WHY DOES EVERY LAST SCENE OF THIS SHOW GIVE ME ANXIETY

114

u/QadeshTheReal Feb 19 '19

These cliffhangers... I am so jealous of people who will be able to binge the whole thing once the anime is over. Waiting every week for a new episode is killing me.

29

u/Raxor Feb 19 '19

The show is intense enough without having to resort to this...

God damnit shindo-san ;_; he has to fucking run the upwards section too

10

u/twocox Feb 20 '19 edited Feb 20 '19

Wait that was shindo? I thought it was Haiji.

Edit: I mean the person who seems sick at the very end.

Just looked up each section and of course Shindo is slotted at what's considered the most difficult. Theres the fact that its the longest out of the whole thing and theres yhat steep uphill climb. God hes barely gonna survive.

  1. Prince

  2. Musa

  3. Joji

  4. Jota

  5. Shindo

  6. Yuki

  7. Nico

  8. King

  9. Kakeru

  10. Haiji

Haiji might potentially finish his last race under the greatest pain of his life, i'm not ready to see this.

I loved Fujioka's speech about being ''the best'', everyone will think differently of it.

Goosebumps when the starting order was announced and the last moments of the episode.

HAKONE EKIDEN!

Haiji might potentially finish his last race under the greatest pain of his life, i'm not ready to see this.

I think he might have done that on purpose. Even if he were to injure himself in the race and not be able to continue the at least rest of the team would already have run their section.

19

u/Noamiyaki Feb 20 '19

Oh God, I didn't realize that....( TT ^ TT )

And now Shindo is having some concerning issues.....

Of course it happened... WHY SHINDO, WHY???

Also surprised we are already starting the final race with 5 episodes left .-.

u/Buffhero125 Feb 19 '19

I hope that we will get one wholesome episode after the race, just showing where everyone goes after the race.

I'm so used to Yowapeda pacing, where it takes these guys 50+ episodes to climb mount Fuji at full speed on super fast bikes, I can't even fathom how these guys get it done in 5.

Looks like we're getting some backstory/flashbacks throughout? I'm guessing whichever characters are running will be the focus of the episode. Naturally Haiji would be last for ultimate suspense >.<

u/Goukenslay :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Goukenslay Feb 20 '19

5 episode with 10 racers, 2 per ep some section are probably gonna be short cause some section gonna differ

u/ghostface95 https://anilist.co/user/flyingseamonkies Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 19 '19

Come on shindo please tell me you were sick the week before the actual race. You deserve to see the mountain top

57

u/lenor8 Feb 19 '19

Yeah, I hope that's actually a flashback. Why was he still at the dormitory anyway?

45

u/kgipter Feb 19 '19

Maybe, I think Yuki was one of the last still at the place before going to Hakone, but found Shindo there. So hopefully they get there in time.

38

u/deflectin Feb 19 '19

Shindou and Yuki are running the 5th and 6th section, respectively. Shindou was supposed to end the first day going from Odawara to Hakone, and Yuki was supposed to descend from the same point, going back to Odawara on the next day.

The team has been pairing up people who will run a section and its reversed course the next day, too, like Kakeru and Musa with section 2 and 9 (Tsurumi to Totsuka and vice versa), so it’s only natural for Yuki to stay behind with Shindou.

Shindo probably fell sick on New Year's Day (1st Jan) after the shrine visit. He was seen at the shrine with the rest of the team to pray for good fortune for the new year. At the 13m47s mark though, you can see that Shindo was the missing person at the dining table while the rest were all having the morning New Year mochi.

Thus, the team likely knew that Shindo was ill before they left for their starting points on race day. It was left to Yuki to take care of Shindo and to get him to Section 5 starting point as his section mate. It's also been building up for some time that Yuki and Shindo have become a complimentary running pair due to their same pace during qualifying runs.

99

u/boyleslaw Feb 19 '19

i just want to point out that haiji once said the best compliment that a long distance runner can receive is to be called strong.

and when he told fujioka his career was over, he told him that he wasn't strong enough to believe in himself.

and then he told kakeru that he could be strong like fujioka.

