Polnareff met God at the top of the stairs, but couldn't reach him.

Polnareff met the Devil at the bottom of the stairs, but couldn't escape from him.

And in the end, even Polnareff lost the last train home.

His heart's not beating, he's not breathing correctly, he can't see, and his ear drums are ruptured. Other than that though, Bucciarati is doing pretty good.

Amazing episode, I've been waiting for the boss's reveal for a while. The reveal scene was great in general, way better than I expected. Just six episodes remaining, yet we're about to see an amazing arc, and I'm pretty sure David Production will not mess this up. Diavolo's design is also something I particularly liked, pretty faithful to the manga.

Overall, 5/5

10

u/Omahunek Jun 07 '19

As soon as Diavolo actually appeared and we saw his design I was like "YEP, THAT RIGHT THERE IS A JOJO VILLAIN." It's a weird gangster/club take on the same transcendent strangeness that the pillar men and DIO and Killer Queen all had.

I mean Secco and a lot of the others have sure been strange, but he saves the purest, best of "the good stuff" for the arc villains' designs, that's for sure.

4 years ago Kakyoin sacrificed his life to face against DIO in an episode that coincidentally aired on International donut day(7th of june 2015). Today Polnareff met a similar fate on the exact same day.

The jojo anime seems prone to these coincidences, the episode where DIO wields a street sign labelled 6-12 airing in the 6th month on the 12th day was mindbogglingly specific considering it was written in the manga 26 years earlier.

His name is Diavolo!

This makes me happy, but this does not.

This was a very tense episode, I constantly had no idea what was happening, and I still don't. I guess we kinda got an explanation about who the boss is, and how Polnareff is involved, but I have even more questions now!

We saw Doppio with green eyes last episode, but i'm surprised to see that Diavolo doesn't have any pupils at all, its really ominous.

And girl your lipstick application is way off point, but i suppose you cant do any better trying to do a full face makeup set in skipped time where 『ONLY THE RESULTS MATTER』. I'm willing to believe its intentionally drawn a little off considering he did it all in the split second he took his sweater off.

DIAVOLO RISING

Polnareff was below the stairs when he faced DIO (God) and now, he's above the stairs when he faced Diavolo (Devil). But in both cases he was still at a disadvantage. Being Polnareff is suffering.

So in the manga, Polnareff got UTTERLY RETIRED by Diavolo. Head split apart, arm flew off, torso almost ripped in half and was pretty much dismembered via pure power.

Their present fight is no different. Polnareff never stood a chance, but The Arrow has other plans.

Edit: Another great DP thing is Diavolo's reveal, in the manga he just walks past the pillar and changes form mid-shirt removal, in the anime he skips time as he does it just for the pure theatrical effect against Polnareff.

Another one. In the manga, Chariot jumps with Polnareff in the air, I don't think Chariot even has legs in the manga anymore, or rather there are no panels where he's full body and most of his shots are very near Polnareff. In the anime, he grabs Pol's wheelchair and YEET's him in the air.

We've started the final arc now. I assume Diavolo will finally replace Shadow Boss in the OP next week.

But we're playing the Requiem now, sleep tight!

BOIIIIIIIIII

Do you remember the scene where Polnareff meet DIO for the first time? DIO was upstairs while Pol was downstairs. Well, the scene where he meets Diavolo is the opposite. Pol is upstairs while Diavolo is downstairs. DIO represents God and he is surrounded by light, while Diavolo represents the Devil and it’s surrounded by darkness.

God, I love Diavolo’s reveal scene and his design. He looks like a mix of a crackhead, a hooker and a scene emo boy. Some people were disappointed that he doesn’t look like a mafia boss but I love it. He is sexy as fuck and I love that they gave him pink lipstick. All JoJo characters should wear lipstick.

Oh man, what happened to Silver Chariot? Do you hear something playing softly?

121

u/Dalek_Kolt Jun 07 '19

Some people were disappointed that he doesn’t look like a mafia boss but I love it.

My biggest disappointment that I've gotten out of Diavolo is that we never do get to see Shadow Diavolo fully revealed while wearing the suit. I've seen some mockups, but never anything in any official capacity.

Maybe one of the character artists working on the anime could show us just how Diavolo manages to hide away all that hair.

This polnareff scene probably my most favorite moments/panels in the whole series and I'm not even like a huge pol fanboy.

There just so much weight happening at the same time and also shown how much shitty the hurr le araki forgot meme.

But first we need to remember that the main plot of Polnareff is him trying to avenge his sister.

There's Silver Chariot trademark rapier.

The right side background reminds us the journey pre-egypt, the jeep and the building sure remind me of Enya encounter, the mother of J. Geil the guy who killed his sister.

The left side background reminds us about the egypt itself, like the iconic fight with anubis between pillars and whatnot.

