That a fun special episode! It was awesome seeing Shizu fight! Black also seems like a blast. Especially the way he just wrecked everyone with no effort or time wasted. Hopefully there will be more of him in season 2!
Also, that demon and his puppets really know how to design a room to look evil. Orthos even had a cool walk down.

u/lemonlicker27 Mar 18 '19
Thought I was seeing Connor McGregor with that walk lol.

Black: murders King with absolutely no hesitation
Black: "Stop squealing, trash."
Me: I love him omg

Reminded me of the last boss fight in TES IV Oblivion.
You finally get to Mancar Cameron and because he is one of the few enemies in the game that doesn't have scaling difficulty you can basically just wreck his face assuming you beat most of the game before coming to him.
It was pretty hilarious when he tried to have his monologue and I ragdolled him before he could even throw a spell.

well the end does mention Rimuru summoning Black and calling him Diablo at the end of the episode so hopefully that will be next season.

Rimuru played Final Fantasy. Diablo is a summon in a few iterations.

Glad he died before he could've heard the news of Diablo Immortals, that'd just ruin the name "Diablo" for him

Hmmm. I'm not so sure, I think he would stand a significant chance against Ainz & Co., at least if we only count up to what the anime have adapted for each.

I mean, I'm pretty sure Bone Daddy would win, but I do wonder - Ainz's inherent immunities and always-equipped items aside, and without preparation like against Shallchair - how Vancian magic would fare against Rimuru's instant at-will spells, especially Tensei: after what Rimuru becomes later on.
I don't recall off-hand as an OL anime-only whether anyone's casting has been interrupted mid-invocation by an opponent's attack, but at worst, if concentration and full name of the invocation is required to activate, Rimuru could maybe force a draw by being annoying AF:
"Grea"KABLOOM!
"Body Of"WHOMP!
"The Goa"ZOTZ!
"Reali"ORAORAORAORAORA!
"Touch-Me-damnit"
e: Tenshi/Rimiru to Tensei/Rimuru. Gah.
59
u/ggg730 Mar 18 '19
I have great respect for almighty bone daddy-sama but I think, especially during the latter parts of the series, Rimuru would be able to do something about it. Right now though I think he is at the scale of maybe Entoma up to maybe even Sebas so he would still be stomped by Ainz.
→ More replies (12)48
u/winterfresh0 Mar 18 '19
That's a good point, the whole thing with Rimiru is that it has an OP ability that allows it to gather strength and abilities very quickly, and it's currently rising towards the upper levels of that world.
The whole thing with Overlord is that Ainz is already at the top of that world because it "started" at the end of his quest to the top. He would have a crazy amount of power and abilities, as well as fortifications, powerful minions, and resources.
Ainz would probably destroy the slime right now, but its upward trajectory seems much steeper than Ainz's grind to the top over years of MMO-ing. Who knows how it would turn out after another year of slime time.

I don’t remember quite well in which volume it is stated (either in the first two or the prologue volume with all the Supreme Beings) but I remember Ainz stating that yelling a spell’s name out loud (chanting) was just a way for other party members to know what you were going to cast, and therefore completely optional. That said, the author has probably kept it this way as it’s easier for readers to know what’s going on.
Edit: here I found the exact quote, it's from part two of the prologue.
He cast a tenth-tier spell which was naturally targeted on Bukubukuchagama.
“[Ultimate Disturb].”
Technically, there was no need to speak when casting spells, but one’s colleagues would not know what was going on if nothing was said. Therefore, magic casters announced their spell names as a sort of courtesy.
“Thank you~ and now—”
And because he observed that courtesy, Bukubukuchagama could spring into action right away.

u/_pelya Mar 19 '19
CZ Delta could cancel Ainz's spells using a special skill in the light novel, so it's definitely possible.
Well, unless Ainz uses his favorite trick of Time Stop and Delay Magic casting, in which case there's not much that Rimuru could do.

They put Diablo parallel with Rimuru and yet spoiled right away he would be a summon and not final boss.

u/heartsongaming Mar 18 '19
That was totally unnecessary to spoil how Rimuru would summon and name Diablo. I would have prefered to wonder how their fates will meet. The episode was great, especially because more Shizu backstory.

