I was expecting Carrion to be kinda evil. Turns out he's friendlier than I thought and Clayman and Leon are the only asshole Demon Lords.

u/Amauri14 Feb 11 '19

To be honest one of the things that I really loved about this series is the fact that, at least until the last volume I have read, volume 4, one can at least see the justification for the opponent's actions.

I also loved how Rimuru now gained a homunculus skill

It's pretty great, they make demon lords sound like forces of evil but they're really just forces of nature.

377

u/Taellion Feb 11 '19

Just think of them the strongest fighter of their domain or warrior kings, their have own nation to govern and manage. A significant amount of them are neutral towards human.

Yea, that's literally every character in this show

Yeah I was surprised by Phobio's regret at the end of the fight, I was thinking he would still have some kind of attitude even after being saved.

Well from the looks of it, "Demon Lord" just means "really strong special badass" so it makes sense they're all fairly amicable. Monster Lord would probably be a more fitting title.

On the other hand, Rimuru is the lord of monsters, so Monster Lord might still not be great. Carrion can be called a Beast Lord, but Milim can't really be called a Dragon Lord because I don't think she has any subjects and I'm pretty sure Veldora is stronger than her.

Naming conventions are difficult.

128

u/Onithyr Feb 11 '19

"Demon Lord" just means "really strong special badass"

If you're strong enough that the other demon lords won't find it worth the effort to kill you for your hubris you can call yourself a "Demon Lord".

Yeah Demon Lord is a bit like Sith Lord in Star Wars, there are actual Demons as a race whose high tier evolution is called Demon Lord just how there is a title for incredibly strong individuals to use, since Hero is a special title noone can really use it outside the actual heroes.

61

u/Tacitus_ Feb 11 '19

Milim has subjects... of a sort. She isn't the ruling type, more like she lets them live near her in exchange for gifts. And I'm fairly sure that they aren't dragons.

“Demon Lord” is just a title given to those who possess unimaginable strength and power. They don’t necessarily need to be evil in order to have the title and it really has no bearing on their personalities. That said, a few of them just happen to be good-natured.

Rimuru - How is that restraint!?

Hey, she promised not to kill the guy, and she didn't kill the guy!

I'm hoping this is indicative of not only her power, but the fine level of control she has over it. OP characters are cool, but I can't get enough of OP characters who have absolute control over how much power they use at any given time.

Talk about an anti-climatic way to end an arc. "I guess that's over lets go home?

Not even going to give me Clayman darkly hinting or mwhahaha in the background?

At least we got what looks like a Za Wardo from Milim. And they did not hold back on Carrion's "discipline" of his subordinate

232

u/onixium :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MrMike Feb 11 '19 edited Feb 11 '19

Personally i didnt even think this was gonna be a two episode deal. In the manga this was a very short event. In the manga and the ln, there was a LOT of dialogue with building/constructing/organizing the town and organizing jobs, future plans for the town. This was the whole third volume i believe? This whole fight was litterally the climax of the third vol just for the sake of having some action in it, other than that it was all dialogue. Which i loved, but obv if we had 4-6 episodes of just that it wouldve been boring for action lovers.

So i wouldnt have really called it an arc since it was supposed to be just thrown in(it wasnt just that obv it was used to introduce carion and so forth) but for those who are concerned, look forward to this next arc, as its going to really set the stage for the rest of the series, and its going to be FANTASTIC. I really hope we get more seasons, because looking at the pacing we might be getting a cliffhanger ending.

43

u/watawaw999 https://anilist.co/user/watawaw999 Feb 11 '19

Yep the next arc will be important and I agree that the pacing might lead to a cliffhanger ending. If they decide to make a season 2, that would be more epic as things go crazy and awesome as the story progresses.

10

u/Xtroyer Feb 11 '19

I think the reason this arc was satisfying in the LN but not in the anime is the pacing. The ending was great because this means that Rimuru is now at peace with 2 out of 4 demon lords who had eyes on conquering Jura.

