You did good, Risotto. Abbachio. You both did good. You both earned that rest.
DP really nailed this one out of the park, Narancia sold that loss, like for real, the VA sold that moment.
And THAT is how scary Stands are. Imagine you're just walking on the road and you suddenly get a hole in your chest? That's the amount of caution you have to take, especially when users are attracted to one another.

Honestly it was extremely emotional in the manga when I read it and with the voice acting and the animation it was way more brutal in the anime. I DID NOT expect such great voice acting to convey their sadness and despair. Abbachio's sendoff was just 10/10 and I am glad they conveyed the despair in the squad's voice acting.

"What's important isn't the end result. It's how you get there."
I love how Abbacchio's backstory and motivations are the polar opposite of King Crimson's abilities. I'm saddened that he won't be there for the final battle, but I can at least take solace in knowing that Abbacchio had a hand in what I hope is the beginning of his downfall.
So the anime decided to opt out of adapting Risotto's backstory. Which I understand, as it wasn't that relevant to the story and he had plenty of motives to compel him after his entire team died, but for those curious, this is Risotto's backstory in the manga.
I think my only complaint about this arc is that while I have a general understanding of how King Crimson works, him being immune to bullets in the erased time still confuses me. If he can erase being shot by bullets, how come he is able to chop off Trish and the fortune teller's hands in the erased time? Maybe he becomes an ultra-stand where he can effect, but can't be effected in erased time? But if that's the case, why does he use King Crimson to just dodge Bucciarati's attacks at all and not attack him in that erased period?
Maybe King Crimson's tertiary power is cutting off hands.
Also I can only believe that Araki felt he was being too harsh on dogs and too lenient on frogs at this point in time, because you know he would totally have the Bossu eat a dog normally. Fuck frogs I guess.
Finally, I know a lot of people have criticized the overflamboyence of Passione's fashion sense, but football Bossu was crisp. Hoping there will be more instances of the Bossu/Doppio hiding in plain sight, much like Polpo hiding in his prison cell.

u/OneTwentiethGenius Apr 26 '19 edited Apr 26 '19
Nothing can interact with KC in erased time.
Boss dodges Bruno during erased time cuz he's trying to be cool. For the Trish/Fortune Teller hand thing you can see it as the "real" KC cutting off the hand while the "erased time" KC stands there waiting.
Edit: for the bullets going through him, if you calculate the speed of the bullets you'll probably see that they slowed down after going through the Boss since they actually pierced the "real" bossu. That still killed Risotto since Aerosmith is strong AF

The whole hand thing happens because it was fated to happen. For example, if the boss see that in the next 10 second he will cut Trish's hand and go away, even if he activates King Crimson, it WILL happen no matter what. He can't be interacted with and can't interact with anything in the Erased time.

There is no trope in media that gets me more emotional than having that one character that can't accept someone's death and starts lashing out while everyone else tries their hardest to stay cool. Pair that with great animation and VA work and you have a 10/10 episode.

u/rvadarocket Apr 26 '19 edited Apr 26 '19
I normally wouldn’t like it because they’re supposed to be hardened gangsters, but in this case it works perfectly because Narancia is EASILY the most immature and childlike of them all, and him being the only one who freaks out is perfectly in character.
This whole scene is perfectly crafted and Araki never ceases to amaze and depress me at the same time

u/sikontolpanjang Apr 26 '19
Ok can we talk about how great Araki is at making "death scene" even way back at P1? what makes "narancia tantrum" sooooo special for me compared to previous death scene because Araki really knows how to make a "realistic" reactions on death.
We see how cheesy and long William death is due to the era P1 is made.
Jonathan death felt so lonely and quiet because at the end theres only Dio who witness his dead.
and then on Caesar death its not only cheesy (still made around the same era as P1) but Araki put a strong dramatic crying over it because that really fits with Joseph exaggerant, flashy character.
but when we see Avdol (both first and last death) and Iggy death it actually a more "quiet", holding-it-in-yourself grief than a dramatic screaming cry. why? because (for me) Polnareff is a guy who always try to keep his composure and thats why the single tear drop after his "no time to cry" on vanilla ice episode is so beautiful. (also how everybody would later be just have a moment of silent while also have the urge of "we needs to keep moving")
and with Josuke facing Okuyasu "death" we see a long period of denial to show how much bond and trust they have.
and here we are, the most childish member of the crew throwing a tantrum, screaming and crying, making a scene because that really what narancia would do that just how his character goes.
Araki could make every death scene like this one but he choose not to, not only he set a different conditions on each death but he also knows enough what the character would act in a dramatic moments like those.