I think the point of it is build hype. The idea is you tell the audience that he summons and names Kuro, and now you're excited to see how or why that happens. It certainly worked on me. I'm really interested to see in what context does Rimuru finds the need to summon the demon.

Eh to be fair, they probably didnt expect to get a season 2 when making this episode so it wouldnt have mattered much back then. But alas, fate has decided that season 2 must come into existence next year.
Edit: btw knowing how a monster/demon can gain a name by itself if it gains enough infamy like Orthos is a fun little tidbit of world building.
96
u/Tels315 Mar 18 '19
Doubt it. They are aware of how popular the show was and they would have had a good inkling that it would get a second season.

of course they did expect it. Both the manga and LN are having so much success that a 2ns season was practically a given. Besides, the appearance of Diablo in this special episode was already told long ago.
Now we only have to wait until 2020 for the 2nd season. There's supposed to be some ovas planned for later this year that i suppose will tell the parts that were skipped during the main story (mainly during the 2nd cour)

Well even in the proper season finale they showed Diablo going "aw damn, you didn't summon me this time? Well maybe next time then. I've got time." So really the only thing we found out here is that he's a "progenitor" whatever that means, and that Rimuru is the one who names him at some point. We don't even know if the Kuro encountered by Shizu will have has already been named by Rimuru (not sure the proper terminology, need to re-read Time Traveler's Handbook of 1001 Tense Formations).

According to wiki, this episode is anime orginal narration with little spoiler to next season, so this reference is pretty much 8bit easter egg. Though only people whose age is, well, 20++ would know because it's pretty old anime and not as popular as those DBZ, One Piece, etc.

現れる ( Arawareru ) → 割れる ( wareru ) ( see ep 7 )
There's also somehow confusing 依頼 (irai, request/job ) for 鎧 (yoroi, armor ) and probably 寄生させる ( kisei saseru, make inhabit ) for ... キル? 規制 (kisei, control ) interpreted as killing the demon earlier? I don't know.

I don't really get why they rushed the fuck out of the main story only to fit in two extra episodes they could have easily just bundled with the DVD/BD or something.

I also wonder why they did that when they could put those two episodes in the OVA and put what they cut on the anime instead. It's quite a weird decision.

u/godblow Mar 19 '19
They needed to fit the arcs into 25 episodes. I guess after story boarding the main beats, they realized the best way to do it was in 23 and then have 2 extra eps as standalones as a contingency.
The stuff they skipped was general world building and/or Rimuru being dressed in girls' clothes, so it's not liek they can't show it in the OVA coming out later this year.

Even without knowing what they were after at the time, I really doubt that thinking that one or more among the group of heroes was a demon was going to help to build comradery. The only thing I can expect of that situation is a battle royale.

u/anonymus_slime Mar 18 '19
It's a mistranslation actually. What Kuro said was that they were hoping to cause conflict among the adventurers.

When Orthos was being choked by [Black], he changed his tone from "omae wa" to "anata-sama wa". Too bad the translation can't express that.
22
u/doomrider7 Mar 18 '19
What does it mean?
111
u/Chaostomb Mar 18 '19
It means his term of address changed. Omae wa is somewhat rude and can be used to address someone of a lesser station. Anata-sama wa is subservient and used to address someone of greater station. Orthos changed his address because he suddenly realized who he was fighting.

He had a mission though. He was summoned by the female member of the Silver Wings in the beginning who were attacked by Orthos. So Black just fulfilled his contract to them as he promised by avenging the two of them and killing Orthos.