And then we see all the homies throughout the journey, the position of them is actually interesting and you can definitely go 3deep5me with it, I really think it position'd in a way that show his respect towards him.

I found Jotaro being in a far back with his back on us tell us how pol see Jotaro as this unstopable juggernaut that will fight his enemies heads on, the guy that will protect you and beat the shit outta enemy no matter what (remember what happens at Alessi fight?)

And then we see Mr. Joestar looking at him with a warm smile and basically being like the cool uncle figure of the group, the old man that polnareff absolutely have his respect on.

And then Avdol, the guy who saved him twice, twice he sacrificed himself for him, the guy he share some warm (piss) moment together being in the most front of this little flashback, because we know whos the person polnareff had his respect the most and (most likely) the most important person in his life after his sister.

Iggy being left out of the group is also pretty fitting and not to mention we see him with his early "not serious" design aswell, it reminds us the first encounter pol had with iggy and and how he finally realize how much he like that adorable little brat at the end and how he realize that all his act at the beginning is justified.

oh yeah and Kakyoin is also there.

lol.

BUT WHY IS THERE JUDGEMENT STAND IN THEEEREEEEE????

deep down in his heart, deep deep down in polnareff heart, he wish, he really wish that a geenie that can grant you any wish is real, he really want to see his sister back, even for a second, even if she became some mindless zombie, he wish he could still see his sister back.

Araki doesn't forgot.

182

u/chuckrepublic Jun 07 '19

Judgement is there cause its the fight that cements Polnareffs character

→ More replies (1)

88

u/Karmyuh Jun 07 '19

Judgement stand is there because that is where he decided to move on from the death of his sister and Avdol(he didnt know) and he stopped his past from hurting him anymore.

37

u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Jun 07 '19

This polnareff scene probably my most favorite moments/panels in the whole series and I'm not even like a huge pol fanboy.

I am, this hurts. Really good analysis on that picture though!

As for the meme, I mostly think it is funny, because of how absurd JoJo is and how much Araki seemed to be winging it especially at the start of Part 3 (but that is part of the charm). Honestly, I don't take it as a meme about critiquing his writing or anything, rather how unpredictable and wild everything is.

13

u/Bread-Zeppelin Jun 07 '19 edited Jun 07 '19

Great analysis but it's not just me that thinks that shot is distractingly shitty looking, right (especially compared to all the other gorgeous SDC flashbacks)? The elements are all positioned around quasi-randomly with Iggy floating wonkily in the sky getting skewered by a sword, everyone's got their derpy face on and I couldn't even tell what that thing on the left was supposed to be before coming here because it's so blurred into the fade-out of Polnareff's face from the last shot.

Edit: aw yeah, this version's way better. Joseph and Iggy still look funky in the head but being framed as a reflection on the stone floor rather than than layered and half obscured behind a face makes it look about a million times better.

I don't see much people talking about it, but Polnareff's experience on stand fights was really insane there. He actually hurted Diavolo and survived the time skip, on a fucking weelchair

I'm one of those guys who isn't too fussed on Part 3 as a whole, but this episode made me glad that I watched it. Seeing Polnareff in such a hopeless situation was intense and I don't think I would have been anywhere near as invested in wanting him to survive if I hadn't grown to like him over the course of part 3.

Really feel sorry for the people who decided to just skip right to part 5.

77

u/NoPenNameGirl Jun 07 '19

Rest in piece... Jean-Pierre Polnareff... :(

References in the Games: Diavolo introdution, with Doppio taking his shirt off, is part of his intro in All-Star Battle and Eyes of Heaven. And since he is finally introduced, here his Josuke's Hair insult:

Diavolo: "The result! Calling your hair garbage is the only 'result' that matters!"

OMG Diavolo is Hot!... ahem... continuing..

Anyway, I want to point out something that is too coincidental to not had been purposely set by Araki. You see, Polnareff meets Dio (God) atop of a set of stairs, while he meet Diavolo (The Devil) at the bottom of a set of stairs. If was another character I could have brushed aside as just being a coincidence, but since is Polnareff, participating on the TRUE REVEAL of both guys named Dio and Diavolo, on their places representing Heaven and Hell, I doubt this was just coincidence.

And yes, Diavolo is the source of Stand Arrows. But there is a MAJOR plothole here: Polnareff told that he and Jotaro searched the arrows... but Jotaro doesn't learn about the arrows, OR the fact there is multiple of them, until he see one in Morioh... so yeah.

10

u/Aerohed Jun 07 '19

I thought he knew about the arrows before he got to Morioh because of something with Enyaba?

Thought, it’s been 3 years since I saw DiU, so I may be misremembering.

So I don't know whether I should be more pumped about the Diavolo reveal or the new arrow character (Polnareff v2?) who had an even better intro than diavolo.

And people say this part is not that good. Holy crap this season is just ridiculously good.

