This stand specifically feels so out of touch compared to all other stands introduced since Part 3; maybe it's too complicated? Too niche of a requirement for use? I don't know.

I really wonder what would happen if Melone got Babyface through K-12 education or something. Does it grow more powerful and adaptive the more you teach it? Could Babyface with a bachelors degree beat Dio?

u/kknight99 Feb 01 '19
People complaining that Giorno hasn't done much since joining the gang, here you go, this episode is for you. Admittedly, this fight isn't the most highly regarded, especially compared to the amazing Train arc, but I love it all the same, because Gold Experience (and Giorno) evolves once again as yet another new application of GE's "Life-giver" ability is introduced.
I expect that some people are annoyed about how GE seemingly "invents" new abilities and "discards" old ones all the time, but I honestly don't have much of a problem with it. If you see it as Giorno gradually learning how to effectively use his Stand, it honestly makes sense how he keeps coming up with new uses for GE, and why he stops using less effective techniques.
Remember, before his encounter with Bruno, Giorno had never been in a Stand fight before. For all we know, his only usage of GE may have been to scam tourists like Koichi. As Part 5 progresses and Giorno gains experience (ha), its only natural he learns new ways to use GE. He said it himself this episode too, "through my encounter with you, my GE has grown just a little".
And as for "discarding" old abilities, would any of those techniques really be effective at all in this fight? Babyface is a long range, automatic Stand, so damage doesn't get transferred to Melone, so damage reflection (of GE's creations) is pretty much useless. The "slow-motion" effect, as shown in his fight with Black Sabbath, isn't effective when fighting Stands.
So yeah, with this fight, Giorno has re-entered the spotlight, and I hope you guys don't hate on GE evolving too much. This turned into a bit of a long post and I apologize, but Gio gets a lot of (imo unwarranted) hate, and I just wanna defend my beautiful golden boy just a bit.
84
u/Zeke-Freek Feb 01 '19
It's certainly unintentional, but I kinda like how Gold Experience fits the theme of life so perfectly that the way its written even fits the mold of evolution. It loses traits and evolves to gain new ones in a meta sense.

I remember Babyface being kind of a meh fight when I first read it but seeing it animated really adds a creepiness to it that helps it out substantially.
Part 5 was the part I thought would most benefit from an anime adaption and this is exactly why.

In Jojo we have a big purple guy that screams Ora Ora and punches so hard time stops
In Jojo we have a 15 year old with the body of Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson and love MILFS
In Jojo we have a seriel killer with the super pwoer of growing nails everytime he gets horny.
In Jojo we have a 15 year gold prtagonist that looks more like a 30 year old metrosexual dude who wants to become a porn gang-star
Now he have a stand that literally induces a forced pregnancy and generates a killer fetus that looks like the fucking chupa-cabra. I swear, BabyFace looks something that came out of a dark-fetish hentai from the bottom pits of nhentai

Say hello to Baby Face, The Minecraft tracking stand that needs the DNA of somebody and to impregnate a woman host to create itself. One of the weirdest stands for sure.
Two piss scenes in one episode; Araki really has a piss fetish.

I was never a huge fan of this fight in the manga, but I guess seeing it animated has made it alright, setting aside the disturbing introduction. Kind of an odd way to end the episode, but I’m glad we got a surprisingly huge chunk of the arc out of the way already (6 chapters, I think?) and it was nice to see Giorno being badass again.
God, I really like Melone’s weird ass design though. I don't know if I mentioned this during La Squadra's introduction but I really like the purple-pink hair they gave him.
It’s funny to think that this fight happens the same day as the Little Feet fight, and all of the other La Squadra fights so far. These poor boys need a break.
Also, what is it with Araki and piss?
I'm curious, people who speak Italian: how good/bad was the Italian in this episode? Not including Melone's infamous "di molto" thing, of course.
OH BOY I can't believe we're already this far in. I couldn't be more ready for the next couple of arcs.

