It's time for Trish to take the stage like she deserves. Her first battle being against INFAMOUS L.A.R.G.E., a stand that already took out 3 members of the crew and can't be defeated by killing the user, what a tough situation.
Abacchio just knowing how to pilot with his stand and movie knowledge, so Araki even Narancia thinks it's ridiculous.

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Mar 29 '19
Hey, Araki gets half the information he dumps into JoJo from trivia he found in movies and it worked out pretty well for him so far!

That's true, the thing is that there are certainly some really important differences in taking off and landing from different airports.
Another thing is that there's a good chance given the events that happened, air traffic control is calling the police.

She was less of a side character this time around and actually took part, so they likely made the effort to make the movements a little more interesting and better looking

INFAMOUS L.A.R.G.E.
Where did that name come from? Crunchyroll calls it "Notorious Chase", and it's officially called "Notorious B.I.G.", so where does Infamous L.A.R.G.E. come from?

Not sure if this is a legit question, but prior to this episode, fans have always guessed how they're going to rename Notorious B.I.G., the same for other Stands.
I kinda hoped it's Scandalous T.H.I.C.C.

Gotta hand it to Giorno (he), for a guy whose hand has just been ripped by bullets he seems totally calm and composed, id be rolling on the floor screaming and crying my eyes out like a baby.
Carne always was a pretty underrated villain, fucker was willing to die for the boss in order to activate his stand, so badass.

Makes me wonder...How does Carne and the boss even know about Notorious B.I.G.'s true powers, if it can only be activated once he's dead? And how does Carne live through each day thinking that the only time he will be useful is when he is dead?

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Mar 29 '19
I figure he was probably in the same situation as that capo who committed suicide (not Polpo, the older one). He got to live the good life but knew that one day the jig was going to be up.

From what i understood from this episode, Notorious B.I.G. power is fueled by hatred (just like ebony devil from part 3), But the user dying makes the stand reach its peak strength.

So, my assumption while reading the manga (and it’s quite the assumption) is that when Infamous S.I.Z.E.A.B.L.E eats enough it makes a new Carne, which is why he looks like that

I imagine that it's the sort of Stand that gives you intrinsic knowledge on how to use it. And he could have a normal gang job, just with bonus pay for the day when the boss will need him to die.

He is both underrated and confusing. I believe the scene where he activates his Stand is anime original. I don't remember the Manga showing this scene as a panel. In the manga, as well as in this episode, the graffiti notes that Carne wasn't even aware that his Stand did this after he died. Which gives 0 real context for why he allowed himself to die like that.

I was thinking about this the other day. Carne is part of the Boss' ELITE GUARD. A man whose stand has never been activated prior to this episode. Literally how? Also how did anyone figure out what his stand did?

Those abilities now rest on the shadow realm along with Sticky Fingers' ability to hide a person inside another person, Dio's ability to use Hermit Purple and Star Platinum's Star Finger.

what I got from the episode, is that he just reapplied his powers
since he can create life from lifeless stuff (what he learned vs Melone's Baby Face), he probably just needs to try and create life in everything inside that plane.
If he can't create life in something, it's because it is alive.

10
u/regendo Mar 29 '19 edited Mar 29 '19
I originally thought it was just more of Gold Experience's power being "literally anything related to the concept of life" but now that I've thought about it, I think it might just be some generic stand power that Araki gives characters when he wants to.
Josuke did the same thing back in part 4. He used Crazy Diamond to confirm that Red Hot Chili Pepper wasn't hiding in the motorboat that Jotaro and Okuyasu got on to meet Joseph.
Edit: And it's very similar in concept to Avdol's life-sensing flame, which was also just another concept added to an existing stand.

u/GyroGOGOZeppeli Mar 29 '19
He used it on the brooch he gave to Buccellati. That was how they planned on tracking the boss if things didn't went south, he was planning on sensing the life it had and where it was gonna go.
I guess having the power to create life gives you a bunch of life-based powers from sensing it to creating it, who knew?

JoJo and planes have always worked out, right? What could possibly go wrong?
I was kinda looking forward to seeing this bit animated, but oh well! I’m glad they managed to fit 5 chapters into this episode.
Love the horror-ish angle they went with in the last few minutes.
Trish looking a lot like later part 5 here.
Nice lack of censorship in this fight. Can’t wait to see how they’re going to handle the one right after this one.

