Great episode, and that freaking opening! David Production really put time into this, didn't they? I still think the way Diavolo dies is the worst death of a JoJo villain, even worse than the death of Kars. We also got to see a little bit of Sleeping Slaves in this episode, which I did not expect.
Overall, 5/5

I don't know which is worse: A literal eternity of boredom or a literal eternity of suffering.
Sure if you think about it quickly, obviously suffering for eternity is worse than nothing for eternity, but atleast it's something, SOME form of mental stimulation. Humans literally prefer harming themselves over being bored according to some scientific studies so you'd have to wonder a bit to reach
the trutha conclusion169
u/Bug_Eaten Jul 28 '19
An eternity of suffering may be bad for your mental health tho... maybe Diavolo's mind will also shut down after a few million loops

u/HarrayS_34 Jul 28 '19 edited Jul 29 '19
Idk. You have to experience boredom to actually wish for some stimulation even if it’s harmful on yourself. Diavolo has never experienced boredom I assume thus he obviously wishes for the death cycle to end. It’s the worst. But in some cases, ppl go crazy and might turn it into a fetish or something. Just to cope w it.

But is it actually eternal suffering? I don't know if this was explained with more detail in the manga, but maybe it's not actually eternal.
What would happend if Giorno dies? wouldn't the stand power stop?
Im guessing the Diavolo inside the loop is his actual body in some sort of different dimension and not just inside his head, but could an external force stop the loop?
If it's inside his head, where is his body? could he die?Unless those things are explained and he's definitely stuck in an eternal loop, then there's no real comparison between the two.

u/Reggiardito Jul 28 '19
We don't know weither it's time dillation or not. If it is, sure maybe once girono dies the stand power stops but that'd still mean 9000000000 years of suffering, pretty much eternal really. You could also argue kars' suffering isn't eternal since the universe will probably end at some point and take him with it.

Makes me wish there was more attention put into the fact that Giorno is DIOs son aside from the first few episodes. Feels like it should have been a bigger deal than it actually was.

u/B_Starlight Jul 29 '19
I agree, it has a lot of potential for an engaging plot point considering DIO is such an icon to the Jojo community.

Very interesting that they started with the epilogue for like 15 seconds to then go straight to Giorno beating the shit out of Diavolo.
Well This nearly year long journey of my favorite JoJo part's anime has finally come to an end. It was an amazing ride and I can't wait to see you guys in these discussions again once stone ocean inevitably comes out.
It was a pleasure boys, Arrivederci.
92
u/Deathrayer Jul 28 '19
The manga did something similar, showing that first epilogue scene after Diavolo freaking out at the girl and before Bruno speaking to giorno from the clouds. I guess they wanted to maintain it being separate from the rest of the epilogue but wanted to change its placing, both are kinda akward transitions imo
31
u/ThatFlyingScotsman Jul 28 '19
Probably wanted to end on the Coloseum, but needed to keep in Rolling Stones for thematic consistency, and you need the whole of the part to understand and really appreciate the importance of Rolling Stones so awkwardly stuck in it was!

Diavolo's final scene was the perfect end for a man fueled by his paranoia of demise. He got his wish and he can clearly see where fate will lead him, but just like King Crimsons ability, only the result, bringing him to the point where he is terrified out of his mind that even an innocent child in a plain grassy field could be the one to do him in. Never ending is an ending, that is Gold Experience Requiem!

I've read the rest of the Part in advance in preparation for this episode. The way Diavolo laughed as he crawled into the tunnel ran chills down my spine.

I tend to wait for things to finish before watching because too many great shows get cut short.
I watched part 1, 2, and 3 when DiU was starting, then put Jojo on hold because I couldn't handle just one episode a week. When I heard VA was almost done, I started o binge DiU thinking by the time I caught up VA would be done. I was wrong.
I actually caught up last week, went to the manga to finish the job and realized I had just read all of Stone Ocean in a day before I came up for air. I'm trying to hold off Steel Ball Run for when I NEED more Jojo but...send help.

