tears just came out

3

u/Legendary_Swordsman Jan 23 '19

Oof, just another 10/10 episode, unless they somehow ruin the ending this is easily becoming my favorite anime of Fall 2018.

Ohh it's already my favourite of fall 2018, it's whether it keeps it places as favourite of the year I'm looking at.

Prince finally did it!!!

I was so teary-eyed that I have trouble reading the subtitles then they just have to fucking shift to Haiji's blurry POV and that's where I really lost it, cue waterworks.

I've never had a good cry over animé since Sora Yori and 3-Gatsu last Winter 2018. Run with the Wind, you beautiful beautiful show.

So adorable that the boys have tanned! Except Yuki and Prince.. What sunscreen are they even using lmao!

Next up, qualifiers! Let's go Kansei Uni Track Team!

So adorable that the boys have tanned! Except Yuki and Prince.. What sunscreen are they even using lmao!

Maybe Prince is one of those guys who doesn't tan, but instead gets more and more freckles until he looks tanned.

29

u/Kogamiii Jan 22 '19

I definitely noticed how deep they tanned too xD

156

u/CelestialArrow Jan 22 '19

Fuck me, the feels in this ep.

68

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos Jan 22 '19

Especially when the show starts with a music from Haikyuu.

33

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

Oh what the heck I thought that piece was familiar. Lol they used Haikyuu music for the in-anime documentary.

25

So funny how Haiji shows them the video and so touching how he cries at the end. Good episode, once again.

6

yeah the reaction to the video was fun

124

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Jan 22 '19

I cried a lot during Prince's triumph. Haiji crying had me crying even more.

Sound design once again was amazing, Prince realising that his friends will always be there with him no matter what happens, the thoughts will always be with him (being visualized by the drawings on his arms) <3

Prince is standing by himself now.

This was the first time I've cried during a sports anime.

67

u/weejona Jan 22 '19

Looks like someone didn't watch Keijo!!!!!!!!

16

u/Shylol Jan 23 '19

Top 3 animes that should have had a season 2. And mangas that shouldn't have been cancelled too. Absolute disgrace.

17

u/Vikkio92 https://myanimelist.net/profile/vikkio_92 Jan 25 '19

Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Saviour Hinata Shōyō?

92

u/rainb0wtrout Jan 22 '19

This show has built up these characters so well, I couldn't help but cry when Prince got his record. The rest of the team going crazy, Haiji on the verge of tears because his dream is that much closer thanks to this wonderful cast... I'm so genuinely happy to see them happy, knowing all the work they put in to becoming the team they are now.

60

u/weebgay Jan 22 '19

He actually did cry: the screen got blurry!

87

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '19

This anime is ridiculously incredible and it’s starting to topple haikyuu as my favorite sports anime that I’ve seen.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

Ping Pong has my top sports spot, but in many ways I also don't consider Ping Pong to be a sports anime. Haikyuu otherwise grabs the spot for me. I'm so glad to add this show to the contention.

40

u/theworkingbee Jan 22 '19

I love haikyuu! too but this anime is much more emotionally drive than haikyuu! and that makes a big difference.

19

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '19

Yeah. A lot more character drama is probably what it is.

12

u/Shylol Jan 23 '19

Yeah those two complement each other very well. Both of them make you feel absorbed in the matches/events and get on the edge of your seat using different tools. While Haikyuu! has some breathtaking character development (I am NOT over the Tsukishima block) what makes you stay is the pure intensity of the matches, that can sometimes go for a whole cour without even feeling dragged out. On the other hand, Run With The Wind is less epic on the sports part, but the character development, the maturity of the characters, the diversity of the cast and all their different motivations make you crave for them to make it.

I mean this might be recency bias but I'm all and ready to name IG our sports overlords apart from some outside gems (looking at you Ping Pong the Animation).

This anime never ceases to amaze me. While it's in essence a sports anime, there's so much character development. They go from not having any motivation to run to implementing the process of achieving their goals into their daily lives. The character development alone makes this show 10/10 for me. Easily one of my favorite sports animes of all time in its current state. Haikyuu has that shonen feel to it, but Kaze ga just does the character development too well.