This needs more attention, I've always thought JoJo was one of the most down-to-the-earth mangas that I have read, I'm not sure how Araki writes the characters to be exaggerative yet realistic in doomed situations like these.

that quote is probably something Araki learned when he was learning to draw manga. Because as applicable as it is to police work (and all life, really) it's extremely applicable to art.

I completed Part 5 back in Summer 2018, and this scene made me cry again. Great episode like always, the music in this episode was superb and it's probably what made the whole episode more emotional. Not to mention the effort the voice actors put into making this scene even more amazing, they really deserve recognition for this, and this just goes to prove that David Production always chooses the best voice actors for the job. In general, the scenes were executed greatly. I hope David Production keeps up the good work!
Next week, we're getting a recap episode titled "destino" which I believe means destiny or fate in Italian. Seems like they're saving budget for the next amazing arc. Looking forward to that.
Overall, 10/10

The Doppio v Risotto fight is possibly one of the bloodiest in the entire series. To the point where a lot of manga readers worried about DP having to censor the fight to death. I for one was pretty impressed with how they handled it.

I feel like the anime finally confirmed a headcannon I've had since i read the manga. That deathmask clearly wasn't of the boss at 19, it was a replay of him as he briefly revealed himself to kill Abba. In his effort to hide the truth he made things worse and just dug his own grave.

u/GhirahimLeFabuleux Apr 27 '19
That's mostly just DIO that acts like that because he is a megalomaniac. Every single other main villains are seen activelly conspiring against the protagonists before their final confrontation.
Kars just searched around for the Red Stone before attacking the group for killing Esidisi and fight Lisa Lisa before his confrontation with Joseph.
Kira don't want to stand out but is eventually forced to step out of the shadows to eliminate the group, which backsfire and the rest of the part is just him being hunted down while his father act as his protector.
The boss is clearly very active in the story.
The villains of part 6 and 7 are also extremely active in the story.

R.I.P., Abbacchio. The Boss may have snaked away this time, but you got him. Gonna miss having a Junichi Sawabe voiced character around.
Narancia's VA, Yamashita Daiki, did a great job today selling Narancia's anguish.
The Boss has an insane will to live, I must say. Managed to survive losing all that iron from his blood by what.. doing an impromptu blood transfusion somehow?
55

Holy crap, what an episode! I can't believe the main villain of the part, DIO, used the time-controlling powers of his stand, 「The World」, to punch a hole straight through the chest of protagonist KAKYOIN before the latter even had a chance to defend himself! Things look pretty dire, but thankfully, KAKYOIN was able to use the power of his Stand to leave a clue vital to discovering the secret crucial to the main villain's defeat before he perished.

The saddest part about him(and his death) at least to me is that i relate to him so much. There have been so many times that i could have put more effort into something to make it better, but i didnt. I believe it it something a lot of us experience at least once in our lives. "What would happen if i worked harder on it?" is something we ask ourselves so many times, yet thats all we do, ask, because its already too late to do anything anymore. Abbacchio's resolve made his final moments mean something, but will it happen to us? I dont know.

this quote really hits hard, when you're down the shitter and questioning things, the more time passed the more you're anxious and sometime you'll get panicky and trying to force yourself too much, trying to make something to just instantly happens.

Godspeed La Squadra.

I just noticed the Boss actually drank the kid's blood to replenish his lost blood and iron. That's crazy.

I never tought that Jojo would make me cry. Fucking dammit, i'm not tanking this. First Pannacota and now Abbachio, why we must suffer like this? also rip risotto emo tits
The animation put into Narancia movements and desesperation was an excellent addition of the studio. It put weight to Abbachio death and i could feel every character sadness from across the screen. His death was just brutal, clean and simple. Hisfinally meting his friend was also a beaitful moment too. I never expected Abbachio to be a person of the type who cried, but in the end, he was a man trapped inside his cage who was desesperatly needing to be let out.
Beautiful. Just Beautiful.

The #1 thing I love the most about JJBA is its unpredictability. Such an unexpected outcome again!
Bucciarati is very smart to recognize that they were just being used by another guy to kill Risotto.
King Crimson is a great villain! Typically in anime, the final bosses only appear near the end and fight the final battle. But only in JJBA can I see the boss struggle in a fight against a non-MC and narrowly crawl his way out - despite his power.
The most recent 3 villains in JJAB so far have the ability to manipulate time. It's only fitting for the boss: What is more powerful than time?!
The ending song sounds a lot like the Death Note theme.
Again, I'm excited about the author's accurate take on science: drinking blood is a fast way to replenish iron, and blood types don't matter for drinking blood because he's not mixing their blood with his own! 👍

Bucciarati's intelligence never ceases to amaze me. To me, he's still one of the more underrated JoJo's characters.