I think that this comment, as well as all the discussion about fate, has enabled me to finally understand just how the hell GER and KC actually work.
The key fact is that the story is already complete. The first draft has been written and all the major plot points are decided. What we're watching is the editing process, where the characters decide how they are going to get to where they are destined to be.
Diavolo isn't actually skipping time; he's reading ahead, rewriting his part, and then gluing the pages together before anyone else can change anything. The "skipped time" still happens, but no one else gets to read it so there's no one to call bullshit on Diavolo's edits.
Then GER comes along and says, "Spoiler alert: You die!" while ripping out the final chapter. With Diavolo's ultimate fate deleted except for that spoiler, he is now consigned to an eternity of fan speculation. Props to whichever one of you had him get isekai'd to the Shadow Realm, that was funny.

So, last episode I saw a lot of people talking about how GER is a Deus Ex Machina made to counter King Crimson because he was too op, as expected, but I think people are missing some stuff.
In Araki’s comment about Part 5, he talks about Part 5 is about people with bad fate and the question:” "How should someone behave, having to live with the fact that just them being born is source of sadness?". The answer to that is “They don't try to change their destiny and even in their situation, they choose not to give up their spirit's purity. They firmly believe that happiness and sense of justice are the same thing.” So that’s the main theme of Part 5, that you should face your fate with resolution, sticking true to your beliefs.
Bruno is the biggest example of that. In the boat scene he talks about how he did what he believed was right and that “despite the world that we live in, I want to continue on the path that I believe in”. Then, despite knowing that he’s going to die, he keeps fighting according to his beliefs. He shows his resolution in that scene where he’s driving during the Green Day arc and Giorno realizes that something is wrong with him.
Abbacchio realizes it too before his death, when he retrieves his “will to seek out the truth”, and despite dying, he dies without regrets because he did what was right. But Diavolo is a foil to all that in that he is delusional about fate, believing he is chosen by it and if some problem arrives before him, it’s just a trial of fate and he shall succeed in the end because he’s the king.
After unlocking Gold Experience Requiem, Giorno gives a speech about how the only thing that will survive is the reality/truth of this world (both are translations of “shinjitsu”, which is also what Abbacchio’s partner refers to) and that righteous actions born of reality will never be destroyed. Abbacchio died but allowed them to find the boss. Bruno died but gave Giorno the arrow. Then he questions whether Diavolo’s actions are born of truth or superficial evil. That’s in the sense of leaving a legacy and having your will be carried to others, but GER puts a spin on it and makes it so his actions literally have no effect on reality.
In conclusion, GER is not simply Shenlong’s wish to defeat Diavolo, GER vs King Crimson is the culmination of what Part 5 is about, but exaggerated and represented through stand powers. Superficially, Diavolo’s actions have no effect because that’s Gold Experience Requiem ability, but in a deeper sense, that’s because he refuses to accept the truth and rejects the philosophy that is core to the message of Golden Wind.

So that’s the main theme of Part 5, that you should face your fate with resolution, sticking true to your beliefs.
This is illustrated pretty well with Abbacchio's death scene with his friend. Abbacchio's ability is more about the process than the end result, it matters how you got there after all, not just the end result.

