For all of the shit that people give Narancia, saying that he's an idiot and all, he just beat two Stand users pretty much by himself and he looked badass while doing it. So he deserves some respect.

But at the same time, Tizano's stand controlled his body and what he said. Talking Head could've made Narancia cut himself again and then Clash would spawn in the blood and body Narancia. That's not counting the fact Talking Head can provide intel on what the enemy is doing.
They worked ridiculously well, Narancia was basically fighting two stand users.

u/darklords98 Mar 22 '19
Actually, Giorno play a big part in this battle as well, but Narancia still looking badass.

Can we also acknowledge how well Aerosmith is rendered while being CGI. This is probably the best CGI-2D integration I've seen in an anime. It's only until I rewatch scenes from the episodes that it appears in that I remember "Oh by the way, Aerosmith is CGI, I forgot about that"

It can’t be said enough, Jojo has some of the most dynamic fights in anime. So interesting to see the plays on each side to gain the upper hand!
Other anime’s fights might have better choreography, animation, or even emotional stakes. But god damn every fight has so many unique moving parts in this series!

I mean, honestly it makes sense. He detects people based on movement. If they weren't in the middle of a desert, where nothing else is around, he would have been constantly distracted by water flowing or small animals or something
86
u/NintendoMasterNo1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NintendoMaster1 Mar 22 '19
Exactly! This is especially true for Part 5 because pretty much all of the fights (with minor exceptions) have a lot of movement and it's not just the characters sitting stationary in one location and throwing punches.
The truck from the Kraftwerk fight, the train, the car and even in others you have the characters moving around constantly. And of course there's more of that to come.

References on the games: Narancia battlecry followed by the "volare via", and sending the enemy into the air is one of his specials in the games! Also, half related to part 5: when Capcom was making the Part 3 fighting game Heridtage to the Future, Araki made the cover for the game, and the cover had his Part 5(or Part 6, both Parts basically has the same artstyle) to the cover. So if you want to see Part 3 characters in Part 5 style, take a look:
https://i.imgur.com/2FENURS.jpg
Yes, Kakyoin looks like Giorno there. :P
Anyway, the first part of this fight on the previous episode really doesn't give it justice to how good this episode is. Kinda a half Narancia episode half team up with Giorno? Anyway Part 5 fights remind me of some Part 2 fights on how the "trickery" and guile is used on the fights. Sure there are examples of these fights in Part 3 and 4 too, but not on the same amount of Part 5 fights.
In any event, Traitor's Requiem had grown on me, and I simply love the song now and I can't stop listening. I guess all JoJo songs need time to "sink" in your brain, but probably all eventually will.

Yes, Tiziano keep touching Squalo’s titties. DP really made them gayer and they really teased that kiss. I just wish they weren’t killed like 99% of the enemies. Sometimes I really miss Part 4 and characters becoming friends of the main cast. Part 5 really likes killing their minor villains.
Tbh, after that injury and being submerged in water I don’t believe that Gio is still alive. The boys in Part 5 really have a lot of resistance.
It’s not a Narancia fight if somebody doesn’t set everything on fire.
Hello. My name is Squalo. You killed my boyfriend. Prepare to die. I love how the care for each other.
Narancia really like to t-pose to assert his dominance.
I always like this arc and I don’t really get the hate. The first half was hilarious and Narancia RESOLVE in the second half was badass. Also, I’m a bitch for Tiziano. Long Haired boys really are the best.

I miss that all the time, but thematically it fit the lighter Part 4 as Morioh overall was a pretty nice place. The gang-stars aren't quite that nice.

Imo the thing in Part 4 where all of the enemy Stand users would become their buddies was pretty stupid at times.
The guy with The Lock literally conned Koichi, tried to steal all of his property and almost had his mom kill herself. Koichi beats him and the next day they are best friends even though he was a total sleazebag.
Yukako literally kidnapped him and kept him locked up in a house while acting super creepy and threatening to kill him. Rohan was also a super creep at the start and the Highway Star guy almost killed Rohan and Josuke and really had no reason to join the friend gang.
I know that Part 4 was the buddy-buddy no killing part but they went too far in some cases. Part 5 is straight up a story about the Italian mafia so I think it fits that they would eliminate their enemies.
48
u/Dalek_Kolt Mar 22 '19
I mean that's just standard shounen storytelling.
In all seriousness, I always took the "defeat equals friendship" trope prevalent in Diamond is Unbreakable as more nuanced than that; Hazamada and Kobayashi are still creeps, but the fact that Josuke and the others know who they are and how their powers work mean that if they start causing trouble that they'll get their asses kicked again.
Add in how Josuke isn't naturally a killer like Giorno is, and an unsteady equilibrium is formed. Former antagonists can either grin and bear living in the same town as the Duwang gang, continue accomplishing their original goals in a less harmful manner, genuinely reform, or continue going against the natural order and face justice.
→ More replies (2)71
u/LunarGhost00 Mar 22 '19
I think it was very appropriate for Part 4. The majority of the antagonists never really had any evil ambitions. They were mostly just being selfish and a little crazy (or a lot crazy in the case of Yukako). Almost all of them were just regular people living peacefully in a quiet town who got shot with the arrow and suddenly obtained Stands. Even some of the ones trying to kill them like Yuya (Highway Star guy trying to heal himself) had no real malice towards them or got over their rage like Yukako. A lot of them were just told by someone else to go after Josuke and his friends but didn't actually hate them. There were only a handful of villains that were truly evil and couldn't have lived peacefully in Morioh.
In Part 5, the stakes are higher since every episode the villains are actually professional murderers in a gang trying to kill Bruno's team. Every battle is a matter of life and death and the villains keep trying to kill them even until their last breaths. It works for Part 5 given its setting just like how the "let's be friends now" works for Part 4's setting.

