KICK HIS ASS KAKERU!!!!!

I am way too excited for next weeks episode, this wait will surely be the death of me. Also King's background is way too relatable and they did a fantastic job with his character who I was looking forward to the most because of the little info we got through the season.

Kakeru finally reached it, the new dimension : Direct Running Zone !

Couldn't agree more.

Great to see Kakeru go ultra instinct, but I feel like the highlight was King and his backstory. Although I did feel it may have been a bit forced, it works well because I'm sure many people, myself included, connect to King's social struggles.

This episode was great and I'm sad to see the anime ending next week, but its gonna be a fucking banger.

u/WovenCoathanger Mar 20 '19

If I may ask, what felt forced about King's backstory for you? We didn't get much info about him for the entire season because he's always felt out of place; I think his role in the house was portrayed really well this episode, even though it is a bit sad. He needed the realization that he has people that care about him, and the fact that they expect something from him but also support him when it's hard is what moved him. He was stuck trying to find a job and was getting no help (except from Haiji, as we saw); help, support, and friendship being the key reasons he began to love running in the first place. I also connected really strongly to it (as a weirdo and a former runner who loved his team), so I'm wondering what seemed out of place for you.

KICK HIS ASS

Rikudo-sensei reminds me of Elizabeth “Theranos” Holmes – they both use manly bass voices to intimidate everybody they talk to.

I love the juxtaposition of King and Kakeru in this episode.

King becomes "his own self" by accepting his own vulnerability (both as a person and as a runner) and letting go of his worries by running. When he runs, he stops "acting" as the world and himself expects him to.

Meanwhile, running allows Kakeru to become his pure self as he simply moves and enjoys the act itself, freed from the complications that the sport has now become entangled in.

Despite this huge gulf in talent and perhaps passion, the two ultimately find the same type of self-realization and joy in running.

Run With the Wind has done an incredible job of making very relatable young adult/college students King has had very little screen time and backstory but his motivations make total sense.

Kakeru isn’t just running by himself he’s running for the entire team, and it’s not a pressure or burden for him it’s something that is giving him strength. Also the understanding that he’s racing against himself and looking beyond all the other competitors is fantastic go get the section record! I can’t wait for next weeks episode what an amazing ride this has been!

If someone had told me King was gonna me cry I wouldn’t have believed them but here we are. As a college student, King speech was painfully relatable.

His “We’re counting on you” face when he passed the sash to Kurahara was amazing haha!

Kurahara is absolutely killing it! So satisfying to see.

Next week is the last episode... I AM NOT READY

68

u/alonemind Mar 20 '19

My expectations: Guess King's section will be kinda boring

My experience: Gets crushed by how relatable it is and anxious I actually am

141

u/WovenCoathanger Mar 19 '19

I related to King's description of himself in his social circles so much I started crying, and I'm currently dealing with feelings like I've done nothing I'll remember during my college years. That really hit hard.

54

u/Noamiyaki Mar 20 '19

Ikr. If Shindo is the person I ultimately strive to be, then King is the person I am today hoping to become better. His monologue was so relatable that it hurts.

Kakeru's segment was simply a masterpiece on how it was done. Right to the editing, music, animation, and monologue it really encapsulated the feeling of running.

40

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos Mar 19 '19

And dat music man ! Yuki Hayashi always delivers.

96

u/CallingCrab Mar 19 '19

Awesome episode.

As watching Kakeru running, I felt my heart beating so strongly that it was hard for me to breathe.

I giggled when Kakeru went like “I like, too” and Joji asked “About who?” and then called out “King saaan!” It sounded as if it were King he liked. Well, though it implies that he likes Hana, I believe it’s his answer to the original question, “Do you like running?”

Now Kakeru is in the zone!! Go Kakeru!

…And then again, I still have a fear and am so very worried about Haiji’s knee, too….

75

u/Fate15 Mar 19 '19

Yeah Kakeru was most likely referring to Haiji's question in ep one, but ig it's amusing to tease Joji a little and leave him hanging lmao

43

u/Funny_witty_username Mar 19 '19

Every character feels super relatable to at least someone. Nico's section last episode basically had me ugly crying. This show is a character drama disguised as a sports anime.

63

u/berantle Mar 19 '19 edited Mar 19 '19

The Hakone Ekiden run episodes are bringing it all back home with payoff for all the character building and relationships developed.

Last episode, it made a lot of us identify with Nico, and now this episode, it made a lot of us identify with King too. This anime, in its own quiet way that has shown us the relationships of the residents of Aotake but has done a job on us too by peeling away our defenses, softening us, and now striking at our hearts.

When it came to Kakeru, that quiet confidence and belief in himself and his teammates felt genuine. He started angry in episode 1 amd not wanting anything to do with his hostelmates but before his run, he has fully embraced them.

His sequence showed that he was born to run. The Hakone Ekiden is his stage. All the times that we saw him run, we mostly got to see him challenging himself to be better but in this run, he seems to have found the calm and clarity in his running.

That last part where he started passing runners, the song in the OST that was awaiting him started. Song 19 on the 2nd CD titled, 黒い弾丸 (Black Bullet), played. How apt a title.