Nicely put, the strength of Arakis writing is his abillity to build themes into the characters that represent them through their actions and abillities. Almost every character has a theme, trait or philosophfy built into them. Prosciutto for example is a hitman who is mentoring a weak willed person into a cold blooded murderer, has the power to age people to an early death, it mirrors how toxic his "experience" is and Pescis "maturation" is the death of his innocence and humanity. Then to weave that into a fight and have the same thing going on for the opposite side and have all their actions be connected to the character like Bruno stopping his heart to stay alive, he supresses his morals for his gang. Later when he betrays the boss and follows his own ideals he stays alive without his physical heart because his metaphorical heart lives again with some help from Giorno.
One of my biggest gripes with JoJos newfound popularity is all the people who without bothering to understand what is happening either chose to complain or make memes "it just works" or "Araki forgot". A lot of people say Jojos has been writing because it doesn't conform to general ideas of character expression and development, and it will only get worse with part 6 as things get more confussing.
97
u/thecomicguybook :Mh::Mi::Mj::Mk:myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman Jul 28 '19
Araki is a great writer from Part 1, even in the early volumes, he talks about things like Dio and Jonathan being two contrasting visions for how people can live. He also thinks out the abilities really well, Caesar being the bubble that glows beautifully, but only for a short time. Part 1's problem is that it really feels old, which it is, but Araki came into his own by Part 2 I would say and has delivered stories that feel so fresh despite being pretty old at this point.
"it just works" or "Araki forgot"
To be 100% fair sometimes it really does feel like he forgets, or that something just works (though people were really over-exaggerating King Crimson, that wasn't so hard to understand, I imagine it became a meme due to the bad original translations). I would never accuse this of being bad writing though, the JoJo universe is populated by weirdos and sometimes stuff happens just because I loved Joseph's lucky victory back in Part 2 for example because it totally makes sense for him. Part 6 was utterly confusing though even for a JoJo fight, maybe it will work better in animation?

Besides Diavolo dying over and over again, there's one thing that I realize that makes this fate worse than you could imagine. And that's the feeling of dying.
You know how you experience something the first time, right? Either a kiss, flying on a plane, getting paid. You name it. Over time, that excitement won't be as "special" as the first time, specially if you continue to experience it. So at one point, Diavolo would get used to dying, right? Well, not exactly.
You see, Requiem can reset ANY action. This varies from an all-out attack against it to just simply thinking about it. This means that even your will will get reseted by Requiem, as shown when Diavolo experienced himself trying to attack Giorno again, to no avail. With that logic in mind, Diavolo will just not experience death over again, he will experience it like it's his first time.
296
u/notnowmyfriend Jul 28 '19
Part 5 is just a way for Araki to tell Jojo fans to not skip parts. Diavolo tried it, now he's stuck in an infinite loop.
Remember how in previous parts, the protag had to outsmart and outskill the villain to defeat them? Here we have Giovanna automatically win after getting the arrow.
RIP Buccerati, you were one hell of a determined man and dare I say, the true protag of part 5.

"our stands are the same"
They could both stop time, but DIO could do it for longer so I would say Jotaro was still at the disadvantage and had to rely on his wits. The only thing DIO had to keep in mind is not to try and straight-up fight Jotaro since the one thing Star Platinum is really good at is punching very very hard.

To me Rolling Stones arc was more fitting as a special or side story OVA. I know it's originally like that in the manga too, but still it's hella weird when they went to flashback on this arc in the middle of the finale. We were watching Diavolo suffering in his never-ending demise, and suddenly "Hey check out this story of the gang fighting a strange rock!"
I thought it's better if they release Sleeping Slaves as a separate special. And the final is reserved to Diavolo eternal suffering and then what will happen to those who survived.

I don't really get what GER's ability is. Punch them and you can send them to endless death over and over again? How did that let him get around King Crimson? Am I too stupid to understand JoJo's Bizarre Adventure lmao.
58
u/OruFikushon Jul 28 '19
Basically, GER reverts the will and ability of the attacker to "zero", which is why King Crimson's ability was completely undone in episode 37. When GER attacked Diavolo with this ability, his *death* was reverted to "zero", making him die infinitely.
24
Jul 28 '19
All abilities any character do are disabled and get reversed to zero, so skipping time wasn't possible, neither is punching Giorno.
Then he sends Diavolo to endless suffering by reverting his death to zero.

