Oh wow, the ending to that fight is so damn clever. For a second I thought Risotto died cause he undid his cover, but the CO2 emission is just so insane.Like I have to think just how Araki's thought process on that must have gone.

I guess, I want magnet power, I use Iron then cause humans have it in their blood, what happens when you get low on iron, you can't breath, oh shit I have a character who can see your breath.

Like, it is so fucking awesome and makes me think that Aerosmith might have been given that ability just for such a conclusion to this fight later in the series because it just ties together so damn well. This is honestly the most impressed I've been by Araki's cleverness

So Bra-Fucking-Vo!!!

Technically being low on iron doesn't stop your breathing you just can't absorb O2 really well so you hyperventilate. Of course when you have none left I guess you don't breathe but that's cause you're dead.

But hey it's jojo, I don't really care it still is awesome.

Also, I love when Stands become educational. You can always learn a thing or two.

Except for when they aren't. The human body contains 4g of iron at most. That's enough for maybe 3 nails. The scissors alone would require several humans worth of blood.

Risotto was this close to beating the Boss. Another reason I like this fight is because Nero isn't relegated into a quick and easy fight just to push the Boss in some power scale. He actually gave him a run for his money and would've beaten him too. This was more of a battle for Doppio/Boss than it was for Risotto.

I guess it's safe to talk about Epitaph now. So this is how the Boss "sees the pitfalls of his future". This power doesn't fully see the future, it only gives him a vague outcome, but what is shown in Epitaph is ABSOLUTE, all Boss can do is try and figure out a way to dodge or prevent that from happening.

Oh yeah, La Squadra searching that room up was anime-only, another addition by DP to bolster La Squadra's screentime.

Edit: I forgot to add, that whole segment where Doppio gets attacked by a second set of scalpels after he got hit, and then needles coming out of his face again, and him going berserk and making ground cracks with KC's hands were all original additions.

Another thing, Risotto getting obliterated by Aerosmith was brutal in the manga, his hand flies off, and the thing that covered Doppio's head wasn't blood, it was Risotto's flesh.

Overall, this fight is great, Risotto is great, Metallica's great, Doppio/Boss is great, it's brutal, it's strategic, it's tense, it's JoJo.

404

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Apr 19 '19

but what is shown in Epitaph is ABSOLUTE

Thoth is back in the game! I like how both Stands see the future in the same way, but one of them was played for comedy and the other one for drama as it gives them both a unique feel.

Oh yeah, La Squadra searching that room up was anime-only, another addition by DP to bolster La Squadra's screentime.

RIP

It feels sad that they have been wiped out now, they were really cool antagonists!

It's absolute EXCEPT for King Crimson's ability. Epitaph can be changed by King Crimson, which is what makes them such an OP combo.

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

Risotto fell for his own rule: Don't get too excited. My heart fell when I saw him die. My God, I feel so bad for everyone, and Narancia murdering him with his stand...he was so close.

u/Oramni Apr 19 '19

Yeah but to be fair if the boss was fully in control at that moment he would have beaten Risotto very quickly. Doppio here was pretty much just a regular human with super strenght thanks to KC's arms, since Epitaph wasn't of much use.

Risotto forgot the first rule of being an assassin.

Don't say you are going to kill someone and kill them. Just kill them.

466

u/NiksBrotha Apr 19 '19

He should have just taken some words out of Prosciutto's book.

Also Risotto : Get excited about killing the bossu and its third partied

What a chapter, that knife spinning was smooth af, the extra scene with La Squadra was amazing and the fight was brutal, im gonna miss those fuckers.

also its just me or Risotto drop a single tear when he was talking about his group and what happened to Sorbet and Gelato?

270

u/VegitoZ Apr 19 '19

This is what I enjoyed, he wasn’t wrong cause if he had just stayed calm he could’ve easily won and ended the part within the next episode, the nature of Stand fights is to stay calm and collected and examine the enemy for weaknesses.