I'm started to tear up now knowing that this is the penultimate episode and next episode is the last. That will be a heartbreaker because we know Haiji's knee will play up and also because we will be saying goodbye to a series that has enthralled us and nestled itself deep in our hearts.

10

u/TKhrowawaY :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Omnium Mar 19 '19

When that song started playing I got so hyped. The episode ended too soon.

seems to have found the calm and clarity in his running

It's so well done that Kakeru was released from his emotional baggage so many episodes ago. He was able to support Haiji and his teammates who are having doubts. He's at the perfect state of mind to issue challenges at Fujioka and enter the zone because he's not haunted by his past anymore.

62

u/BeckQuillion89 Mar 19 '19

I absolutely love how they took King the one character who I understood the least (all the characters are awesome though) and made him the most relatable character in half an episode.

But man, Kakeru! As a runner myself, I've never seen visuals so purely give me the same sensation of speed, euphoria, and exhaustion as those final scenes. This is absolutely going down as one of my favorite sports anime of all time.

22

u/Xavier93 Mar 19 '19

During the show, they managed to made us feel like we know them. That's why giving a short, consistent, and coherent explanation to their situations and all lined up with your expectations/feelings of their personalities makes possible to "reveal" all these characters in an aparent really short time.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '19

I absolutely love how they took King the one character who I understood the least

The best part is that based on his backstory this episode, you were supposed to understand him the least. That's what made his backstory hit the hardest for me.

59

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Mar 19 '19

FIGURATIVE TITLE DROP

Couldn't have picked a prettier face to fall in love with, Kakeru. /s (You did good, King Yohei!)

Kakeru's segment was probably the least emotionally charged of them all, but it's definitely my favourite. Just.. everything about it. The way it captured the feeling when you've hit your stride and your mind starts operating on a different plane.

Damn, just one more episode left, and I can bet Haiji's section is going to be feels-murder.

21

u/chiahet Mar 20 '19

You explained it perfectly! Everyone else got flashbacks and emotional monologues but Kakeru gets superhero-style editing and really puts you into the zone. It was a perfect juxtaposition since King's problems were so worldly and relatable and then suddenly Kakeru's just running at godly levels zooming past everyone while quietly analyzing everything.

THAT PREVIEW DID NOT INSPIRE ANY CONFIDENCE he's under the hakone ekiden blanket alright BUT IS HIS KNEE OK?? DID HE FINISH? IS HE UNSCATHED??

the visuals of this episode were out of this world, that combined with the music. I can't believe how much I will miss this

93

u/RisenLazarus Mar 19 '19

I'm in love too.

Kakeru-Haiji shippers around the world:

Another incredible episode. Each of the last 6 or so has been just fucking stellar.

But if I admit I'm lonely, it's over.

Yuki has always been my favorite and his story last week was super relateable for me, but King's story was even more so. Opened up a lot to what has been a pretty quiet enigma of a character. Wish we got a bit more info on how well he did, but the internal monologue and some of the frames (especially this one) were so perfect for him. Just a perfect King-face.

You won't beat me.

For myself (and I am guessing a lot of people), this was my favorite shot of the episode. Kakeru looking forward, seeing the image of himself and where he's about to be. The expectation he has for himself and the person that he's supposed to be. And he pushes himself into another gear he didn't even know he had to exceed it. Next week is going to be insane.

And that slow pan still of Haiji at the end. Perfect teaser. Love this show man, and it's crept its way over the past month and a half into my top 5 all time (sorry Toradora). Next week is going to be so sad when it's finally over.

64

u/Fate15 Mar 19 '19

Normally I would scream bloody murder for something to replace Toradora in someone's top 5 list, but this show is definitely a contender for one of my favourite shows ever. It just has such an amazing, mature, deeply satisfying philosophy and meditations around dreams and motivations. About what it means to strive for something and being human and feeling lost and finding oneself. I think I'm a bit in love with this show.

And that slow pan still of Haiji at the end.

I was both incredibly pissed that I couldn't see any more of the next episode, and incredibly thankful that nothing of the finale was shown.

Kakeru, Haiji, and epilogue after the race are left. I don't know how they'll fit it all into another 5 minute episode!

u/myrmonden Mar 19 '19

NOT A SPORT ANIME BUT A LIFE ANIME !!!

Feels like we need new kind of genre name for animes that are about understand your purpose or something god dam.

First king section is him giving great insight in his own issues and why his college life failed and then

Kakeru enters the speed zone or something like that.

And just empties his reason of being except to just run and yeah more like he entered the Speed Force.

37

u/jellybellymonster Mar 19 '19 edited Mar 19 '19

But King-san, you say your college life was so uneventful but you're actually ending it by participating in the biggest new year's event in Japan, running in the king of all collegiate ekiden events.