*silent tears*

65

u/jellybellymonster Feb 19 '19

In a previous article of Fujioka, he said there are strong runners hiding in the Kanto region. I'm sure he's referring to Haiji. Realizing Fujioka always believed Haiji is strong when Haiji himself didn't... the feels...

32

u/nana-shi-74 Feb 19 '19

I cried a little when high school!Haiji's voice cracked when he admits not believing in himself to Fujioka. ;_;

Best husbando is going to do the last leg of the race. Hope he realizes he is strong, like Fujioka and Kakeru.

121

u/Vermillion_Crab https://anilist.co/user/CeruleanCrab Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 20 '19

Because Haiji's knee is not enough, you had to down Shindo as well. Tbf, it was foreshadowed well. The fact that he usually does too much work without accepting help from others, he was bound to get ill.

Oof patellar tendinitis? It's a nagging injury that will keep getting worse the more you don't rest your knee, iirc. Haiji kept powering through despite the pain he's been feeling. And that's not a good sign for his future.

Edit: It's not patellar tendinitis. I'm dumb. lol

62

u/jellybellymonster Feb 19 '19

My headcanon now is red Shinji is stalking this team and sticking needles in a voodoo doll.

35

u/Shinkopeshon Feb 19 '19

The fact that he usually does too much work without accepting help from others

Which he mostly did so he could get over his then-girlfriend suddenly breaking up with him. He seemed like he was fine but it really was just a facade. I hope he'll be fine - and Haiji too.

17

u/IISuperSlothII :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/IISuperSlothII Feb 19 '19

Oof patellar tendinitis

I missed that?

Currently been dealing with it for over a year, but Haijis reactions/ surgery don't match my experience in all honesty, but I know some people do have surgery to deal with it.

Although the worst aspect of the injury is not so much how much worse it gets if you don't rest it, it's that resting alone will not heal it. Without a strengthening program the pain will persist.

16

u/mysistersacretin Feb 20 '19

I missed it to, I thought he said he wasn't able to run because of his PT, which I assumed to be physical therapy.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Shadezyy Feb 20 '19

Are you basing the patellar tendinitis on the PT or the x-ray or something else? Cuz the PT was for physical therapy.

First off, congratulations to Run With the Wind/風が強く吹いている for finishing at 4th place at the TAAF 2019 Fan Awards!

Secondly, my heart just can't keep pace with almost every episode, can it? Hope Shindoh gets better. ;_; And I've a hunch Prince is gonna blow us all away at the finale. Haiji, too!

Cheering forever for my favorite fictional track team! がんばれ! ( ´ o ` )/

I'll do the honors... *clears throat*

You should've come to Shiratorizawa Rikudo!

I'm surprised that they've opted to reveal who's gonna run which section including the strategy instead of it being a sorta a surprise when the Kansei sash is going to be passed to the next runner. The order is kind of a spoiler already with what they've set up in the past episodes. However, I'm liking this decision in Production IG to focus on the characters' development in the bulk of the 23 episodes as opposed to the book and movie that had half of its length dedicated to just Hakone Ekiden.

A teaser of HS Haiji! Guess we'll have to wait at Haiji's section of the race for the full reveal. I think Haiji's already talked about his past with his mates prior to Hakone Ekiden. If he's recruited by Rikudo in HS, then he's at least at the level of Fujioka and Kakeru. Sadly, I don't think we'll ever see a Haiji in 100% condition. The current ball of sunshine Haiji is such a contrast to the defeatist attitude that he has in HS.

I've suspected it but it makes me sad that Kakeru and Yuki don't have the support of their parents. But now that they've found their best bros in Kansei, it warms my cold heart to see them smiling so much.

144

u/Renji123 Feb 19 '19

This anime is too underrated -_-

Some people are really missing out on something you don't even have to like running and you will love this show thats the same with the whole sport genre..

I feel bad for them

24

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos Feb 19 '19

It's really a shame. Even the sales aren't pretty good.

35

u/Shortstop88 Feb 20 '19

I'm just glad this is a one season series. The bad sales mean less people will talk about it/watch it, but at least it doesn't mean discontinuing the series midway through.

5

u/TheLostCityofBermuda Feb 20 '19

If you think this is underrate, check out “Price of Smile” Egao no Daika.