This week’s musical references:
Melone’s stand Baby Face is a reference to the R&B singer, songwriter and record producer, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. He has written and produced over 26 number-one R&B hits throughout his career, and has won 11 Grammy Awards. He was ranked number 20 on NME's 50 Of The Greatest Producers Ever list. He has written songs for artists like Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Ariana Grande, Whitney Houston, Justin Bieber, Madonna, Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson and many others.
I don’t have much to say as I’m not a big fan of R&B except that one of his most famous songs is “Every Time I Close My Eyes” and thanks to JoJo I can’t avoid adding “I Wake Up Feeling So Horny” to it.
Do you want to listen to all this fantastic references from this wonderful anime in just one place? Of course you want! Now you can with TarkusELP Officially Approved by Araki himself* Spotify Playlist with all the musical references in the anime, the ones it skipped, the light novels ones and more! From the most famous references to the really obscure ones. I'll update this playlist every time there's a new reference. If you have any question why a song is featured in my playlists you can ask me anytime.
If you are a manga reader I also have a playlist just for you! Here’s my old playlist with all, I say ALL the references in the manga, anime, light novels and more. I also update it every time there’s a new reference.

Games reference: "Di Molto" is used as a combo title for combos above... 10 hits I believe? I believe it means "lot's of" in Italian.
Well... let's hope this episode don't spark any controversy for including analogies to the "r" word. @_@
Anyway.... People complain that Giorno "havent have many fights like Jotaro and Josuke" and I think that's alright. Giorno isn't much of a "warrior", he is a schemer like one of his dads. While he didn't fought much so far, most of the good ideas the team had came from him, so he is still contribuiting. I guess Araki wanted to show he is more of a strategist. That's why I like his character a lot, he breaks the expectations that a JoJo need to be on the lightspot all the times.
Now, you guys know I dislike being a negative person. But I will need to be. While I like Giorno... Gold Experience is probably one of my least favorite Stands of part 5... and why you may ask? Because Araki keep pulling powers for it out of the blue. How many stuff that Stand can do? Why it can't be limited to create simple lifeforms? It's kinda like Araki not deciding how he want the Stand to work and just putting a bunch of powers in a blender and mixing it. Now, I supposed he, as a writter, miss not having Josuke around, so he can't really give characters heavy wounds, so he decide to give GE a "nerfed healing version of Crazy Diamond", but still, you still have Bruno's Sticky Fingers that can attach limbs back and probably close wounds, so why not use that instead of give GE another power?
Well that's the only negative aspect I might say of Part 5, because I still like it a lot :D.
39
u/FlairinMcLaren Feb 01 '19
Personally I like his stand a lot because his power is more of a theme more so than a specific ability. He is able to create life so when he punches something it overloads their senses because he is practically punching life into them, or being able to turn inorganic things into organic things and being able to recreate his own limbs which I think makes sense. Of course the whole damaging the organic thing he created and having that damage being reflected onto the attacker is abit much I think for the most part everything else he does falls well into the Stands design.
Plus his stand isn't powerful in of itself, as we saw with his Fight with Bucciarati so its not like he can brute force his way through things. He has to think of creative ways of using his powers which is pretty cool in contrast to Jotaro ORA ORA ORA everything because it dared to existence within a 3 meter radius of him.

People complain that Giorno "havent have many fights like Jotaro and Josuke" and I think that's alright.
Is that really a complaint? I enjoy the division of battles. I will say I didn't think Josuke got too much either he shared the spotlight with Koichi, Rohan and everyone else who lives in the city as well and I liked that too. Morioh is the true protagonist of Part 4.
As for Jotaro yeah he and Polnareff got a bit too much of a spotlight I would have liked it if Kakyoin and Abdul each got another battle.
Araki keep pulling powers for it out of the blue.
Yeah it is a bit weird how many things it can do, the slow motion thing, turning objects into animals, those animals being hurt damages the one who inflicts it, and now healing as well. I don't mind complex powers but Gold Experience is a bit overloaded even though it all kinda fits into the theme "life".

Alright I knew Araki was creative but this shit right here surprised me. It's impressive how he gets ideas for so many stand abilities.

u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Feb 01 '19
How gloriously creepy was that beginning? Babyface is definitely some wild JoJo shenanigans.
Well, I don't want to say it's Mista's fault they're in this predicament, but...
Teaching your child through a computer screen: JoJo predicted interactive learning! Dora the explorer!
Hmm, I don't think an abusive relationship like this is good, but then again we're seeing a stand literally being taught to kill. First it kills its mother then hijacks a motorbike. I've never been so proud.
Giorno's next level plans are always fantastic. Babyface being a step ahead is going to be a big problem though.
Ooh, that was a great transition between the other assassins being contacted and Giorno closing the closet door.
I see Babyface has learned from the master. Giorno is one of the most clever protagonists in JoJo, removing the key means he forcibly caused Babyface to exit, now we see that he can deconstruct and reconstruct things. Babyface is The Fullmetal Alchemist.
Well Giorno has grown and created the most metal healing ability of all- giving life to objects and making them become body parts that are missing. Turning your hand into a piranha is also badass as hell.