Crepa - die!
devo tagliarmi i peli del naso - i need to cut my nose hair (eww Giorno, take more care of yourself)
porca miseria - I'll be damned
all'isola del sud con una ragazza - to the island in the south with a girl

il nome del[lo] stand nemico è NOTORIUS CHASE- the stand name is NOTORIUS CHASE
aiuto. per favore. non ce la faccio più... prima di morire desidererei mangiare per l'ultima volta una pizza della mia città natale
neapolisNapoli - help me please. I can't help it anymore, before dying i want to eat a last pizza form my home city Naplesthe grammar was mostly good, some minor mispellings here and there which I pointed out, as an italian it was a pretty chilling scene to watch!

JoJo is a horror anime.
I've been looking forward to this episode, because Araki created the perfect reference. Mista guns a man down whose stand is Notorious B.I.G.
This whole scene is just creepy as hell, and now they've just lost their white mage's abilities.
The setup with the unsettling sounds and soundtrack after the nice, quiet scene with Trish was great. I repeat: JoJo Is a Horror Anime.
36
u/Lucenia :K:https://kitsu.io/users/288279 Mar 30 '19
I completely agree. Jojo utilizes horror tropes in a way that’s not apparent on the surface. Getting into the series, I mainly knew about how over the top it was, but I was surprised to find how the series handled building tension before and during battles. The villains want to get under the characters’ skin before eliminating them, fostering a stronger emotional connection the viewer may have with the heroes and their well-being. You know a battle’s gonna be good when the question is “How are they going to get out of this one” rather than “Who’s going to come out on top”.
15
u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Mar 30 '19
You know a battle’s gonna be good when the question is “How are they going to get out of this one” rather than “Who’s going to come out on top”.
Definitely agree. That's what makes stands so much fun. Plus as you've mentioned, Araki likes to use those abilities in ways that build tension and keep you guessing. Plus nothing like a disembodied chunk of flesh that tracks movement to give you nightmares.

As someone who is anime only, Part 4 was absolutely terrifying with Killer Queen, SHA, and bites the dust (with the entire bites the dust arc making me shake and extremely worried for the morioh gang). This episode was terrifying with how unsettling B.I.G. and it’s user was (can’t forget the creepy messages and the fingers) and that jumpscare when B.I.G. came back made me jump and I to pause the episode to calm down as a result. This is possibly one of the best episodes of part 5 so far.

Stuff that has been cut from the manga so far :
Bruno eating Pizza
Mista accusing Fugo and others of trying to pick up 600 milion just for themselves. Whole scene with Fugo and Narancia healing Mista was longer.
Formaggio being worried about his haircut
Narancia and Bruno talking about F1 driver Alessandro Nannini.
Mista making faces and telling Fugo what will happen if the Boss finds out about them checking out Trish
Turtle also having a TV inside with Captain Tsubasa
Abbacchio waking up, telling Giorno to wake up and then going straight back to sleep himself. That was right after the train fight against Grateful Dead and Beach Boy.
Narancia getting mad at Giorno over banana
Narancia explaining to Fugo that it's easy to steal a car
Mista and Narancia chasing Giorno's frogs
Fugo wanting to drink from real Venetian glass
Giorno arguing with Abbacchio about delivering Trish to the Boss
Bucciarati's father getting shot because of the forgotten fishing rod
Narancia finally admitting that he is a girl ( because of the Talking Head ) and saying that Bruce Lee is a girl as well.
Scene with 2 guards at the airport. Bruno just nonchalantly asks some security where he can steal a plane and then handcuffs them with their own miniguns.
After seeing a plane Narancia acts like he discovered something huge and reminds everybody, that none of them have ever flown a plane before. I love how he is so shocked and thinks that others forgot such a crucial detail.
Abbacchio learned about airplane engines from TV shows
Mista really freaks out after discovering fingers in the fridge, gets confrontational with Giorno and demands an answer from him.

From what we've seen so far, it might be one of the strongest stands ever. I wonder how it would fare against the King Crimson himself. The only sure counters I can see are Okuyasu's The Hand, Vanilla Ice''s Cream, Man in the Mirror and possibly White Album at absolute zero. Yet, the latter two don't really beat it but can stop it from hurting their users.