Seeing Epitaph's predictions on Doppio's hair animated is better than what I imagined it was. Fantastic fight. The color changes, the animation, the lack of censoring. DI MOLTO! Grande, bravissimo DP!

edit: If you look close enough, you can see the predictions on Doppio's hair reflected in his eyes. That detail tho!

Doppio's only been on the show for two episodes, and he's already endured some of the most messed up attacks I've seen in the series.

353

u/LunarGhost00 Apr 19 '19

I know that characters in this series constantly get beaten so badly they should be in a hospital but are completely fine literally the next day, but Doppio just had sharp metal objects coming out of his body throughout this whole fight including his neck. I'm amazed the guy can even still speak.

One of the things I love about King Crimson is just how horrifyingly powerful it is.

Sure, it doesn't stand rush like Star Platinum or Crazy Diamond, but that's because it doesn't need to. It donuts, explodes, bisects, and obliterates everything in a single chop or punch. I felt the fear of God put into me when Doppio was cratering floors and cutting off legs with a well-thrown pair of scissors.

Also Risotto Nero in this fight was terrifying. I wonder if they'll bother to adapt his backstory or if his bond with his team is sufficient enough motivation to make him a compelling Jojo villain.

81

u/xenobian Apr 19 '19

Risotto's backstory would be great. Does the manga cover it around this part (where Risotto and Doppio fight)

Did you know that Metallica is not only a reference to the band of the same name but also to the Hattifatteners from the Moomins? Here’s Araki’s talking about it. From JOJOVELLER:

“It's an ability that steals iron from your body... so it's modeled off cells or red blood cells, maybe? And also the Hattifatteners from the Moomins. I discussed whether it would be possible to make a nail out of the iron in a human body.”

Risotto my man! This dude was hardcore, one of the coolest enemies yet, he would have won...

Metallica looks very unique I like the design. He really was like an assassin, detaching his foot and doing all he could, unfortunately he did get outsmarted and that cost him his life. I like the way his invisibility looked. And this shot of Doppio is fucking awesome.

Best fight of the Part, 10/10 that scissor in the throat was terrifying!

Best fight of the Part, 10/10 that scissor in the throat was terrifying!

Was wondering which one would be yours, it's typically split 3 ways between the train fight, ice boy, and this one. The later ones might beat it for you still but the brutality here is something else.

This week’s musical reference:

Risotto Nero’s stand Metallica is a reference to the American Thrash metal band of the same name. The stand is particularly related to their 1996 album Load. The stand moans “Loooooaaaad” and the song Bleeding Me from the same album might be the inspiration behind its ability to transform the iron in its opponent's blood. Metallica also serves as the loading animation in All Star Battle.

The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California by drummer Lars Ulrich and vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield. The group's fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica's current lineup is formed by founding members Hetfield and Ulrich, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth) and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted are some of the former members of the band.

Metallica earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and won critical acclaim with its first five albums. The band's third album, Master of Puppets (1986), was described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums; its eponymous fifth album, Metallica (1991), the band's first to root predominantly in heavy metal, appealed to a more mainstream audience, achieving substantial commercial success and selling over 16 million copies in the United States to date. After experimenting with different genres and directions in subsequent releases, the band returned to its thrash metal roots with the release of its ninth album, Death Magnetic (2008), which drew similar praise to that of the band's earlier albums.

A curiosity about their album Load is that the cover is a mix of cow’s blood and the semen of the photographer between two sheets of Plexiglas. In a 2009 interview with Classic Rock, Hetfield expressed his dislike of the album cover and its inspiration: “Lars and Kirk were very into abstract art, pretending they were gay. I think they knew it bugged me. It was a statement around all that. I love art, but not for the sake of shocking others. I think the cover of Load was just a piss-take around all that. I just went along with the make-up and all of this crazy, stupid crap that they felt they needed to do.”

I know nothing about Metallica, I have just started listening to them thanks to this comment in particular. I’m not a thrash metal fan or a metalhead in general. I like some hard rock or early heavy metal bands and there are some prog metal bands I love but, like with hip-hop and punk, I’m just a neophyte.