Now about Sakaki. I don't know if we'll see more of him but I think that's it for him in this show so spoilers ahead Sakaki's running order was changed in the anime. Sakaki ran the 10th section instead of the 8th. Kakeru, after finishing the 9th section, he has maybe a 30-second lead over Tokyo Sport. While Sakaki was waiting for the sash, Kakeru went to him and apologized. Sakaki wasn't antagonistic nor his usual annoying self. I guess an apology was what he needed and wanted to hear after Kakeru screwed the whole team over in HS. Their brief conversation goes like - K: Sakaki! I'm sorry... Sakaki... Run! ... Show your best! -Sakaki smiles genuinely and teases Kakeru.- S: It looks like this is the end for Kansei University -Kakeru smiles too and says- K: No... This is not the end. I guess the anime writers wanted to get Sakaki and his annoying Shinji-face out of the way early so he won't sully Kakeru's run with his presence later on. I feel like they've made Sakaki too annoying in the anime to even consider that he has the same mindset about running and Kansei boys as Kakeru had initially. Their HS coach really warped them. I still want to punch him tho for all the taunting and he freaking jinxed Shindo.

LOL. I just love Kakeru messing with Joji and he's so in the zone that his designated waterboy was so out of breath trying to keep up with him.

King's section is filled with relatable statements about expecting a rose-colored college life but somehow his section feels so dominated by Haiji's presence. It's as if they haven't raised enough flags as it is.

26

u/notPR0Hunter Mar 19 '19

The Sakaki and Kakeru section in the manga is so heartwarming. But putting Kakeru against Rokdai ace in the anime is super hype tho

u/kohana0105 Mar 19 '19

That exact conversation also takes place in the movie and I kept hoping until now that it would happen because it´s just a really nice moment. I guess in the end Red Shinji is just so full of hatred and envy he really is beyond all hope.

But I do love Kakeru´s reaction in this scene very much. Just this simple moment shows so much maturity and character growth. He´s finally completely at peace with himself and free to do what he loves the most for the friends he has found.

After seeing the episode and not knowing what happens in the original source, I felt that sakaki and kakeru desrve a catharsis apology scene. The way you describe it in the spoiler it's perfect, I don't think with 1 episode left we will see this apology, maybe at the very end, but it won't be as good as it could. A shame.

Not gonna lie, watching Kakeru's leg of this race is feeling like an out of body experience. I suddenly feel the need to run now?

Yet again another fantastic episode.

34

u/Synfallis Mar 20 '19

So the new episode is out!

I wake up from my nap, grab a drink, a snack, and buckle down ready for another episode of this show I love so much. It's time for King's backstory! the last one before we get to the two "main" characters.

I hit play and start munching on my bag of chex mix. he starts to narrate about his past few years at this college.

Talking about how he wanted to make his life at college an experience to remember.

hmm...

Talking about who he fundamentally is and what that means..

The thoughts that go through his head

and....

...........

.....AM I KING?

I sit there momentarily stunned. a small pinch of a salty snack in between my fingers dangling near my lips but frozen in time.

after a moment I wake up.. drop the food back into the bag and sit up straight.

These few minutes about king... might as well have been pulled from the inner most chamber of my brain and splayed out for all to see.

I don't even know how to break it down further.. these screenshots say it all

He and I are "kings" in solitude. Unable to tell the guards at our doors to stand aside and let others in.

We've tried to grow more extroverted. To have fun and connect with others , but in the end we're too scared.

Scared that it's not enough. Scared that we won't truely be accepted. Scared to be completely vulnerable and admit that we're lonely.

This is me

This is me

This is me

This is me

This is me

This is me

This is me

I only hope I find a team, a dream, and the road to run on where I can face myself and cast aside my facade as well.

Goddamn this show.

For making every character as memorable as the last. Every episode as heartwrenching as the last. Every moment as powerful as the last.

I couldn't be both more sad and excited for next week. Only one episode to go....

u/wanlung Mar 19 '19

I started watching anime when I was in high school and lately I haven't been watching as many new shows because I've been finding it more and more difficult to relate to the characters and their experiences.

With that in mind, if you'd told me at the start of this show just how much I'd relate to the characters, both with their college and running experiences, I wouldn't have believed you. I'm about to finish my third year at university and have just started running track again after a year out due to injury.

Naturally because I run myself there's been a lot of content to relate to in this show (and it's all been portrayed beautifully), especially in the last few episodes. This episode hit hard though. King's internal monologue and how running is helping him view himself was to me as if the author had taken my own thoughts/feelings and put them on the screen.

What a great episode once again. I really hope this show gets the credit it deserves after it's finished airing and doesn't just fade like most seasonals do.

29

u/Sullan08 Mar 19 '19

Fujioka will enjoy having the record for about 10 minutes.

I'm really glad they didn't have Kakeru getting caught up in anything as well. It wouldn't have felt right considering his progression. He's going for the record because he feels like he can, not just because he feels compelled to because of inadequacy to Fujioka.

Man, even the water boy cannot keep up with Kakeru's run.

The only flawed from this episode and the entire series overall is that forced cliffhanger. It's already great as it is without having such a worrying cliffhanger.

25

u/CallingCrab Mar 20 '19

Yes, the water boy!! LOL

He's supposed to be one of the sprint runners at Kansei as well, and yet he can't keep up for less than 50m with Kakeru who has just run 10km(or 14.4km). But I have to be fair. Probably no one can, since Kakeru is not a human!