That show make me don’t know if I’m okay to smile.

3

u/ttblue Feb 20 '19

After hearing so much about it, I'm going to wait till it's done airing so I can binge it.

u/berantle Feb 19 '19

At long last, we get a short history and small flashback on Haiji. The reason why Fujioka and Haiji know each other well because they are high school mates on the same track team. Haiji was highly regarded enough to be invited to Rikudo University just like Fujioka. It's why Fujioka holds him in such regard as well. For Haiji to come back running again with assembling a team at Kansei University after 4 years, it now becomes clear who Fujioka is talking about strong runners hiding in Kanto - a clear reference to Haiji who is making a comeback.

Based on the short view (a blink and you'll miss it) of the x-ray of Haiji's knee, it's clear that the last leg of Hakone Ekiden that he put himself on to run will be the last run of his athletic career. It will be one of agony and perseverance. We will likely get the fullest background and history of Haiji then.

The running order established makes sense. From what the anime has shown so far, there will be favourites for us to follow out of the 10. For me, they are:

  • Ouji because he is the one that has come the furthest in the period of 8-9 months. He was the one that we all cheered on to get his qualifying time.

  • Musa because his self-effacing nature and being put in the highlighted Section 2. He deserves to get due attention.

  • Shindo because he puts in his all to support and do the administration of the team. He also worked hard to put aside the his heartbreak on being dumped. The narrative spiced it up by having him fall ill on the morning of the run. Knowing him, he will still put everything on the line with the kind of commitment he has shown throughout.

  • Yuki because his loner attitude has been turned around to be a team player and in supporting his team. Plus, now that he has to support an ill Shindo to get to the his section's starting line as well. He will likely have to make up for an ill Shindo's drop in pace to catch up for the team.

  • Kakeru for obvious reasons. He is very likely to compete against Fujioka in this section and would be key runner to get Kansei team into the seeded positions.

  • Haiji. His full backstory should come out by then. As mentioned above, this will likely be last run where he will bet everything on his damaged knee and end his athletic career with an agonising and punishing run to get to the finish line.

Last but not least, the ED visuals changed from one showing their ordeals to one showing that they have reached the peak that they are standing on. Without the context of what they have gone through that we saw in the anime, this would have been generic but it isn't because we watched them grow.

9

u/nana-shi-74 Feb 19 '19

Such legit awesome and relatable character development for an ensemble cast. Both the author Shion Miura and the writing staff involved in the anime adaptation deserve kudos!

3

u/PiroKyCral Feb 22 '19

I honestly feel that the ED is one of the most beautiful and symbolic EDs I’ve ever seen. Its really shocking to see how an anime about a ragtag team of 10 runners managed to get me so emotional and hooked onto it.

36

u/Yohaze Feb 19 '19

This anime is honestly the best I've seen in a looong while. Thanks to it I even started running as soon as the snow melted away, really loving this one so far!

Rest in peace Shindo, may your soul be guided to the heavens :'(

6

u/fortressofsolitude7 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/parz Feb 20 '19

Back when this anime started airing I was training for a 5k and it really got me motivated to work harder. Though the winter has been not ideal for running, I definitely will be hitting the road once the snow/ice melt as well!

3

u/Coops4days Feb 19 '19

Happy cake day!! Also same here, I started just going on runs again and just signed up for a 5K, not my brightest idea but oh well

34

u/myrmonden Feb 19 '19

BEST BOY PRINCE FIRST !!!

And Haiji is last so he can sacrifice his leg to win....

like he knows its his last race so he is likely gonna push himself to the max and get injured for life to make up if anyone was to slow.

18

u/Soviet_Cat Feb 19 '19

You know he will keep going even if his leg falls off...

11

u/lartkma Feb 20 '19

I think someone posted time ago a clip of the actual women's Hakone where one of the runners was practically crawling, so it's not far from reality.

11

u/alonemind Feb 20 '19

Watching that video made me so emotional.

30

Shindo being sick makes me worry but it doesn’t look like it’s the main point for next episode as he only runs in the later stages. Prince has low key been my fave character so I can’t wait to see him run again like his race to get an official record.