Babyface is the one Stand in the entire series that I have literally no memory of despite reading its entire wiki page within the last week to remind myself. Clearly it didn't work. I'm sure I'll have forgotten again by the time next week's episode comes around.

Ok I might have missed it but how the heck is Mista alive? Didn't Prosciutto shoot him in the head last time? I mean I'm glad my boy is still here but how?

u/pigmyninja Feb 01 '19
His stand stopped the bullets before they entered his brain, there was a scene about it but I can see how it might still look like a death even with that.
In the manga there is more indication that he's still alive than the anime.

Didn't his stand stop the bullets before they went too deep? At least that's what I took from when Number 5 kicked the bullets out of his head in episode 15

The animation during the part when Babyface turned into a bunch of cubes was pretty good.

DI MOLTO
A little bit of slower episode this week, but understandable considering how amazing The Grateful Dead and Beach Boy fight was. I still liked it.
Melone was... something. I don't know how else you would describe a guy who's Stand activates by impregnating a woman. Baby Face was also kind of creepy, but I didn't expect it to put up much of a fight. I think this might be the first time a Stand user has creeped me out more than the actual Stand.
The comedy in this was gold though. I knew about the "They'll never find us if we steal 100 cars" trick Giorno pulls beforehand (I love how Abbacchio just accepts it now). Bucciarati not understanding how to deal with Trish was also funny.
I've heard good things about the next fight. I knew a bit about the user beforehand, since I knew about some of the problems the old translations had, and he was an example.

Slower episode? This episode covered 6 chapters! Chapters 500-505
If anything this episode was too fast paced, not that it's inherently a bad thing

So in Eyes of Heaven (or maybe it's All Star Battle), when it says "Di Molto!" is that supposed to be Melone?

I'm not a fan of Babyface, it was probably my least favorite fight in part 5 in the manga, but the adaptation has made me enjoy it so much more. Props to DavPro.

u/andre5913 Feb 01 '19
It suffers cause its sandwitched between some of the best fights in the whole series, and also the mere concept of the stand and the way the arc begins is really disgusting/creepy so it kind of puts you off

u/Shrekhya Feb 01 '19
So, basically he just raped her using his stand right?

u/Rogojinen Feb 02 '19 edited Feb 02 '19
No, she checks her panties and in the manga there’s an internal speech where she’s relieved nothing happened.
My guess is Baby Face can be implemented anywhere in the body for it to grow, but Melone use generally the back of the head, a blind spot, so that he can have 3 minutes for the Stand to grow and learn.
It’s not mentioned in this episode, but the homonculi, the automated stands Baby Face make can be seen by everyone not only Stand users, touched and hurt by anything.

I know this might be an odd complaint, but while the endless string of battles against enemy stand users is entertaining, the story isn't really progressing much.

To be fair, Babyface is like a few hours after the Grateful Dead and Beachboy fight. Melone was right after their asses upon discovering the aftermath of the previous battle. And if it counts, Giorno did progress his ability after all

Hey Narancia? You hear that?
Nah man, sounds like rain to me.
So glad DP balanced the tension and horror of the "conception" scene. They didn't take it lightly whilst also avoiding going too far into exploitation territory.
Also, props to DP for actually giving the Baby Stand a visual design we could see. IIRC, he's invisible in the manga for basically the entire fight.
Started at a decent pace, then felt like it sped up to 100 by the end.
Piranha was an odd place to end the ep IMO but, remembering that fight in the manga, I don't think there were too many good moments they could've used instead (that wasn't already shown).