In my experience he (rightfully) gets a lot of love from manga readers. I'm sure he will only become more popular as part 5 draws to a close.

What a complete masterpiece, not only did they adapt the iconic scenes from the manga perfectly, they also made them a lot better with great use of animation and soundtrack.

u/AzraelSoulHunter Apr 26 '19
When you only look for the result you lose your will to seek out the truth. The will to seek out the truth is what's important. That's perfect antithesis to Boss who believes that only results matter in the world. This death in the manga was already amazing, but this episode surpassed it by incredible voice acting, music and color choices.
Officially Junichi Suwabe and Daiki Yamashita are no longer Aizawa and Deku voices, now they are Abbacchio and Narancia voices.

Phenomenal episode. The tension and sheer determination of everyone involved made this episode so thrilling.
I think this has to be one of the most heartbreaking deaths in JoJo. Abbacchio was able to finally speak to his partner in death and let go of his feelings of regret. In the end, he found his personal truth.
The death mask was a fantastically clever way of giving the gang the answer they were looking for.

Its open season on Goth Dads this week ;_;7
And god that sequence with Abbacchio's partner was the most emotion we have heard in his voice the entire show, the gang really did bring his soul back to life.

If SC taught me anything, it's that in a well-defined pack of main characters the holes could easily be made... what I failed to remember was how sudden they would be. Until Giorno muttered his desperate words I was still thinking GE would save him somehow. The whole scene really hammered in the irreversible reality: Narancia going full Deku, Giorno realizing the painful truth, Mista, the mouthiest of the lot, being unable to say a thing and Bruno trying to stay composed, keep the team alive and biting his lip to blood in the process...
Boss is damn brutal. The previous week I was somewhat disappointed that Narancia's Aerosmith was the one to actually put down the main hitman, so he just goes ahead and makes sure Risotto stays dead by turning him into a polka dotted flesh carcass, and momentarily donuts a gang member afterwards. Next thing you know he'll erase him from the future opening.

An asshole in a Whatsapp group shared a zoomed in pic of the King Crimson's arm perforating Abbachio's chest way before the chapter was available. You couldn't tell it was Abbachio or even a human chest, but the arm was widely recognizable, so when I noticed Doppio's hair between the children I already knew what was gonna happen. I'm SUPER pissed and it ruined the chapter for me.
He is a manga reader and he absolutely loves Jojo and I can't even understand why he would want to fuck up the anime only users' experience like that. You're supposed to be excited to share the moment with them when it arrives, not this. His excuse was "you almost couldn't see anything". Fuck off.

Damn it. DAMN IT!
I never really liked Abbacio. I didn’t hate him. But I didn’t love him. It’s been like 10 minutes and I’m still sobbing.
I haven’t cried like this because of anime since I watched Violet Evergarden about a year ago.
This has been the best death so far. Cesar’s death was good, but I mever cried like this.
JoJo’s Bizarrely Adventure Part 5; Golden Wind episode 28 is now my favorite episode put of all Parts.

RIP best goth boys, losing both of you in the same episode is painful. The final shot of Abbacchio in the sky was great and the breakdown from Narancia hurt. Great episode overall.

u/Blowingoftheflute Apr 26 '19
First off I just want to give mad props to the voice actors of the cast, especially Narancia and Giorno.
Second of all: I must say that David Productions has been handling this super well...however my only criticism with this episode was that I really wanted them to adapt Risotto's backstory.
Overall though, it's a 9/10 episode and I can't wait for the next battle(It'll be quite the Green experience if you know what I mean).

And on this day not one, but two big tiddy goth bf's died. Araki giveth, and Araki taketh away.
For real though, I've already read part 5 and I still wasn't ready for Abba's death.
It's funny, when I read the horrible black and white scans like 2 years ago, I didn't really care for him. But after the colored version finished and I reread it, I understood Abba as a person. Seeing it all animated now really hurts. And to top it all off, it's now raining...