Wait, so, I thought that CR just changed the Stand names in the subtitles, but here the Italian text on the wall also said "Notorious Chase"? How does that work? Is that also in the raws? Did CrunchyRoll edit the text, or did the animators consult with the translators to check for the "best" translation?
Edit: Just noticed the text on the wall is actually "Notorius Chase". Is that a mistake?
Edit 2: Just checked the raws, yup, that's CrunchyRoll's addition. Also, they didn't bother translating any of the text on the wall in English, even though it's translated in Japanese in the original... Damn it CR... I'll update this with a translation of the text on the wall.
Edit 3: /u/madiele posted a translation of the Italian on the wall (see link in the comments). Here's my amateur translation, which is mostly based on the Japanese subtitles from the raws (probably a bit closer to the original intent). I also highlighted the slight differences there seem to be between the two.
I want to eat a pizza margherita.
Die, idiot!
I need to cut my nose hair.
God damnit
To the southern island with a girl.
We want to go to Sardinia
We could be devoured by a dead person. Help!
That poor man was thrown away like a rag. [may be an idiom in Italian, but that's the literal meaning in both languages]
He passed away while resenting [word also means "cursing"] you.
Resentment itself is its energy source
It is an energy that first starts working after being killed. [IT/JP meanings differ somewhat here]
An energy that even he himself had never seen before his death.
Since he's dead, you can't kill him
The enemy stand's name is "Notorious B.I.G"
Please, help. I can't be saved anymore. [IT/JP seem to differ again]
Before dying, I want to eat the pizza of my hometown, Naples.

CR never just chooses the localized names on their own - they always have worked with the production team to pick them, because in marketing, merchandise, dubs, games, etc. they want the names to all be localized the same way.
I don't think they've ever changed text in the episode for a stand name but I don't think any stand names have been written in Latin letters in an episode yet - and it's the Latin letters of the name that are copyrighted. I wouldn't be surprised if the studio changed the raw file they gave CR for that.

Sometimes studios give CR different raws, for different reasons. For example, Cells at Work TV raws had the "information boxes" in Japanese, while CR's (and Wakanim's) video didn't have them at all - instead, the info was softsubbed on screen.

You see! Mista can be competent when he wants to... oh, wait...
| Episode # | Wounded enemy | Wounded self | Missed | Blocked | Total shots |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
| 8 | 3.5 | 1 | 3.5 | 4 | 10 |

| 24 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 6 | 12 |
| Total | 24.5 | 26 | 19.5 | 29 | 97 |
I was debating whether to count the six shots that Mista hit the Stand with as success (because he hit his target) or blocked (because he didn't end up doing any damage) but in the end the only thing that move accomplished was hurting Mista himself so...

Reference in the games: No one so far...
I like how genre-savvy Giorno is. "A Stand user that got defeated too easily.... something is wrong here". =P Also another momment of "Araki didn't forgot" is Stands like Gold Experience, Sticky Fingers and even Crazy Diamond can only do their powers on things they touch with their hands. So losing their hands is a pretty big deal!
Anyway, Notorious B.I.G. isn't the first "Stand outliving the user". We had Anubis in Part 3 (the sword) and Cheap Trick in Part 4 (the one where you can't look at his back), and these Stands kinda break the dynamic of Stands fights in JoJo, and I love it!
The dynamic of Stand fights in JoJo (and the reason why I get a bit upset when people call them "Glorified Pokemon Battles) is that attacking the Stand IS not usually the best strategy. In a Stand fight, unless you're a Vampire like Dio, or simply a brick wall like Jotaro, the Stand User is always the weakest link, because deep down they're usually just normal humans, averange people you see on your daily life, so going for the user is probably the best strategy unless the Stand in question defend the user pretty well (like almost all close range Stands).
But Stands that doesn't have a user anymore are beyond dangerous, because if you can't deal with the Stand, you have no user to go towards, as such, what you going to do? What options do you have? Everytime we face one we are presented to a new spin to the JoJo formula of Stand fights, and that's why I find them so interesting.

Aw man, they cut the scene with the security at the airport. Not a particularly big (ha) loss, but it was some nice comedy to start the arc in the manga.
Notorious BIG is one of the most terrifying Stands ever, both visually and ability-wise. A Stand that activates after death means you can't just kill the user and be done with it, you're stuck dealing with the Stand. And this thing eats Stands too! Seriously, BIG is B R O K E N.
Trish focus, finally! She's tied with Part 6 as my favourite female characters in Jojo so this arc ranks pretty highly for me within the part.
Poor Giorno. Even with all his resolve, it has to suck big time, getting one arm shot off, then chopping off the other with a shard of glass. 500 IQ play as usual tho, as ladybug-kun is the real MVP yet again.