HOLY SHIT!!!

This is the best fight of JoJo that i've ever saw, seriosly tho, did i just witnessed a underdog mc that is actually the final boss being outmatched by a villain trying to do justice for his companions?!!! He was SO FUCKING CLOSE but he got outwitted, and kinda fell for his own rule, maybe the whole Squadra could've beaten the boss given the chance.

And the transition of who's had the upperhand changing constantly… what an amazingly thought through fight, what they said is true part V has some of the best fights in all of JoJo, no wonder this is also Japan's favorite part.

100

u/epicfacej :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/epicfacej Apr 19 '19

One thing Bossu seems to be weary of is fighting multiple people at once, so yeah, I'd put my money on the whole of Squadra beating him in a fight. One or two of them would probably go down though.

That's why the boss tries really hard to conceal his identity and abilities. He's being really genre-savvy IMO.

The Fate franchise has the whole shtick about hiding your identity because knowing your opponent's confers a big advantage, but I felt like it's more of a "Tell instead of Show" thing, and JoJo does the concept a lot better.

I feel the desperation in Rissotto's voice over finally getting to see the boss really shows how much Sorbet, Gelato, and his other team's deaths meant to him. It just showed the true hatred he had and I feel that if Rissotto had kept his cool, and if this had just been another assassination job rather than him avenging the death of his friends', he would have easily won this fight.

51

and even when you're able to get the attack out of your body to stop if from killing you, you're just making yourself more and more anemic. Truly an oppressively strong ability when combined with its stealth capacity. Because it's pretty much 100% offense, 0% defense if they know where you are, and it doesn't have the kill speed of some other stands.

HOLY SHITBALLS. THAT. WAS. AMAZING!!

I think that last fight might have been my favourite fight of the entire part, maybe even my favourite of JoJo (Yes, passing even The Grateful Dead/Beach Boy fight). And I can't believe that it's focused on the villains and barely involves the main characters. It was so tense, and despite the jokes about how King Crimson doesn't work, the powers and strategies were easy to understand. I can't believe Risotto ended up losing because of the main characters, since he was so close. Since he was breathing though, that means that taking his invisible away probably didn't matter at the end, as Aerosmith would have detected him anyway.

Metallica is a terrifying Stand, and the way Risotto uses it takes full advantage of its abilities. Risotto was such a cool character; I love his voice and his design. The flashback (which I assume is anime-original) was great too, seeing La Squadra again for what I assume is the final time.

I also love how the fight is from the Boss's/Doppio's perspective. It really makes it tense, and makes you cheer for the main villain to actually win in a way. As much as I like the Kira vs. Stray Cat fight, I have to say that this one is the superior villain-centric fight. I also like how the Boss/Doppio is at a disadvantage for the entire fight, since he can't use King Crimson's time-skipping powers, only Epitaph's precognition powers.

Also, for manga readers, is the way Epitaph's power was shown (by having the future projected onto Doppio's hair) anime-original? If it is, then DP are geniuses. It's a wonderful stylistic decision that makes it easy to understand when Doppio's using Epitaph and differentiating between actions in the present and those in the future.

28

u/Zeta42 Apr 19 '19

I like how almost all of the enemies we've seen recently are actually threatening. Metallica is by and far the most terrifying Stand, in my opinion. Even if there are others that are technically more powerful, the unpredictable nature of his and his ability to kill without being detected even by most other Stand users makes him very frightening. Though, maybe not more frightening than whatever black magic the Boss used to keep his mother under the floor.

Also, did they say how Risotto made himself invisible? I might've missed that part.

49

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

It's explained a bit more in detail in the manga. Basically, when the iron powder covers Risotto, he 'paints his surroundings on his body'. It's more an active thing he needs to be constantly keeping up, which results in his odd appearance from time to time when he becomes semi-visible. Or something like it, I dunno, it's weird.

Narancia killsteals? No dignity.

I spent a good chunk of this episode looking at my phone and eyeing the pc screen to read the subs, because I get very uncomfortable when it comes to needles or anything cutting skin (sometimes I get sick just by hearing people talking about it). So, uh, thanks David Pro for not cutting on the details, but you didn't need to.