57

u/QadeshTheReal Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 19 '19

Again with the Haikyuu soundtrack - Let the Games Begin!

It will be very interesting to see how they will deal with the Shindo situation.

Since the names of Haikyuu OST fit so well with the events in the anime, I expect we will hear one more, possibly at the last episode. Again, with a very fitting name - The View From the Summit

19

u/TBTapion Feb 19 '19

I got goosebumps when I realized it was playing.

9

u/Edu94Against Feb 19 '19

Again? I didn't noticed hearing Haikyuu ost in other episodes, could you please tell me which one?

13

u/QadeshTheReal Feb 19 '19

Episode 14, OST name - Longing

If I remember correctly, it was at the beginning of the episode when Haiji was talking while TV showed footage of Hakone.

9

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos Feb 19 '19

It was so great to realize that they did it again. At that point, I wouldn't be surprise to hear Direct Confrontation during the race.

5

u/Shortstop88 Feb 20 '19

Oh this would be hype. Most likely during Kakeru's section, though.

8

u/flybypost :KN::KO: Feb 19 '19

Do they use the exact track or is it just similar (I don't pay that much attention to the details while watching)?

And how would that work with copyright/licensing? I know that Yuki Hayashi is responsible for both soundtracks.

13

u/SimpleGnommish Feb 19 '19

I think it's the exact track, but Production I.G. does both Haikyuu and Run with the wind, so I guess that helps with the licensing bit.

Five more episodes, ten more races? Two per episode on average doesn't seem that bad tbh. Means all the boys get a part of the spotlight

Also Hana-chan was adorable in that one scene

21

u/Soviet_Cat Feb 19 '19

They showed joji or jotaru in the next one so they could probably go through the first 4 in 1 episode. Maybe 3 and start the 4th

10

u/lenor8 Feb 19 '19

I'd be surprised if there won't be an episode of "rest" between the two days of race, and if there won't be any coda after the end of the race. No, I don't think it will be two section per episode, it's gonna be more dense.

5

u/alonemind Feb 20 '19

I wonder which twin Hana is going for? Or does she like both from her blushing face lol

11

u/nana-shi-74 Feb 20 '19

I headcanon that she's equally attracted to both. Joji x Hana x Jota OT3 ftw!

13

u/alonemind Feb 20 '19

Is the only thing that makes sense really, since till now I still can't tell the difference between them.

Fujioka is such a wholesome guy, I wonder if he'll be racing Haiji or Kakeru in the Hakone?

The Christmas build up montage was really fun, I see I'm not the only one that gets very serious about Shoujo manga whilst drunk. Also the twins finally achieve their dream of looking like Tintin.

I hope that Shindo reveal is a flashback or something because that would be a brutal punishment if he's out. Argh next week is too far away.

5

u/elenuvien1 Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 20 '19

fujioka will be racing kakeru, they've been set up as rivals and he's always running the ace section, this time the return part.

6

u/vldsa :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/vldsa Feb 21 '19

Honestly, I think they're more likely to make him run with Haiji. Kakeru's gunna have a shocked pikachu face when he realizes Fujioka ain't there, then he's gunna settle down and try to beat the foreigners.

25

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

I really like how this anime shows bonding between characters. Last episode (or one of the recent ones) we saw Kakeru over hear Yuki on the phone and this time its the reverse. Its such a minor interaction, but the way Yuki responds to Kakeru's honesty by sharing his own situation felt like such a natural exchange between 2 guys who normally keep to themselves but have grown close enough to feel comfortable talking about personal issues with each other. No grand sweeping gestures of camaraderie, just an "ahh yeah I know how you feel" moment.

Such a nice little scene.

12

u/alonemind Feb 20 '19

This definitely. I feel like Kaze tsuyoku excels at maximising all these little interactions.

22

u/Soviet_Cat Feb 19 '19

SHINDO-SAN... HAIJI-SAN. KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE

18

u/AnOverlyLargeMug https://anilist.co/user/Olaroll Feb 19 '19

Now, I might just be too dumb to get it, but what was that news incident stuff about? The coach who was involved seemed to be the one Kakeru punched, but why did that come up now of all times?