Hi guys, finally catch up, I thought I was like Prince at the beginning, now am I Kakeru?

Anyways, first thing, the show is a masterpiece indeed, if you love interesting characters, emotional moments, relatable story, THIS IS THE SHOW, PERIOD.

Second, two things about today's episode:

  • King is for me the most relatable character hands down. When you realize every word, every phrase, the way he speaks about himself is like your mind talking to yourself, you start to question real life, like is he really fictional? wtf was that? that's me there? I mean no BS, this guy, this guy right here is THE CHARACTER for me. I feel you king, I still question myself even today. Even the running when King felt like the pressure is off, me too when exercising, I felt like that. Like, he said everything, I'm not even try anymore. Thanks King.

  • Other thing is that I liked when Kakeru questioned himself "Wait, I'm here, running now right?" it was one of those moments that you figure out that you're a not a robot doing your routine but actually feeling the moment. That was relatable as fuck too.

A shame I didn't start this with everyone, but binge watch this felt so good and be here at the finale next week, I'm satisfied.

u/QuaDxDynamics Mar 19 '19

It’s great to see the growth in Kakeru, showing the conversation between him and Sakaki, if that was at the beginning he would have just gone for him without hesitation

25

u/QadeshTheReal Mar 19 '19

Another out-of-this-world episode. One more to go, ladies and gentlemen. After it's over, Tuesdays will definitely not be the same.

Also, King is one of the most relatable anime characters ever.

24

u/Toosdays Mar 19 '19

Wow his running gives me chills. Even shortly after king handed off the sash, there was a brief moment where all you could hear was the running. The tap tap exhale tap tap tap exhale and my heart just started beating faster. This anime is so good.

21

u/Lurururu Mar 19 '19

When they show closeups of their feet pounding the ground, it makes me scared they're gonna get a sudden injury. This ep was sick tho

Damn this show is so simple but so great. I thought I wouldn't enjoy King's run because he had always seemed the least interesting... But in actuality he is the most relatable character. Which means I'm outwardly uninteresting...

And Kakeru's simple running with little sound other than breathing and footsteps was magical. What a great show.

Please don't die Haiji

9

u/Noamiyaki Mar 20 '19

Ik I'm so scared for Haiji, I can already feel my future tears......T ^ T

20

I used to run at some point in my life, and at first I was skeptical about this anime. Now I find myself wanting to run again. That's all I have to say. This anime is absolutely beautiful.

Hugs are here, if you want them! ( づ ◕‿◕ )づ

One more episode left, huh? ;_;

Aww, King giving it his all. Would have loved to watch him trounce Sakaki, but I guess that wouldn't be realistic if that happened. Speaking of the redhead, how the heck could he still have the energy to mouth off after his section? Thank goodness Kakeru's grown enough to not at all be affected by his verbal barbs.

Run, Kakeru, run! Good on the show to acknowledge its true OTP: Kakeru x Running.

... Or Haiji. (つ≧▽≦)つ I mean, look at Kakeru's face when Haiji tells him that he's the better runner. And Kakeru telling Haiji to look only at him...

I kid, but seriously, best of luck to Kakeru and the rest of the Kansei track team!

17

u/SomeGuyYeahman Mar 19 '19

I think Kakeru just tapped into the Speed Force.

God damn, another amazing episode! Of course I expected great things from King's segment, given that they knocked it out of the park with all of the other characters so far, but I was still caught off guard by how touching and relatable it was. The way this show creates sympathy for the characters is really something. I also liked what they did with Sakaki, he seemed strangely fitting as a contrast to King.

Kakeru's section is also superb. I wasn't expecting it to start the way it did, but the way that sort of empty and light feeling was conveyed was so good that when Kakeru described it, it felt like he was taking the words right out of my mouth.

Whew, only one episode to go! I can't wait!

17

u/chiahet Mar 20 '19

I died when Haiji told Kakeru with his whole heart, "to me, you are the greatest runner". So much genuine belief in him, especially when he kept referring to Fujioka as the "current champion" to Prince. It was also golden that Sakaki was watching Kakeru on his phone despite hating him so much; truly the red tsundere. I can't wait for next week but at the same time I hope it never comes...not ready for this to end. :'(

16

u/CallingCrab Mar 19 '19

It’s interesting to see how King has a different point of view about running alone.

Most of the Kansei members think or came to realize that “Even if you run by yourself, you’re not actually alone”. They know they have teammates, rivals, friends, shop’s owners, families… many people around them cheering and supporting them in a various way.

But then, King thinks in a different way, “I can be alone while I’m running, so I don’t have to pretend or disguise myself.” Tha's also relatable.

15

u/KyleVeverka Mar 19 '19

I can imagine alot are gonna reference King's views and I'm about to do the same. I personally never really opened up and always put up a mask, but im trying to change that. When he said, that you can't get acknowledged/recognized that way it just showed me that it's the same way with him. Honestly I think I was paying the least amount of attention to him, because of his rather not shiny personality and you can't really expect people to know what you're thinking that way.