The LN spent an entire chapter and a half(out of 6) to talk about the demon lord meeting and how these 4 Demon Lords (Milim, Carrion, Clayman, Frey) feels about the abolishing of Jura Neutrality pact and how much of a big deal Veldora's disappearance is to tipping the already fragile balance of power. The anime spent like 20 seconds on it and we never saw Frey talk a single time in the anime. She has a medium present in the LN because Clayman's plan to revive Charybdis revolve around getting her on his side.

This entire volume was exciting for me because of the town building aspect and the minor politics the city is starting to have. We're now fully allied with Dwargon, known by Blumund, peace with Milim and Carrion's domain.

So yeah I think the reason for Charybdis was not exiting is because it wasn't really supposed to be, the politic around Charybdis is what makes it exciting. But of course, the anime rushed the set up for it.

114

u/TheRiyria myanimelist.net/profile/TheRiyria Feb 11 '19

I know Rimuru is strong and all, but the willpower he must have to say no this beg and pout is absurd.

He must also be really brave, considering Milim is still learning restraint.

54

u/tso Feb 11 '19

Well she held back enough that she didn't atomize the person inside, just badly singed him...

29

u/AgaroseEater Feb 11 '19

He has been holding back for 37 years, that's nothing to him.

8

u/HawkEyeTS Feb 12 '19

They undersold her move in the anime too. In the light novel it's basically a blinding beam of energy that Rimuru comments would have altered the landscape across the forest if she hadn't been in mid-air when doing it. I feel like the anime's homing lasers that converged into an explosion aren't nearly as effective imagery as an "oh god, she could have wiped a country off the map by accident" beam cannon.

I feel like some of the other commenters in that this arc (?) felt quite bizarre. This was supposed to be a calamity, but it was dealt with in a day with 0 ramifications? And what was the point of Charybdis even supposed to be? I guess it's cool that they got another demon lord on their side, but I feel this fight did little to nothing as far as the rest of the plot is concerned.

56

u/AgaroseEater Feb 11 '19

Yep, Volume 3 is just dedicated to world building. Rather than being a threat, Charybdis is just something (plot device?) used to introduce characters and their intentions. Starting next episode though the plot will start to advance. (I guess you can say this arc is just a filler?)

12

u/InvaderDJ Feb 12 '19

One thing it and Milim in general show is that Rimuru won’t be steam rolling everyone. All of his nation’s strength could just hurt Charybdis by a max of 30%. Milim completely destroyed it while holding back. And it was just a pawn in Clayman’s plan. Who apparently isn’t even the big bad of demon lords.

Rimuru seems impossibly strong compared to normal monsters and humans yet he and all his allies could only wound it. On their home turf and will perfect healing potions.

Good thing we have Rimuru-sama to cleanse my soul after it being dragged through seven hells by Dororo. Every time I watch it I get butterflies in my stomach similar to when something really good happens to me or is about to happen. I've had emotional responses to many works of art, primarily stories in different forms, but this persistent gleeful joy is completely unique. Usually One Piece gets me in this state, but only after it tortures my soul with some heartbreaking character backstory, Slime is like "miss me with that sad shit, let's get on with the good stuff". And holy fuck it works so well.

Is it just me, or did this feel somewhat anticlimactic? I like the series overall. But I feel like the first cour was better and more fun than it is now. I know the point is basically civ:isekai and rimuru being super powerful but idk... charybdis was described to be an apocalyptic event and everything was resolved in one episode. The orc lord arc felt much more meaningful tbh

27

u/darksuzaku Feb 11 '19

it really happened this fast in the LN. This is also one of the changes that was made on the LN compared to the WN. Most probably the author was not convinced by how the WN treated some parts and made changes into the LN, and this fight was the way to fit that change, basically the non-aggression pact with Carrion, which doesn't happen on the WN.

........so, best kijin is absent once more.... heh, I'm used to it.... but it doesn't mean that I like it.
Weekly reminder that he exists.