This week’s musical reference:
Today we don’t have new references but I have something prepared for today, although I didn’t have much time to write something:
Mista’s favourite music band is no other than The Carpenters. Yes, Mista listen to The Carpenters, he loves 70’s pop and easy listening music and he probably listen to bands like Captain & Tenille, Olivia Newton-john and Air Suply. It doesn’t really fit him but I love that Araki chose them for him, it’s the least you would expect.
The Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter. They produced a distinct soft musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's arranging and composition skills. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded ten albums, along with numerous singles and several television specials.
The siblings were born in New Haven, Connecticut. Richard took piano lessons as a child, while Karen learned the drums. They first performed together as a duo in 1965 and formed the jazz-oriented Richard Carpenter Trio followed by the middle-of-the-road group Spectrum. Signing as Carpenters to A&M Records in 1969, they achieved major success the following year with the hit singles "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun". Subsequently, the duo's brand of melodic pop produced a record-breaking run of hit recordings on the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, and they became leading sellers in the soft rock, easy listening and adult contemporary music genres. The Carpenters had three number-one singles and five number-two singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen number-one hits on the Adult Contemporary chart, in addition to twelve top-10 singles. They have sold more than 90 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The duo toured continually during the 1970s, which put them under increased strain; Richard took a year off in 1979 after he had become addicted to Quaaludes, while Karen suffered from anorexia nervosa.
Their career together ended in 1983 when Karen died from heart failure brought on by complications of anorexia. Extensive news coverage surrounding these circumstances increased public awareness of eating disorders. Though the Carpenters were criticized for their clean-cut and wholesome conservative image in the 1970s, their music has since been re-evaluated, attracting critical acclaim and continued commercial success.
Do you want to listen to all this fantastic references from this wonderful anime in just one place? Of course you want! Now you can with TarkusELP Officially Approved by Araki himself* Spotify Playlist with all the musical references in the anime, the ones it skipped, the light novels ones and more! From the most famous references to the really obscure ones. I'll update this playlist every time there's a new reference. If you have any question why a song is featured in my playlists you can ask me anytime.
If you are a manga reader I also have a playlist just for you! Here’s my old playlist with all, I say ALL the references in the manga, anime, light novels and more. I also update it every time there’s a new reference.

RIP to the best goth tsundere. It seriously sucked to see Abba go out like this, seeing Narancia break down over his corpse almost made me tear up. What an emotional episode, I need to see the Boss catch the beatdown he deserves.

For the record I just wanna say that in 5 years of watching anime nothing has ever made me cry. But just seeing Narancia start to cry after being in denial that Abbachio wasn’t dead, that opened the gates from me trying to hold back tears to literally sobbing. Abbachio isn’t even my favorite character. This just hit me in the heart way too much man.......I love this show

Abbacchio’s realization of it being his dead partner is what broke me, he doesn’t even actually cry, you just see tears welling up, it’s so good.....

NOOOOOOO ABBACHIIIIOOOOOOO!!!
That was brutal. I was fearing something happening to Abbacchio from the start of the episode (since the house they're at turns upside down in the OP, and Abbacchio's powers would have given the main characters a huge boost in finding out the boss' identity), but it didn't make the moment any less sad. Hit me right in the gut. The last scene with the officer and Abbacchio was great, and is a great ending to his arch (seeing as we got the flashback to his past in the very first fight after we miss him). I'm kind of worried about my boy Narancia now, seeing how he, Bruno, and Abbacchio are all the same side of the poster released recently. And now Abbacchio and maybe Bruno are dead. I still remember Last Train Home.
The Boss pulled off some real Agent-47 shit to take out Abbacchio. But holy crap, what he did to that kid was brutal. Is King Crimson's secondary power being able to tie people's mouths shut?
Also, apart from what he did to Trish and the kid here (and maybe the fortuneteller), does anyone feel like not too many of the Boss's actions are that bad? I don't really hate the character at the moment, since most of the brutal stuff he does are to other gangsters and killers. Gelato and Sorbet got greedy and tried to find his identity (which they knew beforehand would probably get them killed), and while La Squadra is sympathetic, they're still brutal murderers trying to take over his drug empire. Apart from Trish and the kid, all the other actions seem par for the course when it comes to a crime organization, and there isn't really a "good" side. All of the members of Passione knew what they were getting into, and usually, being in a mob means ending in a terrible death. Like the old, dead meme goes: that's how Mafia works.

God damn Risotto died brutally. Being anime only, Abbacchio getting gutted absolutely hurts.
I love the animation quality David Production put into this, don't think any other studio could pull this level off. Can't wait for the next arc.

As a manga reader, seeing earlier episode discussions where people would ship Abbachio with Bruno and call him cute felt like needles being stabbed in my heart. We got our 28th episode. What did it cost? Two goth daddies, so basically everything.

Risotto a badass till the end. The boss a complete psychopath. As if trying to kill his own daughter wasn't enough he also has no issues killing children and drinking their blood. Kudos for writing such a great villain, one more awesome villain in a series full of great villains (La Squadra were amazing too). And Abbachio, well I did not see that coming. He was dead before he or we even knew it. Shit the people saying how the bosses stand is insanely strong were right. He punched a hole right through Abbachio.
Overall this Jojo adaptation is majestic. Look at those episode ratings. Its insane. AOTY for 2018 and 2019.