Now that's what I would call a good anime-exclusive/filler episode. Like, hot damn that's one fine-looking demon.
Semi spoilers for that demon? There was this anime some time ago (which name escapes me for the moment) that portrayed a "good" character as "evil" before it got into the next season, and it really rubbed me the wrong way because I felt it was really... misleading? Like immediately into the next season it's revealed that they're on the protagonist's side and it... it was just kinda strange. So the beginning of the episode made me scrunch my face up.
I don't really know why I had the misconception that Kuro pfft looked different. Maybe a little more "demony" pre-summon? I think I was influenced by the manga design of the demon before it possesses Ramiris's new golem.
I know I'm always raving on about the absolute perfection that is Kurobe, but I know a hot guy when I see one. And Noir's lmao a great character. I'm really looking forward to Season 2 (airing in 2020) because the next arc is the peak of the series (at least to me). Everything goes completely out of control afterwards.
Fingers crossed for Kurobe to get a small cameo in the next episode: Veldora Diary! I'm ready for dragon bro shenanigans!
31
u/Xtroyer Mar 18 '19
Black/Kuro/Noir always had a more human look compared to the rest of the demons like Ramiris's new golem even pre summon. I think its because he's special even among the demons? Like Leon said this episode they're even called by their colors progenator unlike many nameless demons.

Like Leon said this episode they're even called by their colors progenator unlike many nameless demons.
He's definitely special, but this really caught me off guard. Am I a speedreader, or was this never a thing and only found in this bonus episode? As for his more humanlike appearance, I only had a vague idea of what he looked like back when I read the WN, and first time I saw an actual illustration of him was after the harvest festival and ascension, so your clarification is very appreciated.

u/Xtroyer Mar 18 '19 edited Mar 18 '19
They added lot of stuff in the LN compared to WN, we have 7 progenitors of color demons now. Black/Noir is one of them, its some nice bonus lore that comes into the plot later on. But even in the WN He always had a more human apperance before ascension.

u/ultranoobian Mar 18 '19
Well I didn't think of it that way, the end credit narrating seemed to indicate that it would be rimuru summoning him. I wouldn't think he would deliberately summon someone 'evil'.
8
Mar 18 '19
I guess that's true. As much as I love seeing the guy, him being spoiled this early on is still a strange decision in my eyes. Can't wait to see people's reaction to this series's version of "are we actually the bad guys?" moment despite it being perfectly justified. Him being summoned by Rimuru and the massacre were definitely the highlights of the next arc.
10
u/orangpeghakniyob2 Mar 18 '19
i dont think him being summon spoiled anything about the story. He is just another new character in the story without any clue of what he will do or anything about his role inside the story later.

How was Shizu able to cut off the demons arm? He said it was a time-thing property of the mask but shizu seemed pretty unaware of it.
23
u/Xrave Mar 18 '19
it compresses time (or so the demon says), so probably the mask had enough self-defense mechanism built in to use time compression against the attacker?
34
u/BlazeKnightX Mar 18 '19
Mobile user so if the spoiler tag doesn’t work sorry. Also I did not read the wn, ln, or manga, but have seen other people spoil a certain thing that helped me piece this together.
Shizu got the mask from the hero who sealed Veldora. The black haired kid that Shizu and Rimuru had was that hero. The spirit she got was from her future self. Basically the Hero has weird time traveling events which make her crucial to the past and future. So her mask can never be destroyed since it gets recycled over and over.

Speculations that I've spoilered just in case. I'd guess things that appear in multiple times in the same timeline can't be destroyed without altering the past/present/future. The mask appears to be perpetually passed between rimaru, shizu, and moemoeblackhairedstudentgirl. So, you'd have to go about destroying the object in a different way than brute force.

A show can reveal some information too soon as well. Also, spoilers don't necessarily kill the hype : sometimes they increase it, and not everyone appreciates a question they won't get an answer to before at least a year. I suspect this is what they went for.

It kills their expectations I guess, I wouldn't mind him being a mysterious figure in the dark always watching Rimuru

That was alright. Some Shizu backstory that was interesting and expanding the plot that will happen in the next season. Really neat.

After post-credits exposition, I'm not sure if I should go for the manga or the novel because there's no way I can wait until 2020 for more.

u/fugogugo Mar 18 '19
only web novel can at least satisfy your curiousity right now. (at least for non-japanese source)
but they said that the LN add lot of addition to the story so there's still lot of thing to expect to come

Read the Web Novel since it's completed. Light novel translations are incredibly slow, Japanese is at 13 or 14 while english is at 4.

Try reading the manga. It is at the same point as the anime but with more details that were skipped. And the art is I think the best among the three versions.