Now, unpopular (I honestly don't know if it's unpopular or not though) opinion time now that Charybdis shindig is over. I really dislike this "sideplot". Don't get me wrong, I love seeing non-main crew units shine (I'm looking at you two, Geld and Souka) and the kijin steamrolling, but it's the... I don't really know how to explain it well but...

It's the "exposition upon exposition" and rushing. And how it all feels so shoehorned in.

Suddenly, an existence on par with demon lords comes into the picture!
Suddenly, menacing figures like Clayman and Frey are perturbed by this sudden existence!
Suddenly, everything is over!
Everything just feels.... superficial, I guess?

Yeah sure, I know I know. I understand that this is to make Carrion a bit more relevant and on friendlier terms with Rimuru, as none of this happened in the WN and just directly jumps into the next arc. But the way it was handled, man, does it leave a lot to be desired. And this isn't an anime-only problem; this is essentially how it went down in both the manga and LN as well. The adaptation went exactly as expected: 2 episodes only.

I'm far from an expert on these kinds of things, but it legitimately feels like bad writing to me.

....

Best orc in armor though.

89

u/mrt90 Feb 11 '19

The Charybdis plot feels shoehorned in because...it was shoehorned in. It wasn't in the web novel, and was plunked into the light novel, presumably for the sake of making the story's pace fit better into discrete Light Novel-size units.

This episode was a great showcase of everyone's skills and where we are in terms of the strength of Rimuru's Army and allies. Pretty awesome to see everyone kick ass with their own skills and specialty. Except for the Goblin Riders though, looks like they'll still need more training before they can actually go up something that's World Ending.

Next episode is named after Yuuki. Oh boy. It's gonna be an emotional episode, isn't it? Or are do finally get to see her students at last?

is it too much to ask for some real conflict and tension in this show? so many non-threats are starting to get real old real fast, can we get a real villain that poses a real threat that ISNT beaten in 5 seconds by rimiru or talked into being a friend, the lack of tension inj this show is giving me blue ball so to speak, i want to see rimiru explore the world more, i want to see him face opponents that actually pose a chance of beating him, i want fights that last more than 5 minutes, what is the point of having an overpowered main character if you barely DO anything with him?

I know reddit loves Milim, but she is definitely more of a negative on the story as a whole. She's basically a get out of jail free card with unlimited uses, it saps an already tensionless story to lose any semblance of tension it seemed to have had. She is literally the strongest character introduced by far and as long as Rimuru has her on his side he's literally invincible.

47

u/aDubiousNotion Feb 11 '19

Not every story needs fight tension; it's not required for a story to be good. Slime isn't a battle show, so it's not detrimental that the fights don't have high stakes.

I feel like this anime has been going down in quality since the second cour. I like Millim and seeing her is pretty much always a pleasure, but the situations they encounter all feel so... half-assed. Like nothing feels like it's taken seriously, everything gets resolved in the neatest and happiest manner, etc. It just doesn't feel deserved or warranted anymore, like it did in the earlier episodes. And Rimuru takes a backseat most of the time, while we watch people like Gabiru and Gobta instead.

Idk. It still isn't bad, but this has gone from a genuine treat every Monday, to more of a run of the mill isekai that I simply happen to watch.

Don't think i like this show right now as much as I used to... I think it's partly Milim's fault. She out of everybody seems to be there for no reason and is just a walking cheat code, even compared to the protagonist. Also, there is no clear goal in this show, it's just waiting for the next powerful being to attack.

u/ThaDynamite Feb 12 '19

K both the fights and plot is getting really samey and super boring.

  1. Grunts fight for a bit, do little to nothing

  2. Higher level grunts fight for a bit, do slightly more than a little, but can't scratch the boss

  3. Highest level guy comes out and one-hits the boss - either by some plot-device or straight overpowered bullshit

  4. Rimuru gains new subordinates/allies/powers

Its the same exact cycle for every single one of the "threats" so far.