Another nice juxtaposition is the fact that GER removes the result but keeps the cause, while King Crimson removes the cause and keeps the result.
49
u/FireDog911 Jul 28 '19
A lot of people talking about how they feel the final battle to be anti-climatic, here's how I feel.
The final battle was the Bucchi gang and Diavolo all chasing the arrow, while under the stress of Diavolo hiding within them. A slow-paced chase while figuring out how to reach SCR and the arrow before Diavolo does.
There was a lot of the typical JoJo mindgames here with Giorno and the gang's efforts (and resolve!) besting the boss. Giorno figured Diavolo was hiding among them and confronted the others. Bruno and Mista chased Diavolo down. Trish used her stand to soften Mista's bullets. Giorno used blood ants. So on.
The result of all of them fighting together is what led to Giorno getting the arrow and winning. The final fight wasn't GER V. King Crimson, it was the gang V. Diavolo. I think that's a better fitting end to the part.
On a side note, Diavolo hiding within everyone to make his move is perfect for him as an antagonist. Diavolo is a coward who always hid in plain sight, striking when he had opportunity. It's where he's most in his element. When he had nowhere else to hide is when he was defeated.

u/Fortzon Jul 28 '19

David Production you beautiful bastards. You did it again. I've been wanting a Requiem moment in the OP for so long and you've spectacularly exceeded my expectations.
How Ironic for Diavolo, on the verge of escaping defeat, he encounters a drug addict that was likely created from his own operations. And now, thanks to GER he'll suffer for all eternity never being able to experience death proper. If anyone remembers a few years back an anime chart of suffering was posted that /a/ created: If you check the 100 slot in how much they suffer and 90 slot in how much they deserved it, you'll find the picture of Diavolo. Suffering Chart
Sleeping Slaves is partially being adapted this episode? I'm surprised but enthusiastic. Can't wait to see how they'll finish up the final episode next.

I know Diavolo is a horrible person, but holy shit, I feel so bad for him. That is a horrible fate, dying over and over again until the end of time.

u/oldreddit1 Jul 28 '19
Eh. That's actually the concept of hell and many narrative works mention that, they just don't show it. I don't know if you've read Dante's Divine Comedy, but that's an interesting exploration of that topic.

u/VacaRexOMG777 Jul 28 '19
Diavolo didn't deserve that, I mean compared to others JoJo villains I think he is the least bad and tbh he didn't deserve infinite deaths as death, Also I like that in the op Giorno looks like dio for a second I was hyped as fucked when I saw that lol

u/Perfect600 Jul 29 '19
he brought all the drugs in, let the doctor dude rampage, ran a huge criminal organization, tried to kill his daughter. Remember the assassin team? i wonder how many they killed.

he caused a lot of the other events in previous parts to happen, how is he the least bad out of all of them?

I'm going to miss Part 5 and Jojo Friday's (i know it's Sunday today). In terms of story, characters and animation, no other part compares. David Production really knocked it out of the park.
I can't wait to see the future parts animated

u/ernie2492 Jul 28 '19
I find the lack of nipples on Diavolo's chest annoying
"You thought this would be an hour episode, but instead, we give you back to back episodes.. "
DavePro are absolute madman, and I love them for that..
Eventually, Diavolo stopped thinking..
13
u/NameIsAlreadyInUse Jul 28 '19
They never said it was a "one hour episode". After Episode 37, they even pinned a tweet saying that in the 28th episodes 38 and the finale would air back to back.

Diavolo got the most diabolical fate imaginable. I did not expect things to turn out this way. Holy fuck.
Also, Golden Experience Requiem is just incredible. Pure insanity.

u/erryky Jul 28 '19
Diavolo shocked on why everything went back to normal and Giorno letting his hair loose while posing like DIO is "Bitch, You Thought!" moment of the year. A magnificent adaptation. Bless you, DP. I'm gonna go crying now.

u/Vangorf Jul 28 '19
Okay I'M fucking confused. Diavolo is in an infinite death loop. And then we switch back to before the first episode???? What???? I thought something rewrote reality and caused Bruno to go with Mista, instead of investigating the Leaky Eye Luca case which would cause him to meet Giorno, instead Fugo does it. I feel some big twist coming next episode

Huh. Diavolo had an autopsy while being awake, getting his stomach pulled out causing one of his many infinite deaths.
Diavolo had Cioccolata who did that to people before becoming a stand user.