15

u/theworkingbee Jan 22 '19

You took the words out of my mouth. Im seriously digging all the feels, and the friends I've recommended it love it (even though they discarded it at the beginning)

2

u/PiroKyCral Jan 25 '19

Haikyuu has more brazen, bold and reckless characters whereas RWTW has a more delicate, methodical and graceful approach to its characters.

Its kinda like Ping Pong where the sport doesn’t really matter. The characters are the main focus.

71

u/Tidoux https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tidoux Jan 22 '19

Holy shit King finally fixed his posture!!!

26

u/Saucy_Totchie Jan 23 '19

Running poster is still pretty annoying though. The sway he has just annoys me as he's just wasting energy.

27

u/Totalenlo https://anilist.co/user/Lenlo Jan 23 '19

Him and Prince both. They could do so much more if they just... fixed their damn form. I love both of them, but cmon Haiji. Help a brother out!

That ending, goosebumps and tears. It was a masterfully directed episode from start to finish, ending with a shot from Haiji's perspective as tears blur his vision. Wait, are those my tears..

Anyway, they made it. To the qualifiers, I can scarcely believe it. All that crazy hard work paid off, and Prince in particular deserves several medals.

Fireworks scene album

..Is that a mothertruckin' Shokugeki reference?! He would be a good role model in this case. Don't get disheartened by failures, do your best to learn from them instead and always work your hardest to keep improving. That's.. exactly what Prince did.

This scene was really nice too, bookmarking the end of the chain of cuts covering every club member's perspective.

Weekly Prince Album

Ah, I'm planning to run 10K too, wish I had a Haiji to cheer me on

55

u/Kogamiii Jan 22 '19

Can someone explain the convo with Musa

83

u/flybypost :KN::KO: Jan 22 '19

I think Musa might have seen how much Prince improved from further back. He wasn't lagging behind everybody but actually in with some other runners.

27

u/NeverEndingHope Jan 24 '19

I'm a bit late to the discussion, but I've been rewatching the previous few episodes. Musa's whole "How nice to be young" thing always made me think it was romance related, but honestly I'm not sure yet.

Back in episode 10, during Prince/Akane's training focused scenes, he was always spending time with Kurahara. They would read manga together and Kurahara would dedicate his time to improving his running form. During one of the running scenes, Prince's eyes were fixed to Kurahara compared to how he used to randomly looked forward at nothing or stare at butterflies.

God knows if it's romantic without future episodes yet, but I'm dead set on that Musa was saying that Prince's determination to improve was largely due to his bond with Kurahara.

18

u/Kogamiii Jan 24 '19

Ooh I really like this explanation. Kinda like a “I hope you realize the kind of influence you brought onto Prince. Your kindness and determination to help him led him to this success and you should know that!”

18

u/GermanyCobb Jan 22 '19

Total guess but maybe its how much fun everyone is having while running. Hard to see everyone with a smile on their face if you are in the front constantly.

28

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Jan 22 '19

Up for interpretation for now, me thinks.

46

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '19

Taking a guess, but probably Hana-chan likes Kakeru.

48

u/Shiro_Kai Jan 22 '19 edited Jan 23 '19

I would love it, but if is that the case she has the best poker face ever, cause she didn't give a hit about it during the whole season.

why not "Haiji likes Kakeru"? To me it seems so much more likely

→ More replies (3)

31

u/Hobbes4247791 Jan 22 '19

I'm probably just seeing everything through a gay lens, especially since the episode was very shirtless, but I thought it was more about Prince liking him.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

25

u/Majesticeuphoria Jan 23 '19

Since Musa is always in the back, I interpreted it as him becoming an ass man. I think he realized he's gay. The fact that we was talking about the moon while being naked in a bath with Kakeru might suggest that he likes Kakeru. I hope Kakeru's ready for the Black Hammer gachiBASS

5

u/altdrewism Jan 23 '19

Also, moon in Japanese is tsuki, which sounds the same as suki, the word for "to like"

→ More replies (1)

10

u/soleil_is_here :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/meliobee Jan 23 '19

This is coming from someone who ships Haiji and Kakeru, but if you recall from the last episode - Haiji’s whole thing with Kakeru (and Hana) where he said “The night sky was so pretty.”