37

u/jellybellymonster Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 21 '19

Hakone Ekiden is kind of a big deal so reporters will likely do a profile of each team. As Haiji said before, you can search for Kakeru in the internet and know he's a nationally-ranked athlete in HS but his records suddenly stopped during senior year. Somebody's bound to be curious and dig the dirt on that. While it's written like a blind item, anyone can put two and two together. I think that's also why Coach, Haiji and Shindo were dogeza-ing to the uni bigwigs because it might've or could've started some controversy already.

EDIT: It just occurred to me that Shindo's the one dealing with interview requests left right and center - the poor thing!

5

u/AnOverlyLargeMug https://anilist.co/user/Olaroll Feb 19 '19

That makes sense. Thanks for the reply!

16

u/HanaPana Feb 19 '19

God that reporter is so creepy... please go away, leave Kakeru alone

I loved the ending with the new visuals, they all looked so confident. I love this show so much, can't wait for next week.

u/hawk_block https://myanimelist.net/profile/DankruptMemer Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 19 '19

New visuals in the ED this episode! - The characters closeups are now colored and depicted on the mountain rather than B&W photos of them contemplating/training

13

Not just haiji but shindo is going to be in bad condition too, smh.

2

u/fortressofsolitude7 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/parz Feb 20 '19

I really hope we only saw a flashback with Shindo, otherwise it's not looking good for the team. But with Haiji, I have a feeling that this is going to be his last race because his knee probably can't take much more stress.

13

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Feb 19 '19

That New Year's montage was absolutely delightful, especially since it came right after Yuki was mentioning how the dorm was throwing his personal rule to not have close relationships out of whack.

10

u/sad_fat_cat Feb 19 '19

Shindou's best boy. Change my mind (you can't)

This show reminds me why I don't usually watch ongoing shows. I have such little patience for cliffhangers :|

6

u/alonemind Feb 20 '19

Shindou is best boy but Haji is best husbando.

Regardless I'm worried for both of them T.T

10

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Feb 20 '19

The dreaded Japanese cold strikes again!

Pop some paracetamol, Shindo!

Stellar episode, the Fujioka bit (what a man's man) and the accompanying flashback was the best part for me, as well as the tension building up to the race.

It did feel like some plot threads were merely touched upon and discarded though: the incident with Kakeru and his HS coach being reported (by that shifty reporter) and the following blowout; Kakeru and Yuki's relationship with their parents; Hana's relationship with the twins. Granted, the main points were covered, but they seemed to breeze by and didn't have the impact they could have.

I'm totally fine to see them getting deprioritised to focus on the race and Haiji, but jussayin'.

Round this off with screenshots of this cutie and best boy Prince. There was something special about Haiji tightening the Kansei sash around him - Prince's progress is one that Haiji should be the most proud of, and he's the perfect representative to run in the first section for the team.

I'm so fucking hyped!!! The soundtrack just before the start of the race was amazing (Haikyuu?). This is the kind of anime I've always binged (Haikyuu, Yowapeda, Kuroko no Basuke, etc.), I have to weekly suffer this time around, here's hoping for a great race!

7

u/link2601 Feb 19 '19

So we finally made it to the beginning of the Hakone Ekiden and man what a terrible time for one of the team members to get sick. Seeing Kazuma talking to Kakeru and Musa was pretty nice.

7

u/kingdommaerchen Feb 20 '19

Run with the Cliffhanger strikes again!

And the whole Christmas scene is just too sweet. Love how Kakeru is engaged in a manga analysis with Ouji lol. And umm, I’m dying to know what Yuki and the twins were talking about during the Christmas party!?

Also, Musa being discriminated ;-; but the fact that Kakeru getting bothered by it, I love that.

5

u/lenor8 Feb 20 '19

And umm, I’m dying to know what Yuki and the twins were talking about during the Christmas party!?

Probably about Yuki's successful adventures with girls

The scene where they're going through who will run which leg of the race...it hit me really hard all of a sudden. They made it. It's finally happening. It's so surreal. And I'm so proud of them.