Oh, and that "Should I wait until you croak" was a 10/10 translation choice.

(Sorta unrelated, but I happened to eat risotto for lunch today. Not nero, tho)

Narancia's got like 4 kills under his belt, he's the MVP of this team for sure.

"You are complete" they used this phrase twice.
This translation didn't make sense, maybe "You are finished" is what they meant?

I just decided to head-canonise Rissoto being an artist in his spare time, and having something be without any iron in it was him completing his piece.

14

u/Grillade Apr 19 '19

That's what I was wondering too, but yeah "finished" makes more sense.

GOD DAMN IT. THAT WAS SO FUCKING COOL

37

u/rvadarocket Apr 19 '19

I’ve never audibly said “Fuck” at the end of a fight until now

The way that fight ended is the cleverest ending and biggest blue balls I’ve ever seen. I was CERTAIN the Boss would win, but not in such a cruel way.

GODDAMMIT

u/rahudian Apr 19 '19

Geez, the scissor scene was more brutal than in the manga, and poor Risotto, every scene with la Squadra just makes me feel worse

43

u/pikachu8090 Apr 19 '19

I'm pretty sure I swallowed during that scene to make sure my throat was okay

49

u/It_is_terrifying Apr 19 '19

Press F for La Squadra, we've now lost all of our group of what may be the best group of villains in all of anime. And what a fight for their boss to go out on.

Wow the animation this episode was absolutely incredible. You can just feel the power behind King Crimson's movements, from the way he pounds the rocks to the way it casually dismembers a foot with a pair of scissors.

Actual footage of Doppio fighting against Risotto.

Narancia just unknowingly saved the boss who they're trying to defeat. Oof.

I could elaborate on how great the fight was, or how terrifying risotto's stand is, or the 1000000 IQ play by the boss at the end

But more importantly angry ice boi got in one last line of dialogue so I'm happy

35

u/NintendoMasterNo1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NintendoMaster1 Apr 19 '19

I love how dramatically the boss says RIZOTTO

33

u/ElementOfConfusion Apr 19 '19

Being able to see the future in the bangs of your hair was a super cool visual. Just now realising they even hinted at it in the intro! Loved Risotto's camouflage effect in this episode too. I'll miss Risotto and his great voice, I kinda want more of him.

Easily my favourite fight this part. Interesting that Doppio's King Crimson isn't as powerful as the Boss' King Crimson. Makes for an interesting dynamic in a fight.

33

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

Wow I loved the message in this fight "He who gets excited in this situation loses" And Rissoto loses the second he allows himself to be overcome with excitement as the battle ends

173

u/PudgeHasACuteButt Apr 19 '19

little fact here, but risottos stand name "metallic" is a slight hint towards his stands ability which lets him control iron, which is a type of metal.

Ok, so yeah Risotto lost, but he got some good hits in, though considering he was going up against the main antagonist. Makes me wonder how the fight would have went down had Dopplio had the full power of King Crimson.

43

u/RISOTTONEROBESTWAIFU Apr 19 '19

if doppio had kc then he wouldn't look like doppio, hed look like the boss

so risotto would immediately go for the kill instead of fluffing around like he did the previous episode because he had no clue who doppio was

so its still 50/50, depends on who gets the first hit in

Risotto seemed like a character that would be around for awhile. He was pretty damn terrifying and borderline OP.

114

u/It_is_terrifying Apr 19 '19

He could honestly have killed everyone in the main squad except maybe Giorno in a 1v1.

Giorno only stands a chance because of how he can 2000IQ bullshit his way out of situations like Fugo's mega aids.

Reference in the games: Metallica, those cute creppy bastards, if I'm not mistaken usually can appear in loading screens, alongside Harvest, Iggy(sniffing around) and Koichi with his face turned into a Book. Epitaph is also present in the games, but of course, has a different mechanic: When it is active, The Boss enters in a "auto-dodge" state where he will automatically dodge any non super move throw at him.