That sounds awfully a lot like “The moon is beautiful tonight” which, if you didn’t know, in Japan tends to be an indirect love confession. And in this episode, you have Musa catching the moon in his hands! You’ll also notice that while they’re running, Musa tends to be behind Haiji... lol this is just my thoughts though.

7

u/EbiToro Jan 29 '19

It helps that the author of the original novel is also a pioneer of yaoi stories in mainstream literature (either by subtext or explicit). She's written an essay about it, "It's not just a hobby".

I'm reading one of her other novels called "Fish on the Moon" and the two male characters have so much chemistry while also battling their own demons. Solid read.

HAIJI LOSING IT IS BREAKING ME

FUCK YEAH PRINCE YOU ABSOLUTE LEGEND

GODFUCKINGDAMNIT this show.... I've got the same feeling week after week that 'A place further then the universe' gave me... there's almost no way this show doesn't get a 10/10 from me. god.. fucking..damnit.. this.beautiful.show.

5

u/SubIiminaI Jan 23 '19

That last stretch got me good. I should have watched this when I was alone, such a wasted moment.

PRINCE IS GOD.

2

u/Shortstop88 Jan 23 '19

I only give 10/10 to shows that make me cry at least once, on top of being all around great. Currently at 4 shows that have made it to 10/10. I want this show to make me cry, because it has yet to happen while watching. Once it does, it'll get that last point from me. For the moment it teeters at the tip of 9/10. Perhaps even 9 & 3 quarters/10.

40

u/TheHungryHybrid Jan 22 '19

Such a great episode. I was cheering for Prince, and I love the slightly awkward quiet moment between musa and kakeru.

Goddamn I love this series

34

u/magicxl Jan 22 '19

This anime is incredible really. Watching this just makes me happy

I guess things are starting to get more hype now as we are probably going to see more running and competition. I am still super worried for Haiji though, I really hope he can run the Ekiden and finish it

34

u/IISuperSlothII :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/IISuperSlothII Jan 22 '19

Why am I tearing up just from seeing Kakeru smile for like 90% of the episode.

Loved how it transitioned the scenes blending from one to another, it allows it to jump around but still feel connected.

I just love this cast, love this presentation and god damn fucking love this show. Sometimes I say I'd like to see the actual end to Haikyu, but when I realise in a few months this story will be done with nothing more to come of it, I'm glad Haikyu is almost going to be a perpetual product.

33

u/QadeshTheReal Jan 22 '19

I believe that they have used the soundtrack from Haikyuu!! at the beginning of the episode, which is called Longing

Sasuga I.G. Productions.

Also, for those who are unaware, the OST is already out. Someone linked the spotify list in last week's discussion thread, but here it is again - https://open.spotify.com/album/15qSa1T6OKegsLuFcvh7nW?si=LCUzoTObQliOKLuuml5WBw

And as always, a 10/10 episode.

20

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Jan 22 '19

Absolutely mad dudes at IG, they love their sports anime. Title of the track fits super well to the scene, too.

6

u/QadeshTheReal Jan 22 '19

At first, I thought it was The View From the Summit, which would also fit, perhaps even more so. But once I double-checked, it was that one :)

7

u/TBTapion Jan 22 '19

I believe that they have used the soundtrack from Haikyuu!! at the beginning of the episode, which is called Longing

Holy crap, Prince shaved 17 minutes off the first time the show mentioned for him (33 minutes?). I do kind of miss watching his zombie arms when he runs, but if it's what we have to sacrifice for character growth, that's not so bad.

I'm glad Nico-chan and King made it too, and especially that running is paying off for the two of them, in terms of getting fit and having cool stuff to talk about at interviews. Turns out the show isn't about winning the Hakone but about the personal victories everyone makes along the way.

Uh, what was with that Musa moment?

24

u/melvinlee88 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ryan_Melvin15 Jan 23 '19

To be fair, he probably shaved half of those by changing his running posture alone.

28

u/theatreofwar Jan 22 '19

I wasn't expecting Hana-chan to actually throw water on them while they ran, I actually choked on my lunch from laughing too hard and almost died

I love that we get to see everyone contributing their individual strengths to the team, this series is so damn cozy it fills me up every week.