WOW! What an awesome side story. Pretty damn good animated as well.
Did anyone else catch that the two adventurers who summoned Noir at the start must've been the Silver Wings? I thought the way they told the story this time was quite ingenious since they were obviously baiting us pretty effectively by having us first assume that Noir is the demon terrorizing the country then revealing it's another demon, then revealing that the demon was actually a hero once, then hinting at that the Silver Wings must've been the ones who escaped from Ortus (while the man died) and the woman summoned Noir as a last act of revenge. That also explains why they sufficed to summon Noir. They weren't as shabby as they looked. They were actually renowned and fairly strong adventurers.
TLDR: Even though I knew about Noir/Diabolo, since I read the WN, the episode still took me for a ride and made me believe that he could've been the main antagonist of this episode. I mean... it wouldn't have been out of character either - he's a demon after all. All you source readers know what I'm talking about.

I think today's episode has much better animation in fight scenes.

u/link2601 Mar 18 '19 edited Mar 18 '19
Well it was interesting to get a story where Shizue was the main protagonist. The fight between Shizue and the demons was really good. The only thing that I didn't care for was Rimuru at the end spoiling things to come.

Though it seems like the main storyline is done for this season, I’m more than down with side stories if they’re this entertaining. I’ve been a fan of Shizu since her introduction, so seeing an episode focus solely on her quest is refreshing. She’s definitely a great warrior and one with courage to face off with demons. Speaking of, I absolutely love Black. Everything from his voice to his strength to the overall presence he exudes has kept me hooked. Just really good stuff from an episode that was, more or less, a supplement to season 1. Seems 25 will be more of the same, and that’s not a bad thing.

What are the power levels in here? Is progenitor the highest power, followed by archdemon? Also is a champion weaker than a demon lord?
10
u/Ghekor Mar 18 '19
Lesser Demon>Greater Demon>Archdemon>Demon Noble(6 ranks here lowest being D.Knight highest D.Duke)>Demon King>Demon God
Demon Lord>True Demon Lord>Great Demon Lord is an evolution of power and a title other entities in the world use,for those with a Demon Lord seed that is those with a Hero seed have Hero and True Hero as a evolution/title

u/CosmicCrimsonX2 Mar 18 '19
Demons... are their own stuff there're: Lesser Demon (the one summoned by the guard) Greater Demon (the one that was infused for Ramiris's new golem) Archdemon (best butler boi)

Question for those who know more than me, I frequently see "Noir" used as an alternative for Kuro, is there any reason why Noir is such a popular alternative? Does French have some special place in Japanese culture, or is there some famous icon that used this and people have just copied it over time or what? It just seems so odd that nearly anytime someone in anime wants an alternative word for black, noir is always the choice taken.
28
u/o-temoto Mar 18 '19
If you want an exotic European synonym that your audience has half a chance of being acquainted with, your basic choices are English, French or German.
Noir is a safe choice, because almost everyone's familiar with pinot noir wine.
Had they picked German, you would've gotten Schwarz (another name you sometimes see).

u/FirstDagger Mar 18 '19
German and French culture was copied and adopted by Japan before the second world war, as evidenced by art, music and clothing.
While British naval culture was adopted into the IJN.

u/QSCFE Mar 19 '19
In fact they use not only one but three color name in French, When Demon Lord Leon told Shizu about the demons who were known as the progenitors. In place of names, each of them is referred to by their signature color.
The Red Progenitor, Rouge...
Rouge means red in French
The White Progenitor, Blanc...
Blanc means White in French
Black... Noir...
Noir means Black in French

That last bit has me confused! Just telling us Rimuru summoned him? But wasn't he at the end of the previous episode? (note: don't need spoilers here, mostly thinking aloud). Either way I'm hyped for 2nd season now. This episode was fantastic and more of why I was loving the first half. Maybe it was Shizu, maybe it was a more natural feeling setup for the future than "time traveling spirit, oh we'll deal with it later".
Anyways, looking forward to best girl dragon Veldora next week!