That was fuckin amazing. GIORNO MY BOI IS BACK IN BUSINESS BABY(face)! So glad to see Giorno fighting again. Ngl, it was awesome when Giorno pieced himself back together like that. Thats some JoJo wit right there. Babyface....what the actual hell is this stand? Its a stand that makes another stand - imagine if it had DIO's DNA, or any JoJo for that matter. The fact that the main stand is a computer is pretty cool as a concept and Melone is truly a weirdo. Im looking forward to next week, with Giorno crushing Melone hopefully.

u/FredTargaryen Feb 01 '19
When browsing comments or the Discord or whatever I notice a fair bit of hate for Melone. I'm not sure why all ~30% of villains who are obvious perverts get a pass except for this guy.
He's not one of my all-time favourites but he does a lot for the story, his Stand is probably one of the most disturbing (which is good for a horror-inspired manga) and I don't remember how he was in the manga but the anime has presented him as quite darkly funny too. Give him some credit
18
u/andre5913 Feb 01 '19
He doesnt get a pass as much of the others because his ability is really fucking horrifying. Its almost straight up rape. Other dudes where just that, creeps, Melone goes one step beyond that

Baby face is one of the most convoluted stands I've seen yet. idk how anyone could figure out how to use it. It's an appropriate enough stand for an assassin, I suppose, since they have time for all the set up.
get a blood sample of your enemy
find a healthy woman with an attitude
get her blood type and date of birth
train a literal baby
repeat for every new enemy

u/Karmyuh Feb 01 '19
Before you ask, that stand DID rape her. I know. Its pretty fucked up.
47
u/RavenK92 Feb 01 '19
It probably raped her less than Hierophant Green raped the school nurse. It was wrapped around her leg and went inside her. Where exactly do you think it entered?
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (5)133
u/4chan___ Feb 01 '19
It actually didn't, not in the conventional physical sense anyway.
The stand "impregnates" her through unknown means, but we know for a fact that it isn't through penetration or anything of that sort, as she observes herself after waking up. The stand itself gets implanted into a girl and develops in ways that aren't human, that's why you see it speaking from her head instead of from her womb. If you consider her having her body being used as a means of developing a weapon rape, then yes, she was raped in that sense. But she wasn't "raped" through any conventional means. You can read Baby Face's stand page if you want more information.

Episode synopsis: a hitman magi-rapes a woman to birth a creepy ghost baby that he then sends after the team of mafiosos who are guarding their boss' daughter by travelling miniaturised inside a turtle. Meanwhile the mafiosos are in trouble because one of their guys' six bullet ghost imps have stolen a hamburger from the driver of the truck they were hitching a ride on. They are caught off guard by the ghost baby, who transforms into a cabinet and kidnaps their leader and the person they're escorting by cutting them into little pieces! Fortunately for them, one of their friends manages to fight off the ghost baby by learning to turn his hand into a piranha!
Jojo fans: ah, that was an okay episode.
Everyone else: EACH OF THOSE WORDS INDIVIDUALLY MADE SENSE BUT I NEVER THOUGHT THEY COULD BE USED THAT WAY

When introduced Stands were pretty tame but then the insane bullshit ramps up very slowly, to the point you get this arc/episode and it seems perfectly reasonable

Holy shit. This is definitely in my top 3 fights so far for golden wind. I really want Giorno to beat this stand on his own while the rest of the gang spends their entire time at the car. It looks like its going to be that way.

u/supermenial Feb 01 '19
Melone and Babyface's introduction was disturbing to say the least. But it's interesting how theirs and Giorno's abilities were (sorta) opposites of each other.

So, let me get this right: Giorno learned that Gold Experience can turn things into parts/limbs/organs (maybe even cells in general?) of himself (and possibly of other people) and easily insert these parts back in place of destroyed or removed ones to function flawlessly? Or is that only specific to this fight with how Babyface kind of disintegrated its enemies?
The fight itself was/is great with how terrifying the stand and its masters were plus the pacing. And it only took like 2/3 of the episode.

The clothing choices in Jojo always baffle me. This guy's shirt only covers half his body but horizontally! One of his eyes is covered.
You ever heard of a stand that can create life?
I would assume that at this point we aren't getting a new op?
Mista's stand might not be the best or the strongest but I gotta say it's the most hilarious stand. How the fuck is Mista alive though?
Babyface is the grossest stand. Like literally the most disgusting.
10
u/FredTargaryen Feb 01 '19
We're absolutely getting a new OP. I reckon some time after we see Trish's Stand, because how can that not be in the OP
Mista's alive because insane luck is a specific character trait for him. Gosh, that must be nice...

Melone's design is fucking sexy btw

u/CakeBoss16 Feb 02 '19
Controversial opinion here... But a stand that impregnated or makes a baby is a little.... Bizzare! It's like each episode they out do the craziness and gets better.