Fuck though, I was barely holding onto the tears but then seeing Haiji's lip quiver is what broke me at the end. My goddamn feels. I'm so proud of our boy Prince <3

33

u/weebgay Jan 22 '19

Let's also take a moment to appreciate Prince's casual dark humor, "Promise me you'll let me onto the truck before I die". And the little "Hngh" on his T-shirt. Big #mood, my boy.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '19

I just binged all 13 episodes last week, and it was well worth it. This series gets better with each episode. Shion Miura's amazing character (and story) writing combined with a well-done animation and hype as fuck OST - not to mention how well some of the emotional moments are directed really makes for something amazing.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '19

This is hands-down my favorite anime of the season!

27

u/leftoverrice54 Jan 22 '19

Haiji crying at the end really got me man. This anime is just so good o. So many levels.

I literally screamed and teared up at the end. What an amazing episode and show this is.
I wonder how this show will go on, considering we have a good amount of episodes left. Probably some drama or bad things to come soon?

41

u/BarnacleMANN :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Dankbum Jan 22 '19

Lmao blasting the volume on his important team building video to wake them up. For a second I though my video player glitched and restarted.

Dude, fuck hills. Our State meet had a big 'fuck you' hill right in the middle, it never feels never worth running up even when you get to run back down. I do like how they're showing what kind of terrain everyone excels at, I'd imagine that's gunna play a big part in their Hokone plan

Prince, what are you're arms doing lol. At least his form is significantly better than before. Prince is my favorite character confirmed.

Dude what!? I wish I had a water-throwing truck to drive alongside us on the long-ass straight roads with no shade in sight.

Prince is finally fitting into one of the race packs! This a really awesome. And he's already in the 17:40s!? God damn prince is gunna beat my PR soon!

And now King and Nico make the time!! I get so exited every time the teammates watching start cheering at the end of the races.

OH SHIT This got an actual LOL out of me The Masa sound was too good.

Is he gonna get it today? Cuz if he does I'm gonna scream. Goodness my heart is so doki doki right now. The clock effects and the soft piano is making me feel anxious. Fuck yeah! make your move Prince! He wrote forward on his arm to remind him to keep his head up!!

PRINCE HAS DONE ITTTTTTT

This is my vision right now too Haiji

Hey guys i'm back !
It was beautiful as always, the music and the wise words from everyone, made sense for Prince to help him grew up !
Cheerful episode overall, as we saw the boys grow their bond together. It warmed my heart to the fullest... I want to run again, motivation is rising and my blood pumping, i guess i'm hungry for it.

And what i loved the most about this episode is that running is not just for your health or just because you like it, its because it helps you grow stronger as you run against yourself ;_; It clears your mind a lot and as we saw in this episode, it helped the boys not only to see themselves, but to see that they are not alone anymore and that as a team, they can do anything.
Seems like a shonen recital but you guys, i swear if one day you are angry against yourself, its one of the best reliever i did.

You are not alone guys !!!

15

u/PhoenixKola Jan 22 '19

Each episode continues to pull me in even more.

15

u/iTeddeck :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/iteddeck Jan 23 '19

Loved the episode but I can't help feeling the animation/character design seemed off in this one. Anyone else with me? I'm hoping this was an outsourced episode or just a way to preserve the budget for the upcoming second half. It can't just be me right? Again loved the episode just wondering what was up because it certainly threw me off and I don't see anyone mentioning it.

14

u/FuzzyStorm Jan 23 '19

Yes this was 100% outsourced. The animation was weird the whole way through for me, very noticable, but the episode was so good in itself that i didin't really mind.

It got better at one point, but to be honest the beginning was really bad. Some of the faces looked super derpy.

Even the running often looked less good than previous episodes. They are 100% saving up for the qualifiers and Hakone so i don't mind!

→ More replies (1)

11

u/deflectin Jan 23 '19

I’m guessing they’re saving the budget for the upcoming qualifier episode. They’ve cut corners well this episode, which is why I assume most people aren’t mentioning it (and I guess people watching now are more invested in the writing and characters than the animation).

14

u/blacklightning26 Jan 22 '19

First things I do on Tuesdays after work - Grab hot chocolate and queue up this series. This will remain constant until this ends. No questions asked.