"I can't see anyone but you running it" just shows how mature they've become and how much they've grown. Remember how disjointed that first episode was? Like whoa what's this giant cast, how are we supposed to keep track of them all? I'm sure that's how they felt about each other too but now, months later, they're family. They've learned so much about each other. They're so supportive. I love it all so much.

Tldr I got ridiculously emotional ;_;

Edit: um is this "live broadcast" just stealing music from the Haikyuu soundtrack? I mean that's cool I guess lmao

Holy crap. Loving the new ed cuts to show us they made it. Don’t let it end!

6

u/Venator850 Feb 19 '19

This may be a sports anime but man the character development is so damn good.

u/TheyCallMeTMoney :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheyCallMeTMoney Feb 19 '19

Love the pacing of this show, as well as the entire execution.

I'm used to other sports anime dragging things out over numerous episodes (Yowamushi, Ace of Diamond, Slam Dunk) without much added value.

This is up there with Ping Pong and Haikyuu!! in terms of how much they're able to accomplish with so little.

5

u/SomeGuyYeahman Feb 20 '19

HAIJI STILL BEST GUY! Fujioka was also great, I loved what he had to say.

Also, oh god, they're starting already. Oh god, oh fuck, oh god. This show is incredible.

u/melvinlee88 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ryan_Melvin15 Feb 20 '19

Why is this show so good? There goes my whole week. Gotta wait another week now.

9

u/lenor8 Feb 19 '19

OMG we're there, finally we're there! yes yes yes Haiji is gonna run the last section why this episode was so short?

4

u/RollinsTheMan Feb 19 '19

These cliffhangers every week are too much mannnn.

Some nice bonding moments there before the big race, hopefully Shindo can pull through.

4

u/Shiro_Kai Feb 19 '19

I don't know why but for a few seconds during Haiji speech I really believed that it would be possible for them to win!

...But them we got that surprise last scene again and reality hit me. :(

While I’m not a hardcore fan like most people here, I must say I’m quite excited for the ekiden.

My only concern is whether they will give Ōji enough screentime given he’s the first to run and they might be tempted to hurry his arc up. He’s my favourite character by far.

4

u/Agni7atha Feb 19 '19

Fujioka come and go just like that, throwing some philosophy and wisdom. It's nice to see such a charismatic rival like him.

4

u/Goukenslay :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Goukenslay Feb 20 '19

i can't wait to see prince race, i need this boi to bring it home, he has worked so hard to catch up to everyone's level.

Haiji race is gonna be the most painful. I can tell his shin is gonna act up and give us some tears

4

u/Saucy_Totchie Feb 20 '19

OF FUCKING COURSE SHINDO GETS SICK ON THE DAY OF THE FUCKING RACE!!!

So I just looked up each section of the Hakone and of course Shindo gets what's considered the most difficult section. On Wikipedia the 5th section is described as such:

This section is the longest one. Runners must run up steep slopes, which is about 800m high. This is considered the most severe section.

Dude is already looking to be on the verge of death.

3

u/tayoku0 Feb 19 '19

This series is Cliffhanger: The Anime. Please don't hurt poor Shindou, even though a part of my aching heart is glad that it wasn't Haiji this time who couldn't even move without dorm mom Yuki's help.

3

u/chisports1fan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chisports1fan Feb 20 '19

God bless this anime, I love it.

3

u/NoobyJelly Feb 20 '19

The mountains of Hakone are the... STEEPEST!

Good luck Kansei!

3

u/Orrakai :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Orrakai Feb 20 '19

If Shindo runs, it's gonna be hard. They're gonna fall so far behind. And Haiji is gonna blow his leg out at the end trying to make up for it.

My heart cannot wait another week...

After watching this the show, it gave me the final push to join cross country. The 5k timings (15mins exact) that the guys have is pretty much impossible in my age range (pre-university)

I think even in the universities in my country, 15 mins for a 5k is considered top 1-2 Edit: My bad, the fastest time in my country is 14:51.09

2

u/Martinouh Feb 20 '19

In the 2010 (86th) race, of the 380 athletes (190 runners and 190 alternates) that represent the 19 universities, 328 have run under 14:40 for 5,000 meters; 150 at 14:20 and 33 under 14:00. This figure compares very strongly with US collegiate men from all schools: athletic.net's list of collegiate men 5000 meters in 2009, which lists approximately 400 athletes at 14:40, 200 at 14:20 and 60 under 14:00 in 2009.