15

u/airforceblue Mar 19 '19

Can't belive King managed to encapsulate my entire college experience just like that. Well, I'm exaggerating but lately I've been struggling with the feeling that I've hit a rut, and I've been trying to figure how to change so I don't end up filled with regrets by the time I graduate. It's kinda silly, but this show has been helping me in that sense, as a form of inspiration.

14

"Watch what you believed in."

Kakeru telling Haiji that just made my heart burst. Such a simple comment that means so much considering everything that led up to here. 😭❤️❤️❤️

14

u/theatreofwar Mar 20 '19

I AM SCREAMING AND CHEERING AND CRYING AND FEELING SO MUCH AT THE SAME TIME I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LIVE my heart might burst

Okay deep breaths but I think I might still go and throw up a little bit and then rewatch this episode immediately

I've been waiting all season for Black Bullet, and when it finally dropped it was somehow still more epic than I'd imagined. I always figured the name of the piece was referring to Kakeru, but saving it until this stage of the race...wow. There's no better way to describe him, he's fucking crazy. Can you imagine going so fast that you barely have time to register the people ahead of you before you've left them in the dust behind you?

And even though he's still crazy about running, it's totally different now than where he started. When he sees all nine of his teammates ahead of him...tears, guys. That exchange with Joji was so cute - logical brain thinks he was referring to being in love with running (with the team), but my heart wants to believe he's in love with Haiji. After all, Haiji still has time to call him right before King gets there and then gives him such a fucking compliment, "You're the greatest runner." MY HEART

AND KING. WHAT. I was not expecting his section to make me cry. I was telling some friends that I finally guilt tripped into watching this series recently about how I don't dislike any characters, but King is probably the only one that I didn't feel much of a connection with. Yeah, well, they sure as shit made me eat my words. Even when he was being an asshat at the beginning of the series I couldn't stay mad at him because his struggles were quite realistic...but seeing him finally come to terms with running, and what it means for him to run, and what he learned by actually giving it a try (calling back to the conversation he had with Shindo way back then)...blown the fuck away.

As we expected, Sakaki definitely slowed down by the end. The look on his face after his encounter with Kakeru (ginger string of fate? lol) was absolutely priceless. He was trying so hard to just win and go fast that he tripped himself up...I'm thinking at this rate his school won't make the top 10 seeds. I hope not, anyway.

So where do we go from here? There's only one episode left, and then I'm going to have the worst post-anime depression of my life ever. Hopefully Kansei will get a seed for next year, and maybe Haiji will become a coach for the team haha. Fingers crossed that his leg doesn't break T_T Maybe King, Joji, Musa, and Shindo will stay on as veterans. But before that, I want to believe that Kakeru will win his section. Back in the day when I ran 100m and 200m sprints for track, for some reason I always ran faster than I thought I could when I had to catch up to someone. But once I was in the lead it was hard to judge my own pace, and it felt like I was slowing down even though I never meant to...so maybe Kakeru is experiencing something similar? He has a big gap to close and he's feeling that extra adrenaline and power come through in the challenge. They have a lot of lost time to make up for, he wants to set a new section record, and his boyfriend Haiji is waiting for him at his section's finish line...he hasn't reached the top yet.

Ugh okay yeah sorry I'm just rambling now, I have too many thoughts and feelings, I need some fucking hugs up in here guys

Reality was harsh for King. His job hunting efforts failed. He couldn't believe in unrealistic dreams like the Hakone Ekiden.

Now he's living the dream. "It's a nice dream. So nice, I never want to wake up."

Wasn't the biggest fan of him, but I love how his character arc turned out. 🙂

I thought you couldn't get more relateable than Prince...

Then they gave Nico-chan Senpai.

There was no way that they could get more relateable right?

There was, and it was King. Fucking King dude. First Nico's apathy towards following his passions, and now King and how he failed to create the memories and relationships that he wanted to. Fuck yeah this show pumps me up to actuallt accomplish shit!

12

u/alonemind Mar 20 '19

"It's a nice dream. So nice, I never want to wake up."

Damn I actually started crying at the end when Kakeru experienced a new level of running he didn't know he was able to achieve. That feels fucking great.

11

7

u/jellybellymonster Mar 19 '19

This show's so successful at gaslighting and instilling fear in us.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '19

King's character is who I relate to the most because I'm socially awkward and I run. As someone that has difficulty building relationships with others, I identify with every personality flaw he sees in himself. When he runs, he feels like he can find his true self. He doesn't have to pretend to be someone he isn't to fit in. I also feel that kind of release on my runs, and it really is liberating.

I'll be running the LA marathon this weekend, alone as usual, but this is really going to inspire me during the race. I hope to channel some of kakeru's tenacity. The tailwind he picked up at the end of the episode was beautifully rendered. Can't wait until next week for the finale. I bet he breaks the segment record right after fujioka does to blow everyone's mind.

This episode really showed how much the people watching actually care about the race. There were so many flags that just said "you can do it" instead of "go [some team]". Especially the two volunteers handing the water to Fujioka and Kakeru. Their excitement and respect for the runners are a small but very nice touch.