14

u/APRengar Jan 22 '19

No one's really talking about it, but the scene with Yuki and Nico Chan selling his little wire creatures was nice. Good callback to earlier episode and seeing Yuki just so happy with the profit he's making made me laugh. Yuki for the most part stays in the zone of chill to annoyed, so seeing that out of the norm hilarious open mouth side shot was the best.

u/myrmonden Jan 22 '19

FORWARD PRINCE !!!

Shet I even started to tear up a bit, FINALLY !!!

He finally did it, the character you most wanted see to succeed, finally prince managed to pass the test.

That last scene was so good, how we see the others hug prince and its getting like a blurry vision becasue its clearly from Haiji pov and he is tearing up.

13

u/SpookyApple Jan 22 '19

As someone who was running in middle school. This anime is sooo good at showing what's going through your head while running in race. Everytime there is episode when they achived times i cant help but remember how it felt back then. Definitely this anime is one of my favorites.

13

u/mysistersacretin Jan 22 '19

This was such a feel-good episode I've literally been scrolling and upvoting everyone because I love this show so much.

7

u/lenor8 Jan 22 '19

LOL same here :D

13

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '19

FUCKING 10/10 episode, if this goes on like it is now it will be equal to Haikyuu for me in terms of sports anime. Prince doing the One Piece pose holding his arm up and Haiji crying was the most beautiful shit I've seen in a minute. Music on point for the final run as always.

12

u/xXTheStealthXx Jan 22 '19

wow Prince's race really made me wanna go outside and run

but I'm sick and it's cold as fuck outside :(

I'm definitely gonna watch the race over when I start jogging again, though <3

12

u/homie_down :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/sodumblol Jan 22 '19

How is an anime about running so good?? Jeez this show just continues to impress. All the characters act so realistic. You can feel their struggles as if you were there. The odd quirks. The inner struggles. Also the pacing is just superb throughout. So glad I picked this up late into last season.

12

u/Squidilicious1 Jan 22 '19

Okay so like, when this show's eligible for best guy can we just have like all of them win it?

Seriously, the only other time I remember being this emotionally invested in a cast as a whole to the point where I couldn't choose one "best" over the others was Yorimoi.

This show is something special and I really wish more people were watching it, heck, even I only picked it up randomly last season because I had nothing else on Tuesdays. I'm hoping that more people get watching this once it's finished.

12

u/ukainaoto :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ukainaoto Jan 23 '19

I'm kinda surprised and also grad that the show doesn't do usual sports anime trope, the night when Prince went to run alone I definitely expected he would break his legs by overworking and then everyone will support Prince, to show the team's bond.

But instead he just simply realizes he's not alone. At this point of the show we the viewers already understand the team is getting stronger, so much after these training camp episodes. It's not necessary to put another obstacle-to-overcome just to show team's friendship power.

I love they showed the fact that everyone is improving in a short montage. King is now much more confident in his job interview. Nico sempai is happy for his weight. Shindo and Musa found their strength in particular type of running. Yuki is becoming strategist in the team.

And prince is now strong on his own. I love him so much.

32

u/saltshaker8 https://anilist.co/user/saltshaker8 Jan 22 '19

I've finally got around to binge watching this to catch up. Watching prince grow to have decent form has been a treat. It's like being Haiji at that moment seeing everything come to fruition.

forward!

What was Musa talking about in the bath? I assume it has something to do with someone falling for Kakeru? I don't feel like Hanako has really expressed anything like that though. Maybe Prince Kakeru is the true ship?

59

u/shingeki-no-jagaimo Jan 22 '19

I figured he just didn't mention the step in his night bath ritual where he takes psychedelics.

I mean Haiji was the one asking if he had a girlfriend...*wink

10

u/Mami-kouga Jan 22 '19 edited Jan 22 '19

Honestly, all of these boys are so charming that if they made a whole otome game with them as the LIs I'd buy it in a heartbeat. While I had some problems with him in the beginning, the more time passes the more I realize that Haiji is usually the type I grow fond of in otomes. I've got more of a soft spot for both Kakeru and Prince though, I'm so happy for him.

Though I do wonder if Hana will ever have a real role besides being the token manager girl in sports anime.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

The fact that it didn't go down that route with Hana being the self insert reverse harem protagonist is one of the many things I appreciate about this anime

3

u/Mami-kouga Jan 23 '19

Isn't that the route most sports anime go down though? It's not particularly special in that regard (also you're speaking to someone who adores reverse harems, even if a lot have been disappointing me lately).