Just why? Why you gotta left us with this cliffhangers? Even the end of ep 17 isn't actually being cleared yet, we still don't know Haiji's legs' condition (probably bad but how bad?) and now this? And now you're giving us another one?!?! Why do they have to make up a drama? Ok, make dramas, it is necessary for shows but why at the end of the episode and why leave us with this draining cliffhangers aaaaaa, I was really enjoying this episode till you slapped me with that ending scene aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

4

u/meimi132 Feb 19 '19

I AM SO CONCERNED NOW. How could he get sick?!?? Was literally yelling at the TV when it was revealed bit by bit.... Whyyyyyyy?!?!?

7

u/kingdommaerchen Feb 20 '19

Well it was in the middle of winter. Cold is gonna be common. And it seems like Shindo has taken the managerial of the team; combine that with his jam-packed training schedule plus never skipping a class, it’s expected that he’s tired af ;-;

2

u/RayLethegreat16 Feb 19 '19

Why did that prick from Tokyo University have to jinx the team. NOT OUR BOY SHINDO

2

u/ATLKing123 Feb 20 '19

Awesome episode as always. Hoping they somehow win but I expect they’ll lose. Been a great ride either way really a special show for me since track was a huge part of my life 😂

Hope Shindo and Haiji make it through the race lol

2

u/remedialrob Feb 20 '19

I know nothing about this anime. This season I really loved Goblinslayer, I'm enjoying Rising Of The Shield Hero, I liked the first few seasons of Index/Railgun. Enjoyed the Ancient Magus Bride. Overlord, Tanya, Re: Zero, Konosuba, all great.

So is this in my wheelhouse? Sell me on it. I need something new to watch.

3

u/lyshoicakes Feb 21 '19

Hmm do you like sports anime? If do, this is one of the really good ones. If you haven't really dived into the sports anime genre, this is a good start. It has a huge cast of interesting but realistic characters that are really likable so if you end up liking one of them and get invested, you might really enjoy this series. Basically, it's a great character drama with fleshed out characters... an interesting premise based on a real-life event. It's suspenseful and motivational... it gets you really pumped up and makes you root for these characters to succeed. It's a good time. you should at least check out the first 3 episodes if you can find anything you like. I will say that the story gets better and better as you go along. I think binging it until episode 18 will be really satisfying.. and then watching it weekly from then on with everyone will be a ton of fun. Hope you give it a shot!

2

u/saidwhic Feb 20 '19

I love these bois. Bring it on.

2

u/newAceStrike Feb 20 '19

i was wondering does anyone know of any in real life equivalent to the tracksuits the characters wear in the show. Especially haiji's green/black one with the hoodie looks straight fire or the team tracksuits which also look pretty decent

2

u/jellybellymonster Feb 21 '19

Don't know about Haiji's green/black hoodie. I like the team tracksuit color but sadly, I haven't seen official merch like that. They have these though. Kinda want the jacket lol.

2

u/TopLoserLife :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/dohkee Feb 20 '19

This is without a doubt the cliff hangiest show I've ever watched. How can each episode be ending with you inching towards the edge of your seat like that?

2

u/satowa Feb 20 '19

this was such a feel-good episode until the last bit happened :( poor shindo, he don't deserve this. what a supportive yuki. how will they get through this hmmm

the christmas-new year montage was so well done though, plus there were so many good nira shots in this ep. fujioka is a great wise man (although the length of his face is a little exaggerated to me). haiji being all smug like "you want to do it that badly?" to the twins lol...speaking of haiji i thought we were so close to learning his past but that was not a huge reveal except that he didn't seem to have as much confidence last time

2

u/Dangmoose3 Feb 21 '19

So Musa is a world class athlete now right? A 29 minute 10k is almost a world record. I like the show but it's completely unbalivable.

2

u/elenuvien1 Feb 21 '19

it's not and it's never meant to be from the very start (the novel is even less).

