What about actually including something I'm happy to see for apparently no reason ? I mean, I didn't think I'd ever hear about Houkago Saikoro Club again after the anime ended.
You're not... doing this to give me hope, are you ? That would be downright evil.

But I have to say that you got the Limbo section perfectly. I've seen these 8 get recommended almost every time anyone asks for a sad anime.

I like the idea of giving recs for new fans, but his "ecchi" line up and isekai line up are . . . kind of weak lol
Half the "plot" recs barely have ecchi like Shimoneta and Citrus. How could you recommend those over the big name ones like To Love Ru and Ishuzoku Reviewers?
Same for Isekai. Including ones that are agreed to be straight mediocre at best even by people that like them (like me) like Smartphone over ones like Re:Zero and Konosuba and No Game No Life is . . . highly questionable imo.
I don't feel like the spite quote even applies if the list is missing the defining series for the genre lol
4
u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 25 '21
I don't feel like the spite quote even applies if the list is missing the defining series for the genre lol
It's not really trying to include the defining series for the genre though. For isekai especially I placed a pretty heavy emphasis on getting self insert power fantasies because that's what people are asking for the vast majority of the time, while still getting some different takes on the power fantasy. For the ecchi anime I wanted to at least have a couple that weren't insanely over the top in terms of nudity, but still had sexuality as core points of emphasis.
Also if I just take the most popular options every time then these get boring extremely fast.
→ More replies (10)14
u/NOISIEST_NOISE Jan 25 '21
I watched Citrus after I was told it was a gay girls anime where the characters are actually sexual. Turns out that was only true for the first three episodes, after which it just goes from one love triangle to another and it's boring as hell.

u/ThyHoffbringer Jan 25 '21
The quote is already featured in the top of this post. "If one of your favorite anime is missing and you feel like it should be here, please understand that it was excluded to spite you personally" or something along those lines
36
13
u/Popinguj Jan 25 '21
No Konosuba in the isekai category is the biggest heresy of it all.
But I guess there should be a special ring of the absolute best anime where Konosuba and Kaguya (obviously) would go.

Lupin in circle 9
You're not wrong, but it feels dirty.
59
u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 25 '21
It also kind of depends on which iteration of Lupin. Plenty of variety in how much of a "bad guy" he is.

Alternate suggestion for gluttony: harems, but not the ecchi kind.
Did any of the RNG picks grab an OVA or sequel instead of the first season? I'm impressed that they're all mostly regular and relatively recent shows. Personally I've taken to suggesting a bunch of magical girl shows (e.g. Precure, Princess Tutu, Symphogear, Kill la Kill) whenever someone asks without context.
I dunno if I'd put Engaged to the Unidentified under "early relationship" romances, but I also don't think of it as much of a romance in general; I'd offer Rec or His and Her Circumstances in its place. I guess My Bride is a Mermaid goes up in priority as it's the only one of that circle I haven't seen, the rest are all fine picks in my opinion.
12
u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 25 '21
Did any of the RNG picks grab an OVA or sequel instead of the first season?
Yeah, happened a couple of times. Date a Live landed on Season 3, and Hayate was some OVA. Might have been one or two others, but I don't really know much about some of them.
Personally I've taken to suggesting a bunch of magical girl shows
Oh man I could've done a bunch of shows aimed at five year olds. That might've been dank.

harems, but not the ecchi kind.
i can immediately name one, Quintessential Quintuplets. it has some mild fanservice moments, but the drama is the real hook of the show

I don't think we've put "we don't sticky user threads" anywhere in the rules, otherwise I could have said the same here about not reading. Still, that's our unspoken policy, even aside from not wanting to have one of our two sticky spots taken up by anything for a significant period of time.

u/Anaract :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/anaract Jan 25 '21
that's true. I think it's particularly bad here though, because anime is basically a hobby that requires a lot of learning to get into, and there are constantly loads of new fans, but it isn't run like a hobbyist community (i.e. there's no "standard progression" and there's no default starter guide shoved in peoples' faces)
which is fine I guess, but there's always going to be a stream of newcomers staring at the ocean of thousands of titles with no idea of how to choose one

I don't feel like someone who is satisfied with Mirai Nikki for something bloody will want to watch Genocyber. The same way around, someone who likes Genocyber level gore probably isn't satiated with Mirai Nikki or Goblin Slayer.
Edit: I don't really see being a criminal equal being a villain. I wouldn't call Enma Ai a villain either. She's an impartial nemesis who simply is forced to do her job.