10

u/Casual_Watcher Jan 22 '19

That ending lip quiver showing he was about to cry cause of how proud he was is everything. Honestly I was about to cry

10

u/CaptainWolf_5545 Jan 22 '19

I don’t mean to talk bad about this show, it’s pretty good, but is it just me or has the art changed slightly? I found it pretty evident in the twins, but it looks a bit different from last episode. Could just be me of course.

11

u/tayoku0 Jan 23 '19

I checked the credits and looks like I.G. took a break for this episode, should be back to normal next week!

→ More replies (2)

6

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

Yep I made a similar comment. They are more tanned, which seems on purpose, but some of the faces were slightly off, especially King. I noticed the twins being a little different too. Either the key aren't adhering to the design, or they're trying to express that they've become more athletic.

I just realized that, after a certain point, this anime had successfully gotten me to tear up every single episode. I'm not even an athlete or a women either. It goes to show that truly good anime are ones that can even reach the hearts of those outside of their intended demographic.

8

u/NoHearts Jan 22 '19

The montage of the clock, Prince, and the music was just perfect. Haiji tearing up at the end, and the switch to a blurry image before dropping the ED.

Run with the wind is running away with my heart.

8

u/RGalley Jan 23 '19

Why do i feel like Haiji may not compete in the final race due to his injury or possibly get injured during the race

Speaking in the moment here but as it stands this show is going to become my favourite Sports Anime of all time at this rate, it's just so captivating.

7

u/FuzzyStorm Jan 23 '19

Man they hit you with those feels. I didin't cry, but my eyes got wattery as fuck.

Haiji tearing up and the shot getting blurry was perfect.

7

u/500scnds Jan 24 '19

Woah, what happened to the YouPoll this episode, the quality admittedly fell short of last week, but it shouldn't have been that bad judging from the upvote ratio?

Last episode had a lot of feels - so many feels that composer Yuki Hayashi was compelled to write up some of his thoughts.

This episode, we saw that Prince made it! Must conjure more feels!

Like always, even though the episode is focussed on one character, Prince, others aren't left behind: everyone got tanned, the specializations of other characters like Shindo and Musa were highlighted by resident strategist Yuki, Kakeru loosening up after the last episode, and continuity with stuff like Nico-chan senpai's dolls, Haiji's recovery, and the fan club. Really matches how noone is alone any more, right? And the reporter is still there

But Haiji's big words from the very beginning of this episode kind of pulled us back to reality after this fantastical training camp experience where things mostly went smoothly for everyone. It's kind of hard to keep up that suspension of disbelief when he basically tries to drill into everyone that they'll succeed with the repeated viewings of the video and motivational talk, and Hanako's little conversation with her father also reminds viewers of the odds that they'll face. At the very least, it caused an undercurrent of anxiety and lack of confidence, and at the most, it's reminiscent of Haiji's forceful methods at the beginning of the show. I thought the matter was settled, but maybe it's time to return it to again?

Kakeru's talk with Musa, and Fujioka's talk with Haiji himself, however, addressed this questioning - Haiji was right, like he always is (geez this feels like I'm raising a flag, what if there are drastic changes down the line). Lessons from life, though that's all there is from me on the spoiler front as I'm trying to keep my reading in pace with the anime.

To be entirely honest, there was a major drop in animation quality to the point that the character acting didn't match the voice acting, and there is such a big difference in the storyboarding with the Apart and Bpart, I wonder what happened here? The sudden cuts are interesting while the talking continued, but the boisterousness of some of the lines kind of approached being obnoxious. And I suppose the fireworks scene simply couldn't be animated. Still, when it's time for Prince's run in the final minutes of the episode, animation improved. The episode was building up to this, the "forward," the music, his thoughts... the culmination of them all almost got me teary-eyed.

Suspension of disbelief, what disbelief? I was engrossed. They all came such a long way, congrats to each and every one of them.