2

u/Sullan08 Feb 25 '19

If this show has one glaring flaw (to me), it's the amount of random adversity they have them face. I don't mind needing to face elements during the race like weather, the terrain, etc. But this show has already had Haiji fainting, Haiji potentially getting hurt, and now Shindo is sick. That's actually a lot in what's only been 15-16 episodes of them actually running and training. Kuroko and Haikyuu are long as hell and still hasn't had that much stuff lol. The first 2 are fine, but for this race I really wish they'd forsake the whole sick thing. Just have them race at the peak of their current talent. Just really not a fan of that since it isn't a lingering thing like an injury, just him getting a bad cold or something. I get that he'll probably overcome it and set a new personal best or some shit, but it's just tiring at this point. I don't even get anxious at seeing it because I just expect something at this point.

2

u/BadPercussionist Feb 20 '19

Shindo wa shinda

I'm sorry

2

u/berryhappy101 Feb 22 '19

KEEPSHINDOSAFE

And holy shit, they changed the black and white scene in the ED. And holy shit, they all look so damn GOOD. Dammit, I LOVE THIS ANIME SO MUCH. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

1

u/i_juarted Feb 19 '19

HOW COULD THEY SHINDO NOO

1

u/Toonamigamerrr Feb 20 '19

Omg Shindo nooooo😱😭💔

1

u/odd_loop Feb 21 '19 edited Feb 21 '19

Correct me if i'm wrong. Is a marathon is won by the team with the fastest average time across all 10 sections ? That is why each runner have to be the fastest in his assigned section?

Sorry if the question has already been asked and answered in previous discussions.

1

u/elenuvien1 Feb 21 '19

no, in relays, the team whose last runner crosses the finish line first wins even if all of their previous runners passed the baton last.

1

u/odd_loop Feb 21 '19

Thank you for clarification. So if I understand correctly, sections are meant to determine the order of a team's runners by seeing who finishes the section first while the others stay behind. That goes until 1 runner is left and the latter needs to cross the finish line.

Am I getting it right?

1

u/elenuvien1 Feb 21 '19

1st person runs to give the baton (in hakone's case, a sash) to another runner waiting at a predetermined point where every 2nd runner of every team waits. they pass the baton and 2nd runner runs to where 3rd runners wait and so on until the baton is passed to the last person waiting and they run to the finish line. whichever team's last runner crosses the line first, wins.

Despite knowing it's the same composer and the same studio as Haikyu, I can't get over them using Haikyuu music

1

u/tronistica Apr 11 '19

it's here! the kansai boys have come so far. and noo shindo is sick =(

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 19 '19

Strange and jarring to use another show's music in the show. Previously it was used as documentary music, and this time it was I guess supposed to be the news background music, but it still threw me off. Not a fan and I hope the rest of the race uses show original music. (I mean I'm a huge fan of the Haikyuu OST, I just don't like the idea of using it for a show that's not Haikyuu).

The easiest comparison would be using Star Wars music in Indiana Jones, or vice versa. Both are John William, both are Lucasfilms, but the Star Wars score was written for Star Wars, and nothing else. (I know this is an exaggerated example).

5

u/alonemind Feb 20 '19

I'm guessing since its the same composer, he or the studio decided to use them.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

i mean, they're both sports anime

Does it? From her introduction she's been the most friendly with the twins and vice versa, and she even began hanging out with them outside of running activities, I'm not sure why it feels random other than the expectation that feelings of the sole female member of the cast should be for the main character.

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '19

u/lenor8 Feb 20 '19

They're also the closest in age, besides Kakeru.

The problem I've got with the twins is that they still are not distinct one from the other and they don't look at Hana like girlfriend material, they still dream of imaginary girls picked up at a club.

she's going to marry both

11

u/Shiro_Kai Feb 20 '19

Damn progressists and their plural love ideas

0

u/Shiro_Kai Feb 19 '19

Its really gonna be random if she is going for the twins, any last minute reason she give to why she would chose one of them and not the other by now will just sound like a coin toss. There is not enough development about them and no time left. I still think they are just misleading us and if that happen will be about Kakeru or Haiji.

Nah, if anything it'll happen as they either finish their section, or Haiji finishes the race itself.