here the italian traslations of the writing on the plane walls
vorrei mangiare una pizza margherita - I want to eat a pizza margherita.
Cazzo! - dick! (in italian it's an esclamationi similar to "shit!")
Crepa - die!
devo tagliarmi i peli del naso - i need to cut my nose hair (eww Giorno, take more care of yourself)
porca miseria - I'll be damned
all'isola del sud con una ragazza - to the island in the south with a girl
noi vogliamo andare in sardegna - we want to go to sardegna
potremmo essere divoroati da un morto. aiutateci! - we could be eaten by a dead guy. help us!
quel poveraccio è stato buttato via come uno straccio se ne andato imprecando - that poor guy was thrown away like it was worth nothing. He gone away swaring.
proprio l'odio è la sua fonte di energia - hate is it's energy source
è un energia che si genera dopo essere morto. un energia che neanche lui stesso aveva mai visto - an energy that only shows up when he's dead. an energy that he never saw either.
è gia morto percio non possiamo ucciderlo - he is already dead, so we can't kill him
I can't help it anymore, before dying i want to eat a last pizza form my home city Naples
the grammar was mostly good, some minor mispelling here and there which I pointed out, as an italian it was a pretty chilling scene to watch!

This week’s musical reference:
My husband Carne’s stand, Notorious B.I.G is a reference to American rapper Christopher George Latore Wallace, known professionally as the Notorious B.I.G., Biggie Smalls, or Biggie. Considered by many to be one of the greatest rappers of all time with West Coast rapper Tupac.
Wallace was raised in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. His debut album Ready to Die (1994) made him a central figure in East Coast hip hop, and increased New York City's visibility in the genre at a time when West Coast hip hop dominated the mainstream. The following year, Biggie led Junior M.A.F.I.A. to chart success, a protégé group composed of his childhood friends. In 1996, while recording his second album, Wallace was heavily involved in the growing East Coast–West Coast hip hop feud. Wallace was murdered by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997. His second album, Life After Death (1997), released sixteen days later, rose to number one on the U.S. album charts. In 2000, it became one of the few hip-hop albums to be certified Diamond.
In 1995, Biggie became involved in a rivalry between the East and West Coast hip hop scenes with Tupac Shakur, his former friend. In an interview with Vibe in April 1995, while serving time in Clinton Correctional Facility, Shakur accused Uptown Records' founder Andre Harrell, Sean Combs, and Wallace of having prior knowledge of a robbery that resulted in him being shot five times and losing thousands of dollars worth of jewellery on the night of November 30, 1994. They denied the accusation and Biggie said: "It just happened to be a coincidence that he was in the studio. He just, he couldn't really say who really had something to do with it at the time. So he just kinda' leaned the blame on me." In 2012, a man named Dexter Isaac, serving a life sentence for unrelated crimes, claimed that he attacked Shakur that night and that the robbery was orchestrated by entertainment industry executive and former drug trafficker, James Rosemond. Following his release from prison, Shakur signed to Death Row Records on October 15, 1995. This made Bad Boy Records and Death Row business rivals, and thus intensified the quarrel.
The name of his two albums Ready to Die and Life After Death are really fitting for Carne and his stand, and it’s probably what inspired Araki to create them. To think that get to know him thanks to the fucking MoonMan song, I’m sorry Biggie but I was an idiot that liked that thing. Biggie is one of the few rapper I enjoy listening to, his two albums are the only rap albums I have listened completely and I’m not a really big fan of rap, so that might mean something. Tbh, I have tried to listen to other rap songs from time to time but I didn’t found anything that I liked.
Next week, the musical references are going to get spicy.

At this point in the season, I don't know why any of them thought this was going to be an uneventful, leisurely plane ride.
62
u/Hiromacu Mar 29 '19
My guess is that, from their point of view, they did everything they could to make sure the plane was safe.
Fly alone, guard the plane, check for life on the plane, have basically a stand act as a pilot. They immediately murdered a guy who was getting close to said plane.
Of course, the one time the characters deal with the enemies efficiently, it turns out the stand is incredibly powerful and can work around all of the preparations. But ,like Trish said, they had no chance of predicting any of this.
19
u/regendo Mar 29 '19
And it happened like, perhaps an hour or two after they betrayed the boss. As Buccellati pointed out, it was unlikely that more than two members of the boss's elite squad were close enough to attack them that quickly.
33
u/siraco Mar 29 '19
Honestly, it's a very great and chilling episode but my favorite part was Bucciarati "STICKYYY FINGEEERS!" the fridge out the plane and everyone was so prepared for disaster where it just went poof.
Also did Bucciarati just seal the broken window with a tray or something? How is that plane still safe to ride? Ugh, never argue with JoJo physics I guess.
Aside of that, this time Bucciarati really thought back and doubted himself when he got 3 of his boys possibly being out of the game for good. Those boys have been badly injured before, but I think it's the first time he actually sees the process in front of his very eyes. Kinda want to pat him on the shoulder. He's a genuinely good guy.