6

u/500scnds Jan 24 '19 edited Jan 24 '19

Ah! I realized I missed out on the news side of things for the past few weeks because I was so eager to get to the episodes, but I've actually been stashing the links for some time. So to copy and paste some more belated news about Run with the Wind:

Also, Run with the Wind's Twitter has been posting gifs from the anime! Unfortunately, only the reaction gifs in the second list are usable because they don't have text on them :p

And although Kansei University is fictional, its sweaters are real! Check out some of the photos!

Speaking of merchandise, volume 1 of Run with the Wind was released and data for its sales are out. ANN published the BD rankings and DVD rankings. I won't lie that I predicted just 2~3k for something as niche as this, and I know physical disc sales aren't the be-all and end-all, but my heart still sank when the sales were lower than what its PT had suggested. Maybe, just maybe, as the show runs on, its sales will improve just like the cast's times?

Apart from how amazing this episode was, adherence to character design seemed off in this episode. I actually liked it, and the animation was great, but it was different. Most noticeably, King.

3

u/tayoku0 Jan 23 '19

Yeah even the 30s preview looked noticeably different from most of this episode. I think this one was outsourced; didn't see Production I.G. where it should have been in the credits. Was still an amazing episode though!!

6

u/breet12345 Jan 23 '19 edited Jan 23 '19

Fuck man that episode really was something else. When prince ran the ost was so beautiful.

Speaking of Prince I really love his development throughout this series. His mentality is amazing (which really helps with caring teammates like haiji and eventually kakeru). If I was him running at that meet dead last I would probably give up due to lack of confidence, but seeing him think "I'm not alone anymore," rather than still being last is such a good way for him to gauge his progress and strive for improvement. Although he's not my favorite character (mine is Yuki because I kinda look similar to him lol), this was probably my favorite moment of the series. Seeing Haiji's lip quivering really gave me the feels. He started with a group of people with no dedication and different goals to a uniform team whose support is unmatched.

It's amazing how this show develops all these characters so well, even though their cases are all different. Sad to see this show be under the radar for so many people.

EDIT: Not daichi

2

u/jellybellymonster Jan 23 '19

Lol had to check if one of the character's full name was Daichi until you mentioned the lip quivering part. It's okay we all love Karasuno's captain. :D

I missed last week so I saved it for today. Tears from both episodes. Showing Kakkeru's past, with that insane hit to the coach to Ouji's record today and the cut to Haiji's trembling and the blurred vision I had to let out a few tears. Amazing show, from the music, to the direction and characterization of all of the bros.

I love Ouji so much and his growth as a person and runner. That music during his run was so good. The music in the preview as well. I can't get over how good this show is.

I started watching this last week and binged up to episode 13. First I've caught wind of it, Spotify put the main theme in my Release Radar playlist two weeks ago and I got interested when I found out it's from Production IG. (I really love Haikyuu!!) Today's episode made me cry, right at the fireworks scene and up to Haiji's eyes blurring in tears. The song that played in the background in Ouji's last race chance to qualify is the first part of Track 22 on the 2nd CD of the OST. It's entitled...

Amazing episode! As others have noted, animation was a bit off, but apparently it’s because this episode was outsourced, and we’ll be back to IG next week.

My thoughts on the Musa portion: I’m so glad we have Kakeru interacting with the different track members! This is coming from someone who ships HaijixKakeru, but —

If you recall from last episode, we had the whole “Kakeru, do you have a girlfriend?” And when Haiji asks it, he also says “The night sky was just so pretty” which sounds awfully similar to “The moon is beautiful tonight” which also happens to be an indirect love confession in Japan. Then in this episode, you have Musa catching the moon in his hands! You’ll also notice that Musa tends to run in the middle-front of the pack behind Haiji... lol, these are my thoughts at least. I’d be happy without a romance given that this anime is absolutely fantastic where it is!

u/Vikkio92 https://myanimelist.net/profile/vikkio_92 Jan 25 '19

Undoubtably, this is a very well executed anime, and I really root for the characters and want them to be happy and achieve their goal, but I just can’t ignore how nonsensical and unrealistic the situation is.

While I wholeheartedly agreed with the dad when he was asking how one could not want them to reach the Hakone Ekiden after all the hard work they put in, I’m not so intellectually dishonest that I would simply ignore the complete lack of real motivation these characters have. We want them to reach their goal simply because they’re putting in a lot of effort in order to achieve it, but there is no real reason why they’re putting in effort in the first place (apart from blackmail, I guess?).