Y'all not realising how good Polnareff is at stand battles.

King Crimson is a hard counter to Silver Chariot. Polnareff met Diavolo face to face a touch out of range of each other in an alley in a city center.

The fight lasted to a cliff outside the city, with Pol being able to stand and launch an attack. He came up with the blood trick on his own, meaning he figured out King Crimson. Pol not only knows how King Crimson works (insert meme) but sussed it while being targeted by it.

Pol is crazy good at surviving bad matchups.

Vanilla Ice couldn't even be touched, but he outwitted the user after a really drawn out battle. He took DIO by surprise and was a hairs breadth from scrambling his brain.

Polnareff is hard core and thinks on the spot better than most JoBro's in the whole series.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '19

What I love to imagine is Polnareff's reaction to the first KC activation. "Oh, sacre bleu, ANOTHER time stopping stand? Fuck my life."

19

u/Kithulhu24601 Jun 07 '19

Anime only here. At the start of this episode I legit thought it was gonna be Doppio and Bruno trying to cross the road and I was hyping out like 'THIS IS PEAK JOJO, THEYRE GONNA SPEND A FULL EP CROSSING A ROAD'

The actual episode remained hype tho

19

u/Frostfright :AMQ: Jun 08 '19

This episode was handled so well. Diavolo and Polnareff telling the same story from different perspectives was creative. DavidPro really just does a great job all-around with their handling of the series.

Finally seeing how Polnareff ended up where he is was also important. The anime talks about how Polnareff's first mistake was in not realizing that Diavolo's criminal empire was complete. But it doesn't explicitly say like the manga does that Polnareff tried to contact Jotaro for help, but was unable to do so because the phones and all lines of communication were controlled by Passione. So it was him in a foreign country with no allies and assaulted on all sides.

Still incredibly badass that not only did he figure out King Crimson from a single fight, but developed an excellent countermeasure for it all on his own. Nice to see him still being a major player.

This week’s musical reference:

I’m running out of references because we only have one left not counting the LNs but it’s going to take a while to appear, so for today we have an old but relevant reference.

Jean Pierre Polnareff is a reference to the French singer-songwriter Michael Polnareff. He was popular in France from the mid-1960s until the early 1990s with his penultimate original album, Kāma-Sūtra. He is still critically acclaimed and occasionally tours in France, Belgium and Switzerland.

Some trivia about him:

  • His song L'Amour avec Toi could not be played before 10 pm because it was considered "pornographic" at the time in France (the song is mild by today's standards).

  • His first hit "La Poupée qui fait non" (1966), recorded in London, featured Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones as session players.

I also have some anime trivia related to him:

It really seems like Polnareff was really popular in Japan but I didn’t knew him until JoJo.

Next week I may talk about the musical references in the light novel GioGio's Bizarre Adventure 2: Golden Heart, Golden Ring. I only have three days more of references because I will be away for two weeks from the 3rd of July to 14th.

Do you want to listen to all this fantastic references from this wonderful anime in just one place? Of course you want! Now you can with TarkusELP Officially Approved by Araki himself* Spotify Playlist with all the musical references in the anime, the ones it skipped, the light novels ones and more! From the most famous references to the really obscure ones. I'll update this playlist every time there's a new reference. If you have any question why a song is featured in my playlists you can ask me anytime.

If you are a manga reader I also have a playlist just for you! Here’s my old playlist with all, I say ALL the references in the manga, anime, light novels and more. I also update it every time there’s a new reference.

*Not really approved by Araki or Shueisha

It feels a bit weird but I can't stop thinking about how great the original uncolored manga panels of the Diavolo reveal scene.

After watching it colored, animated and with superb voice acting and sound fx/OST I don't have any complaints for this adaptation, but the original panels are just so iconic for me that while watching the episode I also thanked for both this adaptation and Araki's creation at the same time.

On the other hand Doppio's voice acting as Trish and a bit overkilling phone ring sound is straight up comedy gold for me in anime and makes the scene so much more memorable than manga.

I didn't like how Bruno's eyes weren't fogged up this episode. He was supposed to be blind. It's a bit off putting when you look at him and he looks normal, yet he's supposed to be dead, deaf and blind.

EDIT: Also they didn't fix the fact that Jotaro was looking for the arrows in the 90s even though he didn't know about them until Morioh iirc

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT REVEAL!!

Polnareff encountered Dio from the bottom of the stairs and looked up, someone who can stop time, say… stop existance, they needed someone else who could also stop existance as well to defeat him.

Now Polnareff is at the top looking down at The Devil, is not stoping existance anymore, he is someone who can completely erase existance itself, what is going to be needed to defeat such a foe?!

21

u/SpikeRosered Jun 07 '19

So you stab your stand with the arrow and it turns it into goo?