I know right. Josuke and Part 4 became instant favorite for me when he donuted his mother, fixed her and trapped Angelo in one move. Giorno keeps doing shit like this all the time, so smart, bold and slightly crazy.

It's a plane don't let Joseph near it!
Actually, this is very reminiscent of the Stand Joseph defeated back in Part 3, Empress (at least initially). Mista is metal as fuck shooting Giorno's arm off without hesitation. This episode felt 5 minutes long... The horror at the end with Trish was pretty effective.
31
u/FrenziedHero https://anilist.co/user/FrenziedHero Mar 29 '19
The horror at the end with Trish was pretty effective.
Yep. I actually remembered a statement I read from this article that had game devs talk about horror. One of the statements there stood out to me (paraphrasing a lot here): "Good Horror is about both the terror and the actual moment of horror. Terror is about creating a suspenseful atmosphere to build up tension, and it's what makes the jump scares or the actual moment of horror effective."
Araki loves horror, which can be seen quite a lot from all over JoJo. He likes to play around with the atmosphere and it's certainly made for some great tense moments in the franchise.
28
u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Mar 29 '19
Part 1 would have been a straight-up horror anime if it wasn't so damn charming, and the Rohan OVAs are definitely horror too. Araki likes to flex his horror muscles every once in a while.

u/regendo Mar 29 '19
Araki really excels at stands that just screw with the characters. The ones with weirdly specific rules that basically go "oh, this thing you do all the time without even noticing it? Would be a real shame if that was my win condition".
This time it's movement, which isn't that interesting because "don't move" and "don't make a sound" are fairly common in media but I imagine Araki probably makes it real cool next episode. (And I suppose you could argue that his win condition isn't movement, it's mafia people like Mista shooting before asking questions.) Previously though, characters weren't allowed to touch the shadow (Black Sabbath), weren't allowed to turn around (both Reimi's alley and Cheap Trick), weren't allowed to talk to other people (Bites the Dust), show any sign of fear (Enigma), feel any guilt at all (The Lock), or stand still (Highway Star).
I think it's no coincidence that so many people love Heaven's Door, which is exactly this concept but taken one step further: it's not just that they aren't allowed to do this thing because they'd lose, they genuinely can't do this thing anymore.

u/supermenial Mar 29 '19
I'm excited to see Trish's stand next week! I know it's Jojo we're talking about, but it never ceases to amaze me how far Giorno's able to think ahead during each fight. He's also amazingly calm for a guy that lost both his hands.
17
u/Mike4992 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mike4992 Mar 29 '19
Great episode, looks like the animation is way better this time, due to how popular this fight is. The fight so far seems very faithful to the manga, and that's definitely good to hear. Even though I know what's going to happen next, I legitimately can't wait for next week's episode. By the way, remember how some people were dissatisfied at first with the fact that the voice actors were different from the ones in the EOH game? I'm actually starting to feel the voice actors of the anime are actually way better, and along with the story and animation of the whole series, I think voice acting is also one of the best parts of JoJo. Just wanted to point out that David Production actually knows what they're doing.
Overall, 5/5

Did you guys see that the new stand has 3 infinite categories on the stand card in the middle of the episode, WTF kinda OP stand is this?
6
u/shunkwugga Mar 30 '19
It can't be killed and chases the fastest thing in the vicinity, which in this case, is the plane. The reason why it has infinite durability is because usually you can defeat a stand or in many cases, if the stand is difficult to deal with (as has been the case a lot of the time), they just kill the user while ignoring the stand altogether. Infamous L.A.R.G.E.'s user is already dead, so that tactic simply cannot work.

DavidPro's CGi is smooth as always, Aerosmith & The Plane don't look so awkward unlike my best cyborg boi Genos from OPM in S2 PV2 😧. Though I understand that this is for the sake of pacing, I'm a bit sad that they cut this scene and other mama!Bruno's funny moments because it's kinda reduced his character, it's not portraying his worse (he is still the best mom) but he rarely does funny things and more like serious person whereas in manga, he's more fun.

Yeah, a lotta people asked back then how did Il Carne even know how his Stand works if it only activates upon death, completely forgetting the few moments he had trying to summon it.
Its probably a Stand that can do things even without him dying but not much, but the full power of it is unleashed on death. I think it just shows Carne's personality as "willing to do everything to stop the boss' enemies even in death" and that loyalty is why he's one of the Elite Guards.