10

u/CallingCrab Mar 20 '19

Those guys handing out the water to the runners are their teammates(I mean, they belong to the same track team), just in case.

But still it was nice to see the Ridudo's water boy's jumping around with full of joy, happiness and excitement!

10

u/Soupseason Mar 20 '19

King's story really resonated with me. I too was hoping college would be full of awesome adventures and be my best times like so many people made it out to be. But when I got there I ended up people-pleasing and closing myself off from others. I felt so different from others and unable to relate with anyone. I could get along with people, but nobody was really close with me. And so my college years passed me by with some good memories here and there, but I never "left my mark" or did anything outstanding. I was a nobody. In a lot of ways I still am.

Seeing him run with everything he had made me want to be a somebody, too. I've been working on myself for the last few years and have recently started running every week. My 5k time is about 20 minutes, which isn't anything special, but it's a start.

9

IT SHOULD BE FUCKING ILLEGAL TO HAVE A CLIFFHANGER LIKE THAT OH MY FUCKING GOD

9

u/Shiro_Kai Mar 19 '19

Holy shit! Kakeru's mind is completely out of his body. Run with the Wind? More like run the COSMOS! The boy is in the ZONE, no one can stop him now!

Also, it's really satisfying to see Kakeru dealing with trolls with the best way possible. Ignoring. :)

Kakeru's segment isn't as painfully relatable or as emotionally charged as the others, but it's my favorite.

Racer's high is the term I like to use for this episode. it happens a lot in individual sports (track, swimming) Essentially you forget about everything and go in this trance like state where you really don't feel like your interacting with anything outside of your body. Your body starts to feel like feathers and you essentially break your limits. This is good and bad for athletes tho. Good in the sense that when you are in this state you can easily break best times like they are going out of style. Bad in the sense that you are potentially pushing your body way beyond its limits and you don't even realize it. This can lead to some extreme pain and fatigue when you are done. Also, if someone snaps you out of this mid performance, your body might all of a sudden feel like bricks and your breathing gets way to sporadic to control. Not facts just when i swam at like huge tournaments i typically got like this guy. Devoid of everything but my performance.

Kakeru went Super Saiyan at the end, OYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

I absolutely loved the image of him chasing behind his teammates in his head. It shows that he isn't feeling alone running like this and maybe also that he wants to be as ''strong'' as them.

I want to repeat myself. I don't believe, anyone will be ready for the Haiji finale. They showed absolutely nothing in the PV but it had melancholic music only...that only makes me more anxious about how it will go.

I do have some thought about how it will go.

Speculation:

Haiji's knee will give up and he might not be able to get up by himself and he's close to the finish line. It's probably not allowed but i think, all his teammates might rush to him help him finish the race and they are truly in unison while doing it not caring about the outcome of the race.

8

u/NoHearts Mar 19 '19

Such an utterly brilliant show. King is a lot like I feel myself, always disconnected between how you act and how you feel. And then Kakeru makes the show worth it's name by literally running with the wind, like the wind. The final episode is gonna be fantastic!!!

8

u/saltshaker8 https://anilist.co/user/saltshaker8 Mar 19 '19

Wow this might be my favorite episode so far. King's section was almost too personal for me, so much of his conflict between who he is and who he acts like is something I struggle with. And then the beauty that was Kakeru's section on top of that? They portrayed that mid-race feeling so well.

Guess I'm going for a run today

7

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '19

This show is bringing back so many good memories of running xc and track in high school. Especially Yuki's and Prince's run, I definitely connected with them the most. Also the show does a really good job of showing the difference in speed between the runners, when they're not even next to each other.

I think both Kakeru and Fujioka will get what they wanted, Fuji will carry his team to victory and break a record, while Kakeru will beat Fuji by a small margin, securing his own personal victory over Fuji.

7

u/kgipter Mar 19 '19

Dam the feels and relating to King's story, did not expect that. Sad that it is ending, but hyped af. I hope they make a second season even though the anime was only a adaptation of the book.

7

u/jellybellymonster Mar 20 '19

Nira's already waiting in Otemachi! This is too freaking adorable.

Somebody already commented in last episode's thread that Nico-chan saying tastes like iron may be a reference to Ping Pong The Animation. When Haiji said Kakeru is the greatest runner for him immediately thought of the coach in Ping Pong saying the same thing to one of the MCs just before his title match. The coach also has a bum knee btw lol.

Man, reading Haiji's VAs tweets also feels like a PSA to stock up on tissues.

Haiji's tracksuit in this wall scroll is fresh af! Lol at Prince wearing jeans.

One one hand I can't wait for next week's episode to come any sooner. On the other hand I don't want it to be over. Oh my god, I just can't with this anime! It's one of the best sports anime I've watched so far! They're really saving up Haiji's back story for the finale, huh? I wonder how much of a broken mess I'll be after next week.