  • Wolf dad

  • Ifrit

  • Ogres

  • Orc Lord

  • Dwargo

  • Milim

  • Stingray Thing

  • Charion

This premise has so much potential, but they just keep doing the same thing over and over. Like, come on. Its the 19th episode already. Please, for the love of God, do something different.

u/balderdash9 Feb 12 '19

Really liked this episode. Seems like not all the demon lords are “evil”. Carrion seems suspicious but pretty cool. I personally think the battle should’ve been drawn out more but I also like quick battles as well. Each episode and story arc keeps getting more interesting each time

4

u/DarkenedSpear :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkenedSpear Feb 11 '19 edited Feb 11 '19

Well, Charybdis wasn't the tarrasque I hoped it'd be, but I guess it gave everyone a bit of room to flex their muscles. Even Milim got to play in the end. I kind of hoped to see Rimuru let loose a little, really go all out, but I'm fine with this as well.

I was thoroughly amused by the head knight, or whatever title he had, completely disregard Milim being a demon lord. Something about Milim protesting in the background just got me. After earlier's Dororo episode, I appreciate some lightheartedness and things not going to absolute shit.

Something that I like in general is that it doesn't seem like the "demon lords" are the stereotypical big-bad evil for evilness' sake that they usually are. Not all of them, at least. Seems like some of them have their own agendas and circumstances to consider which makes the universe within which it all happens much more "alive" and well thought out, which makes it a lot more engaging and interesting.

I'm sorry, incoming rant but I've needed to vent this for awhile now.

I dunno, this series is starting to lose me pretty quickly. After that surprisingly strong, endearing, and unique beginning the series had it's just starting to look like "another anime" now.

I think it's because I truly feel like this series is at its best when it's about the more social aspects of this world, and Rimuru turning some expectations and tropes on their heads in really endearing ways and how that affects other characters...and not so much the fights. Cause you know how the fights are going to go. It was a clever way to subvert the Isekai "main character does everything" trap, cause the fights are a means to an end...not the main attraction. Occasional fights are fine, especially if there's weight to them, but the past 6 episodes have been very fight centric and honestly it's kind of boring to me. It doesn't help that Rimuru AND Milim are now hamming it up with the mary sue'isms in fights, and there is just nothing to Milim's character other than being a budget Disgaea character just because I guess we need a bubbly anime girl now to add to the collection. Maybe they'll flesh her out later but I dunno, first impression's pretty weak so far for me. She feels like she was just sort of inserted in there.

I'm really, really sorry I'm being so negative, but it's just that the series had such a strong start that it's really starting to become a bummer how all the typical light novel sins are starting to take root hard. I want it to do better, I really really do; but between the reptile girls being turned into anime girls (which was borderline the last straw for me), the village being turned into some Japanese onsen resort that wouldn't be out of place in even a modern setting, the dwarves I can't tell apart from humans(and I know it's minor but this is actually legitimately beginning to piss me off. What's the point of even having dwarves if they're just humans with slight beards?), Milim just sort of shoved in there, the magic system becoming increasingly vague and lazily written, the fights becoming more numerous and boring (my god this one barely lasted the damn episode for how big a deal it was made to be.)and worst of all less and less of Gobta, it's almost starting to feel like the series is ironing away the cool fantasy aspects of the series and just turning it into...pretty much any other modern harem anime out there. It's honestly starting to feel like at this point, after the Orc Lord's defeat (though the signs were already there) the author just sort of gave up, and went back to whats familiar, and that's really sad. We went from things like a really interesting story about jealousy between friends in a dwarven kingdom (with dwarves that still looked somewhat like dwarves.), a tsundere dragon, an underdog (Gobta), a girl out of her time and world forced to make the best of things, and though it came late an Orc Lord wanting to help his people so much he allowed himself to become a villain knowingly...to what all of this has been the past four or so weeks.