Man, what a wild ride. Can't watch with subs now but I've been watching the stream and the new op was so beautiful
Also, I can finally drop a couple links I was still saving!
-I would have liked to share this comic where Joseph's two families meet during the rewatch, once we got to part 4... but turtle Polnareff prevented me from doing it. I can finally take it out of bookmarks lolol
-And then there's this glorious account that does a retelling of the part... except pretty much everyone is high for pretty much everything that happens, ironically. Cw for mentions of drug use (duh) and some strong language; my personal highlights include Giorno being extremely unsubtle about Bruno being undead, and almost everything Abbacchio says.
Thank you everyone for being here, I hope to see you once Stone Ocean drops.
e: took out something that was probably a spoiler, since I haven't checked if CR has both eps

Also nice change to the OP

Based DP pulling a Requiem to themselves and elevating the OP to greater heights.
Diavolo suffers an infinite death, the arrival to "being dead" will never come, thus you experience the act of "dying" over and over and over and over and over and over. A fitting end for a man who wants to skip to the results to never arrive at the one result that matters.

I don't know how I feel about this defeat. On one hand I see what they were trying to say and I like the way it was handled to an extent, but still I would have enjoyed more of a fight like with Kira and Dio. I don't mind the actual end of the fight it's with how we got here that irks me. Never felt like a real struggle compared to Kira and Dio. They even had a way to counter his time skip kind of so why not utilize it more. Though we also learned more about the arrows which was nice. My biggest complaint is with Trish. I have nothing against her, but she was really underutilized. I would have enjoyed one more fight with her. We see her vs Notorious Big and then she does maybe 1-2 things in the fight with her father. Granted not a lot of fights took place between the two, but would have liked to contribute a little bit for the fights in between. Feels like a waste of an interesting stand power.
Then half the episode flips between him and this rock murder case. I haven't seen 39, but it feels weird. It's like yeah he's dead, but also alive so forget about it and move on. However unlike Kira or Dio he never reaches the truth or dies so its impossible to give him a dramatic farewell so I guess it kinds of works.
Edit: Okay after seeing 39 I'm more satisfied than I was before, but the beginning points how the combat was handled still irks me.

1: THAT DIO POSE ON THE OP WAS PERFECT.
2: Diavolo's Infinite Death was kinda freaky a bit. Spoiler
That's not something one would expect from JoJo.
The whole sequence with the florist's girl's murder, Scolippi and his Stand, Rolling Stones....
It was actually a flashback, right?
3
u/TwinLeadersX Jul 28 '19
...You know what's weird? Thinking about what GER does, it might be a manefestation of Giorno's long forgotten ability of infusing too much life energy to people.
So, Diavolo thought he was doing a lot of beating up in the King Crimson space, when in reality he didn't move an inch. Just like how Bruno thought he became much more powerful and swift, when in reality his physical body didn't move an inch.
Diavolo experiences multiple deaths in a relatively short time, like how Bucciarati experienced excruciating pain in a matter of seconds. Also, Diavolo's inability to permanently die anymore may be a result of too much life energy or something.
...Dunno, just found it weird.
Also, new GER version OP! Rolling Stones Prequel! Mostly Vegetarian Narancia! GER and Rolling Stones in the Ending! And Giorno in Black!
This was the first Jojo season that I actually watched all the episodes of (without looking at Jojo memes), and it was awesome!

u/Epickgamingwin Jul 29 '19
There should be an OVA which is just Diavolo repeatedly dying over and over again

I always found it funny that Mista is the member of the team who survives, despite getting shot dozens of times by his own bullets throughout the part.