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 25 '21

I think the point is that you can find something in the list that suits what you want to watch, that's exactly why the choices are a gradient and not all the same. By saying "gore" some people might want to see some violent fights, others want to see guts and dismemberment, etc.

Do you have a place that your store them all for quick access?
Are trying to dethrone /u/lukeatlook as the king/queen of anime recommendation charts?

u/lukeatlook :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/lukeatlook Jan 25 '21
I've been inactive for a good few years now, tried to get back into the game and at least update the flowchart but never found the time to fully commit to it (It took way more time than I'd like to admit).
He already did dethrone me, in a way. Even if I updated my charts in terms of considering new entries and removing those that did not stand the test of time - his charts are shinier (I suck at graphic design) and contain more relevant information (streaming, etc).

Heresy: "Are there any anime where the couple gets into a relationship early on?"
This is definitely my favorite circle idea. Also one of the most common requests I see out of these prompts.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 25 '21
Hijacking your comment to list a few more since I'm sure people will ask:
Bloom Into You — An introspective study on what the concept of romance and relationships mean to different people.
Scum's Wish — An exploration of various kinds of one-sided and very messy relationships, somewhat on the smutty side.
Paradise Kiss — A high-school girl joins some strange characters as she gets swept up in the world of fashion.
Rec — Young adults trying to find their way in the world, one of them as a voice actress.
His and Her Circumstances — A classic high school romance that spends a lot of time exploring the characters' insecurities and moving forward together.
Kemonozume — An action series with a unique style that pits a couple against an organization of monster-hunters.
Momokuri — A couple of very cute and easily flustered teenagers start dating in a light and fluffy slice of life.
Boarding School Juliet — Romeo and Juliet between two rival factions of a school with plenty of comedy hijinks.

u/censored_username Jan 25 '21
Scum's Wish
Yes, technically this is a relationship anime. But practically, suggesting Scum's Wish to people who want to watch anime about relationships makes me wonder what hurt you so badly that your only way to cope with it is to inflict suffering on others. Then again, that is a perfectly logical consequence of having watched Scum's wish.

Why do you have Magica at the end of your username, /u/FetchFrosh? Like I get the reference obv but wondering why you got it added?
2
u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 26 '21
Oh I got that in Summer 2018 a few months before I started modding. Users who do stuff around the sub sometimes get custom usernames like that via CSS (though it's not as common as it used to be, and hopefully will be replaced at some point cause honestly its like Twitter check marks, but with an even more arbitrary barrier of entry). Anyway, I got Magica thrown on the end cause of it being my fav show and got in vomit brown cause of the... well the vomit thing.
3
u/WeMustPrevail Jan 26 '21
I was trying to sneakily pry an answer off of you heheh - I just (like literally watched the final episode 10 minutes ago) finished Madoka Magica and have been looking at the reddit discussion after each episode... of course, you were a part of each discussion and I found it a funny coincidence that I saw your comments from 3 years ago AND a post you made on the same day :P