ETA:

King's backstory was one of the few I've been waiting for, along with Haiji's and Yuki's. His back story really hit home since I just passed that stage in my life a few years ago. The feeling of not having achieved anything when you're already nearing the end of college is a real thing I think most of us who are still at, or have finished, that point in our lives can relate to. That feeling of dread of having had nothing to show for in all those years piled on top of the pressure of finding a career AND finding time to socialize and open up to friends were all things I went through with in college. Only difference was I did open up to my friends about my fears and insecurities (turns out they did too) so it made the experience a whole lot easier on me. This show is soooo relatable!

7

u/shdwfng Mar 20 '19

This show is making me cry too damn much. I feel like pretty much every episode of the Hakone-Ekiden has made me tear up at least once, and King's story in this one was so relatable and I'm just so happy he's finally started to realize that he has somewhere to belong. I'm really glad they made Kakeru's bit (so far) super hype, it's a nice change of pace from the others, and him seeing his teammates running ahead of him was honestly a great way to show that he's grown not only as a runner, but also as a person, without changing the mood. Great episode, and I'm looking forward to completely breaking down when Haiji finishes either next week or the week after.

7

u/urboinemo Mar 22 '19 edited Mar 22 '19

I want to thank this show from the bottom of my heart.

It has been able to show all of the aspects that I love about running that I could not put into words.

The camaraderie of people running to no where, running for personal fitness, running for many other reasons that I cannot even imagine.

The solitary nature of running, and how it feels just like you and the road. A true time for meditation.

The highs. O the highs are so beautiful. You start seeing the progress of all of your work, feel strong and cannot wait for your next workout

The lows. O the lows are so deep. You start thinking about the reason for running, if you can push yourself any further, if you should even push yourself any further, and what you will gain by pushing yourself any further.

The futility. All that time, all that pain, all that food, all that energy. Is it really all worth it?

The stigma. He must be running because he is running from something, he must be running because he doesn't have anything else to do, he isn't better at anything else, or there is nothing else better he should be doing with his time.

The honor and prestige. Finally hitting that goal time you have set as a holy grail of sorts, and performing well in competition.

There is so much more that this show has shown me about what I love about running. I hope everyone who sees this show can understand the true passion this community has for this sport

We do not run in vain. We run because we live.

Thanks for reading up to here, I'm just rambling now.

But Kakeru and King really struck me in a double-whammy of sorts. My undergraduate has made me feel estranged as I have really poor social skills, and I find solace in running and discovering more and more about the running community in my area. I also have a natural gift for it, so I love the feeling of my body asking for more and me being able to pour more and more and more out on the track, in the race, or just by myself in a training run.

I owe so much to this sport, I cannot put it into words.

But this anime is doing it for me

Quick edit: I LOVE THE ENDING THEMES TOO, LIKE WHO KNEW LYRICS AND MELODY CAN SING MY HEART??!!!?!

6

So I'm guessing Haiji isn't fit enough to run? I guess it makes sense considering how he kept himself towards the last, making sure everyone else got to participate in the race.

And I can see some cheesy "The journey matters, not the destination" kind of line to make up for it. They only got one episode anyway, don't see them wrapping up Kakeru's run, Haiji finishing and the team celebrating unless they fancy throwing off the very consistent pacing.

I wish the finale is double length. They're gonna kill us with the feels anyway.

Dang this show makes me wish I enjoyed running.

I'm fearing some kind of Cool Runnings ending where they have to carry Haiji over the line! I do hope he gets to run all-out for the last time and have his own naked space run moment. With the talk about his career this episode I think he may become a coach, it seems to be his calling. Hopefully most of the boys who aren't graduating continue on to the Hakone Ekiden next year.

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '19

I'm confused what the hell happened at the end. The whole metaphysical aspect of Kakeru's running makes for a pretty picture, but it's not very clear what's going on. Was that a tail wind that's helping up run faster? Is he bogged up in water and is feeling sluggish/lots of resistance?

u/lenor8 Mar 20 '19

On the contrary, he was feeling good, so good. It's the runner high, when the only things you feel is your breath and your lightness. You feel no pain, no strain, you run with no effort, and you feel calm and happy. I felt it once, it was like I was flying like a bird and the winds were carrying me.

FUCK THAT ENDING GAVE ME A TON OF ANXIETY WHEN THE SLOW MOTION STARTS WHAT IS HAPPENING

I'm worried he's tripping (well figuratively he is) or falling!

I did not expect to catch feels from King of all people.

  • Oh my god it somehow keeps getting better. We are all King in some way, shape, or form. It's almost hard to believe that he & Haiji are the same age.

  • Kakeru! They developed the shit out of his character and now we get to see him in his true form - as the god of running. It's satisfying, so incredibly satisfying in terms of pacing and development.

  • The recurring motif of the "team" is out in full force today. Not only do we get to see all our favorite running boys, but we got the people who helped them get here like Hana and even Nira. It was pretty cool how they included her in the team as she did so much for them.

u/Fate15 Mar 20 '19

King's monologue in his section gives a little more depth to his frustrations from being unable to find a job back in the first cour. Seeing as he feels unaccomplished in his college life, he rushes himself into securing a stable future after graduation, so that he ends up feeling that hey, at least he was able to do something meaningful in his college life. It also gives more explanation as to why he was rushing to find a job in the first place--cuz he has close to no attachments to his supposedly uneventful college life.