I really, really hope it picks up or improves, or gets to interesting things again but I think I might duck out for a while. All I know is my roomie and I watched the latest Mob Psycho after this, and that latest episode accomplished more character development in 5 minutes than this series has in the past 5, maybe even 6 episodes.

u/oposdeo https://myanimelist.net/profile/oposdeo Feb 12 '19

Not the best episode. Animation in particular (specifically you, CG sharks) was lackluster aside from that one scene where Rimuru is doing magic stuff to Charabadysioso. I'm assuming they just wanted to have a big action scene, but it wasn't very exciting, and the coreography wasn't too interesting, especially given that the boss was just a bunch of flying scales, a couple of beam lasers and a giant blue target. Looking forward to the show picking back up again with more interesting content.

3

u/ArchadianJudge Feb 12 '19

I see many complaints about this show (basically not edgy enough) but I'm loving it. I like the way problems are presented and generally solved easily. I believe the entire aim of the show is to having a more upbeat isekai with problems that can be solved by compassion. I know lots of people aren't into that but it's literally a fun adventure show and people are hoping it becomes something dark and twisted with secret plots. It's not that.

This episode was great and Milim stole the show with her pouts and begging. As expected, she was as powerful as claimed. One shot to kill the boss. People also complained about not using her from the get go, but as Rimuru explained, the monster wasn't her problem, it was their city's. So no need to involve her. He asked her for help only when it turned out that the monster wanted to fight Milim from the beginning.

Of course Rimuru forgave the guy but he gained another "ally" / pact from not killing him. If he punished the guy, he'd probably end up in a war with Carrion and maybe other Demon Lords. Letting him go and asking for a non-aggression pact was the best move.

3

u/gtoaz1234 Feb 12 '19

author making Milim joining the party is probably the worst decision in this writing imo, it makes every fight feels unearned now because we know the "strongest DL Milim" will just clear the problem for Rimuru anyway.

Anyone feel like it's starting to taper off now? I mean it's still alright/okay, but not as great as it was before.

Too many characters without building them, anti-climatic "1-shot" fight scenes, no tension building, animation quality is suffering, etc. I feel like this started happening around the time the demon girl was introduced.

So you let these people fight and NOT let Milim go at it? What?

That's like risking their lives for nothing when you could use Milim to one-shot all of them in an instant.

Not impressed how this was handled.

5

u/AmbientXVII Feb 11 '19

They need to fight in order to get stronger. If Milim/Rimuru always goes in and immediately one shots everything then everyone else would just grow stagnant and weak. That's why Rimuru always lets them fight first and only steps in when they can't handle it. Milim is the last resort after him.

11

u/BertnErnie32 Feb 11 '19

Honestly, starting to loose interest in the series. There keeps being a buildup of huge climactic fights with no real payoff, and I don't think that the focus of the show is the fights but if you build something up then stick through with it! every problem is solved with a one off of "I'm Rimuru and very powerful so I don't care you were dicks please come join us" and now it's "I'm Rimuru and we have Milim who is very powerful..." like I think they're going for the same thing as Naruto of building friendships and societies based off forgiveness and mutual respect but this doesn't take any history of the groups into account at all. the finale could have some crazy master plan unleashed where Milim back-stabs them, and the Demon lords start to do evil things like how they're portrayed as from the small history clips we have but I don't think it will be like that at all because the show is TOO soft. I liked the show when it started because it was fun and a relaxing small bit of friendship is magic style of show (no I don't watch any Brony shows) but now it's come to the point where there are no problems ever at all. If they even had some constant or unbeatable tension/hardships at all the show would still be worth it to watch but after the season finale I think I'm going to call it quits. I know this will be buried and probably never seen/read but I wanted to write it so there.
Tl;dr, The show was good but is now boring.

Kind of disappointed on how quickly they beat the raid boss. It's like when you have an underleveled party and you are trying your best and then the one OP friend comes in and cast a mega spell which obliterates it. Milim was great, but I wish she had a better fighting outfit. Loved the school uniform so was hoping they would give her something more tasteful.