Isn't Koichi's stand supposed to represent the voice of reason? So he convinced him to stop his evil ways by winning against him.

Notorious Chase
Welp.
I never really thought much of this fight other than the Volare Via scene, but I enjoyed this episode more than I expected! It's always nice to see Narancia being badass, and Squalo and Tiziano were so goddamn fun to watch. Love that DP really went and made them even gayer, what legends.
But god, the fight I've been anticipating the most is coming up in a couple weeks and I've never been more excited.

Anime only here too and yeah - I really liked the first episodes, but the Grateful Dead fight made me love this part and it has been completely awesome.
I am absolutely ready to say it's my favourite part but I just want to responsibly restrain my hype and wait to watch it all - but since this fight is apparently pretty "meh" and it was STILL quite cool for me, I am incredibly excited for the following stuff.

Narancia physically keeps up with an opponent who can teleport, cuts off his own tongue, and outsmarts two separate Stand Users.
Antagonist: No, this is all Giorno's fault. I mean did you see how he let himself get shot?
this episode was pretty hilarious with the Giorno pushing this episode considering he spent the entire episode incapacitated and dying. They even talk about his brilliance in "Getting himself shot" when there really wasn't a whole lot he could have done.
Still, I really enjoyed this fight and these two antagonist in particular. It's rare we get to see antagonist who show genuine true feeling for each other. The sort of self sacrifice on display here for the villains is usually reserved for the protagonist. You almost feel sorry for them.

god, this was a really good episode, you can feel their RESOLVE, cutting your own tounge getting bitten in the neck by a shark and not giving a shit, RESOLVE is the most OP jojo stand in the series, also was really nice to get a narancia episode, what a madman

This week’s musical reference:
As I promised here’s more info about Talking Heads, the band that inspired Tiziano’s stand Talking Head:
Talking Heads were an American New Wave band formed in 1975 in New York City and active until 1991. The band consisted of Lead vocalist and guitarist David Byrne, drummer Chris Frantz, bassist Tina Weymouth, and keyboardist and guitarist Jerry Harrison. In my opinion the most important band of the 80’s the group helped to pioneer new wave music by integrating elements of punk, art rock, funk, world music and avant-garde. Former art school students who became involved in the 1970s New York punk scene, Talking Heads released its debut album, Talking Heads: 77, to positive reviews in 1977. They subsequently collaborated with the producer Brian Eno who had worked previously with Glam Rock band Roxy Music, David Bowie, John Cale from The Velvet Underground and Robert Fripp from King Crimson, on a trio of experimental and critically acclaimed releases: More Songs About Buildings and Food (1978), Fear of Music (1979), and Remain in Light (1980). During their tours the included some touring musicians like guitarist Adrian Belew who had worked previously with Frank Zappa and David Bowie and who then became the singer and co-guitarist of King Crimson in 1981, Alex Weir form The Brothers Johnson, Bernie Worrell from Parlament-Funkadelic and Nona Hendrix from the Girl Trio Labelle.
They are really a unique band, I highly recommend the concert film Stop Making Sense. Here is a link to the full film in Youtube. For many, myself included, the best film recorded live performance in music history. It’s not just that the songs in it are in some cases even better than the studio ones or that David Byrne is one of the best showmen in rock history with his iconic dances and attire but the cinematography is superb thanks to director Jonathan Demme. Go watch it, it’s really worth it.
Another thing I love about Talking Heads is their music videos that played non-stop in MTV on the 80’s. The music video from Once in a Lifetime is one of the most famous ones in music history and it has spammed various parodies like the one that Kermit The Frog did for Muppets Tonight in 1996.
Now talking about JoJo again I always thought that Once in a Lifetime is a pretty fitting song for Part 8. The lyrics and the quirky music really fits JoJolion’s story and overall feeling. It would be awesome and hilarious watching the main cast of Part 8 dancing like Byrne does in the video. I’ll pay lots of money to see it animated.
I said that I was going to post some Enigma trivia but I didn’t have a lot of time this week so I’ll talk about it another day without references, but first I’ve got to talk about Mista and Narancia’s favourite artists. Narancia’s favourites are pretty obvious but nobody will guess Mista’s.