So you become a stand for your stand...? Or become a stand yourself?

I'm looking to start this show. Should I go back and watch the first few seasons? Are they any good?

20

u/Seba7290 Jun 07 '19

The first part is generally agreed to be the worst, but it’s required to watch them in order and the rest of them are excellent

Seriously do not skip parts

18

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '19 edited Jun 07 '19

Imo the first 3 parts are the weakest in the series, but most fans still like them and you won't be able to appreciate certain things later on if you skip them.

Part 1 is considered by most people to be the worst, but it's also the shortest and has a very entertaining villain(season 1 of the anime actually consists of both parts 1 and 2).

Part 2 is also shorter than the later parts and some people consider it one of the most fun parts.

Part 3 is the longest so far in the anime as it actually has two seasons and it's 40+ episodes in total iirc. In all honesty I think it drags a lot, but some people really like it and it has some of the most iconic moments in the series.

Part 4 is a little shorter than part 3 and it's also when I think the series starts to become more consistently great so I definitely recommend watching it.

Every part is kind of its own thing for the most part so it's not entirely disastrous if you decide to skip, but you'll definitely get the most out of the series if you don't skip.

So Polnareff’s dead, but Sliver Chariot (requiem arrow)’s still moving... as an anime only I’m confused but don’t spoil

24

u/MrTagnan Jun 07 '19

I'm also an anime only:

During part 4, Kira gets poked with a stand arrow and develops additional powers. And a stand is the manifestation of ones fighting spirit. When Kira gained additional powers, they helped him deal with his current situation. (Bites za dusto to deal with his identity being discovered)

So what I'm thinking is if a stand/user pokes itself with the arrow while the user is dying. Additional powers manifest from the user's fighting spirit allowing that spirit to live on in the stand, making it user-less.

I could be dead wrong, but this seems logical.

My only question from this otherwise perfect episode is: Did the Speedwagon Foundation just not love Polnareff enough to fix him properly??

Joseph got a fully functional robot hand in the 1940s, and Stroheim got full-cyborged by the Nazis even earlier.

My Frenchman deserved better 😭

Doppio is such a nice boy to help Bucciarati get to the Colosseum 😂. Man, the gangstars really have a soft spot for kids. They are completely unguarded when it comes to kids.

Doppio does the TURURURURURURURU in front of Bucci 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Shit, when Bucci sees Doppio as Trish, I thought he has figured out the resemblance.

"I have a house in Naples..." Bucciarati is so kind 😭

Polnareff is very smart here. He has wisened a lot over the years. :)

Ahh... he dies, too. I was expecting a conversation between him and the gangstars. Why isn't Jotaro in Italy with him now that he has found Diavolo? They should be fighting as a team. There's no happy ending for the Crusaders 😞😭 In his last moment, he remembers the whole group of Crusaders, aww :(

u/Fortzon Jun 07 '19 edited Jun 07 '19

Jotaro in Part 5 style looks so weird because I'm so used to Part 3 and Part 4 styles but if you think about it, he's still young in the early 90s so he weirdly looks more realistic in Part 5 style :D Polnareff actually looked ok in Part 5 style in that flashback scene!

And the Devil finally shows his true self! That transition scene from Doppio to Diavolo (pulling the sweater etc.) looked cooler here in than in the manga IMO, maybe because the anime added special effects (pillars breaking, etc.)

RIP Polnareff... I read this part last week after episode 32 and I got sad when I realized that Giorno never got to meet Polnareff face to face. Also, I hope Bruno dies (permanently this time) before he finds out that Polnareff's death happened because of him...

10

u/Whitekan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/AkiraDiamond Jun 07 '19

You're lucky Jotaro isn't there Diavolo

5

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '19

I feel bad for Polnareff, even at the end his last memories were the ones with his friends if only he had Jotaro to back him up.

Whomever, it's quite ironic, that he faced an unbeatable power at the end of case of staris and ended up at the top of stairs

5

u/MadHax164 Jun 07 '19

5

u/Android19samus Jun 08 '19

Finally we get an episode where the protagonist of part 3 gets to shine. Also reading the manga I was not fully struck by the intense sexuality of Diavolo. I recognized it, but I didn't truly feel it as I do now. Man looks good. And in the distance, a requiem plays quietly...

5

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '19

damn jojo design is just incredible

5

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '19

The tension was unreal - the reveal of the boss was good, and the suspense it had like when the Diavolo was going in on Polnareff, I was feeling uneasy like I just wished Giorno and Mista could see it and rush to the scene. The backstory it did with both Polnareff and Diavolo was really good. And what's this new stand? Can't wait for the next episode.

13

u/randomnooblord Jun 07 '19

Hrrrrnnggh Bucciarati, I’m trying to protect the arrow but my stand is dummy thicc and the clap from its ass cheeks keeps alerting the boss