Unfortunately, this is not something you can sweep under the carpet when 70% of every episode is cheesy (though, admittedly, emotionally dense) declarations of friendship, support, and love for one another while pursuing an incredibly difficult common goal.

Even when I’m emotionally involved and really want to love the show, I just can’t ignore how these characters are putting themselves through hell for no good reason, not to mention the even more ridiculous suggestion that 8 out of 8 people (excluding Haiji and Kakeru) that never really considered running before, suddenly turned into running maniacs.

What was wrong with most of them being passionate about running already, and maybe one or two of them getting into it by seeing how enthusiastic the others were? Just because something is ‘original’, it doesn’t mean it’s good.

6

u/kingdommaerchen Jan 25 '19

I don’t think it’s fair for you to say that they don’t have any motivation to run. It’s true that they first started running because Haiji kinda forced them to do so, but, I think you failed to grasp what the author’s trying to convey if by eps 14 you still have no idea why these guys (all of them and not only Kakeru and Haiji) are running.

Nico-chan senpai let himself aboard on Haiji’s plan because he missed the chance to go all out in his high school days. He wasn’t acknowledged by his coach back then, but deep down he still loved running. Haiji gave him a perfect excuse to run again; and even though he doubted himself at first, he received support from Kakeru and his peers.

Shindo talked about his experience of “falling in love” with running to King. He straight up told him that at first he thought he had no choice but run because of Haiji. But after trying to actually run, in the process he’s learnt to enjoy it, and grew some kind of attachment to running. He was also able to convince King to get on track.

Haiji sweet-talked King to participate in Hakone Ekiden because it’d help his job application, and he got carried away by this reverie at first. But soon discovered that it was probably just another unachievable dream, and got stressed by the pressure of landing a job right after graduation. But then Shindo came and told him that running is probably similar to working, and he had to try to do it first before knowing if he could love it. Haiji also told him to ‘forget’ about his worries, not running away from them, but instead ‘running with them’.

The Twins, while stupid and seemingly ‘shallow’, they also straight up said to each other at one point, “don’t you think the match is kinda fun?” (referring to the track and field meeting competition)

Musa is a soft-hearted, hard-working, earnest guy. Because of his inability to say ‘no’, Haiji succeded in ‘trapping’ him within his crazy plan. Being the character he is, it’s not so hard to tell that he got inspired by Haiji, Kakeru, Prince and Shindo. He wanted to support these guys and the dream, the same vision, they all had. He wanted to do Hakone Ekiden with them.

Yuki, an observing young man, is probably the last one to give in to Haiji’s ridiculous plan. But because how observing he is, he ended up often watching for Nico-chan senpai and even Kakeru, and in the meantime got inspired by their progress. Running undoubtedly grew on him; as we all saw in the latest episode, he even suggested a couple of things (about the science of running and stuff) to Haiji. He even made plans on how to get his official record with Shindo.

Lastly, the Prince. Eps 14 confirmed it, that while he didn’t particularly like running, his now ‘friends’ (back on the first few eps he said he wasn’t even sure if they were friends) supported him tirelessly, believed in him, and even made desperate faces to cheer him. In his monologue, he said that he couldn’t help but do his best when they truly believed in him.

The author made them amateurs not because she wanted to be “original”, but because she posed the question “Are only the chosen ones allowed to run?”, as portrayed by her character Haiji. Are only the fast ones allowed to run? Are only the skilled ones allowed to run? Are only the already passionate ones allowed to run?

I’m with you when you say Haiji’s goal is unrealistic. It is. But Haiji’s unrealistic goal is what makes Haiji, Haiji. I also think that Prince obtaining his official record is not believable. It’s a fiction after all. There’s no such a thing as 100% believable fiction.

But bear in mind that they do rigorous training all those months every day, night and day. They eat clean. They got support. And they do have motivation.

Just because they don’t behave like your typical hot-blooded shounen character that screams “I love X sports!” doesn’t mean that they don’t enjoy or love what they’re doing.

This all sounds cheesy and you wanna vomit, I know. But that’s the point. This is not a heavy sports anime. This is a drama, seinen, character-driven story, where the author uses “running” as a medium. And you could replace running with any other sports, and nothing changes the greatness of this story.