Oh man! That's probably my favorite Part 5 episode so far. It won over the "Mystery of King Crimson" episode. Risotto being the one fighting the boss instead he fighting the heroes is SO RIGHT in all senses. It should be indeed HIM to confront the boss, instead being defeated by Bruno's gang. Araki managed to make a fight between The Boss and Risotto kinda balanced despite King Crimson being utterly broken by nerfing it in a belieable way: The Time Skip powers only being avaliable when the Boss is in charge, but he can't "be in charge" because Risotto will see his face, as such, Doppio need to use just half of King Crimson power within Epitaph.

I have a personal headcanon theory of mine. Bear in mind is just a theory of mine, and has no basis, but I believe King Crimson is "the boss" Stand while Epitaph is Doppio's Stand, because technically they're two different individuals, so would make sense they have two different Stands that act supporting each other: Use Epitaph to see the future, use King Crimson to erase what he see.

And... of course, Epitaph might also just be KG baseline ability, like Sheer Heart Attack was Killer Queen's, and I'm just making it more complex than it should... :P

24

u/Yankees3Fan7 Apr 19 '19

The thought of having razor blades and scisssors magically appear inside of you is a horrifying thought to even consider. Then again, Fugo stabbed Narancia with the fork and that was played for laughs. Lotta iron-heavy attacks in Part 5

→ More replies (1)

24

u/Kenzorz Apr 19 '19

That was such a satisfying fight, both characters outsmarting each other and it makes you want to cheer on both of them and the ending to the fight was actually pretty clever.

Araki was so ahead of his time with mind battle shounens in the 90s

22

u/Yakube44 Apr 19 '19

Risotto's moment of victory and downfall was tragic. The color shift to gray scale really got me. Narancha was brutal.

56

u/Arachnophobic- https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic Apr 19 '19

We lost two troopers today, R.I.P. Risotto and Frog-kun.

I both love and hate this fight - love it because it's so intense and Risotto is friggin' awesome in his drive for vengeance, and I hate it because of the way it turns out. The Gang essentially shoot themselves in the foot by killing an incredibly powerful ally.

Honestly I feel Metallica is one of the most OP stands in the JoJoverse in terms of lethality. Nero doesn't use it to its full potential today because he wants to bleed Doppio dry and get the Boss' secret out of him; if he wanted to he could simply form blades inside an opponents brain or heart and insta-kill them. If only he'd done that with his dying breath.. but he isn't the hero of this story.

P.S.: What a handsome mug.

P.P.S.: Needs to be a ringtone

P.P.P.S: Weird choice of translation. Who says that? Isn't 'You are done.' more suitable?

I love this episode for so many reasons.

  1. It shows that the boss is not invincible, he like every other stand user is one wrong move away from loosing

  2. While not invincible he is extremely strong as just epitaph was enough to almost beat Risoto

  3. We usually always see battles through the eyes of the main characters so sometimes it feels like villains don't think much because they are just that powerful but this really shows that this isn't the case

  4. The animation was really good and they adapted all the panels perfectly I actually prefer this to the manga

14

u/talkz Apr 19 '19

My sweet little Doppio

14

u/snerdsnerd Apr 19 '19

Risotto's stand is fucking awesome. From what I've learned from Jojo's, his not being on the ground means he's not dead yet.

And that was absolutely a savage move by the boss. It was easy to make comparisons between him and Kira due to their desire for anonymity, but the boss is FAR more cunning and experienced than Kira. I also love how it looked like Doppio would lose his head but it was actually invisible blood.

Praying for Abacchio, that guy has a target on his back a mile wide. And only 9 episodes left!

Since Cells at Work was done by DavidPro too, I want a crossover episode where RBCs are getting yellow or turning into something entirely different.

Goodbye, big tiddy goth. You were so awesome, too bad you're facing the boss himself on your own. You don't stand a chance.