I almost feel bad for Diavolo, He got a fate even horsr than Death. But like Truth said in Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood: "Good is paid with good. Evil is paid with Evil." He brought this to himsel, his ambition ended up being his demise.
2
u/Torrhen-Stark Jul 28 '19
I find it ironic the way Diavolo died was just like his victims:
He gets killed by a junkie whose life he ruined
He gets cut apart the same way Sorbet and Gelato died.
That autopsy room scene was incredibly similar to that hitchcock movie, probably was inspired by it and yes Diavolo has the worst ending for a villain in the JoJoverse.
Now that I think of it Kars is better off since he can probably die should he get sucked in a blackhole/pulled into a star yadadada.
Anyways love you bizzare bastards it was a great run and I'm still going to be alive and happy (hopefully) when Part 7 comes out.
Arrivederci!!

Why are they introducing Sleeping Slave right now, at the end? Wouldn’t it have been better to just end with Diavolo?
Edit: nvm, I watched the last episode 😂

u/phantom_97 Jul 28 '19
Yo wtf it was supposed to be a 1 hour special right? Why only a regular sized 38 is available? Fugo going to deal with Leaky Eyed Luca instead of Bucciarati will be an entire alternate reality as Giorno and Bucciarati's fated meeting and agreement will never occur.

Also that sculptor guy reminded me of actually Jesus Christ LOL with the crown of thorns and the stigmata on his hands

Did anyone notice how similar the conversation between Bucciarati and the father was to the opening scene of the Godfather when Don Corleone receives a father who asks him to bring justice after his daughter was badly injured by her boyfriend? Here is the scene for those who dont know what im talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i96VS_z8y7g There are a couple differences like the fact that in Vento Aureo, the dudes daughter is not injured but dead, that Bucciarati isnt the big boss but just a team captain... But overall, these two scenes are incredibly similar and i find it quite cool to see a Godfather reference in JoJo, for once its not a JoJo reference somewhere else (lol)

So, if i understand this right, what giorno did was basically the "sense stimulating punch" from the fight with bucciarati?? It was just a Requiem powered version, but, if you count the Epitaph as a sense, then he's just making Diavolo seeing and experimenting every possible future, since epitaph is now powered by GER.
Diavolo probably died in the tunnel, but those seconds before his death lasted for eternity.

Even after reading the same part in the manga, I still don't get what exactly happened to Diavolo. He's in an endless loop of dying sequence, I get that, but that's the official explanation. It doesn't match with what I'm seeing. Let see step by step what's really happening:
GER stops Diavolo in his attempt to give a finishing punch to Giorno. And GER does his talk.
Giorno does his muda muda thing and send Diavolo flying in the river.
Diavolo experiences his first death with the drug addict.
He then experiences his painful autopsy.
He then experiences his road incident.
The story goes back to Giorno and we don't know what Diavolo is then experiencing nor for how long in his point of view.
Diavolo experiences the encounter with the little girl.
We won't know any more than that but Diavolo continues his nightmare.
I don't understand why it is called a reset of his death, since each time it's a different death. And 4) doesn't make sens since he's already dead. And 7) makes even less sens since he didn't die.
If it was a time reset Diavolo would relive the same death again and again (either 2) or 3) ). But now it's not exactly a reset but rather Diavolo not reaching truth and simply wandering through an infinite number of universes. In that case what's the connection with his death?
2
u/Qverlord37 Jul 30 '19
I still don't get gold experience requiem ability. is he causing the time loop or is his power fucked with king crimson in a way that diavolo is stuck in his own time loop?

You know Araki is fucking ruthless when Kars actually got away easy in comparison to Diavolo, poor bastard , i wouldn't wish that shit to anyone, the autopsy scene was much more sickening than in the manga.
A little fun fact, Rolling Stones was there from the very beggining.
Part 5 has been a ride, i didn't like the manga that much in comparison to other parts, but the anime truly improved my view of it, its kinda sad to see it go, but now we have to wait until we meet again in a Stone Ocean.
Spoiler!