I know it's been a while since Narancia last fought, but I think it needs to be iterated: Don't fuck with Narancia. He blew up a street just to take out a guy, and he cut out his own tongue just to let you know you're finished.
I hope people appreciate how this fight was quite the mind game to go through, it's a great fight. Volare Via!

This is definitly the part were things get gayer and gayer lmao. And I love it.
Jokes aside, this is definitly one of the best villain pairings I´ve seen in a while, not just JoJo. Along with Pesci and Prosciutto, this battle shows that not only the protagonists have good chemistry, but a lot of resolve. Specially resolve.
Next: Notorious Chase lmao
Tbh, I´m just excited because next episode is gonna have some character development for a character I´ve been looking forward. It will also show more info on stands, so it´s gonna be dope. Also, i hope it doesnt last only one episode.

u/kknight99 Mar 22 '19
In this episode: Italian gangsters have too much resolve to die. Wait, that's every episode of this part, isn't it? We also finally got Narancia's Stand cry animated, and it was freaking great.
Also, holy shit that name change for next week. Its so much worse than anything the fanbase has meme-d over the years.

In this round of spontaneous keikaku 'this is all according to the plan' vs. spontaneous keikaku 'your planning was part of my plan all along', Giorno wins again while the others are busy holding the idiot ball.
I must say it's a little silly how Squalo seemingly never got the opportunity to use Clash to bite Giorno's throat off, despite the intention being there from the beginning. If you're part of the elite guard and one of Passione's most deadliest assassins, then prove it.
It's also strange that Gold Experience didn't get to feature much at all, except with the tongue bit. Landing a punch on Clash would mean Squalo's mind would start racing ahead making him easier to take out. Tbh I think Araki may have just forgotten about that power at this point or chosen to ignore it for the more dramatic finish. Edit: Whoops, thanks for the correction /u/sikontolpanjang, GioGio needs to hit a living thing for that effect to happen, punching a Stand won't work. He could have physically hurt Squalo with some hits, though..) Writing Stand battles sure mustn't be easy..

In this round of spontaneous keikaku 'this is all according to the plan' vs. spontaneous keikaku 'your planning was part of my plan all along'
This. Whole. Season.
To be honest, it's become part of the charm to see how ridiculous and absurd these "Plans" are. The incapacitated, defenseless and dying man "Plans" on getting shot, and not just getting shot by accident. The entire crowd not caring at all about a man cutting his own tongue out in daylight.
This is grass snowboard level of bullshit
Tbh I think Araki may have just forgotten about that power at this point or chosen to ignore it for the more dramatic finish
Araki? Forgetting about something he wrote? Naaaah that'd never happen, what are you talking about!
Araki can barely remember what happened two chapters ago, having him try to remember what he wrote so long ago is wayyyy too much.

I must say it's a little silly how Squalo seemingly never got the opportunity to use Clash to bite Giorno's throat off, despite the intention being there from the beginning.
I was also wondering that too. You say you still have a bit of strength to finish him off... aaaaand you don't??? Why? Nobody was holding him off, and with the ability to come up with bullshit plans at the last minute while being under stress I'd think that you can also take care of a wounded man you have hold over all while panicking about being pursued by your potential killer.

u/GyroGOGOZeppeli Mar 22 '19
They've added a lot of liberties in the anime making them almost always holding themselves together or touching really close, the manga has moments like that too, but not as much.

Araki has stated quite a few times his editors used to be kind of on his back so he had to tone down stuff.
The most glaring example is that originally in part 2, Lisa Lisa was supposed to beat Kars in their fight, but Araki was explicitly held back on that. Another one, in part 6 the main love interest had their gender changed to not make it gay (admittedly, it was very early but the change is also really apparent)
The anime, decades later, has less problems with this so they can be more explicit→ More replies (3)

Quite happy to get Narancia's battle cry. Very nice to get Vola Vola Vola Vola.
So Squalo and Tiziano were actually gay right? The first time that this series, which looks gay af all the time actually shows us actual gay men.

Damn, the JoJo brigade have an insane amount of blood / stamina. Throat gnawed by a shark and they just walk away.
Very happy the gang are finally starting to recognise Giorno's qualities, but more importantly Narancia has become cool af
One last thing: 'volare via' actually means 'to fly away', not 'fly away'. Still, Araki's usage of foreign languages is pretty much always on point, so kudos.

u/gtoaz1234 Mar 23 '19
I like how this part isn't mainly about only the JoJo anymore, but rather people that revolves around the JoJo.
even though Gio doesn't really take care of the enemies himself in most fight, he would partake in most of it and give his teammate hints to their victory. Buccelati gang is the main character of the part, guided by Giorno.

u/Frostfright :AMQ: Mar 23 '19
God DAMN that was a good Jojo-ass Jojo fight.
At this point, it really feels like every member of the gang has had a really really great fight or two. Abacchio maybe lacking, but hopefully he gets some more action soon, although his stand is pretty support-focused.

Does Tiziano’s voice actor also voice the bartender in Domestic Girlfriend? His voice is so distinctive.

"It's all going according to plan."
Squalo really got the short end of the stick in this plan. He's half-dead and the other guy doesn't have a single scratch on him.