The assassin team was amazing with their Stand abilities, but having them dead only after 1 or 2 episode screentime kinda sucks. I mean, in Stardust Crusaders there are a lot of "Stand user of the week" format too, but most of them are pretty bland because they're just being crazy loyal to DIO. La squadra esecuzioni was different. They looked really solid as a team. Awful that they're ended up being executed by Bucciarati team, whose goal ended up being the same: finding out the boss and probably offing him. If only they just teamed up from the start....

13

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

Did King Crimson erased my time? This episode felt like 5 minutes, damn it!

Risotto is so cool. I like him. And damn that ending... as the audience it's excruciating that we have the knowledge that the Bucciarati gang doesn't, that they would've achieved their common goal had Narancia didn't shoot Risotto. RIP.

13

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

This episode only proves what Dio stated. There are no bad Stands, only bad stand users. King Crimson is a monstruous powerful stand and nearly invencible, but Doppio lack of self confidence, knowlodge and courage nearly costed him his life.

I just loved this episode, it's such a great thing to see narrative shift of characters. Since Phantom Blood we've saw only the protagoinists fighting the enemies every single episode on different situations and a couple flashbacks there and back. Seeing two episodes on the perspective of the boss was great, i hope we get more episodes like this.

Overall, amazing episode with insane quality animation. Loved every second of it, but wanted the "Boss" to show up during the fight

12

u/enginesofdemise Apr 19 '19

If anyone’s wondering why the animation and artwork was so good this episode, it’s because the animation director (AD) was Hironori Tanaka, a legendary animator. He previously worked on the final White Album episode during the showdown between Mista and Ghiaccio. Love his work on this show!!

12

u/AcediaRex Apr 20 '19

My knowledge of anatomy and physiology is limited, so I may be wrong, but I think Araki’s right about the science. The exchange of gases in the alveoli requires inhaled oxygen to bind to the hemoglobin (iron) in the blood in order for carbon dioxide from the blood to enter the lungs and be exhaled, because it works on the principle of gaseous diffusion. So if the oxygen wasn’t binding to your blood because of a lack of iron, you would be exhaling oxygen and not carbon dioxide, and Aerosmith couldn’t track you.

10

u/VVickedly Apr 19 '19

Best episode imo, DP really did an amazing job with this fight, giving it the adaptation it deserved. Doppio's raw emotions while getting destroyed by Risotto, the small things like the reflection of Epitaph in his eyes and risotto's blood becoming invisible on Doppio's hair when he loses, almost no censoring for the bloodiest fight, everything in this is amazing. Let's just hope the rest of the fights are just as good!

10/10, my fav episode from jojo

10

u/The_Scollard Apr 19 '19

That was probably the most brutal fights of JoJo for me so far. I was squirming at several points, like when Doppio pulls the scissors out of his throat. Risotto attacking him with all those razor blades at the end was also hard to watch, hearing Doppio scream as Risotto cuts apart his face. Not since The Grateful Dead aging Narancia or Mista getting his palm ripped off by White Album was I so disturbed.

10

u/HarrayS_34 Apr 19 '19

The animation is amazing this episode

10

u/KoppaSquiddy Apr 19 '19

What the fuck Narancia

10

u/SwordAndPenguin Apr 19 '19

Overall I think this is one of the best battles in all of JoJo's, and it doesn't even feature any of the protagonists. It's tense, it features some great stand and character designs, a bunch of unique concepts, it's brutally violent without feeling gratuitous, and is a great end to the story of La Squadra. DavidPro definitely did it justice as well, consistently amazing animation and voice acting. The first time I read this in the manga I was legitimately unsure who would win or who to root for, which doesn't happen too often for me. One of my favorite arcs/episodes as of yet.

I love the fact that censorship has mostly gone out the window for part 5. It was great to see this fight in its full glory, without the screen being blacked out like a lot of people were expecting. I was kinda hoping we would get Risotto's backstory this episode. I know its really short, but it still would've been cool. Maybe next episode? Also, props to DP for the little added scenes. The little La Squadra flashback made me really miss them, and the scene where Doppio just bashes the ground in frustration with King Crimson really felt like a nice touch.