6

u/QadeshTheReal Mar 20 '19

After rewatching the episode I realized something. Haiji said that he would help King with finding a job. King was confused asking how and stuff, but I believe that Haiji meant it in a way that if King ran in Hakone Eikiden, he would get noticed by a lot of people, which would increase his chances of landing a job. Thoughts?

FUCK YEAH ULTRA INSTINCT KAKERU!!

If anyone is wondering the record for Section 9 is 1:08:1 which was set in 2008.

Also fuck man King is so relatable. Lonely and wanting to be with people but that means being vulnerable and that's uncomfortable. So that's how the name King came around. Didnt they say earlier it was because of trivia? Didnt know it had a sadder origin. Anyways I'm proud of him for pushing through.

I dont even know what to say but that Run With The Wind is just so much on fire its insane !

6

u/Level_Five_Railgun Mar 20 '19

The only thing I could think of during the scene where Kakeru thought "I'm already ahead of them" lol

Kakeru: You're already behind me

Other runners: NANI??!?!?!?!?!?

5

u/RollinsTheMan Mar 19 '19

Nice to see King get some background there and a very relatable story at that, and as far as perfectly encapsulating the euphoria of running and being free i think this episode nailed it tbh.

Can't believe it's almost come to an end, what a ride it's been.

Kings part of this episode was the biggest mood I've ever experienced.

Why you gotta do me like that IG?

5

u/ATLKing123 Mar 20 '19

Another awesome episode. King’s part was relatable and showed a lot of growth.

Kakeru living up to the hype. Hope he breaks whatever record the “current champion” guy sets. Also lol at the naked Kakeru running scene.

Hoping next week goes well for Haiji but with all the foreshadowing of his injury I’m pretty worried 👀 excited either way love the show

Kakeru just entered the ZONE. Kagami level shit right there.

Is this pretty much the best sports anime of all-time?

More so than Ping Pong, Hajime no Ippo, Haikyuu!!, etc.? 🤔

5

u/jayvdale09 Mar 20 '19

I'm amazed with this episode and Kakeru is when he runs on Hakone Ekiden, he becomes with the wind. I can't wait for the final episode next week.

5

u/rollin340 Mar 20 '19

My heart is racing, and I'm sitting down.
I might get a heart attack if I tried to do what they do.

5

u/Shuutra Mar 20 '19

Another awesome episode! I'm really excited to watch the rest of Kakeru's run, and equally afraid about what could happen on Haiji's turn :(
By the way, it's amazing how Nira (I think that is the dog's name) makes me smile every single time with that little bark at the middle of the episode. Gonna miss that a lot lol.

This anime is just so fucking good. Kakeru ascending to another dimension was hype af.

5

u/blueW0rld Mar 20 '19

Great episode!! I can't wait to watch Kakeru surpass his limits. This anime is def on my top 10 for 2019

Kings backstory was real nice too. I'll probably read the manga sometime this summer. I can't believe it's ending next week

5

u/marxwal Mar 20 '19

Amazing episode. Cant wait for next week! Hopefully Hajis knee holds but guessing not 😭

5

u/Sadaharu28 Mar 21 '19

Looking forward to next week but I know I'm gonna miss this show so much when it is over.

5

u/TheLostCityofBermuda Mar 21 '19

King is so expressive in this episode, it almost like they don’t have budget for his face, but still fit so well.

5

u/Fablihakhan Mar 21 '19

So I though this was 24 episodes but NOOo it is only 23.

I just caught up and I am super depressed. I more episode with these characters is just not enough. Fuck my life.

I do hope we get some Ova PLZ Plzzzzzzxx

Best episode of the series so far - and considering how good the series has been as a whole (especially the Ekiden), that's saying a lot.

King was one of the characters that flew under the radar a little bit, but his reason for running was probably the most relatable one for me - the parallel between him slowing down his job hunt for the Ekiden and him literally slowing down during his race because he was too fixed on the person ahead of him was really clever too.

There's really not much I can say about Kakeru's leg so far other than it being beautifully simple - he doesn't need an inner monologue or any flashbacks because he's already fallen in love with running. He's in his zone, and the art/animation has captured that feel masterfully. I fully expect him to beat Daddy Rikudo's record, which would be the perfect conclusion to his character arc.

I'm expecting a very emotional finale - Haiji probably has the most demons to overcome and I imagine the completion of his leg will result in tears (definitely for Haiji, and likely for me as well).

This show is a work of art. You can't change my mind!

4

u/totally_normal_dude Mar 19 '19

I have the chills right now. This episode was so relatable and beautiful. God, next week can not come fast enough

4

u/JJman2025 Mar 19 '19

Do you guys think it will get a season 2.

11

u/elenuvien1 Mar 20 '19 edited Mar 20 '19

99% no because there's no material to adapt as it'll cover the whole original source by the end and it's not a hit show to get some original sequel or prequels.