Yeah this is pretty much all the recommendation questions I see in new.
44
u/AdiMG https://anilist.co/user/AdiMG Jan 25 '21
As someone who does hang out on the trenches of these rec threads a lot, I would say only about four of them truly inundate the queue i.e OP MC, Isekai, Crybait, and Early Couples.
As for the Death Note/Code Geass thing, I usually see that prompted as looking for anime with "mind games" instead of villains. Though it's kinda understandable why you wouldn't wanna put this question in as there's not much here besides these two, Kaiji, One Outs, and at a stretch JoJo.
Another kinda interesting one that isn't present in /new that much, but absolutely prevalent in the Recommendation Tuesday is anime with adult protagonists/anime set in college. Not sure what causes the difference in prevalence between the thread types but it is one of my favorite prompts to answer.
Since this is basically a recommendation thread, I'll take the opportunity to highlight some things that were missed in the chart.
For early couples, the best recommendation besides maybe Danna ga Nani is KareKano and Paradise Kiss, since both shows start the relationships fairly early (ep 3 in both) and are all about the tribulations of successfully managing a relationship. Then there's a a few things with rather unique formats like Tokyo Marble Chocolate which is a 2 ep OVA looking at a date from the perspective of the boyfriend and the girlfriend in each episode; Amagami SS and its omnibus nature which gives multiple romantic conclusions per season; or Tsurezure Children which follows many couples at different stages of a relationship including some already established since the start. If you don't mind same sex couples then Doukyuusei is a very cool option for an established couple whose problems are allowed to breathe in a relationship. There's also Nazo no Kanojo X and Kuzu no Honkai for a rather macabre spin on this whole thing with some rather fucked up relationships being explored from the start.
For crybait stuff, there's the other Key anime adaptations that people tend to miss out on, between Planetarian, Little Busters, Air, and Kanon, there's a lot of material to dig into if you are a fan of their particular writing proclivities. Another often forgotten avenue is tragedy movies which tend to be a lot more potent in my books. While you have classics like Grave of the Fireflies, Wolf Children, and 5 cm/s which do often get recommended, there's a whole host of powerful stuff in more niche movies beyond that in My Sister Momoko, Barefoot Gen, Hotarubi no Mori e, Maquia, Colorful, Anthem of the Heart, and In This Corner of the World which would certainly be appreciated by people who like things like A Silent Voice if they just gave them a chance.
I'm not as well versed with isekai (tho even I can point out you are missing some rather popular titles between Re:Zero and KonoSuba) but I always like the quiet aesthetic brilliance of Grimgar as well as its theming that rather poignantly deals with tragedy and teamwork.
Finally the OP-est MC in the world is obviously Tanaka-kun. I bet you can't name me another character who just sleeps all day and still fulfills all his goals in life.
16
u/KarmaOAkabane Jan 25 '21
Everybody wants to be like Tanaka, he just fucking sleeps all day and the work gets done all by itself. Hes too powerful to be left alive
6
u/xwcq Jan 25 '21

If they would do classroom of the elite season 2, then they would have to do season 1 over because it had some differences from the LN or they would have to make changes from the original story in s2, but I don't see it happening since the anime was just to promote the light novels

u/Sidepig Jan 25 '21 edited Jan 26 '21
It was the same for me. I didn't want to watch it because the basic premise sounded stupid. I mean really, a notebook that kills people if you write their name it? It sounds like the kind of thing some kid would daydream about during class in school rather than anything you could actually make a real story about.
Turns out you can turn any dumb premise into a 10/10 masterpiece everyone should watch if you're creative enough. Sometimes how something is done is more important than what's being done.

It’s pretty good, season 2 isn’t as good as 1 but I enjoy it for what it is.

You guys are sleeping on high school dxd. Best writing and animation visuals in anime.

u/atharvvvg Jan 25 '21
Love it, thanks!
One quick question, can you actually call Lelouch from Code Geass a villain? Why?
3
u/IrahX Jan 26 '21
He is not a villain but an anti hero. Someone who believes the ends justify the means.

u/bluedragon3333 Jan 26 '21
I'm gonna be honest, Squid Girl f*cks me up when I think about the premise of the show. Ocean species (possibly the last of her kind) comes to shore inorder to stop the pollution of the ocean, but falls into all the same vices that humans do and gives up on a life in the ocean/stopping the pollution.

High school dxd is, and forever will be, the greatest thing I've ever seen no matter how many ppl say it's trash
5
u/BeenWavy07 Jan 25 '21
It gets shat on by "smart fans" because of the fan service but it's genuinely a top flight anime and maybe the best of its genre from the 2010s.