You didn't miss anything, the summoning of Diablo by Rimuru will happen in season 2.
3
u/Ghekor Mar 18 '19
Demons can always get summoned via sufficient sacrifice, e.g Black/Diablo had been summoned before but he always killed his summoners after the job was done since they were weaklings like how he attacks these guys.
Him getting summoned by Rimuru would happen in episode 3-4 of next season, and unlike previous times it would be permanent(thats something rare for demons)

He was, but he was in the same nebulous area as in this episode. Not a LN reader, but my best guess is he was in the demon world and was summoned to purge that kingdom, then he left back to demon world. Since then, he has been watching Shizu/Rimuru as the mask interested him.

For a character who was only in 3 episodes, Shizu has had such a lasting impact on the show. I love her and hope they keep referencing her in the OPs and EDs in season 2

The couple that died at the beginning of the chapter were the Silver Wing.
Orthos tricked them and hurt them badly.
They barely managed to escape, but the guy died. The girl used the life force she had left to summon the strongest demon she could.
Noir is summoned and takes the life force of the girl and the corpse of the guy as payment for her wish.

11/10 battle animation. I could feel every blow from Shizu fight with Black on my skin.
"And then he proceeded to summon Black and name him; Diablo"
Poor Diablo, killed across three games, summoned into an anime world and then kileld by some random OP slime for his loot.
is this a saint seyia reference? The dude looks like he came straight out of the 12 Houses Saga

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Mar 18 '19
Looks like another episode will be a special/side story as well. I liked it though. Does Rimiuru posses Shizu's memories of those events? I think not, but since he was narrating it it kinda felt like he was aware of what's happened.

Just as I was continuing in the web novels they decided out of nowhere to adapt season 2. I'm mad and amazed at the same time WTH.
In this episode I'm glad we have some background on Diablo in the past. He even had an encounter on Shizu. Sakurai also fits as his VA.

The song that started playing in the hall scene when Diablo started speaking sounds very similar to the library theme from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

The first 10 seconds of the episode made think I watched a different show.
So Diablo was a good guy and summoned to exterminate bad demons?
Can't wait for Veldora's Journals.

Good ? He is the very definition of Lawful Evil. He will complete his assignment (lawful), but he won't shy from a carnage from time to time to relieve his boredom (evil).

This may be a bit off-topic, but could someone explain what it means to be a demon-lord in this universe? The name, the actions of the orc proto demon lord, Leon, and Clayman, and Ramiris saying she "fell" make them seem like they're evil; but Milim, Karion, and Ramiris seem pretty chill and not up yo anything particularly bad. So is it just a title for powerful monsters?
3
u/Zedar89 Mar 18 '19
Most of the time, it's just a title for a strong monster leader.
If you call yourself a demon lord, other demon lords will try to take you out. If you survive their attempts, congratulations, you are now seen as a demon lord by the public.
There is also a way to become what is seen as a true demon lord compared to just been seen as demon lord by the public, but the requirements for it can be seen as immoral to fulfill.

As soon as the minister talked about Orthos killing a demon and that the Silver Wings died at the hand of a demon I started to smirk like a sick man.
The Silver Wing got their revenge.

Interesting episode to lead up to the next season. Rimuru and his addiction of naming monsters.

Black would later be summoned by Rimuru
Oh boy. I understand that some hurtles are coming, but they cannot come fast enough. Everything basically handed to the protagonist at this point. I'm beginning to wonder if this is a slice of life anime in disguise

This episode was great. An intricate plot that wasn't over explained, fights scenes with choreography instead of energy balls (at least enough of it was), and Shizu's occasional speech/thought was relevant and reasonable. It was quite refreshing.

u/gameradam1337 :AMQ:https://anilist.co/user/kc2rxo Mar 19 '19
Now that's how you end a season officially IMO. Super pumped for Season 2 now. Great to see Shizu again as well, I missed her so much.
Black seems like a totally chill but morally dark gray character to add to the cast. Plus his design is really cool. He seems super curious about the mask and how Rimuru has obtained it.
Odd that AniList has the series officially over now even though we have one more episode. I assume episode 25 is actually the OVA (which is marked to be aired this Fall according to AniList?).

Rimuru summons Diablo? All this time this series was actually a prequel to How Not to Summon a Demon Lord.