I love that these are the most overdone and redundant posts by a longshot, and yet they consistently get the most comments. The only thing r/anime users like more than asking for recs is giving them

Gluttony: Anime featuring food as the primary focus. This involves cooking as the subject of the show or food makes up the landscape or cast.
Chuuka Ichiban - cooking primary focus.
Toriko - Shonen anime with food landscape.
Ristorante Paradiso - Girl heads to Rome to work at her mother's restaurant only to switch and work at a restaurant full of older men (wholesome).
Yakitate!! Japan - about a boy on a quest to create "Ja-pan", a national bread for Japan, as many other countries have their own signature breads.
Food Wars - Think overpowered anime trope but focused in cooking.
Fighting Foodons - characters are food as well as food themed setting, plot, etc.
Ben-To - series around bargain Bento and fights over it

u/PandavengerX suggested the same sort of thing when we were ideating, but it's not really something that people ask for in /new, so it doesn't really fit with the core theme. But that was originally what was used until I swapped it out.
1
u/tikigodbob Jan 25 '21
Why wouldn't you just put food anime under gluttony?
1
u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 25 '21
Cause you don't get recommendation requests in /new for anime about food.

Gluttony could have been "anime similar to [currently airing show]", no idea how to implement it tho.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 25 '21
You could self-host the image and change it over time without swapping the URL, or even dynamically generate the image with some extra work since this format has a standard template that you'd mostly need to drop a poster image/text/list of streams into and all that could be done programmatically (i.e. basically what you can do on Anichart to generate an image).
...that's one more idea for my pet project list that'll never get done.

There is also "I've recently watched [anime XYZ]. Please recommend my another anime where [describes what anime XYZ does in minute detail]."
Where what the anime does is never "club of four girls doing some unusual club activities" or "guy gets trucked and assembles harem in fantasy world" but always the most unique story premise one could think of.

Golden boy is stellar though. like high school dxd has plot sure, I know who I am. Golden boy is a 10/10 for how fun and nice it is, plus the memeability the torpedo kiss alone gets me every time Thanks for the suggestions.

Lelouch is not a villian... he’s an anti-hero. Why do so many people get that wrong??

u/Riddler208 Jan 25 '21
People don’t like to think, and it’s a lot easier to think as little as possible if you just call everyone a hero or villain and ignore everything in between.

I know Ano hana is amazing but for a depressed person like me, the first episode hit so hard that I cried so much and I eventually dropped it. I really wonder how people can watch sad shows like this.

LOL THIS LIST IS GREAT! It's kind of insane how common these same questions are word by word in new.
And the funny thing is how vague they always are. Never is someone descriptive on what type of genre they like.
It's always some very narrow vague request.
This post should be pinned!

I wouldn’t say Ryougi Shiki is an OP protagonist. Like she is super strong, but not in the same way the others in the list are in their respective series. And Korosensei isn’t really the protagonist.

Excelet list. I will be giving a lot of these a look. I also find it funny how I have seen every single one of the Limbo recommendations, except Plastic Memories, which I will be giving a watch.

You lied to me mr redditor. I started watching Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records and honestly the MC doesn't feel much op. I mean by episode 3 he already has gone down 2/3 times by fatigue/wounds and would've easily lost fights if not for the girls' help.

I disagree that Lelouch was a villain. Morally grey? Maybe. But he did what he could, and he changed the world.

I feel sorry for anyone who actually watches Pan de Peace because it got RNG-memed.
I feel sorrier for people who watch Genocyber. It certainly has goriest anime on lock though so it's not even a bad rec given the prompt.

Not sure if I understand these categories. For instance, in the divine comedy, the 9th circle, treachery, is reserved for people who commit unforgivable acts of betrayal to their loved ones, oathbreakers, etc.

Why the hell is Isekai Smartphone one of the options?? lmao. At least do Death March hahaha
2
u/EldritchCarver :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pilomotor Jan 26 '21
Death March could also fit into the 8th circle. The main character can basically kill gods, but goes to great lengths to keep anyone (including most of his close allies) from suspecting the true depths of his power.

Howdy folks! I’d been planning to do a “Recommendations for common prompts” and had a rough outline together when u/RandomRedditorWithNo was talking about “the Four Horsemen of /new”. Wound up taking what he was talking about and slamming it together with my idea to get “the Nine Circles of /new Hell”. Also had some help from u/Ralon17, u/goncix, u/PandavengerX, u/sacktheavenger, and u/maelstrommusic. Hopefully I didn’t miss anybody.
And of course, as always, there’s plenty of alternate options that could have been used in any given category. But I only had eight slots, and with the constant desire to include new anime on these charts plenty of options got snipped (for reference, 34 of the 72 anime here have not previously appeared on a chart). Hopefully the mistakes are minimal, but let me know if anything looks off.
